2021 Nissan Armada Review: Enclosed Trailer Towing Test and a Fresh New Face

The more discerning enthusiasts among us have dragged Nissan for a while now, accusing them of letting products wither on the vine a bit, to include their largest SUV. The Nissan Armada has been with us since the 2005 model year, and is – surprisingly? – only in its second generation, which launched in 2017. Forget enthusiasts, though, as second-generation Armada sales figures have been relatively strong since its big update four years ago. Nissan has sold nearly as many Armadas annually from 2017 onward as they did when it was introduced to the world that first year, in 2005.

Nissan is undergoing a bit of a cultural shift, their old CEO having fled Japan in a sound system’s shipping case to avoid charges of financial misconduct, a story that is somehow totally appropriate given it took place in 2020. In any case, Nissan’s got some new leadership and they’re launching some new vehicles that appear to handily shed the “withered” vibe – 400Z, Ariya, Pathfinder, Frontier, and so on. Of course, their big body-on-frame SUV has been due for some updates alongside the others, and they have arrived in the form of the facelifted 2021 Nissan Armada.

What Is It?

This is a 2021 Nissan Armada Platinum. The Armada lineup was given a little bit of bumper Botox and treated to a fresh interior for the 2021 model year. Nissan’s questionable two-screen infotainment has been replaced with a single, simpler 12 inch widescreen, real buttons and knobs (!) for climate control, and a wireless phone charger and wireless Apple CarPlay. Android Auto requires a USB cord, but is also standard.

The 2021 Nissan Armada is not an all-new vehicle, instead riding on the same Nissan Patrol platform that has been its backbone since 2017. Interestingly, where pre-2017 Armadas rode on a variant of the Titan pickup truck chassis, Nissan’s luxury-focused sibling Infiniti has used the Patrol platform for their QX56 (now QX80) starting in 2010.

2021 Nissan Armada interior

While the drivetrain in the 2021 Nissan Armada is largely the “ol’ faithful” 5.6 liter Endurance V8 and seven-speed automatic transmission, Nissan has pulled another 10 horsepower and 19 lb-ft of torque out of their hat for 2021. Every 2021 Armada produces 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque – healthy numbers for a naturally-aspirated V8.

Nissan has also made a suite of driver assistance technology standard on every Armada for 2021, which they’re calling SafetyShield 360. The tech is comprehensive, with automatic emergency braking, radar-guided cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. Much like Toyota’s Sequoia, though, the Armada cannot keep you in your lane. It can only let you know when you are leaving it. Lane keeping or lane centering would be nice, but is likely incompatible with the Armada’s hydraulic (not electric) power steering.

Suspension and towing capacity are the same for every Armada, a welcome sight compared to so many trucks and SUVs that require an exacting combination of packages to get to the advertised tow rating. No, every 2021 Armada is rated to tow 8,500 pounds with an 850 pound tongue weight. Suspension is fully independent, with standard self-leveling rear airbags. Your only real choice here is how many driven wheels you desire – two-wheel drive is standard, with an automatic four-wheel drive system optional on every trim.

MSRP of my fully-loaded 2021 Nissan Armada Platinum came to $71,250.

Towing With the 2021 Nissan Armada

Big SUVs are popular in racetrack paddocks, for buyers who need to tow but prefer the “big lockable box” concept instead of a pickup truck’s open bed. For those moving families and friends, a third row seat adds to the versatility. So then, it’s important to see how Nissan’s 2021 Armada handles a trailer.

Given the Armada’s hefty towing capacity of 8,500 pounds, I grabbed my enclosed trailer and plopped it (carefully) on the hitch.

Every 2021 Nisan Armada – regardless of drive wheels or trim level – has that same 8,500 pound rating and is approved for up to 850 pounds of tongue weight. Self-leveling rear suspension is standard across the board, as is a trailer brake controller integrated at the bottom of the center stack. If you’ve used a Tekonsha Prodigy P2, you’ll find the controller oddly familiar – the Armada’s owners’ manual freely admits that it’s a P2 they built in to the dash. My Armada Platinum was also equipped with Nissan’s optional Trailer Sway Control.

Payload is always a concern, moreso with SUVs. Can you truly have a bunch of tongue weight and fill your seats with passengers? Nissan excels with Armada’s payload, with the base two-wheel drive SV offering a stated 1,634 pound payload. My heavier, loaded-up 4WD Platinum still carried a rating of over 1,400 pounds, according to the doorjamb sticker. Assuming my trailer consumed all of the 850 pound tongue weight – which it doesn’t – I’d still have 600 pounds or so remaining for people and things inside the Armada.

2021 Nissan Armada enclosed trailer

I first tried my trailer without weight distribution, as its total tongue weight is about 650 pounds. The Armada was doing its best, but the rear axle was clearly a bit overwhelmed. Being based on the Patrol, a truck used around the world for off-roading, has its downsides. Loaded or unloaded, the Armada is soft – especially in the rear. Highway speeds with this setup were relatively uncomfortable.

Hooking up weight distribution made a world of difference. With some tongue weight shifted toward the front axle, as is appropriate when towing over half of a vehicle’s stated capacity, the whole rig was level and body motion was much better controlled. The soft rear suspension still allowed some “porpoising” front-to-back over road undulations, but the Armada otherwise felt very stable. Its 121.9″ wheelbase is long enough to keep the trailer in line when things get windy or as a semi-truck passes.

Interestingly, while I could hear the air suspension’s compressor running after I hooked up my trailer (on two separate events), the rear suspension did not raise as high as I expected. Self-leveling is no substitute for weight distribution, but I’ve seen it make more of a visual difference on other vehicles.

2021 Nissan Armada brake controller

Nissan’s slow-in-the-city steering was actually a perk while towing, working with the short(ish) overall length to make the Armada feel exceptionally maneuverable on back roads and in parking lots. Power and torque were ample, though as with any naturally-aspirated engine, you have to really wind it out at times. Peak power comes at 5,200 rpm. Braking was similarly strong, thanks to the Tekonsha trailer brake controller and Nissan’s well-programmed downshifts in Tow Mode.

