Over-the-door towel rack

Apart from the kitchen counter flaw, RVs never seem to have enough towel racks in the bathroom. A cheap and easy solution is over-the-door towel racks, which you can easily buy online or at department stores.

No drills, simply hang the hooks over the thickness of your bathroom door or shower.

Open storage compartments in an RV are never adequate, even if you are a minimalist. Hampers and closet organizers will help you effectively optimize space and keep things organized.

RV Closet organizers

These come in a variety of forms and shapes. Most are foldable for space saving and super lightweight. You should definitely get some foldable storage bin cubes, which you can stack up, and some hanging shelves with sturdy metal frames for separating your items into categories and for easy access.

Storage bin cubes usually come in packs of 4, 6 or 8 at $12 to typically under $30 for a pack. Hanging shelves can range from $13 to $30 for one.

If you are a neat freak, maybe grab some drawer dividers for underwear and thin summer clothes. When you don’t need them any more for your RV, they will always be useful in your home.

RV space saving hack

This is a super hand trick shared and loved by seasoned RVers. A huge plus is, it is very versatile and can be used for closets, kitchen cabinets and anything else. This RV storage ideas will help you find things more easily by categorizing and will keep them from tumbling to the side on top of each other. No doubt it is also a super popular household storage hack.

All you need is one of those cheap, commercially-available cloth shoe storage racks, some scissors, and some velcro… and you’ve got an amazingly versatile storage hack to add anywhere in your RV you see fit. Some choice spots include along the base of the bed in the master or on the sides of your RV couch.

RV Storage Ideas

RV Storage Ideas: Kitchen

Cooking on your own on longer trips is essential regarding both your budget and health. This is why every RV storage ideas list includes a number of kitchen organization tips and portable accessories.

A lack of counter space can sometimes be a problem in RVs. One simple hack is to make a DIY stove cover or sink cover to give you more space for prep. A sink cover could even double as a chopping board – you can simply cut a wooden chopping board to fit.

RV kitchen hack

Many RV DIYers have also added to their countertops by creating their own simple fold-out extensions, which will hang down or slide into existing cabinets when not in use.

Fruit bowls are lovely displays, of course — why else would so many artists immortalize them in still life paintings?

But when you’re on the road, those carefully-arranged apples and bananas can quickly take to flying through the air if you forget to stow them away when you’re ready to pick up camp and move on. All to say nothing of the fact that your beautiful bowl takes up precious kitchen counter space, which you probably don’t have too much of to spare.

fruit hammock RV hack

Our favorite solution to this potentially-sticky problem? A fruit hammock! Not only does it save you space, but it also helps your fruit last longer by providing gentle ventilation that won’t bruise or crush. And yeah, it looks pretty neat, too.

Think about it, how much more food can you fit into your rig’s tiny kitchen if the storage containers you use all fit neatly together? It’s definitely a lot more than you’ll be able to pack in if you’re using round or otherwise irregularly-shaped containers.

The trick here is only opting for square plastic containers that are stackable and preferably by the same brand so you can organize them neatly like Legos.

RV storage ideas kitchen

A good set of airtight food containers can help you keep leftovers and dry goods fresh for longer than they’d stay in a bag or box, as well as allowing you to pack more of it into your RV’s kitchen cabinets and refrigerator. You can even look into smaller, single-serving containers made specifically for meal prep.

A multi-functional cooker will save you space on your small RV by combining typically 7 kitchen appliances in 1, including: pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, sauté, yogurt maker, and warmer.

The most user-friendly, reliable and affordable cooker is arguably the Instant Pot Duo Mini 7-in-1 Electric, which costs $60. It receives a 4.5 overall rating from almost 50,000 positive reviews on Amazon, making it the absolute best seller.

This might not sound super grand, but is one of those RV hacks you will love more and more the longer you spend on the roads. Towing on bumpy roads can cause annoying rattling and worse, your cutlery can fall off the shelves and brake.

A favourite cutlery protector by full-time RVers is the Camco Stack-A-Plate, which costs $10 for a pack of 2, one small and one big.

RV cutlery protector

Stacking dishes vertically in a dish cradle makes them take up less space and, more importantly, makes it easier to get them out without needing to take anything off the top of them.

A peg board on the wall looks like a really cool, easy way to organize the unorganizable: pots, pans, cups, mugs and utensils. Peg boards are used in supermarkets and department stores as they offer easily customizable solutions for organizing shelves.

RV space saving kitchen

You can use your creativity with this super versatile and easy-to-work-with material to organize your working station and wardrobe – with different kinds of hooks, the possibilities are endless. You can use many peg boards of appropriate sizes for any intended spaces.

