The U.S. Will Stop Honoring Expired Passports As of July 1 — What to Know

The rule was initially implemented to help travelers navigate delays in passport processing due to the pandemic.

The State Department will no longer honor expired United States passports next month, ending a pandemic-era practice implemented due to delays in processing.

Starting July 1, travelers will no longer "be permitted to use your expired U.S. passport to return to the United States," the State Department wrote on its website. Previously, U.S. citizens who were abroad were allowed to enter the country if their passport had expired on or after Jan. 1, 2020.

"If your passport has expired, please contact your nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to apply for a U.S. passport," the State Department added.

The rule was initially implemented to help travelers navigate delays in passport processing due to consulates and embassies being forced to cut back staffing. That led to an "unprecedented" backlog of passport service appointments.

In the U.S. alone, processing times topped up to 18 weeks and the State Department even removed the option to book last-minute appointments online for a time. Currently, passports are taking eight to 11 weeks to process, or five to seven weeks if travelers pay the expedited fee, according to the State Department .

Passport renewals have also gotten more expensive after the price increased by $20 last year. Now, it costs $130 to renew an adult passport, an extra $60 for expedited service, and an extra $18.32 for one to two day delivery.

While currently the most convenient way to renew a passport is by mail, President Joe Biden signed an executive order last year requiring the government to design a new digital system . Most passports expire after 10 years , but many countries require visitors to have up to six months of validity on their passports before traveling.

Travelers who do renew their passports now have the option to select an "X" as their gender on their application, indicating an "unspecified or another gender identity."

American citizens abroad who saw their passports expire during the Covid-19 pandemic are now able to return to the United States before renewing their travel documents, a shift of policy announced by the State Department on Monday.

The decision, which applies to Americans who are currently outside the country and hold passports that expired on or after Jan. 1, 2020, comes after reports that more than 100,000 Americans abroad are struggling to obtain consular appointments.

In many countries, American citizens who need to renew their passports must apply in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate. But many of those offices remain hobbled by Covid-19 restrictions and staffing reductions, and some are closed for all but emergency services. Difficulties and delays in getting appointments for renewals have left many Americans without a path back to the United States.

Some American expatriates have turned to immigration lawyers for help. Others have paid high fees to bootleggers and passport courier companies to obtain hard-to-get embassy appointments.

The State Department’s new exception for expired passports applies both to adults, whose documents are valid for 10 years, and to children, whose passports expire after 5 years. It applies only when entering the United States; travelers leaving the country will still be required to have current documents.

New parents should note that the exception does not apply to babies born overseas who have not yet been issued a passport or an official record of a child’s claim to U.S. citizenship, known as a Consular Report of Birth Abroad.

To take advantage of the exception, citizens must be in possession of their expired passport, and must be flying to the United States, either directly or on a connecting flight with a short layover. Expired passports cannot be used for travel from one foreign country to another.

All American citizens returning to the country must still show proof of a negative Covid-19 test result taken within 72 hours of departure.

It's not likely you can travel with an expired passport, as a passport is generally required for international air travel. It also doubles as a valid form of ID for domestic U.S. travel.

If you realize your passport has expired and you have immediate travel plans, you'll need to check the rules for the country you're visiting and quickly submit an application for a new passport.

Why do you need a passport to travel?

A passport is a standardized form of government identification for those traveling internationally, though it can often be used for identification purposes domestically, too.

Passports ensure that travelers are who they say they are when entering or leaving a country or in other situations when identification is necessary. In most circumstances, everyone entering or leaving a country by land, sea or air needs to have their own passport, even if they’re a child, toddler or baby.

Generally, U.S. passports must be valid for six months beyond the traveler’s departure date to enter another country. However, some countries allow entry to travelers with only three months’ validity on their passport, and others have different regulations altogether. It’s important to verify the country’s rules where you’re planning to travel to ensure you can enter.

How do you renew a passport?

Adult passports are valid for 10 years, and travelers can renew them by submitting an application to the U.S. Department of State.

If your passport has expired and was issued more than 15 years ago, you must apply for a new one. Child passports for those under 16 expire after five years and cannot be renewed.

To renew your passport, follow these steps:

Complete a passport renewal application ( Form DS-82 ).

Get passport photos taken.

