Humble Beginnings

After early settlers came to the area, an ambitious vision took shape to establish an institution of higher learning that would leave an indelible mark on the western frontier. And on February 28, 1850, the first state university west off the Missouri River opened as the University of Deseret. Classes were held in private homes and tuition was $8 per quarter. In 1884, the university found its permanent home on the east benches of the Salt Lake Valley, and in 1892 it was renamed the University of Utah. This rich history of trailblazing spirit and growth has shaped our institution into the esteemed university it is today.

We respect the sovereign relationship between tribes, states, and the federal government, and we affirm the University of Utah's commitment to a partnership with Native Nations and Urban Indian communities through research, education, and community outreach activities.

The University of Utah was founded on February 28, 1850 as the first state university west of the Missouri River. Because early settlers to the area wanted to establish an institution of higher learning, the General Assembly of the State of Deseret, led by Orson Spencer, chartered the University of Deseret. State funding was limited and the economy was struggling, so the first classes were held in private homes and other make-do spaces, and money for teacher salaries and supplies came from private donations to the school. The roster the opening semester was 25 students, and tuition was $8 for the quarter.

Pack House

The limited funds didn't last long, and in 1853, the university was forced to close. Courses were held intermittently for more than a decade, until state leaders could put greater resources into the school thanks to a rebounding economy. In 1869, John R. Park, a well-known educator in Utah, was hired as the university's first president. Under Park's leadership, the school built a solid foundation in the community.

In 1884, the university moved into its very own building for the first time, located where West High now stands in Salt Lake City (241 N. 300 West). After the move, student life began to develop on campus with the formation of literary and debating societies and the establishment of the annual University Ball. Two years later, the university granted its first degrees and formed the Alumni Association. By 1900 enrollment had grown to 400 students, and B.A. and B.S. degrees were offered in classical, scientific, and normal programs.

U of U Deseret

In 1892, the school was renamed the University of Utah. The Territorial Legislature petitioned Congress for 60 acres for a new campus, which was granted in 1894, landing the university on the east bench of Salt Lake Valley—its permanent home.

We acknowledge that this land, which is named for the Ute Tribe, is the traditional and ancestral homeland of the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute, and Ute Tribes. The University of Utah recognizes and respects the enduring relationship that exists between many Indigenous peoples and their traditional homelands. We respect the sovereign relationship between tribes, states, and the federal government, and we affirm the University of Utah's commitment to a partnership with Native Nations and Urban Indian communities through research, education, and community outreach activities.

At an elevation of 4,330 feet above sea level, the University of Utah is set on the east bench of the Salt Lake Valley. Just beneath the towering Wasatch Mountain Range, campus provides a stunning view of the areas to the west, north, and south. The university is a part of incorporated Salt Lake City, which has a population of about 200,000 people, nestled in the greater Salt Lake Valley with a population of about 1.3 million. In recent years, the region has grown in population, cultural diversity and accolades.

Utah Landscape

Recently named the Best State in America by U.S. News & World Report, Utah is frequently listed by prestigious magazines and news outlets among the “best places to live” due to a variety of factors including recreational options, the business environment, climate, and a low crime rate. And Salt Lake City, the 46th largest metropolitan area in the United States, just came in as the 21st best place for business and careers by Forbes. It was also recently ranked as the nation's second-friendliest city by Travel+Leisure magazine. The international airport is just nine minutes from downtown, and getting around is easy on TRAX, the city's ever-expanding light rail transit system. TRAX lines now connect campus with the airport and all sections of the Salt Lake Valley.

In addition to the diverse assortment of restaurants and bars (with culinary options running the gamut from tapas bars to nouvelle cuisine), there are two beautiful mixed-use shopping/living areas—the Gateway, on the west side of the city, and City Creek, in the heart of downtown. The NBA’s Utah Jazz is a state staple, as are the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees. On our campus you will find the Utah Museum of Fine Arts; the Natural History Museum of Utah; and the state's abortorium, Red Butte Gardens. The U was also the founding force behind the much-acclaimed Utah Symphony and Ballet West, fixtures of the Salt Lake cultural scene.

Utah Slopes

But many Utahns spend much of their time outdoors. Seven world-renowned ski resorts are about 30 minutes away from campus. Utah was home to the Winter Olympics in 2002, and has long been dubbed to have “The Greatest Snow on Earth.” Five national parks with stunning scenery are within a five-hour drive. Forty golf courses are located throughout the valley and nearby mountains. And hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails can be accessed in the foothills east of campus. For a quick getaway, the historic mining and ski town of Park City is only a 30-minute drive from Salt Lake.

