It's a strong, durable, and stiff ride. It's been bulletproof for the near-ten years I've owned it. I've taken care of it, kept it "reasonably" clean and oiled, and, maybe, once tightened a derailleur cable. Now it's starting to show its wear and tear component-wise. …thinking of throwing new 2019 XT groupo on it. I can't complain about the wheelset as some others have. However, a better/new wheelset always brings a bike new life.

Mine is the 15" and I find the geometry a little too squirrely on technical descents taken at speed. I think if the rake was slackened just a hair it would make for better inspiration of confidence.

Great bike all around great feel and performance excellent durability

Only weakness i have had with this bike was bearings in back weel went bad . I think this bike may need a little upgrade with the weels

Excellent bike altogether ,olny real upgrade i seen that may be needed is the weels

1. Superlight! Only 23 lbs with my current set up. It might go lower if you go tubeless. 2. Very strong compared to carbon frames 3. Handles really well on single trails 4. Looks awesome!!

1. Less vibration damping compared to carbon frame 2. Hard to keep up with 29ers on flat

I have 2010 version. I bought it as used. The previous owner upgraded it to XTR crankset, X0 derailleurs, Thompson handle bar and seatpost. It is really light as carbon or even lighter than lower grade carbon frames. If you want a superlight HT bike that can take beatings, look no further!!

Light as Carbon and Robust as Steel

The SLX shifters

This is a great bike. Very light and not fragile like carbon bikes. I highly recommend this bike. 2 things i will change shortly... the SLX shifters to XT and the Sram chain that rolls on the XT rear deraileur and on the XT crank. Honestly i dont get it... The rest is perfect.

Light, cool white design, great Suspension, excellent geometry

None so far.

Well I bought the 2010 model and I can assure this bike is one of the best, the incredible light weight and the good brakes response makes it perfect when you are going downhill (very fast also), the reba fork is a dream and the SLX gear shifters work good but maybe in the future I'll change it for XTR.

Light, easy to bike. Nice setup. Great design

SLX shifters combined with XT rear derailleur

With this bike, cycling goes so much easier than with my old 4300. Everything costs less effort, so I enjoy biking even more. After the switch of shifters, it's just a perfect bike. Also I thought Shimano XT was the standard in disc brakes, but the Elixir 5 on the 8000 work very nice and have a good feel in the brake handles.

Stable in loose sand, stiff

Shifts verry bad (due to sram chain PC927). Elexir 5 squeel and vibrat all the time, the pads are way to close to the rotor. When the suspention Roch Shock Reba SL is shifted it stay in the hard condition, you need to pull the steer to unlock it. It is the worst bike I ever road on. He is back in the shop, hopefully TREK replaces the malfunctioning bike.

This was mtb off the year (2009) . I ask myself , do they ride the bikes.....

Minerva outback

Great response, light weight, great componets

Saddle, Tires

I started riding trail this summer. I picked up a Trek 4500 serious and put in around 200 miles of trail on it. It was a good way to break me in and also a good baseline on how to job my next bike. The 2009 Trek 8000 was such an improvement I will never ride my other bike again. I can't believe the difference the components make. Light weight, reduction in rolling resistance and self correcting in many ways. For a hard tail bike this one is a dream. The tires are more for hard pack and its fall in Indiana so its wet and sloppy. I threw on some WTB VelociRaptor’s and it's kicking on the trail. If you're looking for a great middle of the road hard tail this is the bike.

08' Trek 4500

After I re-set it up, and upgraded SLX to XT shifters. straightened out the rotors and reposition the calipers, removed the gear indicators for proper 1 or 2 finger brake finger position I can say this bike's manners are impressive. I dont care if your riding a $5000.00 dollar hardtail ,you wont be able to tell the difference. This bike communicates everything between you and the ground to your your butt and fingers. Gears are one pop away from the other and brakes after a long hill-less florida break-in period are grabby just how my 250lb body needs them to be. And its easy on the eyes

Hard ride. recommend you keep the paint waxed as the black is sure to show scratches for those who care how you look when you show up at the trailhead and your friends bikes cost thousands more than yours. Did I mention the hard ride.