Mail in your completed application and photos along with your current or expired passport and the required fees.

Currently, it takes up to 10 weeks to get a new passport or renew an existing one. However, there are ways to reduce the time it takes to get a new passport if you need it faster.

Expedited processing . By choosing expedited processing for an additional $60, your passport can be issued in three to five weeks.

Expedited delivery . Applicants can pay $19.53 for expedited delivery from the U.S. Postal Service. This upgrade delivers your new passport to you one to two days after it is mailed.

Urgent travel . This service is available by appointment at a passport agency and is for those with urgent travel plans within the next 14 days (or five days if you’ve already applied by mail). There is no fee for the appointment but spots are limited.

Emergency . In life-or-death situations that require travel within 72 hours, you may be able to obtain a passport the same day or the next day.

Passport expeditors or courier companies are another option to get your passport more quickly. These private, third-party companies are allowed to submit expedited passport applications on behalf of their customers. These agencies typically charge additional fees on top of the standard application and expedited service fees.

Can you fly with an expired passport?

Typically, travelers are required to have valid identification when flying. However, the rules can vary depending on whether you’re flying domestically or internationally.

Can you travel domestically with an expired passport?

A passport isn’t required for U.S. citizens traveling within the United States. If you’re flying within the U.S. and your passport has expired, it’s best to use another form of government identification. Forms of ID that are accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the airlines include state-issued driver’s licenses, state-issued ID cards and military ID.

If you’re traveling with an expired passport and don’t have one of the forms of ID listed above, you may still be able to fly if your passport hasn’t expired more than 12 months ago. However, you may be asked to show secondary forms of identification to prove your identity.

Can you fly with an expired passport to another country?

Traveling internationally requires a valid passport to depart the U.S. and/or return from a foreign country.

There are a few exceptions for passengers traveling within the Western Hemisphere. These include a NEXUS card when returning from Canada, a Merchant Mariner Document when traveling on official business or a Military Identification Card when traveling on official orders.

Traveling with expired passport rules during COVID

During the pandemic, the U.S. government issued a temporary order allowing those with an expired passport to fly home to the U.S. This rule granted travelers with passports expiring on or after Jan. 1, 2020, to return directly to the U.S. until June 30, 2022. This exception has since expired and is no longer valid.

What if your passport expired and you need to travel tomorrow?

If you’re traveling within three business days because of a life-or-death emergency of one of your immediate family members, you may be able to get a new passport the same day . Here’s how to get a passport quickly for next-day travel:

Get documentation of the emergency. This could be a death certificate, letter from a mortuary or a letter from a hospital explaining your family member’s condition. It must be translated by a professional if it’s not in English.

Obtain proof of your upcoming travel, such as an airline ticket or itinerary.

Complete a passport application and get passport photos taken.

Call the National Passport Information Center at (877) 487-2778 during business hours or (202) 647-4000 during non-business hours.

Explain your situation and why you need to travel right away.

If you qualify, the center will assist you in making an appointment at an eligible passport agency. Note that an appointment is not guaranteed.

Bring proof of the emergency and travel plans, your passport application and payment for all necessary fees to your appointment.

Flying with an expired passport recapped

Travelers must have a valid passport when traveling internationally. You Can No Longer Travel With an Expired US Passport

The pandemic-era policy has come to an end

As of July 1, 2022, the State Department has overturned a pandemic-era rule that temporarily allowed U.S. travelers to return home from overseas with an expired passport.

"If your passport has expired, please contact your nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to apply for a U.S. passport," the State Department wrote on its website.

The policy, which applied to passports that expired on or after Jan. 1, 2020, was initially implemented due to "unprecedented [passport] appointment backlogs" and subsequent processing delays. (In July 2021, expecting travelers could wait as long as 18 weeks to get their passports .)

While 18-week-long processing times are fortunately a thing of the past, it's best to fill out your renewal application ASAP if your passport is expired—or if the country you're visiting requires your passport to be at least six months valid after entry or departure. The State Department currently estimates that it can take eight to 11 weeks to process a passport application. However, if your trip is fast approaching, you can pay $60 to get your passport expedited in five to seven weeks.

