What they say about us

tours de tango buenos aires

My group and I had an amazing and special experience in Buenos Aires. Communication was excellent in the organisation at short notice, their depth of knowledge of Tango, its history, the cultural relevance that it has today with its subtleties and the passing on of that knowledge and willingness and patience to answer our questions was really appreciated while keeping things really fun. Our lesson was given at the perfect tempo for our novice ability and the time at the Milonga awesome. Muchas gracias

What People Say's About Us

Carlos called me 5 mins before class which was very re assuring . Sergio and Marcelo turned up and away we went. Lucy and i would love to write about our experience. The whole 2 weeks were a dream because i dont remember getting any sleep.

Upon reflection I am very grateful that I made the decision to make this journey. On several occasions, I decided not to go, even after making numerous non refundable payments, because I did not trust all of the information I received via the internet.

I had a great time with Argentine Tango. The instruction was fantastic. I also found everyone I met to be very friendly off the dance floor too. It really helps to get a flavor for the country when you can have engaging and open conversation with locals, and that was the case with my guides and instructors. Thank you!

I had a great time, my teachers were brilliant, and the trip to a milogna with one of your staff was really helpful. when i met up with my girlfirend, I was able to take her to a milogna that night, and we were able to tango, thank you so much.

My experience with Argentinia Tango has been great! I want to thank my teachers who have been very professional and very patient with me. I approached this beatiful dance as a beginner and I was a little frustrated not being able even to have the correct posture.

Below is my testimonial. I thought everything was good including the instructors. I enjoyed everything very much, great teachers, milonga and wonderful touring. The guides were also great. . Everything was very well organized in general although there are some things that can definitely be improved.

Argentina Tango: This is just to let you know that the accomodations that you arranged were excellent. The services you provided in addition to dancing were excellent. The two dance instructors which danced with me for six weeks were knowledgeable, fun and I truly had a good experience.

I thought everything was terrific including the instructors. I enjoyed everything very much, great teachers and wonderful touring and the guides were also great. Your people are so nice and I appreciated Carlos calling me to make sure I was happy. Thank you for everything, Nancy

I would like to say that I had an amazing time and was very impressed with the professionalism of your instructors and tour guide. Sergio, Matias and Andrea were absolutely spectacular and we learned much more about the music and the history than we thought we would.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and everyone, including hotel staff of Hotel Americano for being great and caring hosts of Buenos Aires. My guides: Cynthia, Alicia, Barbara, and Susana showed me their Buenos Aires.

10 Best Places for Tango in Buenos Aires

By Allie Lazar

Caf de Los Angelitos Tango Buenos Aires Argentina

"Without the streets nor dusks of Buenos Aires, a tango cannot be written,” famed poet Jorge Luis Borges once wrote about his beloved city. The vibrant nightlife scene truly never sleeps, especially inside the world of Argentina’s sultry dance. Go beyond the tango shows and explore underground milongas (dance halls) and live tango orchestras.

Maldita Milonga Tango Club Bar Buenos Aires Argentina

Maldita Milonga Arrow

The dance floor might be smaller than most tango clubs, but no one at Maldita Milonga seems to mind—because they're too busy having fun. This tango club pop-up on Wednesdays might just be the most popular night at Buenos Ayres Club, when a younger crowd puts on their tango shoes for a night of dancing.

Piazzolla Tango Tango Dance Amsterdam The Netherlands

Piazzolla Tango Arrow

Tucked inside the historical Galería Guemes, this Belle Epoque-style theater honors the tango legend Astor Piazzolla, arguably the most important composer to modernize tango. Here, his legacy lives on through a tango performance complete with a live musical ensemble, tango dancers, and world-famous singers.

Bar Los Laureles Tango Club Dance Hall Amsterdam The Netherlands

Bar Los Laureles Arrow

Not many places like Los Laureles still exist in Buenos Aires. The legendary tango bar dates back to the early 1900s, and since has been deemed a bar notable , or “historic site of cultural importance.” During the last century, some of the biggest names in the tango world have spent many hours playing and dancing tango in the iconic corner bar in Barracas, a barrio deep in the southern edge of BA.

Rojo Tango Tango Buenos Aires Argentina

Rojo Tango Arrow

If you caught a glimpse of Mick Jagger, Katy Perry, or Sting watching tango in Buenos Aires, you probably saw them at Rojo Tango, the crème de la crème of shows inside the Faena Hotel. Plush red leather banquettes, red carpet, and red drapes fill the cabaret-style space that runs this sensual and exclusive show.

Tango Queer Arrow

Every Tuesday night in San Telmo, Buenos Ayres Club transforms into Tango Queer, a LGBTQ milonga where customary gender rules get turned upside down. Since its inception a decade ago, Tango Queer has revolutionized the local scene, attracting all types of dancers looking to explore tango dynamics without censors or limitations.

Salón Canning Tango Dance Hall Amsterdam The Netherlands

Salón Canning (Milonga Parakultural) Arrow

Many of the city’s best dancers say that Salón Canning’s slick wood floors enhance every sultry move. This Palermo institution, which is also known as Milonga Parakultural, starts off most nights with a dance lesson before the professionals crowd in around 11 p.m. If you aren't confident of your skills, don’t worry: the milonga opens to spectators who simply want to grab a drink and watch the pros.

La Catedral Tango Buenos Aires Argentina

La Catedral Club Arrow

You might think you’re in the wrong place when you arrive at the door of La Catedral in Almagro, but look for the sign that says “tango” and head up the stairs. From there, you’ll enter the high-ceilinged warehouse, which used to be a dairy factory and now functions as an alternative tango dancehall. Bohemian tapestries, old guitars, vintage posters, Argentine flags, and tea lights cover the walls, making it look more like an antique shop than a milonga.

Caf de Los Angelitos Tango Buenos Aires Argentina

Café de Los Angelitos Arrow

This historic café and haunt of legendary tango singer Carlos Gardel opens its secret backroom drapes every night and transforms into a grand ballroom tanguería where 21 professional dancers glide through the history of tango in Argentina. Sure, parts of the experience may scream tourist central, but the excellent talent, music, costumes, production, and legacy make all the difference.

La Viruta Tango Dance Club Amsterdam The Netherlands

La Viruta Arrow

Located in the basement of the Armenian Cultural Center, La Viruta is one of the most welcoming spaces to dance the tango. The teachers are awesome, the vibe is friendly, and the crowd is a mix of tourists, expats, and locals. Everyone is here for one reason, and one reason only: to learn how to tango. Go earlier in the night and sign up for a lesson. More experienced dancers show up after midnight and put on a show. Best to just grab a table, watch, and learn.

El Beso Tango Dance Hall Amsterdam The Netherlands

El Beso Arrow

Almost every night of the week, advanced dancers hit the floor at this popular milonga. Fridays is La Marshall, a popular gay milonga, while Tuesday is Milonga Cachirulo for the professionals. Tango first-timers who are serious about entering the community can sign up for classes at La Academia, taught by seasoned veterans who instruct universal tango teachings and codes.

Buenos Aires Tango Shows & Activities

Tango dancers. 'Tango in Buenos Aires' -- see a show or learn some steps.

For many, tango is synonymous with Argentina.

Seeing a tango show in Buenos Aires is one of those obligatory tourist activities visitors feel compelled to do, just like seeing a Broadway production while visiting New York City.

While most of these glamorous shows have little to do with ‘real’ social tango as it’s danced in a milonga, the production levels are high and the shows are a fun night out to enjoy Argentina’s most famous cultural export .