Tires not the best for mud but great on hard packed surfaces. Bike does what its suppose too but inherently its a hardtail when I should have gotten a F/S. But I must say that I love my bike

2001 Trek 8000, caloi Team XT

fast, light, shifts smooth, looks sweet, great bike I have crashed this bike so many times and it still works like brand new. Brakes stop on a dime. this bike rails corners. I have a 19.5 frame and with pedals and cages this bike weight about 25 lbs (but it fells like 15) its a bumpy ride but it goes fast

tire are kinda cheap and heavy i plan on ungrading soon, HUb cones came unlocked after 2 rides fork took a while to get set up correctly grips hurt your hands if you dont use gloves

best bike for the money if you like going fast you should buy this bike

Trek 8000 Disc (SG) review

With Lance and his legion not taking up all their time, Trek's mountain bike division seems to have come alive this year and even the long-running 8000 disc gets a whole new lease of life for 2007.

Well, it's actually the name that's long running, as the Alpha frame itself is totally new and showcases the latest hydroforming techniques. Starting with a neatly reinforced head tube, both double butted main tubes are curved and flared for maximum welding area and direction-appropriate stiffness at either end. The top tube slopes down slightly for increased standover clearance before 'trumpeting' up to boost vertical stiffness at the seat tube. The down tube is curved for fork clearance and then squashed flat for maximum bottom bracket support.

Chainstays are tapered multi-section pieces too, but the real showpiece is the flowing wishbone seatstay setup. As well as the smooth centre-seamed top looking stunning, it leaves masses of mud room. There's no brace on the chainstays either, so this bike should run unhindered on even the dirtiest days.

All cables and pipes run along the top side of the top tube (with a centre hose guide to stop it looping up) and there are twin bottle cage bosses for thirsty days.

Disc-specific design adds to the tidiness and flow of the rear end and even the scalloped disc mount is pretty, too. No rack or mudguard mounts though, so there's nothing for the bag ladies among you.

There's a big leap between sizing on Trek bikes, with the medium being shorter than you'd normally expect and the large long enough to land a plane on. This means plenty of racer-friendly stretch though, which fits the performance hardtail bill here perfectly.

With its long stretch and remarkably low overall weight (this was a large sample, after all) the 8000 just screams off down the trail from the first pedal stroke. The speed just keeps building too, thanks to a back end with a great balance of direct drive, but enough give to ride out the ripples and rocks. Having ricocheted around on a string of proper hard arse hardtails already this year, the extra grip and control was extremely welcome. The slight trace of flex is really encouraging and fun too, rather than just ruthlessly efficient.

While it's pretty stretched, the weight is really well balanced, so it slid just right through the corners even when we couldn't move our weight much to control it. The stretch also helps to keep you oxygenated when you're gunning for the finish line or summit though, and it keeps the front wheel well anchored on technical climbs.

The 8000 just screams off down the trail from the first pedal stroke

The wide bar setup also copes pretty well with technical situations too, although a shorter stem (we run a 90mm on our Fuel long-termer) would really dial it in for proper chuck-around childishness. You'll definitely have to change the tyres though, as the cheap plastic original equipment Bontragers were all over the place in wet conditions. The same tyre in aftermarket 'GumBi' dual compound is a decent all-rounder though, and Bontrager Mud Xs are superb wet rubber, so see if you can do a deal from your Trek dealer when you buy.

Trek's kit choice isn't just race restrictive though, it's all-round trail friendly. A perfect example are the flat bars, which keep the nose low (if you take out the big stack of spacers) but at 630mm (25in) wide, they still give plenty of power steering leverage. In this case, the 110mm stem is a reasonable length for a large-sized bike, too. RockShox Reba forks are totally dependable and durable performers, with a controlled response to the full bump range that just gets better the more you ride them. These SLs get a sprint/Tarmac-friendly Pop Loc remote lockout too, which is super simple to use and ultra durable.

