Now that you have the lay of the land of what's out there, we're going to dive into how to decide which program would be the best fit for you.

Here are a few things to help you determine whether or not a travel agent school is a good decision for you. (You can think of it as an un-failable quiz!):

1. are you totally new to the industry?

If you're really working from ground zero, a travel agent school is great way to help you get your bearings. Not only that, but if you do your due diligence and choose a great travel agent school, you stand to save some time by getting all the basic industry info you need in one place (rather than trying to cobble together your own education).

2. Do you want to earn a general degree or professional certificate?

If you want to earn an Associate's degree or a professional certificate then a travel agent school could be a great option for you. If you're in the market for a general degree, you'll want to be sure the travel school you choose is accredited.

• Check on the travel agent school's website to see if they're accredited. (You can usually find this in the About [School] section . . . they'll want to brag about their accreditation, so it will be there if they have one!)

If you're looking to earn a professional certificate, you won't need to pick an accredited school, but you'll want to choose a program that's industry-recognized (more on that later).

3. Does the idea of a structured program & Peer Support motivate you?

A travel agent school can also be a good option if you find If you thrive off of the structured support of a set program—a syllabus, class schedule, homework, evaluation, deadlines, quizzes, etc. Each travel agent school will be structured differently, so if there are some aspects of the school structure that are important to you, make sure that the travel school fits the bill for you.

Most of the travel agent schools are online, but this isn't necessarily at the expense of tight-knit peer communities. One way to evaluate a travel school is to check and see if they have active online groups of alums. You can also ask programs how much contact students have with one another during the course (we'll get more into the nitty gritty of evaluating schools soon.)

4. Is a Travel School in Your Budget?

The tuition for travel agent schools listed in this article ranges from $495 to $15,900. That's quite a range. In terms of making a sound financial investment, consider these questions:

1. How much do I want to spend on a travel school?

3. Does it seem to offer a good value?

4. Is it a good value for what it offers (for example, you might consider how much it costs per credit or contact hours, rather than focusing on the total sticker price) .

5. Is it comparable in price to other training programs?

6. Can I pay in installments?

7. Can I get any scholarship, aide, loans?

Make a Travel Agent School Short List

A travel school is a good option for you?! *High five!* Now the kicker is this, how do you decide what program might be best for you.

Here's a list of questions to ask of your travel agent school programs to help you narrow it down:

1. Who teaches in the program and what is their background in the industry?

I'm going to be honest here. There's a lot of training and education programs out there, and you deserve a program with someone at the helm who's invested in the travel industry. Look at their background, and gauge the industry engagement of the people who run and teach at the school.

The most important quality of a travel agent school is the quality of its education, and choosing one with deep industry roots is a good indication that you'll be in good hands.

2. If you want a general degree, is the school accredited?

If you want a general degree in addition to earning a professional certificate at a travel agent school, you want (I'll go ahead and say need ) to pick a school that is accredited.

Here's another thing to consider: Do any of the credits from the travel agent certificate go toward the general degree? Hopefully the answer is a resounding yes (the more credits that apply to your degree, the merrier).

3. is their certificate recognized within the industry?

Most travel agent schools result in some kind of professional certificate. If you're an independent contractor, a travel agent certificate itself is not going to give you instant access to a higher pay scale. But a good program will help you cultivate professional skills, which will translate to a higher pay scale.

If you want to become an independent contractor, you may also want to consider if a host agency accepts the certificate in lieu of the host's education program (more on that later). How would you know that if a host is willing to make this accommodation? You can post a question on their host profile on this very site!!!

4. Is their curriculum current, thorough and useful?

Evaluating the strength of a travel school's curriculum may seem hard if you have no industry experience. But I'm here to give you a few pointers on how to gauge if it's up to snuff for what you need:

• Does it cover a variety of topics? Does it go into as much depth as you need such as marketing, sales strategies, legal & regulatory topics, an industry overview, trip planning? Is there any focus on some popular niches such as destination specialty, cruise, etc (especially if it aligns with what you want to do).
• Does it focus on topics that you don't need? Okay. I'm about to say something controversial: Unless you want to be a corporate agent, you don't need a curriculum that focuses on GDS (Global Distribution System) . There. I said it. You can throw flaming bags of dog poop on my porch, but I stand behind this because A.) 99% of the time, GDS is not the right tool for the job for leisure agents and B.) It's a waste of your time and money to spend so much time learning a tool you probably won't use. Do you want to be familiar with what it is? Sure. But if you're going to sell leisure, you don't need 20% of your coursework dedicated to it.
• Is it current? When is the last time the travel agent school updated their curriculum? Do they talk about current issues in travel? If you're not sure just by perusing their site, give them a holler and ask.
• Do specific areas of focus align with what you want to do? Some travel agent schools will have specific areas of study that might be optional. This may include focusing on a particular destination or niche. This is fabulous . . . unless you don't really care about that area of study. So if a program has an entire unit on, let's say, Jamaica, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, that's not going to be very helpful to you if you primarily want to book adventure trips to Alaska and the Arctic regions. But there's an exception . . .
• Does it prepare you to become an independent contractor or an employee? A curriculum will be very different based on whether or not you want to become an employee or an independent contractor. If you want to work for a retail location as an employee, familiarity with GDS is going to be an asset; a broad overview of cruise lines and popular destinations like Jamaica, Mexico and DR is critical. But if you're going to be an independent contractor, it's important that the area of study aligns closely with what you want to do. It might seems like choosing a niche is putting the cart before the horse, but homing in on a specialty can help you choose a travel agent school.

