Drive Time Calculator

How to use drive time calculator, estimated time of arrival, travel time to home, meet the creator of the drive time calculator.

The drive time calculator – also known as the travel time calculator, is our innovative tool created exclusively for drivers. It helps you find out the estimated time of arrival (ETA) at your car trip destination and determine the fuel costs of the journey.

So, if you are planning a vacation trip with friends in a seaside resort or would like to estimate the travel time to home by car, check out our drive time calculator!

Our drive time calculator covers every aspect of your trip: it calculates the total time needed to complete your journey, predicts your arrival time at the destination, and determines the overall cost of the drive, including the cost per person.

To accurately determine your arrival time and the total driving duration, follow these steps:

Before entering any values, choose your preferred units of measurement , where applicable. For instance, you can opt for imperial or metric units when specifying distances. This selection will determine how the calculator interprets your inputs.

Enter the total distance of your trip.

Specify your average driving speed during the trip.

Enter the total duration of breaks you plan to take during the journey.

Specify the departure time , day, month, and year.

Upon entering these details, the tool will calculate the total driving duration and exact arrival time based on your input.

If you're interested in determining the costs associated with your trip , use the second section of the calculator and follow these steps:

Specify your car's fuel consumption rate .

Indicate current fuel price .

Input the number of passengers traveling with you.

The calculator will subsequently determine the total drive cost and the cost per person based on the provided information.

For example , consider a scenario where you must drive 140 km (87 mi) at an average speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). You plan to take a 30-minute break, and your departure time is January 22, 2024, at 7:00 pm. In this case, the calculator would compute a total drive time of 2 hours and 15 minutes, estimating your arrival at the destination on January 22, 2024, at 9:15 pm.

Moreover, if your fuel consumption rate is 8 liters per 100 kilometers (62 miles) and the fuel price is $0.90 per liter, the total cost of your journey would be $10.08. If you're traveling with a companion, you could split the cost, resulting in $5.04 per person.

🙋‍♂️ If you need to be at a specific destination by a particular time and are wondering when to depart, our calculator has you covered — it works in reverse, too! Here's how to use it:

Input when you intend to arrive at your destination in the variable arrival time .

Enter the total distance you need to cover.

Specify the average driving speed you plan to maintain.

If you plan to take breaks during the journey, enter the total duration.

The calculator will determine the optimal departure time , ensuring you reach your destination as planned!

Have more questions about the estimated time of arrival? Keep reading.

Estimated time of arrival (ETA) is the time when a vehicle, ship, aircraft, or cargo is expected to arrive at a particular place.

For example, a particular cruise bus may have an ETA calculated based on the expected average speed on a particular road. The travel distance is simply divided by the speed to roughly estimate the arrival time. This method does not consider any unexpected events (such as car accidents on the road or bad weather conditions) that may occur on the way to the driver's destination.

Visit our speed calculator to learn more about how to calculate speed.

Let's assume we are driving home with friends from a winter vacation in the mountains.

The distance to our home city is 850 km .

We are driving with an average speed of 110 km/h .

We will make three short 15-minute breaks and 1-hour long dinner break, which gives:

Total time of breaks = 3 × 15 min + 1h = 1h 45min

We will start the trip on the 21 February 2018 at 10:00 am.

Now, the most interesting question – when will we be at home? Let's calculate the total drive time:

Total drive time = (distance/average drive speed) + total breaks time = 9h 28min

Arrival time: 21 February 2018 at 07:28 pm

Now, we want to know how much this journey will cost us. With our drive time calculator, the answer to this question is very simple!

  • Let's assume that our SUV car takes 9.5 liters of fuel per 100 km.
  • The gasoline price is €1.22 per liter.
  • We are traveling as a group of 4 friends -> Number of passengers = 4

The answer to the question is below:

Total drive cost = (distance/100) × car fuel consumption × fuel price = €98.52

Drive cost per person = total drive cost/number of passengers = €24.63

Super! Now, we know all we need – the exact travel time to home with an estimated arrival time and how much each passenger needs to pay for that journey. Let's start the engine! 🙂

We also have a great tool called traffic density calculator that helps you analyze the traffic on any road.

Check out the gas calculator , too, if you need to estimate the fuel cost for a drive.

