Steiner's theories resulted in a colourful scene in which no house is straight. Rooms are never rectangular and roofs have sloping lines. These roofs are planted with sedum and collect rainwater, which eventually ends up in a central pond where reeds provide water purification.

Almere is a city in Flevoland , a western province of the Netherlands , which was reclaimed from the sea in the 20th century.

Understand [ edit ]

Almere is the largest city in the Netherlands' youngest province - Flevoland. Like virtually all of Flevoland, it used to be covered by the waters of the Zuiderzee well into the 20th century. Due to its lack of history and old buildings, Almere is sometimes decried as a bland or "artificial" town but it is also one of the fastest growing in the Netherlands with a more youthful population than the Dutch average and more people moving in than out, so there must be something drawing people here. Certainly one aspect is the relative proximity of Amsterdam and the Randstad while housing prices are still notably lower than in the bigger cities. Working from (nearly) a "blank canvas", town planners and architects could put into practice their ideas of an "ideal community" when Flevoland was first settled and there are still some aspects of that apparent to urban planning enthusiasts like Christaller's concept of "central places" placed at the corners of a honeycomb shape. Almere had about 191,000 inhabitants in 2011, which makes it the 7th city of the Netherlands by population and one of Europe's largest cities founded in the 20th century.

By train [ edit ]

Only Sprinter trains stop at all of the stations in Almere. Intercity trains generally only call at Almere Centrum. Consult ns.nl or 9292.nl [dead link] for up-to-date schedules.

By bus [ edit ]

Apart from its bus rapid transit (BRT) system, Almere is also served by transregional bus lines utilizing the same BRT infrastructure. They are distinguished by their three-digit numbers (city bus lines in Almere are only numbered using one or two digits).

Some of the lines stop at Almere Centrum, but some do not. Since December 2017 all the local bus lines have their endpoint at Almere Centrum. Most regional buses also stop at Almere Centrum, but there are some exceptions. They usually, however, stop at some other railway station within Almere or at the bus transfer point Almere t'Oor on the outskirts of Almere.

The bus lines are meant to supplement the railway by offering direct connections between more remote areas without the need to use the congested trains during peak hours. Therefore, for most tourists, it will be much more convenient to stick to using trains. If, however, you indeed want to start or finish your journey in a point not close to a railway station, consult 9292.nl [dead link] for up-to-date information on connections and schedules.

By car [ edit ]

Almere is at the intersection of two motorways - the A6 going through the entire Flevoland, connecting to the Amsterdam -bound A1, and the A27 , which forks southwards, towards Hilversum and Utrecht , from the A6 in Almere.

By plane [ edit ]

Almere is close to the Schiphol Airport , one of the best-connected airports in the world. From the train station directly underneath the airport concourse, you can take a direct train to Almere. There are longstanding plans to turn Lelystad airport into a "reliever" for Schiphol but as of 2021 it is unclear when, if ever, they'll come to fruition.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Almere has six train stations. Almere Poort, Almere Muziekwijk, Almere Centrum, Almere Parkwijk, Almere Buiten, and Almere Oostvaarders. Almere also has an extensive network of freelaying bus routes. On most of these routes, buses run every five minutes from Monday to Friday. In the weekend, early in the morning and in the evening and night. The buses drive less frequently.

The city also features an extensive network of free laying bike paths covering the entire city. Bikes can be rented at the bike shops at the train stations Almere Centrum and Buiten.

Modern architecture [ edit ].

visit almere.nl

Almere is rife with prominent examples of modern architecture from 1970s onwards, and prides itself in its collection thereof. If this is one of your interests, you will surely not be disappointed in Almere.

Your tour of the architectural marvels of Almere would head off to a good start with a visit to those two places, both housed in rather interesting buildings, close to each other and right in the centre of the city:

 • CASLa . Centre for architecture, city construction and landscape of Almere, with exhibitions and various events. The staff will be happy to talk you through Almere's architectural richness, give you an overview of the town centre using a scale model, and will often be able to provide you with maps, guides and publications on architecture in Almere.
 • VVV Almere . The local tourist information office will be happy to suggest walks or tours for you to take, and has maps and electronic guides with pre-programmed architecturally-themed routes to take. They also have state-of-the-art bicycles for rent if you want to explore Almere that way.

