Trek Domane AL 2 Review: High-End Endurance on a Budget

trek domane road bike

An affordable mid-range road bike for those looking to level up their weekend rides to something a bit more competitive.

The Domane AL 2 is a good bike for those looking for an introduction to competitive road racing. It may not have all the bells and whistles of an expensive road bike but provides everything needed to put some serious hours in on the tarmac.

You’ll struggle to find a road bike under $1,000 that comes equipped with the same quality parts and advanced frame geometry.

Trek Domane AL 2 Quick Overview

Main features, is trek domane al 2 worth the money, final verdict.

Trek Domane AL 2

Overall, the Trek Domane AL 2 is an excellent introductory road bike for amateur riders looking to take their cycling to the next level.

It has a professional frame feel, but it’s not too aggressive so it doesn’t take the fun out of the ride.

If you’re looking for quality at an affordable price, it’s hard to fault the Trek Domane AL 2.

Whether you simply want comfort and performance for weekend rides or a bike that will help you compete professionally, it’ll do the job.

Get From Trek

The Trek Domane AL 2 combines midrange Shimano components with a high-quality frame, carbon fork, and some nice finishing touches to provide a smooth, solid ride.

Lightweight endurance frame

Lightweight frame

The Domane AL 2 adopts Trek ‘s high-performance 100 Series Alpha aluminum frame for a blend of comfort and performance.

The frame aims to strike a balance between saving on weight while maintaining decent strength and stiffness.

All frames come fitted with a lightweight Trek carbon fork to keep the weight down and provide a comfortable ride.

The endurance geometry is another well-balanced work of art that manages to put the rider in a race-ready position without compromising on comfort. The frames have an average 74-degree seat tube angle with 8cm of clearance on the bottom bracket and 37.4cm of frame reach on the midsize (54cm) bike.

Frame sizes range from 44cm to 62cm to accommodate riders of almost any height. The smallest 44cm model has a 65.7cm standover height, with an 84.2cm standover height on the largest unisex model

IsoSpeed Carbon Fork

The Trek IsoSpeed headset and carbon fork is designed to provide a smoother ride while improving stiffness and reducing weight.

It features a unique dropout placement that optimizes the wheelbase and a rocker cup with zero lateral movement for extra precision.

The slightly wider fork provides additional tire clearance, allowing for wider tires if you feel the desire to tackle tougher terrain.

Shimano Claris Drivetrain

Shimano Claris drivetrain

Shimano provides the gears, derailleurs, and shifters for the Domane AL 2. Trek has chosen to go with the Claris R2000 gearing system which, while not top of the range, provides a smooth shifting experience.

Claris is a well-trusted gearing system used on many midrange road bikes. Some professional riders may opt to upgrade to Shimano’s Sora or Tiagra system at a later stage but if well maintained, Claris gears shouldn’t give any trouble.

The rear cassette features 8 speeds ranging from 11T to 34T and on the front crank is a compact double ring with 50 and 34T cogs.

DuoTrap S Compatibility

The Bontrager DuoTrap S digital sensor is a nifty tool that can be attached to compatible Trek bicycles for measuring cycling data. Rather than messy, makeshift zip ties, the DuoTrap S screws securely onto the frame and transmits data wirelessly to your phone or bicycle computer.

You can use the DuoTrap’s combined ANT+ 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth signals to simultaneously send data to both your phone and a Trip 300 cycling computer. The sensor is concealed neatly on the inside of your chainstay to maintain a clean appearance and aerodynamic functionality.

Blendr Compatible Stem

The bike is compatible with Blendr

The Trek Domane AL 2 features a stem that is compatible with the Blendr integration system for cycling accessories. It allows for the easy attachment of various holders for lights, computers, phone holders, and navigation systems.

Blendr is a proprietary stem attachment system developed by Trek’s Bontrager components team. It fits a wide range of purpose-built Blendr Duo Base attachments to fit almost any bicycle accessory. No need for any more fiddly screw-on or clip-on attachments that often fail, putting your devices at risk.