5. What are the program goals & do they succeed?

You have a good handle on your goals, but how do they align with the goals of a travel school? More than that, does the travel agent school achieve the goals they set out for themselves as a program? Here's a few questions to consider.

• What are the goals of the program (and does it fit with your professional goals? Is it to prepare you for the Travel Institute's TAP (Travel Agent Proficiency) test? 1 Is it to eventually support you with job placement? Is it give you a broad overview? Is it to make you an expert on selling cruises? Is it to give you a broad overview of the industry?
• Does the travel school have follow-up employment services? Will they continue to support you once you're out in the world? How do they do that?
• Are their alumnae ending up where you want to end up? Are their alumnae doing the jobs (or creating the jobs) that you want to do?
• What does their data say? Beyond graduation/completion rate, how long does it take their students to get settled into the industry?

Alternatives to Travel Agent School

Maybe you've gotten this far and decided that a travel agent school is not right for you. But you don't need to throw your arms up in surrender just yet because there are other options.

What are they you ask? Read on!

1. Travel Agent Certification:

Certifications allow you to add fancy letters after your name that will (hopefully) be recognized by the travel industry. They're often provided by organizations such as  travel consortia , accreditation organizations ( more here on travel agent accreditation options ), and travel industry membership groups such as GBTA or the Travel Institute.

A comparable example to travel agent certification might be like a CPA (certified professional accountant). You can still be an accountant without your CPA, but it helps potential clients know that you're the real deal. 2. Host Travel Agent Education Programs:

Host agencies and travel consortia also have loads of education opportunities. In fact, some of the travel agent schools listed above were founded by folks who run host agencies. (They're busy!)

What the heck a host agency and travel consortium? At its most basic, a host agency is an umbrella organization that an independent agency (that’s you!) can align with for better commissions, supplier relations, and marketing/tech tools.

A travel consortium is a collective of host agencies, travel agencies, and/or travel advisors that join forces to combine resources in order to increase their industry footprint. This gives them more including buying potential, benefits, & commission levels.

This area of Transition Services looks at training people with disabilities to use public transportation safely and independently.

It answers such questions as: What are the essential components of a successful travel training program? What specific skills do travelers need? What issues arise with specific disabilities such as physical, cognitive, or visual impairments.

Transportation provides us all with access to the wider opportunities of society employment, postsecondary education, job training programs, recreation. Traveling by car, by cab, or by public transportation systems such as bus and subway enables us to go to work and come home, go to school or other training programs, visit friends, take care of daily needs such as grocery shopping, and enjoy recreational activities.

Yet, many individuals with disabilities have traditionally been isolated from these societal opportunities, because they lacked a means of transportation. For many, driving a car was not possible, due to a visual, physical, or cognitive disability. Public transportation systems were often inaccessible due to structural barriers. Still other individuals were unable to use the transportation systems that were available, because they lacked the training, or "know-how," to use these systems safely.

Today, the lack of access to transportation that many individuals with disabilities have experienced is changing. Recently enacted federal legislation clearly intends to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate independently and successfully in society. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) recognizes the critical role that public transportation plays in the lives of many people and mandates that public transportation systems become accessible to people with disabilities. It also mandates that paratransit services are available and accessible to individuals who are unable to use public transportation.

Unfortunately, availability of transportation is not the only impediment to independent travel for people with disabilities. They must also know what systems of transport are available, how to access these, how to plan their travel, and how to execute their travel plans safely. For many individuals, learning how to travel on public transportation requires systematic training. Travel training, then, is often a crucial element in empowering people with disabilities to use the newly accessible transportation systems in our country.

To this end, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) can be of particular importance. The IDEA requires public schools to provide what are known as "transition services" to youth with disabilities, to prepare them for the transition from school to adult life. While accessible transportation and transportation training are not specifically mentioned within IDEA, clearly the ability to use available transportation systems may be critical to a student's transition into the adult world. Thus, both the ADA and the IDEA provide individuals with disabilities, their families, school systems, service providers, community agencies, and transit systems with compelling incentives to work together to ensure that individuals with disabilities learn how to use accessible transportation.