My 20′ enclosed trailer is the biggest enclosed I’d feel comfortable hooking up to the Armada, as the soft suspension ultimately works against you as you add length to the “sail in the wind” that is an enclosed. Open trailers should pose no issues, regardless of length, and I suspect boats would feel a bit more stable as well, given they don’t catch the wind quite so much compared to an enclosed car trailer.

Are Nissan’s Updates to the 2021 Armada Enough?

I’ll admit, I am one of the people who felt like Nissan wasn’t doing enough to stay current for a while. I learned to drive in a vehicle that was built during “peak Nissan” – the Infiniti variant of Nissan’s 2002 Maxima sports sedan. Nissan was doing a lot of fresh, interesting things in the early aughts, and I just couldn’t get excited about much that followed for a few generations.

Nissan’s updates to the 2021 Armada are a solid start. They’re focusing more elsewhere right now, which is important. The Armada isn’t Nissan’s volume seller, though it is an important part of their lineup regardless. And to that effect, it has been modernized enough to feel appropriate in a 2021 Nissan showroom. Nissan improved – greatly – the center stack and infotainment, and added important driver assistance tech that many of us expect by now. Their updated logo, which some have derided as “an expensive marketing effort,” helps modernize the truck’s looks, although I couldn’t help but notice the outgoing Nissan logo on the engine cover when I popped the hood.

2021 Nissan Armada Endurance V8 engine

The 2021 Nissan Armada still feels a bit old-school at heart, with its big naturally-aspirated V8, heavy hydraulic steering, and ruched leather on the door panels and seats. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily. Domestic competitors – think Tahoe and Expedition – absolutely feel more modern in some ways, but there’s also only so much to be done with a body-on-frame SUV. Nissan has leapt substantially ahead of Toyota’s (ancient) Sequoia here, and provides a solid offering in the market otherwise.

We’ll likely have to wait for the globally-sold Patrol to evolve before we see the third-generation Armada, but in the meantime, the 2021 updates do a lot to bring the Armada into a more modern space.

2021 Nissan Armada

Final Thoughts

Most buyers of a three-row body-on-frame SUV would truly be better off with a unibody variant, like Nissan’s Pathfinder. But for those who have honest semi-heavy towing needs, these big truck-based SUVs fill a very specific niche. I appreciate the styling tweaks and technology improvements that Nissan has made to the 2021 Armada, and the simplicity of trim level to tow rating is incredibly refreshing.

The 2021 Nissan Armada tows well enough, though its Patrol roots shine through. I wish it were stiffer, either with adjustable dampers or higher spring rates. It’s absolutely safe and more than adequate for towing an enclosed trailer, but that extra smidge of body control would kick its capability up toward the top of the class.

There is no air suspension on the Armada.

Hey Doug, not sure where you’re getting that info but our 2021 Armada definitely had rear airbags, as have prior Armadas and as do the 2022 models:

Understanding Towing Capacity: What It Is and Why It Matters

When it comes to buying a new car, many people look for features like horsepower, fuel efficiency, and storage capacity. But if you’re planning on towing anything, one of the most important things to consider is the car’s towing capacity.

This is the maximum weight that a vehicle can safely tow without damaging the car or compromising your safety on the road. Despite its importance, many car buyers don’t understand towing capacity or how it’s calculated.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what towing capacity is, why it matters, and how it’s determined. We’ll also explore some of the factors that affect towing capacity in the Nissan Armada, a popular SUV known for its towing capabilities.

What is Towing Capacity and Why Does it Matter? Towing capacity refers to the weight that a vehicle can safely tow behind it, whether that’s a trailer, boat, or another vehicle.

Understanding towing capacity is important for several reasons. First and foremost, towing a load that’s too heavy for your car can put stress on the transmission, engine, and other parts of the vehicle, leading to damage and repairs that can be costly.

Additionally, towing a load that’s too heavy can make it difficult to control the vehicle on the road, increasing the risk of accidents and endangering other drivers. Towing capacity also matters because it affects the kind of vehicle you can buy and the types of jobs or activities you can do with it.

If you plan on towing heavy loads frequently, you’ll need to look for a car or truck with high towing capacity. On the other hand, if you don’t plan on towing often, you may be able to prioritize other features like fuel efficiency, comfort, and storage space.

How is Towing Capacity Determined? Now that we understand what towing capacity is and why it’s important, let’s take a closer look at how it’s determined.

To calculate towing capacity, car manufacturers use several factors, including the vehicle’s engine power, transmission, brakes, suspension, and frame strength. They also consider the type of trailer hitch or towing equipment that’s installed on the vehicle.

The towing capacity is typically listed in the car’s owner’s manual or on the manufacturer’s website, and it’s important to note that exceeding this weight limit can void the car’s warranty. One thing to keep in mind is that towing capacity isn’t a one-size-fits-all number.

It varies depending on the vehicle model, year, and trim level, as well as the type of towing equipment that’s installed. Additionally, towing capacity can be affected by a number of external factors, such as the weight of the cargo you’re towing, the weather and road conditions, and the incline of the terrain you’re driving on.

Factors That Affect Towing Capacity in the Nissan Armada

Now that we understand the basics of towing capacity, let’s take a closer look at how it applies to the Nissan Armada. The Armada is a full-size SUV that’s known for its powerful engine and spacious interior, making it a popular choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts who need to tow heavy loads.

The 2021 Nissan Armada has a maximum towing capacity of up to 8,500 pounds when properly equipped. However, this number can vary depending on several factors, including:

Trim Level: The Armada is available in several trim levels, each with different features and towing capabilities. The Platinum and Platinum Reserve trims come with a standard towing package that includes a trailer brake controller and tow hitch receiver, allowing you to tow up to 8,500 pounds.

However, the SV and SL trims don’t come with this package and have a lower towing capacity of 8,300 pounds. 2.

Engine: The Armada comes with a V8 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. This powerful engine allows the Armada to tow heavy loads, but it’s important to note that towing capacity can be affected by engine wear, age, and maintenance.

3. Cargo and Passenger Weight: When calculating towing capacity, car manufacturers assume that the car will only be carrying a certain amount of weight, including the driver, passengers, and cargo.

If you’re towing a heavy load, you’ll need to factor in the weight of the cargo you’re carrying in the car, as well as the weight of any passengers. 4.

