Deep underneath the typically bustling neighborhood of New York City's Northern Little Italy (or NoLita, for those in the know) lies a secret. Not only does NoLita serve as the original home for the Archdiocese of New York, but beneath the surface, there exists an entire system of catacomb tunnels.

The history of this cathedral can be felt from the moment one walks up to its front steps, as easily as when one strolls through its parish cemetery, where some of the earliest Catholic New Yorkers are still buried. For the macabre-inclined, anything from sarcophagi to crypts and (many) unmarked graves can be found here — and that's all before one descends the steps to its candle-lit catacomb tunnels.

We had the chance to tour the catacombs at the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral by candlelight , and this is what it was like.

For history lovers, there's nothing more thrilling than knowing that the ground you're standing on was once such a significant part of its past. This sense of history is felt all around the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral , and it's one that's worth experiencing in person.

The New York Catacombs by Candlelight tour begins with an introduction of the Basilica itself, which includes a long, winding, and entirely fascinating history that would surprise even a native New Yorker (and it did!).

• What You Should Know: The Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral should not be confused with its Midtown counterpart, known simply as St. Patrick's Cathedral . While the two are related, they are not the same.
• Why?: Catholicism first came to New York during the 17th century while it was still known as New Amsterdam. The Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral — which did not gain Basilica status by the Vatican until much later — has been open for more than 200 years. When the newer, more well-known St. Patrick's Cathedral was built in Midtown, the original cathedral underwent a name change in addition to earning the title of a 'Basilica' in the process.

These are several out of possibly hundreds of facts one will learn on the tour of this historic cathedral, helping to curate an experience that is educational, engaging, and altogether humbling.

After a brief intro to the Basilica and its current standing in New York, tour participants will move outdoors to begin the walking portion of the tour (the entire tour takes place on the church premises, so there's not too much walking involved).

The parish cemetery is the next stop on the tour, and we were lucky enough to be scheduled with Mike, who was a fantastic guide. With a jovial sense of humor and a knowledge base that was unbelievably extensive, there seemed to be no question that could not be answered, and no stone — no pun intended — was unturned during his talks.

He led us to the cemetery, where we learned as a group that it's home to more than 4,000 people buried — most in unmarked graves — around the church.

Many of the people buried at this parish cemetery were early Catholics who came to New York, including notable legal, political, and noble figures who existed during the 19th century .

Finding where those are buried, however, is a bit more complicated — over the years, some gravestones and markers have been worn down and are unreadable. This also adds to the overall unintentional atmosphere of the tour, which adds a layer of mystique and intrigue.

What is most fascinating — or disturbing, for some — are the unmarked graves which are, quite literally, everywhere... including where one might be standing while taking the tour.

In addition to the mix of century's old burial sites, there are newer crypts, as well as several final resting places for the ashes of modern notable families who have afforded their place within the parish cemetery for eternity.

After about 30 minutes of walking through the parish cemetery, participants will move to the front of the cathedral, where the tour takes an even more historic turn.

As it turns out, the original St. Patrick's had quite a history — and it was one that many people wouldn't be aware of unless they were privy to its origins and the cataclysmic events that occurred in New York City around the time Catholic churches began gaining recognition.

This also meant they were under attack and, while we won't give away too many spoilers, we were particularly floored to learn that at one point in time, the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral once had its own musket-guarded walls.

It's hard to picture the upbeat, colorful neighborhood of NoLita as a Protestant vs. Catholic war zone won over by none other than Bishop "Dagger John" John Hughes, but this is only one piece of New York City's unique history that one will learn on this incredible tour.

New York City's Catacombs: The Descent

After stopping by the original stairway that led down into the catacomb tunnels — which is just as creepy as it sounds — participants have roughly 10 minutes or so to spend within the cathedral. For those who have never been inside the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, the first steps inside are a humbling few.

Not many would know that such a breathtaking interior exists behind the tan stone facade that hides the inner chapel.