Travel Training

The Travel Training Program is a comprehensive program that teaches students with disabilities how to travel safely and independently on public transportation. The program has been in existence since 1970 and has served thousands of students. This specially designed instruction is provided on a one-to-one basis by specifically trained personnel. The students are taught the safest and most direct route to and from school or worksite. Included in instruction are teaching pedestrian skills, reinforcing appropriate and safe behaviors, problem solving skills, and use of alternative routes. Upon successful completion of the instructional program, students are expected to use public transportation independently.

How is a referral made?

Referrals can be made by school personnel, parents, or students by contacting the Travel Training borough office or the Main Office of Travel Training at (212) 673-1242 or [email protected] .

Who is eligible for the program?

N.Y.C. Dept. of Education students who have disabilities other than blindness or visual impairments, ages 14-21, who require instruction in travel skills and techniques to use public transportation independently and do not require the services of a full-time one-to-one paraprofessional, are eligible.

How is eligibility determined?

Students referred for travel training are assessed by Travel Training teachers to evaluate cognitive and functional readiness for the one-to-one instruction.

How to Find a Travel Trailer Driving School

So you’ve got a brand new trailer ready to go on a road trip, but how do you drive with a trailer? Fortunately, there are numerous resources and schools where you can learn how to drive with a trailer.

Some different travel trailer driving school options include online schools like rvtraining.com, a local RV driving school, and if money is tight, YouTube is a great resource, though it should not be used in place of school.

Some people require in-person training while others can learn from videos; whichever you are, we can find an affordable option to help you get on the road for your trip. While looking for travel trailer training options, I discovered that RV training also includes travel trailers.

How to Find Training and Why You Might Need It

When it comes to traveling with your travel trainer, you can find both online and in-person training.

In-person training will vary depending on where you live because training schools are spread out. It may be difficult to locate a nearby one, requiring you to travel some distance.

If this is not possible, online training is an excellent alternative. There are some instructors who will even drive out to see you. If you choose this option, you may be charged additional fees.

It is critical to attend training because some states require that you be trained before embarking on any trips. Furthermore, with certain training, you can obtain a certificate. Some insurance companies will accept this certificate and give you a discount if you present it to them.

I’ve included links to an online course and an in-person website that can help you locate an in-person training school in your area. You can use this website to determine which school is closest to you.

I’ve also included a list of schools in each state so you can decide which one is best for you.

RV Online Training is a training option.

If you learn best from videos and online instructions, the RV 101 Tow Your Travel Trailer Like a Pro Video Training Program is probably for you.

This program appeals to me because it is accessible via any internet device, such as a phone or computer, and it offers enjoyable ways to learn how to drive a travel trailer.

This is also a great resource because you don’t have to look for a local training school and worry about forgetting the tips because you can keep them on your phone as you travel with this course.

You will go through 5 chapters that cover everything from determining the proper tow vehicle capacity to backing the travel trailer.

This course will teach you how to match your vehicle to the trailer, such as ensuring you have the appropriate weight to pull it. Following this, the course teaches you how to hitch your travel trailer, including how to do so safely so that there are no problems while driving.

It is run by an instructor with over 20 years of experience teaching and assisting people with RVs and travel trailers.

What the course includes: A reading-based program that also includes games, videos, and field trips to help students understand travel trailer and RV driving.

RV Driving School Provides On-Site Training

There are in-person RV driving schools if you want to get hands-on experience and training.

One of the reasons why many people prefer in-person training is that you can obtain a certificate that insurance companies will accept and give you a discount for completing.

There are several ways an in-person training school can assist you if you are considering enrolling: 1) Driving instruction, which is not a class but rather one-on-one instruction to assist you in learning how to drive your vehicle. 2) Safety seminars; 3) Commercial training.

What In-Person Lessons Provide

You will receive instruction in your own vehicle while using this driving school. There are no specific classes or videos, as there are in the online course, but you are taught everything in person with your specific trailer.

During an in-person meeting, they will teach you how to inspect your RV for safety, how to properly use the brakes, how to back, what to do in tight spots, how to change lanes, and more.

There are various price ranges for these lessons, which are slightly more expensive than the online option. A private lesson for one person costs $495 and includes four hours on each of the three days. There is also the option for two people to take private lessons for $695.

If you just need a refresher on how to drive a travel trailer or RV, there is a $250 Refresher Course available. It is intended for students who have previously completed the course but require additional instruction. It’s fantastic that the price has dropped, especially for those who require a little more assistance.

People who are renting an RV or a travel trailer

A course for those renting a travel trailer or RV is also available for $250 for one day of instruction.

