Wrangling your friends, family, and gear for a beach day can be stressful, but it’s always worth it once you kick back with your feet in the sand. To eliminate the cumbersome part of your beach journey, we recommend packing travel-friendly backpack beach chairs that free up your hands.

We headed to the shores to test out 12 backpack beach chairs from trusted brands like Tommy Bahama, Life Is Good, and Ostrich, judging the comfort, durability, stability, and, most importantly, portability of each. From the minute we left our houses with the chairs, we paid close attention to how comfortable they were to carry, set up, sit in, and break down after a full day of lounging oceanside. Whether you’re looking for a beach chair for napping, reading a book, or storing all of your favorite beach accessories, we found the best backpack beach chairs for your outdoor lounging.

Best Overall

Tommy bahama backpack beach chair.

  • Portability 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

Weighing just under 8 pounds, this chair is lightweight and easy to carry for long distances thanks to padded backpack straps and handles.

It takes some extra effort to fold and unfold the chair.

Tommy Bahama is the ultimate brand to get you beach ready in no time, and its backpack beach chair didn’t disappoint. Weighing just under 8 pounds, the chair is ideal for carrying long distances since it’s made with a lightweight, rustproof aluminum frame and a breathable polyester fabric seat. The adjustable backpack straps are lightly padded, and while the folded-up frame is slightly noticeable while walking, it wasn’t uncomfortable or painful. One of the best parts of this backpack chair is that it comes with an insulated cooler pocket on the back so you can easily pack snacks and drinks in ice without having to bring another bag. And there's an additional pocket below the cooler for your book or other items that need to stay dry.

There is a slight learning curve to unfolding and folding up the chair, but once you do it once or twice, it gets easier. Be sure to listen and feel for the locks clicking in place so you can start enjoying one of the five reclining options and comfy detachable headrest without falling over in the chair.

Best Headrest

Rio folding beach chair.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5

The plush headrest can be adjusted up or down for a customized fit.

There is a slight learning curve to opening up the chair at first.

The Rio Beach Folding Chair takes comfort to a whole new level thanks to its removable and adjustable headrest pillow. The headrest can be adjusted via velcro straps so you can tailor it to whichever of the four reclining positions you’re in. There is a lace-up suspension system holding the polyester seat to the aluminum frame so the fabric molds around the body for a supportive yet cushy feel that we love. The adjustable backpack straps have generous padding, and they help to evenly distribute the weight of the nearly 8-pound beach chair, which is especially helpful if you’re carrying it with items like a beach towel or drinks packed in the large back pocket. The tilt-lock bracket helps keep the chair feeling stable no matter the position you’re resting in, but it is slightly difficult to click into place at first.

The Details: 44.7 x 25. 5 x 26.5 inches | 7.84 pounds | 4 reclining positions

Best Storage

Homevative folding backpack beach chair.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

The chair has plenty of pockets for packing beach accessories without needing another bag.

It sits about 16 inches off the ground, so this chair might be too tall for an outdoor concert.

Schlepping gear to your favorite beach can be difficult. The Homevative backpack beach chair mitigates this beautifully with plenty of pockets for all of your beach essentials so you can show up to the sand hands-free. The chair has two large zippered pockets in the back (one is even insulated for keeping snacks and drinks cool) and a little caddy that hangs off of the armrest that has a velcro pocket and a drink holder. Even if you pack the pockets full of beach gear, the chair is extremely lightweight and the padded straps are adjustable for a customized fit. We love that it has suspension laces going up both sides to give it a slightly bouncy feel but is still supportive. There are five comfortable reclining positions, with the option to lay the chair completely flat for that glorious mid-afternoon beach nap. One thing to note is that this beach chair sits about 16 inches above the ground, so if you’re planning to take it to an outdoor concert with chair height restrictions, you’ll want to double-check to make sure it’s allowed.

The Details: 17 x 25 x 33 inches | 8.33 pounds | 5 reclining positions | Insulated cooler pouch

Best with Face Hole

Ostrich on your back beach chair.

  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

The padded headrest lifts up to reveal a face cavity with even more padding for laying on your stomach comfortably.

It was a little difficult to figure out how to recline the seat at first.

This beach chair from Ostrich has a padded headrest that is super comfortable for sitting upright, and when you lift it up, it reveals a face hole with padding around the cavity, similar to a massage table. When we wanted to take a break from napping to enjoy a beach read, the two arm holes were perfect for accessing the space below. The only downside is that there isn’t any leg support so you may want to have a cooler or use something to prop up your legs for a more comfortable resting position. We do also love the deluxe version of this chair , which includes a footrest but has an over-the-shoulder strap rather than a backpack build. With four other recline angles to use, the On Your Back Chair has various comfortable positions besides facing down, but we would have appreciated instructions on how to use the armrests to recline since it wasn’t very intuitive. Still, this chair won us over with backpack straps that are adjustable and very padded, making it extremely comfortable to carry despite its heavier weight. Note that there isn’t any storage beside the fabric cup holder, so you may need to bring another beach bag for supplies.

The Details: 24 x 26.4 x 33.85 inches | 10.2 pounds | 5 reclining positions | Face cushion

Best Portability

Pacific breeze lounger.

The folding mat chairs are super cushioned and comfortable to lounge in while laying down or sitting upright.

The backpack straps could have been a bit more comfortable.

Ultra lightweight and easy to store, these folding mat lounge chairs from Pacific Breeze only weigh 6 pounds and come in a set of two, making them perfect for the laid-back beachgoer . While these don’t have the same structured frame as a traditional beach chair, the padding is thick and plush so you won’t feel the ground when you sit on the mat. Plus, the back of the chair has a frame that left us feeling plenty supported when sitting upright. This is the ultimate beach chair for naps; the backing can lay flat so it’s like you’re bringing a bed to the beach. And when you’re ready to head home, the Pacific Breeze Lounger easily folds up into a compact rectangle, and the backpack straps are simple to adjust and toss over your shoulders. We didn’t find the lightly padded straps to be the most comfortable, but since the chair is virtually weightless, the slight discomfort wasn’t a huge inconvenience.

The Details: 74.8 x 21 x 27.5 inches | 6 pounds | Pack of two

Best Patterns

Lightspeed outdoors reclining beach chair.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Durability 4 /5

There are colorful prints to choose from including palm trees, hibiscus flowers, and nautical stripes.

The discreet pocket underneath the chair is a bit awkward to use.

With a variety of maritime prints and colors to choose from, these Lightspeed Outdoor beach chairs are as comfortable and portable as they are stylish. Whether you opt for stripes or palm tree patterns, you can also feel good about your purchase knowing that the fabric is made from recycled post-consumer plastic water bottles. The rustproof aluminum frame is lightweight and sturdy, and while we wish this chair reclined all the way flat, the fabric seat and four recline positions are comfortable and supportive for sitting at the beach all day long. Each armrest has a fabric caddy that falls to the side for items like a book, phone, or drink. There’s also a discreet pocket on the bottom, which we found awkward to reach when the chair is unfolded but handy for storing valuables. The straps have generous cushioning and adjustable buckles, making this already lightweight beach chair even more comfortable to carry long distances.

The Details: 26.5 x 24.5 x 31.25 | 7 pounds | 4 reclining positions | Made with recycled materials

Other Backpack Beach Chairs We Liked

There were several other backpack beach chairs we loved but didn’t quite make the cut due to minor issues we experienced while testing. Runner-ups in our eyes, they still may be the perfect chairs for you if they hit some specific needs.

Rio Beach Big Boy : This chair is large and roomy, and we loved how comfortable it was to spread out in. However, its bigger size made it cumbersome to carry, so it’s best if you're only traveling a short distance to the beach.

GCI Sun Shade : It comes with a canopy, which is ideal for having built-in shade at the beach, but it was quite difficult to set up and break down the sun shade. Buyers should be prepared for a slight learning curve at first.

We traveled with and sat in 26 beach chairs, including 12 options with built-in backpack straps, to compare and contrast each one based on comfort, stability, portability, ease of use, and durability. When looking at the 12 backpack beach chairs we tried, we carefully examined portability notes, weighing factors like weight, strap material and placement, and frame design to pick the easiest backpack beach chairs to take with you on your next trip to the ocean.

Testing began as soon as the beach chairs were unboxed. We closely examined the quality of the chairs until we were confident buyers could expect them to arrive in pristine condition. Then, we packed up our beach necessities and set out for the sand. We set up the chairs and sat in them for at least a few hours to get a feel for comfort, durability, and stability. Since portability is the main attraction of a backpack beach chair, we noted the comfort of the straps, the weight of the chair, and how easy it is to walk short or long distances with the beach chair strapped to our backs. We also paid close attention to the storage and other special features the chair brought to the table, especially to judge the overall value of the chair.

Tips for Buying a Backpack Beach Chair

Look for features like pockets and reclining positions.

High-quality backpack beach chairs can cost a little more than an average camp chair, so you’ll want to take a look at the specs of the product to make sure you’re getting the most out of what you’re paying for. Beach chairs can often double as storage for towels, drinks, and other beach accessories, so consider getting a chair with a regular zippered pocket, an insulated pocket, and a caddy by the armrest to hold a drink or phone. Depending on your reclining preferences, you should check the number and level of recline positions since not all chairs lay completely flat.

Consider where you’ll use the chair most

Whether you’re planning on lounging at the beach or sitting at an outdoor concert, factors like the weight and size of the chair play a huge role in portability, even if the chair has backpack straps. Most outdoor concerts have chair height limitations of 12 inches off the ground, so you’ll want to cross check the restrictions before heading out. If you know you have a longer walk to the beach, opt for a chair that weighs closer to 7 or 8 pounds or less. For those lucky enough to reside in walking distance to a beach or a short drive away, weight might be less important.

Most beach chairs are made of synthetic fabric that should hold up well over time, but if you spill something on the chair, be sure to wipe it off quickly to prevent more cleaning in the future. You should always read the cleaning instructions first, but some light spot cleaning or hosing down the chair and letting it dry before folding it back up should generally do the trick to get sand or dirt out quickly.

Backpack beach chairs aren’t as compact as folding ones, but if the size and weight of the chair fits the airline restrictions, you should have no issues checking it in. You may want to put it in a box or suitcase so it doesn’t get damaged in transit, but most airlines shouldn’t have a problem as long as it’s within the size restrictions.

The Spruce / Ivy Ford

Along with an absorbent beach towel, a quality beach chair is essential for making the most of your seaside excursions, especially if you plan on spending a whole day out on the sand.

We tested over 20 beach chairs to evaluate their portability, ease of use, comfort, and durability on the beaches of California, Florida, and New York. We toted each chair across the sand and even involved our kids in child-specific designs to get a full understanding of the best designs that are easy to set up and re-collapse.

Through our testing, we determined that the comfort and portability of a beach chair are the most important factors to consider when shopping. Look for beach chairs that recline or come with extra padding, footrests, or headrests to stay comfortable and supported for hours.

Whether you're using your beach chair in your backyard, at the park, or on a beach vacation, it's important to find a lightweight option that's easy to carry for long periods. Portable chairs must have easy folding mechanisms, padded carrying straps, and extra storage compartments for picnic blankets and beach towels .