While you’re on it, getting some organizers for your fridge would also prevent rattling and things knocked over as well as maximizing space. These plastic containers make it easy to look for, pull out and put back things and importantly, keep your produce fresh.

fridge organizer RV

If you’re an avid chef, you know how important it is that the blade matches the purpose. But when you’ve got several knives on hand, it can be difficult to find a way to fit them all in your RV’s kitchen drawers… and big, clunky knife block is right out of the question.

Magnetic knife holder

Magnetic knife strips are a great way to keep your knives handy, out of the way, and also as sharp as possible, since they won’t be clanging around with other silverware in your drawer. Just make sure they’re well-adhered before you take off for a new campsite — you definitely don’t want those guys flying around inside your coach!

Another creative application of wall mounted magnetic strips is a magnetic spice rack. This is a great way to keep your flavors close at hand, out of the way and easy to access.

This spice rack can be installed right under a cabinet and will save tons of RV cabinet and counter space .

Fold Out Spice Rack

Honestly, using magnetized storage is one of our very favorite space saving ideas, both in an RV or a sticks-and-bricks home. You can find all kinds of neat magnetic storage solutions, like this all-in-one paper towel and utensil organizer by Great Circle. Just make sure it’s good and solid before you put, as they do in the photo, something as heavy as a full wine bottle into the caddy. And don’t forget, if you don’t have room on your RV refrigerator (or if it isn’t magnetic), you can always install magnetic strips on your RV’s walls!

RV magnetic fridge shelf

By now you should have noticed a clear pattern in any list of RV storage ideas: in a small space, try to optimize vertical space. That is, hang everything that you can hang. Plus, surely in the settings of an RV, anything hung must be secured for safety and organizational purposes.

If you’ve got the extra room on your RV’s walls, you can make your quest for food storage accessories like aluminum foil and cling wrap even easier by mounting the rolls of aluminum foil and saran wrap on the wall. Crazy easy and useful, right? A great idea from Anna Moseley over at Ask Anna.

RV kitchen roll hangers

One of the simplest ways to maximize the limited space inside your RV kitchen cabinets actually has nothing to do with retrofitting more shelving or finding clever ways to mount magnetic objects.

It’s actually as simple as purchasing pots, pans, and other cookware items that were made to fit in as little space as possible, such as this space-saving six-piece set.

The $299 price tag might seem steep, but as long as you take care of them, pots and pans really only need to be purchased once. And by choosing a single, stacking set like this (as opposed to just bringing along whichever pieces from home you feel like), you’ll capitalize on your RV’s kitchen space and buy yourself more room to store other goodies — like, you know, actual food!

Not in the market for a whole new set of cookery? We get it. Fortunately, there are less-expensive ways to achieve more or less the same result.

A simple kitchen cabinet organizer can help keep unruly pans and lids at bay, both increasing your usable storage space and making it way easier to find the piece you’re actually looking for. And at less than $15, it’s a far cry from purchasing a whole new set!

If you have OCD or are willing to spend extra money for effortless access to your kitchenware, there is probably nothing better out there than pull-out cabinet organizers and under-sink organizers. Depending on your needs, take your pick among pull-out drawers, lid organizers, cookware and bakeware organizers. Each type is specially designed to best store different types of kitchenware safely and offers instant access while maximizing space.

Pull-out cabinet organizers

For instance, cookware organizers feature strong heavy-duty adjustable dividers, so that you can customize to securely hold the different sizes and styles of pots and pans. Bakeware and cutting board organizers typically have tall dividers to keep everything organized, separated and easy to access. Meanwhile, lids organizers feature  loop dividers to securely hold pan lids of all sizes and styles.

Pot lids are the worst things to find space for. They are awkward and never sit right. Alternative to the above lids organizer, you can just use a curtain rod to hold them on the back of a cupboard.

Here’s a way to keep your kitchen goodies separated and secure that’s both super-cheap and fully customizable. Instead of buying a wire cabinet organizer, try a pack of tension rods, the kind you might use for window curtains.

A pack of six will run you about $15 on Amazon, and you can easily install and reinstall to your heart’s content. Install them vertically to safely store cutting boards, trays, baking trays, baking sheets … for easy access.

Cooking in your RV is one thing, but clean-up can be a whole different ball game. After all, you most likely aren’t packing a dishwasher, even in the most luxurious of rigs… and you can only fit so much into even the most generous of kitchen sinks.

roll up dish drying rack

Taking up counter space with a traditional drying rack could spell disaster if you forget to put things up before you pull out of camp, and besides, even the folding ones are pretty unwieldy to store. That’s why the new-generation roll-up dish racks are often featured as one of the most revolutionary RV storage ideas these days.

