Foreign travel insurance

If you’re travelling abroad, it's important to take out appropriate travel insurance before you go.

If you travel internationally you should buy appropriate travel insurance before you go. If you already have a travel insurance policy, check what cover it provides for coronavirus-related events, including medical treatment and travel disruption, and any planned activities such as adventure sports. If you are choosing a new policy, make sure you check how it covers these issues.

If you do not have appropriate insurance before you travel, you could be liable for emergency expenses, including medical treatment, which may cost thousands of pounds.

For example:

You should buy your travel insurance as soon as possible after booking your trip. Read the small print, and familiarise yourself with any exclusion clauses for the policy.

When you travel, make sure you take your insurance policy details with you, including the policy number and your insurer’s emergency assistance telephone number. Share your policy details with people you’re travelling with and friends or family at home, in case they need to contact your insurance company on your behalf.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) represents over 200 insurance companies. Read ABI’s advice on travel insurance , including how COVID-19 can affect it, and their guide on choosing the right travel insurance policy .

In addition to making sure you have appropriate insurance, you should check and sign up to travel advice for your destination.

What to consider when you buy travel insurance for you and your family

  • emergency treatment and hospital bills can be expensive. Check whether your policy covers treatment in public or private hospitals
  • emergency transport, such as an ambulance, is often charged separately to other medical expenses, and emergency travel home on medical grounds can also be expensive
  • pre-existing medical conditions: declare existing conditions or pending treatment or tests so that you are covered if anyone gets ill during your trip. Failing to declare something may invalidate your travel insurance
  • all activities you may undertake on holiday, such as sports or adventure tourism (you may need specialist insurance for some activities). Also consider all the places you intend to visit, even if you are in transit, in case anyone needs emergency treatment in another country
  • cruises generally require an additional level of cover because it is more difficult to get to hospital for treatment. Check the booking conditions of the operator you plan to sail with
  • repatriation costs if you or a family member die abroad
  • getting home after medical treatment if you cannot use your original ticket
  • reasonable costs for a family member or friend to stay with you, or travel out to accompany you home, if required
  • 24-hour assistance helplines to offer support and advice about appropriate treatment
  • COVID 19 cover for if you or family members cannot return home because you/they test positive for COVID during your travel. Check your insurance covers additional costs such as alternative flights, accommodation and COVID tests. You should also check your insurance provides cover if you cannot reach your final destination during transit due to COVID-19
  • within Europe, some insurers may waive any excess on medical treatment if you use a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). Check the terms of your policy or contact your insurer to see if this is the case. EHIC and GHIC allow you to access state-provided medically necessary healthcare within the EU and Switzerland on the same terms as residents of these countries. Note that EHIC and GHIC are not alternatives to travel insurance as they do not cover any private medical healthcare costs, repatriation or additional costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts. Find out more about the EHIC and GHIC, including how to apply for one free of charge
  • ATOL is a consumer protection scheme for air holidays and flights, managed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) . Some insurance policies do not provide cover for when airlines or suppliers go out of business. Choose an ATOL-protected holiday or a travel insurance policy that includes airline or supplier failure cover

Policy exclusions

Check how an insurance policy covers:

  • alcohol and drugs: most travel insurance policies do not cover events that happen after you have drunk excessive alcohol or taken recreational drugs or other substances
  • high risk destinations: many travel insurance policies will not cover travel to a high risk destination where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel or all travel. Check your policy wording and the relevant country travel advice pages before booking your trip and buying insurance
  • mental health conditions: some policies may exclude cover for treatment related to a pre-existing mental health condition. For more guidance see foreign travel advice for people with mental health issues
  • age restrictions: check whether there are any age-related restrictions if you are buying an annual policy. The Money Advice Service provides guidance on how to choose the right level of cover, get the best deal, and make a travel insurance claim. It also has specific guidance for travellers over the age of 65 or with pre-existing medical conditions
  • sports such as bungee jumping, jet skiing, winter sports or skydiving: these are not usually included in standard policies. Use of quad bikes and hire of mopeds is also usually not covered
  • driving overseas: check Driving abroad . If you’re hiring a car, check what cover the hire company provides. If you are driving your own vehicle, check your motor insurance policy to see what it covers
  • terrorist acts: most policies offer only limited cover for terrorist acts. As a minimum, make sure your policy covers you for emergency medical expenses and travel home if you are caught up in a terrorist attack. Some travel insurers offer policy add-ons to provide additional cover if there is a terrorist attack in your destination. This may include cancellation cover, if your destination is affected by a terrorist attack before your trip and you decide you no longer wish to travel
  • other incidents: some policies only offer limited cover for claims related to or caused by a natural disaster (such as an earthquake or tropical cyclone) or civil unrest. You may also not be covered for some claims that arise from an incident (such as strikes or other industrial action) that was known publicly when you booked your trip and/or bought your travel insurance policy

Insurance for extended periods of travel

‘Long-stay’ travel insurance can cover extended periods of continuous travel. Check carefully the maximum duration allowed in any policy you consider buying to ensure that it meets your needs.

Make sure that the entire policy meets your needs, including specific activities and work (paid or unpaid) you may undertake.

Insurance if you live abroad or go for work or study

Travel insurance is not intended for permanent residence abroad. If you live overseas, or you’re planning to move to a different country to live, work or study, you should consider your insurance needs carefully. Local law may require you to have medical insurance, including as part of a visa application.

Read the healthcare guidance in the Living in guide for the country where you live to ensure you have the right healthcare arrangements for your circumstances.

You can buy private medical insurance for UK expatriates. You can also buy insurance from local providers overseas. You should always check policies carefully, including seeing whether you could transfer medical cover if you re-locate to other countries in future.

Visitors to the United Kingdom

Uk travel insurance and safety tips for visitors.

UK Flag Visitors Will recognize

The weather is another consideration. Unless your travel is confined strictly to the summer months, plan on encountering low temperatures, and even if you are traveling in the summer, you shouldn’t count on it being warm and sunny. In Edinburgh, the average daily July temperature doesn’t break 15°C (60°F), and at night the July average drops to 11°C (52°F), hardly tank tops and shorts weather.

From the mysterious magic of Stonehenge to the sparkle of the crown jewels, the United Kingdom offers something for everyone. Totaling less than 100,000 square miles, and with London just a three-hour train ride from Paris, the UK offers a wide variety of cultures, experiences, and even languages within its borders, encompassing Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and England . Be assured speaking English will undoubtedly suffice for travelers and those visiting the UK.