Many of the professional performers are local legends and have participated in the Buenos Aires Tango Festival and World Cup .

Mora Godoy, choreographer of the Tango Porteña show listed below, famously danced with former U.S. President Obama when he visited Buenos Aires in 2016.

Almost all of the shows include an Andean folkloric segment in addition to tango, so the shows encompass a wider overview of traditional music and dance in Argentina.

Below is a curated list of Buenos Aires’ tango shows. There are a variety of shows on offer, from smaller, intimate theater-like shows to large, splashy productions with dozens of singers, musicians and dancers.

This list covers most of the shows, since there is no accounting for taste — only a few that have gained a reputation for providing a poor value have been intentionally left off.

Señor Tango Show

A pair of tango dancers do an acrobatic move at the Señor Tango Show.

Señor a Tango is a stylized Las Vegas-type show that continues to ride on its reputation as one of the city’s grandest tango productions. It is popular with locals, in part because it is one of the lowest-priced tango shows in the city. Due to the impassioned Spanish-only speaking parts, this production gets mixed reviews from foreigners who don’t understand Spanish.

The show is a mix of dancing, song and orchestral numbers, some veering very far from tango. Expect elaborate costumes, pyrotechnics, the appearance of live horses on stage and a spirited rendition of “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” for the finale.

Tango Porteño Show

Dancers onstage at the La Porteña tango show in Buenos Aires

Steps from the Obelisk , Tango Porteño highlights the ‘Golden Decade’ of Argentine tango, after World War II, when tango rose from the underground and became accepted by the general public.

Taking place in the theater Metro, this Broadway-style spectacle takes visitors back through a tango journey featuring the music of Canaro, Piazzolla, De Caro, Gobbi, D’Agostino and many others including Troilo and Pugliese. Dinner is a three-course meal with several optional entreés,  paired with Argentine wines.

Café de Los Angelitos Tango Show

The historic Café de los Angelitos is a popular Buenos Aires attraction for both locals and visitors. In the evening, the café hosts one of the city’s most popular and gimmick-free tango shows.

The dramatic show has an authentic ‘Golden era of tango’ feel and features a talented quintet, 14 well-choreographed dancers and two singers.

Madero Tango Show

Dancers onstage at the Madero Tango Show

One of Buenos Aires’ largest and glitzy tango productions, Madero Tango in the Puerto Madero neighborhood takes visitors through a tango journey, starting with its humble origins in the 19th century, through its popularity among the middle class, up to modern-day tango spin-offs including tango-jazz fusion and ‘tangotronica’ paired with aerial dance.

The show is directed by Gustavo Zajac, known for his work on Broadway, including Victor Victoria, Tangorama and Nine. This show features some of Argentina’s most well-known dancers, Laura Fidalgo and Hugo Paty. This glamour-filled extravaganza is for those looking for an energetic Broadway-style tango production. The dinner service staff is professional and attentive as well. This show is popular on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, as visitors are able to join the party and view fireworks in the neighborhood after the show.

La Ventana Show

A bandoneon player on stage at the La Ventana Tango Show

Set in an elegantly refurbished tenement building of San Telmo , La Ventana is one of the more intimate tango shows. The show includes music by the celebrated Juan D´Arienzo orchestra, two tango singers, eight evocative tango dancers and great costumes. The performance touches on other cultural highlights with an Andean folk music segment, folkloric ballet, an adept gaucho showing off cowboy skills and a patriotic, if predictable, ‘Don’t Cry for me Argentina’ climax.

Querandi Tango Show

Four pairs of costumed dancers on stage at the El Querandi Tango Show

Set in a historic 1867 hall a few steps from City Hall in Monserrat, this is one of the more intimate, low-key tango shows, known for its tight quartet on accordion, piano, violin and stand-up bass.

Joining them are two pairs of well-seasoned crooners and four sexily dressed couples dancing tango, following a plot line that focuses on the tango of the late 19th century until 1925. The accompanying dinner service here has a reputation of being one of the better ones among the tango shows.

Tango Esquina Carlos Gardel Show

In the Abasto neighborhood of the late tango great Carlos Gardel, this sensual tango show runs through the history of tango decade by decade with lots of fancy footwork.

Tango Esquina Carlos Gardel features a total of 25 performers on stage including a typical tango sextet led by Erica di Salvo, along with twelve dancers and two singers.

El Viejo Almacén Tango Show

Dancers performing on stage at the Viejo Almacen Tango Show in Buenos AIres

El Viejo Almacén is one of the smaller tango venues, located in a 200-year-old building in a traditional 3-story ‘tango temple’ in the San Telmo neighborhood .

This show is a good one for those looking for something more authentic and less Las Vegas.

The show includes a very professional sextet, precise dancing by four couples on a small stage, four singers and, as with several other shows, an interlude by an Andean folk group.

The dining area is separate from the actual tango venue. While the dinner here gets mixed reviews, travelers who stick to the Argentine specialty of steak usually leave happy.

Aljibe Tanguería Tango Show

The Aljibe Tango Dinner Show is a newer show that is popular with families, as it has an earlier start and end time than other tango shows in Buenos Aires.

This intimate show, set in a restored historic building in Monserrat, features professional dancers and musicians, and an excellent bandoneón player. This show highlights Argentina’s widely under-appreciated folkloric music and dance tradition, in addition to tango.

The classes are modified depending on the participants’ level of experience and are available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. near Plaza Serrano in Palermo.

⇒ Book a Private One-Hour Tango Class in Palermo, San Telmo or downtown Buenos Aires (*Price lowers with each additional participant, so recruit your friends!)

Take a lesson to get a handle on the tango basics and learn what you practice on the dance floor with local milongueros in the bona fide tango neighborhood of San Telmo.

Throughout the evening you’ll be in the company of an expert guide familiar with the local scene and able to explain the ‘ codigos ‘ (codes) of the dance floor. This tour is available in English or Spanish. Transportation and one non-alcoholic drink is included.

In that same instance, participants must state the name and surname of the author or authors of the choreography they will present (as it will be requested in the form to be completed). Couples may present different choreographies in the different stages of the contest.

2. At the time of the competition, at least ten couples must attend the qualifying rounds for the competition to be considered official (regardless of the number of couples previously registered). 2. All the decisions of the jury will not be subject to appeal. By enrolling, participants accept this condition. In case of distrust or disagreement, participants may submit a written statement (in Spanish or English) to THE ORGANIZATION and NOT directly to the panel of evaluating judges. Any jury member who may have had a work relationship or been the teacher of any of the participants of the Preliminary for a period of at least 6 months close to the beginning of the competition, may refrain from scoring such participant. For this purpose, both the voluntary statements of the Jury and the information provided by participants when enrolling will be taken into account. In these cases, to get the couple’s final score, the judges’ scores will be added, and this amount will be divided by the number of jury members who actually voted. The final score for each performance will result from the accumulation of points, given by each member of the jury on a scale of 1 to 10 (with decimals), in accordance with the criteria described in the EVALUATION CRITERIA per category (mandatory document, please read below).

3. The jury will choose a winning couple in each category. Also, the jury (with the agreement of THE ORGANIZATION) may grant awards and special mentions to the second and third place, and will be entitled to award other mentions if deemed appropriate.

4. In exceptional cases (power interruption, incidents on stage, etc.), the jury and the supervisor may determine that contestants should dance to additional songs to arrive at a fair verdict. Participants may not refuse to perform.

