Thrilling Riverboarding and Rafting on the Ciwidey near Bandung

The Ciwidey river, south of the city of Bandung, in West Java, has become a favorite destination for Indonesia’s riverboarders, members of the Indonesian Riverboarding Association.

Ciwidey is an area in the Bandung Regency (the district surrounding the City of Bandun g), which is known for its cool climate, strawberry orchards, and panoramic countryside cut by the Ciwidey river. Ciwidey is best known for its crater named the “Kawah Putih” or White Crater” with its white sand spread out like snow and clear aqua colored lake. The crater lake sits on Mt. Patuha at an elevation of 2,386 meters above sea level.

To go riverboarding, you must be properly equipped. Your gear should include a board, that looks almost like a wide surf board, but on which you lie down on your stomach, face down to watch the flow of the river which you are following. The board also serves to protect you against oncoming objects. Since this is a pretty extreme sport, boarders must wear a wet suit like divers, for protection and to keep warm in the water, you must also wear a life jacket and protective floaters on elbows and knees, a helmet to protect your head, and fins to help you swim. To follow this sport, you must already know how to swim.

The 20 km long Ciwidey river has a pretty strong current, with many large boulders in the middle of the river, and wide waterfalls of about 1 meter or height slightly more. Only those having advanced grade should venture these waterfalls. In the rainy season the river often overflows its borders. Therefore, it is advised to go rafting or river boarding on Ciwidey during the dry season only.

Boarders usually go in groups. The leader opens the route for the other members to avoid new boulders. When the group is not yet familiar with a section of the river, the leader will walk along the riverbank first to observe the river’s peculiarities. Safety and Carefulness are of the utmost importance.

Get There To get to the Ciwidey river go to the Pasir Jambu village. This is accessible by road from Bandung . You can drive your own car here, or travel by public bus.

Ciwidey is a village and district about 30 km south of the city of Bandung , in the Parahyangan mountain region of Western Java , Indonesia.

Ciwidey is known for the Kawah Putih crater lake, although officially the crater lake is in the neighbouring district of Pasirjambu. Both districts are part of Bandung regency. In addition, Ciwidey and the surrounding regions are also known for their tea plantations as well as strawberry farms.

The main road from the city of Bandung to Ciwidey starts at the Soroja (Soreang Pasirkoja) toll road exit in Soreang. From Soreang, the distance to Ciwidey is only about 15 km. The Kawah Putih crater lake is further south, about 15 km from Ciwidey. Via the toll road, the drive from Bandung to Kawah Putih takes about one and a half hours.

There are regular buses and minibuses from Leuwi Panjang bus terminal in South Bandung to -7.09884 107.46998 1 Ciwidey bus terminal in the centre of the village (via Soreang).

Get around [ edit ]

To get from Ciwidey bus terminal to the Kawah Putih crater lake, take the yellow angkot (public minivan), which runs to Situ Patengang lake via the entrance of Kawah Putih (along the main road). It is also possible to charter an angkot which can bring you not only to the entrance, but also to the crater lake itself.

Kawah Putih, also known as White Crater in English, is a beautiful volcanic lake located on the slope of Mount Patuha. The scenic beauty of the crater is mesmerizing, as the lake boasts a blend of white and greenish hues, a white sandy beach, and towering limestone cliffs.

As you continue your journey, you will eventually reach the stunning lake of Situ Patenggang (also known as Situ Patengan). This lake is a popular family vacation spot in Sunda due to its breathtaking scenery. You can enjoy the view from the lakebank or rent a boat to circle around the lake.

Kampung Cai Ranca Upas

Ranca Upas is a forest that used to have a large swamp, hence its name. Ranca is a Sundanese word that means swamp, and Upas is a species of flora commonly found in the area. The place is now used for breeding Javan Rusa, also known as Sunda Sambar or Rusa Timorensis, a species of deer native to Java, Bali, and Timor.

According to the brochure, the breeding area at Ranca Upas covers an area of five hectares. However, during our visit there, we only saw twenty deer inside the pen. It is unclear whether the five hectares are only dedicated to the breeding area or if they also include camping grounds and playgrounds. It is also possible that the twenty deer we saw were only part of a feeding activity, and the rest were free to roam in the woods.