If you're renewing your passport, you can expect your new travel document to look slightly different than what you're used to . Called the "Next Generation Passport" (NGP), the latest iteration of the U.S. passport will feature improved security features, including "a polycarbonate data page, laser-engraved personalization, and updated artwork."

Application fees for new and renewed passports also cost $20 more than pre-pandemic . As of Dec. 27, 2021, U.S. travelers 16 and up must pay $165 for a new passport (up from $145) and $130 for a renewal (up from $110).

Renew early. Passport processing times  vary. And some countries and airlines deny entry if your passport expires in less than 6 months.

Determine if you can renew your passport

If any of the following are true, you cannot renew your U.S. passport and must instead apply for a new passport in person using Form DS-11:

• Issued before your 16th birthday
• Issued more than 15 years ago

Passports can only be renewed by mail. Online renewals are currently paused. Because it can take up to three months to process your application, it is important to renew your passport before it expires.

Typically, you will need the following items to renew your passport:

• Find your local passport acceptance facility or regional agency and pick up a copy.

• Your most recent passport
• Name change documentation, if necessary

Can you still travel to the US on an expired passport?

The unusual policy originally applied to passports which expired on or after 1 January 2020.

In 2020, the US government brought in a new rule to help travellers. It was designed to remove a barrier to travel, at a time when tests, paperwork and quarantining made taking a flight a stressful process.

But that rule has recently been revoked, meaning US passport holders should urgently check their documents.

US passport validity rule scrapped

During the pandemic, the US State Department ruled that US passport holders could travel on expired passports.

The policy applied to passports which expired on or after 1 January 2020.

This rule was originally supposed to end in March of this year, but it was then extended until 30 June.

It was created due to "unprecedented [passport] appointment backlogs ". In 2021, some passengers had to wait as long as 18 weeks to get their passports.

But as of 1 July 2022, the State Department announced, those returning to the US will have to hold a valid passport in order to get past border checks .

"If your passport has expired, please contact your nearest US Embassy or Consulate to apply for a US passport," the State Department said in its website update.

How to renew a US passport

If your US passport is due to run out soon, the government recommends filling out your renewal application form as soon as possible. This is especially important if the country you are going to requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months for entry or departure.

Countries like Australia and Canada require your passport to be valid for the length of your stay, while others such as China , Thailand , Egypt and Turkey need at least six months.

How long do US passport applications take?

The US State Department estimates that it takes eight to 11 weeks to process a passport application at the moment.

But if your trip is fast approaching, you can pay $60 (€60) to get it expedited in five to seven weeks.

How are the new US passports different?

If you’re after a renewal, your next US passport is likely to look different to your old one. There are improved features on this one.

Called the ‘Next Generation Passport’ (NGP), this new iteration of the classic version has enhanced security features. This includes a "polycarbonate data page, laser-engraved personalisation, and updated artwork.”

And your previous photo will be transformed into a laser-engraved, black-and-white image, with the page itself set to become more durable.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that the new US passport is more expensive - at $165 in total, $20 (€20) more than before the pandemic, when it was $145.

As of now, this will only apply through June 30, 2022

Anyone whose US Passport expired after January 1st, 2020, may use that passport to return to the United States. This is a one-time permission per person, and the person MUST renew their passport in the US, prior to any additional travel.

You qualify for this exception if  all the following  are true:

• Your US passport expired on or after January 1, 2020
• You are flying directly to the United States, a United States territory, or have only short-term transit (“connecting flights”) through a foreign country on your direct return to the United States or to a United States Territory.
• Your expired passport was originally valid for 10 years. Or, if you were 15 years of age or younger when the passport was issued, your expired passport was valid for 5 years.
• Your expired passport is undamaged and unaltered.
• Your expired passport is in your possession.
• Your US passport expired before January 1, 2020
• You wish to depart from the United States to an international destination.
• You are currently abroad seeking to travel to a foreign country for any length of stay longer than an airport connection en route to the United States or to a United States territory.
• Your expired passport was limited in validity (such as an emergency passport, valid for 1 year or less).
• Your expired passport is a special issuance passport (such as a diplomatic, official, service, or no-fee regular passport).
• Your expired passport is damaged or altered.
• Your expired passport is not in your possession.