I'm Filip, the mastermind behind the drive time calculator, and I'm a biomedical and electrical engineering graduate from AGH University of Krakow.

My motivation to develop this tool emerged during a road trip, where the challenges of planning a long journey, including costs and time uncertainties, became evident. In response, I envisioned a solution — a tool that calculates travel duration and considers essential factors like fuel costs. The outcome is a user-friendly tool designed to simplify journey planning , whether for extended trips or daily commutes.

Why trust this tool? We put extra care into the quality of our content so that they are as accurate and reliable as possible. How do I calculate the average speed for my trip?

To calculate your average speed for your trip, you must note the trip distance and drive time or travel time and follow these steps:

  • Subtract the total time used for breaks from the drive time.
  • Divide the trip distance by the difference obtained in step 1.
  • The value calculated is the average speed for the trip.
  • Verify your result with our drive time calculator.

How fast can I reach Boston from New York driving at 60 mph?

It'll take 3 hrs 35 mins without any breaks. Allowing for a 15 min break, it'll take you 3 hrs 50 min. Here's how you can calculate this answer:

If you take the I-90 W, Boston is 215 miles from New York.

Divide this distance by the average speed to get drive time without breaks:

215/60 = 3.5833 = 3 hrs 35 min .

Add a 15 min break to drive time for a convenient and safe drive to get a total drive time of 3 hrs 50 mins .

Verify with our drive time calculator.

How do I calculate mileage of my vehicle?

To calculate the mileage of your vehicle, follow these steps:

  • When refueling, note the initial odometer reading and the amount of fuel you're filling.
  • When you stop for fuel again, note the final odometer reading .
  • Subtract the initial odometer reading from the final reading and divide the difference by the amount of fuel used.

How far can you drive in one day?

Assuming you drive for 8 hours in a day at 60 mph, with 15 min breaks every 2 hours and an hour-long lunch break in between, you can drive 390 miles . To calculate this answer, follow these steps:

Calculate total break time :

15 min + 60 min + 15 min = 1 hr 30 min .

Subtract this from 8 hours to get 8 - 1:30 = 6 hr 30 min .

Multiply this time with 60 mph average speed to get the distance traveled:

60 × 6.5 = 390 miles .

Verify this result with our drive time calculator.

LRT STATIONS & SCHEDULE (LRT 1 and 2)

 alt=

Metro Manila commuters are familiar with the convenience and fast speed of traveling on the LRT’s Line 1 and 2. Also called the Light Rail Transit Line, this is one of two rapid transit systems currently running in Metro Manila.

Originally called the Metrorail and the Yellow Line, the seeds of the LRT were planted in 1977 when the multinational consultancy Freeman Fox and Associates suggested constructing a street-level rail system in the metropolis. This was revised to an elevated system, and construction of the line started in 1981 – a year after the creation of the LRTA (Light Rail Transit Authority).

The first LRT segment opened in 1984, making this line the first rapid transit service in Southeast Asia. Currently, there are plans to extend the line into Cavite and form connections to the MRT.

Tips For LRT Commuters And Contact Details

If you’re tired of wasting time on traffic-choked roads, the LRT 1 or 2 lines may be the superior way to get to your destination. Keep these basic tips in mind so you won’t languish in long queues and stay safe while riding the LRT.

Here’s a video of LRT 1 and 2 from Tour from Home TV

• Avoid rush hour. Let’s face it: if you know the LRT is fast, so do busy working professionals and students. Either steel yourself to get in line early so you can avoid jostling during peak hours, or leave later.

• Secure your valuables. The last thing you want is to lose your cell phone or wallet in a crowded train. Keep your items securely in your bag and always keep that bag close to you.

• Have a Beep card. If you take the train often, it’s a good idea to get one of these reusable, reloadable cards. This will save you time from queuing for a single-use ticket.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the LRT 1, you can send them via email here: [email protected]. You may also call them at (02)53185777. For feedback and queries concerning the LRT 2, send them an email at [email protected].