Reclines flat

Covered phone pocket

Adjustable armrests

Safety lock

Limited color options

Easily earning our top spot, this chair from Homevative was a breeze to transport and comfortable for hours of lounging. This beach chair has a 19-inch seating width and supports up to 250 pounds. The chair’s arms can be pushed back for a more reclined position, or you can pull them forward again for an upright position.

A safety hinge also locks this chair when it’s fully open. You can also opt to lie completely flat using the rear towel bar as a support under your back. We also found this chair easy to collapse once it was time to head home.

We also appreciated the abundant features: a removable pillow with Velcro straps, two insulated cooler pouches, a covered phone pocket, and a mesh cup holder. We even secured a sun hat around the chair to keep it from flying away. The fabric is also easy to clean with mild soap and water.

The dual straps allowed us to carry it like a backpack and kept our hands available to tote other items. It also kept the chair's weight evenly distributed on our back, but at 8 pounds, this chair never felt exceptionally heavy. There was nothing we did not love about this chair, making the high price tag worth the investment,

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Four-position recline

Large storage pocket

Padded, adjustable straps

Hard to open initially

The Rio Beach 4-Position Backpack Lace Up Folding Beach Chair is a close runner-up to our best overall pick with four adjustable recline positions and plenty of onboard features. It's designed with a flexible suspension to conform to your body, offering the most comfortable support while lounging. We found this chair very comfortable for napping and enjoyed the adjustable headrest, which can also be completely removed. Unlike other chairs that may become uncomfortable after sitting for a long time, this chair remained comfortable for an extended period.

We also enjoyed how lightweight this chair is at just 8 pounds. The padded, adjustable straps also helped keep the chair's weight evenly distributed on our back while carrying. We will note this chair was slightly challenging to open initially, but once we understood its mechanisms, the process became easier with each use.

The large storage pouch also eliminates the need to carry an additional bag as you can easily fit a phone, book, sunscreen, and small water bottle. This chair also has a cup holder to keep your beverage of choice close by and free from sand. All in all, we don't think you can go wrong with this design, and at under $60, it's still relatively affordable, given all of the additional features.

Foldable legs for full recline

Confusing locking/unlocking mechanism

Tommy Bahama has become synonymous with summer relaxation, so it was no surprise to us that the brand's Backpack Beach Chair earned high marks during testing. Just like our best overall picks, this chair has backpack straps that make it easy to carry across the sand or park and back to your car after a long day in the sun.

The padded straps alleviated some of the weight, but this chair is already very easy to lift at just 8 pounds. The foldable leg for full reclining also doubles as a convenient handle when folding the chair and adjusting it on your back. This chair has a locking tab to keep it open—which we discovered is not as intuitive as it may seem. We recommend ensuring the chair is completely locked before sitting in it, or you may end up in the sand like we initially did.

Once you're ready to fold this chair back up, you must unlock the tab as well. We found it easier to adjust the seat back, which is accomplished by lifting on the armrests. The back even reclines flat for full sun tanning. A mesh cup holder and phone pocket are located on one of the armrests for nearby storage, and the back of this chair also has two zippered pouches. One of the pouches is even insulated to double as a cooler.

Dimensions : 24 x 32 x 28 inches | Weight : 8 pounds | Weight Capacity : 300 pounds | Materials : Aluminum and fabric | Colors : Blue, Sailfish and Palms, Tropical Sunset, multi-color | Carrying Strap : Yes | Cup Holder : Yes

Best Splurge

Ostrich deluxe 3-in-1 beach chair.

  • Portability 4 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

Adjustable footrest

Face cavity for lounging on your stomach

Higher off ground

Adjustable lower backrest

Foot rest not designed for tall people

To maximize your day of relaxation, we recommend the Ostrich Deluxe Padded 3-in-1 Aluminum Beach Chair. We sat in this chair for over two hours and tried all its various reclining positions, including the face cavity—a game changer when lying on your stomach. This chair even has cutouts on the backrest that function as arm slots, so you can comfortably lie flat and even reach a book while tanning on your stomach. Notably, we felt no usual neck discomfort from craning our heads side-to-side to find the right position.

This chair also has an adjustable footrest that can be moved between three positions. However, we did learn through testing that the footrest is more of a calf rest for users with long legs. However, this feature was still an added comfort because it allowed for full relaxation and reclining, whether on our backs or stomachs. In addition to a removable headrest, this chair also comes with an adjustable lower backrest for a more comfortable upright sitting experience, and it can be flipped up to provide more support for your stomach and chest when lying on your stomach.

Despite its multiple additional features and a larger frame, this chair is only 9.5 pounds, which is similar to other lightweight chairs in our roundup. We walked a decent distance from our car to our place on the beach and never experienced any discomfort when carrying this chair, and the shoulder strap has a surprising amount of padding to make the carrying experience even easier.

You'll also find a cup holder, which rotates under the wide armrest when not in use, and sturdy side pockets for a phone or sunscreen. Spending over $100 on a beach chair may seem a bit impractical, but our experience proves that this design is well worth the extra cost, especially if you prefer to stretch out when on the beach.

Dimensions : 60.76 x 28.93 x 12 inches | Weight : 9.5 pounds | Weight Capacity : 275 pounds | Material : Aluminum and fabric | Color : Blue, pink, or blue stripe | Carrying Strap : Yes | Cup Holder : Yes

Best Portable

Mac sports beach day foldable chaise lounge chair.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Durability 3 /5

Easy to maneuver

Four-position adjustable back

High storage capacity

Heavy with wheels

Low weight capacity

If you’re toting toys and other accessories, check out the MacSports Beach Day Foldable Lounge Chair. This easy-to-fold lounger-turned-wagon is a great way to carry all your beach essentials and a chair at once. We loaded this chair cart with a cooler, umbrella, and four other chairs and it was light as a feather on pavement and only slightly more cumbersome when rolling across the sand. The wheels’ wide tread made pulling this design much easier.

There are several steps for converting this cart to a chair and back, but after fiddling with the process, we found it an easy transition. The cart can hold up to 100 pounds in the removable mesh basket, and the lounger has a 200-pound capacity. The wagon handle is also telescopic, so you can compress it when the lounger is in use. As a lounger, we found this chair very comfortable and appreciated the leg rest, which kept our feet out of the sand. The seat has a wide frame and the back can be adjusted to four different reclining positions.

Because of its wheels and additional hardware, this chair weighs 21 pounds, the heaviest on this list. However, its rolling capabilities should counteract the additional weight of the entire unit, making it a great portable beach chair option.

Dimensions : 60.63 x 30.3 x 23.62 inches as lounger, 18.9 x 18.9 x 18.9 inches as cart | Weight : 20.9 pounds | Weight Capacity : As lounger, 200 pounds; as cart, 100 pounds | Material : Aluminum, steel, denier fabric | Color : Blue | Carrying Strap : Yes | Cup Holder : No

Best for Kids

Baby delight go with me chair.

  • Ease of Use 3 /5

Suitable for multiple ages

Removable snack tray

Removable 5-point harness

Shade is tricky to fold

When it comes to children’s beach chairs, you can’t beat this design from Baby Delight. Though it may not have the visual appeal of a classic beach chair, it’s so much more functional—plus, it’s suitable for a wide range of other outdoor adventures, from camping trips to sporting events. We were thrilled with all of the features this chair has to offer and it kept a little one seated long enough to enjoy a nice lunch on the beach. This chair grows with your child until they’re ready for an adult beach chair since it’s suitable for babies as young as 3 months and kids weighing up to 75 pounds.

While your little one is still young, the five-point removable harness keeps them nice and secure. Then, as your child learns to stand on their own, you can use the two leg holes perfect in the seat to let them stand with support. Once your child is a bit bigger, convert the chair back into a regular seat—sans harness. We found the carrying and setup process very simple, and the storage bag makes it easy to keep everything compact when not in use.

During testing, we did find that the removable snack tray was a bit challenging to put on and take off and the sun canopy was difficult to fold. However, we're still very impressed with the inventiveness of this design and our toddler testing companion seemed to enjoy sitting in it.

Dimensions : 23 x 23 x 25 inches | Weight : 6.2 pounds | Weight Capacity : 75-pound child | Material : Polyester fabric | Color : Gray, pink, teal, Moss Bud | Carrying Strap : No | Cup Holder : Yes

Best Budget

Kijaro beach sling chair.

Easy to open and setup

High off the ground

Slight recline

Built-in cooler

Doesn't recline

The Kijaro Coast Folding Beach Sling Chair has a similar design to what many people might consider a traditional camping or folding sports chair. However, the seat and back of the chair are made from one piece of polyester, creating a sling effect and offering a slight recline. We had no issues toting this chair and the setup is as simple as opening it up like a traditional camping chair. The frame is also high enough off the ground that we didn't feel like we were going to fall over while sitting down.

This chair has two mesh cup holders, a water-resistant detachable accessory organizer, and a built-in cooler. The detachable pillow didn’t appeal to us as much as we expected, but it could easily be stowed in the carrying bag, if you don't want to use it. While this chair doesn't recline, which might be important to some beachgoers, we appreciate its simple design and affordable price point.

Dimensions : 29 x 33 x 33.8 inches | Weight : 6.6 pounds | Weight Capacity : 300 pounds | Material : Metal and polyester | Colors : Fiji Sunset Orange, Haleakala Sunrise Yellow, Hanami Pink, Ionian Turquoise, Maldives Blue | Carrying Strap : Yes | Cup Holder : Yes

Best Low-Profile

Kingcamp low sling beach chair.

  • Durability 4 /5

Mesh seat back

Padded armrests

Easy to store in included bag

Not best for tall users

For those who prefer a low-sitting beach chair, we recommend this option from KingCamp. This chair has a mesh back, which offers some ventilation to feel the breeze and allows your suit to dry if you just sat down after a swim in the ocean. The armrests are curved and padded, adding to the overall sling-chair design. This sling design was very comfortable, but we did find ourselves sliding down, which made us wish it had some reclining features.

We also want to point out that this chair would not be best for taller users, as it may be difficult to climb out. However, it is very lightweight and easy to store in the included bag. Overall, if you're not looking for additional features and just want a simple chair design, we think this is a great option.

Dimensions : 24.8 inches x 23.2 inches x 25.2 inches | Weight : 6.6 pounds | Weight Capacity : 300 pounds | Material : Alloy steel and polyester | Colors : Blue, cyan, green, rose | Carrying Strap : Yes | Cup Holder : Yes

Best Inflatable

Wekapo inflatable lounger.

  • Durability 3.5 /5

Very comfortable

Packs compactly

No pump needed

Very lightweight

Inflation process has a learning curve

Deflates quickly

The Wekapo Inflatable Lounger Air Sofa inflates to 7 feet long, allowing plenty of space to relax, along with a beverage and a book or e-reader. We love that this lounger packs down to a small draw-string bag that you can easily carry. At only 2 pounds (the lightest on this list), it probably weighs less than the water bottle you bring to the beach.

The best part is you don't need an air pump to fill this lounger. Simply run with the lounger open and then close the sleeve to trap air. We found it very easy to accomplish this task with help from the beach winds, but we could see this being a challenge in a park or at a lake with less wind available.

This design is slightly awkward to get into, and we found the best method was just rolling out of it onto the sand, but that may be challenging for users with limited mobility. We also noted that despite the manufacturer’s claim to remain inflated for 5 to 6 hours, this lounger did leak air. We noticed ourselves slowly sinking while sitting in it, and eventually, we could feel the sand under us rather than the air supporting our back.

