This route for the Mumbai to Goa road trip is by far the simplest route to take. The road is simple, smooth, and straight with a four-lane road all throughout. Starting on the Mumbai Pune expressway for 94.1 km on the six-lane expressway, one would reach Pune in three hours. The Mumbai-Pune expressway merges into the NH4 along until the road reaches Belgaum. There is a sharp right-angled turn at the end of the expressway, which reads “Mumbai Pune Expressway ends here” indicating the beginning of the journey on the national highway.

Keep on National Highway 4 until you reach Sankeshwar.  The main milestones on this journey are Satara, Kolhapur , and Sankeshwar. One can also visit Rankala Lake, Panhala Fort, and the Jyotiba Temple on their way. The next stop on your Mumbai to Goa road trip should be Belgaum where you may also decide to have a night halt. Belgaum is famous for the Belgaum fort and the Bhimgad Wildlife sanctuary. The final stretch of this road is from Belgaum to Goa is a three-hour drive.

This route with its long and windy routes while is breathtaking in its scenic beauty is not the best for those that suffer from motion sickness.

Reaching Panvel from Mumbai is not difficult as it is a signal-free zip over a flyover. After Panvel, the drive reaches the NH-17, hence renamed the NH-66. As it is a commercially important route, the road has numerous hotels, restaurants, repair shops, and petrol pumps. Bird-lovers must surely stop at Karnala Bird Sanctuary, home to more than 150 bird species, in the taluk of Panvel. Further along, one would reach Pen, a historically important port city. Now it is a major center where huge Ganesha idols are made for worship.

Another popular stopover for travelers along the route is Chiplun, a distance of about 200 km from Panvel. This place is famous for its waterfalls, the Parshuram Temple, kokum, and the famous Ratnagiri mangoes. After that, the NH 66 leads you to Sindhudurg which was built by Hiroji Indalkar. After that, you reach Sawantwadi and after a drive along the ghats, travellers will finally reach their ultimate destination, Goa.

The town of Chiplun is a popular stopover point for eating stops during this drive and during the summer there are sellers all along the route who offer the Ratnagiri Alphonsos at the best rates.

Head South-East on Santacruz-Chembur Link road for 3.5 Kms and then take a right onto Bengaluru – Mumbai Highway for 1.3 Kms. Now turn right onto Bengaluru – Mumbai Highway / Eastern Flyway / Mumbai – Pune Highway and then merge onto Bengaluru – Mumbai / Mumbai – Pune Highway. Day 1: Mumbai to Goa (591 Kms)

• Leave from mumbai early in the around 6 AM so that you can reach Goa at aroung 6 PM. First day is going to be about reaching goa and resting. On the way to goa, we’ll be exploring a few places lying on the route.
• First break for the day is going to be Arctic Seasonal Waterfalls on Mumbai – Pune Highway located just 72 Kms ahead of Mumbai.
• 35 Kms ahead of Arctic Seasonal Waterfalls, you’ll arrive at Malavlli Hills where you can take a break for 10 minutes and enjoy the view.
• Our last stop on this Mumbai to Goa route will be Pashan Lake in Pune. Pashan Lake is about 50 Kms ahead of Malavli Hills. Take a 20 minutes break here and continue your ride towards Goa.

MUMBAI GOA ROAD TRIP – THE COASTAL ROUTE

Road trips are fun to explore new places. India encompasses numerous spots across different parts throughout the country. So, it doesn’t matter which part of the country one lives in, there is always an option of planning a road trip in India.

We did a 10 days motorcycle road trip from Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai via the Coastal Route traversing through scenic seaside villages with endless stretches overlooking the sea. Ride on the sea with your vehicle loaded on a ferry and feel the sea breeze showering you with salted kisses. The coastal route is worth an experience.

This route is less explored as it takes much more time than the other two popular routes of Mumbai Goa Highway (NH66) and Mumbai-Pune-Bangalore Highway (NH4). If you are a traveller and like to roam the roads just like us, this route is for you.

In this article, we will guide you through the coastal route and share our experiences which can help you plan this beautiful road trip.

Table of Contents

DAY 1 – MUMBAI TO HARIHARESHWAR

Route – Mumbai~Kashid~Murud Janjira~Agardanda~Dighi~Harihareshwar (222 kms)

Ferry Point – Agardanda to Dighi Port. (From 8 am every one hour till 9:30 pm)

Our stay on day 1 was at Harihareshwar. You can also plan to finish your day at Shrivardhan which is around 20 kms before Harihareshwar.

Once you hit NH66, just before Karnala there are many breakfast options. We ate at Joshi Wadewale serving authentic Maharashtrian breakfast. Puneri misal is a must try.

Move ahead to Alibaug via Vadkhal junction on NH66. The coastal route begins from here. Skip the halt at Alibag as it can be easily explored any other day from Mumbai. Around 30 kms from Alibag and on the way towards Murud Janjira is Kashid Beach . There are lots of shacks with hammocks offering snacks, cold drinks, and coconut water. You can relax here for some time. 

If you are looking for a more secluded beach, then skip Kashid and ride 15 minutes further to Nandgaon Beach . A peaceful and silent place with clean water. Good place to relax in shade of the coconut trees. There are not many eateries here.  