A travel time reliability-based approach is proposed to assess the effect of the light rail transit (LRT) system on the road network within its vicinity. A 4-mile stretch of the Blue Line LRT extension, which connects the Old Concord Road and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) main campus in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC), was considered as the study corridor. The raw travel time data was collected from the Regional Integrated Transportation Information System (RITIS) website at one-minute intervals. The average travel time (ATT), planning time (PT), buffer time (BT), buffer time index (BTI), and planning time index (PTI) were computed for each link, referred to as Traffic Message Channel (TMC) in this research, by day-of-the-week and time-of-the day. Further, the travel time reliability of the links on the LRT extension corridor and adjacent corridors (both the parallel route and the cross-streets) were computed for different scenarios: network without LRT, testing phase of LRT, first month of LRT operation, third month of LRT operation, sixth month of LRT operation, and ninth month of LRT operation. The travel time reliability of the alternate route and cross-streets was affected by the LRT system operation. Increased green times and better coordination on the LRT corridor and the benefits associated with the alternate mode/route choice for commuters may be the reason behind the steadiness in travel time performance measures due to the LRT. The methodology and findings help transportation planners and engineers in comparing the performance or efficiency of large-scale public transportation projects like LRT and bus rapid transit (BRT) on travel time reliability within its vicinity.

What’s distance & time.

It’s a logistics application created to estimate distances and times between sea routes under particular parameters.

How it works?

You insert your origin and destination and then the system displays data about distances and time estimates from SeaRates database.

What’s the information based on?

Open sources combined with information from various shipping lines and nautical agencies. This information has been collected for over ten years and is regularly updated.

Get your planning under control

Few professional shipping companies are able to answer this question “When will I get my shipment?” to the client’s satisfaction. Our transit time system lets you fill this gap in seconds The clean interface is visually appealing and easy to use. Keeping track of your delivery time is important if you want to provide clients with accurate estimates after order placement. This is what we’ve been doing at SeaRates for many years and are now sharing with the rest of the world!

Distance & Time made simple

Often customers are given a very rough estimate of their delivery. “It will take two to four weeks”, for example, or “it can be delivered by Friday if you place your order in the next 12 hours”. This gives a frame of reference to the customer, but all other things being equal, given a choice between several companies with similar prices, the customer will choose the one with the fastest delivery service. So precise information is always preferred, since it is often necessary to prepare or be personally present for the delivery. Not to mention that properly timing your delivery is crucial to avoid work gaps in production. Save yourself some unwanted trouble by installing our Distance & Times tool to help you compete in the marketplace!

Usually the transport companies integrate the app with Logistics Explorer to also provide customers with instant shipping rates from/to anywhere in the world. It can also be enhanced by Route Planner to also schedule shipments easier and track sea lines

Distance & Time

Make your site better by integrating tools from searates, shipping distance & time calculator.

Distance & Time is web application, which allows to calculate distances and transit time between two points using different modes of transport.

Travel Time

Time spent traveling during normal work hours is considered compensable work time. Time spent in home-to-work travel by an employee in an employer-provided vehicle, or in activities performed by an employee that are incidental to the use of the vehicle for commuting, generally is not "hours worked" and, therefore, does not have to be paid. This provision applies only if the travel is within the normal commuting area for the employer's business and the use of the vehicle is subject to an agreement between the employer and the employee or the employee's representative.

  • Transit Time Calculator

Instant transit times, so you don’t have to wait.

  • What is Shipping Transit Time?

Shipping transit time refers to the time elapsed between when a product is picked up by the carrier and then delivered to its destination. It is often expressed as three separate parts: pick-up, transport, and delivery. The total shipping transit time has an impact on your business's supply chain management because it can affect inventory shortages and stock-outs.

Shipment transit time is dependent upon many variables such as weight, size, distance traveled and mode of transportation used.

  • What Factors Affect Transit Time?

Shipment transit times are always changing due to external factors such as weather conditions and road closures that influence the most efficient route for carriers to take. Logistics professionals must constantly monitor these changes in order to ensure that products arrive at their final destinations when they are supposed to.

Use our transit time calculator to find out the estimated shipping time for your shipment. This calculator can estimate the duration of FCL, LCL, sea, trucking, and air freight along selected lanes.

To use this transit time calculator, enter the following details:

  • Country of origin and destination
  • Things to Consider When Using the Transit Time Calculator

The transit times are an estimate of how long it will take for your shipment to arrive at its destination. Your shipment may be subject to additional delays due to holidays, customs regulations, or mechanical issues with carriers that are out of our control.

