A passport is required. U.S. passport holders must have a valid U.S. passport and a visa or an approved Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) to enter Korea. Most U.S. passport holders traveling to Korea for tourism or business purposes for less than 90 days can obtain a K-ETA.

Apply at the K-ETA website for 10,000KRW. The fee is non-refundable even if the application is denied. Travelers must apply for the K-ETA at least 24 hours prior to boarding a flight or ship bound for Korea. A visa required for all other purposes, including employment, teaching English, and for stays longer than 90 days.

To stay beyond the period of stay authorized upon entry, visitors need to apply for an extension with Korean Immigration. Individuals who overstay their authorized time without an extension are subject to fines that must be settled before they can depart the country.

Changes of status from one type of visa to another (from tourism to teaching, for example) are normally not granted in the Republic of Korea and must be obtained at a Korean embassy or consulate in another country after leaving Korea.

U.S. citizens must submit to biometric data collecting when they enter the ROK. Immigration officials will take index fingerprints and digital face photographs during passport inspection. Officials with government agencies or international organizations, and children under 17 years of age, are except from data collecting.

Active-duty U.S. military personnel with the U.S. Forces Korea are allowed to enter the Republic of Korea under the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). They must have the correct Department of Defense (DOD) identification and travel orders to be admitted. Every civilian accompanying the force (including DOD civilian employees, invited contractors, and family members) must have a valid passport and obtain an A-3 SOFA visa in advance.

Active duty military personnel should obtain a tourist passport prior to leaving the U.S. to accommodate off-duty travel elsewhere in Asia. Members of the Department of Defense with U.S. Embassy assignments must enter with diplomatic or official passports and the correct visas.

DOD personnel on official business must have DOD APACS country clearance, while non-DOD members on official business must have clearance from the State Department's eCC system. Active duty service personnel may enter the Republic of Korea on leave with DOD identification and orders.

Exit permits are not required to leave Korea. However, if a parent requests through the Korea Immigration Service that a travel restriction be placed on a child, the child is likely to be prevented from departing Korea.

Certain visas types including those granted to teachers and entertainment workers require negative HIV/AIDS test results. Republic of Korea immigration law also states that immigration officials may deny entry to individuals suspected of having communicable diseases.

Tourist Visa Policy for South Korea

According to the country’s tourist visa policy, foreign citizens from around 110 countries can visit South Korea for tourism without having to obtain a visa in advance.

Most visa-exempt visitors must have an approved South Korea ETA to enter the country for tourism, no matter the duration of their intended stay. This Electronic Travel Authorization is a multiple-entry visa waiver valid for 2 years from approval. It may be obtained through a simple online a pplication that takes just a few minutes to complete.

The length of visa-free stay for tourism permitted depends on the traveler’s nationality and ranges from 30 days to 3 months . Citizens of Canada may be eligible for up to 6 months.

Although it is not mandatory for around 20 of these nationalities to obtain a K-ETA in advance, we highly recommend it. Applying online in advance removes the need to wait in long queues to complete an arrival card at the border.

All other foreign travelers are required to obtain a tourist visa to enter the country, which at the moment must be applied for at the nearest embassy or consulate of South Korea.

A consular appointment for a South Korea embassy visa for tourism should be made well in advance of the intended date of arrival in the country, to ensure sufficient time for processing and approval.

An approved tourist embassy visa may be issued as a single or multiple entry visa for a short stay. It is also possible to obtain a tourist visa extension once in South Korea and before the visa expires.

The ETA for South Korea , called the K-ETA , is an Electronic Travel Authorization that allows the holder to visit the country without a visa. It simplifies the process of getting authorization to enter South Korea and has improved the country’s border security.

Holders of passports issued by around 110 countries and territories can complete a quick application form online to get a K-ETA for visa-free travel to South Korea. You must be a citizen of that visa-free country. Even if you are a residence permit holder from a visa-free country, your eligibility is determined based on the country that issued your passport.

Once the ETA application is submitted, you cannot edit your personal information. If there are discrepancies between the information provided in the ETA and your passport, you may be denied boarding or entry into the country. If you notice any mistakes in the ETA submission, it is best to submit a new application with the correct information.

The South Korea K-ETA program was implemented on a trial basis for select visa-exempt nationalities in May 2021. From September 2021 onward, it became mandatory for most eligible travelers.

