• This tour visits Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. In order to enter these countries, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
• We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.
• There is no visa required for U.S. and Canadian citizens to enter Israel.
• A group visa for entry into Jordan will be provided for all travelers whose flights have been arranged through Go Ahead Tours, as well as for travelers who book their own flights and provide Go Ahead Tours with their full passport and flight details.
• U.S. and Canadian passport holders must obtain a visa in order to enter Egypt. U.S. citizens can purchase your visa at the airport upon arrival for $25. The entry authorities require exact change in crisp, new bills. You can also purchase your visa in advance by using a visa provider, such as our partner VisaCentral . Additionally, you can opt to purchase an electronic visa on the Egyptian Electronic Visa Portal website (Please note: Canadian citizens may only obtain a visa directly from the Egyptian Embassy or consulate). While it’s customary to tip your Tour Director, you don’t need to tip these additional staff members. 
• You will have a different Tour Director in each country on this tour.
• Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Tel Aviv and depart from Cairo. A representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative might be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the bus at the time of your arrival.
• Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead Tours for an additional cost.
• A flight from Amman to Cairo is included in the price of your tour. The tour extension also includes a roundtrip flight between Luxor to Cairo.

• A small bottle of hand sanitizer may be helpful when other facilities are not readily available while on the road.
• You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
• It is preferable not to visit churches, temples, mosques, or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
• At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov.
• Please be sure to take proper care with sun exposure, as the sun can be especially strong in some of the areas you are visiting.
• Drink bottled water only while in Egypt. Refrain from drinking tap water, including when brushing your teeth.
• Bring a small first aid kit, including antacids, antidiarrhea medication, motion sickness medication, and any prescription medications in your carry-on bag.
• In Egypt, avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they are cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.
• Public restrooms in Egypt can be quite bare. We suggest carrying bathroom tissue and hand sanitizer with you.
• Depending on season and weather patterns, air pollution in Cairo may be problematic for travelers with a history of respiratory problems. Based on your health history, please discuss any precautions with your healthcare provider prior to departure.
• If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
• Certain over-the-counter and prescription medications may be banned in one or all of the countries on this tour. Importing these drugs can carry severe consequences, including imprisonment. Please consult your healthcare provider prior to departure to ensure that any drugs you may want to bring with you are legal in all countries you will visit.
• If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
• Israeli food is invariably fresh and very carefully prepared. A typical breakfast may consist of sourdough bread with sheep’s-milk cheese and olives, as well as jam or honey. You’ll find everything from Kosher meals to dishes with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences, as well as the international choices available in any major city. On the coast, fish is an excellent choice.
• Jordanian cuisine resembles that of the rest of the Middle East. Olives, hummus, sesame seeds, and herbs are typical in many meals. Falafel is the main street food and many meals are served with rice. Hummus and salad are also popular and available at many restaurants. You’ll find plenty of opportunities to sip mint tea or Turkish coffee.
• Egyptian cuisine uses the bountiful harvests of the Nile Valley—corn, eggplant, zucchini, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, chickpeas, and citrus fruits are popular in many dishes. Don’t miss out on Egyptian interpretations of typical Mediterranean staples like baba ghanoush, falafel, and stuffed grape leaves. Tea is the national drink and is offered at breakfast, after lunch, and in most social situations.
• Israel operates on 220 volts and historically uses a Type H plug, with three flat pins. As the Type H plug is being phased out, you will mostly encounter a new socket that fits both a newer, round-pinned version of the Type H plug as well as the European standard Type C plug with two round pins.
• Jordan operates on 220 volts and uses Type C or G plugs with two round pins or three flat pins, respectively.
• Egypt operates on 220 volts and uses Types C or F plugs with two round pins.
• We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
• The strength of the air conditioning in Middle Eastern hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
• Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
• Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
• There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
• Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
• Israel and Jordan are two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is seven hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
• Egypt is one hour ahead of GMT, which is six hours ahead of ET.
• When it’s noon in New York, it’s 7pm in Israel and Jordan, and 6pm in Egypt.
• You will use the Israeli new shekel in Israel, the Jordanian dinar in Jordan, and the Egyptian pound in Egypt.
• Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
• We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
• You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
• Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
• International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
• You may find it useful to have a supply of U.S. currency in small denominations when bargaining for everything from taxi rides to souvenirs.
• At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
• We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director, $1USD per person per day for the bus helper, and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
• If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
• In Egypt, tipping is an important part of the local culture and you will be expected to tip for services including, but not limited to, taking photos in some areas or seeing additional exhibits. Travelers should carry small bills (in USD) for this purpose.
• Tips can only be paid in cash.
• Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
• Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
• Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.

Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).

During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) - perfect for snorkeling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo.

Choose to escape the crowds by traveling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours.

Culture and customs

Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humor to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.

As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.

Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.

Food and drink

With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.

Things to try in Egypt

1. Hamam mahshi

A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.

2. Ta'ameya (falafel)

Crunchy on the outside, and moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles, and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.

Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas, and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.

4. Ful medames

Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic, and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chili paste and eat with bread.

5. Pastries

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets, and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.

Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment

Located in the northeast corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya, and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.

The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterized by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.

History and government

Recent history.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.

From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.

During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defense. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.

In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic, and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighboring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large-scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.

Early history

Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation, and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians, and travelers are all amazed by this civilization which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion, and natural disasters.

Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you.

While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun, and Cleopatra. Huge monuments, imposing pyramids, golden artifacts, and detailed paintings all hold details about pharaonic rule and succession, as well as commonly held beliefs about religion and the afterlife.

Souqs – or open-air bazaars – are both the best place to shop in Egypt and attractions in their own right. The biggest and most famous souq is the 500-year-old Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewelry, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.

Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense, and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Egypt

You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.

2. Glassware

Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.

3. Cartouche

A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customize them by engraving your name.

Festivals and events

Eid al-fitr.

After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family, and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.

Eid al-Adha

Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep, and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.

Sham el-Nessim

Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

Is Egypt a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQI travelers in Egypt. Though homosexuality is not officially outlawed, gay men have been prosecuted using debauchery and public morals laws and given long prison sentences. Be aware that signals are ambiguous in Egypt as men commonly hold hands, link arms and greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. As long as you use common sense, travel in Egypt should not be a problem.

What to wear in Egypt

Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re traveling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-colored clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.

For the best weather, traveling between November and April is considered the best time. During this period, the weather in Egypt, Jordan, and Israel is warm and pleasant, averaging around 22°C (72°F). Although you may encounter some short-duration rain, it won't be a problem for a well-prepared journey.

For the best prices and fewer crowds, traveling in May, September, and October are the optimum times. These months are considered to be the shoulder season, when you can get a good deal without sacrificing too much of your travel experience as daily temperatures peak at around 30°C (86°F).

Can You Visit Egypt after Israel?

People are free to visit Egypt after Israel. If you fly into Israel, Israeli authorities no longer put an Israeli stamp in your passport. Even with a stamp or Israeli visa, you can still visit Egypt.

Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1979. The main features of the peace treaty were mutual recognition between the two countries, and an end to military conflict between the two countries. Soon after the treaty was signed, trade between the two countries began, and by 1980 there were regular international flights between the two countries.

By signing the treaty, Egypt had become the first Arab country to recognize Israel as a sovereign state. As a result, tourism between Egypt and Israel was now possible.

Most other countries in the Arab world did not approve and barred Israeli tourists from visiting. They also barred any travellers who had an Israeli stamp or an Israeli visa in their passports. Even now, if there is any evidence in your passport that you have visited Israel, or that you intend to visit Israel, you will be refused entry to a number of Arab countries.

Understandably, this has deterred a lot of tourists from visiting Israel while touring the Middle East . For example, if there is evidence of travel to Israel in your passport, such as an Israeli entry visa, you will be forbidden from entering Iran. So, since Egypt is an Arab country, can you visit Egypt after Israel?

What you need to know about an israeli passport stamp.

These days, if you fly into Israel, you will not receive any Israeli passport stamp. Instead, you will be issued with a blue slip/card that serves the same purpose as the stamp once did. You will need to keep this with you throughout your stay in Israel. This essentially means that there will be no evidence of your visit to Israel in your passport.

