Aegean Sea Cruises

Blue-white sailing paradise.

SeaCloud_Kreuzfahrten_Griechenland_Sporaden_Skiathos_iStock-484896937

Rebetiko sounds drift out of a taverna; rugged cliffs line fine sandy bathing bays; chalky white chapels shine under a deep blue sky – on the sunny Cyclades and Sporades, this picture-book Greece is a reality.

An exciting contrast to the idyllic island beauties are the lively metropolises of Istanbul and Athens, which are the starting or ending point of our sailing cruises. Our cruise team will be happy to assist you in finding the ideal Aegean cruise for you.

Lindblad mediterranean luxury yacht cruising in full sail on blue waters

Sea Cloud: Lindblad

windjammer cruises greece

The 58-guest Sea Cloud: Lindblad is the historic Marjorie Merriweather Post sailing yacht, chartered by Lindblad Expeditions for select Caribbean and Mediterranean itineraries. Although the ship is enormously elegant, she is also friendly and informal, making for a relaxed time. Interiors are paneled in carved oak, fitted with Italian marble and elegantly furnished with period antiques. Enjoy the grace and class of an extraordinarily luxurious ship while relaxing in the casual atmosphere and informal style of expedition travel.

This version of Sea Cloud’s cabin categories and amenities is for her charter by Lindblad Expeditions . The Sea Cloud also sails with a slightly different deck plan for other itineraries. To see this version of the vessel, visit Sea Cloud .

Sea Cloud: Lindblad Review

AdventureSmith Explorations’ detailed review of the Sea Cloud: Lindblad offers a complete small ship description including deck plans and a photo gallery. An AdventureSmith Explorations crew member has been aboard the Sea Cloud in the Mediterranean. Please read our Sea Cloud review below then contact our experts to compare the Sea Cloud with other small cruise ships , catamarans, expedition ships, tall ships and yachts offering Caribbean small ship cruises , small ship Mediterranean cruises , Greece small ship cruises and Croatia small ship cruises .

Choose Sea Cloud for her history, elegance and extravagant charm. Sailing on a traditional square rig this smartly has not been done since the British Empire, making this ship ideal for travelers looking to experience the past along with the modern comforts of the twenty-first century. Sails are raised by hand by a spirited crew, who scramble up and down the masts to get the rigging done. When the sails are open, she’s just magnificent. She carries 30 sails measuring a total of 32,000 square feet, with a main mast height of 178 feet. For guests willing to participate, the Sea Cloud sometimes offers a unique tour of participating guests’ rooms, so everyone can see and learn the history of the different cabins available. There is truly no other ship like it!

History Aboard Sea Cloud: Lindblad

Built in 1931 by Wall Street businessman E. F. Hutton for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, Sea Cloud embodies true elegance and poise. There is no ship afloat that can compare to her grace, fine service and sheer joy of sailing. The ship has played host to royalty, known service in wartime and sailed the world over. Her exquisite original cabins stand as a testament to Marjorie Merriweather Post’s indulgence in luxury. She loved the best of everything—Carrara marble, golden bath fixtures, polished teak and antique furniture. Today many suites embody that elegance with their large marble baths, fireplaces, overstuffed armchairs and walk-in closets.

Common Areas Aboard Sea Cloud: Lindblad

The top Lido Deck is perfect for watching the orchestration of hand-raising and reefing Sea Cloud’s 30 sails, visiting the bar and listening to lectures and presentations. Marjorie Merriweather Post nicknamed the cushioned semicircle at the stern of the ship the Blue Lagoon, a perfect place to relax while gazing up at the masts and sails. The Monkey Deck, perched above the bridge, is ideal for observing up-close the web of rigging 180 feet overhead. An open bridge policy offers the chance to watch the calm business of navigation and sailing unfold. Ever-ready binoculars are available for scanning the horizon and five brass chevrons fixed at the front of the bridge stands for half-a-year of active military service during WWII. Because Sea Cloud is a truly historic vessel, it is important to note that some passageways are tight and stairwells can be steep. Such original design aspects were made to leave more square footage for cabins and common areas and add to the historic charm of the sailing experience. Wireless internet is available on the Lido Deck for an extra charge, with a laptop available for use on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is a telephone in each private room, with calls billed at an additional charge. The ship’s laundry, available at an additional charge, handles personal laundry and pressing, making it easy to pack light. A doctor is aboard Sea Cloud and available 24 hours a day free of charge.