The habitat of the deer is muddy ground with a wooden platform surrounded by a wooden fence. You don't need to buy tickets to enter because it is accessible by buying carrots to feed the deer. If you want to get as close as possible to the deer, you walk on the ground, but since their habitat is so muddy, we prefer to feed them from the wooden platform. The deer are accustomed to visitors feeding them carrots, so they are generally tame and will come to whoever brings carrots.

Besides the deer breeding area, Ranca Upas has camping grounds and a water park. You don't have to bring camping gear because it can be rented on-site. Despite the cold weather in Ciwidey, the brochure assures that the water used for the water park is warm, as it comes from the nearby hot spring. So, you can enjoy playing in the water to your heart's content without worrying about getting cold.

Strawberry Picking in Ciwidey

The cool weather on the slopes of Mount Patuha is ideal for growing strawberries, so there are many strawberry farms in the area. At these farms, you have the opportunity to pick your own strawberries. Although the price may be higher than buying them in a market, the experience of picking your own strawberries is always enjoyable, especially for children. Since strawberry picking is a favorite activity in Ciwidey, the farms often get crowded on weekends and holidays. Hence, it is best to arrive early.

Traditional Snacks From Ciwidey

On your way to Kawah Putih, Ranca Upas, Situ Patenggang, and other tourist destinations in Ciwidey, you will come across rows of kiosks on either side of the road. They sell traditional snacks from Ciwidey. The famous three are Kalua Jeruk, Dodol Strawberry, and Berondong Jagung.

Kalua Jeruk is a sweet treat made from pomelo skin and sugar. Besides the original flavor of palm sugar, it also comes in many different colors and flavors, such as strawberry, durian, orange, and melon.

Since there are many strawberry farms in this area, some strawberries are cooked into strawberry sweets called Dodol Strawberries. They are made of glutinous rice, sugar, and strawberry juice.

Berondong Jagung, or popcorn balls in English, looks like white and brown balls hanging on the snack kiosks. They are made by sticking popcorn together with palm sugar.

Meal and Accommodation in Ciwidey

Many years ago, Sindang Reret was the only recommended restaurant and hotel in Ciwidey. But today, there are so many options you can choose: spend a night in villas, hotels and motels, guest houses, and inns. The latest trend is to stay in the glamping camp.

As a resort, D'Riam Riverside features comfortable hotel rooms, glamping, restaurants, and outdoor activities such as rafting, outbound, the bamboo bridge, and various swings.

On the other hand, Bobocabin Ranca Upas offers modern, minimalist, tiny cottages under the canopy of a forest.

Although Sindang Reret Hotel looks outdated compared with the newer hotels, resorts, and glamping, the Sundanese food here is still the best. One of their specialty is Gepuk, sliced beef that is spiced and then cooked for hours until tender. The taste is rather sweet.

If you like spicy food, try the Sundanese salad named Karedok. It consists of raw vegetables such as cucumber, string beans, eggplant, and cabbage with oncom sauce. Oncom is made of beans fermented with fungi, which you can only find in Sunda. If you prefer cooked vegetables, you can order gado-gado, which comprises cooked cabbage, string bean, bean sprouts, boiled egg and potato, fried tofu, and tempe with peanut sauce.

Most of the restaurants in Ciwidey are Sundanese restaurants. Although their menus are slightly different from each other, in general, they serve fried or grilled chicken, gourami fish, Karedok, fried tofu, and fried tempeh. Continue reading about the famous Sundanese food here...

How to Go to Ciwidey, Kawah Putih, and Situ Patenggang

This highland is approximately 50 km southwest of Bandung. Thanks to the opening of the Soroja (Soreang - Pasirkoja) toll road, traveling to Ciwidey becomes much faster. The Soroja toll road is an extension of the Purbaleunyi toll road, where you must switch lanes at the km. 132. It is a bit confusing for first-time drivers as there is a fork at the exit, where you must choose a direction to Soreang. Once you get onto the toll road, simply continue driving until the end, where you will reach Soreang. From there, just follow the road signs to Ciwidey and continue your journey to Kawah Putih and Situ Patenggang.

Don’t forget to bring your jacket, since the cold wind in the area of  Ciwidey, Kawah Putih and Situ Patenggang makes it quite freezing up there.

Kawah Putih is a unique crater lake in Ciwidey, a small village near Bandung, Indonesia. It’s a stunning volcanic lake that was created by an eruption on Mount Patuha in the 11th century.