An approved ETA for South Korea allows the holder to enter the country for purposes of tourism , to visit friends or family, to attend conferences or meetings, or for commercial activities, but not for gainful employment. It is valid for 2 years from the date of issue, and allows multiple entries to South Korea during its validity. However, suppose the passport used in connection with the ETA application expires in less than 2 years. In that case, the K-ETA approval granted will be valid only until the passport expiration date.

To complete the simple online South Korea ETA form, you need to provide basic personal, passport, and travel information . You must provide a valid email address to which the approved ETA tourist authorization is sent.

Applying for K-ETA at least a week before your intended arrival in Korea is recommended. Most applications are reviewed and approved within 72 hours but it may take longer.

Once approved, travelers are required to print a copy of the approved ETA visa waiver to present to border officials upon arrival in South Korea.

Temporary Exemption of K-ETA for Select Nationalities

From April 1, 2023, until December 31, 2024, it is not mandatory for certain eligible nationalities to have an approved K-ETA to enter South Korea. This exemption is being granted in celebration of Visit Korea Year.

The exemption applies to nationals of:

US (including Guam)

However, we still recommend that you apply for a K-ETA online in advance. Otherwise, you will be required to queue at the border to complete an arrival card. An approved K-ETA allows you to quickly pass through immigration and saves you time and hassle.

Additionally, if you already have a valid K-ETA issued prior to April 2023, you can still use it to enter the country and avoid the need to submit an arrival card application at a border checkpoint.

South Korea Embassy or Consular Visa Required

There are more than 130 countries that require a visa to visit South Korea, no matter the travel purpose or period of intended stay. ETA-eligible citizens who want to stay in the country in the long term and/or work or study there must also obtain a visa.

This type of document must be obtained from a government office of South Korea well in advance of travel, by making an appointment at the nearest embassy or consulate.

South Korean immigration regulations dictate that it is necessary to have an eligible passport with a minimum validity of 6 months from the intended arrival date, containing at least one or two blank pages, to apply for an embassy visa .

You may also need to provide a range of supporting documentation, including proof of funds and round-trip flights, depending on the type of embassy visa you require.

The South Korean embassy visa type required must be indicated on the application form , whether a student visa, business visa, tourism visa, transit visa, work visa, resident visa, or other visa option.

The K-ETA can be obtained in minutes through a simple online application and is valid for 2 years from approval. It allows multiple entries to South Korea during its validity.

While around 20 nationalities are temporarily exempt from the K-ETA as a mandatory requirement, we strongly recommend you obtain the authorization online in advance . Otherwise, you will need to spend time queuing at the border to complete an arrival card.

Additionally, most foreign nationalities do not need a transit visa to pass through South Korea, if the transit time is less than 24 hours and if they do not leave the transit area, at Incheon Airport.

Travelers arriving at all other South Korean airports may transit without a visa on the same calendar day if they remain within the airport transit area.

Below is the list of Korea visa requirements to guide those excited to tour Korea for cherry blossoms, Nami Island, K-pop, and telenovelas.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Original passport – 6 months valid from the date of travel. Should be E-Passport already with a chip-like image on the outside cover, old passport cannot be accepted by the Embassy. Submit original and Old passport if used in OECD countries within the last five years.
Photocopy of passport’s first page (ID page) and visa or arrival stamps to any OECD countries within the last 4 yrs
1 Passport sized picture with white background

Requirements as per qualification for Short-term Visas (C-3) for Tourists: Single Entry

Original Employment Certificate – Must include applicant’s position, date hired, compensation, address, date of certificate issuance, office landline number (cell phone number is not allowed), email address.

Things to Remember:

