Javea, has a rich history that spans thousands of years. Would you believe human settlements in the area date back to around 30,000 BC? From the Iberians to the Romans, and later the Moors, this coastal town has seen the rise and fall of various cultures.
By the Middle Ages, Javea was part of the Kingdom of Valencia and became established as a burgh with a council and defined boundaries in 1397. However, the town experienced frequent pirate attacks during this time. To protect themselves, the residents moved inland and built walls and towers around the city — walls that stood until 1877.
While the town’s early economy primarily revolved around agriculture, with crops such as wheat, almonds, grapes, carob, and olives, it eventually shifted its focus towards trading due to the thriving port activities. The sale of raisins, for instance, proved quite lucrative.
Fast forward to the present, Javea has embraced the tourism industry as its main economic driver. From the construction of the state-owned luxury hotel in 1969 to the wide array of historical monuments, the town’s captivating history attracts visitors from around the world.
Historical Monuments:

- Chapel of Santa Ana: A small Gothic-style building that was part of the 14th-century hospital.

Ultimate Javea Tourist Guide: BEST Things to Do & See 2024
Table of Contents
Javea (also known as Xàbia) is a gem of a town situated on the Northern Costa Blanca.
It’s rugged coastline is indented with secluded coves and sandy beaches. These hidden caves and bays were once used by pirates and smugglers in the Middle Ages but are now used by sunbathers, snorklers and scuba divers.
Javea is situated on the most easterly point of mainland Spain about 100 kms from Valencia and 90 kms from Alicante. Options to getting to Javea are covered on our airport transfers page .
Javea has been voted environmentally near perfect by the World Health Organisation and boasts 320 days of sunshine a year.
New building developments in Javea are subject to height restrictions which mean there are no high-rise buildings unlike in other Costa Blanca towns such as Calpe or Benidorm .
The locals are proud to speak not the most common type of Spanish (Castellano) but Valencian (Valenciano) which is very similar but not the same as Catalan and this is spoken not just in Javea but in the whole Valencian region. This is why you see the local word for Javea which is Xàbia.
Many would argue Javea is the finest place on the whole Costa Blanca. We wouldn’t argue too strongly with this.
Javea, or Xabia as the locals call it, is split into three distinct areas.
Javea Old Town (Xabia Pueblo)
There is the Old Town of Javea where you can wander down ancient narrow streets and visit the local market on a Thursday. Built with original Tosca sandstone it’s rich in medieval history.
The Gothic fortified church of San Bartolome dominates the centre of Javea’s town. This building dates back to the 15th century. At the side of the church is a beautiful building which houses the indoor market where you can buy local fresh produce daily.
The Port of Javea (Xabia Puerto)
Many people’s favourite area of Javea this has a fascinating charm factor hard to define. Whitewashed houses surround the bay. Watch the fishermen bring in their fresh catches or watch the sailing boats set off from the marina. Eat at the fantastic seafood restaurants.
There are also many good shops, bars and cafes – it’s bustling with activity. The Port area of Javea has a real Spanish feel, this is an area where locals live and work in harmony with the tourist elements. It is a lively bustling area with many shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.
The landmark of the Port area is the church of Our Lady of Loreto with a roof which imitates the hull of a ship.
The Beach of Javea (Playa El Arenal)
The bustling Arenal area is basically the sandy blue flag beach which is surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants such as the renowned Los Remos or La Boheme.
During the evening in the summer there are various stalls here selling a variety of handmade crafts. Many of the bars have live music and there are several discotheques.
Try the Platino bar for entertainment such as Adam King singing live on most Saturdays.
The most popular bar is known as Champagne which has been renamed Jalousie.
Set off the beach is the popular Irish Bar An Shebeen.
The Arenal beach area is the place to enjoy the nightlife which although relatively quiet and limited does have it’s lively spots such as the nightclub Achill.
The Arenal is very good for families. The beach is large and very wide. The water is very shallow and calm as it is in a sheltered bay. You can easily sit in a cafe or bar and be able to see your children. Generally Spain is very family-orientated and you can feel much more relaxed about your kids safety than you would anywhere else.
This is the place where you can eat tapas, paella but also fish and chips and English breakfast. The great thing about Javea is the choice of the three very different parts. It’s almost like visiting a theme park and entering different worlds!
In the centre of these three areas are plenty of apartment blocks of which many are for rental. Surrounding Javea are beautiful green hills peppered with very expensive villas. These can make a great choice for a holiday if there are a few people. They can work out very cheap per person but you can spoil yourself as many of them are the definition of luxury – palm trees, swimming pools, entrance gates, jacuzzis etc.
Javea History
The streets in the old town of Javea are worth exploring with the fortified Gothic church (San Bartolome) and a very good museum (Museo Etnografico ‘Soler Blasco’) which explains the history of the coast from Palaeolithic times through Iberian, Roman and Medieval times.
In 1244, King Jamie claimed Javea back from the Moors. In the 14th century, King Jamie II built a further fortress and the town’s walls along the streets of Maria Gallard, Primicies, Major and Roques.
In the 15th century an economic recovery with an increase in population began. This improvement of wealth is reflected in building habits with many new streets built and the city gates constructed.
Javea’s population significantly increased and drew the attention of the Barbarians. As a consequence, fortresses and churches were built, including the church Eglesia de Sant Bertomeu (San Bartolome).
During the early 1500’s plague was prevalent in Javea and the town’s hospital was built. All that is now left of this hospital is the Capella de Santa Anna.
In the 18th century Javea participated in the succession war on the side of the Bourbon and gained a number of privileges. In addition to numerous honorary titles, Javea received permission to build a harbour from which it was able to export fruit to other countries. A trade which began with raisins and then extended to wheat, grapes, bread and olives.
From the second half of the 19th century onwards, the manufacturing process and export of raisins became the major industry.
What are the Miradors of Javea?
The miradors of Javea are 14 designated, strategic viewpoints that show spectacular views of Javea. The miradors of Javea are clearly signposted and each one has been carefully selected due to it’s amazing views. The concept is that each one represents an imaginary window through which you see the most fantastic views.
Javea’s miradors are all along the coastline of Javea and the first mirador is to the north of Javea at Cap San Antonio where the lighthouse is.
The miradors continue along the coastline to the 14th mirador to the south of Javea which is just around the corner from Javea’s Granadella beach.
There is no cost to view each mirador. The views from each mirador are easily amongst some of the very best views the Costa Blanca has to offer. You can have a great day’s adventure trying to find each one.
Below we have a photo of the mirador map at La Granadella.
Below we have a video showing La Granadella beach.
Population of Javea
Javea has a huge expat population, mainly English but also a substantial German contingent. Javea is a very cosmopolitan and a great place to move to or invest in and the expat population means there is a good opportunity to find a job in this part of Spain.
It is very much a place where you can feel you are in Spain but where you can feel reminders of home. There are many English and German supermarkets, lots of clubs and societies and people who speak your language.
Just outside of Javea and Benitachell. A relatively small 9 hole golf course. The two additional putting greens and the twenty bay driving range offer enough room to practice your golf swing.