Beyond the state, Los Angeles is a 10-hour drive to the southwest, and Las Vegas is just six hours. To the north, Boise is about four and a half hours, while Denver is eight hours to the east.

The University Visit Program (UVP) at the University of Utah is designed to help prospective graduate students travel to the campus. Through the UVP, students can meet with department advisors, professors, current students, and the Associate Dean of Graduate Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. These meetings, interviews, and events are a chance for students to ask questions about the program coursework, research opportunities, assistantships, mentoring, and more. It's an opportunity for the students and the university to determine if the graduate program is a good intellectual, cultural, and professional fit. Making an informed decision about choosing a graduate or professional program is crucial, and the UVP provides a chance for a two-way interview process.

We anticipate that your University Visit Program will include personal attention in the following ways:

  • Interview with faculty in your graduate program of interest with the goal of identifying an appropriate mentor and/or advisor
  • Network with current graduate students in your program of interest to gain an insider’s perspective
  • Meet with the Associate Dean of Graduate Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion who can share information about recruitment and retention initiatives
  • Learn how you can contribute to the increasingly diverse campus community, specifically with underrepresented graduate students

There are a limited number of UVP awards. Applicants will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, the promise of academic success, financial need, and a sustained personal commitment to historically underrepresented communities in the U.S. and in the academy.

Level of Support

The Graduate School Diversity Office is dedicated to collaborating with university departments to administer the University Visit Program and will co-sponsor all or part of the prospective student’s travel-related expenses. Please note, that the Graduate School Diversity Office can cost match airfare and lodging expenses only.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Bring the commitment to historically underrepresented communities in the U.S. and in the academy, and are able to bring diversity into learning, teaching, and/or scholarship.
  • Have applied and been accepted into a University of Utah graduate program (*currently enrolled students are not eligible for funding)
  • Earned a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher

Application Documents

  • Student Application
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Department nomination and commitment form

The UVP is offered on a rolling basis in concert with department recruitment cycles. All application documents must be submitted to:   [email protected]

  • University of Utah students are always admitted to baseball games free of charge—just show your UCard at the gate.
  • For all three games in the Washington series, fans can receive free admission by bringing a food item to donate at Smith's Ballpark. All donations will support the Feed U Food Panty at the University of Utah.
  • Friday's matinee will be a Fry-Day game—the first 50 fans through the gates can claim a voucher for free fries. Visit the marketing table on the concourse behind home plate.
  • Saturday is MUSS Appreciation Night. The first 50 MUSS members into the ballpark will receive a MUSS-Utah Baseball co-branded hat, as well as a hot dog voucher.
  • Also on Saturday, the first 300 fans into the ballpark (whether you're a MUSS member or not) will receive a free Utah-themed koozie.
  • Soda Sunday is back for the series finale—all souvenir sodas will be half price.
  • Utah is coming off of a dominant 27-4 midweek victory over in-state foe Utah Valley on Tuesday. It saw a Pac-12 era program record 30 hits from the Utes' bats, which was also the most by any team in college baseball this season. Kai Roberts and TJ Clarkson each had five hits in the game, one short of tying the program's single-game record for an individual player.
  • The Utes also took two of three on the road at Arizona State last weekend, outscoring the Sun Devils by a combined score of 24-13. It moved the team into fourth place in the Pac-12 standings and was the fourth conference series win of the season, three of which have come on the road.
  • A haul of accolades rolled into Salt Lake City on Monday, headlined by southpaw Bryson Van Sickle claiming D1Baseball.com National Pitcher of the Week. The native of Eagle Mountain, Utah, was lights-out in his Friday start at Arizona State with a "Maddux"—that is, a complete game shutout on less than 100 pitches. Such a feat hadn't happened in the Pac-12 since 2018.
  • Van Sickle needed just 82 pitches to three-hit the Sun Devils in the 10-0 Utah win. He walked nobody, struck out a season-high eight batters and never allowed the leadoff man to reach. ASU also never put a runner in scoring position all night.
  • Utah also swept the Pac-12 Conference weekly awards on Monday; Van Sickle was named Pitcher of the Week and outfielder TJ Clarkson claimed Player of the Week coming off an ASU series in which Clarkson hit .583 with four homers and eight RBI.
  • Clarkson paced the Utah bats all weekend at ASU, slashing .583 / .667 / 1.583. Playing in his home state of Arizona, he homered in all three games including a pair in the rubber game victory.
  • Offensively, the Utes continue to be led by center fielder and Lehi, Utah native Kai Roberts (.375 / .460 / .618), whose batting average ranks second in the Pac-12. It is more than 100 points North of where Roberts finished his junior season in 2023; he also leads the league with 23 stolen bases entering the week. Roberts is fourth in the league with 14 doubles.
  • Roberts follows leadoff man and shortstop Core Jackson in the lineup; the latter is hitting .352 in his first season as a Ute. Jackson (15) trails only Roberts for the most stolen bases in the Pac-12.
  • Approaching the final month of the regular season, Utah remains one of the Pac-12's higher-scoring offenses at 7.5 runs per game, thanks in part to the guidance of assistant coach Todd Guilliams . It ranks second in the conference and continues a steady climb over the last three seasons. The Utes averaged 6.2 runs per game in 2022 and rose to 6.7 runs per game in '23.
  • The pitching staff also has shown continued progress from a year ago. Now with a 4.81 ERA on the season, the Utes rank fifth in the Pac-12, an improvement from a 7.12 tally at the end of the 2023 season.
  • Gary Henderson 's club reached the 20-win mark in their first 28 games, the fastest in recorded program history. Previously, the Utah club known to reach 20 wins the fastest was in 1997; that year the team started 20-12-1.
  • After this weekend's series with the Huskies, Utah will turn its focus to a Tuesday, April 23 game at BYU which is set for a 6 p.m. MT first pitch down in Provo.