5. In case of a tie, the couples with the same final score will have to break the draw, either by dancing two additional songs in the Tango de Pista category, or by performing a new choreography in the stage tango category, until a winning couple emerges from the votes of the jury.

SUPERVISOR Appointed by BA FESTIVALS, the Supervisor will bear the responsibility of ensuring the compliance of the present Rules and properly solve any inconvenience not considered in these Rules and establish or inform about the clarifying or interpretative rules that he considers necessary.

FILMING AND PHOTOGRAPHING THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary reserves the right to record all the stages of THE COMPETITION, by any means known or to be known—including but not limited to filming, recording, photographing, digitalization, etc.—by itself or third parties, in order to promote and advertise the event. The recorded material obtained will be exclusive property of THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary, who will have to turn a copy of it, as established by the Collaboration Agreement, to BA FESTIVALS. By entering the Championship, participants explicitly and irrevocably authorize the use of the recorded material, without this suggesting—or implying—any compensation for any reason whatsoever by THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary and/or BA FESTIVALS, in favor of any person or organization that claims entitlement to any right that may be invoked. This clause also includes, without limitations, all photographic material published and/or made available for promotion, advertisement, etc.

A couple’s registration and subsequent check‐in implies knowledge and acceptance of these Rules by each one of the participants.

*Clarification about dance level:  Participation in both “Tango de Pista” and Stage Tango Categories competitions are open to everyone. Professional dancers and amateur dances of intermediate level and above compete in the same category according to the rules established by Tango Buenos Aires Dance World Cup. Adherence to these rules qualifies our competition to be recognized as valid by the main Buenos Aires event.

The distinction between a “professional” and “amateur” dance has less to do with the level of skill and more with a professional status of the dancers. “Professional” means that dancers make a living from teaching and dancing/performing tango, and “amateur” means that they do not, but it does not always imply that the level of the professional couple dance is superior to the level of the amateur couple.

There are dancers for whom tango is their main source of income. They are likely to be good instructors, but their level of dance and performance can vary: the professional couple can be excellent at dance or not so great. On the other hand, there are good amateur couples who do not teach tango and get no income from performances, but have achieved an exceptional level of dance. There is also the case of stage dancers who only dance choreographed pieces, but are helpless when it comes to social dancing: they cannot dance in milongas. Finally, there are very skilled social dancers (people who only dance in milongas), but who neither teach nor perform tango. They might be excellent salon dancers. To accommodate different ways in which dancers excel at tango, the two divisions for the competition were established: “Tango de Pista” (salon tango; social category for both amateurs and professional) and Stage Tango (performance category for amateur advanced level and professional level dancers).

  • Dancers may not lift his/her legs beyond the line of the knees. Embellishments are allowed within this limit.
  • It is not allowed to overtake.
  • Costumes will not be considered as a specific evaluation point in this category.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • All dancers will be evaluated individually by the Jury Panel who will determine a unique winner for each role.
  • Posture, elegance, technique, connection to the partner and walking style will be the main points of evaluation for all dancers.
  • For the leader’s role, the Judges will give special relevance to musicality, improvisation and navigation (take into account that leaders should avoid more than two musical phrases on the same spot, making it difficult for the round to circulate; they should constantly move counterclockwise without going backwards although it is allowed to perform one or two back steps if the movement requires it).
  • For the follower’s role, the Judges will give special relevance to the skill of following (anticipation or back leading will be penalized), and the footwork technique.

The 10 Best Tango Shows in Buenos Aires [Updated 2024]

There is nothing more quintessentially Buenos Aires than tango.

If you’re planning your visit to Argentina’s passionate capital city, then you absolutely must experience it in some way.

Even after 14 years of living in Buenos Aires, I’d still rather watch than dance.

I love going to tango shows and watching the pros!

This post has the top tango shows in Buenos Aires.

Some are large and some are more intimate, some luxurious, and others more budget-friendly, there’s something for everyone.

TLDR: The Best Buenos Aires Tango Shows , this article goes into detail for each show, in a hurry? Here are my favorites and why:

  • El Querandi | Small, historic venue, the show has a narrative and relates the story of the history of Tango
  • Aljibe Tango | The only early tango show, dinner is at 7 and the show kicks off at 8:15
  • La Ventana | Best show for both tango and folkloric music/dance
  • Señor Tango | Huge production, think Vegas style show with massive orchestra

The Best Tango Shows in Buenos Aires

The authentic tango that you’ll see in these Buenos Aires tango shows is very different than what you’ve seen in the movies.

The movements are complex.

The man signals to his partner with subtle cues that they’ve practiced religiously.

The tango you’ll see in a proper Buenos Aires tango show tells a passionate story and experiencing this romantic dance is one of the most quintessential Buenos Aires experiences.

I always take my friends to see tango when they visit. It’s a must!

But with so many shows on offer, I know it can get overwhelming.

This post will remove all the overwhelm and help you choose from the best tango shows in Buenos Aires for an unforgettable experience!

Helpful Tips for your Buenos Aires Tango Show:

  • Tango shows tend to start late, usually around 10 pm.
  • Most Tango Shows offer a dinner and it’s optional. For a budget tango show, opt for the show only.
  • Are the Tango show dinners worth it? I’ll be frank, it isn’t the best meal you’ll have in Argentina but it’s good enough. Book the included dinner to reduce stress if you’re worried about running from one place to another in time. But if you will be frustrated if the meal isn’t the best (I am this person), book somewhere nearby and go right when they open to make the show in time.
  • Some shows include transfers from your hotel. If you’re staying in an Airbnb, check if you can go to a nearby hotel to be picked up. Rideshare apps like Cabify are also excellent apps to download in Argentina to get to and from the show safely.
  • Drink all the Malbec and enjoy yourself!
  • For lessons and going dancing yourself, check out a milonga tour ! There is more information about that at the end of this post.

1. La Ventana – A Tango & Folkloric Show

View this post on Instagram A post shared by LA VENTANA 🇦🇷 Barrio de Tango (@laventanatango.ba)

What makes La Ventana in San Telmo stand out from the rest is that they include folkloric music.

Tango is the traditional music of Buenos Aires, but it’s far from the only traditional dance in Argentina.

This show allows you to see a more well-rounded show with music and dance from all over the country.

Chamame, chacarera, and zamba are just a few of these folkloric styles that hail from interior provinces like Salta and Santiago del Estero in the north.

They are VERY different from Tango and aren’t as common to see here in the city.

I LOVE them, you can see them danced by locals in the street at the Mataderos street market but nothing beats a professional show.

Why choose La Ventana?

This is one of the most popular tango shows in Buenos Aires, and it’s easy to see why. Despite being a larger venue with seating for 200, they offer excellent service and you will be well taken care of.

You’ll experience true Argentine culture here ranging from tango to gauchos with their 35 dancers and 2 orchestras.

This is the best option to absorb the most of what Argentina has to offer.

2. Rojo Tango – A Luxury Buenos Aires Tango Show

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rojo Tango (@rojotangoshow)

Rojo Tango is located inside the most exclusive luxury hotel in Buenos Aires, El Faena. Beyonce stayed in this hotel. I think that’s all I need to say.

This tango show stands out in the sea of tango shows in Buenos Aires.

Rojo Tango’s dancers are some of the best in town and they make use of their intimate Caberet-style space, at times even dancing among the audience!

If you’re looking to spoil yourself in Argentina, Rojo Tango is the ultimate indulgence.