When traveling back to the USA on an expired US passport as detailed above, we strongly advise the following:

• Arrive at the airport about 4 hours prior to flight departure time, to allow for any potential extra processing or verification time.
• Be aware that upon arrival in the USA, there is a high likelihood that you will be required to undergo a brief secondary screening process from United States Customs and Border Patrol.

Urgent First-Time Passports and Children’s Renewals

If you need a passport urgently, either for urgent upcoming travel or for visa purposes, you can email either  [email protected]  or  [email protected] , to request an emergency appointment. The subject line should include the word URGENT and the reason for your request e.g. “Urgently need a passport for emergency travel” or “urgently need a passport for visa and insurance purposes”. Include the details (names, birthdays, and passport numbers) of all family members that will be attending the appointment, and attach all relevant documentation (expired visas, parents’ passports, and visas, child’s birth certificate, form DS-2029, and/ or paid ticket and proof relating to the urgency of your travel, etc).

Is it possible to travel abroad with an expired passport.

Over 80% of all countries globally mandate a valid passport for entry. Even if a foreign country does not require it for entry, a valid U.S. passport is required for all American citizens to re-enter the United States.

Therefore, an expired U.S. passport is not considered a valid identification document for international travel.

Can You Travel Abroad by Land or Sea with an Expired U.S. Passport?

The short answer is: No .

Traveling with an expired U.S. passport is not permitted as it’s not recognized as valid identification for travel. This rule applies to all modes of travel, including land, sea, and air.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a temporary policy that allowed U.S. citizens to return from abroad using an expired passport, provided it expired on or after January 1, 2020. However, this policy was discontinued as of July 1, 2022.

It’s important to note that recently expired U.S. passports cannot be used for travel from the United States to an international destination or for any stay longer than an airport connection en route to the United States or a U.S. territory.

Traveling by land to Mexico or Canada requires either a valid passport book, passport card, enhanced driver’s license or any other WHTI-compliant document for entry. The same is true for reentry into the United States.

A notable exception is travel by sea, depending on the type of cruise you’re taking . 

For instance, if you take a closed-loop cruise (starts and ends at the same U.S. port), you can typically exit and enter the U.S. without a U.S. passport. However, you must confirm this exception with the specific cruise you are taking, many cruise lines require guests to carry a valid U.S. passport for certain international ports and travel itineraries. So, while you may be able to board a cruise without a passport, you may be limiting your opportunities to enjoy everything the cruise has to offer.

On the other hand, all open-loop cruises (start in one U.S. port and conclude in a different U.S. port) require a valid U.S. passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining.

If your passport has expired or will do so within the next 6 months, it is advisable to apply for a new passport before planning any international travel no matter how you plan to get there—land, sea, or air.

When Can an Expired Passport Be Renewed?

Does a Child’s Passport Expire?

Yes. All passports issued to minors aged 15 or younger expire after 5 years. Passports issued to minors cannot be renewed .

If your child’s passport has expired, a new child’s passport application must be submitted. 

The process begins with the completion of Form DS-11 . Please note that the application should remain unsigned until requested by an agent at a passport application acceptance facility.

A minor's passport may not be renewed by mail; to renew a minor's passport, you need to submit a new, first-time passport application in person . An adult passport may be renewed by mail if it meets certain requirements.

W ith more bank holidays coming up, many of us are excited to leave the country. But before you set off, you’ll want to double check your passport.

We don’t mean check that it is definitely in your bag or pocket, but really pay attention to your passport details.

That’s because since Brexit , new rules have come into play and are now in effect for British travellers .

Since the UK has now left the European Union , travelling to Europe and the Schengen Zone comes with some complications, as UK passport holders are now’third-party nationals’.

This means that your passport now needs to be issued less than ten years before your arrival date to the destination.

So, now the issue date is just as important as the expiry date, meaning your passport needs to be less than ten years to the day you’re landing.

Before, you could travel with a passport that was out of date by up to nine months, (meaning you were able to use it for more than ten years).

Now, not only must your passport be less than ten years old, you also need to make sure it has at least three months remaining on its expiry.

Simply put, if you’re travelling to Spain on 5 May, you need to make sure your passport was issued after 5 May 2014 and expires no earlier than 5 August 2024.

Anyone who fails these rules will be turned away, which is already happening to some British travellers.

What are the new passport renewal rules?