However short your visit is, you should count on having rain and damp weather. Having good rain gear in your luggage ensures you have the most enjoyable stay. Of course, we suggest tourists also have a good UK travel insurance plan before departure. What else should you know to make sure that your stay in the UK is healthy and safe so you can fully enjoy your time there? Let’s take a closer look.

Embassy Phone Numbers in the UK

  • United States: +44 20 7499 9000
  • Canada: +44 20 7004 6000
  • Australia: +44 20 7379 4334
  • New Zealand: +44 20 7930 8422

All embassies are located in London, but larger cities such as Belfast and Edinburgh are likely to host a consulate which can be a valuable resource if you are located closer to one of these cities.

Essential Safety Tips for Visitors to the UK

The United Kingdom has a reputation as a safe place for travelers. However, usual precautions should be taken, especially when traveling and living in large cities where thefts, muggings, and sexual assaults do occur. It’s a good idea not to carry too much cash or valuables as you move about and to keep secure copies of important documents such as passports and credit cards. When going out for an evening, do not leave drinks unattended.

Unfortunately, terrorism remains a threat in the United Kingdom; the Canadian government advises a “high degree of caution”. The UK has placed its current threat level at severe. You can check the latest UK threat level here , and U.S. Citizens can enroll in the STEP program to receive the latest warnings and updates from the State Department. General advice for staying safe in the face of this danger includes monitoring local news, familiarizing yourself with the area, keeping the contact information for your embassy, and, for those who are visiting on a longer stay, registering with your embassy.

Emergency Assistance Numbers in the UK

Two emergency numbers in the UK will connect you with all emergency services, including ambulance, fire, and police. Both 999 and the more universal European 112 will work and function similarly to how 911 operates in the United States.

Another helpful number to have is 0845 4647  or  111, a non-emergency number that will connect you to the National Health Services, where a trained professional can help you assess your symptoms to help you decide where to seek help best.

For those staying in a residence or rental property, either as a long-term or short-term rental, it’s a good idea to have the gas emergency number: 0800 111 999 .

United Kingdom: Healthcare System and Types of Insurance

The United Kingdom provides healthcare to all citizens and permanent residents through the publicly funded National Health System (NHS). For those who do not meet the requirements to qualify for NHS coverage, it will be necessary to acquire private insurance. This is available both within the UK and can be purchased through services specifically designed for travelers and expats. While healthcare in the UK regularly receives high marks in the area of quality, the NHS has been criticized for accessibility and speed with which services are provided, causing some who have access to NHS to opt to buy additional private insurance to ensure that their health care needs are fully met. As you look through your healthcare options, this should be an important consideration for you. The NHS is so large that even private insurance services are often provided within the framework of the public system. The insurance options that you choose must provide adequate coverage that will meet your healthcare needs with the speed and efficiency with which you feel comfortable.

The United Kingdom is currently leaving the European Union. As a result, for those who are not UK residents but are EU residents, it’s important to call your current insurance provider and find out about any changes to the benefits that you would receive while traveling and living in the UK. As this is a shifting situation, getting the most up-to-date information is best.

Vaccines, Medications, and Diet Considerations for Visiting the UK

Food and clean water are readily available throughout the United Kingdom. Even those requiring a special diet, such as for diabetes or Celiac disease, can look forward to being able to find specialty foods available. Those who follow a vegan diet should expect to have a similar time as they do at home. In larger cities like London, finding markets and restaurants that cater to their diet will be much easier than in rural areas. The UK food labeling does not require as extensive labeling as the United States, but any information must be accurate and is monitored by the government.

A wide variety of prescription medications are available. You should bring a large supply of any medications you use, along with a copy of prescriptions. If there is a medication you think you may need during your stay in the UK, it’s a good idea to make sure that it is available and what name it is sold under.

You do not need any special vaccinations as a precaution to protect your health during your UK visit; however, to secure a Visa, you will need to be able to prove that all of your basic vaccinations are present and up-to-date, including polio and MMR.

Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for a UK Visa Application

Do us citizens need a visa to visit the uk.

Speaking of a visa, a visa is unnecessary for visitors from the United States and select other countries for tourism for up to six months.

Visa Requirements for UK Tourists from Other Countries

For longer stays or to secure work for a UK employer, then you will need a visa. You will need a valid passport to enter the country. For visitors from EU countries and Switzerland, currently, the UK is working to keep travel visa-free, but as this is an evolving situation, it’s best to check what the latest news is before you leave. Currently, both a passport and a National Identity Card can be used to gain entry. For travelers from other countries, check the  Visa and Immigration page on Gov.uk.

With this information, you’ll be well-prepared to take full advantage of your time in the United Kingdom. Ensuring you’ll have a healthy and safe stay means you’ll be able to make the most of your time there, for work or pleasure or both.

Do you need travel insurance for a UK holiday?

uk travel insurance mandatory

More and more Brits are choosing to holiday in the UK - but should you be taking out travel insurance if you're not going abroad?

Three quarters (75%) of UK adults have been on or were planning a UK-based holiday last year - up 70% in 2016, according to research by Barclays.

But while more people are opting for a staycation instead of jetting off abroad, most are unaware that they may need to travel insurance.

This means that as the late May Bank Holiday approaches and summer holiday season gets underway, lots of people could find themselves losing out.

Whether you're planning on trekking through the Scottish Highlands or heading to the Cornish coast, we take a look at whether or not you need travel insurance for a UK holiday.

Top UK Holiday destinations

UK-based holiday makers are flocking to locations all over the nation.

New research, from Travelodge, has revealed the top 10 most popular holiday destinations in the UK last year.

Cornwall took top spot while Devon and The Lake District came in second and third place.

Do you need insurance for UK holidays?

Lots of UK-based holidaymakers assume that you don't need travel insurance since you're essentially staying in the same country.

But unexpected and costly problems are could arise on a staycation just as they could on a trip abroad.

While access to the NHS can make insurance unnecessary for unexpected illness or injury, additional protection may be needed for other aspects of your holiday and anyone else travelling with you - includingcover for lost or stolen luggage, travel delays or cancellations.

Whether you need travel insurance will depend on how much you're planning to spend and the risk of something going wrong.

It's worth thinking about how much money you're likely to lose if the trip - or any portion of it - is cancelled, what valuables you'll have with you, and the likelihood of issues arising.

Not all trips will need cover - a weekend away at the seaside may not require insurance cover, while a week-long bicycle adventure in the remote countryside may make it worthwhile.