Other proof of funds such as land titles, Vehicle registration, Pension Certificate, Country Club or Golf Club, Stock Certificate, Time deposit certificate or other form of funds will only be the secondary supporting documents.
Applications are accepted Monday-Friday between 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM, while releasing of passports with visa results is between 1:30 PM-4:00 PM. Korean Embassy is closed on Philippine holidays and selected Korean holidays.
All visa applications are subject for approval. Visa processing takes 5 working days for first time travelers, and 3 working days for frequent travelers. There is no expediting processing.
All documents will remain confidential and will not be returned. Please make copies of submitted documents you may need.
Paste your recent passport size photo on the application form.
Submit documents to our office at least 21 days prior to your travel.
Remove all covers or jacket of your passports, Staple old and new passports together.
Visa Processing fee PHP 1,000 per passenger, non-refundable once application is submitted to embassy regardless if granted, denied or withdrawn.
Each applicant should submit the basic requirements and other requirements base on their status (ex. Employee, Businessman, Housewife, Student, Overseas Contract Workers, Senior Citizen or Retiree)
Proof of relationship must be attached along if travelling with family, such as Marriage Contract, Birth Certificate and etc
All applicants with unused tourist visa to the OECD member countries, will be considered as first time travelers, and thus, should apply at window 1or window 2.
For those who travelled to Korea, only those who have visited more than twice within 4 years will be considered frequent travelers.
If the embassy ask additional documents, upon submission of the new requirements the release of the visa will take minimum 3 additional days. The embassy will verify the new documents submitted.
All documents must be issued within 3 months on the date of application
Please refrain from using documents like Mayor’s permit and other business permits that is not under applicants name especially for Single proprietorship. If applicant declares ownership his/her names should be written in the business permit or other permits submitted in the embassy.
Applicants, who work as freelancer or for those who could not provide some documents like ITR, etc, may still submit their application but has a less chance of getting a visa.
Apply for visa prior to purchasing your airline tickets since visa issuance is subject for approval of the consul in charge.
The Korean Embassy will only categorized the applicant as frequent traveler if they have travelled within 5 years in the OECD countries. The original stamp and or old passports are requested to submit to us if the stamp or previous visas are stamped in the old passport. PLEASE NOTE: As of May 12, 2023, non-citizen, non-immigrant air passengers no longer need to show proof of being fully vaccinated with an accepted COVID-19 vaccine to board a flight to the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, non-citizens entering the country through land ports and ferries will no longer be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 beginning May 12.

Korean history is characterized by a series of rich dynasties and conquests by neighboring East Asian countries, particularly Japan and China. In 1910, Japan annexed Korea and established a 35-year-long period of colonial rule lasting until the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. Korean popular culture, including idol bands and television dramas, has captured the hearts of fans worldwide in a phenomenon known as Hallyu , or the “Korean Wave.” Korea has also hosted numerous global events such as the Summer Olympics (1988), the Soccer World Cup (2002; along with Japan), the G-20 Leaders Summit (2010), and the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. These major events, a source of pride and accomplishment, have intensified Korea’s push to have a first-rate infrastructure, hospitality, and transportation system.

Seoul, the capital of Korea, is a lively cosmopolitan city. The city is divided by the Han River, which is spanned by 27 bridges. Most international flights arrive at Incheon Airport, which is located about one hour from the city center. Traffic congestion, a persistent problem in Seoul, must be factored into arriving on time for business appointments. Punctuality is critical when conducting business in Korea, so you should plan to arrive at least 20 minutes early to any meetings or appointments.

Other important business success factoids:

Last names and titles: Always use Mr., Mrs., or any title (like Director) followed by the last name. Also appropriate is: Mr. LEE (last name, followed by the first name) Ji-hoon (two syllables of the first name); in this order.
Business cards: Your business cards say a lot about you and your business and are extremely important in Asian and Korean cultures. Hand them out using both hands (thumbs at the top corners of your card) while giving a gentle and slight bow, and avoiding too much direct eye contact. Never put a newly received business card away or in your back pocket. Rather, look at it for a moment and place it on the desk or table where you are meeting. Bilingual cards are best.
Handshakes: Unlike the firm Western-style handshake, Korean handshakes are typically gentler.
Cold calls are generally unacceptable and seen as culturally inappropriate and disrespectful.
Negotiating: A rigid negotiating style does not work in Korea. Koreans interpret contracts as loosely structured consensus statements, broadly defining what has been negotiated/discussed, but leaving room to permit flexibility and adjustment. Koreans are subtle and effective negotiators. See Chapter 3 of this guide for additional insights into negotiating.

Visa Requirements for U.S. Citizens

Starting September 1, 2021, the Korean government is implementing the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization website > K-ETA for foreign nationals entering Korea. K-ETA is a mandatory pre-travel requirement that must be applied for in advance by visitors who otherwise do not have a Korean visa (similar to U.S.’s ESTA program). K-ETA is valid for multiple trips over a period of 2 years and the application fee is 10,000 KRW/person. K-ETA is mandatory for nationals or citizens of 66 visa-waiver countries (including the U.S.) and 46 designated visa-free countries who plan to travel to the Republic of Korea.
Official travelers with Korean diplomatic visas are exempt from this requirement.