Please note this is not a guaranteed delivery date. Our transit time calculator does not guarantee any delivery dates. This tool can only provide you with estimates based on available carrier information at the time the website is accessed. Pricing and availability will vary depending on customer location, country, mode of transportation, and service level since all rates are determined by origin and destination country regulations. Prices may differ for LCL shipments because they typically involve more than 1 shipping carrier.

Using this tool requires knowledge of your shipment's size, weight, and cube; the total number of containers required to ship your product; the container type (FCL or LCL) you will use to ship your product; and your preferred mode of transportation (air freight, ocean vessel, trucking or rail).

  • How Long Does It Take to Ship Freight Internationally?

The transit time for international freight shipments is always subject to change depending on various factors. For example, one shipment originating from China and traveling west across the United States, a distance of 8,924 miles (or 14,573 kilometers), would take about 12 days to arrive at its final destination in Texas when shipped by air freight. That same shipment would only take about 18 hours when transported by sea freight.

To give you a rough estimate, the transit time for international freight takes about:

1 - 3 days for express shipping 5 - 10 days for air freight 20 - 45 days for ocean freight

  • Ocean Freight Transit Times

The transit time for ocean freight varies depending on the mode of transportation used. The general rule is that shipments traveling on larger vessels take longer to arrive at their final destination than those traveling on smaller ships.

  • LCL (Less than container load) takes approximately 20 - 45 days, including about 3 - 5 days for loading and 4 - 8 days for port processing
  • FCL (Full container load) takes approximately 25 - 35 days, including about 7 - 10 days for loading and 7 - 12 days for port processing
  • Trucking takes approximately 2 weeks to reach its destination, excluding about 1 day spent at the receiving dock
  • Air freight takes just a few hours or even minutes depending on the distance traveled.
  • Average Transit Times in 2022

Delivery times vary depending on many factors such as weight, size, and distance traveled. However, as of 2022, the average delivery time for shipment by sea freight takes about 30 days to reach its destination. The same shipment would only take about 8 days to arrive when sent via air freight and just a few hours when transported by trucking.

As mentioned earlier, the transit time for international shipments also varies based on where they originate from and where they're going.

Complex characteristics and robustness analysis of urban rail transit network

Urban rail transit network plays a key role in urban transportation system as an important travel mode to alleviate traffic congestion. This paper is based on complex network theory, considering the factors such as departure interval to travel time as the weight of network connecting edges, using Space-L method to establish a weighted complex network topology model of urban rail transit considering interchange stations, proposing comprehensive evaluation indexes to identify the key points of nodes in the network, and analyzing the topological characteristics and robustness of the weighted complex network under random and intentional attacks by taking Xi'an city rail transit network as an example. The topological characteristics and robustness of the weighted complex network under random and deliberate attacks are analyzed. The following conclusions can be drawn from the example analysis of Xi'an urban rail transit network: (1) when attacking the network nodes, the deliberate attack causes more impact than the random attack; (2) the comprehensive evaluation indexes cover the node degree and meson number, which can be effective in the identification of key nodes of the network; (3) the Xi'an urban rail transit network is still in the stage of construction When the key nodes are attacked, the network is easier to be paralyzed, and the network robustness can be further improved by adopting protection measures for the key nodes when constructing the urban rail transit network.

Elektrostal is a fairly large industrial city, which is located near the Vokhonka River and almost 40-50 km from the eastern part of Moscow. There are a lot of powerful factories here, where many residents of Elektrostal work. They are perfectly combined with the most beautiful green boulevards, streets and parks, bright lawns and flower beds that adorn almost the entire town. It is picturesque due to amazing reservoirs and forests. It is worth learning more about the main attractions of Elektrostal, photos of which are in the article.

The city was founded in 1916 thanks to the construction of a metallurgical plant. Previously, this place was the natural boundary of Calm. To start construction, the labor of local peasants was used. In the middle of 1925 herebuilt the first railway line that connected Elektrostal with Moscow. After the onset of 1938, the village turned into a separate city.

It is noteworthy that during the Great Patriotic War, the Electrostal plants produced ammunition that was needed for victory. In particular, it is worth noting the production of the legendary Katyushas.

A new stage for the factories of the city began after the invention of atomic weapons. The local plant was on the list of the main production facilities of the nuclear industry. This led to the fact that in 1954 the production of fuel was launched, which was used for the operation of nuclear power plants.