We took our first ferry at 1:15pm from Agardanda jetty. It drops at Dighi Port situated on the bank of Rajpuri creek in 15 minutes. From here, Harihareshwar is 48 kms. Road from Dighi is under construction but still a manageable ride.

Sadguru Krupa Khanaval (7350380167) on Dighi road serves homemade meals at a reasonable price. We tried veg & non veg thali. Food was simple and tasty.

Harihareshwar Beach is a stretch of calm and serene waters with unpolluted cool breeze wafting along the sea-shore. After a long ride, this is a perfect place to spend the evening. Visit the 16th century historic Harihareshwar Temple located on the coast. It offers a great combination of natural beauty with spiritual enhancement.

DAY 2 – HARIHARESHWAR to GANPATIPULE

Route – Harihareshwar~Bagmandla~Vesvi~Harnai~Ladghar~Dabhol~Dhopave~Guhagar~Tavsal~ Jaigad~Ganpatipule (164 kms)

Ferry Point-   

• Bagmandla to Vesvi (From 7:30 am every 1 hour)
• Dabhol to Dhopave (From 6:45 am every 45 min)
• Tavsal to Jaigad (From 6:40 am every 1 hour)

Day 2 is all about ferry crossing. There are 3 ferries to cross. We took the first ferry at 10:30 am. We were late as we spent the morning doing photography at Harihareshwar.

After a 30 minutes ride, you reach Bagmandla Jetty . The ferry crosses the river Savitri and drops you to another side called Vesvi in 5-10 minutes. It saves you almost 30-40 kms of ride.

Once you reach Vesvi, you need to head towards Dabhol Jetty via Kelshi~Harnai~Murud~route. This is a wonderful stretch of internal village roads. There are many places where you would like to stop and take your time to admire the views and take photographs. Of course you should, as you are roaming the roads to enjoy the journey, aren’t you?

We took our 2nd ferry from Dabhol at 3:45 pm which dropped us at Dhopave in 10 minutes. From here, your next destination is Tavsal Jetty which is 50 kms away. And then, 22 kilometers more and you reach Ganpatipule.

We would like to share a small experience here. It was already 4:30 pm when we left for Tavsal. Our concern was whether we would be able to catch the 6:40 pm ferry. Missing this means waiting for another one hour. The roads were pretty good but narrow with a lot of hairpin turns and for miles we were the only souls to be seen. You can imagine the thrill of riding alone.

It was just when we were soaked in our aloneness, climbing the ghats we came across two young cyclists who were slowly pedaling their way up. I slowed down the bike and initiated a quick conversation. Cycling all the way from Mumbai they were also going to Goa. This was their first bicycle trip. They too were heading towards the jetty. I informed them about the ferry timings. Cheering them up I accelerated. We wish we could stop and listen to their on road experiences, but we did not want to miss the ferry.

We reached the jetty 15 minutes before time. There were not many passengers. We were waiting for the ferryman to allow us in. And when he did, I got up to start my motorcycle and unexpectedly the cyclists turned up just before the ferry was about to leave. And there we were, stretching ourselves and one of them sharing their experiences as the ferry started moving with the wind gently kissing our faces. Their story reflected courage and determination. It was a good feeling to meet these inspiring souls. 

After a 20 minutes of ferry ride, we reached Jaigad Jetty. Knowing we wouldn’t meet again, bidding them goodbye we parted our ways.

We reached Ganpatipule at 8:30 pm.

DAY 3 – GANPATIPULE to TARKARLI

Route – Ganpatipule~AareWare~Pawas~Devgad~Tarkarli (181 kms)

No more ferry crossing. Right till you reach Malvan, ride on this beautiful stretch with wonderful views of lush greens, clear, sparkling waters of pristine white beaches, and ancient colorful temples each of which has a unique story to tell.

Before you begin the ride, visit the 400 year old famous Ganpatipule Temple situated on the beach.  Around 1 km from the temple is Prachin Konkan Museum . This is an open air museum featuring sculptures depicting traditional konkan life and culture. A trip to Ganpatipule without visiting this is incomplete.

After a 30 minutes of ride, you will reach a combination of two beaches Aare & Ware which are located next to each other. The stretch is so breathtaking. Definitely a must halt. There is a certain freedom in finding a small piece of the world that belongs only to you, if only for a short time.

There are many places on this route where you would like to stop. Visit some villages on the route. Talk to the locals, fishermen. The people of Konkan are very helpful and humble.

Other places to explore enroute – Devgad & Kunkeshwar

We reached Malvan at 7:00 pm. Our stay was at Ghar Malvankarache (8600381490) – a homestay run by a humble family. They have budget friendly rooms which are clean and comfortable. But above all the food is just awesome. I tried Prawns Masala with Malvani Vade. It was simply delicious. Next day morning for breakfast, Archana aunty served us Ghavane with Cocunut chutney. Whenever I visit Malvan again, I am definitely going to eat here.

DAY 4 – EXPLORE MALVAN

A day is not enough to explore Malvan. Malvan is a kind of place that makes you want to stay on forever if possible – with the waves and the sands, the trees and the stars. But even if you are here for a day or two, you will take back something- if nothing else a snapshot of a unique seashell on a mesmerizing beach.