Just unroll it over your sink to allow your dishes to drip dry, and then curl it back up tight when it’s time to store it and move on. These racks are typically made with stainless steel rods coated entirely with food-grade silicone, which keeps the rack completely slip-free and heat-resistant. The anti-bacterial silicone coating means cleaning will be a breeze.

In addition to dinnerware, you can use these racks when washing and drying vegetables and fruits. Super simple, super versatile, super space-saving and it’ll only cost you from $18 to about $22 for a high quality silicone rack.

Over-cabinet-door organizer

A version of the highly versatile over-the-door home organizers, you can further optimize vertical space by hanging these wire baskets over your cabinet doors. You can hand them either outside or inside, to easily access items that you frequently reach for, such as cling wraps, baking sheets, aluminum foil… They also offer an ideal place to leave cutting boards, baking sheets and baking trays out to dry.

Garbage is a smelly problem even in the best of circumstances and that goes double when you’re traveling in the tight quarters of an RV. A traditional garbage can not only allows obnoxious odors into your rig’s coach, but also takes up precious floor space. Definitely not ideal as no one wants to look at their garbage all day.

These convenient over-cabinet-door garbage baskets are perfect for RVing. They keep your garbage out of sight, out of mind, and — most importantly — out from underfoot. Of course, you can use these over-the-door baskets for almost anything.

They’re small, but in a rig, you’ll be wanting to take out your garbage pretty frequently anyway. And they’re cheap so that you can easily invest in a few for the kitchen and a few for the bathroom.

Under-sink drawer

These cabinet-sized drawer units are on the pricey side, but if you have the money they can be one of the best ways to use RV cabinet space that may otherwise be wasted. Secure them with bungee cords to keep them from opening on the move.

They’re great for packing extra dry goods into your kitchen, but you can also use them in the bathroom or bedroom for clothes, towels, and more. These baskets are hugely popular in households and are among the most affordable yet versatile organizing solutions for small spaces like rented apartments.

under-shelf baskets

Yes, hang them all! You might be surprised by how much space is available when adding up a little bit of under-shelf space here and there. And more under-shelf RV storage ideas means more counter space freed up for prepping and cooking.

Surely you must store them away while the wheels are rolling, but these hooks offer a quick solution for drying them without taking a lot of precious kitchen counter space.

Under-shelf hooks holder

One area of RV storage ideas has nothing to do with the internal space of an RV, but creatively deals with the external space. The roof and the back of a motorhome offer a lot of space for mounting those bulky gears like paddle boards, kayaks, bicycles and camping gears.

Another hack to increase the forever-limited storage capacity on your RV is to add an external mount to the rear of the vehicle . Bicycles and kayaks are the most common items that you will see.

RV mount

In addition, you could also use an external mount to stow extra fresh water tanks or waste containers. Some full-time RVers even stow a whole little greenhouse for their RV-grown fresh produce, or an outdoors kitchen. Yes, that is one hell of a creative RV storage ideas. Extra space will allow you to take on plenty of cool DIY projects for amazing upgrades, helping you get the best out of your RV living .

Showering outdoors in good weather is a perk of the RV life. For a bit of fun, or if you do not have enough space for a shower in your small RV, or many people are sharing one bathroom, which is often the case, you can fit your own outdoor shower on the side of your vehicle.

An outside shower will prevent the interior of your RV from extra moisture and is useful for getting the mud off from your trekking trip before you go inside. Make your own privacy screen for your outdoors shower using a shower curtain and wire or piping is a fun and not too challenging project.

Check out the best RV shower head units here !

If you’re traveling with your family, there might not be a comfortable space for dining inside the RV. Plus, a huge perk of RV camping is dining outdoor while enjoying nature, which also keeps your RV fresh and free of odors.

If you love staying outdoors in great weather, an RV awning is a must. An awning can provide shade and help save money on cooling in hot summer weather. It can also provide a shaded place to dine, enjoy a drink or read outside your RV.

If you don’t want to invest in a commercial awning, there are many guides, including videos, within the RV community on how to make your own awning by up-cycling the material from an old tent, or even old umbrellas. A curtain rod and simple pulley system plus some craftsmanship will provide reliable support for your awning.

RV Storage Ideas: Others

You’ve got your cell phone, notebook, reading glasses, whatever it is you’re actually reading… and soon, you’ve got a great big mess right alongside your bed.

At home, you might be able to just stuff it all in the nightstand and forget about it. But depending on the design of your RV, you may not have a convenient nightstand junk drawer… or any nightstand at all!

Bedside portable caddy

A portable, caddy-style organizer not only offers extra room and encourages you to keep things separated and easy to find, but you can also simply pick it up and tote it along with you to the living room, or wherever.

