The weather and climate of Dooars is quite similar to the one experienced in north Bengal, characterized by long winters and heavy monsoon showers. Here’s a guide to show you the best time to visor Dooars.

Summer (March to June) Summer months do witness an increase in the temperatures and they hover around the 21°C and 31°C mark. But it is not as hot and sultry as it is in the plains. Monsoon (July to September) Monsoon sets in, in the month of June and continues till September. In June the rainfall remains moderate but as months go by, particularly during the months of August and September, the showers become torrential. Due to heavy rainfall the sanctuaries too remain closed hence it’s not much fun visiting Dooars during these months except for the lush greenery that surrounds the whole area. Nature lovers may find it the best time to explore the fascinating region.

Winter (October to February) As the temperatures start dipping, Dooars becomes the most favored destination for tourists. As monsoon recedes, it leaves behind an absolutely gorgeously green surrounding that is intoxicating. A tourism festival called ‘Teesta Tea and Tourism fest’ is celebrated with much fervor in winter. Activities like paragliding, jungle safari and river rafting are also very popular among the adventurous tourists. The Dooars or Duars are the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in North-East India around Bhutan. Duar means 'door' and the region forms the gateway to Bhutan from India. There are 18 passages or gateways through which the Bhutanese people can communicate with the people living in the plains. Dooars is synonymous with the term Terai used in Nepal and northern India and form the only nitrate rich plain in India. The Dooars region politically constitutes the plains of Darjeeling Himalayas, the whole of Jalpaiguri district and Alipurduar district. The altitude of Dooars area ranges from 90 to 1,750 m. Innumerable streams and rivers flow through these fertile plains from the mountains of Bhutan. The major river is the Teesta besides many others like the Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa, Sankosh, Dyna, Karatoya, Raidak, and Kaljani rivers, among others. Monsoon generally starts from the middle of May and continues till the end of September. Winters are cold with foggy mornings and nights. Summer is mild and constitutes a very short period of the year. Dooars is the ideal place in Bengal for monsoon travelling. The economy of Dooars is based on three "T"s - Tea, Tourism and Timber. The main industry of the Dooars region is the tea industry. Thousands of people are engaged in the tea estates and factories. The weather in Dooars is pleasant throughout the year. In summer the temperature does not go above 26°C, which is relatively less than the surrounding areas. In winter, it goes down to 2-3°C but does not touch the freezing point in general.

As the place is at the mountain foothills, it experiences longer monsoon though.  For these favourable weather condition, the forest canopy grows very fast and the hills often stay green.

In the table below, we can get a basic idea of the temperature throughout the year

Dooars-weather-and-temperature

From the month of October to February, it is winter in the Dooars. The temperature goes down gradually and when the sun comes out- the weather becomes pleasant.

Chapramari-Wildlife-Sanctuary-Dooars-in-Foggy-Winter-Morning

With the progress of winter, the mercury may drop near the freezing point, but snow is very uncommon in this area. Generally, the temperature hovers around 5 – 20°C. This pleasant weather is the perfect time for local festivals like the Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival between November and December.

The season begins in June with sporadic rains, but July is the true beginning of the monsoon season in here. It lasts till September, sometimes early October.

Samsing-Dooars-in-Monsoon

The average rainfall here varies between 35 – 50 cm. Between July and August, it rains cats and dogs in this region. The rivers run beyond capacity and the barrages often overload. This time of the year is the breeding season of the animals, so most of the sanctuaries remain closed between mid-June and mid-September.

The season begins in March and continues until early June. The temperature ranges from 20 to 35°C. The morning and evening are very pleasant, but the noon and early afternoon hours face scorching heat, especially near the sandy riverbeds.

Tea-Garden-in-Dooars-in-Summer-Morning

The grassland withers, the rise in the heat and humidity level become uncomfortable for the tourists. This season has a relatively better chance of wildlife sighting owing to a less amount of greenery.

Best Time to Visit Dooars

The best time to visit Dooars is in the winter seasons. This time the weather is pleasant and perfect for enjoying the jungle safaris. As monsoon just ends, the rain transforms the forest into a green paradise and the rivers run full to the brim. The weather remains pleasantly cool during the day and cold in the night. Jayanti Dooars - Complete Tour & Travel Guide

Jayanti Dooars- Located on the edge of Buxa Forest is a quaint forest village along with the River Jayanti. Jayanti River forms a natural border with the Bhutan hills, the hills on the Eastern Side of the river are known as the Jayanti Hills, and the small villages on the western side known as Jayanti villages are named after the river Jayanti. 30km from Alipurduar Jayanti is often referred to as the 'Queen of Dooars' because of its astounding view, fascinating lush greenery and tranquil ambiance.