Take a leisurely walk through the villages, when sunlight filters in through the palms. You will pass women sorting dried fish outside their homes. Give them a smile and you will surely receive it back. This little Konkan town has a bustling jetty with a tangle of boats and roof tiled homes where the scent of wood smoke and aromas of fish curry drift into your memories.

Places you shouldn’t miss to see – Tarkarli Beach , Chiwla Beach , Deobagh Village & Sindhudurg Fort

If you love watersports, then indulge yourself in Scuba Diving , Dolphin Safari and other water activities held here. 

DAY 5 – TARKARLI to GOA

Route – Tarkarli~Vengurla~Shiroda~Goa (109 kms)

It was time to go GOA. We were excited.

As we were riding towards Vengurla past peeping palm trees, towards a turn I heard a voice which seemed familiar to me. I turned to see and it was just what we hadn’t expected. There they were: the two cyclists. We were happy to meet them once again. 

We used different modes of transport while roaming the roads but we could connect with each other the joy of enjoying the road trips. Road trips are full of surprises, isn’t it? Who knows, we could even meet in Goa.

Keep riding 50 kms till you reach Vengurla. Leisurely ride past the village in the shadow of the verdant plantations of cashewnuts, mango and coconut trees.

Around 3 km from the Vengurla market, Sagareshwar Beach is hidden away behind rows of tall casuarinas swaying in the wind. A small temple of Sagareshwara (Lord of the Sea) is located on the beach.

Located at the end of a winding hilly road and about a 45 minute ride from Sagareshwar is Shiroda Beach. A less explored and virgin region of the Konkan, Shiroda beach is carpeted with silvery white sands, cool blue waters and gentle sea breeze.

Other places to explore enroute – Nivati Beach , Redi Beach & Sawantwadi

We reached Goa at 4 pm. Our stay was in Anjuna, North Goa. Having checked in our guest house and freshening up, we spent the evening at Vagator Beach. If you are a party going person; then this is definitely the place for you with rave parties going till the wee hours of night. We somehow managed to find our small corner of happiness on this crowded beach

DAY 6, 7 & 8 – GOA, GOA & ONLY GOA

Hurray!! Finally in Goa. Yes, the much awaited destination. You have to plan these 3 days well depending on where you wish to stay between North & South Goa. These will again depend on your travel taste and what you want to experience in Goa. For peace and solitude, and offbeat experiences, head to South Goa.

We will share in short how we spent our 3 days in Goa –

Day 1 – We explored places which were near our guest house from Anjuna. Overall distance covered 40 kms exploring Baga beach, Sinquerim Fort, Reis Magos Fort, Fontainhas & Chapora. You must try Fruit Salad with Ice Cream at Scarlet Juice Centre, Chapora.

Day 2 – This day we rode 85 kms to South Goa to experience kayaking in the backwaters of Cola Beach . Cola beach is one of those offbeat destinations, where the beautiful blue lagoon meets the unstoppable wave of the Arabian sea.

You can rent a kayak for 30 minutes to surf through the backwater at Rs 150 only.

On your way back to North Goa, if you are able to reach before dusk take the route through Parra Road .  Lined with palm trees and fields on both sides, end your day watching the magical sunset.

Day 3 – An impulsive decision and we were riding towards Ribandar Jetty from where a ferry (free of cost) would take us to Chorao Island . Having done with beaches we wanted to explore something different. It seemed we had escaped into a sleepily quaint, laid-back and picturesque village from a different era with its Portuguese-styled manors and churches. It is also home to the offbeat Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary .

Once done with the island, we headed straight towards Morjim Beach to have lunch at Smoke Fish Cafe (8975557019) The restaurant is run by a family on the terrace serving authentic Goan homemade cuisine. One of the best foods we had in Goa.

We ended our last day shopping at Anjuna Flea Market and then taking a quiet walk on Anjuna Beach retrospecting on our journey from day one. This road trip had been one of the best things in life we had experienced.

Two more days on the road still…. The journey was not over yet.

DAY 9 – GOA to MURUD (DAPOLI)

Route – Goa~Kankavli~Chiplun~Khed~Dapoli~Murud (392 kms)

This was a long ride for us. Almost did 400 kms. We took NH66, the four lane Mumbai-Goa highway till Khed and then took a diversion towards Dapoli.

When we had halted at Sangameshwar for lunch, we decided not to stay in any of the hotels on the highway but instead chose to ride a few extra kilometers and stay on the beach. It was as if the sea was calling us back to the coastal route. So I called Aviraj Niwas, a homestay at Murud Beach in Dapoli where I had stayed earlier and immediately booked a room.

The highway is in good condition from Goa to Kankavli and you will enjoy riding on this four lane highway cruising at 60 kmph. After Lanja the road turns into a two lane. And you have to ride carefully as the road widening work is in progress and there are diversions every few meters.

These bumpy roads were tiring for both of us. But as soon as we left the highway and took a diversion to Dapoli we felt relief. We were once again riding on the coastal route. The sky at the sunset formed a perfect backdrop for a ride along the winding road. And in no time the moon slowly climbed up and casted its silvery reflection.

DAY 10 – MURUD (DAPOLI) to MUMBAI

Route – Murud~Dapoli~Mandangad~Tol Phata~Mangaon~Mumbai (250 kms)

Tired, but still we got up early in the morning as we had to go to Murud Beach for Dolphin Safari. We decided on this at dinner last night while talking to our host. He assured us that dolphins are guaranteed to be seen. So we thought of taking a chance. We did see a few of them after a long wait in the middle of the sea. The ferryman was kind enough not to drop us at shore without the sighting of dolphins.