LX Dual Control shifting takes a bit longer to get used to, but the action is superlight once you've mastered it and the LX brakes are smoothly controlled. The XT rear mech is a nice ego boost, while the LX cranks are excellent. Bontrager Race disc wheels are reasonably light and durable, with the added bonus of easy upgrading to tubeless if a bit of Latex takes your fancy. Bontrager Jones ACX tyres need care in the wet though, as these are hard compound cheapies not stickier aftermarket ones - but they roll and cushion pretty well.

The rest of the kit is Bontrager Race gear too, which is all sorted and secure with the exception of the seat post. Set up your saddle and then crank the single bolt down as hard as possible or prepare to have your perch pointing skyward after the first compression thump.

There's no doubt that this is a bike that's well worth investing in and upgrading as time goes on, as the new Alpha frame is one of the best XC hardtail bases we've ridden in recent months. Not a small deal when you consider that this one comes fully equipped to complement its performance, whether you're crossing whole map sheets, heading for an Enduro podium or just out exploring with mates. A proper performance XC trail classic and a welcome return to form from Trek. Guy Kesteven

‍ Trek 800 History

By 2003, the Trek 800 had already established a reputation for its durability, reliability, and affordability. It was designed as an entry-level mountain bike with a strong and long-lasting frame, making it suitable for various terrains and conditions.

The 2003 Trek 800 showcased major improvements in components and design, catering to the evolving needs of mountain bikers.

Materials and Design

In this all-in-one review of the Trek 800, we’ll cover its materials and design. We’ll focus on its frame types, color variations, and other essential components.

Frame Types

The Trek 800 is designed with a rigid steel frame that provides durability and strength for a comfortable riding experience. For those who prefer a lighter option, there is also a version of this bike with a lightweight aluminum frame.

The steel frame is made from high-quality materials like stainless steel and cro-moly frame, ensuring the bike remains sturdy and resistant to damage despite its low-cost construction.

The rigid steel frame and TIG-welded design of the Trek 800 provide a powerful and comfortable ride, even on rough roads or steep inclines and bumps. On top of that, the reliable components, such as 21 speeds and Shimano parts, make this bike versatile enough to cruise through any terrain.

The Trek 800's well-rounded design is praised for its durability and affordability, making it a great choice for an entry-level mountain bike.

Color Variations

The Trek 800 offers a variety of color options to suit the personal preferences of every rider, with different combinations of frame, fork, and component colors and paint options. Some available colors include classic black, vibrant red, and cool blue shades.

Components and Specifications

In this section, we'll dive into the details of the Trek 800's components and specifications. This all-in-one review will focus on the bike's brake and suspension systems, touching on aspects like Shimano components, gear shifters, tires, and more.

Brake System

The Trek 800 employs an alloy pull cable braking system, which provides adequate stopping power for most riders. These brakes are reliable and relatively easy to maintain, making them a good choice for an entry-level bike.

While they may not be as powerful as disc brakes, the new cables offer a more than sufficient stopping ability for tackling diverse terrains.

Suspension System

One key aspect of the Trek 800 is its rigid fork suspension system, which sets it apart from more advanced bikes like the Trek 4300 . The rigid fork offers a simple design, contributing to the bike's overall durability.

Additionally, the Trek 800 comes with 26-inch wheels, providing an agile and smooth ride. These wheels have spokes that connect to the outer rim and a chain that transfers power from the rider’s pedaling to the rear wheel.

The suspension system may be less sophisticated than bikes with more advanced shocks. Still, it remains a reliable and efficient setup for those just starting in the world of mountain biking.

Performance and Comfort

The Trek 800 MTB offers an impressive blend of performance, riding comfort, and capability suitable for riders of different skill levels. We’ll discuss its performance and comfort, focusing on its riding comfort and the bike's capability.

Riding Comfort

The Trek 800 provides a comfortable ride for its users. Its suspension system is designed to handle various terrains, ensuring the cyclist experiences smoothness even when surfaces get rough.

In addition, this bike offers a padded saddle, ensuring a comfortable ride for beginners and more experienced riders.