Why Choose Rojo Tango?

This exclusive tango show is very intimate, allowing you to feel like part of the action rather than tucked away in the back corner of a large dance hall.

If you’re looking for pure luxury, it’s here at Rojo Tango: from the luscious décor, excellent dancers to the gourmet meal.

3. michelangelo Tango

View this post on Instagram A post shared by MICHELANGELO ⚜️ (@michelangelo.ba)

Michelangelo Tango is in a beautifully restored building in colonial San Telmo.

Dining in the restaurant is charming, with tables seated under bricked archways.

The bar, Dante, is very beautiful and the show itself features traditional folkloric music and dance along with tango.

It is a complete experience in an epic venue.

Why choose Michelangelo?

The dinners in most tango shows aren’t much to shake a stick at. They’re usually good but not great.

They provide the convenience of not having to make a separate, expertly timed dinner reservation but not much else.

Michelangelo , however, has a wonderful restaurant on property in a historic setting that you’ll be happy to dine in.

The fact that the show features folkloric music is a bonus I ALWAYS d, as well.

4. Aljibe Tango – Best EARLY Tango Show

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ALJIBE TANGO 🇦🇷 BA (@aljibetango.ba)

Aljibe Tango , like many shows on this Buenos Aires tango shows list, is in San Telmo.

It’s hard to beat a historic neighborhood for a proper tango show.

Aljibe offers both tango and folkloric music, something I love (and emphasize every chance I get).

You’ll see traditional dances in gaucho attire along with the sensual tango you’re there for, making for a well rounded cultural experience.

Why choose Aljibe Tango?

Two words: early nights.

Buenos Aires is the city that never sleeps and tango shows are typically very late with dinners starting at 8 and the dancing starting at 10 pm.

If that made you yawn, Aljibe is your show. Their dinner starts at a respectable 7 pm and the show kicks off at 8:15.

This also makes Aljibe the best tango show for families who want an early(ish) bed time for the kids.

If you want an early dinner book the 7 pm show and dinner package.

If you’d prefer to dine in a restaurant nearby then book only the show and plan for a late dinner (Argentina style) after the show.

5. El Viejo Almacen – A Classic Tango Show with History

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cena Show de Tango (@elviejoalmacentango)

El Viejo Almacen is located in the heart of the historic neighborhood of San Telmo.

This Buenos Aires tango house was founded in 1969, but the building goes back much further than that.

It was originally owned by immigrants and operated as a Russian Restaurant starting in 1900.

Stepping into El Viejo Almacen is like stepping into old-school Buenos Aires.

The name comes from the Tango song Sentimiento Gaucho and refers to an old general store (or almacen) near this location.

LOCAL TIP: If you want to skip the included dinner and instead eat in San Telmo. Two of my favorite steakhouses in Buenos Aires are just a few blocks away: Desnivel and La Brigada!

Why choose Viejo Almacen?

Buenos Aires’ most iconic tango artists have graced this stage, including: Aníbal Troilo, Osvaldo Pugliese, Roberto Goyeneche and Leopoldo Federico.

This is one of the most classic venues in town in one of the more historic neighborhoods in town.

There is a lot to see before or after the show in San Telmo and the performers are great.

6. Tango Porteño – Classic Tango Show + Optional Lesson

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tango Porteño (@tangoporteno_ok)

Tango Porteño is worth a visit not only for the show, but for it’s venue and its surroundings but know that it is a large venue (see the photo above).

It’s located on Cerrito Avenue just steps from the Obelisk.

Corrientes, just a block away, is the Times Square of Buenos Aires, filled with theaters, classic Buenos Aires pizzerias , and people everywhere at all hours.

The blocks surrounding the Obelisco are lined with iconic pizzerias and theaters featuring everything from tango to Broadway worthy plays.

The historic theater that houses Tango Porteño is stunning, reminiscent of the turn of the century grandeur that put Buenos Aires on the world stage.

Why choose Tango Porteño?

It’s a classic tango show offering excellent dancers and impressive costumes.

The restored theater will make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time.

It is a big theater so it doesn’t have the intimate vibe of a smaller venue but the show is very good with high production value.

For a full experience, opt for the tango dance lesson!

PRO-TIP : Skip the optional dinner and do Corrientes like a local, with pizza after the show! Nearby Guerrin has my favorite pizza in the entire city. Order a decadently cheesy slice of Muzza and eat at the bar.

7. Piazzolla Tango – Homage to a great composer

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Teatro Astor Piazzolla (@astorpiazzollateatro)

Piazzolla Tango is yet another tango show that pays homage to one of Buenos Aires’ great tango figures.

Astor Piazzolla was born in Mar del Plata and spent part of his childhood in New York, moving to Buenos Aires to study.

This show in the stunning Galeria Guemes downtown features his compositions.

Over the years he befriended Carlos Gardel and performed in Anibal Troilo Pichuco’s orchestra. He was a great composer and bandoneon player.

The music in this tango and dinner show pays tribute to his great works.

Why choose Piazzolla Tango?

Go for the location, a restored Art-Nouveau theater. It was built in 1915 and is reminiscent of the richer days of Buenos Aires’ past when it really felt like the Paris of South America.

PRO-TIP : The theater is in Galeria Guemes on Calle Florida downtown. There is a roof top bar in the same building called Florida 165.

Go here for drinks afterwards for a priceless view of the most beautiful cuppolas in town (make reservations via the Whatsapp number found on their Instagram ).

8. El Querandi – My Favorite Tango Show in buenos Aires

View this post on Instagram A post shared by El Querandi Dinner Tango Show (@elqueranditangoshow)

El Querandi is located in a historic mansion mere blocks from Plaza de Mayo.

This is my favorite tango show in the city.

I even took my parents here when they visited me for the first time here! They loved it just as much as I did.

El Querandi’s venue is small and even though we were in a table on the side of the room towards the back we still had an excellent view of the stage.

El Querandi as a venue was established in 1920 but the building has been here since 1867, making it one of the oldest and historic on this list.

It is only a few blocks from Plaza de Mayo in San Telmo.

Why choose El Querandi?

The singers are excellent and the small venue provides a great experience regardless of where you are seated.

The historic mansion is a bonus that creates a unique ambiance.

Perhaps I am partial because this was one of the first shows I went to, but I really love El Querandi.

The costumery and the show held my attention captive until the very end.

9. Café de los Angelitos – Tango show in an Iconic Cafe

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Café de los Angelitos (@cafedelosangelitos)

Cafe de los Angelitos is in one of the city’s historic coffee houses called bares notables, established in 1890.

This cafe served as a meeting point for the city’s intellectuals, poets and artists, including the tango legend Carlos Gardel.

The walls are covered in photographs documenting the cafe’s history.

I have yet to attend their tango show but I used to regularly visit El Angelitos for coffee since I worked in an office on this block.

The dining room is very beautiful, a well-preserved relic of Argentina’s wealthy past.

It’s worth going for tea time even if you can’t make their tango show.

Cafe de los Angelitos is in Congreso, just a few blocks from the Congress Building. If you’re nearby during the day, make the detour for a coffee here!

Why choose Cafe de los Angelitos?

This venue is iconic in Buenos Aires. The show takes place in a theater behind the coffee shop’s dining room and it is decorated decadently.

The stage is set up above the dining tables, allowing everyone to have a clear view of their 21 dancers.

This is the show I have yet to see that I want to see the most. I’ve heard the production is excellent with incredible dancers and gorgeous costumes.