These rules apply to Brits travelling to all EU member states, except Ireland. They also apply to other countries in Europe’s Schengen area, such as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, and Monaco.

Now, your UK passport must:

• have been issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the EU country (the date of issue)
• be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave (the date of expiry)

How can I check if my passport is still valid?

Check the date of issue on your passport – is it issued within ten years of the day you land?

Add three months to the day you leave the country – does your passport expire after that?

If the answer to the questions above is ‘yes’ then you don’t need to worry. But if it is ‘no’ then you’ll need to either apply for a passport renewal or get an emergency travel document (especially if your travel date is soon, or you get turned away at the airport).

How much is passport renewal in 2024?

You will need to renew your passport though the HM Passport Office , which allows you to renew it through the post or online.

You can use the online service to renew your passport at a cost of £88.50. You’ll need: a  digital photo ; a credit or debit card; and your old passport including passports to other countries.

You can get a paper application form by either going to a Post Office that has a  Check and Send service , or calling the  Passport Adviceline . This costs £100.

To renew your child’s passport, it’s slightly cheaper. Online, the service costs £57.50 – you’ll need a digital photo of your child, their old passport, any valid passports from other countries, and any court orders relating to your child.

You can also renew their passport by post, in the same way you would for an adult, which costs £69.

You can pay by either a debit or credit card – fill in the form in the application pack, or send a cheque made payable to ‘HM Passport Office’

You’ll need two new and identical printed photos of yourself.

What makes a passport invalid?

Other than passport issue and expiry date problems, there are other ways the document might be rendered invalid, for example if there is physical damage to it.

Vicky Pattinson was recently turned away at the airport when her passport was chewed by her dog, and there are ways a passport might be deemed invalid.

This can be if:

• Details are indecipherable
• The laminate has lifted enough to allow the possibility of photo substitution
• There’s discolouration of the bio-data page
• There’s chemical or ink spillage on any page
• There are missing or detached pages
• The chip or antenna shows through the end paper on the back cover for the new style e-passports
• The chip has been identified as damaged after investigation

If your passport is damaged and you have an overseas trip booked that’s shorter than a month away, you’ll need to use the  Fast Track service . This involves attending an appointment at a Passport Office (you can choose between Belfast, Durham, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Newport or Peterborough), where you’ll need to hand in a completed application form, two valid passport photos, and any supporting documents.

You’re guaranteed to receive your new passport in seven days but these appointments get booked up quickly – especially in peak season – so book one as soon as possible.

What happens if my passport is invalid?

The Consular Section at the British High Commission regularly receives panic calls from Britons at the airport – someone in the family was not allowed to board the flight because their passport expires in less than six months.

The British High Commission can help by processing an  Emergency Travel Document  (ETD). This costs £100 and is usually issued within 24 hours. Visas for ETDs may be required; some countries that allow visa-free entry on a regular passport will require a visa for an ETD.

As you can see, these scenarios result in added costs and unexpected delays, so check your passports ASAP.

Many times, when you go for US Visa Stamping at a US consulate, you may not have a passport valid for the entire duration for which the Consular officer issues a visa. For example, B1/B2 is issued for 10 years and you may only have like 5-year validity on your passport. This situation can happen to all kinds of visas like F1 Visa, H4 Visa, H1B Visa, L1 Visa, and others.

Now, when you get a new passport, you may wonder, if you can use the valid visa in your old passport and travel to the US or not. In this article, we will cover what are the official rules and how it works with a valid visa on an expired passport, including my personal experience on the same.

Official rule by the US Dept of State for valid US Visa in Expired passports

As per the US Department of State, the rule is very straightforward: You can enter the US using a valid US visa on an expired passport if you meet the below conditions.

• You need to have a valid passport, in addition to an expired passport.
• The issuing country of the current valid passport should be the same as the expired passport.
• The type of the current passport should be the same as the expired passport ( e.g. both have to be regular type. You cannot have one regular and one diplomatic or another type).
• Your visa has to be valid on the old passport that expired. It has to meet the purpose of the travel.
• The visa on the old passport should not be damaged and in good condition.
• You need to carry both of your passports – the current valid passport and the old passport with a valid US Visa.

Does the Airlines Travel Desk check Passports and Visa?