Murud is a small town with a scenic and long stretch of beach dotted with crab holes and swaying palms. It also has many beach resorts situated amidst coconut plantations.

Olive Ridley Sea Turtles have also been spotted here

We explored a new route for our last day on the road. From Dapoli market, we took a left turn towards Mandangad . It took us to Mangaon on NH66 through internal village roads.

Returning home after being 10 days on the road was a bit depressing. I remembered one of John Denver’s compositions, ‘’ Hey, it’s good to be back home again”. 

This homecoming was quite different from all the others I’ve had in my life. Coming home conjures up numerous emotions, and we were returning home with pleasant memories.

Drive From Mumbai To Goa: Explore The Best Coastal Route

Are you planning a drive from Mumbai to Goa? Read on!

The Konkan Coast is a stunning region sandwiched between the Western ghats that run along the western edge of the Indian western coast and the Arabian sea. It stretches from the South of Mumbai all the way down to Goa, beyond which the coastal area is referred to as the Malabar coast. 

Which Mumbai to Goa route is the best?

Quick facts: It’s 600 kms (373 miles) and about a 13 hour drive from Mumbai to Goa.

The scenic way: Stretching along the Arabian Sea, the NH66 route takes you through a blend of coastal towns, lush forests, and historic sites. This is the best route to get from Mumbai to Goa.

The ultimate coastal route: You can take NH66 part of the way and also head further west off of NH 66 onto SH 4 which will bring you the best sea views but also adds hours to your trip. If you’re breaking up the drive over a 3-6 day itinerary then consider adding SH 4 into your route.

The inland route: You can also take NH48 further inland. But it’s not really quicker than NH66 and isn’t as picturesque.

Once you arrive in Goa, there’s so many amazing places to stay in both North and South Goa .

Mumbai to Goa 2-Day Drive: The Expressway Route

This itinerary breaks up the 13-hour drive to Goa into 2 days along NH66 with a stop in Mahabaleshwar or Harihareshwar.

Day 1: Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar

Driving distance: 230 kms, ~5.5hrs Route: Via NH 66 or NH66 & SH72

Mahabaleshwar is one of the most famous hill stations in Western India. Its highest point is at 1,439m or 4,721 ft above sea level. In addition to some stunning views of the Sahyadri mountains, the Mahabaleshwar area is famous for its strawberries. 85% of India’s strawberry production happens here.

Be sure to check out a strawberry farm and try the strawberry cream. I recommend Mapro Garden.

There are a couple hill viewpoints worth a look: Wilson Point and Elphinstone Point.

Mahabaleshwar, and its sister town Panchgani, offer many great options for resorts and restaurants.

✨ Alternative option: Mumbai to Harihareshwar

Driving distance: 200kms, ~5 hours Route: via NH 66

Instead of Mahabaleshwar, if you are seeking beaches over mountain towns, drive to Harihareshwar for Day 1. It’s a similar distance and driving time.

If you opt for Harihareshwar, don’t miss Harihareshwar Beach framed by towering palm trees. Explore nearby attractions like Kalbhairav Temple and Savitri River Estuary .

📍Where to stay in Harihareshwar: Meritas Seawind Beach Resort, Shrivardhan

Day 2: Mahabaleshwar to Goa

Driving distance: 390 kms, ~8hrs Route: Via NH66 or SH72 & NH66 or via NH48

The second day will involve a drive down the expressway to Goa. Lunch stop options include Satara, Chiplun, or the many dhabas you will cross along the way.

If you opted to stop at Harihareshwar instead of Mahabaleshwar the driving distance is 405kms, ~9hrs for the route via NH66 .

Mumbai to Goa 4-Day Drive: The Coastal Route

A couple more days will allow you to explore a bit more of the coast by heading west from NH66 towards the coast. This will give you the opportunity of exploring some untouched villages and beaches along the coast while driving along some beautiful coastal roads along the sea cliffs. 

Day 1: Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar or Wai

You can drive from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar, the same as day 1 above, or venture a little further west to Wai.

✨ Alternative option: If you’re looking for something a bit less commercial, Wai is a village set at the bottom of the hill range that leads to Mahabaleshwar. Wai, and its adjoining villages, set on the banks of the river Krishna, offers you a glimpse of village life in India. It has some stunning temples set along the river. 

If you opt to visit Wai, check out the Ganpati Temple. Also visit nearby Menawali Wes to see the Nana Fadnavis Wada Temple. Be sure to stop at Dhom Lake where you can take a boat ride if you have time.

📍 Where to stay in Wai: Gandharva Resort

Day 2: Mahabaleshwar to Dapoli

Driving Distance: 100 kms, ~3 hours Route: Via SH72 or SH72 & NH66

After spending the morning in Mahabaleshwar, take the afternoon to drive down to Dapoli, which will give you access to the beautiful coastal villages of Harnai, Murud, Ladghar and Tamstirth. 

Explore the beaches and the coastal route between Harnai and Dabhol , specifically the Tamarstirth beach is stunning.

If you’re staying at The Fern Samali Resort, they organize forest, bird watching walks in the morning offering you an insight into the the flora and fauna of the area.