The location is also very easy to reach, just a short drive from downtown, not far from neither San Telmo nor Palermo.

10. Señor Tango – The Best Tango Show in Buenos Aires

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Señor Tango Oficial (@senortango)

Señor Tango boasts outstanding dancers, singers, and orchestra.

This wildly popular show’s creator, Fernando Soler, has won multiple awards and is the most distinguished and recognized in the industry today.

The production is excellently done, with special effects and a screen displaying images that accompany the dancers on stage.

Señor Tango can easily claim to be the best tango show in Buenos Aires. It is the most in-demand and most highly reviewed.

A close friend of mine went to their show last year and still raves about it today. Her favorite souvenir was a passionately posed photo cheek to cheek with the singer!

The theater is a bit far from the city center in the southern barrio of Barracas so I do recommend taking advantage of their transport or taking a taxi to get there.

Why Choose Señor Tango?

It is the best Buenos Aires tango show on offer at the moment.

The high quality of the singing, dancing and orchestra is guaranteed and you will not leave disappointed.

The venue is very large, so keep that in mind if you’d prefer a more intimate experience ( El Querandi is ideal for that).

The production can also feel very dramatic and over the top with a lot of focus on the main singer versus the entire team of dancers. It really comes down to the type of experience you are looking for.

All that being said, it’s one of the highest rated and most popular shows for a reason!

BONUS: Milongas & Tango Lessons in Buenos Aires

There are two main ways to see tango in Buenos Aires: in a tango show or in a milonga.

Tango shows, like those listed above, are highly produced and geared towards foreign tourists visiting Argentina.

I am NOT insinuating they aren’t amazing experiences.

I tend to lean towards more local experiences over touristy and gimmicky ones but tango shows are different.

The tango they display is professional, authentic, and I highly recommend going.

There is no gimmick or tackiness in a produced tango show.

But if you’re fascinated by the dance (and why wouldn’t you be) and want to learn more, I recommend a lesson or one of the milonga tours below:

  • Learn tango with private lessons
  • This Milonga Tour includes two milongas in one night, so you’ll get to see a lot!
  • Detour BA’s Milonga Tour visits local milongas with a private or semi-private group for a hyper local experience, use code SOLSALUTE to save 10%

what is the dress code for Tango shows? Especially the more fancy ones in 5* Hotels and with diner. Since we do not bring tuxedos and evening dresses with us on travel, is it possible to attend with jeans, sneakers and a simple shirt? Or would this be not suitable?

Hahah leave the tuxes at home, I’d say smart casual is fine. Don’t wear your athleisure-wear but a nicer top with jeans is completely fine.

Thank you very much. We found Michelangelo charming and quaint. Your article was priceless.

Thank you!!

tango lessons in buenos aires

Buenos Aires is known as the birthplace of tango, a passionate and seductive dance that has become a symbol of Argentine culture. For those who want to fully immerse themselves in the tango scene, taking lessons at a tango school in Buenos Aires is a must. In this article, we’ll explore the best tango schools in Buenos Aires, the history of tango, and why it’s so important to the city’s identity.

Tango Lessons in Buenos Aires

The History of Tango:

Tango is a dance form that originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the late 19th century. It is a combination of various music styles such as African, European, and indigenous rhythms. Tango has been an integral part of Argentine culture and has spread worldwide as one of the most popular dance forms.

The history of tango can be traced back to the immigrant neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, specifically the port district of La Boca. The city was experiencing a rapid influx of immigrants from various parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia. The immigrant communities brought with them their music, dance, and culture, which resulted in a blend of different styles and genres.

Initially, tango was considered a dance form for the lower classes of society. It was often performed in the street corners, brothels, and bars of Buenos Aires. However, as the dance form grew in popularity, it slowly started to gain acceptance among the middle and upper classes.

The first tango song, “El entrerriano,” was composed in 1897 by Argentine musician Rosendo Mendizábal. The song became an instant hit and helped establish tango as a recognized music genre.

In the early 20th century, tango began to spread beyond Argentina’s borders, reaching other parts of South America and Europe. Tango gained immense popularity in Paris in the 1920s, and the dance form became synonymous with French culture.

Tango also became a symbol of Argentine nationalism and identity. It played a significant role in the country’s struggle for independence and the fight against colonialism. Tango was used as a form of cultural resistance against the oppressive military regimes that ruled Argentina in the 20th century.

Today, tango continues to be an essential part of Argentine culture and a popular dance form worldwide. The city of Buenos Aires is known as the world capital of tango, and tourists flock to the city to experience its vibrant music and dance scene. Tango festivals, competitions, and performances are held throughout the year, attracting tango enthusiasts from all over the world.

In conclusion, the history of tango in Argentina is a story of cultural exchange and diversity. The dance form’s origins can be traced back to the immigrant neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, where it evolved into a unique and distinct style. Tango’s popularity spread beyond Argentina’s borders, and it became a symbol of Argentine identity and nationalism. Today, tango remains an essential part of Argentine culture and a testament to the country’s rich and diverse history.

The Importance of Tango in Buenos Aires:

Tango is more than just a dance in Buenos Aires; it’s a way of life. It’s played in restaurants, clubs, and on street corners, and it’s celebrated in festivals and competitions throughout the year. Tango has become a symbol of the city’s identity, representing its diversity, passion, and creativity.Tango is not just a dance in Buenos Aires – it’s a way of life. Born in the late 19th century in the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, tango has since become the cultural heartbeat of the city. With its origins in the music and dance of immigrants from Italy, Spain, and Africa, tango is a melting pot of different cultures and traditions. Today, tango is an integral part of the city’s identity, and there are few better ways to experience the Argentinean way of life than by learning to dance the tango. Whether you’re a local or a traveler passing through, tango has something to offer everyone.

The Best Tango Schools in Buenos Aires: If you’re looking to learn tango, there are plenty of options in Buenos Aires. Here are some of the best tango schools in the city:

  • La Viruta: La Viruta is one of the most popular tango schools in Buenos Aires, offering classes for all levels and styles of tango. They have a lively and welcoming atmosphere, with nightly milongas (social dance events) that attract dancers from all over the world.
  • Escuela Argentina de Tango: This tango school is located in the historic San Telmo neighborhood and offers a range of classes for all levels, as well as private lessons and workshops. They also have a cultural center where students can learn about the history and evolution of tango.

Lunfardo: The Secret Language of Tango

Lunfardo is a dialect that originated in Buenos Aires during the late 19th century. It was mainly used by the underclass, including criminals and tango dancers, to communicate without being understood by authorities. As tango became popular, Lunfardo was also adopted by the middle class and eventually became an essential part of Argentine culture.

Many of the terms in Lunfardo have their roots in Italian, Spanish, and indigenous languages. Some of the most common words used in tango include:

  • Milonga: This term refers to both a style of tango music and dance and the place where it is performed.
  • Lunfardo: The word Lunfardo itself means “rogue” or “street-wise” and is often used to describe the dialect itself.
  • Canyengue: This is a type of tango dance that is characterized by a more fluid, relaxed style than the traditional ballroom tango.
  • Botón: This term originally meant “button” but is now used to refer to a police officer.
  • Gardel: Carlos Gardel is considered the most famous tango singer in history and is often referred to as the “King of Tango.”
  • Laburar: This is a Lunfardo term that means “to work.”
  • Tano: This is a slang term used to refer to Italians, who were some of the earliest immigrants to Argentina and played a significant role in the development of tango.
  • Morfar: This term means “to eat” and is derived from the Italian word “mangiare.”
  • Tango: The word “tango” itself has disputed origins, but many believe it comes from the African Bantu language, where it means “to dance.”
  • Candombe: This is a style of music and dance that originated in African slave communities and played a significant role in the development of tango.