I first went to javea in 1985 when my parents brought an apartment next to the tennis club. I continued going there for holidays for around 5 years and loved the un spoilt Spanish vibe the are had. My wife and I visited javea 5 years ago and we both absolutely loved the place even though it had trebled in size compared to the late 80s. In 2015 we brought our own 3 bed Casa 10 minutes walk from the Arenal, we spend most of our time in the port which has a real Spanish community feel about it. The restaurant are excellent with a great choice including Piri Piri on the front which is fantastic: we try to go at least 5 times a year and never get board or lost for things to do.

I lived in Jávea between October 1972 and February 1978; when my horrible father kicked me out of the so – called family home. In those days, they only had two discotheques, El Caracol, ( shaped like a snail ); and El Moli Blanc. Or as I refer to it, The White Windmill. The name of the second night club comes from the local dialect, Valenciano, spoken all across the Costa Blanca. As a young boy, growing up down there, this made it very difficult for me to fully comprehend what the locals were saying, even if they spoke in front of me in pure Spanish, ( Castellano ). It was only because of the lack of the dialect in the school there, that I was able to learn the language properly, and, despite having forgotten a few words, I can still hold a decent conversation in Spanish. Bars, restaurants, etc on the sea front were non existent in my day. There were a few, along with the local shops, underneath the apartment complex, Apartamentos L’Ancora. Most of the eateries those days, were in the old part of town. One big local tourist attraction nearby, runs from Denia to Benidorm, and is the Limón express train service. It is a con! They tell you that Champaign is served, when it is actually, just fizzy wine. Probably wine diluted with fizzy water. Javea’s best known export? David Ferrer. He learnt his trade on the local tennis courts there. The club is open to all, at a reasonable price, from what I can recall. Other attractions nearby? A go kart track, and on the premises, is a crazy golf course, a quad bike track, and a remote control boat pond. The more secluded areas of Jávea, are Adsubia and Cabo de San Martin. CM116 is the villa that I lived in for a while, with two dragons. One was Ted Evans, the control freak , the other was my so called step mother, Margaret Romaine. From early 1973 until the middle of 1975; I attended the local school there. I was then posted off to the nearest boarding school, Lope de Vega, in Benidorm. In February of 1978, not even 15 at the time, the dragon and her husband, Ted Evans, decided to ship me back to England. So there you have it folks! A little bit about the town of Jávea, and a little bit about me, the author of this article. One other point of beauty, is if you go past the right hand turning that becomes Cabo de San Martin, you come to Cabo de San Antonio. Jávea also has a marina, and is well renowned for fishing for mussels, to put in the paellas. It also has a church that looks a bit like Noah’s Ark, after it landed there, and turned to stone 2000 years later. From the ledge on the side of Mount Montgo, is where they set off fireworks on Epiphany night, while on three separate trawlers, the wise men come into Jávea, from where they go to the old part of town, and give out the presents to the children. The downside of that ? They have to return to school the next day!

Hi, My parents and I recently moved to Javea/Xabia. Currently, I’m looking for Pet Sitting Jobs. I have over 20 years experience taking care of dogs that are under 45 kg’s. I can feed the dogs, take them on about a 4 kilometer walk, bath the dogs, and keep them entertained. I’m used to taking care of no more than 2 dogs at a time. The pet owners that I’ve worked with always had a list of feeding times, medications that the dogs had to take/what time, all the vaccines that the dogs have, the dogs have been microchipped, the pets have their tags (rabies tag, microchip tag, a tag with the dogs name/address/and an emergency phone number), and all the pets have gone through behavioral training. Plus, all the pets have had their monthly flea and tick medication. The pet owners have usually given me about 15 euros an hour every time I came to take care of their pets. I also take care of cats and hamsters. Please send an e mail to [email protected] to get in touch with me for pet sitting.

The Arenal beach area is the place to enjoy the nightlife which although relatively quiet and limited does have it’s lively spots such as the nightclub Achill. It’s a great place to walk along the promenade in the evening. It’s very touristy obviously and is the least Spanish part of Javea but nevertheless it is a crucial part.
English Grammar : its = belonging to it; it’s = it is .