Other In-Person Advantages and Directions

There are also safety seminars available that are separate from driving instruction and are designed to ensure that everyone knows about safety, regardless of how long they’ve been driving.

Commercial instruction is a class for people who work for companies that require them to drive large vehicles such as RVs.

I did some research on some more in-person training schools to help you find a travel training school that offers a variety of useful skills near you. Schools may differ by state, but these are some additional suggestions to consider.

Trainers Come to YOU for RV Basic Training Boot Camp

The RV Basic Training is a company that sends trainers to your location to assist you with your vehicle. Trainers can be found in the following states: California, Idaho, Utah, Texas, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, and Alaska.

This in-person site provides a variety of boot camps that can assist with a variety of different skills. Safety training, one-on-one training, medical training, how to drive a fifth wheel, how to tow a trailer, and other skills can be learned at these camps.

There is even corporate driver training for those whose jobs necessitate the use of large vehicles.

I also like their website because they provide numerous driving tips for free. There is a page that explains how to set your mirror, turn, and pivot point.

They also sell a $30 RV driving course manual, which may help you with your course and help you remember what you learned while traveling.

The course covers adjusting mirrors, basic driving skills, stopping, driving challenges, defensive driving, and other topics. Also includes a free copy of the RV Basic Training Motor Home Driving Tips Manual and a competition certificate.

National RV Maintenance Training Academy

This Training Academy teaches people how to maintain and understand their RV or trailer’s technical training.

The National RV Training Academy is an excellent training facility for those who work in RV dealerships, professionals who teach others about RVs, and RV owners who want to learn how to repair their own vehicle.

This academy is located in Athens, Texas, but it is a fantastic one-week course that provides in-class instruction with a significant portion taught in hands-on labs. If you are just an RV owner, there is also a home study option where you can get all of the training on a USB memory stick.

The in-person training includes online videos and handouts, as well as working with other students in the lab to gain understanding.

You can also look into more advanced classes. For example, if you work at an RV dealership, you can take 5 weeks of different courses that teach you how to maintain air conditioners, refrigerators, heaters, and other appliances.

Each section, whether you are a dealer or a teacher, provides different resources to help you in your career or with your personal RV and travel trailer.

Recommended YouTube Videos for Trailer Training This is a good option if you have a specific question, but I’m not sure YouTube can always teach you everything you need to know about driving a travel trailer.

You can’t get a certificate by watching YouTube videos, so it’s not the best option. However, there are specific videos that can be extremely useful, especially if you’re on the road and need to review what you’ve learned.

I discovered some useful videos that can help you learn about the fundamentals of travel trailers, such as how to back them up.

Backing a Travel Trailer

This is a short video that demonstrates how to back a travel trailer. It appeals to me because it is straightforward while also providing some 5th wheel trailer advice. Although it is a nice short video, I also found a longer video below in the next video that can help you understand a trailer “tail swing.”

I like this video because it shows how you can practice driving with a trailer in a parking lot and how to maneuver around. This is a very detailed video that can even assist you in parallel parking.

Constructing a Travel Trailer

When you arrive at your campground of choice, you may want some pointers on how to set up your trailer. If you’re looking to park it for the first time, this video is a great option.

This is one of my favorite videos because it walks you through the entire process of setting up your trailer correctly.

Here’s another useful video that explains how to set up an RV trailer at a campsite. It teaches you how to level and stabilize your trailer so that it is properly positioned.

If you’re looking for a simple video to help you understand how to connect your camper’s water and electricity, here’s a 2-minute video that explains it briefly.

Aside from setting up camp, I discovered some tip videos to help you avoid swaying and how to tow or back up with a trailer using a camera. They are listed in the section below.

Tips for Avoiding Swaying and Towing

If you are concerned about swaying or notice your vehicle swaying while driving, the video below is worth watching.

This video below provides some tips for turning and towing a fifth wheel or travel trailer. It explains how mounting a camera on the back of your vehicle can assist you in backing up.

What Should You Pack in Your Travel Trailer?

When you buy a travel trailer, it is critical that you bring the necessary items so that you can enjoy your camping trip. To train you on what you’ll need in your trailer, I’ve included a video about some things to bring with your travel trailer.

Overall, there are several YouTube videos that can help you find proper travel trailer training. It is important to remember, however, that it should not be used in place of official RV or travel trailer training.

Specific travel trailer and RV courses can provide specifics that are critical to driving, especially in-person lessons. That, and I always feel better when I have someone helping me in person, but I know a lot of people who learn easily through online videos!

You will be able to drive a travel trailer like a pro in no time if you choose the right training school and apply what they teach you. In addition, as I mentioned in the preceding section, YouTube can be useful for additional tips.