What does UK travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance for UK holidays covers the same breadth of scenarios as when you'd get when travelling abroad. Most policies will include the following:-

Cancellation cover

Cancelling your holiday can be extremely costly and could cause you to lose the entire cost of your trip, including accommodation and transport.

But if you had no choice - for example, if you or a family member becomes ill or injured - cancellation cover can help you claim back any money you might lose.

Be sure to check your policy wording though, as some insurers will only protect you from the start date of your trip.

This means you won't be covered for cancellations due to problems you had before your cover was due to start.

Travel delays and cancellations

If you've had to book transport in advance - including ferries, coaches, trains and planes - a travel insurance policy will cover you if you run into unexpected delays or cancellations.

Keep in mind that transport providers may not need to refund you if a trip is cancelled due to factors beyond their control - including some weather events - so insurance cover can provide peace of mind.

Some travel insurance providers exclude cover for internal flights so make sure you check with your insurer first.

Possessions cover

Some holidaymakers assume that their home contents insurance  policy will cover their belongings when they're away - but this isn't always the case.

While personal possessions cover is designed to protect portable belongings, expensive items like a bike, mobile phone, tablet or even jewellery might fall outside of the limits of your policy.

Things like your passport are unlikely to be covered by your contents insurance if it's lost or stolen while you're away either.

But another point to consider is that you could lose your no claims bonus on your contents insurance if you have to make a claim - so make sure the value of the item is worth the increased cost of your cover in future.

Hospital transfers

Thanks to the NHS, the cost of treating unexpected illnesses or injury during your UK stay isn't so much of a worry.

Issues may arise, however, when it comes to the location of your treatment.

Should you need to go to hospital, you will be taken to one closest to your holiday location rather than where you live for treatment.

Some travel insurance policies will cover the cost of having you transferred to a hospital closer to your home, as well as covering the cost of travel for your friends or family to accompany you there too.

What doesn't UK travel insurance cover?

Certain UK holidays won't be covered by travel insurance. These include:

Short breaks

Most travel insurance policies will only cover a UK holiday if the accommodation is pre-booked and your stay is for more than two or three consecutive nights.

Staying close to home

The majority of insurers require you to travel at least 50 miles away from your home for a policy to be valid. So make sure you double check that your holiday destination is far enough away from your home before taking out a policy.

Staying with family

Most travel insurance policies will only cover stays at commercial establishments like a hotel or B&B.

Getting the right level of cover

When it comes to travel insurance, getting the right level of cover is key.

It's important to start looking early on - ideally around the time that you're finalising the details of your trip.

This will give you enough time to shop around, clarify what the insurer will and won't cover, and ultimately find the best policy to suit your needs.

Avoid just going for the cheapest deal, as it may not suitable for your holiday and fail to protect you should things go wrong.

Check out our guide on how to find cheap travel insurance and watch the short video below for more help and tips.

Who Needs Travel Health Insurance When Visiting the UK?

If you’re planning to visit the UK from a country outside the European Economic Area (EEA) for less than 6 months, it is recommended that you take out valid travel insurance cover for the whole duration of your stay to help pay for medical care.

If you’re visiting from the EEA, you are entitled to free healthcare with a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) or S2 form.

However, it is also advised that you take out travel health insurance in case of other unexpected expenses and incidents that may occur during your visit, such as repatriation costs or lost or stolen property.

If you’re staying in the UK for more than 6 months, you will have to pay the  Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)  unless exempt. You will normally have to pay the fee for the IHS when submitting your visa application for your stay.

Paying the IHS allows you to access NHS services. However, it may still be advisable to take out private health insurance on top of that for other services not covered by the IHS during your stay in the UK.

Why Should I Take Out Travel Health Insurance When Visiting the UK?

Travel insurance is an important part of any trip, especially if you end up requiring unexpected medical care during your stay.

If you are visiting the UK from a non-EEA country, you will be charged at 150% of the standard NHS rate if you have not arranged insurance. As a result, it’s essential that you purchase travel insurance with medical cover before travelling to the UK so you can reclaim any healthcare costs you are required to pay from your insurer.

Travel insurance is also important as your pre-existing health insurance policy may not cover you outside of your home country, or its international coverage may be limited.

In addition, there is also the possibility of falling ill unexpectedly, suffering accidents, illness, or needing medical care because of pre-existing conditions.

Travel health insurance may also help to cover costs if your travel or accommodation plans change unexpectedly or if you misplace important documents such as your passport or airline tickets. Many insurance policies will provide you with assistance with these matters as well as reimburse you if there will be any financial costs incurred.

What Should My Travel Health Insurance Cover?

Your travel health insurance to the UK should cover most of the following:

  • Emergency medical expenses, including ambulance, medication and hospital fees
  • Medical treatment for pre-existing medical conditions
  • Personal injury  and accidents
  • Repatriation costs
  • Reimbursement for any unused travel and accommodation costs should your trip be cut short
  • Cover for lost or damaged items, including luggage, passports, credit cards, money or airline documents
  • Emergency legal aid and translation services
  • Assistance in finding suitable medical facilities in the UK

It’s important to check that the travel insurance cover necessary travel and healthcare needs to make sure you can get the treatment and medical care abroad during the period of your visit.

Insurance is particularly important for those with pre-existing medical conditions. You must tell your insurance company about any pre-existing medical conditions you have to make sure you can get the cover you need. In some cases, you may have to take out specialist cover rather than standard cover for this.

It’s advised to speak to your doctor for advice before you travel and make plans for how to care for your condition when you are in the UK. You should also bring your health condition identification or a letter saying what medication you are taking.

What Isn’t Covered By Travel Health Insurance?

Travel health insurance policies often have exclusions, which are specific situations or circumstances that will not be covered by the insurance policy.

For example, not declaring your pre-existing medical condition to your insurer will mean that you won’t be able to claim for medical care related to your condition during your trip.

In addition, you likely won’t be able to claim back costs if you do any of the following:

  • Travel against government advice, such as if the country you’re travelling from places an active travel warning on the UK
  • Travel despite known events, such as natural disasters or pandemics
  • Incur losses due to carelessness or lack of reasonable safety measures, such as leaving your belongings unattended in a public place
  • Engage in reckless behaviour, such as ignoring safety protocols, safety instructions, or if you injured yourself under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Break the law, such as violating local traffic laws

In addition to these, if you cancel or change your plans for any reason not listed in your base plan, you won’t be able to claim the costs on your insurance.

However, most insurance providers will provide an optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage to your policy that will allow you to change or cancel plans for any reason and claim back some or all of the money.