Where is Javea?
First up, lets paint of picture and help you understand… where Javea is and what makes it special.
Well referring to our map above you’ll see Javea is on the East Coast of Spain! To be precise, Javea is in the region of Costa Blanca. It’s 1½ hours south of Valencia and just over an hour north of Alicante. This makes getting to and from Javea very easy, given it’s proximity to two international airports.
Javea is loved by holidaymakers, for the stunning beaches and bays (also known as calas ). Lining the rocky coastline, are some of the most beautiful Mediterranean beaches Spain has to offer.
And I have to note, one of things we absolutely love about Javea is the fact that up until now, it has managed to avoid the high-rise, mass tourism, of its surrounding neighbours. I’ll name no names. Therefore, Javea has held on tight to those gorgeous quintessential Spanish feels, especially in the old town and port area.
And the last thing to mention before we start – Javea, is pronounced ha-vee-a . But it’s also called Xàbia, pronounced sha-vee-a in the local Valencian dialect. Therefore, I may refer to both throughout our guide.
21 Summer Fun Things to Do in Javea
Javea is a great place for families, but at the same time has a lot to offer couples or single travellers exploring Spain. Below we jump straight in… so read on for our top 21 things to do in Javea, Spain.
Arenal Beach – Soak up the Sun
About 15-20 minutes from Javea’s port you’ll find the popular pedestrian walkway of the Arenal, it’s right on the beach. By day, both locals and holidaymakers flock to the beach, umbrella, chair and a few beers in the cooler box to spend the day sun bathing.
Like all good Mediterranean beaches the water is crystal clear and calm. The swimming is easy going and there is plenty to keep the kids entertained with the multiple climbing frames dotted along the beach. In addition, for a bit of on-the-water-fun there is a kayak and Paddle-O rental spot at the northern end.
During the summer months, around June to September there are portable toilets and changing rooms set up at the southern end of the beach. Feet washing stations are conveniently located as you leave the beach. Also lifeguards are always on duty. Keep an eye on the flags, for an idea of the swimming conditions – green means go, red means no go.
There is always a good energy at the Arenal both day and night, read below for the Arenal at night! If you want to know more about the best beaches in and around Javea, we recommend you read our complete blog below.

Arenal Tapas & Tintos
As the day begins to cool off, the bars and restaurants of the Arenal begin to heat up. In fact, the afternoon, is an ideal time of the day to find a table on the Arenal. Order some tapas, a tinto, or a cerveza and get comfortable.
Parents – position yourself at a table on the Arenal, across from one of the climbing frames. Then you’ll have the perfect setup to order multiple rounds, while the kids play.
Some of our favourite spots for a bite to eat, would be Chabada, Geographic and Carnaval . But honestly there are so many options, and they are all great. So go wild and try them all if you have time!

Queen’s Baths: Banys de la Reina Xàbia
If you’ve sat at the beach for a while and need to give the legs a stretch, walk around to the Banys de la Reina . Interestingly, translated to English as the Queen’s Baths, the name does not reflect the purpose for which it was used.
Constructed from 100 BC and in use until the end of the 2nd Century, it was a location for fish salting. The Roman’s, with the aid of the natural cove created a channel in the rock for the salt water to funnel through. They then created a fish entrail and salt ferment sauce… mmm yummy!
There is a local dispute associated with this archaeological space. In short, the land above the bath area was gifted to a Minister in the late 50’s. During the construction of the house, part of the baths were destroyed. In the 80’s land ownership questions were raised and the house now sits neglected above. Therefore the Queen’s Baths are also referred to as the Minister’s Cove.
The Queen’s Baths can be accessed from around behind the Parador Hotel which sits on the point at the north of the beach. Basically, walk from the Arenal to the Av. del Mediterraneo , follow it past the Parador. When you see the carpark on the right, follow the track along the rocks out to the point.
Breakfast and a Swim at Portixol Beach
If you haven’t already click through to our beach guide above, then I’m listing the next two beaches here as a must see. Firstly, Portixol (pronounced por-tee-shol ) is one of those beautiful little calas that I spoke about in the introduction.
This was my personal favourite beach to hang out with my kids for the morning. We snorkelled, swam, sun bathed and admired the prettyness of it all. Then popped up to Cala Clemence for breakfast and a coffee.
In terms of photography, I became obsessed with hanging out in the golden hours, trying to get that perfect photo. The blue doors and white houses make for the perfect backdrop alongside the crystal Portixol waters.
I put the drone up too while the beach was empty and couldn’t believe the patterns captured from above. This image shows the deep crevices in the stone reef, a favourite place for the fish to congregate. So don’t forget the Go-Pro!
You can explore Portixol beach, (also known as Cala Barraca) from two access points. During the summer months of July and August, the carpark gets impossibly busy. So busy in fact, that from after 9am you won’t be able to access the road down to Portixol. If you park nearby at the Portixol Cross (Creu) you can walk down into the cala . Note however, that parks here are also limited.
⚠️ We definitely recommend you read our post on the beaches for all the details!
Walk and Swim at Granadella
A second beach and another personal fav is Granadella. Once again parking can be a nightmare, so read our beach post for all the details.
But given that it’s best to get there early, I recommend you start with the walk out to the Granadella Castle or Castillo. This walk is VERY impressive, gifting a view that makes the draw drop. We hung here watching from above for a good 10 minutes.
The walk can be combined as a longer loop walk, or taking the same route back, head to the cala for a swim. We wrote a complete guide to the walks and hikes of Javea, which provides a map and more information on Granadella and the PR CV-354 walking track .

