Strike action rumbles on as West Midlands bus drivers vote on latest pay offer

Strike action continues today while West Midlands bus drivers vote on a new offer with passengers still told to only travel if "absolutely necessary".

The strike will continue while bus drivers vote on the new offer today and tomorrow, with the results due to be announced later on Saturday.

If the new pay offer is accepted, it will end the current continuous industrial action which has seen the majority of National Express West Midlands bus services ground to a halt. It would see a reduced service running on Sunday, with a return to full service from Monday.

More than 3,100 bus drivers at National Express West Midlands began continuous industrial action on Monday, with workers joining picket lines every day this week.

It came after Unite members overwhelmingly rejected a 14.3 per cent pay rise offer in a ballot last week. Now, a 16.2 per cent pay increase has been tabled.

A limited service, primarily serving the region’s major hospitals, which may be changed at short notice, is operating.

National Express bosses this morning said: "Please do not travel on a National Express bus unless absolutely necessary. National Express coaches are running as normal.

"There is a ballot taking place to end the strikes which we will have the result of on Saturday. A positive result would mean a reduced service on Sunday, March 26 and a normal service on Monday, March 27. We'll keep you updated via this web page and our social media.

"During the ballot period bus strikes are set to continue. This means that you should plan alternative travel arrangements for the next few days. Alternative public transport is still running, to find out more please visit the TfWM website."

Only a 'skeleton service' has been able to operate since the start of the week.

The bus operator has called it a "very fair and decent offer" which is "among the best pay rises of any sector, anywhere in the country".

A National Express West Midlands spokesperson said: “We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Unite that is going to be fully recommended to its members and will be balloted on Friday and Saturday.

“This is a very fair and decent offer - among the best pay rises of any sector, anywhere in the country. We encourage all our drivers to accept the offer and get the West Midlands moving again.

"We are very sorry to customers for the disruption this week.”

Unite national lead officer Onay Kasab said: “Following negotiations on Thursday, National Express put forward an improved pay offer which will be put to our members in a vote over the next two days.

"Unite will be making no further comments during the ballot period.”

This week, there have been picket lines outside National Express garages in the Black Country, including in Wolverhampton, Walsall, West Bromwich and Kingswinford.

National Express bus drivers in the West Midlands will today vote on a new pay offer which could bring an end to ongoing industrial action.

As strike action enters its sixth day, thousands of bus drivers in the West Midlands are due to vote on a new offer aimed at resolving the pay dispute.

It comes as  National Express West Midlands  put forward a new pay deal yesterday (March 22).

More than 3,100 bus drivers will vote on the improved offer today and on Saturday.

However, strike action will continue while the ballot is held, with a result expected to be announced on Saturday.

Bus drivers at  National Express West Midlands  have been on strike since Monday 20 March.

As the service runs 93% of buses in the region, widespread disruption  has impacted those who solely rely on buses to go about their daily lives - including work, school, medical appointments and shopping.

A  National Express West Midlands  spokesperson said: "We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Unite that is going to be fully recommended to its members and will be balloted on Friday and Saturday.

"Subject to a positive ballot, we are intending to operate a reduced service from Sunday 26 March and a normal service from Monday 27 March."

Unite national lead officer Onay Kasab said: “Following negotiations today, National Express put forward an improved pay offer which will be put to our members in a vote over the next two days. Unite will be making no further comments during the ballot period.”

How long will the strike go on for?

It's a continuous and indefinite strike until a pay deal can be agreed on by both sides, say union leaders. Today (Thursday 23 March) marks the fourth day of strike action.

More than 3,100 bus drivers will vote tomorrow and Saturday on an improved offer put forward by the company, Unite said today.

Strike action will continue while the ballot is held on Friday and Saturday.

What services are running?

National Express West Midlands runs 93% of bus services in the region - but with 3,000 drivers on strike, there's not many left to drive the buses.

The company says it's running a limited service, primarily operating routes to major hospitals.

Which hospitals is National Express still operating services to and from?

The operator says it's committed to continue operating services to and from: City Hospital, Good Hope Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Solihull Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, New Cross Hospital, Russells Hall Hospital, Sandwell District and Walsall Manor.

"We are very sorry to customers for the disruption this week."

The spokesperson added: "This is a very fair and decent offer - among the best pay rises of any sector, anywhere in the country.

"We encourage all our drivers to accept the offer and get the  West Midlands  moving again."

Strike action will continue while the ballot is held, with the results known on Saturday.

Unite national lead officer Onay Kasab said:   "Following negotiations today, National Express put forward an improved pay offer which will be put to our members in a vote over the next two days.

"Unite will be making no further comments during the ballot period."

National Express bus drivers in West Midlands vote to strike over pay

Strike begins 16 March, after company reports underlying pre-tax profit of nearly £146m for last year

UK strike calendar

More than 3,000 National Express bus drivers in the West Midlands have voted to strike over pay, starting on 16 March, the same day as the next RMT train strike .

The Unite union said members voted 96% in favour of industrial action, on a turnout of 72%.

The workers will begin “all-out continuous” strike action on Thursday 16 March, the union said, with industrial action to carry on until the dispute is resolved.