Yes, the airline’s travel desk person at the airport in your home country, who issues your boarding pass, or the security officer at the travel desk issuing boarding passes will check your US Visa validity and also passports. They will verify that you have both a valid visa and a valid passport and that you are carrying both passports. This is a pre-check before boarding a flight to travel to the US.

Does the CBP officer at the US Port of Entry ask any questions?

When you enter the US and go through the port of entry procedures , the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer would verify your visa in your old passport, scan it and validate the same. They will capture your current passport details as well.

They may or may not ask any questions about why you got a new passport. They would put in a stamp your new passport indicating your entry and visa type that you are entering the US and write annotation VIOPP, which means Visa In Other Passport(VOIPP).

Should you be worried, if traveling with an expired passport and a valid US visa?

There is no reason to worry as the rules and guidance from the US Department of State are very clear. As long as you meet all the conditions listed in above section, you should be fine. Make sure your passports and visa are not damaged and machine-readable.

Usually, the CBP officers ask questions regarding your travel and other general stuff. They may or may not ask about your expired passport having a valid visa. Below are some of the common questions they may ask:

• Where are you traveling to? which city, state?
• What is the main purpose of your visit? like studying, working, tourism, meetings, etc.
• How long will you be staying in US ? how many years, months or days?
• Where do you currently live? If it is your first time or are you living in US already?

Have two new Passports since Old passport with a valid US Visa – Can I still use?

Yes, your valid visa in the old passport that was given before stands valid. It does not matter how many new passports you have got after the old passport expired. The key thing to remember is that you have a valid visa in passport.

Personally, I had my valid B1/B2 visa on my old expired passport and I had two new passports that I got as I exhausted pages. When I entered the US at the Port of entry, I was able to successfully clear immigration and customs by showing a valid visa in my both old passport and my current valid passport.

In a nutshell, the number of passports between your old passport with a US visa and your current new passport does not matter.

Where is the Official rule on the US Dept of State Website?

The Official details and guidance on traveling to the US with a valid visa in an expired passport is under the “ Visa Validity” section at the US Dept of State website . You need to click on the + icon to expand the question.

See the below screenshot on how it looks. In general, rules can change and you must check the US Dept of State website for the latest and current updates before you travel and make any decision to travel to the US.

Experience: Traveling to the US with a valid Visa on Expired Passport

Background : I had a valid B1/B2 visa of type regular ( R ) from 2012 to 2022 and it was in the old expired passport that got expired in 2013. I got a new passport in 2013. My old and new passports are from India and of the same type ( regular ). The B1/ B2 US visa in the old passport was in undamaged condition.

I was traveling to the US after 4 years with my B1/B2 visa, which was valid, but in an expired passport. I did a lot of research to ensure I do not have issues at Port of entry (POE). I was kind of nervous leaving to the US after 4 years for a conference with my new passport.

Though I did my research, I was kind of thinking in my mind, if there will be any questions at the port of entry on the topic. I was just thinking if the system would recognize my passport and visa, etc…

Entering the US Port of Entry : There was no issue with the system detecting my passport or visa. The CBP officer did not really ask me anything about my old passport. I gave him both passports and he checked for himself and stamped the new passport with the entry date on it.

I was asked only a few general questions like where I was going, where do I stay, what is my purpose of travel, etc. but none of them related to visa validity or passport.

I was able to enter the US using the same valid B1/B2 visa in my old expired passport, successfully without any issues. Overall, though I had some questions in my mind until I got to the Port of Entry, there is nothing to worry about as long your US visa ( not just a B1/B2 visa) is valid and in undamaged condition in the same kind of passport given from the same country.

Common FAQs

There is no need to get a new visa stamp if the visa in the old passport is valid and not damaged. If your purpose of travel matches to the valid visa, then you can use the same.

If you really want to get a visa stamp on your new passport, you can. Nothing is stopping you from getting it. You would be eligible for dropbox Visa stamping or Interview waiver .

You need to remember 4 things : 1. You need a valid passport to enter the US 2. Your US Visa in your old passport is not damaged and is in good condition. 3. Your current passport must be issued by the same country as the old passport with US Visa. 4. Your expired old passport with US Visa must be of the same type as your current passport.