Beautiful stained-glass windows let through enough light to illuminate the altar and its religious artifacts, known well by anyone who is familiar with the Catholic Church and Pope-led ceremonies. The crowning jewel of the cathedral, however, is the Henry Erben Organ, which was part of a $15 million dollar renovation , found on the upper floor at the back of the cathedral.

From the cathedral, tour participants are led down a set of stairs where the final part of the tour begins.

New York City's Catacombs: The Underground Tunnels

Without giving too much away, the catacombs are as fascinating, mind-blowing, and unique as one might imagine.

It's a whole other world that feels entirely detached from New York City, yet completely appropriate for the families who hold final resting places within the hallowed walls of this cathedral. Their stories, inscribed on sealed catacomb doors, vary from the most elite and famous Catholics of the city to tragedies that reveal how difficult life once was during the early 19th century in New York.

One of the most famous catacombs is that of the late General Thomas Eckert and his family. Inside this catacomb, fully-tiled walls, artistically pieced together by none other than engineer and builder Rafael Guastavino (known for his work in Grand Central as well as Ellis Island), along with original Thomas Edison light fixtures. And yes — Eckert did have electricity installed in his catacomb vault!

The New York catacombs were only opened to the public as recently as 2017, and have only garnered attention since then.

As one of the most impressive in the U.S., it's a rare treat to be able to walk the candlelight-lined halls where so much history has been kept for more than 200 years.

Deep below New York City’s bustling streets, historic catacombs within the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral await your exploration. Dating all the way back to 1879, this iconic Catholic cathedral is over 140 years old and serves as a historical landmark. It was the first cathedral church for the Diocese of New York (created in 1808 by Pope Pius VII), the second ever Catholic church in Manhattan , and third ever Catholic church in all of New York State . Designed by Joseph Francois Mangin (who also designed New York City Hall), this Catholic Church became the largest in the country when it was erected in 1815.

From that point on, many of NYC’s religious figures have passed through their doors, from the first priest in 1820, Rev. Richard Bulger, to Pope Pius IX !

Fast forward to 2023 where now you can join in on history . This enlightening experience will take you through a series of mysterious tunnels and passageways within the church, as well as two ancient outdoor cemeteries and the Basilica’s interior. Given its long-standing history in the city, the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral remains the final resting place of Bishops, famous New Yorkers and other significant figures in Catholic, New York and American history.

Cemeteries of Old St. Patrick's

The cemetery grounds of the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral were initially established on May 23rd 1801 as a cemetery for St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church on the corner of Barclay and Church Streets in lower Manhattan.  Shortly after the Catholic Diocese of New York was formed by Pope Pius VII on April 8, 1808, the decision was made to build the Cathedral for Diocese here. You will get to visit both cemeteries that are normally off-limits to the public and hear stories of prominent Catholics laid to rest here when you take the Catacombs by Candlelight Tour.   Our cemeteries are still active for burial today.

Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral

The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral was not only the very first Catholic Cathedral of the Archdiocese of New York, it was also the Original St. Patrick’s Cathedral. This church is often confused with St. Patrick’s Cathedral across from Rockefeller Center in Midtown. This was also the very first Catholic Church in the United States named in honor of the Apostle of Ireland, St. Patrick. The Church would be elevated to a Basilica Minor status by Pope Benedict the XVII on December 5th 2010, 1 year after it’s 200th Anniversary. The interior of the Basilica is included in the Catacombs by Candlelight Tour.

The Catacombs in New York are located underground, in the former St. Patrick's Basilica . They have served as a burial place for the most prominent New Yorkers and bishops of the city for over 200 years, until the suspension of this practice due to lack of space.

As of 2012, St. Patrick's Basilica resumed the practice of burying the deceased on Cathedral grounds. This activity may be a bit gruesome for people who are easily impressed, but for those who are not, it is almost mandatory to include this visit in the list of things to see and do in New York .