This was slightly disappointing, but we're curious to see if a greater number of rolls before clasping it shut would fix this issue. Despite a few quirks, we think this chair is a fun design and love that it comes in 16 colors, including solids and patterns. And we enjoyed being able to lie on the beach without constantly getting covered in sand.

Dimensions : 15.04 x 11.69 x 5.51 inches | Weight : 2 pounds | Weight Capacity : Not listed | Material : Polyester | Colors : 16 | Carrying Strap : Yes | Cup Holder : Yes

Final Verdict

Our best overall pick is the Homevative Folding Backpack Beach Chair with 5 Positions . We enjoyed using this lightweight, easy-to-carry beach chair, plus it offers plenty of storage capacity for essential beach supplies. You also couldn’t go wrong with the Rio Beach 4-Position Lace-Up Backpack Folding Beach Chair , our best overall, runner-up , which has a comfortable suspension seat design and padded backpack straps for added portability.

Rio Beach Wave 1-Position Beach Folding Sand Chair : While there wasn't anything we strongly disliked about this chair, it just didn't stand out against the other chairs that truly blew us away. Its simple design is easy to open, but you are basically sitting on the sand with a layer of canvas between you. Without a cupholder or additional recline positions, we felt this design was lacking for the almost $40 price tag.

GCI Outdoor Waterside SunShade Backpack Beach Chair : Despite being really excited about the attached sunshade, this chair let us down because it was bulky and awkward to carry. The sunshade wouldn't re-collapse and the headrest dangled between our legs because there was no way to fully secure it. While it's a durable option, we thought the exciting design elements fell short of their potential.

How We Tested the Beach Chairs

For this article, we purchased and tested 27 beach chairs from several manufacturers, including models with sunshades, backpack straps, and other accessories. Then, we used the chairs for several weeks in real-world settings on the beaches of New York, California, and Florida, evaluating them on a variety of factors:

  • Portability: We monitored how chairs with straps or backpacks felt while being lugged, especially. We made sure to note their weight, any helpful carrying features, and any discomforts while doing so.
  • Comfort : Once we arrived at our desired locations, we unfolded the chairs and spent a day at the beach (several times over three weeks), using the beach chairs in various positions, including sitting, reclining, or lying flat. We noted any padding, headrests, or footrests that added to the comfort of the chairs. After sitting in each one for several hours, we determined whether they were comfortable over time.
  • Ease of Use: We determined whether each chair was easy to open and set up and examined its features, such as pouches, cupholders, coolers, and other compartments for beach accessories.
  • Durability : We also tested each chair's durability by plopping down and attempting to rock side-to-side in it. If a chair's material didn't seem like it would last against salt water and sand, we noted it in our results sheets.
  • Overall Value : Finally, we checked the price of each chair and offered our honest impressions of whether the design matched the value. We considered whether we'd recommend each design to a friend or family member and whether it'd be a product that we'd want to invest in ourselves.

Our team of editors then evaluated all of our feedback to create the list of products above. We reviewed the highest-scoring chairs as well as those that didn't perform, as we hoped to offer you a comprehensive review list.

What to Look for in a Beach Chair

Similar to other outdoor chairs, you want to look for a beach chair that can withstand exposure to wet conditions. Sand and salt water make for an especially corrosive combination, so it's normal for a beach chair to deteriorate or become more difficult to open over time.

All of the beach chairs featured in this roundup are made with aluminum or steel frames and have polyester or an alternative synthetic fabric seat. These materials are great because they're not only more resistant to corrosion but also are fade-resistant and easy to spot clean when necessary.

Our best budget option, the  Kijaro Coast Folding Beach Sling Chair , is lightweight and comfortable thanks to a breathable polyester fabric that will resist tearing and fading. The rust-resistant frame is also easy to fold and should last for several seasons. Some chairs may come with wooden armrests like our best splurge pick, the Ostrich Deluxe Padded Sport 3-in-1 Aluminum Beach Chair , which is also a great weather-resistant material. However, keep in mind that wood will fade over time.

Portability

Many beach chairs come with some sort of strap to make carrying easier—no more stuffing a bulky chair under your arm along with all of your other beach supplies. Backpack-style straps are by far the most popular as they're often padded and can be easily adjusted for a proper fit. Backpack beach chairs also keep your hands free to guide children back to the car or carry a cooler.

Several of the picks in our roundup feature backpack straps including the Rio Beach 4-Position Lace-Up Backpack Folding Beach Chair ( best overall, runner-up ), the  Homevative Folding Backpack Beach Chair ( best overall ), and the Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair ( best backpack ). All of these chairs were comfortable to carry during our testing sessions, and we had no issues re-collapsing them to carry back to our cars.

Additional Features

If you plan on staying at the beach all day, you may want a beach chair that has helpful features to improve functionality. Things like a multi-position recline, cup holders, storage pockets, and even insulated coolers can all improve your beach experience and minimize the overall number of items you have to carry with you.

By far one of the most innovative chairs we tested was the  Mac Sports Beach Day Foldable Chaise Lounge Chair , our best portable pick, which doubles as a beach wagon, so you can cart up to 100 pounds of everything you need for a day out. The chair itself also has four recline positions and a footrest, so you'll be comfortable and easily keep everything organized.

Both steel and aluminum are rust-resistant, so they will last longer than plastic chairs. Steel is a very sturdy material, so it may not bend or warp over time; however, many beach chairs are now made of aluminum because it is a lighter material.

Find out what your beach chairs are made of to avoid ruining them with chemicals or cleaning tools that are too harsh. Keep your beach chairs dry as much as possible and be sure to wipe them off after each use to prevent a build-up of sand. Once spring and summer are over, be sure to properly store your chairs in a covered area away from the elements.

Properly storing beach chairs depends on the kind of beach chairs you have, but wall racks and storage pegs are often great for keeping them tidy. You can fold and hang up chairs or cinch them and tuck them away in their storage bag. You can stack plastic and wooden chairs and move them to the side; just be sure the chairs are clean and dry before storing them long-term. If you store chairs outdoors or in a shed, be sure to secure them with a protective tarp or outdoor furniture cover .

Take Our Word for It

What is real simple selects.

Real Simple / Ivy Ford

Nothing screams summer like a relaxing beach day, and finding a comfortable place to sit is essential. A good beach chair can be the difference between a blissful day you wish would never end and an unpleasant one you’d rather cut short.

“It is far more comfortable for your back to be sitting in a proper seat than on a beach blanket while reading, enjoying the scenery, or chatting with family and friends,” says Keri Baugh , founder of the family travel blog Bon Voyage With Kids. “Plus, a chair helps keep sand on your feet—and not everywhere else.”

To find the best beach chairs, we spent hours researching and testing out different models, considering factors like type, portability, comfort, and features. For each chair, we took careful note of how easy it was to carry to and from the beach, how intuitive the set-up and breakdown were, and how comfortable it was to sit and lay in throughout the day. We also received expert tips from Baugh as well as David D’Alessandro , the inventor and designer of Ostrich beach chairs.

Best Overall Beach Chair

Homevative folding backpack beach chair.

  • Portability 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This lightweight beach chair has it all—pockets, backpack straps, a headrest, and multiple reclining settings.

The thigh bar doesn’t offer much in terms of padding.

Homevative’s Folding Backpack Beach Chair is our top pick for its portability, numerous pockets, and ability to recline fully. We found this to be one of the most reliable chairs we’ve ever used, thanks to the suspension lace-up sides which provide ample stretch and sturdiness. The setup process was easy and intuitive, and the arms and legs glided out effortlessly. Note that there’s a thigh bar, which we found offered additional support for our legs but had minimal padding. For those who prefer a chair with no thigh bar, the brand makes several versions without it.

We brought this chair on several trips to the beach and found it easy to carry across all sorts of terrain—we covered sidewalks, gravel, staircases, and plenty of sand—and the padded, adjustable backpack straps felt comfortable and kept us hands-free the whole time. It stayed put on both wet and dry sand, and we loved how easy it was to recline it to five different positions, including the crucial option to lay the chair flat for a beach nap (there’s even a built-in headrest for maximum comfort).

The variety of pockets also came in handy for our beach days, with two spacious zippered pockets on the back. One pocket is insulated, so you can tuck small drinks and snacks in there to keep them cool, while the other two small pockets are along the armrest for drinks and essentials like your phone and wallet.

Dimensions : 17 x 25 x 33 inches | Weight : 7 pounds | Weight Capacity : 250 pounds | Materials : Aluminum

Best Budget Beach Chair

Kijaro beach sling chair.

  • Portability 4 /5
  • Ease of Use 4 /5

The breathable mesh material allows for maximum airflow to keep you cool on sunny beach days.

It’s somewhat bulky when folded up, and it's difficult to repack into its included carrying case.

This ultra-lightweight chair from Kijaro is a dream on a hot summer day, thanks to the breathable mesh paneling on the backseat that helps to wick away sweat from your back and bottom. The chair also weighs less than 7 pounds, making it easy to carry from the car to the beach. Just note that it’s a bit bulky when folded up, so smaller children may have trouble carrying it.

We love how easy this chair is to set up and how comfortable it is. We spent several beach days and afternoon naps posted up in this seat, and we appreciated how relaxed it was while still offering solid support. There’s no shortage of convenient features either, including a water-resistant detachable organizer for storing your valuables on the go, a removable headrest, double cup holders, and a built-in insulated pouch that can keep a six-pack cool. Overall, we think this chair is an excellent choice for people who want a lightweight beach chair at a reasonable price.

Dimensions : 29 x 33 x 33.8 inches | Weight : 6.6 pounds | Weight Capacity : 300 pounds | Materials : Powder coated steel, polyester

Best High-Back Beach Chair

Rio folding beach chair.

Its back is an impressive 44.7 inches high, making this a super comfortable chair for taller folks to relax in.

Opening the chair requires a bit of a learning curve.

Anyone on the taller side will appreciate the extended backseat of this beach chair, which is 44.7 inches high and boasts a plush, adjustable headrest. The chair itself is incredibly comfortable and feels secure when plopping down after a long swim or walk on the beach. The straps also make it easy to carry and distribute the chair’s weight evenly, which is less than 8 pounds. Plus, the material is easy to wipe down.

In our testing, we found the recline smooth and liked that there were four different positions to relax in, without ever having to worry about pinching our fingers as with old-school beach chairs. While the setup process was slightly confusing the first time, we quickly got the hang of it.

Dimensions : 25.5 x 26.5 x 44.7 inches | Weight : 7.54 pounds | Weight Capacity : 240 pounds | Materials : Aluminum, polyester, foam

Best Low-Profile Beach Chair

Kingcamp low sling beach chair.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Durability 4 /5

The seat is just under 9 inches off the sand, and the ergonomic armrests offer padding for additional comfort.

It doesn’t recline.

If you’re someone who tends to overload yourself with towels, totes, chairs, and coolers on beach trips, then you’ll appreciate how easy the KingCamp beach chair is to carry when your hands are full. At less than 6.5 pounds, this chair can be slung over your shoulder using the convenient carrying case that’s included. And in our tests, we found it very easy to fold the chair in and out of the case, too.