Cliff Jump & Snorkel at San Antonio Marine Reserve
Javea’s costal caves, gigantic cliffs and secluded bays make for some amazing cliff diving and snorkelling spots. This includes the San Antonio Marine Reserve, which stretches from the northern end of the Javea port, around the Montgó headland and through to Cala de Aigua Dolç in Denia.
But it has to be mentioned that the snorkelling just to the east of Cala Tango in the San Antonio Reserve was our favourite snorkelling spot. There are some super fun little cliff jumping spots in Cala Tango ranging between 3m and 7m. Then just a little further over is a small cave and shallow area, ideal for snorkelling. You’ll find an abundant fish life, clear water and generally speaking a very pretty little snorkel experience.
Get there north of the Javea port, via the coastal PR-CV 355 Montgó walking track. A word of warning finding Cala Tango and snorkelling is a little tricky. However, you can download this AllTrails map which will help you find your way. Also read our beach guide, which explains where to find the cliff jumping spots.
Go Kayaking in Javea
Naturally, the coast offers some pretty epic scenery and conditions for kayaking and paddle boarding. We loved our kayaking experience SO much that we wrote a dedicated blog on it!
There are multiple places and beaches on which to book a guided kayak tour. The best include Cala Tango, Granadella and Portixol – all beaches we have mentioned above.
What’s more, we recommend a guided tour rather than renting and taking the do-it-yourself method. This is simply because you’d never find all the hidden gem spots without the experts. Read our guide to find out more, including how much it costs and the best tour operator in Javea.

Rent a Boat
Keeping our list focused on things to do on the water for a bit longer, Javea’s port also offers some great options for day excursions. If you fancy a morning, full day or sunset boat tour, maybe a fishing trip or a diving trip, then you need to add this to your list.
We went out on a fantastic four hour trip with friends in Javea, and have to say it’s right up there with one of my favourite things to do in Javea. The tour was booked with Area Nautica and they provided a fantastic and friendly service.
Just like kids in a candy store, we excitedly jumped onto the boat at the port. Bringing with us a bottle of bubbles and some of our favourite snacks, we headed for the seas. Our skipper was keen to follow our lead, and delivered an awesome day.
We visited several destinations, parking up finally in Cala Sardinera just in time for the arrival of a floating cocktail tiki bar. Naturally, we had to try a piña colada, blended by the onboard bike blender!
If a private boat tour is outside the budget, then check out the group tours on the Mundo Marino Catamaran. This boat gathers a lively crowd and sails around the San Antonio Reserve. I know this as they cruised by us during our morning kayak trip. It looked like a lot of fun!
Walk the Javea Port: Swim, Sightsee and Shop
The Javea port is a super place to spend an afternoon. And there are a few places worth mentioning here. So despite it being just one of our things to do in Javea, there are actually a few places to visit.
We found the free parking on the Av. del Port was the best place to park during the day. It was walking distance to everything within the port therefore convenient.
The shopping throughout the Javea Port is boutique in nature. And it’s always nice to combine a little window shopping, with a swim, and some light sightseeing.
Sightsee at Parroquia del Mar or Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Loreto
The Parroquia or Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Loreto, is something of a piece of art. Now I’m no expert on churches, nor a regular participant, but this one is unlike any church I’ve ever seen.
From the outside a series of structural arches, which appear to reach outwards, form the external walls of the church. While inside the church, the ceiling represents the hull, or bottom of a boat.
Religion and art enthusiasts might like to further note the following. The 12 apostles are represented through the concrete arches, while the “ temple is visualized as if it were the bottom of the sea, whose surface is furrowed by the boat of salvation creating waves of foam that turns into white light .”
As such, the cleverly constructed Iglesia with significance around both boat and ocean , is the perfect tribute to the fishing port of Javea.
Swim at Platja de la Grava
The electric blue water and small stretch of restaurants is a more intimate experience than the Arenal. The small pebble bay is a calm place to swim and sunbathe. And of course just over the road are a series of small cafes and restaurants.
Mid week, spot the elder locals as they walk through Javea Port streets carrying their beach chairs. The rocky beach of Platja de la Grava is their destination, as they go in search of sun and a social catch up among friends.
Shop at Pòsit de Xabia – Fish Market
My favourite kind of shopping, is the sort that ends in my belly.
And the fish market in the Javea Port is an excellent place to shop for the catch of the day! They are open Tuesday to Friday, 4pm to 9pm . Once again you’ll find this is where the locals come to get their seafood.
If you’d rather not do the cooking while on holiday, you could always head across the road to Cala Bandida Restaurant for a bite to eat instead.
Montgó Natural Park
Montgó Massif, the local peak of Javea is an important part of local heritage and history. It’s represented in many signs and images related to the area. And it’s mighty form is ever present in Javea’s landscape, like a beacon helping you realise your location.
We loved learning about the discovery of Cova Barranc del Migdia in the 80’s. During which time climbers stumbled upon a cave spanning several levels on the side of Montgó. Within was found human remains, artefacts and rock paintings, some of which dated back to more than 4500 years ago. Therefore, in terms of archaeology Montgó holds great significance for the region.
Montgó is open year round, offering beautiful flora and fauna for nature lovers to seek out. It is a protected park that stretches 21km 2 with a number of walking trails and sights. There is no doubt that it’s a tremendous natural resource for the community and a space we loved exploring.
If you like the idea of getting the blood pumping, then consider a summit to the top. The return walk takes 2+ hours, over 1.6km of trail . Read our dedicated guide below, to find out about our walk to the summit with kids.

Cova Tallada
Oh geez, another of my favourites!! So much so, that I wrote a full-guide to it, linked below. It was on my list of things to do for my first visit to Javea, but I didn’t get there until the second time I visited.
So interestingly, Cova Tallada is also part of the San Antonio Reserve and Montgó Natural Park. But in fact the best way to visit, or the quickest, is via the walking trail from Denia .
Javea and Denia were once the locations where sandstone (aka tosca ) was mined. And so, you may see areas carved into the oceanside reef and rock, lining the bays and beaches of the region. Cova Tallada is a combination of a natural cave, as well as a man-made cave, as a result of tosca mining. What remains is an extraordinary carved-out cavern of layered rock.
The sea feeds into the cave, and you can stroll around in knee deep water admiring the cavern. There are several parts to explore, other caves, nooks and crannies. The snorkelling is good and the walk in and out is super scenic.
Note : You need to apply online for an entry permit, this is to restrict access to Cova Tallada during the summer season. Read our guide to get the online registration links.