The National Express drivers will be joined by more than 200 engineers at the company who voted for industrial action over pay in January, bringing the total number of striking workers to more than 3,300.

RMT union members from 14 train operators will stage a one-day strike on 16 March after rejecting pay offers from train operators and Network Rail. University lecturers at more than 150 universities and school teachers across England and Wales are also planning to strike that day.

National Express apologised to customers for the “significant disruption” that would be caused by the strike, and said it was continuing to talk to Unite in an attempt to avoid industrial action. It said it anticipated a “very limited service” running on strike days and that customers would be able to find updates on its website.

Publishing its annual results on Thursday, National Express said it had “benefited from strikes elsewhere in public transport in 2022”, as its passenger numbers were boosted by people switching from rail because of the recent train strikes.

The company made an underlying pre-tax profit of £146m last year, up from £40m in 2021 when travel plummeted because of the Covid pandemic. Revenues rose 29% to £2.8bn.

National Express has reduced the price of single tickets to £2 for adults and £1 for children until 31 March, as part of the government’s Help for Households scheme .

Unite said National Express was offering its workers in the West Midlands a real-terms pay cut, despite the surge in profits. Some drivers earn £11.80 an hour while doing “an incredibly stressful job”, rising to £14.40 an hour after three years, Unite said.

The union’s general secretary, Sharon Graham, said: “National Express is sitting on mountains of cash and can absolutely afford to give a pay rise to its staff that reflects rocketing living costs. It needs to do just that.”

after newsletter promotion

National Express said it offered drivers a 14% rise initially, but the union countered that the deal was worth just 8%. Drivers have since been offered an 11.1% pay rise, while engineers have been offered 11.5%.

The strikes are expected to severely disrupt National Express services, which cover 93% of the West Midlands bus network, including in Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, Dudley and West Bromwich .

National Express said: “This is an extremely disappointing result. Since the ballot, we have offered the union a pay deal for drivers worth 13.4% made up of 11.1% for 2023 and a retention payment worth 2.3%. This is on top of 6% our drivers received in November. This will see the majority of drivers earn over £30,000.

“The union has turned it down without even giving our drivers a chance to vote on it. Only 60% of drivers voted in favour of industrial action on an out-of-date offer of 8.1%.”

Unite’s regional officer Sulinder Singh said: “National Express’s greed is the reason why the entire West Midlands bus network will be shut down and it bears the responsibility for the disruption that will be caused. Our members do not want to strike but National Express has left them with no choice. The company needs to put forward an offer that our members can accept – it can clearly afford to.”

National Express West Midlands bus drivers are striking for a fourth consecutive day today. It means another limited service offered to passnegers.

A dozen bus routes, mainly serving hospitals, are in operation today, Thursday, March 23. Although the bus firm warned that two services - number four Birmingham - Solihull - and number 28 - Heartlands Hospital - Great Barr - have been disrupted due to services being delayed at Perry Barr.

There is yet no end in sight to this strike in a row over pay. Unite the union said its members would strike indefinitely until a better deal was struck. Drivers also rejected a 14.3 per cent pay increase last weekend.

Daimler Truck Workers Reach Deal and Avert Threatened Strike in North Carolina

The United Automobile Workers reached an agreement involving workers who make Freightliner trucks and Thomas Built buses. The deal comes as the union seeks to expand in Southern states.

Jack Ewing

By Jack Ewing

The United Automobile Workers reached an 11th-hour deal on Friday with Daimler Truck in North Carolina that gave workers 25 percent raises over the next four years and averted a strike that would have begun Saturday.

The union had said it was ready to walk out if it could not agree on a new contract covering 7,300 Daimler employees. The previous contract expired on Friday. The German company has four factories in North Carolina, where it builds Freightliner and Western Star trucks, and Thomas Built buses. The union also represents workers at parts distribution centers in Atlanta and Memphis.

The deal, which includes profit sharing, automatic cost-of-living increases and equalizes pay among workers at the North Carolina factories, marks a victory for the U.A.W. as it tries to expand its power in Southern states where unions have long been weak.

“When that deadline came closer, the company suddenly became ready to talk,” Shawn Fain, the U.A.W.’s leader, said late Friday as he announced the agreement, which will give workers raises of at least 16 percent the first year after they ratify the contract.

Daimler Trucks said in a statement that it hoped U.A.W. members would approve the tentative contracts, “for the mutual benefit of all parties.”

A walkout would have had national political repercussions . North Carolina is a political battleground state that has a Democratic governor, but President Biden narrowly lost the state in 2020. Mr. Biden had indicated that he could step in aggressively to support the Daimler workers, possibly putting him at odds with the state’s more pro-business Democrats just months before Election Day.

The U.A.W. has been making inroads in the South. It scored a significant victory this month when workers at Volkswagen’s factory in Chattanooga , Tenn., voted to be represented by the union. Workers at a Mercedes-Benz factory in Alabama will vote on whether to unionize in mid-May.