We loved how pleasant it was to stretch out your legs from this seat, and found the curved, padded armrests a uniquely comfortable way to kick back and relax. Because of its low-profile design, you’ll be sitting just 8.6 inches off the ground in this chair—perfect for those who like to get as close to the sand as possible without lying on a beach towel .

However, we did wish that the chair could recline, as the soft back makes it easy to sink into the seat. Still, features like breathable mesh paneling on the back and a mesh cup holder made this a standout option among the various other low-profile models we tested, as they kept us sweat-free and helped prevent sand from getting all over our drinks.

Dimensions : 24.8 x 23.2 x 25.2 inches | Weight : 6.45 pounds | Weight Capacity : 300 pounds | Materials : Alloy steel, polyester

Best Reclining Beach Chair

Tommy bahama backpack beach chair.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5

There’s a rubber carrying handle and a bar to drape towels or wet swimsuits over when the chair is in use.

You can feel the metal chair legs against your back when carrying it as a backpack.

As one of the most renowned brands when it comes to beach apparel and accessories, Tommy Bahama doesn’t disappoint with its Backpack Beach Chair. The padded backpack straps are comfortable and free up your hands to grab all of your other beach essentials. (Although you could also store your essentials in the various pockets included on the chair, like a generously sized zippered storage pouch on the back and an insulated cooler.)

With a cup holder and cell phone pocket that dangle off the armrest, this chair enables you to keep your small essentials on hand. You could also tote it around via the rubber carrying handle, which might be preferable to some as you can feel the chair’s metal frame when wearing it as a backpack.

We found the towel bar to be one of the beach chair’s most impressive features, allowing you to hang up wet towels or bathing suits. This chair adjusts to five comfortable reclining positions, including all the way flat so that you can stretch out for a midday nap. We suggest reading the directions to figure out how to open and close the chair—it’s less intuitive than some of the other picks on this list but becomes easy once you’ve done it a few times.

Dimensions : 4 x 24 x 27 inches | Weight : 7.66 pounds | Weight Capacity : 300 pounds | Materials : Aluminum, alloy steel, polyester

Best Cushioned Beach Chair

Ostrich deluxe 3-in-1 beach chair.

  • Value 4.8 /5

There’s a footrest and an open-close headrest that can be used as a pillow or a face cradle.

At just over 10 pounds, this is one of the heavier options on this list.

Ostrich crafts some of the most luxurious, intuitively comfortable beach chairs on the market. The brand has nailed all of the extra features that you crave when at the beach, from cupholders and side pockets to padded footrests and an adjustable lower-back pillow. This chair reclines smoothly in five different positions, and the footrest can be adjusted at three angles, which helped us to find the most comfortable positions for kicking back at the beach, whether we were eating lunch, reading, or taking a nap.

The extra-wide wooden armrests are a great touch, and the cupholder even tucks beneath them when not in use. We loved how the headrest could be removed to reveal a face cradle, which allowed us to lay face-down for an even tan. While this chair clocks in at just over 10 pounds, the extra weight feels worth it for the wide variety of extras that offer full-day comfort—plus it’s still easy to carry in one hand. Note that this chair is extremely popular and sells out quickly, so be sure to snap one up when you see that it’s available.

Dimensions : 60.7 x 28.1 x 39.7 inches | Weight : 10.8 pounds | Weight Capacity : 275 pounds | Materials : Heavy duty textiline, aluminum, wood

Best Face-Down Beach Chair

Ostrich on your back beach chair.

  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

There’s an open-close face cradle that allows you to rest more comfortably face down, and the chair offers top-notch cushioned support.

The cup holder is somewhat flimsy, and taller people may wish it extended further when it’s reclined completely flat.

Ostrich’s patented face cradle is an innovation that makes laying on your stomach comfier than ever. The head pillow flips upwards to reveal a supportive pop-up face cradle, akin to what you'd find on a massage table. We loved using this beach chair for napping, securing the ever-elusive even tan, and reading without squinting the sun out of our eyes—the latter was extremely easy because the chair has convenient arm slots, which allowed us to reach our arms through the chair to comfortably hold a book or e-reader.

While this was the best option we tested for spending extended time face-down, we wished it extended slightly further than 46 inches to offer more leg support. Like many others on our list, this beach chair also boasts padded backpack straps for easy portability.

Dimensions : 46 x 26.4 x 9.2 inches | Weight : 10.5 pounds | Weight Capacity : 275 pounds | Materials : Steel, polyester

Best Beach Lounger

Pacific breeze lounger.

The cushion boasts significantly thicker padding than similar models we tested.

There’s a learning curve for adjusting the backpack straps to fold and unfold the chair.

The Pacific Breeze Backpack Beach Lounger was one of the most cushioned chairs we tested, thanks to the ample padding throughout. Crucially, the material is quick-drying and easy to wipe down, and it doesn’t absorb a ton of heat either, so it’s comfortable enough to lounge on without a towel. Taller people will love how this lounger extends to 74.8 inches, keeping your legs sand-free while reclining or fully lying down.

At just 6 pounds, this is also one of the most lightweight options that we tested, and it folds down fairly thin for easy storage when not in use. The backpack straps also make it a breeze to carry while juggling the rest of your beach essentials, although they are slightly tricky to figure out how to slide on and off the lounger when first unfolding it. It comes in a two-pack, making this one of the best values on our list. (This way, your beach buddy won’t be jealous of how comfortable you look on this lounger.)

Dimensions : 74.8 x 21 x 27.5 inches | Weight : 6 pounds | Weight Capacity : 300 pounds | Materials : Alloy steel, padded fabric

Best Inflatable Beach Chair

Wekapo inflatable lounger.

  • Durability 3.5 /5

It can accommodate up to 650 pounds, which is double the weight capacity of any other option on this list.

It needs to be re-inflated every so often to maintain its buoyancy.

At just 2 pounds uninflated, this unique beach chair can be packed into its carrying case and tossed into any beach bag or carry-on for maximal portability. We found it a breeze—literally—to inflate since you can whisk it through the air to fill it up instead of requiring a pump. This took a few tries (you have to shut the mouth sleeve between movements to keep the air inside) but was relatively straightforward.

Once inflated, the Wekapo chair is firm and comfortable, although it’s a bit awkward to get in and out of. Keep in mind that it noticeably deflates after an hour or so, requiring you to get up and fill it with air once again. Ultimately, this is the case with most inflatable beach chairs, and we found this one to last longer than other options on the market.

There’s also a handy side slot for storing a water bottle or magazine, but it fills with sand easily, so it’s not a great place to store your phone or other electronics. It’s available in 16 vibrant colors and patterns to show off your summer style, from bold neons to funky florals.

Most Versatile Beach Chair

Mac sports beach day foldable chaise lounge chair.

  • Durability 3 /5

This chair converts into a cart that easily fits a day’s beach supplies for the whole family.

At over 15 pounds, this is the heaviest option on our list.

Group beach trips tend to mean lugging several tote bags, coolers, towels, and beach toys around—not to mention chairs and umbrellas. The Mac Sports 2-in-1 Beach Day Lounger & Cargo Cart revolutionizes your carrying capacity by converting from a convenient push cart into a comfortable lounger, allowing you to toss everything you need for the day inside and roll it to your spot on the sand before unfolding it back into a chair.

The all-terrain wheels are super smooth on pavement, and we found that they work better than we expected on sand. As a beach chair, this pick easily reclines into four different positions and boasts an extended leg rest. While we wish there were a few other extras—most notably, a cup holder—we were delighted by how efficiently this versatile chair worked and how straightforward it was to set up.

Dimensions : 60.6 x 30.3 x 23.6 inches (chair), 30.3 x 33.9 x 40.9 inches (cart)  | Weight : 15.71 pounds | Weight Capacity : 200 pounds (chair), 100 pounds (cart) | Materials : Aluminum, polyester, plastic

Easiest to Carry

Lightspeed outdoors reclining beach chair.

It's lightweight yet durable, featuring ample storage compartments.

It doesn't recline as much as other options on our list.

Avoid the dreaded lugging of the beach chair with this backpack option that makes the process a bit more bearable. Weighing just 7 pounds, we found this beach chair incredibly easy and comfortable to carry. And despite its lightweight design, it proved surprisingly sturdy. From the padded straps to the strong legs, we found this chair to be both comfortable and durable. After having adults and children sit in the chair on both wet and dry sand, we received only rave reviews. With four different reclining positions to choose from, this chair provides ample angle adjustment. It doesn't recline fully flat, though.

In addition to its portable design, we appreciate that this chair kept us completely sand-free. It has two armrest pockets— one to hold an icy beverage and one to store your phone, sunglasses, or other items—so you won't have to worry about your beach essentials getting sandy. It also features a large pocket underneath the seat, making it perfect for carrying beach reads or towels and minimizing the need for a beach bag. While we appreciate the extra storage, we think the pocket would have been more useful if located on the back of the chair rather than the bottom.

Unlike clunkier alternatives, this beach chair is one of the most aesthetic ones we tried. Crafted with polyester from recycled water bottles, it's an eco-friendly option as well. We also appreciate the style variation, as the chair comes in five different prints. Given its storage, portability, and style, we think this beach chair is well worth the buy.

Dimensions : 26.5 x 24.5 x 31.2 inches | Weight : 7 pounds | Weight Capacity : 225 pounds | Materials : Polyester, foam

The Homevative Folding Backpack Beach Chair is the best beach chair we tested. We love that it comes with numerous extras, including lay-flat reclining, a variety of pockets for everything from drinks to your phone, and a comfortable headrest. If you're seeking a more affordable option, we recommend the Kijaro Beach Sling Chair for its comfort, storage, and lightweight design.

We tested 26 beach chairs, with individuals of various weights and heights taking them out on several beach trips to see how they performed in the real world. Every beach chair on our list was evaluated based on portability, ease of use, comfort, durability, and value.

First, we assessed how compact the chairs were upon arrival, and if there were any features that made them easy to transport, like backpack straps or handles. Then, we took careful notes on how intuitive each beach chair was to set up and break down. And if there was the option to recline, we noted how smooth the movement was.

We then spent at least 30 minutes at a time in each chair (repeatedly, throughout the afternoon, and on multiple occasions during the testing period) to evaluate the long-term comfort. We pushed and prodded at pillows, backrests, armrests, and footrests to find the comfiest options. We also made sure to plop down extra hard into our chairs and bounce back and forth in them to test their durability.

How to Shop for Beach Chairs Like a Pro

When searching for a new beach chair, you should first consider how you like to lounge. If comfort is your priority, look for a reclining or cushioned beach chair. People who like to lay on their stomachs will need a face-down beach chair, like the Ostrich On-Your-Back Beach Chair , which has a built-in face cradle behind the pillow. On the other hand, loungers are best for those who want to lie on their backs close to the sand—and we recommend the cushiony Pacific Breeze Backpack Beach Lounger based on our testing.

Portability

We're all familiar with the hassle of lugging cumbersome, heavy, and unwieldy items to the beach, which is why portability should be a key consideration as you shop.

“Portability means the chair can fold flat, is generally 12 pounds or less, and can be carried easily via a single carry strap or dual backpack carry straps,” says D'Alessandro. Baugh agrees, adding “if you have a heavy, wonky beach chair, it will make carrying it to the beach difficult and uncomfortable. Ones that are lightweight and easy to carry are ideal.”