Another “over-something” RV storage ideas. If you’re in a travel trailer rather than a motorhome, you spend a lot of time in your tow vehicle — and it can get cluttered just as quickly as your cabin can. That’s especially true if you’re traveling with kids, who have to bring along their whole playpen in order to endure the long driving hours of a typical camping road trip.

These backseat car organizers can help keep everything you and your family needs within reach, without having it be spread all over the backseat itself. Even if you’re not traveling with kids, it’s an easy and affordable way to extend your RV’s storage space, especially for items that you don’t need every single day inside the coach itself.

Over-the-seat caddies

Command hooks might top the list of those RV storage ideas that seasoned RVers everywhere would universally agree on. They are not only useful in RV settings but are hugely popular in the homes as well, thanks to their versatility, easy installation and damage-free removal.

Yes, in case you haven’t heard of this magical creation, these hooks are designed so that you can remove them safely without stripping the paint on your wall or doors. The mechanism is simple: it sticks on surfaces by a thick adhesive. To remove, pull the end of the adhesive that sticks out vertically downward and do so very slowly.

The adhesive is made from a material that is stretchy and strong, so when you pull it correctly, it would not break but instead stretch to the point where it comes off the surface clean and damage-free.

Same mechanism with command hooks and also damage-free, command strips are just like velcros – each consists of one hook strip and one loop strip, both with adhesive on the back. Stick one trip to the wall and stick the remaining strip to anything that you need to secure on a surface.

Got a habit of losing the TV remote? Just a small command strip on an unassuming side of your RV couch can help you keep those zappers close at hand at all times.

These strips are very handy for securing small items that you often reach for but are easily lost. They also work wonders in case you want to secure something to a surface to avoid it rolling around or getting knocked on the floor while your RV is on the move.

Wire magazine rack are lightweight and can easily be mounted on walls, doors and cabinets sides. You can use them to store anything.

Keeping shoes near the RV entrance is a good idea. The best solution is to mount a regular over-the-door shoe organizer with pockets on the door. You can easily cut the pocket organizer into smaller pieces to fit your door.

Collapsible ottomans are great for adding extra storage and utility at the same time. When not in use, just collapse them and put them away.

vacuum sealed bags

If you’re bringing extra pillows, blankets, or clothes with you in the RV, these vacuum-sealed bags are an excellent way to keep them fresh and save space. The cheaper version is simply a zipper bag, where you roll the bag with, say, a blanket in it to force the air out, then zip it close.

Needless to say this version is far less effective than a kit that comes with a vacuum. If you travel a lot, it’s best to invest in a decent kit with reusable bags and a vacuum. Otherwise, a pro trick is to turn the hairdryer around and place the intake valve into the neck of the bag, then turn on the hairdryer while minimizing any opening. The air will be sucked out of the zip bag.

RV Furniture with Storage Built In

Posted on Published: June 18, 2019

RV furniture with storage built into it is much needed when you live in a space as small as an RV (even though some RVs are massive!).

It’s important to make sure that everything you have in your RV serves its purpose well. And if it can serve more than one purpose… well that’s ideal!

Furniture takes up so much room in our living spaces… sure, it adds huge value in terms of comfort, but could it also be used for more?

Space is at an absolute premium, and it’s super important to make sure that there is a place for everything. And no, piling everything on the sofa does not count as a place for everything!

Many RVs come with furniture built in and include storage in them; but sometimes that furniture is either uncomfortable or impractical so you want to pull it out. But what about all that storage space you’re going to lose as well?

That’s where RV furniture with storage built-in will be great…

Dining Tables

RV dining tables are one of those things that takes up a lot of precious space in an RV, but they’re so useful. Not only do we eat at them, we also relax there, use our computers or devices, do crafts, read, study, write… there’s so much that we do while sitting at a table.

Square or rectangular tables are usually going to make the most sense, and if they come with either a shelf or cupboards underneath, that makes them really useful! (As long as they don’t get in the way of your knees, or cause you to kick your shins every time you sit down.)

Ikea Gateleg table with drawers – I’ve seen a number of renovated RVs with this dining table and it seems to fit on a slide well.

With any of these folding dining tables, it’s important for you to consider whether you actually need it to be folding, or whether you’ll end up having it at the large size all the time anyway.

And here’s a round RV dining table with storage that I love… but may prove to be an impractical shape for all but the largest of RVs.

Kitchen Island

If you don’t already have a kitchen island, but you have the space for one, you could consider getting a portable kitchen island which has storage built into it. Like these examples…

I’m suggesting that it be portable so that it can be moved around in your small space and secured off to the side when not in use, travelling, or the slide can’t be put out.

Another way of maximizing the space in your RV, would be to combine your kitchen island with your breakfast bar, and doing away with the dining table altogether.