The name in Bahasa means ‘White Crater’ but I’d say the color is closer to turquoise, and supposedly it can even change to green, blue, or brown depending on the sulfur content.

In any case, this crater lake is one of the most unique and amazing things you can see in West Java, and it’s easy to visit on a day trip from the Bandung area.

There are lots of international and domestic flights to the Bandung airport (BDO) since it’s one of Indonesia’s biggest cities. You can even fly there from Bali . You can shop for flights to Bandung at Skyscanner.

From Bandung to Kawah Putih, it’s normally a 2 hour drive because of traffic and mountain roads. You can drive yourself, or it’s easy to book a tour or hire a private driver to take you there (more info on that later).  

Car vs Shuttle vs Hike

When you arrive at Kawah Putih, there’s a shuttle bus to take you the last 5 km of the journey.

The price for the shuttle bus is 27k Rupiah per person roundtrip, and they normally have buses running every few minutes. It’s on a broken road, but still gets you there pretty quick.

If you’d rather take your car all the way to the final parking area, you can still do that but you have to pay an extra 150k Rupiah (~$10 USD) per vehicle. Kind of pricey.

You can also hike, but it’s 5 km of steep walking on a road and you won’t see anything along the way except dull pine trees.

Kawah Putih Bandung – What To Expect

Kawah Putih is a mysterious looking sulfur lake, and it’s easy to see why the locals have always thought it was haunted.

The dirty yellow sand, twisted dead trees, and smoky lake surface all add up to make the place feel completely bizarre and surreal.

This crater was mined for sulfur by the Dutch and later the Japanese (during World War II), and you can still see some of the leftover tunnels around the lake.

It’s actually a very quiet and peaceful lake, and if it wasn’t for the nasty sulfur smell and toxic fumes, we would’ve loved to stay longer.

There are bamboo ‘skywalk’ viewpoints on each side of the crater where you can get elevated views of the lake, but you have to pay an extra 10k Rupiah to enter these.

The extra viewpoints are not really special (in my opinion) and the crater rim may be covered in clouds unless you shoot at sunrise, which requires a very early start.

Generally the best views of the lake are up close.  

Is It Safe?

Kawah Putih is stable and safe. Even though it’s a volcanic lake, there hasn’t been any significant activity since the 17th century.

They do recommend only staying at the lake for 15-30 minutes because of sulfur fumes, and that’s probably a good rule to follow.

Kawah Putih is not recommended for people with breathing or heart problems, pregnant women, or infants. If you aren’t in one of those categories, don’t sweat it.

What To Wear

The climate at the lake is a bit chilly since it’s 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level. It’s quite a bit higher than Bandung.

Temperatures can be around 10 Celsius (50 Fahrenheit), so it’s a good idea to bring a jacket and pants, especially if you come for sunrise.

This is the current Kawah Putih entrance fee as of 2021, but the ticket price may change over time since it’s a popular place to visit from Bandung.

1. Walk into the live crater of Tangkuban Perahu

Why is it one of the best things to do in bandung, indonesia.

More or less 2 hours drive from the city of Bandung going North lies an active volcano, Tangkuban Perahu. It’s a remarkable experience stepping in an active volcano, actual witness to the strong white steaming smoke that it produces. An “overturned boat” from the local’s mouth, the mountain is covered with a story of mystery and legend about a strong young man who fell in love with his own mother. Revelation of this odd and horrifying affair, the mother decided to challenge the man to build a gigantic boat in one single night. Fear of accomplishing the task, she decided to seek help from the God to bring out the sun long before the task has been completed which turns the man to madness as he kicked the boat on defeat and thus the start of the overturned boat legend.

2. Visit Dusun Bambu

A relaxing family leisure park at the foot of the mountain with very inspiring, sublime and truly remarkable picturesque surroundings. Gigantic bamboo structure welcomes you at the main gate and a fancy-dancy floral shuttle will bring you to the main area of the park. 5. Visit Kawah Putih

Kawah Putih or “White Crater”, a great wonder nestled 50 km South and one of the best places to visit in Bandung. Quite nippy temperature in the area, surrounded by dreamy surroundings, glaring whiteness over the landscape. A crater lake showing off its beauty both to local or foreign visitors and most definitely a glorious spot for photography, from the turquoise lake up to the dramatic skeletal trees around.

