Hay Day: Sanctuary; Where is it, how do you get it and what does it do?

When it comes to the long game, Hay Day has a lot to offer to players who have been around for a long time. Often, you might get curious about what is coming next or you might see something on someone else's farm and wonder what it is.

How to unlock the Sanctuary in Hay Day

Then, getting to the town is easy. Once in the town, you will need to get your reputation up. You will do this by gaining reputation points, from filling orders from town visitors. These visitors can be found in the service buildings they want to visit. You can earn more points per visitor through upgrading service buildings, however, you only need to get to level 3 to unlock the Sanctuary.

What does Hay Day Sanctuary let you do?

These puzzle pieces can be found in mystery boxes, special events, derbies, or through completing boats that are marked with a puzzle piece. If you find a puzzle piece, it will go directly to the logbook to be displayed. These puzzles do have a sequence to them - the first animal of each type must be unlocked before a puzzle piece is given for the second animal of that type. Baby animals are unlocked after their adult versions are too.

Town visitors will want to see specific animals at the end of their stay at a player’s town - if they get to see the animal they are looking for, they will leave an extra gift next to the book stand. These gifts can be coins, vouchers, supplies or diamonds. You can end up getting a lot of extra XP and gifts if you get your sanctuary up and running quickly.

Hay Day Guide: How to Collect Puzzle Pieces for Wildlife Sanctuary Animals

Hay Day ‘s latest update, which includes the Wildlife Sanctuary, adds even more animals to your menagerie. But there’s a catch: You have to collect their puzzle pieces to unlock them.

Unlike the other animals you tend to in Hay Day , those in the Wildlife Sanctuary are wild animals and cannot be bought. The hunt is on for puzzle pieces, but they are certainly hard to find. They aren’t given out often and you can only get them in certain ways…which we’ll go over soon enough.

But first let’s go over which animals you can get in this latest update and why you want them. 36 puzzle pieces is a lot to collect for just one animal — but for completionists and anyone looking for extra EXP, they are worth it.

Unlockable Wildlife Sanctuary Animals in  Hay Day

There are only three unique types of animals available for the Wildlife Sanctuary at the time of writing, all three of which come with two color variations. And each one also unlocks two decorations to spruce things up a bit.

Each animal needs a particular housing to be present in the Sanctuary. Hippos need the Hippo House, elephants need the Elephant House, and giraffes need the Giraffe House.

What do you get after you’ve gone through all the trouble to collect their puzzle pieces and build their homes? 25 EXP each every 10 hours , provided you check on them. That’s not too shabby!

How to Get Puzzle Pieces in  Hay Day

There are more ways to get puzzle pieces than you might expect! They’re definitely hard to come by, as the game seems to be exceedingly stingy with them — but if you keep busy, you’re bound to start racking them up.

As a note, you do have to open the Sanctuary before you can start collecting puzzle pieces . You must have land touching the Sanctuary and you need to repair the book stand next to it to open it up. It costs 10,000 coins and 4 hours to repair the book stand.

Once you’ve opened your Sanctuary, here’s how you get puzzle pieces to populated it with animals. 

Derby Rewards

Occasionally puzzle pieces come up as derby rewards. If you haven’t gotten involved in your neighborhood derby, it’s about time. They can also be obtained by solo players at the derby.

Red Tool Boxes

These pop up around your farm from time to time, sometimes locked and sometimes unlocked. Either can have puzzle pieces. If you’re set on getting the new Wildlife Sanctuary animals, you should be opening these when you have the chance.

Treasure Chests

These appear in the town lake every so often and sometimes require 5 diamonds to open. They do contain puzzle pieces on occasion, so keep an eye out.

Boat Rewards

As if you really needed more reasons to do boat shipments, now there’s a chance of getting puzzle pieces as a reward. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it if you’re trying to collect wild animals. Do note you can only get them from fulfilling your own boats’ requests and not another player’s.

Wheel of Fortune 

As with every other item on the wheel, getting a puzzle piece here is a game of chance. But that’s not so different from the other ways you get puzzle pieces, either.

There are some players claiming puzzle pieces can also be obtained via level thresholds now , but I can’t back that up — it’s something to keep in mind, though.

The basic gist of gaining puzzle pieces seems to be “play the game normally, but also spend diamonds on chests sometimes”. It’s not easy to get them and it takes time to get a whole animal’s 36 puzzle pieces, but it’s the easy EXP from the animals in the long run that makes it worth the effort.

Visitors  are non-player characters (NPCs) who visit the player's farm to ask for products in exchange for coins and experience points.

They are unlocked at experience level 2.

There are five different visitors (townsfolk in the game story): Greg, Joan, Mary, Mike and Tilly [1] .

The first one who visits the farm is Mike, who owns a mill and also request orders through the farm order board . Greg is also a special customer as he is the player's first friend , and at level 25, he offers his services as a lumberjack.

Each visitor always says either of the following sentences when requesting an item:

Requests and rewards

Visitors always ask for a single type of crop or product the player can grow or craft at their level. They will never ask for expansion or upgrade items (although they may ask for land-clearing or mining tools), ore, metal bars, jewelry or animal feed. If the player has the item in stock they will ask for about a third or half of what the player has. For example, at level 2, they may ask for 25 units of wheat if a player has 50 units in stock.

Selling them what they asked for always gives the player five experience points, no matter the item. The number of coins they give is typically 1.7 to 2.2 times the base sale price, which is less than the 3.6 times the base price that a player would earn by selling the items at their maximum value in their roadside shop . During a "visitor bonus" event , visitors pay double their usual prices, and for most items it will even exceed the highest sale price possible through the roadside shop.

There can never be more than two visitors at the same time.

Accepting or denying requests

When the player taps on an NPC, this triggers a dialog box where the character introduces themselves than ask for an item.

The player has 3 answers to choose from:

Yes, here you go  - The player gives the goods to the visitor, who then gives the player money and 5 experience points and leaves after a short  happy animation.

No, sorry  - The visitor leaves without playing an animation. This does not have any effect on how often they come or the price they pay.

Wait a moment  - The dialog disappears and the visitor waits at the farm until the player chooses one of the 2 previous answers. The visitor can wait forever, however, only two can be on the farm at any one time.

Strategy tips

• Visitors will usually ask for things you don't have at all, or things you have a lot of. That holds true for items in barn and items in your silo.  So if you want them to come for your tons of easily produced wheat, make sure you have at least one raspberry, one blackberry, one milk, one bread and so on. Then they are more likely to come for your wheat. If you have 16 bread in your barn, they are likely to ask for it. Sell 10 of those through your roadside shop and they will most likely stop asking for it.
• If you have 700 wheat in your silo, they can easily come for 350 of it and pay 980 coin for it. Sold in a single tap. That's a lot more coin and a lot less work than selling 35 stacks of 10 wheat for 350 coins in your roadside shop.
• The visitors will consistently pay 28 coins for each 10 units of wheat.
• The visitors will consistently pay 28 coins for each 10 units of corn as well.

• During Winter, Mike and Tilly wear Santa hats, Greg a scarf, Joan a hood, and Mary a bow on her usual hat and a heavy winter coat.