It’s essential that you familiarise yourself with the details of your insurance policy carefully before setting off on your trip to the UK. Many travel health insurance policies have strict guidelines on what they do and do not cover, so it’s important to know what these are in order to prevent unexpected costs during your trip.

What Else Should I Look For When Taking Out an Insurance Policy?

As previously mentioned, it’s essential that your insurance policy covers any essential travel and medical expenses that may be incurred during your visit to the UK, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition.

In addition to this, you should also consider the following:

Who You’re Travelling With

If you’re travelling with other people, it may be cheaper and more convenient to get a single insurance policy that covers the whole party rather than individual policies for each person.

For example, many insurance providers offer travel health insurance for couples, families, or groups of friends.

Note that if a person in your party has a pre-existing medical condition, they may require their own individual specialist cover separate from the rest of the group due to differences in coverage plans.

You may find travel health insurance more expensive if you’re over the age of 65. As a result, you may have to look for specialist policies for older travellers to ensure that you have the coverage you need.

Sports or Recreational Activities

If you plan to take part in sports or recreational activities, you will need to ensure that your travel health insurance covers these. This is especially the case if they’re considered to be high-risk activities, such as surfing, BMX, scuba diving, or winter sports.

Method of Travel

It’s worth noting that some methods of travel such as cruises or budget airlines may be excluded from certain travel insurance policies. You should always make sure that your method of travel is covered by your policy, in case of unexpected delays, cancellations or complications.

Add-ons and Extensions

You may wish to purchase additional add-ons or extensions to your travel health policy. For example, if you’re bringing a lot of expensive gadgets or equipment with you to the UK, you may want to purchase extra gadget cover as part of your insurance policy.

Additionally, you may want to add on additional Cancel For Any Reason cover if you want greater freedom and flexibility in being able to change or cancel your travel plans for reasons not covered by your base policy.

Do I Need Single Trip Cover or Annual Multi-Trip Cover for my Trip?

You can buy either single trip cover or annual multi-trip cover before your departure.

Single trip cover only grants you insurance coverage for a single holiday. Your coverage can start either as soon as you book the holiday or the date of your departure, and will end as soon as you come home.

Meanwhile, annual multi-trip insurance grants you coverage for every single trip you take within a 12 month period. The trips you take during this time may be limited to a certain length of time – for example, 31 days.

It may be cheaper to get annual multi-trip cover if you’re planning to go on several trips in a 12 month period. However, if you’re not planning on making many other trips other than your single trip to the UK, it may be cheaper to stick to single trip cover.

If you’re unsure about how many trips you might take in the next 12 months, it may be cheaper and easier to take out an annual multi-trip policy so you know you are covered if you do decide to go abroad.

It’s always best to carefully examine your own circumstances and plans to see which specific type of cover will be more cost-effective and suitable for you.

When Should I Buy Travel Health Insurance?

It’s usually recommended to buy travel health insurance as soon as you’ve booked your trip, or as soon as you’ve made a financial commitment towards it.

This is because it’s best to be covered in the event of your trip being cancelled prior to your departure. Having a valid travel insurance policy will protect you in case any of the following happens:

  • Your trip is cancelled due to weather, or other uncontrollable circumstances
  • You have to cancel your trip due to personal reasons, such as a bereavement
  • You become too ill to travel
  • You’re made redundant before your trip

If any of these happen, it may be the case that your insurer could cover some or all of the costs of your trip.

If you’ve left it late to buy travel health insurance before your visit to the UK, it’s still worth looking for insurance providers who will be able to provide you with quick and immediate cover. You just need to ensure that you’ve not yet left home for your trip and that the insurance policy covers everything you need for your visit.

How Much Does Travel Health Insurance Cost?

How much you will have to pay for travel health insurance depends greatly on a number of factors, such as your age, your health, the length of your trip and the complexity of the cover you need.

The specific figures you’ll pay for your insurance will vary based on your country of residence and the insurance company you choose.

Note that the information below uses British travellers buying insurance for trips away from the UK as an example.

The difference between a single trip and annual multi-trip insurance can be reasonably small. For example, British travellers travelling to Europe may pay around £9 for single trip cover but around £12 for annual multi-trip cover.

The average price for older travellers is also much higher. The average price of a single trip cover for British adults travelling to Europe in their 30s, 40s or 50s maybe around £11. However, this figure jumps up to around £30 for people in their 70s, and over £100 for people in their 80s.

How comprehensive your insurance coverage is will also affect the price. A policy that offers higher levels of coverage will cost more than a policy with basic level coverage, as well as offering lower levels of excess.

For British travellers taking our multi-trip cover to Europe, a cover with £1,000 worth of cancellation cover will cost around $17. For £2,000 cancellation cover, this price rises to around £24. For £3,000, it rises again to around £32.

These prices also rise in a similar way when buying couples, group or family travel health insurance cover.

You will also have to pay additional costs on your insurance policy if you have a pre-existing medical condition or choose to add optional extra cover such as for gadgets, winter sports and Cancel For Any Reason coverage.

Which NHS Services Are Free for Visitors?

When you visit the UK, you will be able to take advantage of certain NHS services that you don’t have to claim for on your travel health insurance.

As a result, you will not need to claim on your insurance if you take advantage of these services during your visit. These include:

  • A&E services (not including emergency medical treatment if admitted to hospital)
  • Family planning services (not including abortions or infertility treatment)
  • Treatment for most infectious diseases, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Treatment required for a physical or mental condition caused by torture, female genital mutilation (FGM), domestic violence or sexual violence (does not apply if you have come to the UK to seek this treatment)

In addition, if you’re visiting the UK and need to see a GP, you can register as a temporary patient with a local GP practice.

You will need to be in the area for more than 24 hours but less than 3 months in order to do this.

However, it will be up to the GP practice whether to accept new patients, even if you’re only looking to become a temporary patient.

Other NHS services, such as hospital treatments and prescription medicines, are not free without a valid EHIC, PRC or S2 form or if you’re from a non-EEA country. You should consider travel insurance packages that provide cover for such medical costs and others outside the NHS services.

Do I Need Travel Insurance For The UK?

Although the UK isn’t part of the Schengen Area, AXA’s Europe Travel insurance also covers you if you are planning on a trip to Britain.

From the bright lights of bustling London to the beautiful landscapes of Scotland, there is so much to see in the UK. You can visit Liverpool, the home of The Beatles, watch Manchester’s two famous football teams, or go back in time and visit Stonehenge, medieval castles, or Sherwood Forest - the home of Britain’s legendary outlaw Robin Hood. If the weather’s kind, there is nothing like a meal of traditional British fish and chips by the seaside.