If, on the other hand, you enter Egypt via a land border crossing, your passport will be stamped when you enter Israel and when you leave. However, having an Israeli stamp in your passport will not be a problem if/when you visit Egypt.

If you are from a country whose citizens require an entry visa for Israel, then your visa will be pasted into your passport. Can you visit Egypt after Israel if you have an Israeli visa in your passport? Yes, you can visit Egypt even if you have a used or unused Israeli visa in your passport.

As of the time of writing, there were only 6 countries which bar you from entering if your passport contains evidence of travel to Israel, or planned travel to Israel. Egypt is definitely not one of them. Even Israeli citizens who are travelling on an Israeli passport are welcome to visit Egypt providing they have a valid tourist visa.

Traveling to Egypt after Israel

If you want to visit Egypt after you visit Israel you can do so by road or by air. At the time of this post being written, Air Sinai was the only airline company offering reliable direct flights between Egypt and Israel. Most international flights between Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv and Cairo International Airport in Egypt, including those offered by Egypt Air, involve at least one stop, quite often in Jordan.

A lot of travellers, and especially backpackers, choose to travel from Israel to Egypt by bus rather than fly. If you want to make the journey by bus, your easiest option would be to book a ticket through a travel agent. However, if you are on a really tight budget, you could use public transport to get to Eilat and then literally walk to Egypt via the Taba crossing, and then catch another bus from there. Given the heat, this is not an option we would recommend. You can find very affordable tour packages that help you to avoid all this sort of hassle.

If you travel from Israel to Egypt via the Taba border crossing you can get a free entry that allows you to stay in Egypt for up to 14 days, but you are only allowed to travel to some resort towns on the Sinai Peninsula, such as Sharm El-Sheikh. Apart from these few coastal resorts, the rest of Sinai is deemed a “risk” area.

Most governments advise that all non-essential travel in South Sinai should be avoided, while all travel in North Sinai should be avoided due to the threat of terrorism and because of ongoing Egyptian military operations. If you do decide to use the Taba border crossing, you should make your way directly to Sharm El-Sheikh or one of the other non-risk coastal resorts. Again, if you really must travel by road, we strongly recommend making arrangements through a reputable Egypt tour operator .

A Word about Egypt Entry Visas

Can you visit Egypt after Israel and get a visa-on-arrival when you arrive in Egypt? Yes, but only if you fly from Israel to Egypt, and providing you are from a country whose citizens are able to get a visa-on arrival.

If you don’t qualify for a visa on arrival, your only option would be to enter Egypt by means of the free 14 entry stamp as discussed above.

Additionally, if you cross into Egypt via a land border crossing, including the Taba border crossing, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to get a visa-on-arrival regardless of your nationality. At the time of this post being written, the Egyptian authorities at the Taba crossing were only issuing the 14-day visa exempt stamps that prohibit travel outside of the Sinai region.

Enjoy a Visa-Free Short Stay

Can you visit Egypt after Israel without a visa? Yes, but for a maximum of 48 hours. We would like to share a little secret which not many people are aware of. If you only want to see the pyramids and one or two other tourist sites in or around Cairo, you can actually do so without a visa, providing you plan your flight schedule correctly.

Passengers who with a transit time in Egypt of 6 to 48 hours are allowed to leave the transit area and the airport without the need for a transit visa. If you plan your flights correctly, you could enjoy a full day of sightseeing in and around Cairo without any visa.

Israel withdraws troops from southern Gaza for ‘tactical reasons’

Drawdown after four months of fighting in Khan Younis coincides with new ceasefire talks

Israel has pulled all of its ground troops out of southern Gaza for “tactical reasons”, the country’s army has said, raising questions about the future direction of the war as Hamas and Israeli delegations travel to Egypt for a new round of ceasefire talks.

Two brigades will stay in the northern half of the Gaza Strip and the new corridor that now bifurcates the Palestinian territory at Wadi Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces said on Sunday, in order to “preserve the IDF’s freedom of action and its ability to conduct precise intelligence based-operations”.