As this is a very special activity and also in high demand, tickets are sold online through companies specializing in New York tour packages or through St. Patrick's Basilica.

It is advisable to buy tickets through tour companies and not directly from the St. Patrick's Basilica Old Cathedral website, because, strangely enough, prices at the Basilica are more expensive .

It is important that you plan this activity in advance and book as soon as you decide the date because tickets sell out quickly , especially if you are looking to visit in high season.

Are tickets to the New York Catacombs included in any New York City sightseeing pass?

Admission to the Catacombs in New York is included in the New York Explorer Pass and also in the New York Pass by Go City .

On both cards, the pass holder is entitled to free admission to the Catacombs in New York , but they are required to reserve the date online in advance.

When you start the booking process, you will be asked for a credit card to which the value of the tickets will be charged and on the day of the visit, when you show the New York Explorer Pass or the New York Pass Go City, the costs charged to your credit card when you made the reservation will be released.

Please note that if you do not show up on the day you booked or if you cancel less than two days before the tour date, you will not receive a refund. If you will be visiting New York for 3 days or more, it is very convenient to buy one of the passes to visit the city, because the main attractions are included for free or with important discounts on the price.

St. Patrick's Basilica (Old Cathedral) is the oldest in New York City and was the seat of the bishopric until the Catholic authorities decided to move it to the new St. Patrick's Cathedral on 5th Avenue, which is still the subject of discussion by some of the faithful who do not agree at all with the move.

The first thing you should know is that you should not go to St. Patrick's Cathedral on 5th Avenue , as that is not the Cathedral where the catacombs are located although the name is the same.

Many tourists get confused, go to the wrong Cathedral and miss the tour, which is very difficult to book. The address for the "New York Catacombs by Candlelight" tour is 266 Mulberry Street (between Houston and Prince Street) . It can be reached by both bus and subway .

If you go by bus, the closest stops are 8 and 9 of the Downtown Route . You can also go by subway, the most convenient stops are Prince Street, Broadway, Lafayette Station, Bleeker Street.

Is it advisable to go to the New York Catacombs with children?

There are hundreds of kid-friendly attractions in New York , but the Catacombs are not the best activity to do with kids , unfortunately.

There are even adults who are not comfortable visiting the Catacombs in New York. Keep in mind that you are visiting an underground cemetery and, although from a historical and cultural point of view it is a very interesting activity, there are people who have a very hard time during the visit.

You should also keep in mind that since 2012 burials are taking place there again , so it is possible that on the day of the visit there will be some funerals or people visiting the graves of their loved ones.

In such cases the schedule of the visit may be altered . In New York, there is so much to do, that if you want to enjoy the trip with your children you will have the possibility to do many other activities more suitable for them.

You can opt for tours in Spanish if they do not speak English and you can also choose original and unusual activities to do in New York that suit the age of your children.

How much time do you need to visit the Catacombs in New York?

The "New York Catacombs by Candlelight" tour lasts approximately one and a half hours . When planning this tour, remember that you are in New York City and public transportation delays may occur.

Do not leave for the Basilica too late, it is preferable that you have to wait a few minutes than miss the tour because you are late.

You can ask at your hotel the estimated time it takes for the bus or subway to get to the Basilica to better organize yourself. Of course, make it clear when you ask that it is St. Patrick's Cathedral located at 266 Mulberry Street (between Houston and Prince Street) that you want to go to and not the one on 5th Avenue, as even New Yorkers often confuse the two.

Opening hours of the Catacombs in New York City

The tour "The Catacombs of New York by Candlelight", can be done at different times as it is a guided tour with an approximate start and end time set. The tour is available daily , with the first group departing at 10:30 am and the last group departing at 4 :15 pm. If you have reserved a time slot, you must be at the meeting point at 266 Mulberry Street (between Houston and Prince Street), 15 minutes before the start time to validate your tickets.