Terrain and Weather Conditions: Towing capacity can also be affected by the terrain and weather conditions you’re driving in. For example, towing uphill or in high winds can put more strain on your car and decrease towing capacity.

5. Towing Equipment: The type of towing equipment you use can also affect towing capacity.

For example, a weight-distributing hitch can help distribute the weight more evenly across the car, making it easier to tow heavier loads. In conclusion, understanding towing capacity is essential for anyone who plans on towing with their vehicle.

It’s important to know your car’s towing capacity and the factors that can affect it, such as engine power, cargo weight, and terrain conditions. By doing so, you can ensure that you’re towing safely and efficiently, without putting your car or others on the road at risk.

If you’re considering a Nissan Armada, be sure to research the towing capacity of the different trim levels and factors that can affect it, so you can choose the right car for your needs.

By following safe towing practices, you can prevent accidents, increase the longevity of your vehicle and cargo, and ensure the safety of yourself and other drivers on the road.

Here are some safe towing practices to follow with the Nissan Armada:

1. Check Your Vehicle Ratings

Before you begin towing, it’s essential to understand your vehicle’s maximum towing capacity and any other limits or ratings, such as tongue weight and gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).

These ratings are usually listed in the owner’s manual or on a sticker in the driver’s side door jamb. Exceeding the recommended ratings can cause serious damage to your vehicle and put you and other drivers at risk.

2. Check Your Towing Equipment

Make sure your towing equipment, such as the tow hitch, wiring harness, and trailer brakes, is rated for the weight of the towed load.

Inspect the equipment regularly and replace any worn or damaged parts. Make sure that the hitch is securely attached to the frame of the vehicle and that safety chains are properly installed.

3. Distribute the Weight Properly

Improper weight distribution can cause swaying or instability while towing.

To prevent this, ensure that the heaviest part of the load is placed over the trailer axle(s) and that roughly 60% of the load’s weight is in front of the trailer axle(s). This will help maintain balance and stability while towing.

4. Drive Defensively

Driving defensively is critical when towing with the Nissan Armada.

The extra weight behind your vehicle affects your stopping distance, visibility, and maneuverability, so it’s essential to be aware of your surroundings and anticipate potential hazards. Avoid sudden stops or swerves, and maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles.

5. Use Proper Braking Techniques

Braking when towing a heavy load requires different techniques than driving without a trailer.

When braking, do so gradually and earlier than you would without a trailer. Use the trailer brakes if possible, rather than relying solely on your vehicle’s brakes.

Additionally, use the transmission to downshift before descending hills to prevent overheating or brake fade.

Choosing the right trailer hitch is crucial when preparing to tow with your Nissan Armada. The trailer hitch is the connection point between your vehicle and the trailer, so it’s essential to select one that is compatible with your Armada’s towing capacity and towing needs.

Here’s a guide on how to choose the right trailer hitch for your Armada:

1. Determine Your Towing Needs

Before selecting a trailer hitch, it’s important to consider your towing needs.

Ask yourself questions like what you plan to tow, how often you plan to tow, and the weight of the load you’ll be towing. This will help determine the towing capacity required for your trailer hitch.

2. Understand Hitch Classes

Trailer hitches are categorized into different classes based on their towing capacities.

There are five main classes: Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Class 4, and Class 5. Each class has its own weight ratings, and it’s essential to choose a hitch class that aligns with your Armada’s towing capacity.

For example, if your Armada has a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds, a Class 3 hitch with a similar rating would be suitable. 3.

Consider Receiver Size

Trailer hitches come in different receiver sizes. The most common sizes are 1.25 inches and 2 inches.

It’s important to select a hitch with a receiver size that matches the size of the hitch mount on your trailer. Most trailers use a 2-inch hitch, but some smaller trailers may require a 1.25-inch hitch.

Ensure the receiver size is appropriate for your specific towing needs. 4.

Research Manufacturers and Models

Once you have an idea of the class and receiver size you need, research different manufacturers and models of trailer hitches. Look for reputable brands that offer high-quality and reliable products.

Read customer reviews to gain insight into the performance and durability of the hitches. Additionally, check if the manufacturer offers any warranty or additional features, such as corrosion resistance.

5. Consider Additional Features

Depending on your towing needs, you may want to consider additional features for convenience and safety.

Some trailer hitches have built-in electrical connectors, making it easier to connect the trailer’s lights. Others may have sway control features or integrated trailer brakes.

Assess which features are important to you and choose a trailer hitch that includes them, if necessary.

The Importance of Proper Weight Distribution When Towing

Proper weight distribution is crucial when towing to ensure stability, control, and safe handling of both the towing vehicle and the trailer. Improper weight distribution can lead to increased sway, decreased traction, and difficulty maneuvering, potentially causing accidents.

Here’s why proper weight distribution is vital when towing:

1. Stability and Control

Proper weight distribution helps maintain stability and control while towing.

When the majority of the weight is centered over the axles of the towing vehicle and the trailer, the forces acting on them are evenly distributed. This reduces the chances of swaying or fishtailing and allows for more predictable handling on the road.

2. Proper Braking

Weight distribution affects braking performance when towing.

When weight is distributed evenly between the towing vehicle and the trailer, braking forces are distributed more evenly as well. This results in improved braking efficiency and reduced stopping distances.

If too much weight is placed on the trailer, it can lead to excessive strain on the towing vehicle’s brakes and potentially cause brake fade or failure. 3.

Reduced Wear and Tear

Proper weight distribution minimizes stress on the towing vehicle, trailer, and their respective components. Distributing the weight correctly helps prevent excessive strain on the suspension, tires, axles, and frame of both the towing vehicle and the trailer.

This reduces the likelihood of mechanical failures, improves the longevity of the vehicles, and helps prevent unnecessary repairs. 4.

Improved Fuel Efficiency

When weight is distributed properly, the towing vehicle experiences less resistance, resulting in improved fuel efficiency. An incorrectly loaded trailer can create drag and increase wind resistance, making the engine work harder and decreasing fuel economy.

5. Enhanced Overall Safety

Proper weight distribution contributes to overall safety, not only for the driver and passengers of the towing vehicle but also for other road users.

By maintaining stable and predictable handling, reducing stopping distances, and minimizing the risk of accidents caused by swaying or fishtailing, proper weight distribution ensures safety for everyone on the road. In conclusion, selecting the right trailer hitch for your Nissan Armada and maintaining proper weight distribution are key elements in safe towing.