Lighthouse of Cape San Antonio & Mirador
Take the scenic drive out the Lighthouse of Cape San Antonio for the breathtaking view back towards Javea. Located on the tip of Cape San Antonio, and Montgó Natural Park, there are actually 3 view points or miradores to enjoy.
Better still, if you haven’t rented a car, hire a scooter from Martin at Javea Scooters and explore this little peninsula and piece of the Montgó Natural Park. Combine your adventure with a walk to the windmills, or a small trail within the park.
The CV-736 road across from Javea to Denia through the Natural Park was beautiful, as was the drive out to the lighthouse. For the return, take the shortcut down the hill, which enters Javea at the Port. This was a steep, windy drive, but provided spectacular views.
Los Molinos
If you’ve been to the Javea Port already you may have noticed the windmills above on the hill in the National Park. These are known as Los Molinos. They are an interesting destination for a morning or afternoon out. Providing another great view point to look back over Javea.
Some of these windmills are now owned privately, and have been renovated as tiny homes. While others sit vacant on the hill, remnants of a time gone by. In their hay day, the 11 windmills were used as grain mills, they date back to the 14th and 18th century.
Los Molinos can be explored as part of a walking trail on foot from the Port, or can be accessed by car. Check our guide below on where to find the trail.
If you prefer to drive, take the road out towards the lighthouse point at Cape San Antonio. Turn right onto the dead end road of Cami del Molins . There are two sections to see along this road. The first, and smaller cluster with 3 windmills comes first. Park on the side of the road, walking through the trees a short distance, admiring one of the windmills from the outside, which has been renovated.
Then back in the car drive further along, parking just before the road becomes a private driveway. Follow the path to the right and it will bring you to the larger cluster of Los Molinos. In this area some are privately own and renovated, and some are here for the public to walk among and admire.

Stroll the Historic Old Town – Saint Bartholomew Church
In the Javea Historic Centre, you have the charming old town. The following four destinations are located in the Javea or Xabia Historic Centre, but they are difficult to visit all in one trip. As such, you may decide to visit the old town more than once.
The town is mostly restricted to pedestrian access. Therefore we recommend you park underground in the Plaza de la Constitucion, slightly to the north of the old town.
One of the sights we recommend you visit is the church of Saint Bartholomew. Constructed with the local tosca sandstone, the churches origins date back to the 13th Century.
However, much work was carried out on the church, throughout the centuries to meet the towns needs. This was largely due to the fact, that this region of Spain was prone to Barbary pirate attacks. Consequently, the churches renovations was not only a place for worship, but also served as a place of defence. Incorporated into the church design, parapets, arrow slits and other lines of defensives were included.
Javea Food Market or Mercat de Xabia
Javea old town is know for it’s gastronomy, so if you are a food lover you’ll definitely want to dine out a few times. You absolutely must make a booking well in advance (like more than 1 or 2 weeks), for the likes of restaurants such as Volta i Volta .
Another way to experience the local food is to visit the small, but very cool municipal market. Prepare to find meats, seafood, cheeses, olives, wines, honeys and more. We regularly stocked up on supplies for our own tapas. The local stall vendors are super friendly, happy to make recommendations and let you try before you buy.
Then when you have your supplies, stop for a coffee or something a little stronger at the Bar Mercat. It’s not uncommon to see group of locals enjoying a tipple or two before midday.
Located just in behind the Saint Bartholomew church, the Javea Food Market is open from Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, and on Saturday 8am to 5pm .
Soler Blasco Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum
This little museum in the Historic Centre was free and a great way to learn more about the local history. What’s more, the museum is in the historical building and palace of Antoni Banyuls . Once again, the external facade constructed of local tosca sandstone.
The total of 10 exhibition rooms, showcase collections of local history. Over three levels you will get a better understanding of how tosca was mined in Javea and Denia, and you’ll see the treasures and ceramics discovered in the region.
Among our favourites were the exhibit dedicated to the Cova del Migdia – the cave discovered in the 80’s on Montgó. Which I explained above in the section on Montgó. We enjoyed the archeological exhibits displaying the artefacts discovered in the area, as well as the views from the rooftop of the Museum.
Opening hours are from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 1.30pm and from 5pm to 8pm . They operate on a donation basis and we suggest that 60-90 minutes is enough time to see the Museum.
Weekly Market in the Historic Centre
The weekly Thursday market is held above the underground carpark in the Plaza de la Constitucion . There are several fruit and vegetable stalls set up, a great place to pick up some fresh local produce.
There are also vendors selling leather goods, clothes, bags, belts and that sort of thing. Probably not the best markets to do your holiday shopping, but interesting all the same, especially when combined with a visit to the Historic Centre.
Further towards the bottom of the main street by the Iglesia San Felipe Neri y Santa Mónica, the market continues. This was probably my preferred part of the market, lending more to an Artisan food type of feel. Don’t leave without trying churros and chocolate!
Note : That if you visit the historic centre on a Thursday morning, traffic can be very slow!
Les Freses Wine Tasting
I thoroughly recommend a wine tasting at Les Freses near the small village of Jesus Pobre. The tasting takes place in their small orchard, not far outside the Javea Historic Centre. Learn about how the owners stumbled across wine making after a failed attempt at strawberry growing.
Over the period of two hours you’ll be taken on a tour of the vineyards, receiving an explanation of the grape varieties and picking process. Followed by a visit to the cellar and production room to learn more about about how their wines are stored and barrelled.
For the tasting, you’ll try three wines, accompanied by two tapas. Les Freses are known for their dry muscatels, and this made for a very pleasant tasting. I’m not a fan of sweet wines, so tasting a dry muscatel was a unique experience, opening my tastebuds to a new kind of wine altogether. Given the opportunity, I recommend you also try the Àmfora which is barrelled in large traditional clay pots.
You’ll need to make a reservation in advance , their spaces to fill up quickly so allow time. The tasting costs 18€ per person . Kids are welcome, they pay a small fee for tapas and juice.