If you are a New York Explorer Pass holder, for example, you will be reimbursed for the money held on your credit card at that time.

Tips for visiting the Catacombs in New York City

• If you are going to visit the Catacombs in New York, you are already a lucky person to have gotten a ticket, don't miss your chance to do this activity by arriving late, leave early to make sure you arrive 15 minutes before the meeting point.
• If you are impressionable don't book this tour , some people don't deal well with themes associated with death and cemeteries, this tour is mostly that. I loved it, as I also loved the Catacombs in Paris and the Church of the Bones in Portugal, but I must admit that not everyone likes this kind of activity.
• If you already visited the Catacombs in Paris and you think that the Catacombs in New York are more of the same, you are wrong, they are totally different experiences. The New York Catacombs by Candlelight tour is a historical tour, with lots of information about the Basilica and the surrounding area.
• The guides are very accessible so if you have questions about any of the points covered on the tour, don't hesitate to ask them, they will be happy to answer .
• If you take the tour in summer, you will find that the temperature during the visit is quite pleasant, cooler inside the Basilica than outside. If you are sensitive to cold temperatures, bring a coat .
• As I said before, this is not the best activity to go with children, but if you decide to go with them and they are very small keep in mind that you can take a stroller in case they get tired. This tour is suitable for people with reduced mobility and wheelchairs.
• Something very important to remember when booking the tour to the "New York Catacombs by Candlelight", is that you will be visiting a Basilica and cemeteries, therefore, respect for these places is necessary, avoid making a lot of noise and maintain a posture of respect , there may be people praying and also visiting the graves of their relatives.

Where to eat near the Catacombs in New York?

St. Patrick's Basilica is very close to the areas of Soho and Little Italy so there are plenty of places to eat nearby . You can take advantage of being close and visit these two emblematic neighborhoods of New York City and delight yourself with the delicacies sold in their restaurants.

If you like Italian food you will be happy in Little Italy , very close to St. Patrick's Basilica, where you can eat pizzas that are the reference dishes of this traditional New York neighborhood.

Idina Menzel is heading out on a North American summer tour, so make sure not to let go of tickets.

The “Let It Go” singer will begin her summer tour on July 19 in Seattle and will wrap up on Aug. 18 in Greensboro, N.C.

While on tour, Menzel will perform in New York City at the Beacon Theatre on Aug. 15 .

The “Take Me or Leave Me Tour” will be in support of her 2023 album “Drama Queen.”

Tour guides flock to a trivia competition that demands encyclopedic knowledge of NYC

The Panorama Challenge is one of the fiercest trivia competitions in New York City. It takes place at the Queens Museum, which houses a scale model of New York that was first created for the 1964 World's Fair. This annual trivia challenge requires encyclopedic knowledge of the city and attracts those who know it best, mostly tour guides. Earlier this month, reporter Emily Malterre attended the 2024 Panorama Challenge.

JONATHAN TURER: How many people in the room have been to Panorama Challenge before?

EMILY MALTERRE, BYLINE: Quizmaster Jonathan Turer welcomes the crowd.

TURER: How many people have one Panorama Challenge before?

MALTERRE: Two hundred New York City nerds are ready for a cutthroat competition. It's the first year back from the pandemic.

MEGAN MAROD: Well, so we're all a part of team GANYC Panic. It stands for the Guides Association of New York City.

MALTERRE: Megan Marod is a proud, licensed tour guide. This eight-member team has never won the Panorama Challenge since it started in 2007.

MAROD: I think everyone's happy. It's a lot of history fanatics and New York City fanatics all, like, at a history and New York City fanatic party.

MALTERRE: The competitors are all standing on walkways above the Panorama exhibit. They look down on 895,000 miniature buildings, plus trees, roads, even a tiny plane on a string that continuously takes off and lands at the airport. It gives you the feeling that you are looming over the city. The model includes all five boroughs - Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Ayinde Stevens is a guide who specializes in the subway and gives tours of Grand Central Terminal. He says he's mostly prepared.