There are seven sizes of Trek Domane AL 2 for riders 4’11” to 6’3″

  • 44 : 4’11” – 5’0″
  • 49 : 5’1″ – 5’4″
  • 52 : 5’4″ – 5’6″
  • 54 : 5’6″ – 5’9″
  • 56 : 5’9″ – 5’11”
  • 58 : 5’11” – 6’1″
  • 61 : 6’1″ – 6’3″

Trek Domane AL 2 is worth the money!

It fits neatly into the price range of road bikes with similar components. While you might find cheaper bikes with a Shimano Claris drivechain, not many would benefit from the same quality frame materials that Trek is famous for.

When you add the lightweight carbon fork and high-quality finishing touches, you have a bike that would be difficult to beat for around $1,000. If you can afford the extra cash for the Domane AL3 and want slightly better parts, go for it. But if you want value for money, with the Domane AL 2, you certainly can’t go wrong.

The Domane AL 2 is part of a range of Trek bikes aimed at riders looking to advance their road cycling to the next level. While it is one of the lowest-specced bikes in the range, it is in no way a beginner’s bike.

The Domane AL 2 is the perfect bike for an amateur rider that wants to begin competing more seriously in competitions or weekend sports.

If you feel you are already past the stage of an amateur competitor, you could check out the slightly upgraded Domane AL3. It’s slightly lighter and benefits from a Shimano Sora groupset.

The All-New Trek Domane AL Gen 4 Gets a Half-Pound Lighter with More Room for Tires

Now on its fourth iteration, the Trek Domane AL is packed with updates, a lighter frame, and room for larger tires. The new Gen 4 Domane comes in economical offerings for the most bang for the buck and looks like a gateway bike for other disciplines.

Trek Domane AL Gen 4 Full logo

The Domane AL is Trek’s entry-level do-it-all road bike boasts the most versatility in its lineup. The frame is aluminum, the fork is carbon, and the accessory mounts are plentiful, meaning this bike can do much more than a local fondo.

Whats New — Trek Domane AL Gen 4

The Trek Domane AL is entering a new life in Gen 4, and it’s getting bigger all-road tire clearance (up to 38mm), a sleeker frame design with internal cable routing.

Trek Domane AL Gen 4 Full headtube

New Frame and Fork Material

Trek says the new Domane AL (complete bike) is around half a pound lighter than the previous Domane AL Disc model.

Trek Domane AL Gen 4 Full logo of bike

How? Mainly from the redesigned frame made with Trek’s 100 Series Alpha Aluminum and a new full-carbon fork.

Trek Domane AL Gen 4 Full tire clearance

Can it double as a gravel bike? Yes — Word from Trek is that the max tire size is 38mm, which seems true for most tires, though it depends on your rim width. We had zero problems getting a 40mm Maxxis Reaver tire rolling in the frame, but the chainstay clearance is slightly tight. It’s good that Bontrager makes the GR1 in a 35mm width; that tire on this bike would be fast and fun.

Trek Domane AL Gen 4 Full rear brake

Don’t let the carbon fork fool you; it doesn’t make this bike less of an all-arounder. The fork and newly designed frame come with plenty of mounts for fenders, bag (top tube), and anything you can think of to improve your commuter or race.

Trek Domane AL Gen 4 Full UDH

Universal Derailleur Hanger

For the first time, Domane AL comes with a new thru-axle for Universal Derailleur Hanger compatibility. This design is the same UDH on Trek mountain bikes. This means fewer hangers around the basement and more cross-category compatibility with other bikes.

Trek Domane AL Gen 4 Full bars view

What’s That Handlebar?

The front end is more modern on the new Domane, thanks partly to the headset’s internal cable routing and an updated bar. The Trek Domane AL Gen 4 gets a modern road bar with a shorter reach and a 4mm flare between the hoods and drops.

Trek Domane Geo

Trek Domane AL Gen 4 Geometry

The geometry remains unchanged for the Domane AL from previous versions. The setup is the Trek endurance geometry, which isn’t too aggressive and laid back enough for newer riders to feel comfortable.

Trek Domane AL Gen 4 Models and Pricing

The new Trek Domane AL Gen 4 comes in three different build options, starting at $1,200 and tops out at $2,000. All have the same updated 100 Series Alpha Aluminum frame and a new full-carbon fork.