Today, Lunfardo continues to be an essential part of Argentine culture, and many of its words and expressions have been adopted into the Spanish language worldwide.

5 traditional tango neighborhoods in Buenos Aires that you should know

tours de tango buenos aires

If you are a lover of tango or just are planning on traveling to Buenos Aires, immerse yourself in the 2x4 rhythm of the tango in these 5 neighborhoods filled with tango traditions that you will fall in love with. This city was not only the homeland of Tango for the last few decades of the nineteenth century but its beautiful neighborhoods have also been a source of inspiration for many composers who portray its streets and stories through their lyrics.

1- La Boca, the birthplace of tango

La boca will take you to the very roots of tango as it is one of the neighborhoods in which this dance originated.

It is located on the southeastern edge of the city, along Río de la Plata , right at the mouth of the Riachuelo. La Boca will take you to the very roots of tango as it is one of the neighborhoods in which this dance originated, right next to the brothels of the por t. Its first inhabitants were mostly Italian immigrants attracted by the city's port activity. During the last decades of the nineteenth century, they built their houses of wood and zinc and painted them with the colors left over from the painting the ships . This was the source of its colorful and particular appearance that still can be seen today.

While touring La Boca, make sure you don’t miss walking the “Caminito”. This is one of the most traditional and emblematic passages of the city with its taverns, convents, painting exhibitions and tango couples who dance in the street while being photographed by hundreds of tourists.

Top 3 tours in La Boca:

  • San Telmo and La Boca Walking Tour
  • Sustainable Tour in La Boca
  • Urban Art Tour through La Boca

2- Abasto, the childhood home of some of the greatest figures in tango history

It is the birthplace of the great singer carlos gardel.

This area can be found among the Balvanera and Almagro neighborhoods. It is known as one of the most tango-filled neighborhoods of the city because it is the birthplace of the great singer Carlos Gardel (el “Morocho del Abasto”) and A níbal Troilo , "the biggest bandoneón of Buenos Aires", composer and director of one of the most important musical formations of Argentine tango.

A tour of the neighborhood can start from the metro station that flows into the "Paseo del Tango" , christened Carlos Gardel Station.

Between the streets Jean Jaures, Anchorena, Carlos Gardel, and Zelaya, you can visit a tango-themed circuit, with life-size sculptures of important singers and tango composers such as Troilo, Goyeneche and Tita Merello. Inaugurated in 2014, with the purpose of spreading its history and culture, you can visit the "Paseo del Tango" on your own or through guided tours where you will learn more about these historical figures.

Also in Abasto is the Carlos Gardel Museum , located in the house that the singer bought from his mother in 1927. Inside you will find covers of newspapers and magazines from that period, relics of the "Zorzal Criollo" and a chronological tour of more than 800 recordings.

3- Boedo, from bar to bar

It was in many of the bars and cafes of boedo that composers gave rise to great argentine tangos  .

The classic corner of San Juan y Boedo was immortalized in the tango "Sur" of 1948, through the verses of Homero Manzi but for a long time before that, there was the tango "Mi Boedo querido" by José Milano. It was in many of the bars and cafes of this neighborhood that composers and musicians such as Osvaldo Pugliese and Homero Manzi gave rise to great Argentine tangos.

We recommend that you explore either by bike or on foot and tour each of the historical sites of the area such as the neighborhood clubs, the corners that still retain old street lamps and the typical bars. Among these emblematic places, the ones that stand out are confectionery "Trianón" , the "Esquina Osvaldo Pugliese", the "Esquina Homero Manzi', the tango school "Boedo", the bar "Esquina Sur" and the café "Florida".

Travel tip: Reserve the Esquina Homero Manzi Tango Show and get to know the traditions of Bodeo.

4- San Telmo and its typical Houses of the Golden Age of Tango

Here there are a great variety of tango houses such as "el querandi".

You can practically smell tango in the air of San Telmo. Here there are a great variety of Tango Houses such as "El Viejo Almacén" or "El Querandi" where you can enjoy a sample of the most authentic Argentine artistic expression. This typical old Buenos Aires neighborhood, full of history, with restored houses from the early 1900s, still lifes, and cobbled streets, is an ideal place to walk around while discovering the porteño past.

We recommend that you visit during Friday or Saturday evenings , because in front of its central square, Plaza Dorrego, there are many restaurants with outdoor tables and live tango shows "a la gorra".

Top 3 tango shows in San Telmo:

  • El Viejo Almacén
  • El Querandí

5- Milongas and tanguerías in Almagro

almagro is full of milongas and cultural centers that invite you to come to practice tango.

Almagro is another of the 48 official neighborhoods into which the porteño capital is divided, and is definitely one of the most traditional. It is located in an area very close to the city center, easily accessible, with a bohemian air and a great tango spirit. Many of the great figures of tango spent time among its streets and bars.

Within a radius of a few blocks, it brings together traditional places such as The Boliche de Roberto, founded in 1893 and the Bar Notable, where great figures of the environment such as Osvaldo Peredo and Ariel Ardit were consecrated. Almagro is full of milongas and cultural centers that invite you to come to practice tango, take beginner classes or just enjoy an evening to the rhythm of 2x4. Book the Milonga Experience online and feel the Argentinian rhythm for yourself!

10 Unique Hidden Gems in Buenos Aires: A Local's Guide

A re you visiting Buenos Aires, Argentina and looking for unique experiences and hidden gems to add to your itinerary? Then look no further!

In this post, long-time resident Rebecca is sharing her ten favorite unique hidden gems in Buenos Aires. These are perfect for escaping the crowds at Caminito and the Recoleta Cemetery and exploring some more authentic and less-visited places in Buenos Aires!

You’ll find everything from hidden tango spots to international street art and secret gardens – there are so many things to do in Buenos Aires that you’ve probably never heard of!

Let’s explore the lesser-known hidden gems of Buenos Aires!

Unique Things to do in Buenos Aires, Argentina

#1 tango spirit and history in almagro.

At the top of every visitor’s list of what to do in Buenos Aires, Argentina is certainly experiencing the country’s famous tango culture. The Almagro neighborhood is the perfect place to explore the more authentic side!

Almagro is a busy neighborhood only a few subway stops from the city center of Buenos Aires. It has a less polished feel to it than Palermo or Recoleta, and few tourists seem to find their way to Almagro.

However, if you want to get a feel of what life in Buenos Aires is about, then consider a visit to Almagro! Try one of the local restaurants in the area or wander the streets to absorb everyday life in Buenos Aires.

Almagro is a great spot to learn more about tango. On the quiet street Jean Jaures in Almagro, you will find the museum and childhood home of Argentine tango legend, Carlos Gardel.

Down the street from the museum, there is a sidewalk called Pasaje Carlos Gardel . Here you will find traditional bars, tango-inspired street art, and a monument of Carlos Gardel.

Jean Jaures Street also showcases several houses covered in the iconic local way of decorating signs and windows, called fileteado porteño . The houses were made in an initiative to promote and preserve the classic way of decorating in Buenos Aires.

In Almagro, you will find the locally famous landmark, the Abasto Shopping Mall. The Abasto Shopping Mall used to be the central market for wholesale fruit and vegetables. However, today it is a modern shopping mall with clothing stores and a large cinema.