If planning to stay more than 90 days or for any purpose other than tourism or business, U.S. passport holders must obtain a visa before entering Korea. For U.S. citizens, a five-year valid multiple entry F-4 visa is issued. This visa holder can stay up to two years each time he/she visits the Republic of Korea until their visa expires.

Americans coming to Korea for activities such as employment, teaching English, or studying must obtain a visa at a Korean embassy or consulate abroad.

Cards with the Visa, Mastercard , Plus, and Cirrus logos are the most widely accepted in Korea.
CDs (Cash Dispenser Machines) only offer cash withdrawal services.
CD machines are located in subway stations, bus terminals, and department stores.
ATMs offer withdrawals, deposits, and fund transfers.
ATM transactions require an account with a Korean bank.
Paying via credit card on a Korean website generally requires credit cards issued by Korean banks.
Prominent Korean banks include Korea Exchange Bank (KEB) and Shinhan Bank.

To apply for a visa to South Korea, you will need to go through a few steps:

Check whether your nationality is in the list of countries that established visa-free movement regime with South Korea . In view of the current COVID-19 situation, the visa waiver for visa-free regime countries will remain suspended till further notice. You will need to apply for the Electronic Travel Authorisation (evisa) .

The Korean Embassy accepts applications from Singapore passport holders and foreigners holding a long-term residence in Singapore (DP, Student Pass, EP, WP and LTVP). Travelling to Singapore

Entry and Exit

Singapore passport holders are not required to apply for visas for short-term entry into the Republic of Korea (less than 90 days).

Travellers intending to travel to the Republic of Korea should refer to the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Singapore’s website for the latest entry requirements.

Safety and Security

Travellers should undertake the usual precautions and be responsible for your own safety. In addition, be mindful of your belongings (e.g. passports, credit cards and cash) in crowded places and areas frequented by foreigners. You may also download the free "Emergency Ready App", released by the South Korean government for more information on local emergency services, hospitals and emergency shelter locations.

Singaporeans should take extra precaution when hiking in the mountains, particularly at night. It would be best to go with a guide who is familiar with the route and terrain. There have been several incidents of Singaporeans getting lost in the mountains while hiking in the dark and requiring rescue assistance.

It is mandatory for foreigners to carry their passport or alien registration card at all times. Failure to produce either of the aforementioned when asked to by law enforcement officials is a chargeable offence. Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of drugs can result in long prison sentences and heavy fines.

Additional Information

Air quality varies throughout the year, and yellow dust pollution typically peaks during Spring. Depending on the levels of pollution, the South Korean Government may advise all, particularly the elderly and those with respiratory issues, to restrict their outdoor activities. The Korea Meteorological Service Website ( http://www.kma.go.kr/eng/weather/asiandust/forecastchart.jsp ) does provide pollution related forecasts, though this is typically only available from March to May.

Demonstrations do occur in major cities across the world. Such demonstrations can sometimes escalate into violence. It is important for Singaporeans to keep abreast of local news, avoid any protests or demonstrations and heed the advice of the local authorities.

When participating in outdoor leisure activities overseas, Singaporeans should be mindful that certain sporting activities, especially in open seas, may carry risks. Besides ensuring that one has the physical competencies and appropriate condition to undertake the activity, every effort should be made to ascertain if the trip organiser or guide is reliable and competent, and that appropriate safety and contingency plans are in place. When in doubt, Singaporeans should consult the relevant professional bodies or sporting associations for specific advice.

Advisory: Email Scams

There have been reports of individuals receiving scam emails/messages purportedly sent from friends in distress overseas. These emails/messages typically originate from an email address/social media known to the receiver bearing claims of the sender getting into trouble overseas and urgently requesting financial assistance. The sender would also claim to have approached a Singapore Embassy/Consulate and the local Police for help to no avail.

MFA takes the safety of all Singaporeans very seriously. Singaporeans in distress approaching our Overseas Missions for assistance will be rendered with all necessary consular assistance. If you receive such emails/messages from purported friends seeking funds transfers, we strongly advise you to call them first to verify the authenticity of the emails/messages before responding to their request. It is also not advisable to give out any personal information such as NRIC/passport numbers, address, telephone number, etc. Any form of reply, even one of non-interest, could result in more unsolicited emails. Members of the public who suspect that they have fallen prey to such scams should report the matter to the Police immediately. It’s so easy to fall in love with Korean culture, but the thing is we need to get a tourist visa for a vacation in South Korea. So, how do you get a Korean tourist visa, you ask? Here’s the detailed guide.