The difference is in the components and hubs. All three bikes feature the same handlebar/stem, saddle, rims, and seatpost.

How about dropping weights in metric too. Can’t be that difficult.

Jordan Villella

Just added – thanks!

Nick

The “brake bridge” in the photos is for mounting fenders and need not be installed for normal use…the formed headtube is also not new, my 2018 Emonda ALR has a hydroformed headtube, also. Glad Trek is still making aluminum road bikes, though.

Veganpotter

This formed headtube is a new formed headtube. I think even the first gen Domane AL had a hydroformed headtube too. But they’ve updated it with every iteration.

Pretty great that there’s a $1200 bike, even if it’s Sora

art

Crazy, over 23#!. my 30 year old steel slim chance is 19#, my aluminum co-motion tandem is only a pound heavier. I was selling Centurion Ironmans 30 years ago, steel, and only 20# at $550! Progress?

Tim

I stopped reading when it said headset cable routing.

Cables passing through the headset at this price level – INSANITY! The owner will never want to pay what it will cost to replace the bearings. A quick note, you wrote that it has: “a modern road bar with a shorter reach and a 4mm flare between the hoods and drops” I know you guys struggle with metric, but I assume you mean 4 degrees, because 4 mm is effectively nothing there.

Product Description

Bike sizing guide.

Choosing the bike size depends on the type of bike, your height, your riding style, and your preference. A correct fitting bike will be more comfortable, more efficient and more fun to ride. This bike size guide gives our customers general advice on choosing the right size. It is a guide only and we always recommend visiting one of our stores or contacting one of our experts from our contact us page.

To get started, think about your style of riding, measure your height and use the links above for sizing on relevant bike types.

  Measure your height

To find the correct sized bike you will need to measure your height and your inside leg. For your height, stand against a wall and mark the wall with a pencil so it's level with the top of your head. Then measure from the ground up to the mark (having someone to help might make this easier). For your inside leg measurement, stand against a wall and using a book hold it in between your legs into your groin and make sure it's flat against the wall. Measure the height from the book to the floor. (Again it might be easier to get a friend to help). If your height is on the cusp of the size range, your reach is often the deciding factor in which size to go for. To find out if you have short or long reach you will need to measure your ape index. This is your arm span minus your height. If you have a positive ape index then go for the larger size, or if you have a negative ape index go for a smaller size.

  The type of bike

What type of bike you choose will affect the bike size you buy. The type or style of riding that you do will also affect which size you need. For example a mountain biker that wants to ride more aggressively and would like a more manoeuvrable bike may prefer a size smaller than they would normally take. Likewise a cross country racer that is looking for a flatter and speedier mountain bike may prefer a size larger than they would normally take. There is no definitive right or wrong size, it all comes down to personal preference and what feels comfortable. The different types of bikes are all explained within our buying guides.

  How are bikes measured?

Bikes are measured by their seat tube length. This measurement is normally from the centre of the bottom bracket (BB) or the centre of the bolt that attached the crank arms. This differs by brand, some measure to the top of where the top tube meets the seat tube, or even the centre of the top tube. Mountain bikes are either measured in inches or descriptive sizes (small, medium etc). Road bikes are in centimetres or descriptive sizes where as Hybrid bikes can be any one of the three. Bikes also get longer as they go up in size (relative to the frame size) but different brands can be inherently longer or shorter than others.

  Stand over height

Stand over height is how tall the frame is from the ground. Stand over height measurements are to the top of the top-tube. Ideally you want at least 2cm of clearance between you and the frame. In theory your stand over height is your leg measurement minus 2cm. It it worth measuring your inside leg with your shoes on so you can establish your stand over height. Should you need to jump off the saddle quickly, the clearance between you and the frame will prevent any injuries.

This handy chart should show you the right size of MTB you need based on your height. Measure your height accurately and check the manufacturer’s measurements too. You can also visit us in store to speak to an experienced member of staff.