During the day there is no problem walking around Almagro. But if you are going for a tango show in the evening, you might want to be extra careful – and keep your phone and cameras in your bag!

#2 Street Art Tour in Coghlan

When people talk about street art in Buenos Aires , they normally highlight Palermo as the place to go. But have you heard about Coghlan?

Coghlan is a true hidden gem in Buenos Aires for street art lovers!

The neighborhood of Coghlan is located in the northwestern part of Buenos Aires. The area is primarily residential but features an impressive international street art scene.

You can find murals from international street artists such as Mexican artist Quack Zean, American artist Stacey Williams-Ng, and Italian street artist Alice Pasquini – to just name a few!

The biggest and most famous mural in the area is by Argentine street artist Martin Ron. Martin Ron has contributed to many amazing murals around Buenos Aires.

Martin Ron’s mural in Coghlan dates back to 2013. The mural was made in collaboration between the local organization, Buenos Aires Street Art , and the local City Government of Buenos Aires. The mural showcases a young boy with sculpture-like features sitting on one edge of a skateboard and a cut-off head floating over the other edge.

Buenos Aires Street Art Tours offers an interesting guided walking tour around Coghlan where you visit the many amazing murals and hear the stories about them. It’s very affordable and a nice small group! If you don’t feel like doing the tour, you can always hop on the local train or subway and explore Coghlan on your own though you won’t get the history and context.

#3 The Mataderos Market

The Mataderos Market in Buenos Aires is a true hidden gem in the city and the perfect way to experience Argentine folk dance and gaucho culture.

A gaucho is the Argentine equivalent of a cowboy in the U.S. The gaucho culture is a very important part of modern-day Argentina’s cultural and historical heritage, especially in the countryside of Argentina.

At Feria de Mataderos , as the market is called in Spanish, you can find stalls with leather goods, beautifully decorated knives, and, of course, lots of different Argentine mate cups.

Mate is a traditional Argentinian tea-like drink with high levels of caffeine. The mate is closely associated with the gaucho culture, and a culturally important ritual for many people in Argentina today.

The Mataderos market is held in the neighborhood of Mataderos on the outskirts of Buenos Aires on Sundays from April to December. In case of bad weather, the market might cancel.

To get to the Matadors Market, you can take the bus, a taxi, or Uber. From the city center, it takes approximately 30 minutes by car. And from Palermo, it takes 45 minutes. By bus, it takes about an hour from both the center and Palermo.

#4 Day Trip to the Local Winery Gamboa

Gamboa Winery is a perfect day trip from Buenos Aires if you love wine – or don’t have time to go to Argentina’s wine capital, Mendoza!

Bodega Gamboa is located in the Campana area of Buenos Aires province. Campana is around 65 miles from the center of Buenos Aires. When you arrive, it feels like you have driven out into the middle of nowhere.

The visit to the winery consists of a small tour of the area. They introduce you to the history of the place and the wine they produce. Afterward, there is a delicious lunch with accompanying wine. The winery only recently opened its doors to the public, and it’s still a well-kept hidden gem in Buenos Aires.

The production of wine from Bodega Gamboa is still limited. So, you have to be lucky to hit a time when they still have some of their wine left. When I visited the place, Gamboa’s wine was sold out. The owners have sought out wineries around Argentina that supply them with high-quality wine.

You can book the visit directly with Bodega Gamboa or with an organized tour including transportation to the winery. If you book the visit yourself, you should bear in mind that you need to arrange a taxi or an Uber to get to and from Campana. There is no public transportation. At the winery, the staff speak limited English. If you book an organized tour, the tour organizers will arrange transport and an English-speaking guide for you.

#5 Buenos Aires’ Most Unique Church

The architecture in Buenos Aires is well-known for its gorgeous mansions and impressive palaces dotted between skyscrapers and building blocks.

However, if you want to experience a unique hidden gem in Buenos Aires’ architectural scene, then add the church Basílica de Maria Auxiliadora y San Carlos to your list!

This church is properly Buenos Aires’ most unique church. With its lolly-pop stripped interior and beautiful details, it can take the breath away from most.

Basílica de Maria Auxiliadora y San Carlos is located in the neighborhood of Almagro. From the city center, you can hop on the subway’s blue A-line to Castro Barros or the red B-line to Medrano and walk to the church.

You can easily visit Basílica de Maria Auxiliadora y San Carlos and the tango part of Almagro on the same day.

#6 Artis Bar in San Telmo

The neighborhood of San Telmo in itself invites mystery and hidden gems. And Artis Bar is no exception!

This bar is located inside what once upon a time was a Jesuit convert. From the outside, it looks like any other restaurant in Buenos Aires. But as you walk through the main house towards the terraces in the back, a whole other experience is revealed before your eyes.

In the back, the terraces on multiple levels are covered with plants and sculptures. It creates the perfect atmosphere for a spectacular hidden gem in Buenos Aires.

The construction dates back to the 1890s. Over time, the building transformed from a convert to a tenement for European immigrants, and then a hotel, and a craft market. Since 2020, the mansion has been the bar and restaurant that you can visit today.

#7 The Hidden Sidewalk in San Telmo, Pasaje de la Defensa

Many travelers visit Defensa Street when in San Telmo. The street is famous for hosting the popular San Telmo Sunday Market. However, most visitors overlook Pasaje de la Defensa , an old sidewalk just off the popular Defensa Street.

Pasaje de la Defensa , or translated Defense Passage, used to be the patio of the Ezeiza family’s mansion in San Telmo. The mansion was built in the 1880s and featured two floors with rooms facing the interior patios.

Today, the patios of the mansion have been turned into a shopping arcade of antique and handcraft shops.

When you visit San Telmo, make time to explore both Artis Bar and Pasaje de la Defensa.

#8 The Secret Gardens in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires has not always been the cosmopolitan big city that you experience today. Back in time, many of the neighborhoods used to be on the outskirts of the city featuring large country houses, estancias in Spanish, with beautiful green gardens.

While many of these country houses have been demolished and changed into large apartment or office buildings, some of them remain today.

Around Buenos Aires, you will find some of these old mansions turned into museums of their previous owners. The best thing about these old mansions is that behind their tall walls, they hide beautiful secret gardens.

Close to the city center in the neighborhood of Retiro, you can visit an old mansion, known as the Noel Palace. The mansion is well-preserved and features a beautiful Spanish-inspired garden. It’s a perfect spot to slow down while getting a feeling of what Buenos Aires used to be like.

In Palermo, you can visit the Richard Rojas Museum and explore its beautiful patio and secret garden. The mansion stands with many of the original artifacts from the previous owner, Ricard Rojas, an Argentine journalist.

Head to Belgrano, to check out the Larreta Museum of Spanish Art. Passing through the museum, you will find a beautiful Andalusian patio.

Not many international travelers have heard about these secret gardens in Buenos Aires , so you can be sure to explore these hidden gems in Buenos Aires mostly on your own!

#9 Local Food Court, Patio de los Lecheros

Patio de los Lecheros is a local food court located in the neighborhood of Caballito in Buenos Aires.

The food court has been increasingly popular among locals but still remains a hidden gem for most tourists visiting Buenos Aires.

Translated Patio de los Lecheros means the milkmen’s patio. The area used to be the train station where the milk arrived from the countryside to Buenos Aires. The train station worked until 1961 when it was closed down.