In 1963, the cultural center "October" was built, and this was done by the masters of the Novo-Kramatorsky plant, named after Stalin. It featured a spacious auditorium that could seat more than 850 people, as well as a unique revolving stage for actors to change scenery in seconds.

At different times, eminent creative groups performed in this cultural center, as well as the Beryozka ensemble, famous at that time. It is noteworthy that even in our time the cultural center is actively functioning, and the square in front of it is considered the most beautiful place in Elektrostal with fountains operating in the summer. In mid-2013, it received the status of a city of labor and military glory.

There are many numerous monuments in the city that tell about the history of this amazing place: a monument to Nikolai Vtorov -the founder of the famous plant "Elektrostal" near the House of Culture, a monument to Tevosyan - the chief engineer, monuments to M. Gorky and K. Marx, a sculpture "Steelworker", a monument to Korneev - Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as a memorial and a monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan and on North Caucasus.

This is a fairly large and old factory in the city that specializes in the production of fuel for local gas stations. The plant is part of the structure of the company FC "TVEL" of the state corporation "Rosatom". The General Director of the enterprise is O. L. Sedelnikov.

This plant produces nuclear fuel, which is used by many nuclear power plants, transport power plants and research reactors, not only in Russia, but also in other European countries. The company has quality certificates OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001.

The museum of the plant presents its history, shows old photographs of the streets of the city, there are achievements of workers, as well as photos of significant people, there are many of the most interesting models produced at the machine-building plant. It also stores presentations showing the principles of the enterprise.

This temple - a landmark of Elektrostal - is a single-dome centric church, which is made in the style of Byzantine times. It was erected in the 20th century, in the immediate vicinity of St. Andrew's Church. The temple was designed by T. V. Trubnikov and V. A. Drozdov, according to the developments of which the iconostasis and interior were exactly designed.

The church plays the role of a baptismal church and belongs to the Moscow diocese. The main shrines of the church are the most ancient and valuable icons of Nikandor Gorodnoyezersky and the Great Martyr Panteleimon. In addition, particles of the relics of saints are kept here. Divine services are held in the temple only during religious holidays.

The local park - a landmark of Elektrostal is an ideal place where everyone can stay alone with nature, ride numerous attractions, and also spend time playing slot machines. The park is especially popular in the summer - it is full of families, youth companies and couples in love.

Especially for the summer in 2013, the park was re-planned, which made it possible to accommodate more modern entertainment and interesting playgrounds for young visitors. Swimmers will love the dragon and swans, and trampolines have been installed for more active children.

It is noteworthy that the prices in the local park are quite affordable: the cost of a ticket for various attractions ranges from 30-100 rubles. Today it is called "Wonder Park", and it is divided into a quieter "Quiet Alley" and "Entertainment Alley", where there is an inexpensive cafe, a summer stage, and also quite a lot ofattractions.

sights of electrostal

This cinema is very popular, so it can be called a landmark of Elektrostal. It is located in the shopping center "Elgrad" and consists of 5 spacious halls that can accommodate more than 800 people. To show 2D and 3D films, only modern equipment is used: Dolby Digital Surround EX and MasterImage acoustics, as well as huge screens with a special coating. In all cinema halls, very comfortable conditions for visitors were created: climate control and soft chairs.

In the foyer of the Cinema Gallery there is a play area, a fairly spacious cafe, fast food establishments (Suneki, Tashir-pizza, Rostiks, Kebab-tun, etc.) and popcorn- bar. This is an attractive local leisure center, where the residents of Elektrostal are shown all the latest cinema.

This is a whole complex where you can spend your free time pleasantly and profitably. In addition to the playgrounds, which are fully equipped for playing laser tag and paintball, guests are invited to visit a local cafe where delicious home-cooked dishes are prepared, a banquet menu, karaoke, as well as a relaxing sauna with a warm font.

What do tourists who have visited the city say? It is not tourist, but industrial. Attractions are quite specific, but overall interesting. Tourists were pleased with low prices.

Looking at the photo of the sights of the city of Elektrostal, you may want to go there and spendunforgettable weekend.

For Monday's solar eclipse, New York State, federal authorities issue travel alerts

If you drive the Long Island Expressway, you've probably seen the signs: “Solar eclipse Monday. Take mass transit.”