It is believed the drawdown is primarily to relieve reservists after nearly four months of intense fighting in the decimated southern city of Khan Younis, rather than any significant shift in strategy.

An army official who spoke to the Israel daily Haaretz said: “There’s no need for us to remain in Khan Younis. The 98th Division dismantled Hamas’s Khan Younis brigades and killed thousands of its members. We did everything we could there.”

Displaced Palestinians from the city may now be able to return to their homes, they said.

Military analysts said on Sunday that an Israeli ground offensive on Gaza’s southernmost town of Rafah, where about 1.5 million people were sheltering, was not off the table.

But the timing of the announcement coincides with the beginning of a round of mediated talks in Cairo, the Egyptian capital, aimed at securing a second truce and hostage release deal, and is being received as a positive sign that the latest negotiations - after much faltering - may finally bear fruit.

Israel confirmed on Sunday it would send a delegation to take part in the new talks, after the Palestinian militant group Hamas had announced the day before it would send negotiators .

Israeli media reported that the country’s delegation included the chiefs of the Mossad and Shin Bet, and is operating with an “expanded mandate”. The CIA director, Bill Burns, is also expected to attend the talks, which will begin on Sunday evening, alongside the Qatari foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

Although 100 Israelis were freed in a week-long ceasefire at the end of November in exchange for 240 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli jails, negotiations since then aimed at a second, longer truce and the release of the remaining hostages in the six-month war have repeatedly failed.

Before the new talks began, Hamas reiterated its demands issued in a 14 March proposal, which include a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a return of the displaced to their homes, and a “serious” exchange deal of Palestinian prisoners for Israeli hostages being held in Gaza, a statement said.

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who is under growing international pressure over his forces’ conduct in Gaza and the desperate humanitarian situation, said on Sunday that Israel would not give into Hamas’s “extreme” demands or agree to any ceasefire until the remaining hostages were released.

Concerns about a wider regional conflict drawing in Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah continued as Gen Rahim Safavi, a senior Iranian military adviser, told Israel that none of its embassies were safe after last week’s strike by Israel on an Iranian diplomatic site in Damascus that killed two elite Iranian generals. Netanyahu said Israel was prepared for any response. “Whoever harms us or plans to harm us, we will harm them,” he said.

Hamas, the militant group that seized control of Gaza in 2007, triggered the bloodiest war in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict with an unprecedented cross-border attack on 7 October, in which they killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted another 250, according to official Israeli tallies. On Sunday, people gathered at the site of the Nova desert music festival in southern Israel to pay tribute to the young revellers who were killed or kidnapped there.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 33,000 people, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory, and driven almost all of the 2.3 million population from their homes.

Famine is “projected and imminent” in the northern half of Gaza, a UN-backed report said last month, and according to Oxfam the number of people facing “catastrophic levels” of hunger has nearly doubled since December.

Israel denies blocking aid, saying shortages are a result of logistics failures by humanitarian organisations or Hamas diverting supplies. But aid agencies say that delivery has been severely hampered by a combination of logistical obstacles, damaged roads, a breakdown of public order and lengthy bureaucratic controls imposed by Israel.

Some aid groups say sending truck convoys north has been too dangerous because of the military’s failure to ensure safe passage. An Israeli drone attack on a team of international aid workers last week, in which seven people were killed, led to some of the fiercest western criticism of how Israel is prosecuting the war to date.

Netanyahu told Joe Biden last Thursday that Israel would reopen a key land crossing into Gaza, allow more aid through another crossing, and open an Israeli port to aid deliveries, after a warning after the aid worker killings that future US support for Israel would depend on it taking concrete action to protect civilians and humanitarians.

The Israeli cabinet’s decision followed warnings from foreign ministry officials that if aid was not increased, Israel would risk sanctions and arms embargos.

Family members of American hostages being held in Gaza met with vice president Kamala Harris at the White House today to discuss the latest efforts to de-escalate the fighting in Gaza and secure the release of the Americans who have been held in Gaza.

"We are six months in, on day 186," Rachel Goldberg, the mother of American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin, said.