Dining Aboard Sea Cloud: Lindblad

While Sea Cloud’s dining room and lounge are suitable for black-tie formality, there’s a certain lighthearted delight in enjoying it in casual dress. There’s no assigned seating and no need to dress up. Sea Cloud’s dining room is paneled in warm woods and hung with original oil paintings and located on the Promenade Deck, in Sea Cloud’s former salon, where Marjorie Merriweather Post received her guests.  An array of fresh fruits and delicious fresh juices are key components of the breakfast buffet. Wines from well-known regions are served with lunch and dinner and are included in the expedition price. There are fish or meat choices at every meal and the chefs happily accommodate special diet requests (dietary restrictions should be made known prior to departure). The chefs come from renowned, first-class restaurants and offer fresh, contemporary cuisine inflected with regional flavors and locally sourced ingredients from sustainable providers whenever possible. Coffee, teas, cappuccinos and coffee drinks are available for order.

Swimming from Sea Cloud: Lindblad

Swimming from Sea Cloud is more than an average jump into the sea. Like everything aboard, it is a special event unto itself. Site selection is important, as the captain looks to anchor the ship where it will provide a calm but sunny lee with a spectacular view. Down go the safety lines, to which a dozen or so floating mattresses are strung as a boundary. The gangway is lowered into the water and the hotel manager lifeguard calls out with exuberance, “The pool is open!” The sea fills with smiling, laughing bobble-heads, buoyed up by the clear ocean’s salinity. Guests swim leisurely or lay on a floating mattress, looking up in awe at the towering masts and rigging above.

Cabins & Deck Plan Aboard Sea Cloud: Lindblad

On one of our luxury Greek Island cruises, explore far-flung beaches, drift out to sea on catamarans and kayaks, and duck into tiny tavernas where you can eat and drink like a local. From the sun-soaked stone buildings in Santorini to the white-sand beaches that beckon in Mykonos, a Greece cruise is the best way to experience the captivating Greek Islands.

Greek Island Cruise Highlights

Once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

There is no shortage of unforgettable experiences to be had in Greece. Its seascapes and cityscapes are wondrous, from the mighty ruins of the Acropolis to the buzzing, modern city center of Athens. Visit an olive farm in Crete, or embark on a tour of Mykonos Town’s organic wineries. Or, take an intimate, exclusive cooking lesson on how to make local favorites in Santorini’s main square, right in the middle of it all.

Ancient History

Greece is a world-renowned destination for history buffs. Stroll through the Acropolis and marvel at human achievement, or visit the Museum of Cycladic Art to study Aegean and Cypriot artifacts. Examine the 400-year-old remains of a town buried under volcanic ash outside of Santorini. Explore the historic forts of Corfu, or hop on a boat ride to Delos, said to be the birthplace of Apollo.

Natural Wonders

Discover Elafonisi Beach, a paradise of pink, powdery sand and shallow waters off the island of Crete. Take an unforgettable cruise through the impressive Corinth Canal on a shore excursion in Athens. Stand in awe at the base of Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain and the fabled home of the Greek gods. In Zakynthos, don’t miss a visit to the awe-inspiring Shipwreck Beach, which often tops best-of lists.

Featured Ports

Santorini, Greece

Travelers flock to Santorini for its cobalt-roofed homes, friendly locals, and fine local wine. On this crescent-shaped island, soak up the sun at black-sand beaches like Perissa, or spend a day at the Santorini Caldera, one of the only places in the world to see submerged remnants of an erupted volcano. Sample Greek wines at family-owned wineries dotting the Aegean coast, and take the time to marvel at the incredible panoramas all around you.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is the quintessential Mediterranean beach destination. Choose your favorite to spend the day on, or book a sailing excursion to go beach hopping. Take a day trip beyond Mykonos to the nearby island of Delos, an uninhabited archeological site said to be the birthplace of Greek gods. Experience an authentic side of the island with a home-cooking class, where you’ll sample and prepare delicious local specialties.