Bike's Capability

When it comes to the bike's capability, the Trek 800 is known for its reliable performance. This bike's quality frame and rigid fork ensure durability and stability on the trails.

Another noteworthy feature is the use of resin components that contribute to the bike's overall lightweight design, enhancing maneuverability and speed. With these attributes, it's evident that the Trek 800 can handle the demands of various cycling scenarios while maintaining rider comfort.

Value and Affordability

In this section, we'll discuss the Trek 800, its value and affordability, and how it compares to older bikes in its price range.

Comparison with Other Bikes

To help you compare the Trek 800 with other bikes in its class, here’s a detailed table:

Price Range

The Trek 800 comes at an approximately $300 retail price, making it an affordable and practical choice for many biking enthusiasts. Its simple yet effective design and reliable performance ensure riders get value for their money, particularly beginners or those looking for a secondary bike.

Compared to other bikes in the market, the Trek 800 is a cost-effective option, providing a wide gear range and a sturdy steel frame. The low price of the Trek 800 makes it an attractive choice, proving that high-quality and affordability can indeed go hand in hand.

Advantages of Trek 800

The Trek 800 is known for its simplicity, quality frame, and reliability. The bike is durable, holding up to three times more than your average road bike.

This durability allows you to take longer trips and ride in extreme weather conditions without breaking down. With its smaller wheel sizes, the Trek 800 offers better maneuverability and easier acceleration, making it a great entry-level bike for men and women.

Disadvantages of Trek 800

While the Trek 800 has earned a reputation for its durability and reliability, there are some drawbacks to consider.

Although its tire width provides better agility, it can limit your ability to roll over larger obstacles when riding off-road. Additionally, the Trek 800 mountain bike might not be suited for those seeking a good bike with advanced specifications.

Different Trek 800 Models

When it comes to the Trek 800 series, various models are available to suit different preferences and needs. We’ll focus on two popular models from this brand - the Trek 800 Antelope and the Trek 800 Sport.

These bicycles come with unique features designed to cater to different types of cyclists, so we'll examine each of them in detail.

Trek 800 Antelope

The Trek 800 Antelope has garnered a reputation as a durable and reliable mountain bike among riders. A key reason for its popularity is its high-tensile strength frame, built to withstand harsh outdoor conditions while maintaining optimal comfort levels during rides. This model offers the following features:

  • Strong steel frames for enhanced durability
  • Rigid front suspension forks for improved stability on rugged terrain
  • High-quality Shimano components and a rear derailleur for smooth gear shifting
  • Large cargo capacity, making it suitable for backpacking trips

Trek 800 Sport

The Trek 800 Sport model is designed for riders who desire a versatile bike that can handle various cycling activities. It’s equipped with numerous features that provide an enjoyable and comfortable experience on various terrains, including:

  • Lightweight aluminum frame for improved maneuverability and speed
  • Suspension forks for better handling on bumpy roads

Cycling Safety Innovations of Trek 800

The Trek 800 is an all-in-one versatile bike that has gained popularity among cycling enthusiasts for its ruggedness and dependability. In this section, we'll delve into the safety innovations that set the Trek 800 apart from its competitors, making it an excellent choice for riders who value exceptional design and reliable performance.

Starting with its build, the Trek 800 is designed with a TIG-welded Chromoly frame that offers lightweight properties and resistance to rust, ensuring the bike's longevity, especially while riding on an uneven Trek mountain track. This lightweight frame contributes to better handling and maneuverability, enhancing the rider's safety.

Also, the Trek 800's braking system adds to its safety advantage. Power while descending or stopping on slippery surfaces is crucial, and the Trek 800 provides riders with effective and reliable braking that instills confidence and security on unpredictable trails.

Furthermore, the Trek 800 has Bontrager Connection tires, which have excellent traction on various surfaces. This ensures proper grip and stability while cycling, thus reducing the risk of accidents and enhancing the overall safety of the rider.

Pinkbike's 2023 Mountain Bike of the Year

"Slash checks all the boxes for long-travel performance with super-aggressive geometry, loads of adjustability, and mind-blowing high-pivot suspension that makes you feel like a hero. Don't take our word for it, check out why Pinkbike crowned Slash Bike of the Year."