Sports fans can also visit some of the world’s best golf courses or take in a game at London’s homes of cricket, Lord’s and The Oval.

In case you hadn’t noticed, there have been some changes in the United Kingdom’s status within Europe in recent years due to Brexit - which has altered Britons ability to live and work in the EU and vice versa, due to the end of free movement between the UK and EU.

However, if you are traveling as a tourist, little may change. The UK still has similar visa-free travel arrangements to the Schengen Area - but it is worth checking if your country has this arrangement. The maximum stay on a visitor’s visa is six months.

AXA’s Europe Travel insurance offers extensive protection for those traveling to the UK - as it can cover medical expenses up to €100,000 in the UK and other Schengen Area countries. It also allows you to obtain the travel insurance certificate required with your visa application.

What does AXA Europe Travel insurance for the UK cover?

Starting at €33 per week (approx. US$36) of your trip, our Europe Travel insurance covers

  • Up to €100,000 coverage in medical expenses
  • Medical repatriation & transport
  • 24/7 medical assistance in English or French in case of urgency
  • Up to 180 days of coverage
  • All Schengen and European Union countries as well as the United Kingdom (depending on the chosen insurance)
  • Insurance certificate issued immediately and approved by the embassies
  • No age limit
  • Zero deductible - which will allow you to avoid some upfront and early costs with your claim

Is travel insurance required for a UK visa?

Travel insurance is not required for UK Visitor Visas for up to six-month stays - but if you are planning on entering the Schengen Area via Britain you will need it to obtain a Schengen Visa. Either way, travel insurance is strongly recommended as medical costs can be high for foreigners, especially as you will need to pay for any prescriptions.

Do you cover emergency medical costs related to coronavirus?

We will cover your medical costs related to coronavirus provided you haven't traveled against World Health Organization advice, personal medical advice from your doctor, or any other government body’s advice in your home country or the country you are traveling to. Emergency and additional travel costs are also covered providing you have stuck to this advice.

All issued electronic certificates purchased on the axa-schengen site include this disclaimer: “ Medical fees related to COVID-19 are covered in the terms, conditions & exclusions established in the insurance policy ”. This will satisfy any embassy rules that state you must get an insurance certificate with Covid protection.

Will the AXA travel insurance meet Schengen requirements should I visit Europe?

AXA has been delivering insurance certificates that meet Schengen countries’ requirements to obtain a visa for more than 10 years.  This applies to Europe travel insurance you may take out for the UK. All you need to do is print the electronic form of the health insurance certificate and enclose it with your visa application. Each AXA Schengen insurance certificate is individualized and bears a number that is verifiable on our website.

Should I still purchase AXA insurance to cover my possible health expenses?

Travel insurance is not mandatory for the UK, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be injured or get ill. A broken wrist or nasty infection can happen to anyone! We thus strongly recommend that you subscribe to our insurance for travelers visiting Europe to make sure your trip is as safe and peaceful as possible. Particularly if tackling dangerous sports.

What are the main advantages of AXA Europe Travel insurance?

  • Compliant with European requirements for Schengen Visa. 10 years of existence
  • Immediate coverage. Your insurance covers you from the first day you need it
  • No age restriction, zero deductible
  • No price variation because of nationality or age
  • Refund if your Schengen Visa application is denied.

Why should you trust us?

  • Medical files processed by AXA Schengen in 2021: 2292
  • Medical calls processed by our agents in 2021: 3845

What insurance plans do you have to consider?

Is a schengen visa valid for the uk.

A Schengen visa is not valid for the UK, and you will need a tourist visa to travel to Great Britain. A standard visitor’s visa allows you to stay for up to six months. If you are a citizen of Ireland, an EU/EEA member state or Switzerland, you do not require a visit or holiday visa to travel to Ireland. You will also not need a visa if you are a citizen of a country with a visa free travel arrangement with the UK.

What should I do if I am injured or ill while in the UK?

Don’t worry - AXA’s Schengen insurance is here to guide, help, and protect you. In case of a medical emergency, you must contact the AXA Schengen call center at the number provided on your insurance policy. Medical assistance professionals will answer your questions and advise you 24/7 to help you find the medical center best suited to your situation and the closest to your location.

The following information must be given to the call center:

  • The number of your policy, which begins with “SCH”.
  • The address and telephone number at which you can be reached and the details of the people that can be contacted locally.
  • The dossier number, which is communicated at the time of the first call.

IMPORTANT: Remember to always keep bills/ invoices and enclose them with your file.

What should I know when preparing for my trip to the U.K.?

Security: The United Kingdom is considered a very safe country. Like anywhere, there are parts that are dangerous and should be avoided, but for the most part, completely safe to travel to. Pickpockets are known to operate in central London, and some other major cities.

Public transport: The UK has an extensive - if at times crowded - rail network that enables you to travel between major cities and towns. London is covered by an extensive bus network but services are patchier outside major cities. The London Underground may be the oldest and most famous metro train network, but other cities with networks are Merseyside (Liverpool), Tyne and Wear (Newcastle and Sunderland), and Glasgow. Other cities have tram networks including Manchester and Sheffield. You can also travel the country by coach.

Opening hours: Britain has liberal opening hours but convenience stores are usually open from around 7 or 8 am until 10 pm. Supermarkets keep similar hours but may close slightly earlier. Shops shut earlier on Sundays - often at 4 or 5 pm. In major cities, some late-night stores are available.

Driving license: In the UK, you can drive with a valid driving license from your own country or an International Driving Permit for one year before you must take out a Provisional UK Licence and put 'L' plates on your car.

Restaurants: Lunch in the UK is generally taken around 1 pm - with many restaurants and pubs opening at midday. Many cafes and pubs open earlier for breakfast. Dinner is generally eaten from around 6.30 pm onwards - with restaurants busiest after 7 pm and often closing at 11 pm - although this is when serving will end and you will be allowed to finish your meal and drinks.

Visa: Although many countries, like USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, have visa-free travel with the United Kingdom and the Schengen Area, if you think you do need a visa you can find out more, click here .

Where is Travel Insurance Mandatory?

Posted in General Travel Travel Insurance , where is travel insurance mandatory on 14 March 2023

uk travel insurance mandatory

When travelling abroad, we don’t always think about whether Travel Insurance is mandatory for the destination we are visiting. For the most part, if your destination doesn’t require a VISA to enter then Travel Insurance is thought of as an extra.

However, there are some parts of the world where Travel Insurance is legally required for you to enter the country, whether you are from a VISA free country or not! Below is a list of the countries that require you to have sufficient Travel Insurance in place before you travel and further to that we will explain what Travel Insurance covers and why you might need it.