📍Where to stay in Dapoli:

There are 3 route options for the drive: Option 1: via NH66 Driving distance: 146 kms, ~3.5 hours Option 2: via Dapoli-Dabhol road (coastal routes involves 1 ferry) Driving distance: 121 kms, ~3h 45 mins

Option 3: via Dapoli-Dabhol road & SH4 (coastal routes involves 2 ferries) Driving distance: 121 kms, ~3h 45 mins

The coastal route, while spectacularly more beautiful, has bad patches and involves ferry transport across bays in Dabhol and Jaigad. The wait time for the ferry is a wild card as it could take close to an hour.

The coastal route will involve many stunning beaches and viewpoints along the way, where you can stop for a refreshing break. Some places to check out include Kolthare Beach, Anjanvel Lighthouse, Palshet Beach, Hedavi Beach, Jaigad Fort, Malgund Beach.

Goa is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The state stretches about 150 kms along the coast, and is littered with spectacular beaches with shacks, top notch restaurants, resorts, nightlife and casinos. You can stay in North or South Goa depending on how you’re looking to spend your time in the area.

If you’re taking the coastal route via SH4, check out Ratnadurg Fort or Tondavali Beach along the way. You can also stop at Guhagar , Ratnagiri , or Vengurla (which the 6-day itinerary below gives options for).

For idyllic, less crowded beaches and beachfront resorts, head to the south of Goa. Areas to explore: Benaulim, Colva, Cavelossim, Patnem, Canacona, Varca, Madgaon, Palolem, Agonda.

Mumbai to Goa 6-Day Drive: The Leisurely Konkan Coast Journey

If you are doing a 6 day trip, you could also consider 2 days in Dapoli or adding Guhagar & Vengurla as stops to the 4 day itinerary for a more relaxed experience.

How many days should I spend driving between Mumbai to Goa?

The stretch south of Mumbai, all the way down to Goa, is peppered with idyllic beaches, hill stations and lakes perfect for stopping by to enjoy some sunshine or staying at a beachside resort for a longer retreat. 

A straight shot drive from Mumbai to Goa takes about 11-13 hours, with the choice of two expressways. So, you can do the drive in 1-2 days. But if you want to experience the hidden beauty the Konkan Coast has to offer I recommend at least 4-5 days. If you have the time, 6-7 days would be the ultimate Konkan Coast road trip.

How are the roads between Goa and Mumbai?

NH 66 or the Goa-Mumbai highway and NH 48 which is the Mumbai-BLR highway are both expressways (2 lanes each way). Regardless of what route you take you will also pass through the Mumbai-Pune expressway which is one of the fastest road in the country with most stretches having 8 lanes.

If you venture onto SH4 for a more scenic coastal drive, it gets patchy in places and requires bay crossings via ferries in a couple spots.

What is the best way to travel from Mumbai to Goa?

If you are looking for the quickest and easiest way, there are frequent flights between the two cities. It’s only a 1 hour and 20 minute flight. You can fly into either GOI or GOX for your trip to Goa .

But driving is another great option. You can drive all 13 hours in 1 day along NH 66, if you’re looking to get there quickly. If you have time on your hands, I recommend making a road trip out of it and stopping overnight in small towns and enjoying beautiful beaches along the way.

Mumbai to Goa: what to expect on your roadtrip right now

For a family that loves to travel, and enjoys long summer breaks, staying cooped in was getting difficult. We were getting onto each others' nerves. We developed a love-hate relationship with our kids—depending on the time of day we were at—and that's when we decided that they needed a break and so did we. After four months and 27 days of lockdown, of waiting for the world to open, we finally decided to be brave and venture out of our suburb in Mumbai. We were looking for a place from where we could work for a month. The criteria: easy to get to, where the pandemic is largely in control, and a place not too crowded. After all the evaluation and plodded by our happy memories from previous trips, we settled on Goa.

The planning

We started looking for a place. We planned to stay for a long time, so the place and accommodation had to be right. Villa identified, we moved on to secure the e-pass for the travel. We applied online, three days before travel and within 24 hours, our balloon of excitement burst. Our application had been rejected.

We never anticipated that, so we moved our plans by two weeks and went back with a better checklist.

Apply for an e-pass: We applied online again through the Maharashtra Police website . You need to upload ID details of everyone travelling, the details of the car, the reason for travel and a doctor's certificate stating that the travellers are in good health. The second time, we applied on the 2 August for travel on the 15 August. This time, we received an approved e-pass within 24 hours.

Book villa: We chose to stay around Assagao. We wanted good Wi-Fi, a pool, and an area for our son to run around. But the biggest criteria was the need for limited interaction with people. We found this beautiful self-contained villa from Lohono Stays.

COVID tests: Two options available. Get tested for COVID, carry a report no more than 48hrs old or reach Goa and self-quarantine for 14 days (or till you get tested and have an all-clear report). We all chose to get tested for COVID before we left. We booked with Suburban Diagnostics —they have a drive-through setup at Hotel Executive Enclave at Bandra West. We went at our allotted time, we had a 20min wait. When it was our turn—they asked for our names and in two minutes, a person in a full PPE kit arrived with our paperwork and labelled bottles and did a swab test one us one by one. We ended up gagging and sneezing because the guy taking the test poked the stick. But the saving grace, it took a minute each and we didn't step out of the car. They didn't give us a receipt, but sent an email on the registered ID.  The next day, we were told the reports would be shared on Saturday—that got us worried as our e-pass was for Saturday. We called on the listed number and the lady reassured us that the report would be shared with us within 36 hours. We received the report via email within 24 hours.

