The Ultimate Belize Itinerary (7 Days in Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and Hopkins, Belize)

voyage bergeron belize

With both pristine beaches and lush jungle terrains; fascinating history and UNESCO World Heritage sites; incredible food and friendly people; there is little left to be desired out of a tropical destination like that of Belize. See the best of what the country has to offer with this ultimate Belize itinerary. 7 days is just enough time to show you the country’s highlights from the islands to the rain forest and everything in between. Perfect for first-timers, this Belize travel guide will help you experience the best in as little as one week.

Belize Itinerary – 7 Days

The small Central American country  of Belize is nestled in between Mexico and Guatemala, but has a distinct Caribbean feel compared to its Latin surroundings. Home to the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, and the famous sinkhole in the middle of the ocean known as the “Great Blue Hole,” Belize attracts scuba/marine enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and both backpackers and luxury travelers on their quests for adventure and paradise. Your trip to Belize will take you by surprise, and may just end up as one of your favorite travel destinations. Get ready to fall in love with the beauty and wonder of Belize.

belize itinerary 7 days

Day 1 – San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

Begin your 7 day Belize itinerary by flying into Belize City then taking the fifteen-minute flight (or hour and a half water taxi for half the price) to the largest island, Ambergris Caye and its only city of San Pedro. This is the most developed of Belize islands where several luxury resorts can be found, as well as a good amount to do when compared to other Belize cayes. On day 1, rent a golf cart and explore the island. Golf carts will be your best mode of transportation during your time in Belize and are a fun way to get around. The following are some things you shouldn’t miss when on this island.

top things to do in San Pedro belize

Top Things to do in San Pedro, Belize:

Visit Secret Beach: This popular and not-so-secret-anymore beach is a beautiful place to spend the day relaxing in the pristine Caribbean waters. At Secret Beach you will find in-the-water tables so you can sip icy cold drinks without ever leaving the ocean. Several bars and restaurants can also be found in the area, making it a perfect place to stay all afternoon.

Play the Chicken Drop: This hilarious tourist attraction occurs every Thursday night at the beach bar Wahoo’s , where a seemingly happy and well-fed live chicken essentially plays bingo on a giant board, and whoever’s number the chicken poops on wins money.

things to do in san pedro belize.jpg

Hang out at The Truck Stop: Another fun bar on Ambergris Caye, The Truck Stop is a lively shipping container-concept venue with several dining options and a beer garden. Take your pick of pizza, noodles, tacos, and ice cream while enjoying live music, playing games, or taking a dip in the swimming pool around the back. Family-friendly activities can be found every night of the week, in addition to outdoor movie screenings and various other themed nights.

Have a drink or lunch at Palapa Bar: Palapa Bar will make you feel as though you’ve been transported to Tahiti with its overwater bungalow setting. There are actually several bars and restaurants over the water on this strip of sand so you can have your pick. Another personal favorite of mine is Hurricanes , whose food (especially the ceviche) is loved by both locals and tourists alike.

The Best San Pedro Belize Restaurants for Local Food:

When you’re in Belize, you’re going to want to eat local because of how delicious the cuisine is. Belize is strictly against importing produce, so everything is fresh and seasonal. In Belize you will find a mix of Latin, Caribbean, and traditional Belizean cuisine, and the freshest seafood you can find anywhere. Come hungry and leave satisfied because dining in Belize is worth the travel on its own.

Estel’s Dine by the Sea :  Some of the best breakfast on the island (served all day.) Be sure to try the famous Belize specialty: fry jacks, which are kind of like a breakfast burritos but better. Fry Jacks are essentially fried dough stuffed with eggs, beans, cheese, and/or meats. Once you have one, you’ll be craving them all week long!

Wild Mango’s : For ceviche-lovers like myself, this restaurant is the best in town. At Wild Mango’s you will find several different types and styles of ceviche and other great seafood specialties.

best San Pedro belize restaurants

El Fogon:  Great for lunch, this casual eatery serves local Belizean comfort foods cooked over firewood. They feature authentic dishes such as escabeche and whole fried fish.

Elvis Kitchen : A great traditional restaurant all around, but are especially known for their Maya Buffet served every Friday night.

Where to Stay on Ambergris Caye:

My recommendation for hotels in San Pedro is the Mahogany Bay Village Resort and Beach Club . This hotel is owned by Hilton and is among the top luxury resorts such as  Victoria House  and  Las Terrazzas  in San Pedro. The reason I recommend this hotel over the others is because it is the only resort with a completely private beach, and is one the top 10 nicest beaches I’ve been to in the world (and I’ve been to a lot!) Access to this beach makes staying at Mahogany Bay Village completely worth it in my opinion. The private beach is not located on the resort itself, but rather a short boat ride away to a private section of the island and is open to hotel guests only. On the beach there are over water day beds, a restaurant, and a bar. The water is shallow, calm, and as clear as can be. This beach was one of my favorite thing about Ambergris Caye.

Day 2 – Diving and Snorkeling Belize

If you’re traveling for 7 days in Belize, chances are you will want to do some scuba diving or snorkeling at the barrier reef and other famous marine sites. Book a day trip with a reputable tour operator that has sustainable marine practices. This is important because preservation of the reef is absolutely essential if we wish to enjoy its beauty for years to come. The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest in the world after the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, however much of Australia’s reef is already dead due to human intervention. Not all tour operators are created equally, so it is important to do your research.