Also, depending on the port of entry, you may also have Kiosks to do all the processing for certain types of Visa types. My passport is set to expire in November 2024. Additionally, my approved I-797 is valid until October 2025. I have an upcoming visa stamping appointment scheduled for next month, in September 2023. Paramjeet, Well, I am not sure…Technically, you should be fine, if you carry both the documents….But, I suggest you email the embassy or CBP officer to get confirmation to be safe…

Hi! I have a valid b1/b2 visa and it is in my maiden name on my expired passport. I have renewed my passport and changed to my married name. Will I still be able to use my valid visa or do I need to get a new one? Rakesh, It should be fine in general. Yes, the online system will show the old passport number for your I-94, that’s normal. You can email the CBP on the stamp part of it in Old passport to be sure. Do update here after you write to them.

Yes, your US visa will be valid as long as it is not damaged. Your new passport will have small stamp that says visas valid.

Hello. I have a valid US visa on an expired passport. However, when I renewed my passport, the issuing authority put the birthplace as follows:

Expired Passport: XXX XXXX ZZZ AAA New Passport: XXX XXXX AAA ZZZ

Actually, both places are the same place and they were acronyms. I mean, you cannot really read them as they are. Note that birthplace are not written in the visa itself. When I applied for a new passport, the place actually comes in a dropdown menu with no abbreviations so me, as a citizen, does not have any control on how my government will abbreviate the place of birth on the passport.

I have consulted so many people (even travel consultants) on this and I even asked the US consulate – not officially but through a friend working there – if this will cause me any problem. However, all of them said “it will not have any problem”.

It should not have any problem. Logically, as long as you have your Old passport number in the new passport as reference, it should be fine. As long as your name and date of birth on Visa are same in both, you should be fine.

J Singh, Yes, they do. In fact, for mine, they even cut a corner of the passport page, where you have the photo, so that I cannot use it. Do not worry, as long as the US visa on the passport is valid, you are fine. You just need to carry all the old and new passports.

Per Hol, Technically, it should be fine as long as the US visa is valid. But, I do not know how it works when you have two passports. You can write to US embassy or CBP officer, just to make sure and confirm.

US Regulation states specifically that nationality must be the same for both passports, the one carrying the US valid visa, and the valid new passport.

Chintu, 1. There is nothing called visa extension. You apply for new visa, once it expires. The passport validity does not matter as long as the visa is valid. 2. No, you will need to get a new passport in US.

If you read the above article, it clearly tells that you can have valid visa in expired passport and it will work fine. Nothing to worry about extension of visa, as long as it is valid.

I have an expired passport with a valid US Visa. The front cover from teh passaport was damaged (kids…). The Visa page is in perfect state, just like my valid passaport…I have a scheduled business travel for US and not sure if the cover page off from the expired passaport will be a problem at the PoE… I have no time to issue a new visa on the new passaport 🙁

Josie, As long as they can read your details and passport number from old passport, you should be fine. You can always email CBP officer, if you are not sure. Also, do share your experience after visiting US.

Last time when my mom visited US, she had her VISA in her old passport. We presented both old and the new passport and they had no issues letting us in.

And if you see, the new passport has the old passport’s number in it. And I believe all this would be automatically updated in their systems???

Finally what matters is whats shown in their system. If its all green for them, they most probably will let us in, unless they have something to suspect.

How long does it take to get a Canadian passport in Metro Vancouver?

Travellers looking to renew their Canadian passport or get their first shouldn't face long waits and will get one with the new design. 

Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) told V.I.A. that most travel documents are processed within the standard service times in Metro Vancouver and generally don't experience waits. 

People can also use a simplified renewal process by submitting their old passports. 

Before submitting passport applications, Service Canada recommends that you ensure the application is correctly filled out and includes any necessary supporting documents. 

When should I think about getting my passport?

Service Canada recommends getting a passport before planning a trip in case of difficulties.

Don't wait until your passport expires to get a new one. Many countries require that your passport be valid for six months before you leave or for an extended and specific period after you arrive in some countries.

How long does it take to get a passport in Canada?

Applications at a passport office or a Service Canada Centre should be processed within 10 business days. 

Applications at regular Service Canada Centres, at regular mobile service sites, and by mail should be processed within 20 days. 