The crater lake was also said to be somewhat mysterious that according to villagers, animals, specially birds, tried to avoid the area since it caused death to some living creatures. But science has an explanation to this old story since the crater lake contains a strong concentration of sulfur which is life-threatening to these animals.

But nothing to worry on the said sulfur concentration since today, it’s safe to roam around the crater lake. It’s just the sulfur smell that might bother you so prepare yourself and bring/buy a mask.

6 . Lunch at Sindang Reret Ciwidey

Experience the refreshing mountain breeze as savory Sundanese cuisines are being served on your plate, such a perfect way to spend lunch, only in Sindang Reret Ciwidey. This is definitely one of the best things to do in Bandung after an exhausting walk around the crater lake. Restaurant provides visitors the serene ambiance feel and rural scenery. Sindang Reret Ciwidey, definitely one of the best restaurant in the Southern part of Bandung.

7. Witness the Saung Angklung Udjo Show

Last on our list but definitely not the least, Saung Angklung Udjo Show is the happiest place in Bandung! Even with eyes closed, just hearing the tickling blithe melodies of the Angklung will definitely put a smile on your face. Angklung is a traditional musical instrument made of bamboo.

Awe-inspiring Angklung performances from the kids, left with my mouth hanging opened on how great, serious and passionate they were about their craft. Lucky us, we were able to learn on how to play the Angklung as one of the sons of the founder taught us on how to properly shake the instrument (body shaking is a no no). And as the program ends, you get to dance with all the kids and party to the tune of the happy melodies. With no doubt, a day spent in Saung Angklung Udjo is definitely one of the best things to do in Bandung!

There are several ways to go from Jakarta to Bandung. But us local, prefer choosing train than any other mode of transportation.

Normally it takes only 2,5 hours of car trip from Jakarta to Bandung. But the traffic jam are quite heavy, even in weekdays, so i dont recommend you to take bus/shuttle service.

Oh and also, we have new airport train that can take you directly to the train station in Jakarta, and also there’s also several online taxi services you can take from the airport to train station. Hope this help!

We having plan next month to get married to Indonesian guy we are both Muslim and may parents they will come from Philippines to attend. As u mentioned and required to visit Indonesia need returned ticket that’s ok secured but booking hotel no need coz we will stay in my fiance house what I would inform to my parents might in immigration asking them where is ur hotel booking. In immigration in Philippines very strict and when they ask you is just like Ur criminal. What would I prepared for them to present to the immigration about the address of my fiancé? JAKARTA: The Indonesian government has denied any knowledge of a proposal by a Bruneian infrastructure company to build a high-speed railway (HSR) network connecting the three countries on Borneo Island – Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia – dubbed the Trans Borneo Railway.

Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia told reporters on Monday that he was aware of no such proposal and denied the project existed.

Meanwhile, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi told reporters on Tuesday that he had no idea about the proposal, which would reportedly pass through the territories of the three countries on Borneo, namely Brunei itself, Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia and Indonesian Kalimantan.

Separately, the Transportation Ministry’s railway director-general, Risal Wasal, said on Tuesday that the government had not engaged in any discussion with its Malaysian or Bruneian counterparts regarding a cross-border rail link project.

“This was merely somebody’s proposal to build a railway,” Risal clarified, emphasising he had not received any formal pitch about the project.

The project was announced by Brunei-based company Brunergy Utama on its website, which made headlines at the end of March.

The proposed rail link would span about 1,620 km, connecting places in Borneo known for their natural resources, including oil, coal and palm plantations.

It would be built in two phases, with the first one covering mostly cities in Malaysia’s Sarawak and Sabah states and including Pontianak, the provincial capital of West Kalimantan in Indonesia.

This line would run through the northern and western parts of Borneo. The second phase would cover a southern route that would run through mostly Indonesian cities in Kalimantan, including Samarinda and Balikpapan, the provincial capitals of North and East Kalimantan, respectively.

Both phases would connect in Brunei’s Tutong district.

Indonesia was the first Asean country to run a HSR link with its 350 km/hour China-backed Jakarta to Bandung Whoosh service, which opened last year.

Indonesian experts have poured cold water on the proposed Trans Borneo Railway project, questioning its financial feasibility and overall benefits to the region.