Athens, Greece

To visit the capital of Greece is to take a trip back in time, whether you’re exploring the narrow streets of the Plaka District or hiking the Acropolis for well-earned views of the Parthenon. After a day of exploration, pop into a taverna for Mediterranean meze and a cold beer.

ISLAND WINDJAMMERS

Island Windjammers

Remember Windjammer Barefoot Cruises? Enormously popular in the ‘80s and ‘90s for its ultra-casual, rum-fueled Caribbean sailing adventures, the line folded in 2008, leaving thousands of loyal passengers sad and landlocked. Enter Island Windjammers.

Launched in 2009 by and for Windjammer Barefoot regulars when they got together to buy the 101-foot brigantine schooner Diamant , the line is a more mature version of its barefoot predecessor, operating truly intimate sailing adventures that tootle around the quieter corners of the Caribbean, far from the megaship mega-crowds.

Sure, there’s still plenty of rum punch and Red Stripes consumed, but the volume of the party has been turned way down to just the perfect level. (Island Windjammers is not to be confused with Sail Windjammer, a now defunct one-ship line that used to operate the 72-pax Mandalay , formerly of the Windjammer Barefoot Cruises fleet.)

Diamant (built 1978 & 10 passengers) – Windward Islands, Caribbean

Vela (b. 1988 & 26 p) – British Virgin Islands, French West Indies & Leeward Islands, Caribbean

Note: the 24-passenger 1960-built Sagitta is no longer a part of the Island Windjammers fleet.

Island Windjammers has started offering yacht charters in Europe; they did Croatia in 2023 and in 2024, it’s the Greek Isles aboard the 8-pax Lyra doing 10-night itineraries. More info HERE.

Island Windjammers Passenger Profile

Young-at-heart mostly American couples, singles and groups of friends 45+ who crave a carefree Caribbean getaway with zero pretension.

Summers and holiday weeks see occasional families with children; though the minimum age is 8 and it’s probably better for kids to be at least 10 or 12+.

Note : Island Windjammer’s ships are not accessible for people with restricted mobility, as staircases are steep, doorways narrow and door sills high.

To let your hair down, work on your tan and hang out with like-minded others who operate on island time.

When to Go?

All year around, though remember hurricane season in the Caribbean is officially June through November.

Activities & Entertainment

The day starts with the captain’s story time when he explains what’s happening for the day; the ships spend part of every day in port somewhere. The pace is easy going and free — while away the day swimming off the side of the ship (when conditions permit), take the ships’ kayaks for a spin nearby, try paddle boarding, or sip rum punch with new friends in an inflatable “floating island.”

There are a handful of shore excursions offered on most itineraries, but many passengers are content to find a good beach or wander around on their own. Sometimes lunch is served on a quiet beach somewhere, otherwise meals on are on board.

Occasionally passengers will arrange their own diving trips, and spend part of a day deep down under looking at the colorful fishies.

Happy hour is a big thing and drinks on deck are a favored pastime for many; you’re free to bring aboard your favorite spirits or mixers, though why bother when beer, wine, rum punch and soft drinks are on the house.

Evenings, the crew may start a bonfire on a nearby beach or organize a pub-crawl.

Theme cruises from time to time focus on rum (with a rum expert on board to educate and do tastings), solo cruisers (no kids or couples allowed!), pirates (with costume contests, pirate trivia and visits to spots where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed), local food tasting, and yoga. Om shanti! 🙏🏼

Island Windjammers

Swing from the rigging, yipeee! * Photo: Island Windjammers

Meals are served at one very social open seating at a few tables, with local dishes to the tune of chicken roti, conch soup, pumpkin soup, callaloo and fresh fish as well as continental standards the likes of cheeseburgers and salads.