Trek Domane 2.0 review

Radical frame design for smooth speed

Philip Sowels/Future Publishing

Guy Kesteven

trek domane al 2 2020

While it takes some brands several years to trickle down their latest technologies to lower priced bikes, Trek have introduced their radical IsoSpeed decoupler design right through their new Domane range. The result is an outstandingly smooth and enjoyable high-miler.

  • Highs: A new level of smooth cruising, sweet handling and surefootedness but responsive under power
  • Lows: Tall position and weight mean it’s not the fastest climber, and you only get Tiagra
  • Buy if: You want the ultimate in high-speed cruising comfort

Instead of a fixed connection between top tube, seatstays and seat tube, Trek’s ‘IsoSpeed decoupler’ pivots let the seat tube bow back and forth in response to road or rider loads. A slimmed down pivot section at the top of the tube also means you get a more flexible skinny seatpost, while the Affinity saddle is generously padded too. Add broad rimmed Bontrager wheels and Trek really are declaring war on belligerent backroads and bad backs alike.

Being naturally cynical we headed for the nearest heavily potholed country lane we could find. But any hopes of exploding hype were dashed immediately, as the Domane genuinely soaks up a startling amount of surface abuse without knocking you off your stride.

The slim fork blades and rolled back dropouts do a similar – if not as dramatic – job up front. Add a tall ride position and chunky taped compact bars and the Trek breezes over the roughest sections that would blow other bikes all over the place. The fixed plane movement keeps tracking reliably predictable too, syncing with Trek’s confident, relaxed handling plus traction-enhancing ‘suspension’ to make the Domane an outstandingly assured descender.

It’s great to see Trek’s effective decoupler on a bike at this price

What’s really remarkable is how good it feels under power. Despite fat, thick walled tyres, low wheel weight keeps rotating responsiveness reasonable and even with the decoupler our large size frame still wasn’t that heavy. But the Tiagra means extra weight too, so it’s not the most avid climber or speedster.

Once you’re rolling, however, the limousine-like smoothness sustains speed very well and there’s no shortage of stiffness through cranks and chainstays to keep the speed topped up with a burst of torque either.

Finally, while you can get it to ‘row’ backwards and forwards if you really try, the triple chainset means you’ll never struggle to spin rather than stomp. Neat little touches such as the screw-in guard and rack mounts make it a practical choice too.

Trek Domane - Weight, Specs, Price

Trek domane 3rd party reviews, 2022 trek domane review - a tpc quick-take.

  • IsoSpeed Technology: A standout feature, the rear IsoSpeed decouplers absorb fatiguing road chatter. They make the ride unmistakably smooth, like riding on a cushion of air.
  • Storage integration: The built-in storage compartment on the down tube is genuinely useful. It beats having to strap a saddlebag to the frame and clutter the bike.
  • Versatility: Generous tire clearance (up to 38mm without fenders) and the overall design mean the Domane is adept at handling both tarmac and light gravel. It opens up avenues for exploration beyond the usual road routes.
  • Endurance geometry: Maintaining the spirit of the Domane lineage, the 2023 version offers a comfortable, upright riding position suited for long rides.
  • Weight: (18.5 lbs size 56cm) The Domane, with all its tech and features, is on the heavier side, especially in its base models. This might not be a concern for the casual rider, but weight weenies might raise an eyebrow.
  • Cost: The technology packed into the Domane makes it a bit pricey. While you get a lot for your money, it might be overkill for those not intending to utilize all its features.
  • Aero compromises: Compared to race or aero road bikes, the Domane doesn't cut through the wind as efficiently. It's built for comfort over speed, and it shows.
  • Over-engineering for some: While tech enthusiasts might rejoice, the myriad of features could be overwhelming for someone looking for a simple endurance experience.

Jan 2021 · Dave Rome

Trek's new entry-level road bike combines an endurance fit with sporty handling and a whole bunch of versatility.

Huge tyre clearance, unique geometry is great for the purpose, quite comfortable ride quality, easy to service and upgrade, rides lighter than it feels to pick up, Shimano Tiagra just works, rim width, quality thru-axles.

Basic and heavy frame, making the bike tubeless requires new tyres and a handful of parts, extremely heavy wheels (especially given the bike’s price), handlebar drop shape is too compact.