Some of the most prominent works of architecture are to be found in the town's new centre ( Stadshart ):

 • De Citadel , Jewel and Smaragd and Angle form a multi-functional centre with shops on the ground level, residential quarters over them and parking and transit hidden undernath
 • De Nieuwe Bibliotheek complements them with a striking building with functions beyond that of a traditional library and more of a true community centre. Next to it is the sprawling city hall, Stadhuis Almere
 • The waterfront of Stadshart is a collection of striking residential buildings: Lakeside , The Wave , Side by side and The City . Next to them, striking De Kunstlinie houses the local theatre ( Schouwburg Almere )

Art and culture [ edit ]

 • Utopolis - the local outlet of the multiplex cinema chain

visit almere.nl

Do [ edit ]

 • Tour Almere the traditional way . The local company Almere Veertje offers many of the traditional tourists treats, including trips by boat, an ultra-cheesy tourist train with a hop-on-hop-off option and guided tours to some of the city's attractions.
 • Walk! - Almere is a very walkable municipality, offering both urban and natural landscapes to explore. There are plenty of organized and pre-planned walks available via VVV Almere [1] [dead link] . Or you can simply grab a map and explore yourself.
 • Football: Almere City FC were promoted in 2023 and now play soccer in Eredivisie, the Dutch top tier. Their home ground Yanmar Stadion (capacity 4500) is 2 km north of town centre.

Buy [ edit ]

In the City Centre - [1] of Almere are branches of all major retailers. Besides, there are also many local and special shops. In Almere Haven you will find Haven Centrum , this is a community center. In Almere Buiten you will find BuitenMere , a community center and DoeMere - [1] a large shopping center that is completely specialised in home and DIY. In Almere Poort are two supermarkets, a pharmacy, a drugstore and a number of small eateries. Besides these, there are many local shops, for instance at the C. van Eesterenplein, Literatuurwijk , Muziekwijk, Parkwijk and De Meenten

Ultimate City Guide to Almere, Netherlands | Surprising Things to Do When Visiting Almere

 • August 14, 2022

I love finding little gems when I’m traveling! The problem is that there are so many places that offer a lot of interesting things to do but don’t pop up on many tourists’ radar just because the main city gets all the love, in this case, Amsterdam. That’s why I’m here! I’ve lived in Amsterdam since 2014 and I love exploring and sharing what’s outside the city just as much as what is inside the city. So this post is for you to help in your research on what you can do in Almere, Netherlands, or if you’re looking for a day trip from Amsterdam.

Woman wearing a polka dot dress drinking white wine while in between grape vines.

Where is Almere?

Almere is in the province of Flevoland, just east of Amsterdam and only a 20-minute direct, non-stop train ride away. Flevoland is part of the new land in the Netherlands and Almere only became a city in 1984! It’s completely different than Amsterdam in that it’s new and planned for today’s kind of living.

It got its start as a place to live for commuters. Where I’m from we’d call it a bedroom community. You simply go back to the town to go to sleep but you’d spend most of your time in the city because that’s where all the things to do are. Nowadays it’s so much more and has a lot of things to do for visitors.

Is Almere worth a day trip from Amsterdam?

You’ll want at least a day in Almere and maybe two or three to soak it all in. You can see our full-day trip on my YouTube channel . It always depends on your style of travel. “It depends” is such an annoying thing to read, isn’t it?

Let me break it down a bit, if you want to quickly enjoy a modern Dutch city, of course, you can do breakfast, lunch, and dinner with some activities thrown in there and head back. But considering the nature, water sports, beaches, and other activities, you might want to stay just to relax and have fun without feeling the pressure to sightsee and you might in Amsterdam.

Sometimes I think the checkbox travelers (they only travel to see specific things) miss the good parts. Travel in a way that works for you, but Almere is for those who want to experience life in an authentic, modern Dutch town.

How to get to Almere

We don’t have a car in Amsterdam, so we take the train. From Amsterdam Central Station or Amsterdam Zuid Station, it’s an easy non-stop 20-minute journey to Almere Stad, the center of the city. For this journey (the short one), you’ll want to take the Intercity train. But, if you don’t mind a few stops along the way or you want to visit the beach instead, you’ll want the Sprinter which takes a bit longer since it has more stops.

If you’re driving, it’s really easy as well since it’s highways between Amsterdam and Almere and parking is readily available throughout Almere. It’s more car-friendly than Amsterdam. Google Maps is very helpful in the Netherlands if you need some guidance.