Fresh island fruits are part of the picture, from passion fruit to guava, star fruit, sour oranges and bananas.

Vegetarian and Gluten Free diets are catered for but not Kosher nor Vegan.

The whole point of an Island Windjammer cruise is to be outside on deck soaking up the sun and fresh Caribbean air, and enjoying the sailing ship experience and the quirkiness of the vessels — each has a very interesting background. — Heidi Sarna

The 10-passenger Diamant was built in 1978 in Taiwan and then later spent two decades sailing in the Galapagos Islands before Island Windjammers purchased her in 2009. She’s been the fleet favorite ever since.

She got a facelift in fall 2016 that reduced her capacity to 10 passengers in five cabins and created an overall spiffier look (“sophisticated not stuffy” the line’s website points out).

Of the two passenger decks, the top deck has both covered and open-air dining tables, plus a bar and deck chairs. The cabins are on the lower deck; there’s no elevator

Diamant sports four cabins with double beds below and single bunk above, and with full bathrooms with separate showers; and a fifth cabin is a suite with a queen bed, sitting area and a full bathroom.

Small as you’d expect on sailing ships, but charming, wood-paneled and the perfect cozy nests to catch up your beauty rest; otherwise, life is lived up on deck or on shore.

All cabins have 110v outlets, blow dryers, shampoo/soap, portholes and private bathrooms with separate shower stall.

A cozy and very nautical Diamant cabin. * Photo: Island Windjammers

The 26-passenger Vela was built in 1988 in Puget Sound, Washington, and deployed in the Marshall Islands as a floating medical clinic called Tole Mour , or “Gift of Life and Health.” Later she was used as an education vessel for students studying sailing, oceanography and marine biology.

In late 2014, Island Windjammers purchased the ship and rechristened her Vela , and a year later did major renovations, replacing the dormitory-style cabins with en suite single and double cabins; there’s also a new pilot house, large enclosed bar and dining saloon on the top deck.

Vela ’ s cabins include two tiny Cadet Cabins with raised small double beds (for one or two people) each with a private all-in-one bathroom (no separate shower stall).

There are a pair of Solo Cabins, one with a porthole and one without, that share one bathroom with a separate shower stall (each cabin can accommodate one or two people).

The two Standard Cabins are a bit larger with a double lower bed and a single bunk above, while six Deluxe Cabins have a larger double bed with single bunk above.

A pair of Compass Cabins at the aft of the ship has a queen size bed (and no upper bunk) and the one and only Topsail Cabin has a queen bed and larger bathroom.

Finally, the relatively spacious Owner’s Suite has a king size bed, mini-fridges, and a large bathroom — both cabin and bathroom have portholes.

All cabins have 110v outlets, blow dryers, shampoo/soap, portholes, and all but two solo rooms, cabins have private bathrooms with showers.

Along the Same Lines

Star Clippers is in the ballpark, though its passengers are more international and its ships are much larger, and the overall experience is more high-end. The Maine Windjammers — one of which is reviewed on QuirkyCruise.com, the J&E Riggin — have a similar vibe, though the Island Windjammers’ ships offer more of a “cruise” experience with more amenities.

Your crew will assist you with arranging post-cruise airport or hotel transfers.

BOARDING TIME

Any changes in boarding information will be included with your final boarding instructions.

SUNSHINY DAYS

How’s the weather.

The weather is wonderful. Year round temperatures are typically in the mid 80’s, with fresh breezes during the day, and mid 70’s at night. Occasional rain showers are typical, but then the sun shines more brightly afterwards, as if to apologize!

WILL I GET SEASICK?

If you've experienced motion sickness in the past, or aren't sure how you'll adjust, please bring your preferred remedy with you. Most motion sickness medications aren't effective if taken after you start feeling sick. Play it safe if you're not sure, and take your medication before you set sail!

MONEY MATTERS

Do i need local currency.

NO CASH is accepted on board the ship.