Prep the car: Check the air pressure, fuel up. We drove down in a Honda CRV. It was pouring and water had filled up at a few places so a car with a higher clearance is advisable for this journey.

Mumbai to Goa: The journey

The time had come, our bags were packed. Excitement in the air, my 7-year-old son, Angad was carrying his bag full of toys and my 12-year-old, Ahaana, with her playlists, ready for 10 hours. And our cook didi, ready with her three picnic baskets of food. We didn't want to stop on the way at any restaurant so we overcompensated on the food. Three baskets filled with sandwiches, idlis, parathas and theplas, one cooler bag with cold drinks and coffee and flasks with chai. I'm a Sikh and we are used to starting every journey with a "Bole Sohnehaal-sat sri akal" ('Blessed is the person who says... True is the Great Timeless One). With God's blessings, we loaded up and left at 5.45am and within 10mins of us leaving, it started to rain cats and dogs!

Traffic and roads

There was very limited traffic so we didn't have any delays. The ghats were filled with trucks but there were very few vehicles beyond the trucks so we had a quick drive. And barring some patches of broken roads in Mumbai that we had to avoid, once outside of the city,  the majority of the roads were great, and we enjoyed the drive. We took the Pune-Bengaluru Highway (NH-48). At one point, Google recommended a detour, off the highway. It looked like a small turn off but we put our faith in the map and went with the suggested shorter route. It was the most scenic, stunning journey for us through Aajra, Aamboli, Sawantwadi. It isn't a four-lane highway, not even a clear two lanes at some places. But absolutely green, with zero bumps in the road—a beautiful drive. Totally recommended. At the end of this three-hour drive, for about 20mins, the road was totally broken and bumpy.

There were petrol pumps across the journey and 80% of them were open. But the same wasn't the case with restaurants, hotels or food courts—nothing was open when we left the city and on the way too, very few were open. We have had an extremely bad experience with the loos at the food courts: wet, extremely bad hygiene, smell that would make you retch. So we chose to stop at an HPCL petrol pump which was slightly bigger and had restrooms. The staff was all wearing masks and were very courteous and welcoming. The loos were small but clean. We refuelled and used the loos at this point. Post refueling we just stayed parked in the same compound and stretched our legs and had tea and coffee that we had carried. We just took this one 25min stop and ate on the way, in the car. The e-pass validity was till 7pm and we wanted to be sure that we had the buffer of an hour or two, in case of any issue we might face.

We were stopped four times in Maharashtra to check for the e-pass. The first time, it was raining so we just put up the e-pass on the window and the person checking was kind enough to read on that and wave us through. They were checking the cars—waving through the ones with the valid passes and sending the others to a queue to fill some paperwork. At every checkpoint, there were 10-12 cars that had pulled over to fill up these forms. All the personnel checking were aware of the e-pass system and the paperwork and were quick to check. At each point, we spent approximately 2-3 mins.

At Amboli, there was a makeshift checkpost, where the policeman asked us to get down and show our papers. When we went there, the people saw our e-pass and sent us back saying that people with a pass didn't need to report or fill any form. I must commend the government authorities on the system—everyone was following protocol, ensuring speed and ease for the travellers.

In addition to the checks, we crossed six toll booths. Each time there were barely 2-3 vehicles ahead. We had loaded up our FASTag so we could drive through the first two with no stopping. For the last two tolls, the FASTag didn't work and we had to pay cash. (Listing out the amounts, in case you need to pay cash and don't want to take currency back from the booth: Rs35, Rs95, Rs65, Rs150, Rs75, RS75. The last one is at the Maharashtra-Karnataka border.

The last checkpoint was for the entry to Goa, to check for COVID. This was a chaotic and the least organised part of the checks. They had two counters manned by 12-15 people, each with multiple passengers. Not everyone was wearing a mask or rather, had them pulled down under the nose. There were no separate queues for people who had taken the COVID test versus those who were volunteering to self-quarantine. The team behind the counter wasn't aware of the differences. We had print-outs of the COVID test results, so once our turn came, they saw papers, asked us if we had anything else to submit, kept all printouts and let us pass. Those who didn't have test results were being asked to fill a form and get a stamp on the hands. This stop was our longest stop, which took us 35 minutes. But it was also our last stop.

From the last checkpoint, we had another 40mins to our villa in Assagao. While suddenly, there were many two-wheelers on the road, the traffic was still mellow. With all the pitstops and the checks, we went from door to door in 10 hours and 10 mins.

Goa, finally

At this point, Goa is completely lush and green and with no tourists around, it has been a great place to go out for walks and on the beach. There is barely anyone around, and even the ones who are venturing out are maintaining distance. In our area, supermarkets are open, select restaurants are open and delivering, although delivery does stop earlier than usual. There is something in the air that makes me want to slow down, be lazy, stop and smell the roses, sit by the waves and watch the sun set, have a drink, relish a platter of shrimp... The list is endless, but we have a month.