Consider your towing needs, understand hitch classes, and research reputable manufacturers to choose a suitable trailer hitch. Additionally, ensure proper weight distribution to enhance stability, control, braking performance, and overall safety while towing.

By following these practices, you can have a safe and enjoyable towing experience with your Armada.

If your trailer is equipped with brakes, use the trailer brakes in conjunction with the Armada’s brakes to aid in stopping.

The Impact of Towing on Gas Mileage in the Armada

Towing heavy loads can have a significant impact on the gas mileage of the Nissan Armada. The added weight and increased aerodynamic drag can cause the engine to work harder and consume more fuel.

Here are some factors to consider when it comes to gas mileage while towing with the Armada:

1. Weight of the Load

The weight of the load being towed directly impacts the gas mileage of the Armada.

The heavier the load, the more energy the engine needs to exert to move the vehicle and trailer, resulting in higher fuel consumption. Keep this in mind when loading your trailer and aim to tow only what is necessary.

2. Driving Habits

Aggressive driving habits, such as rapid acceleration and excessive speeding, can significantly decrease gas mileage while towing.

Maintain a steady speed, avoid sudden acceleration or hard braking, and keep a consistent pace. Smooth driving techniques can help optimize fuel efficiency and reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.

3. Aerodynamic Resistance

Towing a trailer creates increased aerodynamic resistance, which can negatively impact gas mileage.

The Armada’s large size and towing capacity already create some drag, but adding a trailer further increases resistance. Consider using aerodynamic accessories, such as streamlined trailer attachments or trailer skirts, to minimize airflow disruption and improve fuel efficiency.

4. Tire Pressure and Maintenance

Proper tire maintenance is crucial for optimal gas mileage, especially when towing.

Ensure that the Armada’s tires are properly inflated to the recommended pressure, as underinflated tires can decrease fuel efficiency. Regularly check tire pressure and tread wear and keep the tires in good condition for optimal performance while towing.

5. Terrain and Driving Conditions

The type of terrain and driving conditions can impact gas mileage while towing.

Driving uphill, against headwinds, or in challenging terrain requires the engine to work harder, resulting in higher fuel consumption. Plan your route accordingly, considering the terrain and potential challenges that may impact fuel efficiency.

Adjust your driving technique to compensate for these conditions. In conclusion, towing heavy loads with the Nissan Armada requires careful consideration and application of various tips and techniques.

Proper weight distribution, maintenance, and utilization of towing features are crucial for safe towing. Additionally, be prepared for the impact towing has on gas mileage in the Armada.

Monitor fuel consumption, adjust driving habits, and consider the size and weight of the load to optimize fuel efficiency while towing. By following these guidelines, you can have a successful and fuel-efficient towing experience with your Armada.

Tips for Maintaining Your Armada’s Towing Performance

To ensure that your Nissan Armada continues to perform well while towing, it’s important to properly maintain and care for your vehicle. Regular maintenance and adherence to recommended guidelines can help keep your Armada in peak towing condition.

Here are some tips for maintaining your Armada’s towing performance:

1. Follow the Manufacturer’s Recommendations

Always refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations outlined in the owner’s manual for maintenance intervals and procedures.

This includes regular oil changes, fluid checks, and filter replacements. Sticking to these guidelines will help keep your Armada’s engine, transmission, and other critical components in good working order.

2. Monitor Fluid Levels

Check the fluid levels regularly, including engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and brake fluid, as these are critical for the smooth operation of your vehicle while towing.

Ensure that the fluids are at the proper levels and that there are no leaks. Low or dirty fluids can result in decreased performance and potential damage to the engine or transmission.

3. Inspect and Maintain the Cooling System

Towing heavy loads can put additional stress on the Armada’s cooling system.

Regularly inspect the radiator, hoses, and coolant levels to ensure they are functioning properly. Consider installing an aftermarket transmission cooler if you frequently tow heavy loads, as it can

But which SUV is the best SUV for hauling a towable travel trailer? To answer this question we took a look at full and mid-sized SUVs to help narrow down your options to the very best choices. What is the best SUV for a towable travel trailer? The best SUVs in order of towing capacity are:

Mid-Size SUV

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee – 6,500 lbs.
  • Ford Explorer – 6,200 lbs.
  • Nissan Pathfinder – 6,000 lbs.
  • Toyota 4Runner – 5,000 lbs.
  • Hyundai Santa Fe SE – 3,500 lbs.

Full-Size SUV

  • Ford Expedition – 9,300 lbs.
  • Chevrolet Tahoe – 8,600 lbs.
  • Nissan Armada – 8,500 lbs.
  • GMC Yukon – 8,500 lbs.
  • Chevrolet Suburban – 8,300 lbs.
  • Toyota Sequoia – 7,400 lbs.

The Best Full-Sized SUVs for Towing a Travel Trailer

Towing a travel trailer with an SUV has become a common choice. A full-size SUV makes a great all-purpose family vehicle, and it can pull a good-sized travel trailer when you do take to the open road. A full-sized SUV will have a towing capacity of between 7,000 and 8,000 lbs. However, it is essential to understand that this does not mean you can buy a camper that weighs 7,500 lbs. and head out cross-country with it.

There are two critical points to understand about towing capacity. The manufacturers rated towing capacity is the maximum your vehicle can safely tow under optimal conditions. You will want to include a margin of safety between the SUV’s towing capacity and the total trailer weight. Your travel trailer’s declared weight is its “dry weight,” meaning all tanks are empty. It does not consider the added weight of a proper hitch and all your gear.

For example, full water and propane tanks will add several hundred pounds to your travel trailer’s total weight. The weight of your gear can add a great deal – anywhere between 1,000 and 2,000 lbs. The key is to remember that whatever you put in the trailer adds to its weight and your tow vehicle must safely handle it.

Even considering all this, you should easily be able to find a full-sized SUV rated to pull a travel trailer with the capacity to sleep four people and a total weight of 6,000 lbs. This total weight will meet the top recommended towing capacity for most full-sized SUVs with a comfortable margin of safety. We will look at six full-sized SUVs in a moment.