There are daily flights between Cedar City Regional (CDC) and Salt Lake City International (SLC) airports. Many people also choose to fly into Harry Reid International (LAS) and make the 2.5-hour drive from Vegas in a rental car.

Ok, not really. Despite the presence of the nation’s tallest inland lighthouse , Cedar City is actually completely landlocked, so this really isn’t an option.

Think Utah’s boring? Here are 102 things to see and do

S ome may think that the Beehive State is boring . That’s OK. The state is full of fun activities and places to go. In fact, in the process of making this list, I had to make a lot of cuts.

And I mean a lot of cuts.

  • Hey, Golden State Warriors, there’s plenty for you and your families to see and do in SLC while you’re here
  • Opinion: Shaq and Barkley think we’re boring. Who cares?

Whether you’re a born-and-raised Utahn or an out-of-state Utah traveler, this list includes well-known places that you’ve most likely explored, but also places that are a little more off the beaten path. In my opinion, there’s a lot to love about Utah.

So without further ado, here are 102 things to do in Utah.

  • Visit the Bonneville Salt Flats in Salt Lake City.
  • Have a beach day on Utah Lake in Utah County.
  • Tour Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Bonus points: Go see the lights while you’re there.
  • Look at the stained glass Roots of Knowledge mural at Utah Valley University in Orem.
  • Shop at the Traverse Mountain outlets (i.e. Thanksgiving Point) in Lehi.
  • Look out at Salt Lake City from Ensign Peak. Get some of Salt Lake City’s iconic Crown Burgers on your way up.
  • Grab a raspberry milkshake over by Bear Lake in Garden City.
  • Visit the Museum of Art at Brigham Young University. Might as well eat at Black Sheep Cafe while you’re there and walk down Provo’s historic Center Street.
  • Go skiing in Park City. Afterward, get some Vessel Kitchen for dinner.
  • Take a fall drive through the Alpine Loop in American Fork.
  • Visit Antelope Canyon near Lake Powell.
  • Drive down to a ghost town like Grafton or Old Irontown.
  • If you find yourself in Lehi, go to the Hutchings Museum Institute. Stop by the Lehi Bakery afterwards. They have square doughnuts.
  • Go swimming in Homestead Crater in Midway. Take a mozzarella making class from Heber Valley Artisan Cheese while you’re there.
  • See antelope and bison on Antelope Island in Davis County (near Layton).
  • Go see where Butch Cassidy grew up in Panguitch.
  • Book tickets for a rodeo in Nephi. You can listen to the Killers album on the way down — the album is about band member Brandon Flower’s childhood in Nephi.
  • Go to the Shakespeare Festival down in Cedar City. Try Centro Woodfired Pizzeria while you’re there and go see the Cedar City Historic Rock Church.
  • Take a walk along the shores of Stansbury Island.
  • Do a walking tour of Salt Lake City. Eat at one of the city’s fantastic restaurants like Valter’s Osteria or Red Iguana or Settebello Pizzeria.
  • Go hiking at Arches. Hint: Delicate Arch in Grand County at sunset is gorgeous.
  • Going to see Gilgal Sculpture Garden in Salt Lake City with the famous Joseph Smith sphinx is a fun activity.
  • Visit the Bryce Wildlife Adventure Museum in Bryce. Check out Hell’s Backbone Grill & Farm (you’ll need a reservation).