The material your beach chair is made of can determine how durable and lightweight it is. The most common frame options are aluminum, steel, and wood. “Aluminum frames are usually lighter and tend to hold up longer in a beach environment,” says D’Alessandro. “But steel frames are generally stronger, and typically will have a higher weight capacity rating.”

When it comes to seat material, Baugh recommends fabrics that withstand outdoor elements. “Recycled plastic is a good sand- and water-resistant choice, though this material can get hot in the sun,” she says. “We also have found chairs with a water-resistant canvas to be a great choice. They may attract a bit more sand, but they can be easily hosed off for cleaning. Mesh chairs are also a good choice, as they will not absorb water or sand.” The Lightspeed Outdoors ECO Ultimate Backpack Beach Chair , for example, is made of polyester from recycled water bottles.

Bonus features make one beach chair stand out from the next. Do you want a built-in pillow or cup holder? Storage pockets to hold your essentials? How about an insulated pouch to keep your drinks cold instead of using a full-size cooler ? These add-ons can improve comfort or accessibility to frequently used items, like sunscreen, a book, or a beverage.

More Beach Chairs to Consider

Oniva Picnic Time Portable Folding Sports Chair : This durable chair features a fold-out table, making it easy to snack, read, or play cards on the beach. It doesn't recline, though, so it's better for reading than lounging.

Questions You Might Ask

How do you keep beach chairs from rusting.

Moisture is the most common cause of rust on aluminum and steel frames, so all you need to do to avoid rust is keep your beach chair dry. Also, look for rust-resistant finishes or materials, as some beach chairs are treated to prevent buildup.

How do you clean beach chairs?

When you return from the beach, shake your chair to remove any lingering sand or dust. If necessary, you can vacuum the remaining debris. (A handheld vacuum will be better for this task than a clunky upright model.) Then, use soapy water to remove stains and dry wet spots.

What is the lifespan of a beach chair?

There are two components that determine the lifespan of your beach chair: the upkeep and the materials. Look for long-lasting materials like aluminum and water-resistant canvas to ensure your beach chairs can withstand the sandy conditions. We also recommend keeping your beach chair dry and out of direct sunlight when it isn’t in use to further preserve the materials and prevent wear and tear.

This article was written by Morgan Goldberg and Sophie Dodd , contributing writers for Real Simple, and updated by Jamie Fischer , a commerce writer for Real Simple. To come up with these recommendations, we tested 26 of the best beach chairs and evaluated them based on their portability, ease of setup, features, overall value, and more. We also consulted Keri Baugh of Bon Voyage With Kids and David D’Alessandro of Ostrich for expert tips.

Next to each product on this list, you may have noticed a Real Simple Selects seal of approval . Any product appearing alongside that seal has been vetted by our team—put through tests and graded on its performance to earn a spot on our list. Although we buy most of the products we test, sometimes we do get samples from companies if purchasing a product ourselves isn’t an option. All products go through the same rigorous process, whether they are purchased or sent by the company.

Nothing can take a beach day from good to great quite like being prepared with a few essentials. A Bluetooth speaker , cooler , beach umbrella and beach towel make our good-to-have list. But a quality beach chair? Now, that’s a necessity for seaside relaxation.

What to Look for in a Beach Chair

When shopping for a beach chair, there are a few things you should consider: portability , weight, functionality and price. If you plan on toting your chair often — or want it to fit in a bag — then portability and weight might be your biggest factors. A chair that weighs two pounds versus 10 pounds will make a big difference. Plus, a chair that folds flat or fits into its own storage bag will take up less space in your car or camper than one that isn’t marketed for its portability. You’ll also want to note any functions — or bells and whistles — that are important to you, like canopies, backpack straps, headrests, cup holders, coolers and more. And while it’s difficult to find a high-quality, long-lasting beach chair for less than $30, you can certainly find what you’re looking for within a reasonable price range. Many brands even offer special prices for sets, so you can buy two at a better price.

Shop our top picks for beach chairs that were chosen based on their top-notch ratings and positive reviews across the board.

How To Travel With Beach Chairs – A complete guide

how to travel with beach chairs

It’s easy enough to collapse a beach chair and put it in your trunk when you drive to the local beach, but what happens if you want to take your favorite beach furniture to a more exotic location? You can bring beach chairs on various modes of transport, including planes, but there are several rules that you’ll need to familiarize yourself with first.

Continue reading if you’re wondering how to travel with beach chairs and want answers to some frequently asked questions about transporting your favorite furniture.

Can I Take A Beach Chair On An Airplane?

Yes, you can. You can check in a beach chair just as you would check in any other piece of luggage.

Ideally, you’ll want to fold the chair and place it in your checked bag. However, if this isn’t an option, you can pay for the additional size and weight to transport your furniture.

The best beach chairs to take on a plane are those which are compact and lightweight for easy maneuvering.

Can You Take A Beach Chair On An American, United, Southwest, Or Delta Airlines Flight?

Yes, it’s easy enough to check a beach chair on any of these flights. They aren’t sensitive objects, so don’t face any restrictions on that front. They will, however, cost an additional fee if they exceed the size and weight allowance of your checked-in baggage.

The baggage allowance of each airline is as follows:

American Airlines

  • Maximum weight of checked bag to all destinations except New Zealand and Australia: 50lbs
  • Maximum weight of checked bag for travelers to New Zealand or Australia: 70lbs
  • Maximum size of checked bag: 62 inches (length+width+height)
  • Maximum dimensions of oversized bag: 126 inches (length+width+height)
  • Maximum weight of oversized bag:100lbs

The cost of oversize and overweight baggage varies depending on the destination:

United Airlines

  • United Economy – 50lbs
  • United Business, First, or Polaris Business Class – 70lbs
  • Maximum weight of oversized bag: 100lbs
  • Maximum dimensions of oversized baggage: 115 inches (length+width+height)
  • United Airlines only accept excess baggage if there is room on the flight.
  • Auckland, Melbourne, and Sydney have a maximum baggage allowance of 70lbs.
  • Honduras limits travelers to two checked bags weighing up to 50lbs. Excess baggage, including overweight or oversize items, is not allowed.

Southwest Airlines

  • Your first two checked bags are free to fly
  • Maximum weight of checked bag: 50lbs
  • Any additional bags that are 62 inches or less and don’t exceed the weight limit of 50lbs cost $75 each way
  • Excess baggage (baggage that exceeds the size or weight limitations) costs $75 + applicable oversize/overweight charges.
  • Maximum dimensions: 100lbs and 80 inches in size (anything that exceeds this is considered Air Cargo)

Delta Airlines

  • Your first standard checked bag is $30, and your second is $40.
  • Maximum weight of checked bag for Delta One, First, and Business class passengers: 70lbs
  • No excess baggage is permitted on flights to or from Mexico.
  • Excess baggage fees apply to any luggage that exceeds these limitations.

How To Travel With Beach Chairs On A Plane

Once you establish the rules and limitations of your airline provider, you’ll be relying on your packing skills to accommodate the design of your chair.

Compact and lightweight beach chairs are the easiest to travel with. They can fold easily and should fit into your checked-in bag. These include backpack beach chairs that take up minimal space.

These types of chairs are particularly great if you’re suffering from bad knees. Beach chairs for bad knees tend to feature a high seat that allow you to keep your knees at a normal distance from the ground’s surface.

They make it much easier for you to get up without causing too much stress on your knees.

Another factor is the weight of your chair. Ideally, you’ll want a lightweight design as the checked baggage restriction on most airplanes is 50lbs.

If you have something like a zero-gravity beach chair that weighs 20lbs by itself, you’ll struggle to accommodate it within your checked-in luggage. You may therefore need to pay for it as a separate piece of checked-in baggage.

Can I Take A Beach Chair In My Carry On Luggage?

There are no security restrictions against you taking a beach chair as part of your carry-on luggage. However, the size and weight dimensions are much smaller for carry-on than checked-in baggage.

Chances are, your beach chairs will exceed the weight or dimensions required for carry-on luggage. It is therefore a much better idea to include them with your checked-in bags.

Which Are The Best Beach Chairs To Pack Into A Suitcase?

Which Are The Best Beach Chairs To Pack Into A Suitcase

The best beach chairs to pack into your suitcase are those which are lightweight and compact.

Camping chairs are an ideal style to travel with. These are designed for carrying around and possess lightweight and compact qualities.

Which Are The Best Beach Chairs To Travel With?

There are many beach chairs available, but some are better for traveling than others:

Folding Chairs

Folding Chairs

A folding chair is a simple, widely available chair that is lightweight and ideal for traveling.

As the name suggests, this type of beach chair often folds down into a much smaller size. This makes them a perfect traveling companion.

The only drawback is that this type of chair is one of the simplest on the market. It is therefore unlikely to possess any fancy mechanisms that allow you to adjust to position or recline.

Lounge Chairs

Lounge Chairs

This type of beach chair is longer and lower to the ground. The significant feature that this type of chair offers is that it’s totally adjustable and allows you to get into the most comfortable position.

Plus, some high-end models possess ergonomic upgrades.

These are perfect for people with back problems, but you’ll need to source a collapsable version as some models are large, bulky, and not suitable for traveling.

Sand Chairs

Sand Chairs

This type of chair is perfect if you’re looking for a fashionable alternative to the lounger, and they are more stable on the sand than many other models.

They aren’t great for people with back problems , though, and again, you’ll need to source a collapsable model that folds down to a transportable size.

How To Travel With Beach Chairs If I Have Multiple Items.

If you’re looking to pack a single beach chair, you can likely source a collapsable model that will fit into your carry-on bag, but if you’re looking to pack multiple chairs for your family, you may need to look for an alternative solution.

One way of doing this is to bundle multiple beach chairs together and pack them into a duffle bag.

If you can package the chairs together, keeping the weight and dimensions within the checked baggage allowance, you’ll be able to save yourself some money on excess baggage fees.

It’s also a good idea to think about how you are going to store your beach chairs at your hotel or rental home as they can take up quite a large amount of space.

Again, foldable chairs are ideal in this scenario.

Final Thoughts: How To Travel With Beach Chairs

At the end of the day, if you want to take your beach chairs on vacation with you, you can do this, but you may end up paying additional fees.

All airlines have size and weight limitations, and you’ll save yourself a bit of money if you can pack your beach chair into a suitcase.

Otherwise, pack the chairs in a separate bag and ensure that their weight does not exceed 50lbs as this is the maximum allowance for most types of travel.

The Best Beach Chair Is the Tommy Bahama Backpack Chair

A person sitting in a Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair on a sandy beach next to an ocean.

By Annemarie Conte

Annemarie Conte is an editor who writes the Ask Wirecutter column and trending-product reviews. She’d love to make you a friendship bracelet.

My parents bought a beach house—their dream—back when you could buy a New Jersey beach house on a teacher’s salary. They then filled it with all of the garage-sale and curb castoffs they could find, producing a mostly cute kitschy hodgepodge.

But their inability to pass up any heavy, saggy, rusted, semi-broken, or hard-to-use beach chair resulted in the storage area overflowing with dozens of them. That is, until I put my foot down.

Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair

A traditional beach chair.

The Tommy Bahama chair has straps for carrying it, plus great build quality and a cooler to keep your drinks out of the heat. You need to bring your own shade, though.