Can You Use Mid-Sized SUVs to Tow a Travel Trailer?

If you choose to, you can certainly tow a camper with smaller SUVs. The same guidelines will apply. You will have to pick a smaller trailer based on that vehicles recommended towing capacity and the margin of safety you still need to maintain. Mid-sized SUVs do vary a great deal in towing capacity. Below are a few sample towing capacities for popular models:

As you can see, depending on the make and model, the towing capacities do vary significantly. And, the larger mid-sized SUVs do approach the towing capacity of full-sized SUVs. A Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, or Jeep Grand Cherokee could safely tow a travel trailer with a rated dry weight of up to 4,500 or possibly 5,000 lbs. and still maintain a satisfactory safety margin.

However, there is one more thing to consider. The size of the towing vehicle does matter. Towing a full-size travel trailer with a mid-sized SUV can create a dangerous situation, especially in a case involving emergency breaking or high winds. To ensure the safest and most stable towing conditions, considered it a best practice to use a full-sized SUV to tow a full-sized travel trailer.

Choosing the Best Full-Sized SUV

Now that you understand some of the basics, let’s look at six of the popular full-sized SUVs and see what they can do.

1. Ford Expedition Boasting a towing capacity of 9,300 lbs., the Expedition has some serious towing muscle. If you are looking for the best full-sized SUV to tow a travel trailer, you need to look no further. The 2018 Ford Expedition produces a massive 365 horsepower from a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, generating an impressive 470 lb.-ft. of torque. The Expedition’s Blind-Spot Information System (BLIS) alerts the driver whenever the system detects a vehicle within your blind spot or alongside your trailer. This safety feature can be beneficial in towing situations.

2. Chevrolet Tahoe With a towing capacity of 8,600 lbs., the Chevrolet Tahoe comes in at a secure second place. Its 355-horsepower V8 has plenty of power to get you up and over those distant mountain tops. Also, the Tahoe comes loaded with amenities to keep your passengers comfortable and entertained on even the longest rides.

3. Nissan Armada The Armada offers an impressive towing capacity of 8,500 lbs. while being the lowest-cost full-sized SUV. It features an independent rear suspension and a full-length box frame for increased rigidity, as well as being the most powerful in its class for horsepower – generating 390HP from its 5.6-liter V8 engine. You will experience a decent fuel economy with enhanced throttle response, and with its Tow/Haul mode, it is ideal for towing your travel trailer as you set off on your latest adventure.

4. GMC Yukon The GMC Yukon matches the Armada’s 8,500 lbs. towing capacity. Every Yukon comes with a standard heavy-duty towing package that includes a hitch platform as well as a 7-wire harness equipped with independent trailering circuits. This is paired with a 2″ trailering receiver and a 7-way sealed connector. Due to the difference in wheelbase, the Yukon XL does come with a slightly lower towing capacity of 8,300 lbs.

5. Chevrolet Suburban Another popular choice is the Chevrolet Suburban with a towing capacity of 8,300 lbs. It is powered by the same 355-horsepower engine generating 383 lb.-ft. torque found in the Tahoe. The Suburban offers a significant number of extra features including many USB ports for charging phones and other devices. It also comes with a larger screen TV in both the second and third-row seats; with HDMI ports to connect to your favorite devices. Finally, there is an option for 4G LTE Wi-Fi (also available in the Tahoe) to connect to the internet whenever coverage is available.

6. Toyota Sequoia Offering a towing capacity of 7,400 lbs., the Sequoia is no slouch when it comes to pulling the family camper to the lake or cross-country. While slightly lower in towing capacity, the Sequoia takes horsepower to the next level, generating 381HP from its 5.7-liter V8. The multi-mode 4WD system is a very nice feature. The Sequoia offers a roomy interior with real 8-person seating, and passengers in the third row will love the reclining seats. There is also a multi-function center console giving your passengers all the entertainment they need on those long drives.

Is a V8 Better Than a V6 for Towing an SUV?

Many look at the power and torque of the new turbocharged V6 engines and are immediately won over. Others still think that the V8 is the better engine for towing. Because of the recent advances in turbocharged V6 engines, the question of which is better is not as easy to answer as it was a few years ago.

For instance, Ford’s twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 is rated to tow up to 11,300 lbs. while their 5.0-liter V8 can’t tow 10,000 lbs. Ford’s powerful 6.2-liter V8 which generates 411HP and 434 lb.-ft. of torque can only match the EcoBoost V6. The turbocharged V6 is an excellent choice for the buyer focused on fuel economy, city driving, and light-duty use with occasional heavy-duty towing such as the family summer vacation.

If you tow your travel trailer regularly, for example taking grand tours around the country, the V8 is probably the better choice, especially if the SUV you are considering does not come with a turbocharged V6 option.

How to Calculate Your Travel Trailer’s Weight

When choosing the best SUV to tow your travel trailer, one of the vital safety factors is knowing the actual gross weight of the load you are expecting your SUV to pull safely. Remember that your SUV’s tow rating is the maximum it can safely tow under ideal conditions and that the weight of your travel trailer is the dry weight. The actual load you will be pulling can be much more substantial.

Every towing vehicle and trailer will have its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). The GVWR is the maximum legally allowed weight of the vehicle and all its contents, passengers, and cargo. Be aware that you can easily add 1000 to 2000 lbs. of extra cargo before towing your trailer. Let’s look and see how this can quickly add up.

Your water tank might hold between 50 and 100 gallons of fresh water. At 8 lbs. per gallon, that adds 400 to 800 extra pounds alone. Typically, you can add another 150 to 300 lbs. for miscellaneous canned goods, pantry items, and all the perishable food packed into your refrigerator. You can add another 100 to 200 lbs. for clothing and linens.

Last, add all the folding chairs, the grill, charcoal, needed tools, a folding table, lights, and water and sewage hoses and connectors. These items can quickly add up to another 250 to 500 lbs. These items listed could add over 1,500 pounds to the dry weight of a travel trailer.

The SUV you choose to tow your travel trailer must be able to handle this total trailer weight and still provide a margin of safety to compensate for any less than “optimal conditions” you might encounter. And, the total weight of your trailer and gear cannot exceed the GVWR for the vehicle.