State officials are warning of traffic mayhem surrounding Monday's “Great North American Eclipse,” which will cut a 120-mile-wide swath of total darkness from Texas to Maine — including a portion of upstate New York.

It will only last for several minutes, and Long Island will reach about 90% totality. Still, statewide travel warnings have been issued that include unusually heavy traffic into Tuesday.

Suffolk police said Tuesday there were “no special preparations” being made to deal with traffic that day and Nassau police said they currently have no special advice for drivers.

But AAA issued a list of do's and don'ts for drivers, including: Keep your vehicle's headlights on; lower the visor to block your view of the sun; don't try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving; and don't pull over to the side of heavily trafficked roads to view it.

And, while NASA warns eclipse-rated glasses — thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses — are needed to safely view the eclipse, AAA reminds drivers not to wear them while driving.

The eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean and cross North America beginning about 2:10 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time and ending at about 4:36 p.m., transiting over Mexico, the United States and Canada.

In New York, the path of totality will cover a host of upstate areas, officials said, the largest among them Jamestown, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown and Plattsburgh.

Officials said tens of thousands have booked stays in many upstate locations in the eclipse path, including a host of small rural towns and villages.

That's where the bulk of any traffic concerns come in, with state officials warning of overburdened roads in locations not designed to handle it.

“Travelers are encouraged to arrive at their destination early and leave well after the eclipse has ended,” officials said in a notice posted to the state Department of Transportation 511 NY website.

In fact, AAA said its official car rental partner, Hertz, reported a 3,000% increase in advance bookings for locations in the projected eclipse path, with rentals beginning Saturday. Hotels in the eclipse path are reportedly 48% more expensive on average for eclipse weekend, AAA said.

Even the Federal Aviation Administration is warning of potential air travel delays, citing “possible impacts to air traffic and airports along the eclipse path” between 6 a.m. Sunday and Wednesday, April 10.

The National Weather Service is calling for sunny skies on Long Island and about 60 degrees Monday.

New transit option available for travel between Sudbury and Toronto

Flixbus expands new service to sudbury.

A bus travels on a highway with trees and rocks in the background.

Social Sharing

There's a new option to travel between northern and southern Ontario.

FlixBus has announced it is expanding its service to Sudbury. The company said the new route will offer bus service between Union Station in Toronto and the Ontario Northland Terminal in Sudbury with several stops in between.

"We are very pleased to add Sudbury to the growing list of cities and towns in Ontario that FlixBus serves," Richard Szeri, senior manager of network planning for FlixBus said.

"Customers in and around Sudbury can not enjoy convenient access to Toronto, including Pearson International, and transfers to Niagara Falls and the USA. We aim for FlixBus to become synonymous with bus travel in Canada."

  • Giant German bus company hits the highway in Canada
  • Is the bus back? Why these companies are betting Ontarians will travel this way in 2023

The company first started operating in Canada in 2022, focusing its service in southern Ontario.

Jonas Pearce, the government affairs and strategic partnerships associate with FlixBus, said offering more options for people to connect to southern Ontario from Sudbury is important to the company.

"A lot of people in the north travel to Toronto to take a plane for vacation … to go see a play or sports event or even just business meetings or medical," he said.

"This is really going to help them because it's been an under serviced market lately since Greyhound left."

'Getting people to their destination on time'

Greyhound Canada announced in 2021 it was shutting down all bus service permanently. Earlier this year, Flix North America Inc. , the Dallas-based entity overseeing operations for both Greyhound and FlixBus in North America, announced the "co-integration of both brands' booking platform, enabling a shared, extended intercity bus network."

Between Toronto and Sudbury, several stops will be made along the way, including Parry Sound, Port Severn and Waubaushene.

Pearce said the stops will be short for commuters.

"We really pride ourselves here of getting people to their destination on time," he said.

"To make that happen, we don't stop too long. It will just drop people off or pick people up from those areas so they can connect to Toronto or Sudbury as well."

The service launched this week.

Earthquake snarls air and train travel in the New York City area

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 4:36 PM EDT / CBS News

An  earthquake  centered in New Jersey and felt across the New York City region on Friday disrupted air and rail travel, with ground stoppages at airports in the New York City area and delays in train service.