Jayanti can be visited with ease if you opt for North Bengal Guide's affordable Dooars Tour Packages that include all the latest amenities. You can get to see our travel itineraries in the holiday packages section.

History of Jayanti in Dooars

During British rule, Jayanti became one of the major epicenters of the mining and tea industries in India. It became extremely important to British India's finances. However, it became difficult for the British to supply their commodities as the large European tea and mining industry grew around Jayanti. The construction work of the Jayanti Railway started in 1901 after they asked the Maharaja of Cooch Behar, Nripendra Narayan. Once Maharaja nodded yes, the British built a steel-made railway bridge over the Jayanti River to transport dolomites.

After the independence of India, the passenger train service began. This passenger train used to depart Alipurduar Junction at 08:30 pm and arrive at Jayanti at 9:30 pm. The next day the passenger train used to depart Jayanti at 8 am and arrive at Alipurduar junction at 9 am. This historic railway service stopped once the Buxa Tiger Reserve was announced in the year 1986. The bridge above the Jayanti River is now in complete ruins. You will get to see only some pillars of it as the river has become shallow due to excess pebbles and rocks.

Jayanti Dooars Sightseeing & Tourist Spot

Beneath the vibrant ecology is the Dooars oldest town Jayanti village but in the present time you can't see the town instead what you see is a village that is slowly fading away as time passes by. In Jayanti nature has blossomed and is at its apex where the forest is green and the wildlife is abundant. Away from the tedious and monotonous city lifestyle, a trip to Jayanti offers a perfect destination for a laid-back holiday amidst nature it's a place where time seems to have slowed down its fast pace. Although the river Jayanti remains dry most of the year when the water level rises, listening to the alluring sound of the flowing river, chirping of unknown birds, sweet fragrance of nature and refreshingly cool breeze at Jayanti will make you feel completely rejuvenated. The pebbles along the river bed of Jayanti add unmatched beauty to the place.

The journey towards the Jayanti in itself is an amazing experience driving through the dense Buxa Tiger Reserve has allured many travelers to travel to Jayanti. Spotting a herd of elephants, Barking Deer, or plenty of Peacocks are the most common sights on the way to Jayanti. A sacred place called Pokhari is nearby Jayanti apart from its religious belief this spot is a great place to see the large number of big-sized Magur and Turtle in the waters of the Pokhri and the beauty of this place has certainly something which has refreshing effect. For the Hindus as well as Buddhists, this place holds enormous religious significance. Getting to Pokhri requires a walk through the forests. This splendid lake is around 4 km away from Jayanti.

Another interesting place where you can go is Mahakal Cave located near the Bhutan border this cave temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and many visitors visit this cave during Maha Shivratri. Mahakal is a renowned tourist attraction as well as a prominent pilgrimage site. It is a cave dedicated to Lord Shiva that is located near the Bhutan border. The Mahakal cave trip through the forest is known for its bird watching. You can also hike to the neighboring Bala Riverbed, which is an excellent site for bird watching, especially peacocks, but don't linger there until late at night because it's a leopard hotspot. Bhutia Basti, located 1.5 kilometers from Jayanti, is another fantastic place to see elephants.

Accommodation in Jayanti Dooars

When is the 2024 solar eclipse?

The solar eclipse is slated for Monday, April 8, across North America, passing over parts of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

What is a solar eclipse?

According to  National Geographic , a solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, creating a shadow on our planet called an umbra.

There are also different kinds of eclipses. A total eclipse occurs when the moon blocks out the entire sun and a partial eclipse occurs when the moon only blocks part of the sun.

What happens during a total solar eclipse?

According to the  IU official website , a total eclipse takes place when the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth, placing the Earth in its shadow. The time it takes place, as well as the duration, are influenced by factors like the distances between the sun, moon and Earth, the moon’s phase and the axial tilt of the Earth and moon.

Does it get dark during a total solar eclipse?

Yes. The closer one's location is to totality, the greater the darkness and duration. During a total solar eclipse, the moon eventually lines up perfectly between the Earth and the sun, blocking out light.

2024 eclipse path changes

April 8 total solar eclipse viewing times in indiana, 2024 total solar eclipse viewing times in kentucky, how long will the eclipse last 2024.

The partial phase of the eclipse lasts close to a few hours, with totality reaching over four minutes in some places.