Calculating Tongue Weight

It is also a good idea to mention another factor called tongue weight. Tongue weight is the downward force of the tongue of the trailer measured at the hitch of the towing vehicle. A safe tongue weight for any travel trailer is somewhere between 9 and 15 percent of the gross trailer weight.

For example, if you are pulling a camper with a total weight of 6,000 lbs., the tongue weight should be between 585 and 910 lbs. Tongue weight is another critical factor in safe towing. The key to tongue weight is to ensure the load added to your travel trailer is properly balanced. Etrailer.com has a detailed article on how to determine your tongue weight if you want to learn more.

I would recommend the Ford Explorer. It’s a great SUV to tow a travel trailer.

Thanks Joe!

I am just starting g my search on a trailer and vehicle. Your article was one of the best I have read. Well written for the novice and informative. Thank you.

Hi Deborah! Thank so much! Glad you found the article to be helpful! Mike

We purchased a 2015 Dodge Durango R/T to tow our 2019 Winnebago Minnie 2401RG. Dry tow weight on the Minnie is 5200 lbs. The towing capacity on the Durango R/T is 7200 lbs. We added sway bars and a break controller and good to go. We really like the Durango because it’s a lot of power in a small/mid-size SUV that handles extremely well when towing, or detached from the trailer to go exploring from our base camp.

Hi Kathleen, Thanks for sharing your info about towing your trailer with your Dodge Durango! Mike

Nissan Armada Towing Capacity by Year (2004-2023)

The Nissan Armada was introduced into Nissan’s lineup as a full-size SUV in 2004 and remains available through the present. The Armada is known for its performance and for having the features consumers expect from today’s SUVs, including towing. But what is the towing capacity of a Nissan Armada?

The Nissan Armada has a towing capacity of up to 9,100 pounds depending on the year, if it is 2WD or 4WD, and if it has a tow package installed.

There’s a bit more to know about Nissan Armada towing capabilities which we’ll cover in today’s guide.

Nissan Armada Towing Capacity By Year

what is the towing capacity of a nissan armada

The 2023 Nissan Armada can tow 8,500 pounds across all trim levels.

The Armada has been in production from 2004 through the present, with the exception of the 2016 model year.. We’ve listed out the maximum tow capacity by year below for reference.

Note that for each model year, there are many variables that affect the total towing capability of each vehicle year, so we recommend checking your specific Armada year and trim level in the links below for an in-depth guide and to get the most accurate information for that year.

Here’s the maximum Nissan Armada towing capacity by year:

Here’s a video showing the Nissan Armada being put to a real-world road test:

Nissan Armada Braked Vs. Unbraked Towing Capacity

All vehicles have different towing capacities based on whether or not you’re towing a trailer that has trailer brakes installed.

Trailer brakes allow the trailer to stop faster than if only the vehicle is using its brakes, allowing the vehicle to tow more weight, so braked towing capacity will always be higher than unbraked towing capacity.

Nissan Armada Braked Towing Capacity: Up to 8,500 lbs.

Nissan Armada Unbraked Towing Capacity: 1,500 lbs.

Nissan Armada Towing Capacity Factors

There are a few factors that affect the Nissan Armada tow capacity.

The Armada’s tow capability varied a bit by year and generation.

The early model years had a max towing capability of 9,100 pounds which decreased to 8,500 pounds in later years.

The axle type (whether it was 2WD or 4WD) also played a role in determining the Nissan Armada’s towing capability.

For some years, the 2WD model could tow less than the 4WD, while other years it was the opposite.

Towing Package

For the majority of Nissan Armada model years, you could only achieve the max towing of 8,500 to 9,100 pounds if you had a Trailer Towing package installed.

If you don’t have that trailer towing package installed, your Armada was limited to towing up to 6,500 pounds.

Number of Passengers

A big factor in calculating your vehicle’s towing capacity is how many passengers you’re carrying, which directly calculates into the vehicle’s GCWR.

This is true of all vehicles, not just the Nissan Armada, so always take into consideration the total load of your passengers and gear in addition to what you’re towing.

Nissan Armada Engine Specs

There is only one engine option for the most recent generation Nissan Armada.

Nissan Armada 5.6L V8 Engine

The Nissan Armada engine is a 5.6 Liter V8 32-valve DOHC direct fuel injection engine paired with a seven-speed transmission.

This engine produces 400 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft of torque.

Nissan Armada Tow Package Info

2017 Nissan Armada

Does The Nissan Armada Have A Tow Package?

Nissan offers two factory-installed tow hitches for the Armada.

The base option is a Class III trailer hitch, which Nissan recommends if you plan on towing under 5,000 pounds with your Armada.

If you plan on towing over 5,000 pounds with your Armada, Nissan also offers and recommends a Class IV weight distribution hitch.

Can You Install A Trailer Hitch On a Nissan Armada?

rear facing view of nissan armada

If you plan on towing anything with your Nissan Armada, you’ll need a tow hitch and wiring harness.

Depending on what you’re towing, you’re going to need a ball mount (aka a trailer ball hitch) so you can attach items for towing.

Make sure to get the right trailer ball size that matches your hitch and trailer.

Nissan Armada Tow Hitch

Trailer hitches come in different hitch classes , which are rated for different vehicle sizes and weight limits.

The Nissan Armada uses a Class 3 hitch.

Here’s a great option for a Class III Nissan Armada trailer hitch :

Nissan Armada Trailer Hitch Installation

Always follow the manufacturer’s directions and use proper safety precautions.

Here’s a great video walkthrough on a Nissan Armada trailer hitch installation:

Nissan Armada Trailer Hitch Installation Cost

If you’re considering having a tow hitch added to your Armada, expect to pay between $100 and $200 to have a tow package professionally installed (excluding the cost of the tow hitch and wiring harness).

If you’re handy and looking to save money, you can install the trailer hitch and wiring harness yourself.

Hitch Receiver Vs Rear Step Bumper Towing

Some vehicles allow for bumper towing, which means you can mount a tow hitch ball directly on the bumper instead of installing a tow hitch to the vehicle’s frame.

Can I Bumper Tow With a Nissan Armada?

The Nissan Armada is not rated for bumper towing, so you’ll need to install a frame-mounted hitch like the one we listed earlier in this guide.