The US dollar is accepted in most Caribbean ports. The Euro is accepted in the Greek Isles and most French Caribbean ports. Small denominations are best.

Visa and MasterCard may be used in most shops and restaurants. Avoid fraud alerts and pesky holds on your credit card by notifying the issuing bank of your intended foreign travel.

TIPS ABOUT TIPPING

Suggested amounts:

Six-night sailings: $250 per person, per week

Ten-night sailings (Lyra): $600 per person

Twelve-night sailings: $500 per person

Gratuities are payable ONLY by credit card at the end of your cruise. No cash is accepted onboard.

STAYING CONNECTED… OR NOT

Will i get cell phone coverage.

Most cell phone carriers provide international roaming service on Caribbean networks. Call your provider to ensure you have coverage, and ask about cost-saving international service plans.

DO THE SHIPS HAVE WIFI?

The ships do not have WIFI. There are Internet cafés on some of the islands.

SIPS ON THE SHIP

Is there a bar on board.

You may help yourself to the included beverages at any time. You're welcome to bring your own spirits on board to mix your favorite drinks. Pick it up at the duty free on your way down, or at a local market before you board.

DO YOU PROVIDE MIXERS?

Depending upon availability, we provide Cola, Diet Cola, Sprite, Ginger Ale and Tonic Water.

MUSIC TO YOUR EARS… AND OURS TOO

Can you play the kazoo? Have you mastered the art of strumming the guitar on your front porch swing? If you’re wildly entertaining, or mildly talented, bring your instrument along for the ride. Some guests enjoy center stage, while others just like to watch.

While we’re on the subject, bring your playlist, and take your turn at the dock. See what we did there? He-he.

DO YOU OFFER TOURS?

Greek Isles Your crew will explain the wonders of each island prior to your arrival, and may be able to assist if you wish to plan a special activity.

Windwards and Turks & Caicos These islands are small, beautiful, and far from the crowds. Island tours in some ports of call can be arranged with local taxi drivers, or your crew. The main activities are swimming, snorkeling, strolling around local villages, and....relaxing!

The British Virgins | Leewards | French West Indies These Islands are larger, more populated, and have a wide variety of activities and things to do. The Operations Manager will review things to do on your own, as well as a variety of optional extra excursions (not included in your cruise fare).

OF BEACH DAYS AND BEACH SIPS Please do not bring beverages ashore from the ship, as local vendors earn their livelihood selling drinks and renting chairs in some ports of call. When permissible, the crew will bring a beverage cooler to the beach for your enjoyment.

HOW ABOUT SNORKELING AND SCUBA? Snorkel gear is available onboard at no cost. If you are interested in scuba diving, research diving opportunities prior to sailing, and make arrangements while on board.

LOOK SUNSATIONAL The sun can be your best friend and give you a big dose of vitamin D — or your worst enemy. We strongly suggest using a high SPF sunscreen, and applying it often. We want you to look like you’ve been frolicking in paradise, not bathing in a cauldron of hot water. While we’re on the subject of encouraging… avoid insect bites by using insect repellent anytime you are outside. Apply after sunscreen.

THE ESSENTIALS

Island style.

Dress on board is casual. Ladies and gents planning to dine ashore may want to pack a sundress or a pair of trousers. Bath towels are provided, as are hair dryers, shampoo, and body wash.

Cabins have A/C and 110V electric outlets. There are 220V electric outlets aboard Lyra. CPAP machines are okay to bring if you require one. Pack light. Cabin storage space is limited. Did we say pack light? Why yes, yes we did.

7 Things to Know Before Booking a Windjammer Cruise

maine-windjammer-cruises

Windjammer Cruises

We’re not doing any traveling this summer but all the time indoors has gotten me in a reflective mood. One of the most memorable summer vacations we took was a sailing trip along the coast of Maine .

It was two summers ago, and we spent about a week on a traditional windjammer, letting the wind dictate our search for lobsters and lighthouses.

The sailing was incredible and the food was even better. In fact, I’ve made several recipes from the Chef’s cookbook during quarantine!