AYINDE STEVENS: I feel really good tonight except for one category - Staten Island. I love New York City to death, but I barely go to Staten Island.

MALTERRE: The competition includes some general New York trivia, but half of the questions are extra niche, like this one, which starts with a clip from the movie "Enchanted."

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: The finale of this musical number takes place in front of a sculpture created by the first woman to receive a public art commission in New York City. Pros, name the sculptor.

MALTERRE: If you didn't immediately have sculptor Emma Stebbins on the tip of your tongue, don't worry, neither did I. And some questions get quite technical.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: Pros, from 1951 to 1953, which agency ran the subways from the offices located above the tracks at Jay Street?

MALTERRE: There are people here who actually knew the answer...

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: Wow.

MALTERRE: ...The New York City Board of Transportation, which existed only until the 1950s. Sixty questions later, the judges tally up scores. David Madore, a tour guide and Broadway musician, was hopeful about GANYC Panic's chances.

You had concerns about Staten Island. How did that go?

DAVID MADORE: Well, we still have concerns about Staten Island regardless, but we seemed to come through on a few of those questions.

MALTERRE: Then it's time for the big reveal from Quizmaster Turer.

TURER: In first place...

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: Oh, God.

TURER: ...With 57 points, GANYC Panic.

MALTERRE: The prize for winning the Panorama Challenge? Their team name carved on a plaque and bragging rights for the rest of the year.

Trump Tower: Take a Tour of the Saddest Building in NYC

The Trump Organization calls Trump Tower “one of the most iconic commercial properties anywhere in the world...” Have they visited the place lately?

For the duration of his criminal trial, Donald J. Trump has moved back into the penthouse of Trump Tower at the corner of 5th Avenue and 56th Street. With the owner and former president back in residence, you might think they’d spruce up the abutting commercial and retail space. You’d be wrong. The Daily Beast dropped in earlier this week for a tour of the “ crown jewel of The Trump Organization.”

FIFTH AVENUE ENTRANCE

Metal barriers take up half the sidewalk and serve two purposes: (1) to hold back crowds; and (2) to force people to cross the avenue if they want a selfie of themselves giving the finger to Trump Tower.

At least four police officers patrol the residential entrance on 56th street, but security to enter the public space is lax. During Trump’s presidency, the building required a thorough bag check by armed officers. Now a small sign near the entrance reads, “All bags are subject to search by security personnel.”

The Trump Organization website brags, “One of the most notable features of Trump Tower is the breath-taking 60-foot waterfall embellishing the eastern wall of the building.”

Today, it’s notable that there’s no water in the waterfall. And a waterfall without water is just a wall. Here’s a shot from the second story looking down:

So much has changed in the past eight years since Trump called the tower “home.” Ivanka’s eponymous fine jewelry store is gone. And remember the Currency Exchange that served as the backdrop to the iconic moment that Melania and Trump stepped on the escalator?

That’s gone, too.

But let’s not pine for what is lost. Let’s see what’s there…

GROUND LEVEL

A quick glance from the escalator reveals a familiar figure sitting in the café area.

A closer examination clarifies that it’s just a Trump cosplayer taking a break.

Currently under construction, the Trump Café will “most likely open the second week of May,” said an elderly security guard. Then he wiggled his hand in a “give or take” gesture, suggesting not even he believes that will happen.

Trying to help, the guard pointed me to Trump Sweets which offers the full café menu.

At the counter stood a woman in a glittery silver ensemble. She seemed out of place in New York, where people tend to dress more like the woman to her left. Perhaps the Silver Lady slipped through a portal that connects Mar-a-Lago and Trump Tower… along with this guy in the purple jacket and sunglasses.

Around the corner from Trump Sweets is the Trump Tower gift shop, whose signage could use some updating. (Note: 2020 was not a great year for Trump.)