Here’s what I mean…

Many people find that a custom built sofa is the best option for their RV, simply because space is so limited and you want to make the most of every inch that you can. If you want storage under your sofa as well, then custom built really is your best option.

However, if you can find a store bought sofa , with storage, that fits (!!) well, you’re on to a winner. Here are a couple that you could look at:

If you want to have a recliner in your RV, then you’ll have to kiss good-bye to storage underneath your seat as there’s no room. There are some recliners that have storage in the arm rests, but it’s not much and most likely just for the remote and snacks!

Ottomans are my favorite in an RV because they can be so versatile. You can use them to put your feet up on, as a coffee table, an extra seat and extra storage.

The units are very strong. We loaded both bottom drawers up with canned goods and heavy grocery items and they have never been a problem.

The two units together are 6 feet and Judy's van is no an extended van. As you can see in this picture, there is very little room left for the bed behind them. How did we sleep together? I'll tell you that in the next post!

Is there a bottom to the cases the drawers slide in? If so, it might be possible to screw them to the floor (if one has added a plywood subfloor) or bolt them through the van floor. That’s what I did with the cabinet I built.

Bob

Al, I don’t think you could bolt through the bottom. Besides I’m too lazy to do that if I can find any other way. Bob

carly

What a tease you are! I am dying to find out how you both slept in a double bed with these drawers taking up so much room.

They flipped a coin to see who would sleep outside with the mosquitoes and rain. And Judy has a trick coin.

Just a few more days! Bob

I have the 3-drawer version of this that I have been dragging around for several years. I have moved it in and out of various places and pretty much “done whatever” with it. It still works exactly as it did when new. I will remember that the 4-drawer fits into a van. Also, I don’t believe there is a piece under the bottom drawer. I’ll keep it simple with ratchet straps and bungee cords.

Forgot to check the follow-up box.

judy

Non-skid shelf liner is the secret to things not scooting off the tops of my drawer units while traveling. I keep a hammer in the container covered with butterfly material for weight. When Bob’s small plastic baskets were on top of his drawer, quarters for laundry helped hold them in place. Anything touching the shelf liner would stay put. For instance a stack of books would all fall off except the bottom one. I know first hand that if you fail to secure the drawers closed for travel, it IS possible for all the drawers to slide open on a sharp fast turn at a red light & this Will cause the unit to topple over! Even filled with canned foods, the drawers slid easily.

You are correct Calvin. The only thing on the bottom is what’s required for the drawer to function.

Linda D.

Bob, you’re such a tease….but, Thanks for the post on these handy drawer thingy’s. I’ll be checking them out next time I go to Wally World or Home Depot or Lowes…since I’ve noticed that Lowes has about the same things as Home Depot.

Linda, I would expect most hardware stores to have them. If nothing else you could do site-to-store and get it from Walmart.com and have it delivered for free to your local store. They are pretty easy to find, but if not they are worth the effort to search. Bob

I got the idea from Judy at the RTR.I love mine it is the greatest idea yet. I also strapped mine down via a ratchet strap to the seat but I am still struggling with keeping the drawers closed while driving. I have a high top conversion I wish I could get 2 in. Because the hook to the seat is so low the 2 top drawers still fly open. I put a noodle (Foam Beach toy)across but it does not always stay. I will keep working on it. When I took out the middle seats the seat belts also came out. You did give me the idea to try a seat belt hook thanks.

Linda, getting great little tips like this one is the best thing about the RTR. I always learn something every year. I suggested in a later comment that you use bungee cords around the whole drawer unit to keep a pole in place and keep all the drawers closed. Bob

Ken in Anaheim

Looking at the first picture it seems like you could just get a 1/4-1/2″ 3′ dowel (or a yard stick) and stick it vertically under the ratchet strap to prevent the drawers from opening……. KinA

I have tried a metal pole.It works for the bottom 2 drawers but not tight enough for the top. The problem is that the strap starts at the bottom of the seat so it is low. Wish I could show u pic.Anyway I will keep trying.

Linda, in the 1st and 5th picture you can see where the business end of the red ratchet strap is just next to the drivers seat. At the edge of my seat is where the metal ends of the strap hook together. My hooks have a circle of metal on them. I hook one end of a bungy cord into that circle of metal and the other to the clothes hanger hook. In the center of pic #1 you can see the upper end of my blue bungy. When the other end is brought down it catches the first 2 drawers. On really rough dirt roads the bungy will allow the doors to bounce open an inch or so but that isn’t a problem at all. Does your van have the clothes hanger hook?