Belize , Cuba , Ecuador , Georgia , Iran , Israel , Jamaica , Jordan , Qatar , Rwanda , Seychelles , and The UAE .

Each of the countries above have slightly different requirements for their Travel Insurance which are outlined below:

  • Belize : All visitors must purchase a policy from the Belize government known as Belize Travel Health Insurance.
  • Cuba : Travel Insurance is required for all VISAs. If you do not have a policy, you will be required to purchase one on arrival.
  • Ecuador : Travel Insurance is required to enter the country.
  • Georgia : Travel Insurance is required to enter the country.
  • Iran : Travel Insurance is required to enter the country.
  • Israel : Travel Insurance is required to enter the country.
  • Jamaica : All non-Jamaican citizens have to enrol on the “Jamaica Cares” scheme regardless of whether you have valid Travel Insurance. “Jamaica Cares” is essentially a Health Insurance plan to cover repatriation, evacuation, field rescue, and more whilst you are in Jamaica.
  • Jordan : Travel Insurance is required to enter the country. Policies must be valid for your entire stay and should include cover for Emergency Medical Services, Repatriation and Evacuation.
  • Qatar : Travel Health Insurance has been mandatory for all visitors since May 2022 and must be valid for the entire length of stay.
  • Rwanda : You will be required to choose a policy on arrival if you do not already have one. As such it makes sense to purchase a policy prior to arrival.
  • Seychelles : Travel Insurance is required to enter the country.
  • The UAE : You must be able to prove you have a valid Travel Insurance policy whether you are visiting Dubai or another city in the UAE.

There are then some countries who will require you to purchase Travel Insurance in order to obtain a VISA to enter the country. These countries include; The Schengen Area , Moldova , Nepal , Romania , Singapore , Togo , and Turkey .

  • The Schengen Area : To successfully obtain a Schengen VISA you must have Travel Insurance with at least €30,000 Emergency Medical Cover.

If you are not sure what the Schengen Area is, then please click here to read one of our recent articles that covers exactly that!

  • Moldova : If you need a Moldovan VISA, you will need to prove you have a Travel Insurance policy with €30,000 Emergency Medical Cover.
  • Nepal : Vaccinated individuals who are eligible for a VISA on arrival only need proof of vaccination and a filled-out health status form. However, if you are applying for a VISA before arriving then you will be required to purchase a Travel Insurance policy.
  • Romania : If you need a Romanian VISA, you will need to prove you have a Travel Insurance policy with €30,000 Emergency Medical Cover.
  • Singapore : Your policy must include $30,000 Covid related cover and at least $100,000 for emergency evacuation if you are not fully vaccinated.
  • Togo : You must either purchase a Travel Insurance policy or submit proof you have paid a repatriation deposit.
  • Turkey : If you require a VISA to enter Turkey under the age of 65 then you will need a Travel Insurance policy with €30,000 Emergency Medical Cover.

Why do I need Travel Insurance?

For most of these countries, you will require Travel Insurance to cover any medical treatment costs you incur whilst visiting the country. Should you fall ill abroad, your UK Global Health Insurance card (GHIC), which replaced the European Health Insurance card (EHIC), may entitle you to some cover but it is not valid in every country around the world and in countries where it is valid, is unlikely to cover the full cost of your medical bills. You should check before you travel that the country you are travelling to will accept the GHIC.

One thing to bear in mind is that if you have a pre-existing medical condition, you are likely to need to declare this when asked by your insurance company as they will need to determine whether they are able to provide cover or not. Failure to declare your conditions could lead to no cover being provided if you require medical treatment for those pre-existing conditions.

Travel Insurance is also there to provide you with protection in case you need to cancel your trip, in case your luggage is lost or stolen, in the event you experience travel delays, as well as being able to provide extra cover for areas such as winter sports or cruises.

What Travel Insurance do I need?

For most countries listed above, you need a policy that has a minimum of €30,000 Emergency Medical Cover and covers you for the entirety of your stay. Your Travel Insurance requirements will differ to those of other travellers depending on whether you have any pre-existing medical conditions, how expensive your holiday is, where you are planning to travel to, and how long you are planning to be away for amongst other reasons.

Do I need Travel Insurance for Europe?

The Schengen Area is a collection of EU countries that do require you to have Travel Insurance in order to obtain a Schengen VISA. Currently, UK travellers visiting the EU do not need a Schengen VISA and as such do not legally require Travel Insurance. Later this year there are plans to implement an ETIAS Waiver that UK travellers will need to apply for before visiting the EU ( Click here to read more on the ETIAS Waiver).

Where is Insurance Mandatory for International Travel?

Travelling to another country for the first time is rarely a cakewalk- you’ve to take care of flight tickets, visa requirements, stay, itineraries and so much more. Visa and entry-related doubts are common as different countries have their own requirements. Let us discuss one of the most common doubts: is travel insurance required for travelling abroad?

Top Travel Insurance Plans

  • Individuals
  • Sr. Citizens

What are the Entry Requirements for Trips Abroad?

Travelling to another country is more than buying flight tickets and getting a visa. Each country has varying requirements that incoming foreigners must fulfil before travelling. The documentation alone takes up a lot of time and energy. These range from certain documents, health conditions, and even the financial ability of the visitor.

Especially after the pandemic, many countries tightened their entry requirements to counter the spread of the virus. Negative RT- PCR test reports, vaccination certificates, and travel history declaration are some of the compulsory entry requirements that foreign travellers needed to know and fulfill.

One such requirement is travel insurance . Some countries need a travel health insurance covering major medical emergencies in case the traveller falls sick while visiting. During the pandemic, countries like Thailand, Dubai, Japan etc. made it compulsory for visitors to buy appropriate COVID-19 insurance. Without this insurance, the visa procedure wouldn’t proceed.

In the next section, let’s take a look at countries where travel insurance is mandatory to enter.

List of Countries Where Travel Insurance is Mandatory

Manadatory Travel Insurance

Countries where international travel insurance is mandatory need every visitor to buy a certain insurance plan before they are allowed entry. Even if some of these countries are visa-free or offer visa on arrival to Indians, they expect you to meet their specific entry requirements; including international travel insurance.

Some countries need you to buy it before applying for a visa as without the necessary coverage, your visa will be rejected. Schengen countries are infamous for this as without buying the 30,000 EUR travel insurance you won’t be issued a visa.