Inside the store is a jumble of Trump-related products.

I asked the clerk to name the store’s most popular gift item. He grabbed a deck of $15 Trump Presidential Playing cards. “We sold 7,000 decks,” he said.

Then he fanned a worn deck and recited his worn pitch: “Trump is the king. Melania and Ivanka are the queens. And most importantly, look who is the joker…”

In the more upscale golf shop, there were $5 Trump-embossed gold chocolate bars and a single copy of Don Jr’s book Triggered for sale. There’s no way to know if Don Jr. slipped the book in there himself.

SECOND FLOOR

Starbucks departed in spring 2022 and was recently replaced by “Nerolab Italian Food Zone.” The Rome-based chain’s tagline is “Nerolab, WHY NOT!” But a better tagline would be: “It’s better to be food-zoned than friend-zoned.” It’s right there. Why not!

OUTDOOR TERRACES

Both public terraces appear to be permanently closed to the public. The lack of public outdoor spaces may be in violation of a deal with the city which traded additional square footage for these gardens. In the smaller exterior space, what’s visible through the window looks sparse and untended. Maybe the RNC could pay for a few Trump gardeners along with all those lawyers.

The large glass doors which once opened up to a second, grander terrace are now mirrored over and locked. This is not the first time that shiny has replaced transparency in Trumpworld.

A FINAL NOTE

On Tuesday, Trump posted “It was my great honor to welcome former Japanese Prime Minister Tarō Asō —at Trump Tower this evening!” and attached this photo :

The backdrop of the marble and brass confers class to the image. Meanwhile, that same day, in another part of Trump Tower, even marble and brass couldn’t hide the trash.

The Archdiocese of New York may be forced into bankruptcy if its main insurer is allowed to go without financial responsibility in thousands of child sexual abuse lawsuits, victims’ attorneys said.

On Tuesday, the state Appellate court’s First Department reversed a ruling dismissing Chubb insurance’s assertion that its policies did not cover child sexual abuse claims that church leaders enabled and covered up for decades.

If Chubb and other insurance companies are off the hook, the Archdiocese, which covers 10 New York counties including Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island, will have no option but to file for bankruptcy, said attorney Jason Amala, whose firm filed about 75 sexual abuse cases against the Archdiocese.

Chubb insured the Archdiocese of New York, which serves 2.5 million Catholics, and its affiliated parishes and schools between 1956 and 2003.

If the cases filed under the state’s Child Victims Act proceed to trial, the financial damage to the Archdiocese could be “staggering,” said Boston attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who represents dozens of abuse victims.

“Certainly, not having insurance coverage can tilt the scale in favor of filing bankruptcy,” Garabedian added, noting even if that happened, he believes sexual abuse victims of clergy should be covered by “the enormous wealth of the Archdiocese of New York.”

The Archdiocese of New York “has substantial financial resources to pay just compensation to victims today and Chubb continues to fund the legal defense of the Archdiocese under a reservation of rights,” Chubb said in a statement.

The Archdiocese has been named in more than 3,000 Child Victims Act lawsuits, with Chubb Insurance involved in 1,593 of them.

In 2019 state law opened a legal window for child sex abuse victims to bring decades-old claims, otherwise barred by statute of limitations, to court.

Each case could settle for $1 million or more, believes Amala.

The appellate court’s decision should help move the long-lingering civil cases through the New York court system, Amala said.

“It will show the trial judges that we need to get trial dates because the Archdiocese’s insurance companies plainly have no interest in negotiating to settle cases,” he said. Following verdicts, he said, the insurance companies can “argue why they shouldn’t have to pay.”

The appellate court’s decision affirms Chubb’s position that it shouldn’t have to defend the Archdiocese if the organization “had knowledge of its employees’ conduct or propensities,” the company said in a statement.