Linda, you could always run a bungee cord all the way around the unit at the top under the first drawer. Then put the pole under it and the ratchet strap. The unit is big so you would have to use two or three bungees but it would just be a matter of finding the right combination of lengths. You could actually run one around under the top two drawers and I’m sure that would keep the pole tight. Bob

Ken, Judy changed her system and I just happened to have the perfect piece of wood for her to do that and it has worked perfectly for her. Bob

jim

I’m glad you and ms judy had a great and safe trip to alaska i bet your glad to be back always nice to go somewhere bet evening nicer to get back to what a person is use to, how you coming on getting a new best friend aka a dog

Jim, actually I have got a new dog. His name is Cody and he is a joy to me. I’ll do a post about him probably after the next one. Bob

Another way to keep the drawers closed while traveling: loosen the straps/belts and rotate the units 90 degrees so they’re facing each other face-to-face. Then tighten the straps/belts.

Al, are you saying to do that at the beginning and end of every trip? That seems very impractical to me. With canned goods in them they are fairly heavy and I don’t think ragging them around would be good for the. I must be misunderstanding? Bob

The training from my career has me constantly thinking of other ways to do things — whether they’re or not. 😉

That should be “whether they’re good or not.”

Al, that’s how all advancements are made! Bob

Before getting the second unit, I considered placing my drawers facing to the rear of the van & ratchet strapping them to the drivers seat. I believe that placement would keep the drawers closed while traveling. But I wasn’t willing to have the area between the front seats blocked by that 7″ overhang.

Also in order to access the drawers, you could not have anything else placed near a rear facing unit except on a temporary basis. A huge drawback when space is so precious.

FreedomSerenity

I’m impressed with your innovation! preparing to begin my maiden journey from Santa Fe to the East coast and packing my RV knowing i have more than i will eventually need/want. Surely I will distribute to others along the way. So glad you’re here!

FreedomSerenity, I know what you mean. Every time I have began a new chapter of my mobile life I tarted out with way too much stuff. Like you, I left a bread-crumb-trail of “stuff” across the country. That’s good for the soul and for other people both! Bob

Voronezh stations are designed to detect and track ballistic and cruise missiles and other aerodynamic objects.

On the Internet and in print, you can find the wrong name for these stations - over-the-horizon or over-the-horizon radar.

Early warning early warning radar "Voronezh"

Since December 1 of last year, they have become part of the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces.

The main feature of the Voronezh radar station is its high factory readiness.

The first to develop and put into operation a meter-range radar station "Voronezh-M". The next development was the Voronezh-DM radar. The third radar data model is Voronezh-VP.

The first steps towards the creation of radar stations with VZG were taken in 1986 during the creation of the radar station DO "Selenga".

VZG provides installation period for these radar stations no more than 18-24 months.

The stations consist of 23 units of sets of equipment.

Image

Voronezh uses hardware and design solutions that allow assembling a system from a set of ready-made factory assemblies with characteristics that meet the operational and tactical requirements of the installation site. All issues of energy resource management are solved programmatically and technologically. Built-in control and high-tech control system reduce maintenance costs.

Service personnel are accommodated in standardized containers that have a system for ensuring temperature characteristics.

The designers have worked out the range of cabinets - "Voronezh" has 12 types of cabinets, of which the cabinets with transmitting and receiving equipment and the AFD control system are serial. There are 22 non-serial cabinets on the radar station of the Voronezh subsidiary, they were placed in 3 containers, in which the equipment for monitoring temperature characteristics is also installed.

Receiving and transmitting equipment in the "Voronezh" radar station is located in the large antenna complexes of the VZG. They are ready for transport and assembly units.

The installation of these complexes takes place on fast assembly support structures. This leads to the rapid construction of an active antenna pattern. This block-complex assembly reduces losses in the transmission and reception paths, reduces the temperature and, in general, gives a high indicator of the efficiency of the antenna device. In addition, this layout allows for upgrades. Emitters are located at the end of each container.

The radar antenna DO SPRN "Voronezh" uses a method of creating subarrays for reception, which reduces the amount of equipment used without lowering the characteristics of the antenna pattern. The method is implemented on the mutual overlap of sublattices and the use of special amplitude distributions in them.

The stages of the transistor design of the transmitting amplifiers in the AFD interact in a "hot collector" manner. This allows the transmitting equipment to be cooled with "outboard" air coming through the ventilation equipment, which is part of the technical equipment. This "live" ventilation made it possible to abandon the overall thermal stabilization and cooling systems.

The hot air cooling circuit is distributed to all antenna boxes using an integrated air duct system.

The temperature indicators on the end switches of the air ducts of the installed modules are on average no more than 45 degrees. At low temperatures, in winter, the circuit is closed, and warm air is used to heat the antenna boxes. Warm air in the circuit is diluted with cold outside air to maintain a certain temperature.