Buying Options

It all started with one Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair , which I bought for my husband, the poor sap who literally gets stuck lugging a wagon full of sand toys and children uphill both ways. And then, as my kids got older and became able to carry their own stuff , we added a few more Tommy Bahama chairs for them. We’ve been using the chairs for years now, and the Tommy Bahama model is so much better than the competition, for several key reasons.

It’s nimble

Wirecutter performed beach chair testing on the beaches of California and Hawaii, and the Tommy Bahama chair came out the victor over seven competitors for its mix of durability, portability, and comfort. (No wonder the company has cornered the beach chair market .)

The Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair sitting on a sandy beach, with forested cliffs behind it.

But my long-term testing happens at the Jersey Shore. New Jersey beaches are packed, and it’s a true blessing to toss a chair on your back and run the gauntlet of guys from Philly and New York talking loudly on their phones about whatever sportsball team or political situation they’re mad about at the moment. The padded backpack straps are comfortable even if you’re not wearing a shirt, and they distribute the weight evenly—it’s a big contrast to having to lug a chair at your side, with it banging into your leg the whole time.

It can be all you need

While everybody else is packing like they’re trekking the Sahara, with umbrellas , coolers , and countless other supplies in tow, true sun-seekers who don’t need an umbrella (hopefully slathered in the recommended 1 ounce of decent-SPF sunscreen ) will be able to fit their refreshments in the chair’s attached cooler bag, which fits six 12-ounce cans. There’s even a towel bar on the back to hang-dry your wet towel and keep it off the sand. I’ve also seen plenty of city folk using these chairs for park hangs and suburban types bringing them to their kids’ sporting events.

It’s comfortable

The chair is made out of strong polyester, and it has five seated positions (you use the armrest to adjust it), a foam-filled headrest, and padded shoulder straps. The one downside is that it sits low to the ground, which can be an accessibility challenge. As a result, we use different, higher chairs for the older adults in our family.

Wirecutter’s guide says, “the only slight complaint we had is that the frame bar running along the front of the seat can push uncomfortably against your hamstrings during a long session in the sun.” However—as the guide goes on to say—the chair is low enough to the ground that even when your legs are splayed out flat, the inconvenience of the bar is minor.

It’s durable

The frame is made of lightweight-but-durable, rustproof aluminum with a recommended weight limit of 300 pounds. Our pick is the version that has wooden arms, which weighs about 7.5 pounds, though Tommy Bahama also has a less-expensive version with plastic arms (we’ve found that version doesn’t hold up as long as the wooden-armed one). “I’ve owned two wooden-armed versions of the Tommy Bahama since 2019. There’s no zipper damage on the cooler pouch or rust on the frame, and the fabric has held up incredibly well under the intense Hawaiian sun,” says senior staff writer Kit Dillon, who shot the photos shown here of his chairs on Oahu.

This year, I bought enough Tommy Bahama beach chairs that my family can finally have one per person. What are we going to do with our vast collection of castoffs? We’ll probably sell them to some bargain hunters at our next garage sale.

Questions and Answers

Why trust southern living.

Southern Living / Marcus Millan

Anyone who regularly hits the beach for rest and relaxation can tell you you won’t find any rest or relaxation if you don’t have the right gear . And topping the list of must-haves is the right beach chair. The best beach chairs are a combination of comfortable support, portability, and “nice to have” extras.

Andrew Kuttow , camping and RV travel blogger at RV Camp Gear, suggests looking for beach chairs with additional features that enhance comfort and convenience: “These may include cup holders, storage pockets, sunshades, and multiple recline positions,” he says.

To find the best beach chairs, we evaluated dozens of options on material, ergonomics, ease of use, features, and more. Kutton also weighed in on what makes the best beach chair for every type of beachgoer.

Best Overall

Tommy bahama classic folding backpack chair.

Comes with a strap for easy transport

Comes with a cooler and cup holder

Five different seating positions

Very low to the ground

When it’s time for a little fun in the sun (and sand), a comfy chair that’s easy to carry and has storage for beach day necessities is good. Finding all of the above at a reasonable price point is great. Ultimately, we found that this Tommy Bahama’s chair checks all those boxes and then some.

The body of this chair is made from a combination of materials, including aluminum, steel, and polyester, while sleek wooden armrests add a rich touch. Taken altogether, this chair is sturdy yet lightweight. Pair all of the above with functional design elements like a lay-flat towel bar, a storage pouch for dry items like sunscreen and phones, an insulated cooler pouch, and a detachable headrest, and you’re almost guaranteed a better day at the beach.

This chair adjusts to five different seating positions, including completely flat for naps or laying out. The cup holder accommodates a standard 12-ounce can, and when it’s time to pack up and go home, the padded backpack straps make your trip back to the parking lot easier. It also comes in a blue and green stripe version , as well as a patriotic red, white, and blue . Just keep in mind that this chair sits just 8.6 inches from the ground, which may make getting out of it difficult for some.

Size: 32 x 25 x 23 inches | Weight: 7 pounds | Capacity: 250 pounds | Materials: Aluminum, steel, polyester, wood | Extras: Towel bar, storage pouch, cooler, cup holder, adjustable headrest

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Homevative folding backpack beach chair.

Has a variety of extra features, like a towel bar

Extra padding on the side

Has a higher seat

It’s a bit difficult to open and close

If a backpack beach chair at a reasonable price is high on your list of summer must-haves, Homevative’s Folding Backpack Beach Chair is certainly short-list worthy.

This chair is chock full of beach vacation favorites like a rear towel bar, a rear insulated cooler and storage pouches, and a side cup and cell phone holder. The lace-up seat and extra side padding will keep you comfy while you’re soaking up the sun. This chair is easily adjustable to any of five positions, including a lay-flat position for that beach day nap. And as a bonus within a bonus, the towel bar doubles as head support when you’re reclined all the way back.

When the sun goes down and it’s time to head home, this beach chair is easy to carry, courtesy of its lightweight design (it weighs just 7 pounds) and the padded backpack straps. Plus, it sits slighter higher than the Tommy Bahama chair, with a 10-inch seat height. Just note that it can be a little stiff to open and close, but this is a small concession to make given the price and numerous features.

Size: 33 x 25 x 17 inches | Weight: 7 pounds| Capacity: 240 pounds | Materials: Aluminum, polyester | Extras: Cooler pouch, storage pouch, cup/cell phone holder, towel bar, headrest

Best Reclining

Strongback low g recliner beach chair.

Has built-in lumbar support

Doesn’t sink into the sand

Lacks storage pouches

While good posture and proper spinal alignment aren’t top of mind for most people on beach day, you’ll probably find that back support matters as you roll into hour four.

With its sleek, ergonomic design and lumbar support, the Low G Recliner eliminates tension so you can focus on your tan. Not only does this chair have a generous 20-inch wide seat, but it’s also specially designed to align your hips and eliminate leg pinches. This chair features a compact design and sits just 4 inches from the ground. And the extra-wide feet elegantly handle uneven surfaces (like sand) and resist sinking.

While this chair skips storage pouches and insulated coolers, it does feature durable padded armrests with easy-to-clean, removable covers and a built-in cup holder. In this chair, beachgoers will find a black powder-coated steel frame that’s durable and sleek paired with heavy-duty, wear-resistant polyester. And when the day is done, this chair folds up compactly for an easy return to its carry bag with backpack-style carry straps so your hands are free to tote other items.

Size: 24 x 20 x 23.5 inches | Weight: 8.6 pounds | Capacity: 300 pounds | Materials: Polyester, steel | Extras: Built-in cup holder, carry bag

Rio Beach Extended Height Beach Chair

Extra-wide armrests

It offers more legroom than other options

Lacks a headrest

Sitting 17 inches off the ground and featuring a higher backrest, this Rio Beach chair is perfect for those looking for a little more legroom. Made with a rust-proof, heavy-duty aluminum frame, and durable polyester, this beach chair weighs only eight pounds, but it can accommodate up to 250 pounds.

This chair reclines to four different positions and uses Safe-Adjust technology to minimize finger pinches while you’re making needed adjustments. It’s equipped with extra-wide armrests for plenty of elbow room, a built-in cup holder, a cell phone slot, and a bottle opener. Beachgoers will also find an insulated storage pouch with a mesh pocket on the armrest for stashing cell phones and other necessities when it’s time to hit the water.

This chair features a compact folding design that doesn’t eat up a lot of trunk space and adjustable padded shoulder straps that help you carry the load. Keep in mind, though, that this chair doesn’t have a headrest.

Size: 39.5 x 28 x 27.8 inches | Weight: 8 pounds | Capacity: 250 pounds | Materials: Aluminum, polyester | Extras: Molded cellphone holder, bottle opener, molded drink holder, insulated pouch

Best Low-Profile

Kingcamp low sling beach chair.

Still has back support despite being low to the ground

Comes with a travel pouch with shoulder strap for easy carrying

Doesn’t recline

Lacks additional storage compartments

For those who prefer to sit closer to the sand, KingCamp offers an excellent low-sling option. While this chair has a low seat that sits just 8.6 inches off the ground, rest assured it’s not short on anything. It features a high back and a generously sized 23-inch wide seat for maximum comfort, and while it weighs just 6.6 pounds, it can accommodate up to 300 pounds.

This chair features a rust-resistant steel tube construction, durable Oxford fabric, and wide, sturdy feet that handle sand well. You’ll also find a comfy, breathable mesh with plenty of back support, as well as soft foam armrests and a cup holder. This chair folds down compactly for easy storage and transport, and you’ll certainly appreciate the shoulder strap on the walk back to the car. Overall, this chair is a nice option for beach day, but without storage pouches, you’ll have to bring a beach bag .

Size: 25.2 x 23.2 x 24.8 inches | Weight: 6.6 pounds | Capacity: 300 pounds | Materials: Oxford fabric, steel | Extras: Cup holder, carry bag

Best Lightweight

Helinox beach chair.

Weighs just over 3 pounds

Has ventilated mesh panels for increased airflow

Doesn’t have a lot of extra features

Walking in sand isn’t easy. Walking in sand with an extra 10 pounds is even harder. All of this to say, weight matters when you’re looking for beach chairs. At just over 3 pounds, this chair by Helinox is a great lightweight option.

Made from a high-tech aluminum alloy, this chair is both durable and lightweight—and can accommodate up to 320 pounds. It sits low to the ground and features a taller seat that cradles you as you sit back, while its mesh design boosts breathability and the splayed legs prevent sinking—all of which add up to exceptional comfort. And at the end of the day, it’s easy to pack up and carry.

While this chair checks the boxes for comfort and ease of use, it may not be budget-friendly for most, and in the absence of beach day extras like storage pouches and cup holders, it might be a hard sell for some.

Size: 31 x 23 x 28.5 inches | Weight: 3.3 pounds | Capacity: 320 pounds | Materials: Polyester mesh, aluminum | Extras: Side pockets

Best With Shade

Gci outdoor pod rocker with sunshade.

Has a retractable canopy

Versatile; can be used as a camping chair or yard chair

Heavy compared to other chairs

Vitamin D by way of the sun is good for you, but a day at the beach can amount to too much of a good thing. To get your share of sun rays when you want them and a bit of shade when you need them, GCI’s Outdoor Pod Rocker is a nice option. For sun protection, the Pod Rocker has a generously sized retractable canopy (it can rotate front to back and can collapse flat), complete with UPF 50 shade.