Our week at sea on a small schooner was one of the most unique trips I’ve done.

Before we set sail, I barely did any research (unlike me, I know). But having been on so many cruises at this point, I figured sailing aboard a windjammer would be similar.

Boy was I in for a surprise!

Keep reading, or pin this post to read later ⇟

Maine Windjammer Cruises

Schooner vacations are all about community, serenity, and simple enjoyment.

They’re completely different cruising experiences so in today’s post, we’re covering everything you should know before setting sail on a Maine windjammer cruise!

1. What Are Windjammers, Anyway?

windjammer-cruise

Although “windjammer” could easily pass as a slang term used only by serious boaters, the word has a technical meaning that belies its casual first impression.

Generally, “windjammer” was the moniker bestowed on sailing cargo ships that were heavily utilized until steamships became economically viable in the early 20th century.

Distinguished by multiple masts, billowing sails, and restored finishes, Maine windjammers – with the exception of auxiliary-powered yawl boats that guide the windjammers to and from the harbor – rely on wind and wind alone to navigate the open seas.

Most surviving windjammers are schooners, which are defined by the presence of multiple masts, the aft-most (furthest rear) of which is the tallest.

Originally built between 1870 and 1985, the current members of the Maine windjammer fleet lie between 60 and 100 feet (with some exceptions) and can support between 15 and 40 guests per cruise.

2. How Long Are Maine Windjammer Cruises?

maine-sailing-cruise

The most common Maine schooner tours last 3, 4, or 6 days .

The first “day” begins in the late afternoon and typically involves dropping off your belongings, attending a brief on-deck introductory meeting, and spending the night in the harbor.

The final “day” normally begins with eating breakfast at sea, continues with exchanging contact information among your new friends, and ends with docking the windjammer in the harbor by lunchtime.

While 3, 4, or 6 day cruises are the most widely available, there are certain schooners that also offer cruises lasting 2, 5, 7, and 11 days .

3. How Much Does a Maine Windjammer Cruise Cost?

maine-windjammer-cruise-cost

The cost of Maine windjammer cruise tickets depends on the schooner, cruise theme (many schooners structure their cruises around any holidays or local festivals taking place), and trip length.

But, since we got a couple questions about how much windjammer cruise vacations cost, we thought we’d cover this.

There’s a number of different schooners that you can choose in the Maine area. They all vary slightly in price, depending on the itinerary they offer and when you’re looking to sail with them. But to give you an idea, here’s what to expect:

If you’re on a budget – good news!

Many schooners offer an “early bird” promotion that discounts the ticket price (usually by 5%) if you book early, usually by February 1 or March 1.

Like with most cruises, you pay an initial deposit to secure your spot and then pay the remaining balance 6-8 weeks before setting sail.

Cancellations made before the final payment due date typically incur a handling charge, while those made after submitting the final payment will incur a handling charge and only yield a refund if the cancelled tickets are re-sold.

Finally, the ticket price usually covers everything except:

  • dinner on the first “day”
  • $20 cash fee to use Harbor parking lot
  • alcohol (unless explicitly provided as part of cruise theme)
  • discretionary gratuity for crew

If you’ve been cruising before, you’re probably familiar with most of these policies. BUT there was one big difference when it came to sailing on a windjammer.

You don’t pick your cabin (at least not on the schooner we were on).

The captain plans the cabin layout after all the bookings have been made (you can certainly request a specific bunk). I think this is because schooners and long and narrow, and the crew want to make sure weight is evenly distributed, although I’m not certain.

4. How Big Are the Cabins?

windjammer-cruises-maine

We sailed on the schooner J.&E. Riggin , a boat with quite an interesting history!

It was originally constructed in 1927 as a New Jersey oyster schooner, converted for passenger sailing in 1977, and then designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1991.

When we sailed, it was owned by Captains (and husband-and-wife duo extraordinaire ) Jon Finger and Anne Mahle but as of 2020, they’ve sold the J&E Riggin to new ownership.