Image

The equipment of the receiving channels has not only digitization of signals, but also built-in processors for initial digital processing and verification control of the receiving paths. This approach saves computing facilities "Voronezh" and channels for transmitting information, and reduces the loss of processed signals, using digital methods to stabilize the non-identity of the used phased array channels.

Digital signal processing occurs at the carrier output frequency with the following allocation of quadrature elements, which made it possible to qualitatively reduce the loss of processed information.

Computing equipment used for primary and secondary processing is made on a "server" computer with an open architecture of information processing in real time. The computer is unified for all types of promising topics. It has two types of processor cells and 2 buses: the VME bus and the user bus. Constructive computer box - "Euromechanics". The performance of the solution is up to one hundred billion operations per second. The computer has unlimited possibilities for upgrading and expanding. The occupied area is half of a standard cabinet for Voronezh equipment. Consumes 1.5 kW / h. Service is not provided. Guaranteed operating time 80 thousand hours.

Functional and technical control is performed as peripheral coprocessors, which are built into technical equipment, combined with a central coprocessor by a high-speed interface. This made it possible to reduce the volumetric dimensions of the equipment, increase the reliability of the information flow and functional control.

The Voronezh radar station uses programmed regulation of the potential in the sector of responsibility for range, angles and time, the mode of saving consumed resources.

Software adjustment with these modes makes it possible to quickly change the power consumption of the radar station in normal, combat and readiness for combat use modes, to equalize the energy consumption in the working sector of the radar station.

During the installation of the head radar of the DO SPRN "Voronezh-DM" near the city of Armavir, for its power supply, a power line with a total length of more than eight kilometers was extended, communications and roads were built.

At the installation site of the radar, a checkpoint was set up, a BVM, facilities for water intake, an electrical substation, a fire station, and an underground shelter were installed. The premises have been modernly decorated. For the personnel of the radar, they created quite comfortable conditions for living and performing combat missions. For recreation and physical training, there is a training tower, a volleyball court and a hundred-meter course for training fire station personnel. The entire area is lit and fenced around the perimeter. Seedlings of trees and shrubs have been planted.

Since the start of construction, mid-2006, a set of works has been carried out on 58 units of construction projects. Completion of construction - 2009. Contractor - USS No. 7 Spetsstroy RF.

Image

The main characteristics of the radar "Voronezh":

Ukraine war latest: Ukraine reportedly hits aviation training center in Russia's Voronezh Oblast

Key developments on April 9:

Ukraine hits aviation training center in Russia's Voronezh Oblast, source says

Russian attacks against 3 Ukrainian regions kill 2, injure 10

Germany to deliver 20 additional armored vehicles to ukraine, iaea: drone attack reported on zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant's training center, prosecutors investigating executions of 54 ukrainian pows by russia.

Ukrainian drones attacked a Russian aviation training center in the city of Borisoglebsk in Russia's Voronezh Oblast overnight on April 9, a representative of Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR), who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Kyiv Independent.

The intelligence agency's spokesman later confirmed there was an attack, without clearly saying that Ukraine was behind it.

The Russian Telegram channel Astra claimed the aviation center for flight personnel training was attacked by two drones . The drones allegedly exploded, damaging the facade of the building and windows, according to the Telegram channel.

The representative of Ukraine's military intelligence told the Kyiv Independent that the operation was conducted by HUR without providing further details.

Andrii Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine's military intelligence agency, said that an aircraft factory was targeted in Russia's Borisoglebsk.

"We will not disclose any details, but according to preliminary information, the main production facilities of the enterprise were affected," Yusov told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) on April 9.

Russian air defenses shot down two drones over Belgorod Oblast , two over Voronezh Oblast , and a Neptune anti-ship missile near the occupied Crimean coast overnight, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed.

The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the claims.

Ukraine has intensified strikes against military and industrial targets in Russia in recent weeks. On April 5, a joint operation of military intelligence and the Armed Forces reportedly hit the Yeysk, Engels-2, and Kursk airfields.

Russia allegedly lost seven military aircraft during the drone attack on the Yeysk airbase in Krasnodar Krai in Russia, a source at Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) told the Kyiv Independent.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and Ukraine's military allegedly carried out an attack against the Russian Morozovsk airbase overnight on April 5, sources familiar with the matter told the Kyiv Independent. Su-34 fighter-bombers and Su-27 fighters were reportedly based at the airfield.

At least six military aircraft were destroyed, and another eight were damaged, according to the source. Furthermore, about 20 Russian soldiers were reportedly killed or wounded.

Russian attacks against Donetsk, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv oblasts on April 9 killed two people and wounded another 10, according to the latest updates by regional authorities.

In one of the latest attacks, Russian forces hit the outskirts of Sloviansk in Donetsk Oblast, injuring three people, Governor Vadym Filaskhin reported.