Workers at Daimler Truck, which split from Mercedes-Benz in 2021, have been represented by the U.A.W. for several decades. The union has adopted a more assertive stance after winning the biggest pay increases in decades for workers at Ford Motor, General Motors and Stellantis, the owner of Jeep, Chrysler and Ram after strikes at the three companies last year.

The gains for workers at Daimler could add momentum to the U.A.W.’s drive to organize U.S. auto factories, including at companies like Toyota and Tesla.

Workers in North Carolina said they have been struggling to make ends meet while Daimler racked up big profits. The company, based in Stuttgart, reported net profit last year of 4 billion euros, or $4.25 billion, a 44 percent increase from a year earlier. Sales in the United States, Canada and Mexico generated more than half the profit.

The union points out that Thomas Built, whose yellow school buses are a common sight, has benefited from millions of dollars in federal subsidies for electric buses. Thomas Built workers have earned less than counterparts at other factories, but the deal will give them pay increases to make up the deficit.

“Workers who make trucks and workers who make buses will get equal pay for equal work,” Mr. Fain said.

The agreement also includes provisions aimed at preserving jobs in North Carolina. Workers had sought more job security after the company moved some production to Mexico.

History of Tolyatti

The town was founded by Vasily Tatishev as a fortress called Stavropol to protect the territory of the Russian Empire from nomad raids in 1737. During the 19th century the town’s population hardly grew, and was about 6 thousand people.

By the 1950s, there were only about 12,000 people in the town. When Zhigulyovskaya hydro power station and Kyubyshev water reservoir were constructed, almost the whole town was moved to a new location.

In 1964, the city was renamed in honor of the General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party Palmiro Togliatti. In 1966, together with the Italian automaker FIAT, construction of the Volga Automobile Plant (VAZ), the largest in the USSR, began. In 1964-1970, the population of the city doubled. According to 1970 census, 251,000 people lived in Tolyatti.

Tolyatti - Features

City Day is celebrated on the first summer weekend. Tolyatti stretches for 30 km along the Volga River, and consists of three districts: Avtozavodsky, Central and Komsomolsky. Tolyatti is often called the “green city” because of the large number of green plantations and forests.

The climate is temperate continental with hot summers and cold winters. However, it is considerably mitigated by the Kuibyshev Reservoir. The average temperature in January is minus 10,6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 20.9 degrees Celsius.

Tolyatti is a large industrial and economic center of Russia. “AvtoVAZ” is the main enterprise of the city. Also there is an automobile plant of “GM-AvtoVAZ” company and a lot of plants producing various parts for cars. Chemical industry is well developed in the city - “TolyattiAzot”, the largest in the world ammonia producer, is located here. The plant supplies its products through a unique ammonia pipeline “Tolyatti-Odessa”.

The federal highway M-5 “Ural” passes through the city connecting the central regions of the European part of Russia with its eastern parts: the Volga region, Urals, Siberia, and the Far East. The distance from Tolyatti to Samara is 90 km, to Moscow - 991 km. Transit trains don’t pass through the city. Only two trains are available: to Moscow and Saratov.

Russian ufologists consider Tolyatti to be one of the most anomalous places in Russia. The number of unexplained facts registered in the city is dozens times higher than the average level in the country.

Attractions of Tolyatti

There are more than 160 historical and cultural monuments in Tolyatti - the city-building monuments and memorial boards. The monuments of city-building are represented by separate objects as well as whole complexes. These are the buildings preserved from the old flooded town and moved to the new city as well as those built in the 1950s.

Nearly half of all monuments can be found in the Central district. On Svobody (Freedom) Square there is a memorial with the Eternal Fire and the Glory Obelisk in memory of the locals perished during the Second World War.

Varvarinskaya Church, built in 1846 in the settlement of Fyodorovka, is of cultural and historical importance. The monumental and decorative composition “Prometheus” on the building of the House of Culture “Tolyatti” is among the most interesting sights (Lenina Boulevard, 1).

In recent years, a number of new monuments appeared in the city: to V.N.Tatishev, the founder of the town, the sculpture “Sorrowful Angel” - to the victims of political repressions, the sculpture to Nikolai Chodotvorets (Saint Nicholas), the dog sculpture “Verny” and a lot of others.

Tolyatti was named after Palmiro Togliatti, an Italian communist. It is the headquarters of Lada, a major Russian automobile manufacturer. The population is approximately 720,000, of which 110,000 are employed by Lada. In the 1950s, when the population was 12,000, the entire city was moved to its present location to allow for construction of the Zhiguli Hydroelectric Station.

Togliatti was the location of the Speedway of Nations in 2019. Motorcycle riders from Russia, Australia , Denmark , Great Britain , Sweden , and Germany contested.

Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Thursday 25 April 2024 10:29, UK

travel wm bus strike

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

An underground train pulls into Leicester Square station in central London February 11, 2014. A planned 48-hour strike this week by staff on London's underground rail network which threatened to bring travel misery for millions has been suspended to allow further talks, unions said on Tuesday. Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

Monday 29 April

Tuesday 30 April

Wednesday 1 May

Tuesday 2 May

Wednesday 3 May

Thursday 4 May

Friday 5 May

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".