Why do you need a Korean visa?

Unfortunately, Filipinos can’t enter Korea visa-free. The good news is that it’s technically easy to apply for a visa and not to mention, it’s FREE. For this specific blog, we’ll be discussing how to get a tourist visa for Filipinos, a type of visa that is used for short-term visits to the country.

Korean Tourist Visa Requirements for Filipinos

Before sending in your visa application, you need to prepare the following requirements:

Korean visa application form

Accomplish the Korean visa application form that you can download here . Filling out should be done by computer, using the font Arial in size 12. Make sure to print this form on A4-sized paper.

1 piece of passport-sized photo

Your photo should be 35mm x45 mm, colored, full-faced, and on white background taken within the last six months. Paste it on the first page of your application form.

Your original passport

Your passport should, at least, have a six-months validity, and must not be deformed or defaced.

A photocopy of your passport’s bio page

Original and photocopy of valid visa/s or arrival stamps in oecd-member countries for the past five years .

If you’ve recently traveled to OECD-member countries such as Australia , Italy , Spain , or Switzerland you can include a photocopy of your valid visa in your requirements. View the full list of OECD member countries here.

Original Certificate of Employment (if employed)

Your COE must have your current position, date hired, compensation, and the contact details of your company, including the office address, your HR telephone number, and the HR email address. But if you’re a business owner, you need to present a separate set of requirements, which will be mentioned below.

Original bank certificate

You also need to present your personal bank certificate, which should have your account type, current balance, the opening date of your account, and your average daily balance.

Original or photocopy of your bank statement

Submit an original or certified true copy of your bank statement or passbook for the last three months.

Photocopy of your BIR 2316

Lastly, you also need to submit your Income Tax Return (ITR) or what’s commonly known as BIR Form 2316.

For Filipino business owners, you need to submit the following requirements:

A photocopy of your Business Registration from SEC or DTI
A photocopy of your Business Permit or Mayor’s Permit

For Filipinos who are invited to visit Korea:

Submit the invitation letter and a photocopy of the inviter’s passport, or the invitation letter and the Korean Company Business permit if invited by a company.

How to schedule an appointment with the Korean Embassy

Follow the steps below to schedule an appointment with the Korean Embassy.

Go to the Korean MOFA website: https://consul.mofa.go.kr/en/main.do .
Click the “Reservation to visit a diplomatic mission” icon under the Apply for a consular service tab.
Log in at the “Non-Membership” portion of the page.
Click Consent to All Terms and Conditions of Use, and click “Confirm.”
Enter your details accordingly: – Name as shown on the passport – Email address – Authentication Number (to be sent to the email address you provided). Click verify after. – Contact information
Click “Non Membership Log In.”
After waiting for a few minutes depending on web traffic, you’ll be redirected to a new page.
Choose the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of the Philippines or the Consulate General in Cebu, whichever you prefer to schedule an appointment with.
On Select a Diplomatic Mission, choose “Visa Individual Applicants for Tourism”, and then tick the box that says “Visa Individual Applicants for Tourism.”
Choose your preferred appointment date and tick the radio button 9:30 am which is the time allotted for individual applicants for tourism visa.
On the reservation details, enter your name or your family’s name with the passport number in the Special Request box.
Type the generated captcha, and click “Make Reservation.”
Confirm all details then click OK to proceed.
A Reservation page will appear. Save a copy and then print.
On your scheduled appointment, bring the following: – Printed or soft copy of the reservation – Completed visa application form – Required documents – Passport and valid ID

Korean Tourist Visa Application Tips

We’ve got a few tips for you to make your Korean tourist visa application as hassle-free as possible.

Ensure that you have an approved visa first, before booking a flight.
Walk-ins are not allowed anymore–scheduling an appointment is required.
You can only include your own, your parents, your children, or your spouse in group appointments. If you’re applying with friends, you need to schedule appointments individually.
The Korean Embassy opens slots every other Thursday so check on these days for scheduling appointments.
Your reservation confirmation must have your passport number or the name of the accredited travel agency. If it doesn’t, your appointment reservation may be canceled and denied.