Farmers Market or Mercat del Riurau, Jesus Pobre
If you like artisan foods and products, then you MUST visit this cute little Sunday market, in the small village of Jesus Pobre. I could have gone wild!
Vendors sell typical breads, pastries and sweets, including a few gluten free options. Watch chocolate making in process and get yourself a few bottles of Les Freses wines for the shelf at home. Find a unique hand made jewellery piece, or collect your weekly organic fruit and veggies.
The Riurau Market , is a great atmosphere. A perfect place to meet up with friends, or to take a simple Sunday day-out! Parking is best found, off the main road to the left of town, and it won’t cost you to park here. The market timings are from 9am to 2pm .
Visit Moraira
Moraira is a small town just south of Javea. It’s worth a morning visit, well combined with a visit to the weekly Moraira Friday markets from 9am till 2pm.
Walk to the Castillo de Moraira, overlooking the ocean and take a swim at Platja de l’Ampolla with the kids. The rock pools and the rocks in general, in and around the Castillo and near the beach are a favourite place for the kids to explore.
Take a Day Trip (Valencia, Guadalaest, Calpe & More)
There are several day trips options from Javea that you might like to consider –
- The city of Valencia – 1½ hours from Javea
- Inland town of Anna – cascades and the Counts of Cervellón’s Palace – 1½ hours from Javea
- Pou Clar – river with swimming holes – 1 hour 15 minutes from Javea
- Guadalest – mountain village and castle – 1+ hour from Javea
- Calpe – coastal town with swimming and historic centre – 35 minutes from Javea
The two days trips that we did and can recommend from Javea are listed below. Neither are very long drives and both completely different from each other.
The mountain village of Guadalest
Just over an hour drive from Javea Historic Centre. We were impressed by the views from the castle over the lake, but also by the drive through the countryside.
One of the special things about this region is the Nispero fruit, which is grown in abundance. As you drive through the valley towards Guadalest the orchards begin to appear. Giant netted orchards protect the sensitive fruit from frost and hail. And when you arrive at the village be sure to ask for a tasting of the Crema de Nispero liquor. This is what the fruit eventually becomes.
Read: A Day Trip to Guadalest Castle from Javea
The coastal town of Calpe
Calpe is a shorter 35 drive from the Javea Old Town. Calpe is the perfect day trip if you want more beach time, but also for a change in scenery.
Our favourite location in Calpe was the Queen’s Baths. Unlike Javea’s Queen’s Baths, but used for the same purpose of salting and fishing, these pools are stunning. As such they are a beautiful place to swim, which I’m sure you can see from the picture above. You can also visit Calpe’s Historic Centre, go flamingo spotting, or head to one of the famous fish restaurants by the iconic Calpe rock.

The Complete Guide For Buying Property in Spain
The areas of javea.
Javea , or Xabia, has three main areas, the Arenal, Javea Port, and the Old Town. Properties in The Port and on the Arenal usually have spectacular Mediterranean Sea views. The old town is about 2km from the beach, it is the historic part of Javea and dates back 700 years to Medieval times. Today, properties here have white facades, arched doors, gothic-style windows and ironwork finished with local Tosca sandstone.
In the Arenal Beach area, you will find dream properties on offer, mostly in apartment complexes, with private pools and well-maintained gardens for residents to enjoy. Or there are fincas with fabulous views of the Montgo Mountain or luxury villas on one of the many urbanisations a few kilometres from the town centre. For those who like a more peaceful life, there is Jesus Pobre, located around 10km inland, away from the hustle and bustle of summer tourism.
The port is between the Arenal and the Old Town. This area has lots of shops, restaurants, bars selling fresh seafood tapas, and the La Grava pebble beach. The site has a relaxed atmosphere, apart from when the fishermen land with their daily catch, and a lively market opens to sell the freshly caught fish.
Types of Javea Properties
If your preference is for a villa for sale, we are confident we can find your dream property. Whether it is 2, 3, or 4 bedrooms or more, we can help. Most villas are built in a classical Spanish style with a sizeable garden and often a pool. Considering the privacy and space you get with a villa, the prices are still relatively low, especially if you don’t mind living a few miles inland.
New build homes are becoming increasingly popular for those looking to buy a dream home in Javea. The minimalistic effect of straight lines and bright white surfaces gives these houses an exceptionally modern feel. New build properties have state-of-the-art features, such as underfloor heating, insulated glass, and the latest smart appliances you can control via a phone app from anywhere with Internet.
Just let us know your needs, and as Javea estate agents with plenty of local contacts, we will do our best to find the perfect property.