Sloviansk was hit in the afternoon, and three people aged 53, 64, and 66 suffered injuries, Filaskhin said on Telegram.

Russia has recently increased attacks against Sloviansk and nearby settlements, according to Vadym Liakh , the head of the city’s military administration.

A Russian attack on the town of Semenivka in Chernihiv Oblast earlier on the same day killed a woman, according to Governor Viacheslav Chaus. Russia used artillery and multiple-launch rocket systems to carry out the attack, Chaus said on Telegram.

Russian forces also attacked a civilian enterprise in downtown Kharkiv with guided aerial bombs on April 9, injuring at least four people, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said on Telegram.

The buildings caught fire and were destroyed as a result of the latest attack, Kharkiv Oblast Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported .

Russia recently intensified attacks against Ukraine's second-largest city with the use of missiles, glide bombs, and drones, reportedly destroying almost all of its energy infrastructure.

Russian forces also struck Kostiantynivka and Sokil in Donetsk Oblast, killing one person and wounding three more, Governor Vadym Filashkin reported.

Settlements in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk Oblast suffer from daily Russian attacks due to their proximity to the front line. Heavy fighting continues in Donetsk Oblast as Russia seeks to occupy the entire region.

The German government commissioned the German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall to deliver 20 additional Marder armored vehicles to Ukraine , the company announced on April 9.

The new delivery was previously announced in March and is valued in the "mid-double-digit million Euro range," according to a statement. Rheinmetall said that the new lot would be delivered sometime in 2024.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the company has already provided Ukraine with more than 100 Marder armored vehicles.

Earlier this year, Germany and Poland agreed to form an "armored vehicles coalition" to support Ukraine's defense capabilities. The initiative will officially begin operations on March 26 .

"More partners have already signed up. This is one of the most important coalitions," Kosiniak-Kamysz said at a press conference with his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, specifically naming the U.K., Italy, and Sweden.

Germany has become one of Ukraine's leading military donors , second only to the U.S. According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy , Germany has supplied Ukraine with 17.7 billion euros (around $19 billion) in military assistance as of January.

A drone attack allegedly targeted the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant's training center adjacent to the site, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on April 9, citing the plant's occupation administration.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant , the largest nuclear plant in Europe, has been under Russian occupation since March 2022. IAEA teams have been based at the facility on rotation since September 2022.

Throughout its occupation, the plant has been repeatedly disconnected from the Ukrainian power grid due to Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure. Russian troops have also used the plant as a platform to launch strikes at Nikopol, situated just across the Kakhovka Reservoir, and other Ukrainian settlements nearby.

The IAEA said on X that the reported explosion at the facility's training center was "consistent with the IAEA team's observations."

"No direct threat to nuclear safety this time, but the latest incident again underlines an extremely serious situation," said the organization's head, Rafael Grossi.

The plant reportedly suffered at least three direct strikes on April 7. After the alleged attacks, Russia claimed Ukraine was responsible. Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) said Ukraine was not involved .

Russia has initiated a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors set to take place on April 11 to discuss alleged attacks on the plant, Reuters reported, citing four unnamed diplomats.

Ukraine's nuclear energy agency Energoatom said on April 9 that Russia "upgraded its propaganda to another level," manipulating the IAEA's perspective and accusing Ukraine of security breaches at the plant.

Energoatom said that the only way to prevent nuclear and radiation emergencies is to comply with the IAEA's resolution, withdraw Russian troops and their equipment from the plant, demining nearby territories, and return control over the plant to the agency.

In March, the U.N. nuclear watchdog's Board of Governors passed a resolution demanding Russia to withdraw from Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant .

At least 54 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) have been executed by Russian soldiers, the head of the War Crimes Department in Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office, Yurii Belousov, said on April 9.

A total of 27 criminal investigations into the executions are underway, Belousov said on national television. Presumably, some of these investigations concern group executions.

There have been a number of reports recently about Russian soldiers killing Ukrainian POWs in the embattled parts of Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts .

The Prosecutor General’s Office on April 7 opened an investigation into a video that purportedly showed Russian troops shooting three captured and unarmed Ukrainian soldiers in Kherson Oblast .

Belousov confirmed that they were executed near Krynky , a village on the predominantly occupied part of Kherson Oblast east of the Dnipro River.

Prosecutors are investigating the involvement of the Russian command, "which is responsible for such actions" as well, Belousov said.

"We are talking not only about unit commanders but also about the highest military and political leadership. Because this is not a single case, but evidence of Russian policy," Belousov added.

As of March 18, Ukraine had collected evidence on over 128,000 victims of war crimes , according to Veronika Plotnikova, the head of the Coordinating Center for Support of Victims and Witnesses of the Prosecutor General's Office.