What to do in Almere

Now we get to the fun stuff! Almere is all about the outdoors and that’s what makes this city so unique, in my opinion. But it has something for everyone like I appreciate the long and wide pedestrian shopping street. Others will flock to the beaches or the parks.

visit almere.nl

Visit one of the beaches

There are no fewer than 7 beaches around Almere…SEVEN! So, don’t you dare forget to pack your swimsuit and a towel. Sean and I went to Almeerderstrand and walked from the Almere Poort train station. If you prefer to cycle, there are bikes you can rent via an app usually parked right outside. This beach is a favorite to host festivals since it’s the biggest one in the city.

visit almere.nl

Tackle some water sports

The list might be shorter as to what you can’t do here in terms of water sports, but because what you can’t do isn’t fun to share, here’s a list of everything you CAN do in Almere:

 • Water skiing
 • Wakeboarding
 • Learn to sail
 • Rent a whisper boat to captain yourself
 • Try Flyboarding
 • Catamaran sailing
 • Kayak or Canoe
 • Rent the BBQ&Fun Donut
 • Lounge at the beach

visit almere.nl

Visit the Almere Forest

Since this is all new land, they built a lot of it to give back to nature…with style and design. You’ll find the highest point in Almere, the Cathedral Woods, and plenty of animals! The Klimpark Fun Forest is here and perfect for anyone who likes to be up in the trees for a different experience. This is a great place for couples and families to enjoy some space and some time together.

Oostvaardersplassen Reserve

This is the largest manmade reserve in the world and perfect for any nature-lovers, especially bird enthusiasts! A big thing to do here would be to cycle through, but you can pop by the Oostvaarders Nature Experience Centre to learn more or to take a guided discovery tour. If you’re lucky, you could see a fox, sea eagle, deer, and horses!

Admire the architecture

I highly recommend taking an architecture tour to learn about the different architects, but also the plan for the city. Almere is designed for modern-day living without sacrificing visual interest. If you’re looking for old traditional architecture, you might want to head to Haarlem or Giethoorn , here, it’s all new and has its own story.

Go shopping!

I’m not sure if locals would even consider this the place to go for shopping but let me explain why it’s a hit for me. On the main shopping street in Almere Stad (walking straight out of the Central Station and you can’t miss it), there’s plenty of space, great shops, big squares, and lots to look at. Plus they have a Five Guys. No, I’m not bitter that Amsterdam doesn’t have one, yet. Why would you ask? It’s not like I’m obsessed with the shakes and fries or anything.

You can always visit the Almere tourism office and their website for more information on planning a trip to Almere. Their office is on the main shopping street and they have more brochure but also local products (I got some local honey!).

Where to stay in Almere

visit almere.nl

We’ve stayed in 3 places in Almere and they are all vastly different from each other. But I would be more than happy to stay in each of them again for different reasons.

Almere Haven Lighthouse

This was the first time we went to Almere , and what an experience! The space is very small and I hope one of you is short or likes to curl up because ½ of the bed is a bit short side. But the views were incredible. We loved it!

visit almere.nl

Leonardo Hotel Almere City Centre

When I stayed here, I got a view of the water and you’re right in the heart of it all. It’s a great place for a morning or evening stroll and super close to the shopping street. Otherwise, it’s simply a nice traditional hotel.

Life Contains Beautiful Things

This was my biggest shock with Almere – there’s a little vineyard just outside the main town. I suggest having a car, e-bike, or patience with Uber to get there, but it’s well worth it! I was the most relaxed I’ve been in YEARS while here. You’ll have a tiny home in the vineyard, outside seating, a pool, and plenty of relaxing spots.

What to do and see in Almere

Going to Almere anytime soon? On this page I’m telling you what to do and see in Almere. Almere is a very new city in the Netherlands , located just 30 minutes from Amsterdam . The city centre of Almere has been voted best city center of the Netherlands in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. In this blog post I’m telling you more about Almere and its top sights and activities.

Almere is a city on a very unique part of the Netherlands. It’s located on Flevoland, which is a province that has only been created recently. In the 1950’s and 60’s the Dutch government started creating land in a part that was then called the Zuiderzee (South Sea). Because of a huge dyke, this sea is now a lake and in 1986 the newest province of the Netherlands ‘Flevoland’ is officially born. The province was mainly created for farmland. But you can also visit the Marker Wadden . With this extra province the government hoped to answer the predicted food shortage. As the population of the Netherlands grew, the demand for food also increased. And as the Netherlands is a small country, there wasn’t much space. The capital city of Flevoland is Lelystad but the biggest city on the island is Almere. Amsterdam kept growing as a city, so Almere was build to meet the housing needs.

visit almere.nl

As the land on which Almere is build was only reclaimed in the 1950’s and 60’s, Almere is the newest city of the Netherlands. The first house in Almere was finished in 1976. It’s very interesting to see such a new city. Almere is completely designed on a drawing board. The designers could consider everything beforehand; like traffic flows and the main facilities. Almere consists of several neighborhoods; you’ll probably visit Almere Centrum which is the city centre with the train station and the majority of the shops. Almere Buiten and Almere Haven are also worth a visit!