University of Idaho murder suspect says cellphone data proves he was out driving at the time of the slayings

The legal team of the suspect accused of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022 has said that cellphone tower data proves he was out driving late at night and miles away when they were killed.

Attorneys for Bryan Kohberger, who was indicted on charges of murder by a grand jury last May, said in a new court filing Wednesday that his alibi was confirmed by the location of his mobile device.

All four victims — Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20 and Ethan Chapin, 20 — were stabbed to death in the early hours of Nov. 13, 2022, at their off-campus residence in Moscow, Idaho.

DNA from a knife sheath  left at the crime scene led investigators to Kohberger, prosecutors said.

Kohberger's legal team has previously argued that he was out driving alone at the time of the killings — but now they have pledged to call an expert witness they say can prove it using cellphone data.

Kohberger, who lived in the town of Pullman, Washington, 9½ miles away from Moscow, was arrested in Pennsylvania in December 2022 and has pleaded not guilty. He was a doctoral student at the Washington State University studying criminal justice and criminology.

Public defender Anne C. Taylor filed legal papers in the county of Latah on Wednesday in response to the state's demand for details on the claimed alibi.

Kohberger's team intends to rely on testimony from cell tower data expert Sy Ray, an experienced military and law enforcement instructor who they say can prove their client was miles away from Moscow at the time of the crime. Ray has testified in many criminal cases, including homicides.

A probable cause affidavit last year argued that security video showed a white Hyundai Elantra was spotted near the scene — investigators said this was driven by Kohberger.

But Wednesday's filing says Kohberger's car cannot be the same one as he didn't travel that far east on the night in question.

"If not disclosed, Mr. Ray’s testimony will also reveal that critical exculpatory evidence, further corroborating Mr. Kohberger’s alibi, was either not preserved or has been withheld," the filing said.

Ray founded ZetX Corp., specializing in cellular geolocation mapping, in Arizona in 2014. LexisNexis  purchased the company in 2021.

ZetX’s Trax mapping software and Ray himself were criticized in a 2022 ruling by District Court Judge Juan Villaseñor in Colorado in a trial about a man accused of stalking an ex-girlfriend. Villaseñor ruled that the Trax-related evidence was inadmissible and based on a “sea of unreliability” after other experts found the technology to be problematic.

“For one, the Court doesn’t find Ray credible,” Villaseñor wrote. “He inflated his credentials, inaccurately claiming to be an engineer — he’s ‘more of an engineer than an engineer’— despite having no qualifications, licenses, or credentials to support that label. As noted, his sole academic degree is an associate’s, and there’s no evidence that it’s related to engineering. Nor is there evidence that Ray’s taken any engineering classes. To be sure, he’s created a booming business and has successfully pitched Trax to several law-enforcement agencies. But a sound business model doesn’t equal an accurate error rate.”

Ray did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

The defense filing said that Kohberger was an avid runner and hiker and that as the school year began this activity decreased and nighttime drives increased — something his attorneys say is proven by cellphone data and photographs he took of the night sky.

Previously , authorities obtained a search warrant for data connected to cellphones around in the area at the time of the killings. Kohberger's did not show up in a search because he had turned it off, investigators say.

However, a separate search warrant issued Dec. 23, 2022, provided Kohberger's cellphone data for the 24 hours before and after the incident, the affidavit said. This showed that he left his home two hours before the killings and then turned his phone off, only to turn it on again afterward, when it was seen traveling from Idaho to Pullman.

Later on, at 9 a.m. on the day of the deaths, Kohberger went from Pullman to an area near the crime scene before returning.

Further analysis of cellphone data found he had been near the students' home on King Road in Moscow at least 12 times in the six months before the killings, the affidavit said .

The deaths rocked the small community of Moscow, with 25,000 residents, and an 11,000-strong student population.