"There are 133 cherished souls who are being held there, and it is time. We don't want any more progress, we want results."

Washington has been applying pressure on Israel to improve humanitarian aid to Gaza.

It comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled down on his pledge to go forward with his invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza. 

"We discussed a lot of different things, and one of the things we talked about is that there is a possibility of holding two truths you can believe, as we do, that it is horrible that innocent civilians in Gaza are suffering," Ms Goldberg added. 

"And at the same time, you can also know that it is horrible and against international law for hostages to be held against their will."

In the aftermath of the Israeli military's second operation at al Shifa Hospital, the largest medical facility in Gaza bears the scars of the war.

The raid has left the hospital's infrastructure in a state of severe damage, revealing collapsed walls and charred remains.

Health workers have also exhumed bodies from mass graves around the hospital.

"We are now exhuming the dead who were executed," Hussein Muhaisen, director of ambulances, said.

US senate majority leader Chuck Schumer met Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid at the Capitol today.

The meeting came as Mr Schumer suggested last month that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not operating in his country's best interests and called for Israel to hold new elections.

Mr Lapid recently said that the senate leaders' call for elections was evidence that Mr Netanyahu was pushing Israel to lose support from its biggest supporters in the US.

Mr Netanyahu has escalated his pledge to invade the southern Gaza city of Rafah but the US has said a ground operation into the area would be a mistake and has demanded to see a credible plan to protect civilians.

Israel's "words must turn into action", Lord Cameron has said.

After the UK participated in the largest airdrop of aid into Gaza on a single day today, the foreign secretary said the UK would continue to "push Israel as hard as we can" to get more aid in.

Led by the Jordanian Armed Forces, a total of nine nations and 14 aircraft participated in the operation today, delivering essential food, water and other supplies to civilians.

An in-person meeting of Israeli and US officials on the planned operation in the Gaza city of Rafah will take place "in a couple of weeks", the White House has said this evening.

Earlier today, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled down on his pledge to go forward with an offensive in Rafah.

He said there were "many forces" trying to stop the Rafah offensive - a reference to other nations demanding that Israel does not go ahead - "but it will not help, because this enemy, after what it has done, will not do it again, it will cease to exist". 

It remains unclear why Israel seems to be withdrawing troops from Gaza.

Military analyst Michael Clarke  says while it is not clear why this has been done there may be both tactical and political reasons for this.

He says the reason this has happened now is due to the "build up of political pressure from outside".

Further to reports we brought you earlier on comments by US defence secretary Lloyd Austin at a senate hearing (see post at 4.19pm), we can bring you more on what the US official said.

Asked by a lawmaker what the impact would be from a deadly mass famine in Gaza, Mr Austin said: "It will accelerate violence, and it will have the effect of ensuring that there's a long-term conflict.

"It doesn't have to happen. We should continue to do everything we can, and we are doing this, to encourage the Israelis to provide humanitarian assistance."

Israel has said aid is moving into Gaza more quickly, but the amount is disputed and the United Nations says it remains much less than the bare minimum to meet humanitarian needs.

Mr Austin said it remained to be seen if the increase in aid could be deepened and sustained.

He added that an Israeli failure to separate the Palestinian people from Palestinian Islamist group Hamas "would just create more terrorism." 

Israel should make a deal with Hamas, the brother-in-law of Eli Sharabi has told Sky News.

Steve Brisley told The News Hour with Mark Austin that hope was all his family had and were "clinging onto".

"We emotionally hope and pray Eli is still alive but with every passing day time is running out," he said.

"Time ran out for his brother Yossi and time has run out for many of the hostages."

He said the "simple maths meant Eli's chances were not good".

Asked if Israel should make a deal with Hamas, he added: "Absolutely.

"The Israeli government have said time and time again the hostages are their first priority. 

"It's time for those words to be put into action."

Mr Brisley said "all the hostages were in mortal danger with every passing day" and if the end of the war would bring them home "then that is what must be done".

The war in Gaza has seen Yemen's Houthis attack cargo ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. 

They say they are doing this in support of the Palestinians in Gaza who have been under Israeli bombardment since the Hamas attack on 7 October.