Service Canada notes that it has increased demand on a seasonal basis as popular travel times approach, meaning people may experience delays.

Service Canada also has a website that allows you to check  wait times before visiting a passport office.

What percentage of applications are processed in the standard time frames?

According to Service Canada, 92 per cent of applications, regardless of how they were applied, are processed within the standard service times.

"Certain types of cases, such as incorrectly completed forms or complex cases for other reasons, make up a significant portion of applications that take longer than the normal processing time," said the ESDC.

Will I get a passport with Canada's new design on it?

The new Canadian passport has enhanced security features that help prevent fraud and confirm the document's validity. It also celebrates the country's heritage and identity with new artwork, showcasing its natural beauty through the four seasons.

The new cover design features the outline of a maple leaf, which is the first "significant change" to the passport in decades, according to the government.

ESDC said all Canadians applying for a new passport will receive the latest design with updated security features. However, the old passports are still considered secure and reliable; they will not need to apply for a new one.

Do you need a passport to fly within Canada?

You do not require a passport to fly within Canada but need one for cross-border flights to the U.S. 

How can the mobile passport control app help with flights to the U.S.?

Canadians heading across the border can have a new option to submit their information digitally before flights.

Locals who plan to travel to the U.S. from Canada can submit their passport and customs declaration information through a free, secure app on their smartphone before they leave for a trip.

The U.S. Customer Customs Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app allows travellers to experience "shorter wait times, less congestion, and efficient processing," when crossing the border.

Is the 10-year passport surge affecting wait times?

The first 10-year passports were issued in 2013 and started to become eligible for renewal in July 2023.

For 2024-2025, based on IRCC forecasts, Service Canada expects to receive between 4.89 million and 5.40 million passport applications. While approximately 50 per cent of these applications are expected to be renewals, it does not expect delays. 

What about if you need to get your passport quickly?

If you plan to travel soon and need a Canadian passport issued immediately, you can apply for urgent or express service.

The urgent service will get your travel document to you by the end of the next business day, while the express option typically takes two to nine business days.

The urgent service costs an additional  $110 more than a regular passport  and the express option costs an extra $50. 

You must visit a passport office in person to take advantage of the urgent option and you may be required to show proof of travel.

Can I use the simplified process to renew an expired Canadian passport?

Canadians can use a simplified process to renew their expired passport if it was issued within the last 15 years of the date they apply. The simplified version is also available to individuals who lost their passports or lost or damaged them.

Renewing a Canadian passport is easier than applying for a new one. If you are renewing one, you will not require a guarantor (a person who can confirm your identity), proof of citizenship, or supporting identification. 

To renew your passport,  fill out the questions online  with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to see what steps you need to take next. The system will tell you to:

• give you all the forms you need
• tell you how to submit your application
• show the costs for different passport services

A recent study has revealed that the Indian passport ranks as the second cheapest passport to obtain worldwide. It holds the distinction of being the most cost-effective in terms of "cost per year" of validity.

Notably, an Indian passport holder can travel to 62 nations visa-free.

The UAE passport clinches the top spot as the most affordable passport globally, surpassing all others in terms of both acquisition cost and the number of countries offering visa-free access.

In its study, Australian firm Compare the Market AU conducted comparison of passport acquisition costs across various countries. It evaluated their cost-effectiveness per year of validity and their value based on the number of nations offering visa-free access.

According to a press statement from the Australian firm, the Indian passport incurs a cost of $18.07 for a validity period of 10 years, whereas the UAE passport requires a fee of $17.70 for a 5-year validity period.

While the Indian passport boasts a lower cost, its visa-free access is comparatively limited. This stands in contrast to countries like Australia, the USA , and Canada, where passports come at a higher expense but offer greater passport power with broader visa-free access.

The travel insurance comparison experts compiled a list of passport fees, evaluating them based on price, validity period, and passport power. Their findings revealed that while some nations offer significant passport power, it often comes with a higher price tag.

Indian passport 'cheapest' in terms of cost of year

When considering the cost per year of validity, India emerged as the most economical passport option, with a mere $1.81 expenditure per year. Following closely behind are South Africa and Kenya, with charges of $3.05 and $3.09 respectively.

A Mexican passport, according to the study, costs $231.05 for 10 years, while the Australian passport costs $225.78.