Eclipse safety 2024

As reported by  NASA , there are plenty of ways to stay safe while watching the eclipse. These include:

  • Use eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer to view the sun during partial eclipse phases before and after totality.
  • During the totality period, when no part of the sun is visible through the eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer, individuals can view the eclipse directly without proper eye protection.
  • Once the sun reappears, place eclipse glasses back on or use the handheld solar viewer to continue watching.
  • Avoid using glasses or handheld viewers with binoculars, telescopes or cameras unless they have the proper solar filters.
  • If planning to watch an entire eclipse, wear sunscreen, a hat and protective clothing to avoid skin damage.

I lived in Bali for 2 months. These 7 popular tourist spots were not worth the hype.

  • I spent two months living in Bali — it has so much to offer, and I really loved my time there.
  • But many things didn't live up to the hype for me, including the beaches I visited.
  • Tegallalang Rice Terraces and Campuhan Ridge Walk didn't look like what I expected.

Insider Today

In August, I left my corporate job to embark on a year of solo travel across Southeast Asia. I spent two months living in one of my bucket-list destinations — the tropical island of Bali.

Bali is a dream travel destination for many, and there's so much I loved about it — breathtaking scenery, warm and welcoming people, dozens of stunning waterfalls, and ancient Hindu temples to explore.

But there were also a few surprising things that didn't quite live up to my expectations.

And, with the Indonesian spot recently implementing a tax requiring tourists to pay to enter Bali , it's as important as ever to make sure you're getting your money's worth on future trips.

Here are seven things I experienced during my stay that I didn't quite think were worth the hype:

The 'iconic' Gates of Heaven felt like a tourist trap

Like any tourist attraction in Bali, I expected the Gates of Heaven to be crowded, so I showed up just after sunrise. Apparently, I was already too late, since there was a huge line of people already waiting to see them.

But the long line wasn't the main disappointment for me. Those photos you've likely seen of people posing between the gates with a perfect reflection beneath them … well, that's just a camera trick !

There's no reflecting pool, just a local holding a mirror below your phone camera to create the effect.

If you want a nice picture for Instagram, it's worth checking out. But I left shortly after arriving and probably could have saved myself a couple of hours had I done my research.

The beaches were mostly a letdown

The beaches in Bali aren't necessarily bad, and some are really nice. There's great surfing all around the island, and some areas, like Amed, have incredible snorkeling and diving right from the shore.

But for the most part, I found the beaches to be a little disappointing. Many I visited were filled with trash , which is in part due to a problem with waste management in the area.

Plus, the currents were too strong at many of the beaches, so I wasn't able to swim safely at some beautiful spots, like Kelingking Beach on nearby Nusa Penida.

Fortunately, many volunteer groups are working on cleaning Bali's beaches — and the tax requiring tourists to pay to enter the island may, in part, be used to improve the island's infrastructure and conservation efforts. Even so, there's much more work to be done.

Walking the streets of central Ubud was anything but peaceful for me

I loved Ubud , the spiritual and cultural center of Bali. But walking anywhere in Ubud felt far more chaotic than the romantic drama "Eat, Pray, Love" depicts.

I'm used to being solicited when I travel, and I understand that many locals rely on tourism dollars to make a living, but I have never experienced the level of constant solicitation that I did in Ubud.

As I walked down the streets, I found myself getting asked if I needed a taxi, massage, dance tickets, or something else every few seconds.

The Tegallalang Rice Terraces weren't what I expected

For me, the famous Tegallalang Rice Terraces just outside Ubud turned out to be another case of "Instagram vs. Reality."

Having seen many beautiful rice terraces in other parts of Bali, and in other countries, these were a letdown for me.

They're smaller than I expected, and full of shops, cafés, abandoned swings, and props for photos. I can see why the terraces are a popular photo opportunity, but it felt more like a staged park than the place of natural beauty I expected.

Traffic and construction killed my vibe in Canggu

The coastal village Canggu is known for its surfing and cool vibes, and I could see its potential.

But with so many shops, hotels , and resorts being developed, Canggu looked and felt nothing like the beachy village I expected it to be. It felt a bit overbuilt and I passed so much construction .

The traffic getting in and out of Canggu was also a nightmare. Even with a motorbike, the roads become gridlocked at times, leaving me baking in the sun.

I thought the Campuhan Ridge Walk was boring, and the views weren't that special

Drone footage and overhead photos of the Campuhan Ridge Walk near Central Ubud are wildly beautiful and lush, with green trees everywhere.

But I wish I hadn't fallen for the dreamy aerial shots. The Campuhan Ridge Walk is much different on the ground.