“The Archdiocese must now disclose what it knew and when it knew about child abuse perpetrated by priests and employees,” the company contended. “That disclosure is critical to determining whether the [Archdiocese of New York’s] knowledge and cover-up precludes coverage.” 

The Archdiocese called the ruling “disappointing” and “wrongly decided,” claiming, “If allowed to stand, the decision will permit insurance companies to evade the contractual obligations of the policies they issued.”

Trump’s trial is the latest chapter in the rich history of Lower Manhattan’s courts.

A cluster of downtown buildings has served as the borough’s “epicenter of criminal justice in New York since the 1830s,” said a lawyer who has led walking tours of Manhattan courthouses.

For a decade, Robert Pigott, a lawyer, has led walking tours of the courthouses of Manhattan, guiding visitors around landmarks where the city’s rich legal history has played out. Now the trial of Donald J. Trump has added a chapter to the story he gets to tell.

Mr. Pigott’s tours, which he runs in his spare time, revolve around a cluster of downtown buildings that are the borough’s judicial hub. For now, 100 Centre Street — the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse, where the former president’s case is being heard — is the focus.

But just down the street on Foley Square sits Manhattan’s most elegant courthouse building, New York’s Supreme Court, with its sweeping flight of 32 stone steps leading up to a series of imposing Corinthian columns. Other court buildings are dotted around nearby.

“The eyes of the nation and the world are trained on criminal court cases in New York County, whether it’s organized crime, Wall Street cases or federal cases,” Mr. Pigott said.

Mr. Trump’s trial is remarkable because it is the first time that a former American president has been criminally prosecuted. The defendant’s status as this year’s presumptive Republican presidential nominee adds a contemporary political dimension.

For Mr. Pigott, 64, who has written a book about the history of the city’s courthouses, the real significance is what it says about the status of a few blocks of Manhattan as a nexus. He pointed out that Mr. Trump’s civil fraud case and defamation case also both played out this year in courthouses within spitting distance of the criminal trial.

“Now, when I arrive at the expanse of Foley Square midway through the walk, I can point to something truly remarkable — three different courthouses where the same former U.S. president has been on trial,” he said.

Mr. Trump’s trial shows how politics, celebrity and the location of the court itself can reinforce one another to make a big story bigger. New York’s status as a media hub increases the spotlight during high-profile cases and the high-profile cases held over the decades have, in turn, made the city’s courts an attractive setting for fictional courtroom dramas.

In these buildings, a jury convicted Anna Sorokin for grand larceny in 2019 for posing as a German heiress to swindle wealthy New Yorkers — a case that almost by definition blurred fact and fiction. Naturally, the tale has since been turned into a series on Netflix.

The cluster is also where a group of Black and Latino teenagers, then known as the Central Park Five, were wrongly convicted in 1990 of raping a jogger — a case also rendered as a Netflix series — and where Mark David Chapman pleaded guilty in 1981 to murdering the musician John Lennon.

The New York Supreme Court building, a trial-level court, often serves as a symbol of the court complex. It featured prominently in the television show “Law and Order" and the 1957 courtroom film classic “12 Angry Men,” to cite just two examples.

Mr. Pigott, however, is drawn to the history of the legal system before the 20th century and how it evolved through its buildings. The first stop on the tours he runs is a sidewalk nearby with glass blocks embedded in it, through which it is possible to see the excavations of a courthouse built by the Dutch in the colonial era.

The authorities in New York built a judicial infrastructure in this part of Lower Manhattan starting mainly in the 19th century, when the area experienced significant gang violence, he said.

“This one-block radius has been the epicenter of criminal justice in New York since the 1830s,” said Mr. Pigott.

For all the drama associated with the Trump trial, the streets outside the criminal courthouse have generally been calm this week. Reporters and members of the public have lined up for entry to the courthouse. And on Thursday morning, Collect Pond Park across the street, which has been designated for protests, was empty. Its only occupants were some police officers and a few pigeons.