Also called Shahpura, which means 'town of Shah’, this fort is located at northern Goa, overlooking the Vagator Beach. Dudhsagar Falls of Goa is a majestic waterfall where the white water gushing through the steep and vertical face of the mountain portrays a cascading effect. Catherine was known to be a spiritual pathfinder and raise her voice against the oppression of the Christians under the rule of Roman emperor Maxentius. She was so strong and logical with her arguments that the king himself was incapable of countering them and has a then he formed a committee of 50 philosophers to debate her ideas.However, even the assembly conceded defeat in front of her and confessed Christianity as their belief. Out of anger, the king burnt the philosophers alive and sentenced st.catherine to prison. Catherine did not give up, and she was succeeded in converting not only the jailers but also the king's wife. It is believed that she showed the path of Christianity to 200 people. Even when she was facing the worse condition of her life, she continued to stretch the word of Jesus. She was honoured with the title of"patroness of the wheel-wrights" because it is believed then when she was fastened to a spiked wheel as it was mentioned in her death sentence the wheel broke and she was left uninjured. And when she was finally beheaded, it is said that angle took her remains and laid them to rest atop Mount Sinai. When you visit the Se Cathedral, you can witness the Saint Catherine ornaments, a crown portraying her royal birth and has a book in her hands, which signifies her sound knowledge as she points a spiked wheel, which reveals her martyrdom.Se Cathedral HistoryThe Cathedral is devoted to St. Catherine of Alexandria, it is said that it was built to celebrate the victory of the Portuguese ruler Alfonso Albuquerque who destroyed the Muslim army and took ownership of the city of Goa. Consequently, it is also called St. Catherine's' Cathedral. In 1953, the Cathedral was presented with "The Golden Rose" by Venerable Pope Pius XII. It is a gold ornament, which the Popes of the Catholic Church have traditionally favoured and given as a symbol of devotion or affection.You can witness it as it is placed on the tomb of St. Francis Xavier. It was approved by Governor George Cabral to be spread in 1552 on the remains of an earlier structure. The formation of the church began in 1562. The church was completed in 1619 and was consecrated in 1640.  It is a perfect place to experience a blend of peace and tranquillity. You will be filled with positivity when you will visit this sacred place.The architecture of Se Cathedral  The architecture of Se Cathedral is awe-inspiring and elegant. The architectural style is a blend of Gothic elements and typical Portuguese style, or you can say that the architecture style of the Se Cathedral is Portuguese-Manueline. There were two different techniques that were opted to make the church. The exterior was made in Tuscan style and the interior has been built in and Corinthian style. With dimensions of 250 feet long and 181 feet wide, this church has a  delightfully decorated entrance that measures around 115 feet in height. The church is amazingly decorated, yet the style is intriguing and simple. The Cathedral has been built on an elevated base of laterite, which is covered with the thick lime plaster.You can also see the bell tower which is located on the southern side of the façade. The building of the church is rectangular on the plan but has a cruciform layout in the interior. The main altar is devoted to Catherine of Alexandria, and you can also see several old paintings on either side of it. You can also see the Chapel, which is known as the Cross of Miracles, it is believed that there was an image of Christ that was said to have appeared in 1619.

Generally speaking, December and January are the best and the busiest times to visit Goa. Goa shines in a different light filled with the hustle bustle of locals and tourists. If you are planning to visit Goa during these months, be sure to plan ahead and book in advance. If you are the kind of person who prefers solitude, you may want to hit the road between February and June or October and November. Goa is the cheapest during the monsoons so that could also be an option.

Places To Eat In Goa

Goan cuisine is one of the best fusion cuisines I have encountered. The perfect blend of chilies, coconut, rice, and other spices are mouthwatering. There is a famous saying in Konkan “Prodham Bhookt, magi mookt” which roughly translates to “You cannot think wisely until you are well fed”. Some of the famous places where you can get local delicacies are Starlight which serves a delectable Fish Thali. It is also recommended to eat at Laxmi Family restaurant for a filling experience. Crab curry and grilled crabs with some local authentic spices.

Goa is about 600 kilometers from Mumbai and it takes about 11 hours to reach if you drive without stopping.

From Mumbai, take the Mumbai Pune Highway. Once you have exited that highway, continue with the Bengaluru-Mumbai Highway for another 500 kilometers. Continue with NH48, AH47, NH748 to Khanapur. The entire route looks like

Mumbai--Lonavala--Kapurhol--Khandala--Satara--Kasegaon--Kagal--Belgaum-Akheti--Codli--Bandoli, Goa.

The journey from Mumbai to Goa offers multiple places to fulfil your quest for hunger and gives you ample opportunities to enjoy nature and even take a night break if needed.

Indian and continental food is available at multiple restaurants and dhabas on the way. You will never be far away from an eatery. Here are a couple of good, well-known places to have a bite.

Grand Island : While you will find some activities somewhere, Grand Island is the culmination of all. Activities such as diving and even fishing are done here. The “Suzy” wreck and the “Davy Jones Locker” are two places which are especially popular. Divers love these sites. What better than to end the day by eating what you have caught while fishing.

Aguada Fort: This ancient fort has been standing through ages and has seen the test of times. It was built in 1612 and still stands strong. The architecture gives a good glimpse of the Portuguese style of built and boasts some amazing views of goa.