I walked the whole length, dodging tourists and pesky flies in the heat, waiting for some spectacular view. But there really weren't any views of anything besides some treetops off to each side.

I think this Walk is best enjoyed from above.

Gili Air wasn't the idyllic paradise I expected

Indonesia's Gili Islands are not technically part of Bali, but ferry trips to it are popular among Bali visitors, so it feels worth mentioning.

I spent a week on Gili Air, known for its white-sand beaches with clear turquoise water. Although the island had a lot to offer, I didn't find it to be the tropical paradise I imagined.

On one side of the island, there's a very narrow strip of sand that seemed to be mostly privatized. The beaches on the other side of the island appeared to be full of hard and sharp dead coral that had washed ashore — far from the white-sand paradise I pictured.

When I got in the beautiful-looking water, I saw fish and sea turtles swimming among trash and was frequently stung by jellyfish larvae.

That said, there are local groups working on conservation efforts to preserve the area's famous reefs and local marine life. Visitors are also welcome to participate in clean-up efforts , which could be a thoughtful way to incorporate more responsible tourism into a future trip to Bali.

Aussies warned to be across new tourist ban in Kyoto, Japan

Aussies heading to Japan are warned to be aware of a new tourist ban in one of Kyoto’s most popular sightseeing spots.

There are major changes being made to sightseeing at one of Japan’s most popular tourism spots.

Tourists are being banned from entering certain alleys in Gion, the famous geisha district in Kyoto, with Aussie travellers warned to take note.

Local residents had become fed-up with hordes of tourists , saying their neighbourhood “is not a theme park,” pleading with the city to take action.

Reported incidents of unruly tourists include a maiko’s kimono being torn and another having cigarette butt put in her collar. A maiko is an apprentice geisha.

“We don’t want to do this, but we’re desperate,” said Isokazu Ota, an executive member of a Gion residents’ council, comparing tourists who crowd around geisha emerging from the narrow alleys to “paparazzi”.

Tourists will be told not to enter narrow private streets in Gion, where geisha work in teahouses, from this month.

Brett Mitchell, ANZ managing director of Melbourne-based company Intrepid Travel, told news.com.au: “Under the new rules, the small alleyways in the historic district will be completely cut off for tourists, and several restaurants and teahouses will only serve the geisha, their clients, and local residents.”

Geisha, which are known locally as geiko, perform traditional Japanese dance, music and games. They are recognised by their formal kimonos, white face make-up and hair styled in an elaborate bun.

Mr Mitchell said the change was likely to affect thousands of Aussie tourists who visit the popular city of Kyoto. Intrepid runs 15 tours across Japan, with all bar one including Kyoto.

“We recommend that Aussie travellers planning trips to Japan, or who have one already booked, particularly to Kyoto, anticipate several changes and make sure they are across all rules before heading there and be flexible with itineraries,” he said.

Aussies – who will still have access to the district’s main street, Hanamikoji Street – are warned to be aware of the streets they are and are not allowed access to and respect the personal space of geisha, “especially when it comes to selfie requests”.

Back in 2019 signs were put up banning photography in the private alleys, warning of fines of up to 10,000 yen ($100).

InsideJapan co-founder Alastair Donnelly, whose company offers small group tours and bespoke self-guided cultural adventures, told news.com.au the move follows not only reports of bad behaviour, but the negative impact of the post-pandemic tourism boom.

Japan’s popularity among Australian travellers has soared, surpassing the wildly popular Indonesian island of Bali in some travel industry rankings.

Mr Donnelly said at this stage it was unclear how the ban would be policed but encourages travellers to be aware and take note of local cultural etiquette.

“We encourage visitors to pay attention to signs indicating restrictions on private property or taking photos, and respect those,” he said. “Kyoto even has its own ‘code of behaviour‘ for tourists to bear in mind.

“Beyond this, learning some simple greetings and basic Japanese phrases also goes a long way towards demonstrating a desire to participate in the culture and not just observe.”

Mr Donnelly said there were many districts worth visiting in Kyoto that do not attract the same huge crowds at a singular time as those that congregate in Gion.

“Visitors may consider whether it is worth spending the extra for a private tea ceremony experience or evening drinks with a maiko (apprentice geisha) in attendance, rather than joining the throngs at dusk who pack the streets of Gion,” he said.

“A less expensive option in spring and autumn is to plan your visit to coincide with the geisha dances. This is a spectacular performance with scores of maiko taking part.

“It is a longstanding part of the Kyoto calendar and to join is to participate in a little slice of Kyoto geisha life.”