How Do I Know If My Nissan Armada Has A Tow Package?

Nissan Armada towing a travel trailer

You can start by looking under the rear bumper of your Armada to see if you notice a trailer hitch or trailer ball.

That will give you a good indication of if you have a tow hitch already installed on your Armada.

Another way to research this is by checking the paperwork that came with your vehicle or taking it to a local dealer to see what’s installed.

Make sure to have your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) handy if you call the dealer so they can look up the exact specs and whether or not your vehicle has any towing packages or features installed on it.

Data Accuracy

We’ve gathered all data represented here from the official Nissan Armada Owner’s Manuals on Nissan’s website and have checked all data thoroughly for accuracy.

Having said that, we still recommend you refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual yourself before towing with your Nissan Armada.

The Nissan Armada Towing Capacity Resource (2021-2004)

The Nissan Armada Towing Capacity Resource (2021-2004)

The Nissan Armada is a larger SUV that has a substantial towing capacity tied to it but trying to find some of the information was hard and vague, for the most part, so I wanted to clarify the information for myself and figured it might come in handy for others as well.

The Armada was made from 2004-present and did have pretty consistent weight ratings, with a few changes over the years. I gathered the data for these SUVs and tried to lay it all out in an easy-to-read format. Hope it helps!

Overview of the Data For the Armada:

Engine Choices: There were no specific engines that were specified that directly affect the Armada's capacity numbers. In the data below, you will not find any information regarding the engine configurations because it was not a determining factor when it came to the trailer weight numbers.

Configurations: There were two different models offered over the years, which was offered as a 2WD or 4WD model. The maximum weight capacity didn't seem to be affected by either type of configuration and the specs were nearly identical for 2WD and 4WD models, except for model's made in 2015.

There was an 800 lb. maximum capacity difference for 2WD vs 4WD models made in 2015, according to Nissan's the chart.

Towing Capacity: The average towing capacity for the Nissan Armadas throughout the years (2004-2019) ranged from 6,500 lbs.-9,100 lbs. There were really two different specs listed for these vehicles, a lower range and a higher range and no really a "range" type of figure.

The lower end of the trailer weight ratings (6,500 lbs.) was stated for the model's that did not have a tow package installed and the higher end of the spectrum (8,200-9,100 lbs.) was for models that had a one installed.

Nissan requires the use of a weight distributing hitch for trailers weighing over 5,000 lbs. It would be wise to have a braking system too for heavier trailers like that too but doesn't seem to be a requirement.

2021-2017 Models:

All of the models had the same specs that were made from 2021-2017, as you can see from the graph below.

The maximum towing capacity for Nissan Armadas made from 2021-2017 was set at around 8,500 lbs., with a max. tongue weight of 850 lbs. and a GCWR of 14,450 lbs (2WD) to 14,700 lbs. (4WD), with the 2021 model years varying a bit on the GCWR specs.

2017-2020 Armada Image

2020-2017 Chart

Note, that there was not a chart/manual for the 2016 year of the Nissan Armada available. I assume this was because of a manufacturing change of some sort.

2015-2004 Models:

The 2003-2015 model's specs were pretty similar over the years with some changes to the capacity numbers (2015 model year) and the GCWR (2004 model year).

The maximum towing capacity for Nissan Armada's made from 2004-2015 ranged from 6,500 lbs. to 9,100 lbs.

2004-2016 Armada Image

There were actually two different figures and not so much of a range, consisting of a lower capacity of 6,500 lbs. for models without a tow package installed and around 9,000 lbs. for models equipped with one.

The models made from 2004-2014 had identical specs, the changes being for 2015 model years that had a smaller maximum capacity for the 2WD models and the 2004 model years that had a lower GCWR for 2WD and 4WD models.

Tongue Weight Specs:

For the Armada, the maximum tongue weight specifications we're locked in at the industry-standard of between 10% and 15% of the total trailer weight, which is normal to see when it comes to tongue weight specs. Here is the image I found in the manual that illustrates this point.

How Do I Know If I Have A Tow Package Installed?

There was not a specific answer that I could find to this that would lead me to believe that there was a definite "yes or no" answer. There were a lot of speculation online and even people stating that the Nissan Dealerships could not help answer the question either.

I do know that the manual did not state that there were specific upgrades made, like an upgraded radiator, alternator, towing hitch, etc. that you would find on other manufacturer's tow packages.

It seems all I could find is that if you did have a factory installed Nissan tow package on your vehicle, then it only consisted of a receiver hitch (frame mounted) and a 7 pin connector.

Here's what I found in one of the Armada's owner's manuals from 2013 (important parts are highlighted):

A Note On Trailer Brakes...

Since these Nissan SUVs at such high trailer weight capacity limits, I was sure there would be something in the owner's manual that talks about trailer brakes and sure enough I was able to find a little snippet that I took a screenshot of and posted below.

For this particular vehicle, Nissan recommends that your trailer have its own braking system if the trailer weight is going to be over 3,500 pounds.

Armada Trailer Brakes Warning

Break In Period...

If you are buying a new Armada, then it is important if you know about the specified break in period of the vehicle in order to prevent any premature damage from happening, especially when it comes to pulling a trailer. I was able to find this little note in the 2020 manual (image below) that does not recommend pulling a trailer find your vehicle for the first 500 miles.

When you are finally past that initial 500 miles on your new vehicle, you can then go ahead and pull a trailer, but there are separate recommendations for the first 500 "towing" miles.

There were two main recommendations made by Nissan when pulling a trailer for the first 500 miles and these are simply to not drive over 50 miles an hour and to be easy on the gas pedal when you are coming from a full stop. So in other words just baby your vehicle the first 500 miles when pulling a trailer behind it.

It's never a good time when you have to enlist the help of a tow service. My hubby and I unfortunately were part of a nearly 20 car pileup on I-70. STL had 50 degree temps one day and then the next, an unexpected snowstorm. Our vehicle struck the rear of an 18 wheeler and our air bags deployed. Thankfully, we weren't injured besides the fact of seeing our life pass by in slow motion and fearing the worst. And again thankfully, a duallie transporting a horse trailer jack knifed into himself to avoid hitting us from the rear. After several hours stranded on 70, a state trooper offered us to warm up in his SUV. Another tow company began retrieving our vehicle with the understanding we'd become his passengers. But guess what? He left us! The trooper was able to get Prime towing to 'tow two passengers' while the other company got our car. My hubby and I ended up in separate tow trucks. Both drivers (Gary and Jeff) were patient, understanding, nice and all around good guys. We rode around with them for about an hour avoiding pileups and backups. They finally dropped us off while we waited for our friend driving to get us. BTW, I think Gary is the owner. If you ever need tow services, and I hope that you don't, please don't hesitate to contact Prime. They live up to their name by offering prime service.