Architecture in Almere

visit almere.nl

All the architecture you see in Almere is super new! Everything was build in the last 40 years. You can find some real interesting works of architecture. The library for example is really worth a visit. It’s open to the public so you can just take the escalators up and have a look around. The building itself is designed with straight lines and sharp corners. And the interior design has the opposite, it all has soft and round shapes. Even the stairs have the shape of a wave and all the book stands are curved.

visit almere.nl

The city centre of Almere combines commercial areas with residential areas. There are many houses and apartments located on top of the shops. You wouldn’t even see them if you’re just walking on the street, you might not even see them when you’re looking up. But if you can find yourself a higher point in the city you can look over the houses and their yards. From the library you’ll be able to see a part of it and if you go into warehouse Hudson’s Bay you have great views from the terrace on the top floor (please not that Hudson’s Bay will close soon and it isn’t known yet what will take its place).

Many of the buildings in Almere Centrum are designed by famous architects, most of them are Dutch. The most important architect for Almere is Rem Koolhaas. He didn’t only design some of the buildings, he also thought about the bigger plan. He’s also the brain behind the differences in buildings in Almere. Very often you see several styles of buildings in one street.

Shopping in Almere

visit almere.nl

Almere is a perfect destination for a shopping spree. You’ll find many shops located close together in Almere Centrum. Almere has all the bigger chains like Costes and Zara but also some very nice local independent shops. My favorite is Kaky, an interior shop. They sell all kinds of things for your house, from furniture to tableware. They have many art and design items for your home.

Food in Almere

visit almere.nl

There are quite a few restaurants in Almere. Some of them are franchises like Five Guys, Vapiano and La Cubanita. But there are also some great independent restaurants. My favorites are The Black Cockatoo, Neighbor’s Kitchen, BoatHouse and IJspressi. Click here for my blog with my favorite vegetarian friendly food spots in Almere.

Hotel in Almere

visit almere.nl

Looking for a nice place to stay in Almere? I recommend the Apollo Hotel. Apollo Hotels has several hotels in the North and West of the Netherlands. They have hotels in Amsterdam , Breda and The Hague for example. The Apollo hotel in Almere is located right in the city centre. It’s a 10 minute walk to the train station, and you’re just around the corner from several restaurants and the majority of the shops. The rooms at Apollo Hotel Almere City Centre are very spacious. We even had a lounge area in our room. All the rooms have great views over the city centre of Almere or over the water. There’s free wifi throughout the building, each room has free coffee and tea and the bathrooms have a shower and a bathtub. Inside the hotel you can find the Bierfabriek on the ground floor. This cafe brews its own beer and serves some great pub food. They have several tables with their own beer tab on them, which is great fun if you’re going with a group.

Click here to reserve your room at Apollo Hotel Almere.

In short; Almere is a great destination for a day trip or a weekend get-away. From Almere you’re very close to Amsterdam and Utrecht . Click here for all my travel blogs on Europe.

Netherlands Enhances Ukraine's Air Power with F-16 Jets and €350M Military Assistance in March 2024

Posted: April 21, 2024 | Last updated: April 21, 2024

On a brisk February 12, 2023 afternoon, the quiet expanse over Lake Huron was shattered by the roar of a U.S. F-16 fighter jet as it engaged and shot down an airborne object deemed a flight hazard, marking the third consecutive day of such incidents over North American skies.

The Netherlands is set to boost Kyiv's military capabilities by providing F-16 fighter jets and a significant package of military aid, showing its support for Ukraine in the conflict with Russia.Dutch Defence Minister Kajsa Ollongren, during a visit to Ukraine this week, confirmed the provision of €350 million in bombs, drones, and other military equipment.

The plan includes a commitment to send 18 Dutch F-16s to Romania, where Ukrainian pilots are already undergoing training to master the aircraft, with an additional 24 F-16s earmarked for direct delivery to Ukraine.

The United States and Russia, both engaged in a high-stakes game of brinkmanship in the Middle East, are coming dangerously close to confrontation. Despite the deconfliction protocols meant to prevent such encounters, the two sides have continued to accuse each other of increasing hostilities and putting aviation safety at risk.

In a significant investment in air-to-ground weaponry, the Dutch Cabinet has agreed to spend approximately €150 million on guided bombs specifically designed for the F-16s, which will significantly boost Ukraine's defensive arsenal during the conflict. These precision munitions will be sourced directly from the Dutch defense industry, emphasizing the country's commitment to supporting Ukraine with advanced weaponry.

The Netherlands is dedicating over €200 million to acquire Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR) drones for Ukraine, with Minister Ollongren highlighting their proven effectiveness on the battlefield. These drones will play a crucial role in reconnaissance missions, enhancing the Ukrainian military's situational awareness and operational planning capabilities.