On the hand hand, some countries that mandated medical travel insurance during the pandemic have eased the restrictions but still advise strongly. As of now, you need to buy a mandatory travel insurance to visit these countries:

Specially after the pandemic, many countries made it compulsory for foreigners to buy international travel health insurance . While some countries like Thailand and Japan no longer mandate travel insurance, they have strongly advised it.

Countries Where Travel Insurance is Strongly Advised by the Government

Some countries have flexible entry requirements for tourists and travellers when it comes to buying travel medical insurance. They don’t stop you from applying a visa or even entering their territory but still strongly recommend buying a travel insurance plan to safeguard your trip.

Please note that entry requirements are subject to change with time. Please check the official website of the country you are visiting well before time to avoid any issues.

How to Confirm if Travel Insurance is Mandatory in a Country?

With changing guidelines it is easy to miss a detail or two during documentation. If you are facing any doubts regarding buying travel insurance for your trip, here are some helpful tips:

  • Follow news. Latest entry requirements are published on public domains so that travellers can stay up-to-date with important notifications.
  • Confirm with airlines. Flight tickets are the first thing any traveller books before proceeding with hotel, visa and other important travel documents. The airline you’re travelling to the designated country is bound to be aware of any latest requirements and travel mandates.
  • Always go to the official government website of the country you plan to visit. They provide the latest information and have contacts you can reach out to.
  • Reach out to an agent or tour company if you don’t have the time to confirm technicalities. They are well-versed with latest documents and requirements so you can trust them to get your visa and other required documents ready for your trip .
  • Contact the embassy or consulate of the country you’re visiting. This may be a hassle but if you don’t want to use an agent or don’t have anyone to help you, you can take help from their designated officials.
  • Buy travel insurance nevertheless! There is no harm in securing your trip at a fraction of the entire cost. This way, you will save the headache of confirming as well as enjoy the journey without worrying about uncertainties.

FAQ About Travel Insurance from the UK to the US

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, travel insurance is not mandatory for travel to the USA. However, regardless of whether or not it's legally required, it's always a good idea to take our health insurance before you travel to the US. For what's usually an affordable cost, taking out travel insurance will mitigate most or all of the risk of financial damage if you run into any unexpected troubles during your trip abroad.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to visitors worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the insured, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent tourists.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. About Travel Insurance

Planning a holiday is one of the most exciting activities we can undertake, but we all have different ideas about our perfect trip. For some of us a beach holiday in Benidorm is paradise, while others would prefer a trek in Southeast Asia or a mountain climb in Scotland.

Whatever we choose, we should always be cautious about protecting ourselves if something goes wrong, and that’s why travel insurance is so important.

uk travel insurance mandatory

This insurance quote service is powered by Quotezone. The data you supply and submit is collected directly by Quotezone who are responsible for the handling and processing of that data. What will travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance is a premium taken out to cover the traveller in the eventuality of something bad occurring during the holiday. Typical occurrences covered by travel insurance include:

  • Flight/holiday cancellation and curtailment
  • Serious injury/illness
  • Loss of baggage/contents
  • Personal liability (injuring someone else)
  • Emergency assistance

Should I always go for the cheapest policy?

Definitely not, unless it covers you for everything you plan to do on the holiday and all eventualities. Cheaper options can sometimes exclude important details and set high excess levels.

What won’t it cover?

These are not concrete examples and all insurers differ, but some reasons why an insurer might not pay out include:

  • In certain circumstances it will not cover extreme sports or expeditions; don’t book a trek to the top of Mount Everest and expect standard insurance to pay out in the event of a disaster
  • Loss of items or injury through negligence such as alcohol
  • Ignoring FCO (Foreign & Commonwealth Office) advice
  • Full cost of valuables (see below)
  • Failure to report crime within a certain time frame

Is travel insurance mandatory?

For the vast majority of countries travel insurance is not mandatory, although for the cost of a few pounds it makes sense to obtain it. There are many factors, such as flight cancellations, crime, bag thefts and political upheaval in a country that are out of the traveller’s control, but will cost them dearly if they are not insured.

Passport controls in some countries, such as Cuba, will ask for proof of insurance before allowing you to enter. When you apply for a visa for Russia, you could be asked to supply evidence of insurance. The simple rule of thumb is to check well before you reach the airport and put steps in place to cover yourself.

When should I take out travel insurance?

From the moment you book, not the start of the holiday. The cost will probably not be too different, and that extra cost will cover you if you have to cancel before the holiday begins. If you decide to undertake a more spontaneous extreme excursion or activity while on holiday, this could be booked a day or two before.

What affects my travel insurance costs?

There are a huge range of factors, such as:

  • The destination itself
  • Type of holiday – cruise, multi-trip, extreme adventure
  • Your health (see below)
  • Gadgets (see below)
  • Length of travel

How will my health affect costs?

There’s no need to reveal every ailment and pain you suffer, but failure to disclose significant conditions such as heart conditions, cancer or diabetes would be folly simply because your cover could be invalidated in the event of a claim and you could face bills of thousands or tens of thousands of pounds. Even if you have been cured of a particular condition, you might still have to declare it.

Previous injuries, illnesses and conditions could be regarded as denoting a higher risk and the downside is that it might drive up your travel insurance costs. An insurer might even refuse to insure you altogether. Some countries such as the US and Canada have particularly expensive medical care, which could also affect the insurers’ decision.

Will travel insurance cover my gadgets?

It depends – some companies will cover laptops, smartphones, cameras and similar, but only up to a certain cost. Consider paying out an additional premium for individual items.

What should I do if I’m travelling to somewhere that becomes dangerous?

Check your policy documents for details of what your insurer will do in the event of trouble. Aim for a tour operator covered by ATOL (UK Civil Aviation Authority), ABTA or similar representative body.

If something happens a few days before you’re due to leave then your first port of call should be the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which regularly updates travellers on travel advice and the current political/economic/social states of countries that might be affected by unrest or freak, dangerous conditions such as earthquakes.

Travel Insurance FAQs

Which? recommends £2 million of medical cover for Europe and £5 million worldwide, £1,500 of cover for baggage and personal belongings, and £3,000 for cancellation or curtailment.

Don’t travel to Europe without an EHIC – European Health Insurance Card. It’s free and in effect gives you access to state–provided healthcare within EEA countries.

The more claims you’ve made in the past, the more expensive your cover is likely to be.

It is not mandatory to take out travel insurance through the airline or travel agent you’ve booked the holiday with. In fact, shopping around may save you money.

Feel the Fear and Consider Life Insurance Anyway?