Travel operations were momentarily halted Friday morning with ground stoppages at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens and at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, with crews working to resume normal air traffic operations. By early afternoon, the ground stoppage at JFK had been lifted.

Arriving and departing flights in Newark also resumed in the afternoon, but delays averaged roughly two hours,  according  to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The earthquake, which occurred roughly 10:20 a.m. Eastern time, had either a 4.7 or 4.8 magnitude and was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, 40 miles west of New York City,  according to the United States Geological Survey.

Newark airport is experiencing average departure delays of 43 minutes, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Inbound aircraft that are already airborne are delayed by about an hour. Inbound flights that have not yet taken off are being held until 12:30 p.m., according to the site.

Flights in and out of LaGuardia airport in Queens were also delayed, likely in order for airport staff to check for damage to the airport and runways and clear away any debris.

The ground stoppages and delays are not expected to last long.

Additionally, New Jersey Transit said it's experiencing up to 20-minute delays across its entire rail service system, in both directions. NJ Transit said it's inspecting a bridge for damage to ensure train travel is safe.

—CBS News' Kris Van Cleave contributed reporting.

It was the third-largest earthquake recorded in the area in the last five decades and the strongest in New Jersey i n more than 240 years , the USGS said. But with authorities reporting little or no damage, and minimal travel disruptions, people soon resumed their everyday lives.

Here's what to know:

  • New Jersey: Gov. Phil Murphy said there are limited reports of damage and "little to no injuries" in the state. The USGS recorded at least six aftershocks in the immediate area of the initial earthquake. In an area more than 30 miles from the epicenter, three neighboring homes in Newark were evacuated after residents reported structural damage, according to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé.
  • New York: Gov. Kathy Hochul said there were no "life-threatening situations" after the earthquake and no reports of damaged buildings . There was one report of a gas line leak, but so far there's no “major” infrastructure impact, state officials said . New York City Mayor Eric Adams also said there have not been any reports of injuries and told people to " go about their normal day ." Additionally, all aspects of the New York City transit system were operating safely, said Metropolitan Transport Authority CEO Janno Lieber.
  • Philadelphia: The Philadelphia Police Department received "over 200 calls" from 911 "in a very short period of 20 minutes," following the earthquake, according to Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel. But, there were no injuries reported in the city, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker said.
  • Connecticut: State officials did not report any significant damage. Emergency management officials said their operations center was partially activated as agencies inspected key infrastructure points.
  • Travel: Runways at the three main airports servicing the New York City area were inspected and cleared, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Port Authority also said there were no operational or physical impacts to the bridges and tunnels. Amtrak said its trains were r unning at normal speeds after restrictions were put in place for track inspections.
  • Widespread impact: The shaking was felt by millions of people across hundreds of miles of the Northeast — a phenomenon made more likely by a few factors, including the geology of the region itself, according to the USGS. Rocks in the eastern US are much older, denser and harder, making them more efficient conduits of the seismic energy released by an earthquake, allowing it to travel in a more potent form over longer distances, the USGS says.

Amtrak trains resume running at normal speeds

From CNN's Pete Muntean

Amtrak trains are back to operating at normal speeds after an earthquake in New Jersey on Friday, the company said.

It said it started inspecting its tracks shortly after 11 a.m. ET, and put speed restrictions in place throughout the region. Amtrak said it has now completed those inspections.

“As of 3:30 PM ET, All inspections have been completed and service has been restored to normal speed. Residual delays should be expected,” Amtrak  posted  on X.

At least 6 aftershocks recorded following New Jersey earthquake, USGS reports

From CNN’s Samantha Beech, Brandon Miller and Taylor Ward

There have been at least six aftershocks in the hours following the New Jersey earthquake Friday morning, according to United States Geological Survey data.

The initial earthquake was felt in northern New Jersey just before 10:30 a.m. ET, and the aftershocks were all recorded in the immediate area of the earthquake, USGS said.

According to USGS, the largest of the six aftershocks was 2.2 magnitude, recorded just after 1:30 p.m. ET.

Here's a timeline (all times are ET):

  • 10:23 a.m.: The initial 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred
  • 11:20 a.m.: 2.0 magnitude aftershock
  • 11:37 a.m.: 1.8 magnitude aftershock
  • 11:49 a.m.: 2.0 magnitude aftershock
  • 12:31 p.m.: 1.8 magnitude aftershock
  • 1:14 p.m.: 2.0 magnitude aftershock
  • 1:32 p.m.: 2.2 magnitude aftershock

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a social media post that "aftershocks of these size are normal and are not expected to cause further damage."