15 Best Things to Do in Jávea (Spain)
Located on the Costa Blanca between Valencia and Alicante , Jávea fits is a model Mediterranean beach destination.
The resort has 20 kilometres of coastline, with a wide choice of beaches, like the sandy bay at El Arenal or heavenly coves such as La Granadella.
Away from the coast is an historic centre to wander through, and there are endless opportunities to escape to the wilderness all around: Jávea is bookended by two soaring headlands, and all the while the hulking mass of the Montgó Massif will catch the eye of anyone in need of adventure.
Lets have a look at the best things to do in Javea :
1. Arenal Beach
Many people arriving in Jávea will stop at this beach and go nowhere else for a few days.
Playa de Arenal wins the Blue Flag year after year, and is also the only completely sandy beach in the resort.
It’s almost half a kilometre in length and gains the award for its meticulous standards of cleanliness and possession almost every amenity you could wish for.
Lifeguards are here throughout the summer, there are sports facilities, children’s playgrounds and a host of places to eat at the promenade behind, which we’ll come to next.
2. Arenal Waterfront
Tracing the beachfront next to Avenida de la Libertad is an exceptional shopping and dining district.
The beachside is almost totally pedestrianised and very much a family place, with locals out jogging, walking their dogs and stopping by at ice cream parlours or cafes for a chat with friends.
In the evening there’s a real urban bustle here: You can call in at one of the many bars for pre-dinner drinks, and of course the selection of restaurants is part of the appeal.
Come for Spanish classics like tapas or paella, or American-style fast food, pizza or Chinese.
3. Historic Centre
The oldest area in Jávea was once enclosed by walls, and is set some way in from the coast, surrounding the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento). You can still spot remnants of these defences, such as at En Cairat.
Over time the population spilled out, and there was no need for any fortifications, but you’ll know you’re in the old part of the town because the streets will start to taper and follow an irregular layout that has survived since the middle ages.
The oldest houses and palaces are gorgeous, blending whitewashed walls with the local golden “tosca” sandstone.
4. San-Bartolomé-Church
One monument composed almost entirely of the distinctive local sandstone is this 16th-century church constructed in the Valencian gothic style.
This rock was quarried at Cabo San Antonio, the promontory just to the north of Jávea.
The church was constructed when Corsairs were a constant threat to coastal towns, which explains its tough, military appearance: There are battlements on top and you can even make out the loopholes for guns, as this was a place of refuge during attacks when people would often be captured as slaves.
5. Playa de la Granadella
Another Blue Flag beach is this cove, 130 metres long and hidden between two rugged headlands.
These help keep the sea currents and winds away, so the water could hardly be calmer and clearer.
The sea’s transparency attracts water sports enthusiasts, who use Grandella as the entry point for snorkelling and scuba diving.
There’s also a floating platform during peak season, great for youngsters who will have no difficulty swimming in these shallow and tranquil waters.
The beach itself is gravel, but fortunately sun loungers can be hired all through the summer.
6. Montgó Natural Park
This gargantuan rock has a constant presence in Jávea, rising to 753 metres just to the northwest of the town.
The summit is actually a lot more achievable than its fearsome grey limestone stone cliffs make it seem.
You can take the CV-736 road towards Dénia, parking by Les Planes Campo de Tiro.
You won’t need any climbing equipment, just a good pair of trail shoes, as the path zigzags quite gently for most of the slope.
It’s only when you get near the top that you may have to scrabble over some scree and gravel.
And once there you can take a seat and look down from the formidable landform at the bay and all its now tiny landmarks.
7. Cabo de la Nao
The southern edge of the bay is bounded by this colossal headland 120 metres above the water.
It’s the easternmost point in the Community of Valencia and there are a few vantage points where you can get photos and vistas that stretch out to the Balearic Islands.
There are also three restaurants on the cape, each with outdoor terraces blessed with these incredible panoramas.
On summer days you can pick up a snack or cold drink from the kiosk next to the lookout.
8. Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum
Jávea’s museum occupies one of its most significant civic buildings, La Casa-Palacio de Antoni Banyuls, built in the early-1600s.
Antoni Banyuls was the royal butler of King Felipe II and his residence has a captivating facade made from Jávea’s local sandstone.
The interior was renovated in the 1800s, but the original tiles remain, and are well worth your attention in Room VI. The top floor is an exciting exhibit of items recovered from the waters in the bay of Jávea including ancient amphorae and more recent cannonballs.
Below you can learn about the various old trades in the town, with a forge, farm equipment and traditional folk costume.
9. Cabo San Antonio
Marking the northern limit of the Bay of Jávea is this headland with one of the most complete views of the area, including Arenal Beach, back to the monumental Montgó and down to Cabo de la Nao.
If you’re visiting Jávea with kids you can drive up the CV-7362, which leads right up to the lighthouse where there’s a parking area.
Bring a picnic and bask in the scenery; on a clear day you can even see out to Ibiza.
If you’re an outdoorsy type then there’s nothing to stop you getting here on foot up the steep, scrubby hillsides from the port.
10. Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto
Clashing with the white buildings in the portside Duanes de la Mar neighbourhood is this 1967 modern church built with concrete and designed to evoke seafaring.
It’s a piece of daring avant-garde design, relatively rare for religious buildings in Spain.
The church is without corners and has an oval floor, with bare walls that culminate in a ring of skylights.
Outside there are 12 concrete buttresses supporting the main structure, one for each of the apostles.
You have to go inside to feel the church’s ghostly beauty, where fishermen’s wives would pray for their husbands’ safe return.
Gaze up at the ceiling, which is made with strips of red pine and resembles the keel of a sailboat.
11. Cruz del Portixol
Portixol is a small island preserved as a natural park just up from Cabo de la Nao.
You’ll have the perfect panorama of this pine-topped outcrop from the Mirador de Cruz del Portixol, a viewing platform just back from a limestone headland, and also the nexus point for a number of walking trails.
You could stop for a moment to take a photo and contemplate the scenery before making your way to the edge of the headland or taking a walk through the coastal pine forests to any of a handful of sheltered coves close by.
The town is proud of its natural scenery, and if you visit the local tourist board’s website you can download pdfs of a range of hikes.
All have trailheads that are easy to get to, and the trails are carefully marked.
There’s a fabulous one, the SL CV 97, that leads you from the Crux del Portixol down through forest to the tranquil Cala Barraca.
You can also get hold of a calendar of guided walks, on which you’ll be given a local perspective on the nature and history of the area.
13. Water Sports
Jávea is a kind of Atlantis for water sports enthusiasts, to the point where it’s easier to list the activities that aren’t available! All along the 20 kilometre coastline are locally-run companies specialising in a different activity.
So in the Puerto Deportivo for instance you’ll have sailing charters and motor boat rentals.
Around the more sheltered coves like Granadellla you can get hold of snorkelling equipment, hire a kayak or give paddle surfing a go.
The more open beaches are great for windsurfing and kite-boarding and for these sports you’ve got the Wind Center right on Avenida del Mediterráneo.
14. Other Outdoor Activities
As you’ve seen, thanks to the steep terrain Jávea has a whole series of miradors (panoramic lookouts), and the most enjoyable way to get to them is on two wheels on the Miradores de Xàbia route.
Once again, the local tourist board can help you plot all sorts of other courses, and you’ll never have to spend a lot of time on the roads.
There’s also a nine-hole golf course, Club de Golf Jávea with very reasonable green fees of just €30 for a round.
And besides all this you’ve got mini-golf courses for kids and the go-karting track, Karting Laguna.
15. Local Food and Drink
You’re in the Valencian Community in Jávea, and the plump rice from this region is the basis for a lot of fantastic dishes.
Paella is obviously the most famous, but the interesting thing is that there are lots of little inflections depending on where you are.
Down here in Jávea the traditional way to make it is with beans or turnips, but of course more familiar seafood versions are prepared everywhere.
Nuts of all varieties are grown in the countryside, including tiger nuts, which are the main ingredient in the tasty and refreshing soft drink, horchata.
And when you order tapas, you’ll often get a side aioli for dipping: This delicious garlic sauce goes with pretty much anything.