Made from sturdy powder-coated steel, this full-size collapsible rocker is a little heavy at just over 13 pounds, but it’s robust enough to accommodate up to 250 pounds. Other nice-to-haves include a rocking sling-style seat, breathable mesh panels to keep you cool, a side phone pocket, and a cup holder. And when beach day is over, this chair collapses easily and folds up compactly for storage, and the storage bag has a large opening that offers an easy assist.

Size: 34.7 x 30 x 28.2 inches (not including shade) | Weight: 13.2 pounds | Capacity: 250 pounds | Materials: Alloy steel, fabric not specified | Extras: Retractable canopy, combo beverage/phone pocket, carry bag

Best With Footrest

Sport-brella recliner chair.

Comes with both a detachable footrest and umbrella

Has lots of storage and extra features

Reclining feature is finicky

Sport-Brella’s Recliner Chair is jam-packed with a lot of beach day needfuls, including a footrest, and while you might think that means premium pricing, that’s not the case here—this beach chair comes with a very reasonable price tag.

Standout comfort features include three reclining options (including a lay-flat option), a UPF 50+ umbrella with a three-way swivel for easy adjustments throughout the day, and a detachable footrest. For convenience, it includes an insulated pocket, a cup holder, and a zippered storage pocket with a built-in bottle opener.

This chair features a durable steel construction, so while it’s not the lightest on our list, it can hold up to 250 pounds, and we expect it to be sturdy and good for at least a couple of years. A durable mesh panel for breathability and air circulation, foam padding in the armrests, and a carry bag for easy transport round out a nice list of features.

Size: 54 x 34 x 34 inches | Weight: 12.1 pounds | Capacity: 250 pounds | Materials: Steel, polyester/polypropylene/nylon | Extras: Detachable footrest, UPF 50+ umbrella, cup holder, storage pouches

Best Inflatable

Wekapo air lounger sofa.

You don’t need a pump to inflate it

Provides plenty of support

Comes with two large pockets

Hard to get in and out of

If you’re looking for something to make your next trip to the beach a little more fun, Wekapo’s Inflatable Lounger is a great choice. Designed with fun in the sun in mind, this air sofa provides seating (and a bed when naptime calls) without the structure, weight, or hard lines. Even better, you don’t need any bulky equipment to get it up and running. Just whisk the lounger through the air to inflate it. Parents, if you ever wished the kids would help with the setup, this is your answer.

Made with an outer layer of Ripstop polyester, this lounger weighs less than 3 pounds, but it can hold up to 550-650 pounds. This inflatable lounger has a pillow-shaped headrest that gives your upper back and neck plenty of comfortable support. Plus, it’s outfitted with all the things you’d find with a standard beach chair, including two large pockets for your favorite beach reads and an elastic bottle holder. This air couch can stay inflated for up to six hours, and when the day is done, the carry bag helps with storage and transport.

Size: 82 x 27 x 35 inches | Weight: 2.7 pounds | Capacity: 550-650 pounds | Materials: Polyester | Extras: Carry bag, bottle opener, stake, storage pockets, bottle holder

Best for Kids

Baby delight go with me venture chair.

Accommodates toddlers and older kids

Removable snack tray

Comes with locks for additional safety

You can’t adjust the sun canopy

When the little ones are in tow on the family beach vacation , parents can rest easy with Baby Delight’s Go With Me Chair. This kids’ beach chair features a five-point removable harness, a removable snack tray and sun canopy with UPF 50+ sun protection, and a flared leg design with locks for added safety.

Parents will be happy to know that this adjustable kids’ beach chair grows with them, accommodating toddlers through big kids up to 75 pounds. This chair is made with indoor/outdoor polyester, so it resists stains, fading, and mold, and a carry bag helps parents get the chair from point A to point B with ease. Parents should know that while the canopy can be removed, it’s not adjustable, which limits its functionality.

Size: 24.5 x 23 x 22.8 inches | Weight: 4.9 pounds | Capacity: 75 pounds | Materials: Metal not specified, polyester | Extras: Removable harness, removable snack tray, removable sun canopy

Best Face Down

Ostrich chaise lounge.

Comes with four different seating positions

The face cavity can be opened or closed

Lacks storage compartments

While it’s nice to enjoy a little fun in the sun, a day at the beach is also the perfect opportunity to take a nap or read a book. With the Ostrich Chaise Lounge, you can lie on your back or your stomach comfortably thanks to the face cavity, which can be opened or closed. Just open it when you’re on your stomach so you can keep reading that page-turner, then close it when you’re ready to flip over to your back. It also comes with arm holes so your arms don’t have to be at an awkward angle while you’re your stomach.

This chair has an easy setup and four reclining positions, plus comes in a range of fun colors. When it’s time to leave, simply fold the chair up and use the strap to carry it back to your car. Even though this chair lacks storage compartments, it’s still a must-have for any beach day, especially if you’re a reader. Size: 22 x 72 x 12 inches | Weight: 9.8 pounds | Capacity: 250 pounds | Materials: Polyester, alloy steel | Extras: Carry strap, face hole, arm holes

Best Lounger

Kingcamp folding chaise lounge chair.

5 reclining positions

Removable pillow and side pocket

Easy to carry

Heaviest option on our list

Take your beach day experience to the next level with the KingCamp Folding Chaise Lounge. Thanks to the ergonomic design and double bungee system, you’ll stay comfortable for hours on end. Whether you choose to recline, lay flat, or sit up in the chair, the five-position locking system keeps the chair in the preferred position. Plus, the removable pillow offers the right amount of support to your neck and head, eliminating any tension.

Instead of storing your belongings in a separate bag, you can keep them in the removable side pocket, and access them whenever you need to. For beach-goers who like to frequently move around, this lounge chair comes with a securing strap for easy transport, as well as a carry strap and shoulder strap.

Size: 23.2 x 13.5 x 74.8 inches | Weight: 14 pounds | Capacity: 264 pounds | Materials: 600 D Oxford fabric, alloy steel | Extras: 5-position locking system, removable pillow, removable side pocket, securing strap

Our pick for the best beach chair is the Tommy Bahama Classic Lay Flat Backpack Beach Chair . This chair is lightweight, sturdy, and finished with elegant touches like wooden armrests. Functional design elements like storage pouches, a detachable headrest, and backpack straps make this one a win on beach day. The Homevative Folding Backpack Beach Chair is a close second, with many of the same features of the Tommy Bahama but at a slightly lower price point.

Tips for Choosing the Right Beach Chair

“The material type plays a crucial role in the durability and longevity of a beach chair,” says Kuttow. He says beachgoers should look for “chairs with high-quality finishes that offer some degree of protection against UV and water damage.”

Beach chairs are available in a wide variety of materials, including aluminum, steel, wood, and plastic frames, often with polyester fabric. When shopping for beach chairs and ultimately choosing one type of material over another, keep in mind that the materials have implications for their use and performance. While wooden beach chairs are durable, they are not as durable as ones made with aluminum or steel. Plus, wooden beach chairs also require more maintenance and care. Similar to how rust can ruin a steel beach chair, moisture, sand, and the sun can ruin your wooden beach chair. Therefore, after each use, you will have to remove sand and wipe off moisture. Furthermore, it’s also recommended that you apply wood oil to the chair every so often to preserve its natural color. When it comes to aluminum and steel beach chairs, they are much more durable than wood. Plus, they require less maintenance and care than wooden beach chairs. Once you’re done using an aluminum or steel beach chair, all you have to do is wipe off any excess water. While these chairs are durable, they are still susceptible to rust and corrosion. To further protect steel and aluminum beach chairs, it’s also recommended to apply a special coating to them. Beach chairs typically come with a polyester seat. This type of material is popular among beach chairs because it’s durable, lightweight, and retains its natural color for a long time. Polyester is also moisture-resistant, which helps to keep the beach chair dry. Look for polyester that comes with UV protection to extend the lifespan of your chair.

Portability

“A good beach chair should be easy to carry and store,” says Kuttow. “Chairs with folding designs are ideal as they provide ease of portability. This is an important feature to consider, especially if you are planning to walk a significant distance from your parking spot to the beach or have limited storage space.”

Some beach chairs come with a shoulder strap, while others have backpack-style straps. It’s better to purchase ones with backpack straps because they make carrying your beach supplies much easier. It’s also good to find a beach chair with a foldable design. Not only do they take up less space, but these types of chairs are easy to set up and break down. Plus, once the summer season is over, you can easily store them in your garage for safekeeping. We also recommend selecting beach chairs that come with a storage bag. Rather than carrying your beach chair by hand, the storage bag helps you to easily transport the chair.

Support is key when you’re sitting at the beach for hours on end. So when shopping for your next beach chair, choose one that offers plenty of back support (bonus points for chairs with lumbar support, such as the Strongback Low G Recliner Beach Chair ). It’s probably not a bad idea to look for a chair with multiple reclining positions and a lay-flat option for beach day naps. You could also consider purchasing a chair with a headrest, footrest, or a face hole. A headrest will offer the proper support to your neck and head, which is good if you plan on sitting for long hours at the beach. With a footrest, you can prop your feet up, and also reduce the strain on your lower body. Another supportive feature for beach chairs to have is a face hole. For those who like to lie on their stomachs, a face hole is an essential feature because it reduces strain on your neck.

Extra Features

The best beach chairs come with nice-to-haves that make your outing better. According to Kuttow, these may include cup holders, storage pockets, sunshades, and multiple recline positions. Some chairs on our list also feature headrests, towel bars, cooler bags, built-in openers, built-in umbrellas, armholes, and removable pillows. There are also beach chairs that can transform into a cart, which makes transporting your beach supplies to and from your car much easier.

How much do beach chairs cost?

Beach chairs are available for every budget. While compiling this list, we found that beach chairs ranged in price from a budget-friendly $40 to splurges at $180. Our best overall pick, the Tommy Bahama Classic Lay Flat Backpack Beach Chair , falls right in the middle of this range, proving you don’t have to splurge to get a quality beach chair.

Can I use my camping chairs at the beach?

While camping chairs can be used at the beach, beachgoers should manage their expectations. Camping chairs are light and portable, but that’s often where their utility ends as far as the beach is concerned. More often than not, these chairs lack beach-friendly features like rust-resistant frames, water-resistant fabrics, storage options, and sun protection. Beach chairs, on the other hand, are built with all of the above and therefore tend to offer beachgoers a better experience.

How do you keep beach chairs from rusting?

While beach chairs that have aluminum and steel in them are durable, they are also prone to rust or corrode. If you have an aluminum beach chair, it’s recommended that you dry it off completely after each use. Any moisture that is left on the chair can cause it to corrode. We also recommend purchasing an umbrella for your beach chair, because this will protect it from the sun’s UV rays. On the other hand, if you have a steel beach chair, we recommend coating it with an anti-rust oil.