Though our perspective on cabins, activities, and food will be Riggin-specific, our sense (from surveying other schooners both at the harbor and anchored on the open sea) is that the cabins are more alike than different among the various schooners.

And when I say the cabins are more alike than different, what I mean is they are all extremely small.

Most cabins feature bunked or overlapping beds, a small sink, a few towel hooks, and some helpful (if minimal) shelf space.

The bedding on the Riggin was clean and surprisingly comfortable, which helped dull any inconvenience caused by the close quarters.

To successfully manage cabin expectations, consider the cruise tantamount to a backpacking trip.

maine-sailing-trip

From an activities perspective (more on that later), the sailing vacations Maine offers and traditional backpacking trips are very similar.

And while the Riggin cabins are not (nor are they intended to be) luxury accommodations, their clean bedding, private doors, and manageable space compare favorably to the conditions found in a pitched tent on the backpacking trail.

Even if camping or the outdoors aren’t your favorite things (full disclosure, they aren’t mine), sailing with the Riggin can be an amazingly unique experience.

With that said, if you would never consider using vacation (or any) time for a backpacking trip, then think carefully about whether Maine windjammer cruises are right for you!

5. What Do You Do on a Maine Windjammer Cruise?

maine-lobster-bake

As previously mentioned, each cruise has a theme that heavily informs the itinerary.

For example, I attended the 4-day Lighthouses & Lobster cruise which, somewhat expectedly, focused primarily on sailing routes that maximized lighthouse sightings and eating some damn good lobster.

During the day, we sailed routes through Penobscot Bay and its litany of lighthouses, expensive homes, and gorgeous pine.

Aside from eating Annie’s delicious food (again, more on that later!), the guests often use this time simply but enjoyably.

Reading, relaxing, playing games, singing music, enjoying a cold one, and getting to know one another are just a few examples of how time is well spent after raising the sails and setting course (yes, you get to learn and help with this part of sailing as well!).

maine-camping

Nights were spent anchored somewhere conducive to swimming, paddle boarding, row boating, or sailing on the Iolaire , an adorable baby schooner that travels with the Riggin .

The highlight was definitely the first night, when we ferried to nearby Warren Island State Park for a traditional lobster bake.

Have you ever done a lobster bake? Picture soft-shell lobsters and corn on the cob heaped into a bucket over an open fire, while piles of fresh seaweed form a “lid” to steam the food.

Besides yielding great photo opportunities, the lobster bake was simply great fun and incredibly delicious. We also had fire cooked paella and roasted S’mores added to complete the feast!

6. What Type of Traveler Would Love a Maine Windjammer Cruise?

j&e-riggin-review

As previously hinted, travelers who enjoy the great outdoors and don’t mind “roughing it” are perfectly suited for the sailing vacations New England has to offer.

Enjoying great food (I promise, I’m almost there!) and savoring the breathtaking views of water, pine, and sails were the undisputed highlights of my journey.

If life’s simple joys like these are your cup of tea, then I’d say you have a great vacation brewing ahead of you!

7. How is the Food?

maine-windjammer-day-cruises

Simply put, I could sail on every schooner throughout the Eastern seaboard and not enjoy food as delicious as that served by Captain Annie.

A restaurant-trained chef who has published 3 cookbooks and often writes about food on her blog, Chef Annie takes a wood-burning stove, fixed water supply, and no electricity and from these ingredients whips up magical feasts.

Samples from our delicious menu included fluffy pancakes (including a vanilla-bourbon cream with which I was absolutely obsessed), freshly-rolled Stromboli, baked Scottish salmon, and braised prime rib.

Many of the side and main dishes incorporated locally harvested ingredients, and this authenticity – combined with Chef Annie’s infectious passion for food – made for a revolving door of unforgettable meals.

Plus, there was always plenty of food for seconds or even thirds! We left with a copy of Annie’s At Home, At Sea cookbook to try to replicate even a fraction of her incredible cooking skills.

Well, that’s it! Hopefully you learned a little more about Maine windjammer cruises, and, if you still have any questions, ask us in the comments!