Malaysia has been constructing the 2,000 km Pan Borneo Highway project for decades, while Indonesia built the Samarinda-Balikpapan toll road in 2019 and plans to build another connecting Pontianak to Kijing Port.

University of Indonesia transportation analyst Soetanto Soehodho suggested it would be better for the region to build a freight train service to cater to the much more viable demand from extractive and plantation industries, compared with the proposed HSR, which would carry passengers.

“There just isn’t enough of a population in either Brunei or Kalimantan to justify a high-speed rail,” he said.

HSR is best suited for markets with significant populations, according to the World Bank in 2019, which stated that such a service would need to carry at least four million passengers per year to be deemed viable.

Meanwhile, an Australian government study showed a viable HSR project should be able to cater to between six million and 12 million passengers a year.

To do so, it would need to connect cities with populations of well over one million.

Soetanto, who also serves as a member of the International High-Speed Rail Association, raised doubts about the Brunei firm’s qualifications to spearhead such a massive undertaking, which would cost an estimated US$70bil.

“I find it highly doubtful any investor would be willing to shell out that kind of money without a clear path to financial returns,” he said.

He suggested that it would require more than 50 years for the investment to yield returns, especially given the low population across the three countries on Borneo Island.

The project could boost tourism in Brunei, he pointed out, as well as facilitate the transportation of workers to plantations in Kalimantan or Malaysia or to construction projects in Brunei.

With Indonesia’s recent experience completing the Jakarta-Bandung HSR link, it could play a leading role in the project given the country has 73% of the landmass of Borneo, he said.

Soetanto added that it was likely the project would involve China, with many speculating that it could potentially be part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), given the need for a strong and experienced backer.

Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke said on Monday that the Trans Borneo HSR project was still a proposal and had not been offered to any companies, but the tender to conduct feasibility studies for the project would be opened in May, The Malay Mail reported. — The Jakarta Post/ANN

TRIBUNJABAR.ID, BANDUNG - Lampu penerangan jalan umum di jalur selatan wilayah Kabupaten Bandung yang kerap dilalui pemudik, masih ada yang dalam perbaikan.

Jalur ini mulai dari Cileunyi hingga Nagreg .

Selain itu di jalur tersebut juga terdapat titik rawan longsor , khususnya di daerah Nagreg yang memiliki kontur jalan naik turun. Di beberapa titik jalannya berada di sisi tebing atau jurang.

Menurut Kapolresta Bandung, Kombes Pol Kusworo Wibowo, seminggu lalu sudah melaksanakan pengecekan rute dan jalan raya, jalan alternatif, ini bisa dilalui dalam kondisi jalan yang laik jalan.

"Memang beberapa lampu PJU pada seminggu lalu ada beberapa yang perlu perbaikan. Insya Allah hari ini sudah siap dilalui untuk penerangan 100 persen siap pakai," kata Kusworo, setelah apel gelar pasukan operasi ketupat, di Doom Balerame, Soreang, Kabupaten Bandung , Rabu (3/4/2024).

Kusworo mengungkapkan, semua jalur diprioritaskan, pihaknya menempatkan personel agar memudahkan untuk menambah kecepatan kedatangan personel di lapangan apabila dibutuhkan masyarakat.

"Di jalur Cileunyi Nagreg ada beberapa pos yang dilewati dan utamanya adalah Pos Pelayanan di Cikaledong Nagreg , untuk melakukan CB CB (cara bertindak) seandainya di Limbangan itu padat. Maka akan dialihkan arusnya ke leles Garut, begitu pula seandainya Leles padat, maka akan dialihkan ke Limbangan Garut," kata Kusworo.

Untuk CB CB yang mengarah ke Ciwidey, kata Kusworo, akan dilakukan one way sepenggal.

"Berdasarkan situasional apabila dari Soreang ke Ciwideynya padat, maka yang akan turun ke Soreang sementara di tutup dulu, untuk melancarkan arus dari Soreang menuju Ciwidey dan sebaliknya," kata Kusworo.

Kusworo menjelaskan, begitu juga dengan titik rawan banjir dan longsor, sudah dikomunikasikan dengan BPBD.

"Beberapa titik di Pos Pam kita bersama-sama menyiapkan kendaraan-kendaraan off road, kemudian mesin senso, derek, dan sebagainya. insya Allah itu sudah disiapkan untuk mengantisipasi hal tersebut," katanya.