No image available

"Upping the game"

"The Slash and the new Vivid shock are a true power couple and required almost zero tuning to get me to a happy spot [...] props to Trek on nailing a great tune for most riders [...] Trek Slash ranks very high on my list of bikes ridden in the last two years. If climbing takes a back seat to downhill capabilities – fun, charging hard and going big – you may not want to wait until we’ve logged enough miles for our long-term review to pull the trigger."

No image available

"Impressive"

"This is without doubt the most efficient high-pivot idler bike I’ve pedalled. While the travel is plush, there’s good support so you can pop and pump down the trail, with a lively and light ride character, while still remaining stable and composed when the trails get rough. Trek has shown what's possible here and it's impressive"

No image available

"Slaps a huge smile on your face"

"Slash 2024 is the next evolutionary stage of high pivot bikes, bringing all the advantages of a high pivot suspension design while at the same time eliminating most of its drawbacks."

No image available

"More ‘dynamic edge’ than ever before"

"So there are a lot of little things on this Slash that combine really well to produce extra sparkle on the trail. First off, let me just say the suspension performance is simply sensational. The shock requires very little force to move and it changes direction quickly – it feels as buttery as a coil shock. I’d even say the small bump performance is better than any air shock I’ve ridden. Diving into the deeper end of the travel it feels like there is more than 160mm available."

WATCH: Russian 'black blizzard' sweeps through Moscow as city is covered in snow

By Georgia Pearce

Published: 27/11/2023

Updated: 27/11/2023

Russia has been transformed by a rare 'black blizzard', as heavy snowfall sweeps across the European nation.

The storm, which began on Sunday night, coated Moscow in a heavy blanket of snow and has sent social media users into a frenzy at the result.

Posted on X, formerly Twitter, one local posted an incredible clip of St. Basil's Cathedral covered in snow, accompanied by trees covered in fairy lights.

The video, which had magical-themed music dubbed over the footage, shows the Cathedral covered in thick snow, as the blizzard continues to fall down on the city.

Head of Russia’s Hydrometeorological Centre, Roman Vilfand, warned it’s going to be "one of the strongest snowfalls that ever happened in November."

The weather phenomenon, usually encountered in the Far North, causes snowflakes to fly almost parallel to the surface, decreasing visibility to around 100 metres on the road.

The 'black blizzard' has amounted to 35% of the monthly average of precipitation already for Russia.

Sonequa Martin-Green bids farewell to historic role on "Star Trek: Discovery"

By Analisa Novak

April 4, 2024 / 12:07 PM EDT / CBS News

As "Star Trek: Discovery " ventures into its fifth and final season, Sonequa Martin-Green is preparing to say goodbye to her groundbreaking role as Captain Michael Burnham, the first Black female captain in the franchise's storied history.

Martin-Green recalls the weight of realizing she was making television history.

"It was overwhelming at the time. And I it was heavy, but God really blessed me with it, and I learned so much from it. I learned so much about who I am as a Black woman. And I learned that I don't have to fight for my value or my worth, because I definitely felt that way," she said.

When she first started in the role in 2017, Martin-Green said she still had a lot of internalized racism she had to navigate. But just like the show, Martin-Green said she has always been about pushing forward with hope.

"At the time, I thought, 'This is all about hope.' Hope is at the center of this franchise. It's our responsibility to keep that moving forward. People can think what they want to think but they need a chance to grow," she said.

In addition to her on-screen achievements, Martin-Green has also made significant strides behind the camera, ascending from lead actor to executive producer. Her dual role has allowed her to shape the series' direction.

Martin-Green said that the final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" will go "bigger than we had ever done before." Despite not knowing it would be their last season, the team, led by showrunners Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman, fought for and received the opportunity reshoot the series' finale.

As "Discovery" comes to a close, Martin-Green hints at the possibility of continuing the story through a feature film.

"We love these characters. We love the people. We love the story," she said.