Today, the area has been turned into a colorful food heaven. In Patio de los Lecheros, you can try everything from local Argentine specialties to international classics.

The food court is open Sunday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m.

Check the Instagram for Patio de los Lecheros for any updates or changes.

#10 Bike tour to the Memory Park

The Memory Park is a large public park located by the river banks of Río de La Plata in the northern part of Buenos Aires.

The full name of the park in Spanish is El Parque de la Memoria – Monumento a las Víctimas del Terrorismo de Estado, which translates to the Memory Park – Monument for the Victims of State Terrorism.

The park’s name refers to the state-sponsored terrorism during Argentina’s last military dictatorship. The epoch in Argentina’s history is also frequently referred to as the Dirty War.

Throughout the park, you can experience different artwork and sculptures that tell the story of this dark time in Argentina’s past. The largest and most impactful piece is a wall with engraved names of all the victims.

The military dictatorship in Argentina ended in 1983 after the defeat in the Falkland War ( Guerra de las Malvinas in Argentina). However, during most of the 1970s, the military dictatorship illegally kidnapped and detented political opponents. There are always two sides to a story, and up until today the Dirty War still politically divides Argentina.

The Memory Park is an interesting place to visit to learn more about Argentina’s past while enjoying its off-the-beaten-path location by the river.

Rent a bike and take the waterfront path, Costanera, up to the Memory Park. On your way, you will also pass Buenos Aires’ second airport, Aeroparque Jorge Newberry.

Keeping time in Buenos Aires: TikTok to Tango, Maradona to Madonna

Arriving late on a Saturday night in Puerto Madero is no problem. Few people have eaten supper yet and the restaurants either side of the Rio Dique canal are up and busy, well past midnight.

Buenos Aires is a city that keeps its own time and is a gift to jet-lagged travellers.

Often feted as the Paris of the South, Naples on La Plata might be more accurate. This part of Argentina divides its cultural and culinary heritage like a pizza, with the Italian-Argentine “Tanos” making up a healthy portion of the pie.

As my airport taxi driver proclaimed, he was proudly a quarter-slice Italian.

Waves of immigration from Spain, France and southern Italy mean almost 70 per cent of the city has some claim to Mediterranean heritage. You can see why they call it “pizza porteña”: food that arrived via the port. It’s difficult to find a bad slice.

A mix of European architecture cobbled together with ibis birds and vibrant jacaranda trees make the mestizo city easy to slip into from a 15-hour flight via Santiago from Auckland. The up-all-night attitude only adds to an addled time clock.

The Madonna on the Puente de la Mujer, or Woman's Bridge, in Buenos Aires. Photo / Thomas Bywater

Nowhere is this more obvious than the drive in front of the Hilton on Avenue Macacha Güemes, past the floodlit Puente de la Mujer – Woman’s Bridge – and the rigging of the museum ship Presidente Sarmiento. I am met by a crowd of 200 to 300 neon-lit rollerskaters and a sound system.

I asked one rollerblader, wearing a superhero cape and fairy lights, what the event was and he seemed to think it was self-evident.

“Halloween,” he said, as a ghostbuster skated past.

It did not seem to matter that it was already late November. Buenos Aires is a city that keeps its own time.

Sunday Morning in San Telmo

Argentina – the birthplace of both Pope Francis and Diego Maradona – has two religions: football and Catholicism.

Walking the streets of central Buenos Aires today, you’re as likely to see a shrine to the Golden Boy and former Boca Juniors No 10 as you are to the Madonna and child.

On the 30-minute walk south from Puerto Madero to San Telmo, both icons are everywhere. It might be the ultimate game of BA bingo. From La Donna on Puente de la Mujer through the cobbled Calle Bolivar, you will find a painting of the young Maradona midway through the so-called “Goal of the Century” during the 1986 World Cup. For soccer street art aficionados, you can take a paid tour of the shrines to the country’s stars of past and present. ( buenosairesstreetart.com ). An increasingly popular option is visiting graffito of some young upstart called Lionel Messi. However, you don’t need to look hard for public art dedicated to Maradona.

Ecce Diego: Diego Maradona is everywhere in Buenos Aires. Photo / Thomas Bywater

At one point I am stopped by a cardboard cutout of Maradona: “Ecce Diego”. Notably a good head and shoulders taller than the 1.65-metre star ever was, there is a queue of tourists stopping for selfies.

At fulltime, it’s Madonna 4, Maradona 5.

Finally, we make it to the entrance to Mercado San Telmo. The indoor market is one of the city’s most popular arcades. Built in 1897, it’s a Belle Époque maze of cafes and stalls. Fill up on empanadas and a glass of malbec or coffee and pastries, smothered in dulce de leche. Or even more pizza.

The 1.3 hectares of covered market feels like the South American cousin of a Parisian mall with its glass stalls and restaurants. All are at their busiest on a Sunday morning.

Around the corner at Plaza Dorrego is another weekend staple, the Sunday flea markets. You’ll find knick-knacks from the length of South America and Europe: racks of 1920s trinkets, coats of genuine coypu and chinchilla fur, genuine fleas.

It’s a great place to haggle for souvenirs, if you’ve always wanted a wooden chai mate cup and straw.

Every Sunday, the jacaranda-lined square is also the setting for one of the city’s best-known activities, tango.

When I wrote Buenos Aires had but two religions, I may have misstated. (Culpa mia!)

There would be no Argentina without the tango. And the Plazo is a pilgrimage site for dance enthusiasts from around the world. From midday, Pedro Benavente “The Indian” turns up for his weekly masterclass in milonga, a precursor to Argentine tango. Arriving in red leather shoes, he taped flattened cardboard to the square to create an impromptu dance floor. And they’re off, in the 2/4 time signature.

Passing the hat at the end of the dance, he asks where his audience are from. The spectacle draws huge crowds of doting señoras of a certain age. A few are offered the chance to share a dance – though many are here to ogle Benavente’s broad shoulders, intense brow and thick black ponytail.

Evita and the Cementerio de la Recoleta

Having tallied the Madonnas on the way to la Boca, there is one that didn’t immediately come to mind. The grave of Eva Perón in the Cementerio de la Recoleta is one of the city’s most visited attractions. The “spiritual leader of the nation” and subject of a Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, she was played in the film – of course – by Madonna Louise Ciccone.

One wonders what “Evita” would have thought of being played by the Material Girl.

Or, as the left-leaning hero who went from poverty to political powerhouse, what she would think of charging a $10 to $15 entry fee to visit her grave. She is definitely the biggest draw to the shady necropolis containing 4500 tombs.

“Don’t cry for me, Argentina,” she sang – so I did not.

Instead, I headed along the brick cemetery walls to the Centro Cultural Recoleta. Despite being in the centre of the country’s largest cemetery, this public arts centre is alive and kicking.

The venue hosts cinema, art and music. Central to the network of galleries is a 200-square-metre public dance studio, open for free, from Tuesday to Sunday.

It’s a long way away from San Telmo, about a 25-minute taxi ride away. There is no tango to speak of. Instead, it is full of people filming music videos and TikTokers practising their routines.

While dance draws tourists from around the world to the Río de la Plata, this is perhaps not what they are thinking of. Though it is everywhere.

Heading back to Puerto Madero along the Calle Olga Cossettini, I can’t help but notice the reflection of dance troupes perfecting choreography in the mirrored hotel’s windows.

Although it’s TikTok, not tango, dictating the rhythm of the barrios today, the spirit is alive and well.

Yes, Buenos Aires is a city that keeps its own time.