Life insurance can stir up difficult feelings that may even be a barrier to getting cover. Understanding why this decision can be emotionally charged might help you to approach it differently.

Life Assurance vs Life Insurance: What’s the Difference?

Life assurance is cover that lasts your whole lifetime, while life insurance usually lasts for a specific period of time. Here’s why that difference matters if you’re thinking of putting that protection in place.

Can You Get Life Insurance with No Medical?

Can You Get Life Insurance with No Medical?

Most people don’t need to have a medical exam to get life insurance. But if the insurer does ask you to have one, it doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be offered cover.

Travel Insurance Mandatory?

Cool Cruiser

Hi all, for my upcoming Princess Cruise I bought it through the UK (in the past I bought through US but I now live in the UK). When filling out the online passenger check-in information just now it says that as part of the UK passenger contract that it is mandatory to have travel insurance.

In the past, I've never been asked for it. Is it really necessary to have? And at the port when you check in to board, has any UK passengers ever been asked for confirmation of their health insurance? My credit card provides some coverage, but not as high/premium a coverage as the passenger contract is asking for.

Is mandatory for UK. We've always used the travel insurance provided by our 'fee paid' current account and underwritten by a major insurer. No problems entering the details on the Cruise Personalizer and never been asked for proof at embarkation. Though I do have a copy downloaded on my iPad.

As we're getting that bit older, have started looking at other options to ensure we're fully covered. You hear all too often about the accident/illness abroad, the cost of treatment and the resulting repatriation issues. Better safe than sorry.

Mandatory or not I would not travel without adequate travel insurance. One accident or illness could cost plenty, including hospital costs, hotel charges for family, plane fares, medical evacuation, emergency at home requiring you and family to leave the ship and fly home and more.

nukesubsailor

If you really don't want to buy travel insurance, check the benefits your credit card provides. Some credit card companies include limited travel insurance to their cardholders. I know the Princess Visa card from Barclays offers travel insurance as a benefit.

FirstCruiseBeth

Agree. We have an annual policy and had to fill in the name of our insurer plus their 24 hour medical assistance number on our cruise personaliser. We have seen a medical evacuation on one of the two cruises we have sailed on previously and I wouldn't like to think how much that, plus getting home once stabilised, would cost.

5,000+ Club

I would never travel without purchasing travel insurance. Last cruise I went to medical center and had a $1800 bill.

Mandatory or not, I strongly suggest you purchase it. In my years of travel, I have heard a few horror stories from folks who didn't buy it and $30,000.00 later, they regretted their decision. If you get sick and need to be airlifted to a decent hospital, will cost major bucks. The insurance is so affordable, so don't crimp there.

It is my understanding that the UK has different laws etc with regards to consumer protections. With that being said, I believe it is mandatory in the UK to have travel insurance. For people in the US, its just a good idea.

20,000+ Club

Won't travel either without a travel insurance. Premium just a small percentage of cruise fare.

Thanks all for the responses. Will definitely be getting travel insurance now.

Agree, don't leave home without it. However, buy 3rd party rather than cruise line. Cruise line only covers what they sell you while 3rd party is "door to door" and often about the same price. Even if it is more, it won't be that much and you will be covered for any arrangements you make like air, hotels, private excursions.

Tiggertastic

It's not mandatory in the uk to have travel insurance but I'd definitely recommend having it. We have an annual worldwide policy inc cruise that covers our pre existing conditions. It's not just about health but having yo cancel for other reasons inc family illness or as we recently had a break up in the family and 1 not coming

GJCruiser

Insure what you cannot afford if it occurs. If a large bill at the medical center or worst case an evacuation would take away your ability to have food and shelter - insure it. But be wary of over - insuring.

It's not mandatory in the UK to have travel insurance but it is a requirement of Princess that UK passengers have it and that they enter the company details on the online cruise documentation. I can't recall ever having seen any stipulation as to the amount of cover though. I can't understand why anyone would go off on a cruise or other vacation to another country without adequate insurance. Repatriation costs can be horrendous.

Kartgv

Probably true UNLESS you're age 70+. All the 3rd party policies we've found factor in age and the older you get the more expensive it gets. Cruise line insurance (at least for Celebrity, Princess, and Oceania) does not factor age into the price - it's strictly a percentage of cruise cost. The down side of the cruise line insurance is that you can't customize your coverage and the amounts usually offered for medical and evacuation are pretty low. We're solving that problem by adding a separate low cost annual policy to cover additional medical and evacuation.

beg3yrs

... Cruise line only covers what they sell you while 3rd party is "door to door" and often about the same price. ...
The cruise line certainly doesn't cover any flights you purchased on your own but Princess insurance does cover you door-to-door medically and also provides some trip delay and baggage benefits.

Sure, I guess you could skip the insurance, but please don't come back & tell us your hardships if something goes wrong & you lose money & a lot of other issues. It's common sense!

As a recent cruise ship nurse I wish insurance was mandatory for everyone. I don't even go over the border to the US without travel insurance. And I've assisted in too many medivacs and medical disembarkations where passengers have no insurance. I might write a book one day

Buy the travel insurance! Last year we were on day 2 of a 12-day British Isles cruise. I crashed my motorized scooter on the gang plank returning to the ship after our shore excursion. I shattered, not fractured, my left hip and fractured my pelvis. I spent 27 days in Irish hospitals as they tried to decide what they wanted to do. It was finally decided to return me to the states on a private air ambulance -- seventy two thousand dollars and travel insurance only paid fifty thousand dollars, the rest was paid from a ******** account our children started and retirement account.

I don't know what we would've done without our travel insurance. Our experience has been a lesson for all of our traveling friends and family to always buy travel insurance.

Last Alaska cruise (14 day back to back) had ambulance remove a passenger at every port, and two in Whittier. One in Whittier didn't make it onboard from land tour.

You are correct. The other poster was correct in that once you get of a certain age, third party is more expensive because of the age/cost factor where cruise line is "one size fits all." If I'm just going to Mexico leaving from a local port, then I'll get cruise line as I have no airfare involved and the rather low medi-vac will cover the expenses for the most part if necessary. But, if I'm going where my airfare is expensive, medi-vac can exceed 50K, or have pre-paid or non-refundable things booked, then the extra cost is worth it. When I had "ankle biters" going with me, some policies covered them for free if they shared a cabin. Cruise line does not.

Like another poster said, you insure what you don't care to lose. Also, I want pre-existing coverage which I can get with no "look back" if I get it within a couple of weeks of deposit.

Lucky TGO

My wife got sick one time on our cruise by the time we got home the total bills were over 10K.