The governor said there have been no reports of injuries or damage.

See how people in the Northeast reacted when the earthquake hit

From CNN's Jeremy Moorhead and Sean Clark

When an earthquake rattled buildings across the Northeast Friday morning, stunned residents described initially thinking a passing tractor-trailer or freight train was passing them before they realized it was something more.

There were reports of the 4.8 magnitude quake being felt from Philadelphia to New York City, according to the US Geological Survey.

3 neighboring homes in New Jersey evacuated after reporting structural damage, offical says

From CNN’s Nic F. Anderson and David Goldman

Three neighboring homes in Newark, New Jersey, have been evacuated after residents reported structural damage following this morning’s earthquake, according to the local public safety director.

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé told CNN no injuries have been reported after firefighters responded to reports of damage at the homes in an area more than 30 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter.

He said 10 families were relocated from the buildings, including 25 adults and three children.

Fragé added that all Newark city buildings, including City Hall and recreation centers, are closed. He said the city is inspecting buildings for any potential damage and power outages.

Also in New Jersey’s Essex County, in Montclair, officials believe the earthquake caused a water main break, according to an update from the Office of Emergency Management for the Township of Montclair. The OEM said the water bureau is working to repair the line.

The Montclair OEM said authorities have conducted a damage assessment of the township and there are no signs of damage to the infrastructure and all schools and municipal properties report no damage.

Today's earthquake was the strongest in New Jersey in more than 240 years

From CNN's Elliana Hebert, Sara Tonks and Eric Zerkel

First responders arrive to inspect homes in Lebanon, New Jersey, on Friday.

The rare 4.8 earthquake that struck northern New Jersey Friday was the third-strongest to strike the state, according to CNN analysis of US Geological Survey data.

The Friday morning earthquake also marked the strongest since 1783, more than 240 years ago. Two 5.1 magnitude temblors are the only stronger quakes in the state — one in 1755 and another in 1783. Both happened before New Jersey became a state in December 1787, but happened in the geographic area that now comprises the state's boundaries.

The quake is the third-strongest to hit the Northeast in 50 years and the 10th-strongest of all time in the region, USGS data shows.

Earthquakes in New Jersey and the region are rare. There have only been 24 earthquakes of 2.5 magnitude or greater in New Jersey since 1700.

All aspects of New York City transit system operating safely after earthquake, MTA chief says

From CNN's Samantha Beech

All aspects of the New York City transit system are operating safely following this morning’s earthquake, the Metropolitan Transport Authority, which runs the city's subway and other forms of public transit, said.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said every part of the transit system operated safely during the earthquake, as well.

He said initial facility inspections have been completed, including inspections of the seven bridges the MTA operate.

“I want to emphasize those were designed to withstand much stronger seismic impact than we experienced today,” he added.

According to the  MTA website , MTA Bridges and Tunnels (B&T) serves more than 900,000 vehicles on an average day. In 2019, it carried more traffic than any bridge and tunnel authority in the nation — more than 329 million vehicles, the MTA says.

Lieber said MTA frontline staff have been directed to report any abnormalities in the system, but he said nothing had been flagged so far.

There's a low likelihood of aftershocks following today's quake, New York City's emergency chief says

New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zachary Iscol speaks at news conference at the New York City Emergency Management Department on Friday in New York.

There is a low likelihood of aftershocks following Friday's 4.8 magnitude earthquake that rattled several Northeast cities, New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zachary Iscol said.

Iscol, however, urged New Yorkers to remain vigilant.

“If you are outside during an aftershock, please move to an open area, away from buildings, trees and power lines. If you are driving, pull over to a safe location," he said at a news conference Friday alongside New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Iscol said there were no major impacts or safety events related to the earthquake, and added that New Yorkers can call 311 to report any damage.

The quake, he said, triggered the activation of the city's emergency response teams and prompted officials to issue guidance to the public.

“We activated our protocols for this earthquake, we immediately began coordinating with all city, state, federal and our utility partners. Public notifications were sent out both by Notify NYC and our wireless emergency alert system,” he said.