Please read the following as any request to book a trip will mean that you have accepted and agreed to them.
1. The U3A Jávea and group leaders involved in organising trips and events take every care to ensure that the health and safety requirements of members are taken fully into account. However, they are not liable in any respect for any loss or injury that may be suffered by members whilst participating in the Association’s activities.
2. Only current members of the U3A Jávea may take part in trips and you will be required to give your membership number when booking. Membership is not transferable between different U3A branches, whether in Spain or elsewhere.
3. Some tours/events may not be suitable for members with mobility problems – if you are at all unsure about the walking or difficulty level of any tour, please discuss this with the group leader prior to making a booking.
4. The group leader will endeavour to ensure that some places are available for solo travellers, but the availability of rooms is determined by the hotel/s involved.
5. Any changes to the event/trip offered which may become necessary, either prior to the commencement or during the course of the tour, are solely at the group leader’s discretion and members’ safety will always be paramount; for example, inclement weather may result in certain activities being cancelled at short notice (such as boat or train trips), schedules for visiting monuments etc may be changed, or planned festivals may be cancelled.
6. Members will be made aware of when and how to book any tour and of deposits required – reservations are confirmed once the deposit (or full amount for day trips/events) has been paid.
7. See the section below on Payment for Trips and Events . Should you have any queries concerning payment, please email the group leader.
8. Transfers received from a bank outside of Spain, for example, a sterling UK account, incur a charge of €18 which is the responsibility of the member concerned, not the U3A Jávea. It is preferable to make payments via a Spanish account or by card.
9. Cancellations and Refunds
a) The deposit/further payments are non-refundable if you subsequently cancel your booking. You are advised to let the group leader know immediately by email, as they may have a reserve list of other members wishing to participate in the event/trip and the group leader will arrange a transfer of the booking and a full refund of any payments made by the member/s cancelling.
b) If no other members take over the reservation, a partial refund may be possible, dependent upon the notice given to the group leader and the “fixed costs” which are shared between the members on the tour, for example, the cost of coach hire and the driver’s accommodation and meals during the tour.
10. Travel/Health Insurance
a) Members who are resident in Spain are responsible for ensuring that they have appropriate travel insurance for their own needs.
b) Members who are UK residents are expected to have comprehensive travel insurance including health cover for their stay in Spain, which must include any travel trips undertaken during their stay.
Payment for Trips and Events
Payment must be made by Bank Transfer or Card Payment online
For Bank Transfers – Click here for full details of how to make a bank transfer. You must include the bank reference code (given with the information about the event/trip) along with your name/s, and email a copy of the transfer document to the group leader.

SINGAPORE (Bernama): Spain’s law enforcement agency has uncovered evidence related to the murder of Singaporean woman Audrey Fang Dirou, aged 39, during a search of the hotel room occupied by a 43-year-old compatriot.
The Civil Guard in a statement on Friday said it managed to locate and arrest the Singaporean man on April 16 based on images from surveillance cameras, which showed Fang was picked up by a vehicle outside the hotel she was staying the day before her death.
"Although the dark images did not provide precise information such as the license plate, the Civil Guard managed to find out the make and model of the vehicle after analyzing the size and shape of its front and rear lights.
"This is how they (investigators) managed to follow their trail, tracing the car's round trip route. His starting point was a parking lot near a hotel in Alicante, from where he traveled to the hotel in Jávea where the victim was staying, and later to the municipality of Abanilla,” said the Civil Guard, one of two police forces in Spain.
The agency said once the vehicle and the hotel were located, a surveillance mechanism was established until the suspect was arrested.
The victim who travelled solo to Spain for holiday, checked into a hotel in Javea town in the province of Alicante, Valencia on April 4 and was due to check out on April 10.
According to several media reports, the victim last spoke to her family on April 9 and spotted on CCTV walking out of her hotel at around 8.45 pm the same day.
Meanwhile, Spain’s Olive Press today reported that the suspect was brought to court in Cieza, Murcia on Friday where the victim’s family lawyer Manuel Martinez requested the unnamed Singaporean to be sent to prison ahead of the trial.
Fang’s brother and two other relatives also attended the hearing.
Fang’s family contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on April 11 after they were unable to contact her and made a police report a day later after she did not arrive in Singapore as scheduled.
The victim’s body with multiple stab wounds was discovered on April 10 in an area near the parking lot of a restaurant in Abanilla municipility of Murcia region, which is about 150 kilometre away from the hotel she stayed in.
The authorities were initially unable to confirm her identity as no documentation was found on the body. - Bernama