The 12 Very Best Beach Chairs

Portrait of Katherine Gillespie

In this article

  • Best overall
  • Best chaise
  • Best cart chair
  • Best vintage style
  • Best cushioned
  • Best packable
  • Best quad chair

The right beach chair (plus a cooler , towel , and umbrella ) can turn any stretch of Jacob Riis into a not-so-private beach club. Or, a little less ambitiously, just keep your wet butt off the sand. To find the comfiest and most durable beach chairs to see out the rest of your summer, I consulted beach enthusiasts and outdoor-gear experts, then tested out their recommendations for myself alongside fellow beachgoing Strategist staffers. These picks for the best beach chairs should cover all kinds of beachgoers — from casual day-trippers to season-long sun-worshippers. As you get comfortable, just don’t forget the sunscreen .

What we’re looking for

A long-lasting, worthwhile beach chair should have a body made of metal — specifically aluminum, which is more salt resistant and takes longer to rust. Likewise, the seat should be constructed from hard-wearing, ideally marine-grade fabric that won’t rip, rag, or stretch after a summer’s worth of salt, sand, and UV rays.

A good beach chair should be relatively lightweight and easy to carry. If you’re navigating your way to the Rockaways by bike or a series of buses and trains, you might desire a more packable beach chair that will slip into a tote or backpack. With a vehicle, you have considerably more options. Of course, if you’re hauling a lot of beach chairs and other supplies, a sturdy beach cart is always worth the investment.

I looked for chairs with coolers, reclining backs and footrests, and even optional canopies — in case your beach umbrella just isn’t cutting it. Because comfort sometimes means minimalism (not everyone wants to lug a chaise longue up and down Long Island), I found a few chairs that’ll simply keep you off the sand in a fairly relaxed seated position. For all these chairs, I looked for a weight capacity of at least 250 pounds.

Best beach chair overall

Telescope Casual Original Mini-Sun Chaise

Materials: Aluminum and wood folding frame | Weight: 5.5 lbs | Comfort: Four reclining positions, towel rack, optional shade canopy

Our favorite beach chair by far is Telescope Casual’s Original Mini-Sun Chaise. Telescope is a fifth-generation family business founded in 1903 in New York City. It’s the oldest, most experienced manufacturer of beach chairs in America, and the company uses a unique telescoping process (hence the name) that extrudes the aluminum and makes for a far stronger chair. So strong that these chairs are known to last a decade. Pulling the handles back and forth adjusts the chair among four positions — one of which is completely flat. There’s a towel rack on the back of the chair, and while the chair doesn’t come with backpack straps, it weighs less than six pounds, so it’s easy to carry around. These chairs are expensive. But like we said, they’ll last a decade. It’s worth noting that Eytan Benzeno, who founded one of the first online beach outlets back in 1999, calls this the Rolls-Royce of seating. “Once you’ve had one, you would spend the money again,” he says. “It’s really for connoisseurs.”

Best (less expensive) beach chair

Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair

Materials: Aluminum and steel folding frame | Weight: 7.8 lbs | Comfort: Five reclining positions, storage pouches, backpack straps, optional canopy

If you’re not in the market for a Telescope chair, there’s always Tommy Bahama — a tried and true beach brand that makes one of our favorite less expensive beach umbrellas . Admittedly, there’s a certain aesthetic to these chairs. When Bobby Graziose closed on his house in the Rockaways, his broker left him two as a present. “When we got them, we were like, ‘Oh God, Tommy Bahama,’” he remembers. “Then we started walking around and saw everyone else had them.” That’s because (if you can get over the “vacationing dad at Margaritaville” look) they have really convenient backpack straps and two sizable back pouches — one of which is a very rare insulated cooler that fits about six cans. The frames are aluminum (so they won’t rust), the chair lies completely flat, and a drink and cell-phone pouch hangs off the armrest. Graziose was so taken that when he opened Beach Tripper (his former company that offered beach-chair and umbrella rentals along Rockaway Beach), he bought Tommy Bahama chairs to rent out to his customers.

Best beach chair with multiple accessories

Sunflow Beach Bundle

Materials: Aluminum folding frame | Weight: 9.4 lbs (without accessories) | Comfort: Four reclining positions, backpack straps, optional accessories

I originally tested out this Sunflow chair (a Shark Tank success story) under the assumption that it was essentially a slightly cheaper imitation of our favorite Telescope recliner. Indeed, the two chairs are similar in the way they feel to lounge on, and both designs utilize rust-resistant metal and marine-grade fabric. The Telescope chair is more lightweight and elegant looking, but Sunflow sells a much larger range of optional accessories. As well as a sun shade, you can clip a water bottle holder, dry bag, pillow, and even sunglasses case onto the chair, thereby keeping all of your beach-day essentials within easy reach. This makes it a great choice for anyone who truly commits to lazing on the sand all day without getting up. You could definitely finish your book while reclining on this chair.

Best utility-cart beach chair

MacSports Beach Day Lounger

Materials: Polyester, aluminum, and plastic folding frame | Weight: 20.9 lbs | Comfort: Four reclining positions, wheels, turns into storage cart

Strategist contributing writer Margaret Eby transformed her beachgoing experience with this combination utility cart and beach chair featuring oversize plastic wheels that can conquer both boardwalks and sand. The chair’s handle, she explains, “is sturdy and easy to maneuver, and once I steer it to my preferred destination, I set up my blanket and unload the cooler, beach tent, towel, and my overstuffed tote.” In order to fully convert the chair, you simply “detach the mesh walls, flip the bottom down to make a footrest (a rare feature for mobile loungers), and adjust the trolley into a chaise.” Unlike with many beach chairs, Eby writes that this one accommodates all bodies: “As a fat person, I’ve found many other beach chairs to be uncomfortable or flimsy, but the Mac Sports chair is roomy and well-built. And while I’m usually only transporting beach supplies for my partner and me, I could see it coming in handy if you had kids or a larger group — per the product description, it can hold up to 100 pounds in cart mode.”

Best beach chaise

Ostrich Chaise Lounge

Materials: Steel folding frame | Weight: 9.8 lbs | Comfort: Four reclining positions, face cavity, head pillow

For that true vacation feel, you can’t overlook a chaise. Strategist contributor and longtime beach-head Bianca Buchanan told us that this one, which has three reclining positions, “folds up really well, despite the fact that it’s very large,” and has a strap, so you can carry it around. Once unfurled, it has a hole for your head — “like one you’d see on a massage table, so you can lie on your stomach and tan ,” Buchanan explains. It doesn’t get much more relaxing than that.

Best cord beach chair

Ita Leisure Chair

Materials: Powder-coated aluminum folding frame and PVC cord seat | Weight: 13 lbs | Comfort: Low-profile recliner

Chelsea Rizzo and Allison Levy, co-founders of women’s outdoor-gear brand and New York City–based hiking club Hikerkind , pointed us to these delightful low-rise chairs from Ita — the first ever Black-owned outdoor-furniture brand. The chairs collapse into stackable squares and can be popped into position in less than one minute. They are thoughtfully crafted from powder-coated aluminum, which should hold its own against rust even in salt and sand, and designed to last. “I’ve made the bad decision before of buying the cheaper, heavier thing,” says Rizzo. “What we love to promote is buying intentionally with a purpose, then using it forever.”

Best sand lounger

L.L.Bean Beach Lounger

Materials: Polyester and aluminum | Weight: 6 lbs | Comfort: Padded armrests, drink holder, carry strap

I love the preppy look of this stripey blue-and-red L.L.Bean beach chair designed for the boat-and-tote crowd . The brand sent me one to test, and I’ve found it to be both sturdy and comfortable, with considerably more butt room than other brands and styles have. The stadium-seat-like design is somewhat hybrid: an adjustable reclining backrest with an elongated footrest that stretches you out directly on top of the sand. The armrests are padded, which adds a significant degree of comfort, and one of them features a discrete drink-holder sleeve. While this chair is not small, it’s compact and light enough to carry using the included shoulder strap.

Best vintage-style beach chair

Lawn Chair USA Webbing Chair

Materials: Aluminum folding frame | Weight: 4.2 lbs | Comfort: Webbing seat

Simple and old-school, these classic chairs are a favorite of New York City–based photographer and regular daytripper Jennifer Trahan . She keeps two of them in her car “at all times.” The chairs are deceptive: They look appealingly retro and come in many different colors but have an updated construction with slightly stretchy UV-resistant webbing — meaning the seat isn’t uncomfortably stiff. Nor will it sink to the ground. An aluminum frame, meanwhile, makes the chair plenty durable in coastal conditions. These are available in high-back and low-rise styles.

Best cushioned beach chair

Sunday Supply Co. Beach Chair

Materials: Aluminum folding frame, fade-resistant fabric | Weight: 5.7 lbs | Comfort: Carry strap, storage pocket

This low-rise fixed-recliner chair features slimline detachable cushions for a little extra comfort — and it’s available in an array of pleasing colors and prints that can be coordinated or contrasted with the brand’s line of vintage-style beach umbrellas . I was sent one of these to test out, and I’m a fan of both the aesthetic and comfort level — with the disclaimer that I’m fairly petite and didn’t feel like there was much room to move around once I was sitting. Larger butts, beware. Undeniably cute, the chair is easy to fold up and carry and even comes with its own canvas dust bag for storage. It feels durable, too, with a powder-coated aluminum frame and waterproof, washable, and tear-resistant cushion covers.

Best packable beach chair

Helinox Chair One

Materials: Aluminum pole frame | Weight: 2.2 lbs | Comfort: Slingback style

Taking the train? Here’s a chair that’ll fit in your beach bag. Brian Rottman and Bryant Jimenez, graduate students in the University of Oregon’s Sports Product Design program, told me that Korean brand Helinox has been at the forefront of ultralight chair tech since the early 2010s. The Chair One comes in two parts: a set of lightweight shock-cord aluminum poles and a seat that slings over the top. Packed down, the chair is a little larger than a Nalgene bottle. Set up, it’s a comfy, low-rise seat that’s perfect for a few hours on the sand.

Best (more affordable) packable beach chair

ALPS Mountaineering Simmer Camping Chair

Materials: Steel frame | Weight : 4.4 lbs |  Comfort : Slingback style

More affordable, though double the weight of Helinox’s Chair One, is this slingback seat beloved by  Strategist writer Dominique Pariso . She used it as a beach chair all last summer — “everywhere from Riis to Brighton Beach and on trips to Fire Island.” This chair’s Hydro Flask–size bag clips on to a tote bag and is, therefore, much easier to lug through the sand than the Tommy Bahama recliner Pariso used previously. And the seat is made from ripstop nylon mesh that’ll dry very quickly.

Best quad-style beach chair

Coleman Portable Camping Quad Chair With 4-Can Cooler

Materials: Steel collapsible frame | Weight: 8.4 lbs | Comfort: Cooler, drink holders, storage pouch

Our favorite camping chair is perfect for the beach, as it’s designed with a roomy insulated cooler sleeve that can store a day’s worth of drinks and snacks. While many big-box-store quad chairs are created equal, Coleman’s stands out for being larger in size and padded for comfort while still plenty affordable. In addition to the cooler, it has a handy side pocket — so you won’t have to leave your phone and wallet in the sand. Travel journalists and photographers Berty and Emily Mandagie, the husband-and-wife duo behind the outdoors-focused website The Mandagies , have recommended this chair to us in the past. More than 38,000 five-star Amazon reviews glow with praise. As one happy customer writes, “There’s plenty of room in the seat. I can sit crisscross applesauce in it. It’s sturdy enough for my kids to sit on my lap without feeling like it will tip, dip, or break.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.