Bom Jesus Basilica : This central landmark is one of the most important places to visit in Goa. Here, the incorrupt body of St Francis Xavier is kept. There is also a gallery of modern art in the Basilica.

Club Cubana: “Nightclub in the Sky” as it is well known as, is located in a remote location in North Goa.  It is on the top of Arpora Hill. One of the great attractions for party people, you might be able to find your rhythm here. Although a nightclub, it has some restrictions. It is open only from October to April. It usually caters to couples. Stag entries are not preferred. Ladies, on the other hand, are most welcome.

Flea Markets: Goa has some famous flea markets. A couple of them include the Wednesday afternoon Anjuna market and the Saturday night market. These are great places to shop and test your bargaining skills.

Dona Paula: This former village is now a tourist destination. The National Institute of Oceanography is located here.

Sunburn Festival : It has a mix of some of the best artists perform of some great food and amazing ambience.

Casino : This unique casino is located on a yacht in River Mandovi. You will be thrilled by the games and the environment. Most of the international games can be found here.

If you are the kind of person who prefers solitude, you may want to hit the road between February and June or October and November. Goa is the cheapest during the monsoons so that could also be an option. If you are travelling by car, make sure your car is properly serviced. Another point to consider is to keep a copy of the route with you, in case weak internet connectivity renders you without an online map.

Charge your mobile phones properly and get a good night sleep before the journey. Keep your tire pressure optimum and make sure your stepney is fine. A handy thing to know would be how to fix small car problems such as punctures and an overheated engine.

Ideally, the drive from Mumbai to Goa does not require an overnight stay but it also depends on the time of the day when you leave and if you want to have halts on the way. One good place to halt is Chiplun. It has some good resorts. If you do not prefer Chiplun, you may also halt at Ratnagiri which has some good, clean hotels.

Mobile Connectivity

You will not have any problems with mobile connectivity on the route and in Goa. It has multiple service providers and being a tourist attraction, these facilities are up to date.

There are multiple ATMs on the way as well as in Goa. Having said that, keeping some cash as a reserve is always better.

Mumbai Goa route is very frequently used. Hence, there are multiple stops where you can find mechanics. But, before starting the journey, make sure your car is in a well-maintained condition.

Medical Facilities

Medical facilities are also readily available on the way as well as in Goa. Some of the famous hospitals include Manipal Hospital, and Redkar Hospital and Research Center.

The under-construction Mumbai-Goa Highway is a 471-km four-lane highway that connects Panvel in Navi Mumbai to Goa. This will be a Greenfield development that will include access-controlled facilities. This is being developed along the lines of the Los Angeles-San Francisco Road. It is part of the National Highway-66 (NH66) that is 1,608 km long and ends at Cape Comorin in Kanyakumari , Tamil Nadu , after passing through Maharashtra , Goa , Karnataka and Kerala .

Alternatively, they can travel by train from New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) up to Madgaon Railway Station (MAO) or Thivim Railway Station (THVM) which are both found in Goa. There are several trains such as Rajdhani Express and Goa Sampark Kranti Express that ply between Delhi and Goa. The journey by train takes around 12-14 hours.

Bangalore-Goa road trip is also one of the highly preferred means of transportation among tourists. For this type of a journey, there are many options available such as numerous bus services or hiring private cabs for transport purposes. The total distance separating the two cities is approximately 560 kilometers and again, this will depend on traffic snarl-ups experienced as well as the chosen route, taking around ten-twelve hours overland.

Mumbai-Goa Highway: Completion Status, Timeline, Travel Time Reduction & More; All You Need To Know

The Mumbai Goa Highway, also known as NH 66, has reached its final stage after a long way of development that continued for 10 years. The Central Government recently declared that the currently underway development of the highway, which actually started in 2011, is anticipated to be completed with its first lane by May 2023.

After being interrupted by several issues in the past, it is reaching closer to its finish line. The project will improve commuters’ safety by decreasing injuries and increasing tourism in India’s western coastal towns and regions, in addition to cutting the travel time between the two cities to six hours.

Mumbai-Goa Highway Is Soon To Be Functional

With 67 per cent of the route already completed, work on four places, namely, Parshuram Ghat-Adavali, Indapur-Vadpale,  Adavali-Sangameshwar, and Sangameshwar to Lanja, is still under progress. The construction of this highway was long and with many hurdles.

Currently, it takes around 13 hours to travel from Mumbai to Goa. The journey will take only five to six hours once the Mumbai-Goa Highway project is finished.

It is anticipated that the travel time between Delhi and Goa will be reduced by 15 hours once the two projects are finished.  A journey that currently takes 35 hours could be completed in 20 hours.

The Connectivity Of The Highway

The Goa-Mumbai Highway, which starts in Panvel and runs via Mangaon, Pen, Khed, Poladpur, Ratnagiri, Lanja, Sangameshwar, Rajapur, Kudal, Mahad, Sawantwadi, Kankavli, Panaji, Chiplun, Canacona, and Margao, would connect the key cities and towns along the country’s western coast.

The highway continues to the coastal regions of South India and connects important States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kanyakumari at last.

Estimated Date Of Completion

Eleven phases make up the building of the Mumbai–Goa Highway. Earlier in May 2022, Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, asserted that the project would be completed within a year. The newly announced date of completion is May 2023.