Great experience helped us out when we were stuck in the middle of the night and couldn't get our car dolly unstuck. Highly recommend!!

Towing with 2019 Armada

  • Add to quote

Having towed large fifth wheel trailers with heavy duty trucks and now owning a new Armada for lighter towing. The weak link in towing has always been the drive train of the tow vehicle, with automatic transmissions being the most problem. Over temperature will destroy the transmission, the warning light on most vehicles not adequate for towing (not knowing what Temp. the light on our Armada is set to come on). Temperatures in excess of 225 degrees will reduce the longevity of most transmissions. Prior to taking my first trip towing I installed the Fusion App. and Tonwon OBD2 products. Following the suggested break in towing information supplied by Nissan are the following results. With 600 miles on the Armada started towing at a speed of 50 MPH. as suggested in the manual for another 500 miles. Towing on mostly flat terrain for the first 200 miles then some grades of 2% to 3% for the next 300 miles. Transmission Temp. ran between 186 to 194 degrees with an outside temperature of 90 degrees, trailer weight loaded 4,700 lbs. with two passengers. Some towing in Tow mode, other times in normal mode. On flat long distances tried Tow Mode with cruise control. Fuel mileage averaged 10.4 as some of the trip was returning from the higher elevations. Having past tow vehicles using ATF as the lubrication, not knowing what is used in the Armada transmission, I plan to continue monitoring during towing. I will provided an update later this year after a 900 mile trip with some 4% to 7% grade towing. Trailer at that time will weight 5,500 lbs with some added weight to the vehicle. After completing my break in trip and reviewing some questions that came up. I would like to be able to know what gear the transmission is in when towing. The shifts are so slight, I find it hard to monitor the gear selection. I have contacted Fusion support and received an update on a possible method to add a gauge to my menu for displaying gear selection.. Will provide an update later.

towing travel trailer with nissan armada

My second gen Armada only tells me I am in D, for drive, and I'm accustomed to my old F-150 that indicated what gear I was actually in. The only work-around that I have come up with is to move the gear selector to the manual mode, then the indicator on the dashboard will change from D, to whatever gear you are in. I then move the gear selector back to the automatic mode.

I have towed many trailers cross country using heave duty trucks. Always knowing what gear the Tranny. is in helps in finding the sweet spot for towing. With our 2019 Armada I have added the Tonwon OBD adapter and the Fusion App, included the Enhanced add on for Nissan. I now can monitor the Tranny temperature on a smart phone, display what gear it is in. Will be doing some longer and heavier towing later this year, will provide an update then. Look up Fusion software Apps on You tube for information. Good luck.

At this time I have not determined if the TC locking is available Will take more research.

I have towed my 7600# airstream for 3 months last year and 3.5 months this year. I downshift when going downhill and stopping. I just keep it in the tow mode when towing.

Thank you for your interest in a new Nissan NV 4X4 Conversion offered here at Tim Dahle Nissan Southtowne.

We understand that there are other van conversions out there available. This information is to inform you of the similarities and differences between the NV vans and the competition.

The Competition

The Quigley system is an All-Wheel-Drive, all-the-time system. Meaning all 4 wheels are connected to the drivelines all the time. The transfer case can engage the power at any speed below 45mph on-demand, and Voila’, you have instant all-wheel traction. However, this system does NOT have a true 4X4 transfer case with lower gearing. Only one-speed range. So, your mileage will be affected, and you won’t have the low-speed off-road traction most 4X4 lovers want and need. It’s more like a BIG Crossover SUV.

The 4X4 System from Advanced 4WD Systems is a true 4X4 system with a two-speed transfer case. It uses parts sourced from many different brands that are combined. The Activator for the 4-wheel drive is an Old-Fashioned shifter that is cut into the transmission tunnel. It is located next to your right leg as you drive. You Pull the gear into 4-wheel High, or Low as you need. It works effectively enough but lacks the factory-installed look and feel of a Factory-Engineered System.

The Nissan NV-Vans share the same Chassis as the new body Titan XD truck. As a result, the parts we chose to use are factory-designed and engineered. For example: We use a factory-built two-speed transfer case that is made from aluminum, just like the motor block. Therefore, there are no problems with heat expansion gaps. Throughout the entire system, very few parts are not Factory. For example: Our new wire harness communicates with the factory CPU. This new harness has been designed in conjunction with Nissan’s Factory engineers, and is custom made for this application. While these components are not factory-created, they are in fact designed Nissan parts and made exclusively for the NV 4×4 Conversion.

The Activator Switch is the factory electronic one used in the Titan and Titan XD. It is mounted in the dash, right near the ignition exactly like it is in the Titan and Titan XD. You may switch into 4WD High at any speed below 60mph. You may choose to switch into 4X4 Low when the vehicle is at a stop. We also installed a 4X4 activity light in the factory gauge cluster. All of this has created a smooth operating system matching the look and feel of the Titan and Titan XD factory installed components. When the NV van is in 4-Wheel drive operation, it feels like you want it to. Creating a seamless perfect factory response.

We can install the system on a stock suspension, or you may choose from three other options all suited to your specific preference.

  • A front suspension level.
  • A 3″ front and rear lift kit that can accommodate a 33″ tall wheel and tire combo.
  • A new 6” lift that can handle a 35″ wheel and tire combo.

We stand by our work and are confident that no other post factory 4×4 conversion system measures up to that of a properly installed Factory-Worthy 4X4 Conversion that only Tim Dahle Nissan Southtowne installs and offers.

Simply put, our customers deserve the BEST!

If you have additional questions or would like more information, we have dedicated NV 4×4 Conversion professional in both Sales and Service who can answer any question you may have. Please feel free to call at 877-408-6261 for more information and availability.