Blue Hole

On these tours, you will take a boat out and  get to dive or snorkel the famous marine sites such as the Belize Barrier Reef, Hol Chan Marine Park, and Shark Ray Alley. If you’re interested in scuba diving the blue hole, the trip will take over 2 hours to reach and conditions can be rough. The best way to see the blue hole is actually from above. Both Maya Island Air and Tropic Air offer Fly over tours of the blue hole which cost around $200 USD per person.

Day 3 – Day Trip to Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker Belize.JPG

I wouldn’t call any Belize itinerary the best  Belize itinerary without visiting my favorite little island, Caye Caulker. From San Pedro, take the 30 minute water taxi to the island of Caye Caulker where the motto is “go slow.” This is a small yet vibrant little island with a distinct backpacker / bohemian feel. The entire island can be walked in length between an hour to two, and walking the greatest part of the width only takes about 5 minutes. There are no cars on this island, so the best way to explore is by foot, golf cart, or bike. Caye Caulker is famous for what is known as “The Split” where a hurricane hit in 1961 and divided part of the island into two. Along The Split are a bunch of fun little beach bars where most people staying on or visiting the island will spend most of their time lounging, drinking, and eating. 3 bars to check out at the split are:

  • The Lazy Lizard

Caye_Caulker.JPG

At these beach bars you will find tables and inner-tubes to hang out on in the water as well as those ever-Instagrammable over-water swings. The entire island has a young expat vibe, much like Tulum or Bali , and quickly became my favorite area in Belize. The only thing lacking on Caye Caulker (for now) are luxury accommodations, which is why I originally passed on staying over night. Having experienced the island now, I would probably stay on Caye Caulker for at least a night or two just to completely relax and enjoy its scene. If you want an island that is young and fun and wish to save money, consider staying here for a few nights, or swapping it all together for Ambergris Caye. Just remember that there isn’t a ton to do on the island itself, but there are plenty of opportunities for snorkeling/diving and other day trips with the Caye Caulker tour operators such as  Raggamuffin Tours .

Day 4 – Swap the Islands for the Mainland’s Coastal Jungle

Many travelers at some point during their one week in Belize will spend some time in San Ignacio in the Cayo District of the mainland. I however, skipped San Ignacio as it is much further inland, and went straight to Hopkins so I can still enjoy the beautiful beach. The reason to chose staying in Hopkins over other beach towns is because the area is Coastal, but still in the jungle, so you can have access to beaches and the rainforest from one setting! It is a more off-the-beaten-path location compared to more popular Belize coastal towns such as Placentia, however being surrounded by both the ocean and the jungle is incredible and provides for even more amazing adventure opportunities.

Furthermore, Hopkins is a unique cultural area as it is home to a large Garifuna population, which offers a new perspective and experience during your time spent in Belize. Getting to Hopkins from San Pedro requires getting on two short flights: one back to Belize City and then another to Dangriga Airport, which is about a 45-minute drive from Hopkins Bay.

where to stay in hopkins belize

Where to stay in Hopkins, Belize:

Hamanasi Adventure and Dive Resort in Hopkins is the only hotel in Belize where you can see both the reef and the rainforest from one place. I highly recommend staying here because it is an incredible eco-luxury resort with all-inclusive  reef and rainforest adventures packages . It is the perfect blend of luxury, adventure, and relaxation. On your first day here, if you want to snorkel/dive some more, getting on an afternoon trip to the Belize Barrier Reef (only a 30-minute boat ride away) will be perfect. Otherwise, you can explore Hopkins Village, take a chocolate making  tour or local cooking class , or simply relax on the beach.

Click here to read my review of Hamanasi Adventure and Dive Resort

Hamanasi Hopkins Belize

Day 5 – Explore the ATM Caves

Book a tour with your hotel to visit Actun Tunichil Muknal, also known as the ATM caves and one of the top sites in Belize. Not for the faint of heart, you will enlist your greatest inner-Indiana Jones to hike through the jungles, wade through rivers, and swim through pools to get to the caves where you will continue hiking in darkness over and under boulders. Inside the caves you will get to witness the full human skeleton remains (known as the Crystal Maiden) from human sacrifices and other artifacts left over from the ancient Mayans. National Geographic Rates ATM as one of the Top 10 Sacred Caves in the World.   If you are up for a little challenge it is surely not to be missed.

atm caves

If intense physical activity isn’t your thing, there are many other options for adventure and exploration . Being that Hamanasi is a 5-star dive resort, you may also want to consider going on one of their amazing scuba or snorkeling trips .

Day 6 – Visit the Mayan Civilization of Tikal National Park

Spend a full day on a guided tour of the Tikal ruins, which is actually found in Guatemala 1.5 hours from Belize’s border. Visiting the ancient Maya civilization of Tikal is another one of the major tourist draws when visiting Belize and a UNESCO World Heritage Site . At Tikal, you will find temples, palaces, and other remains of this sacred ceremonial grounds. Tikal National Park is also one of the few world heritage sites recognized for both its natural and cultural importance, as the area is extremely biodiverse with several types of forests, wetlands, and savannah. Tikal is one of the most important archeological sites left by the Maya civilizations and is a rare immersive-learning opportunity for history and nature-lovers alike.

Tikal.JPG

Day 7 – Depart Belize

You’ve made it to the last day of your Belize vacation and it probably went by in a flash. Soak up the sun on your last day, take your last dip in the warm Caribbean waters, drink your last rum punch, eat your last fry jack, and say goodbye to this beautiful country before heading home. Don’t forget to take plenty of pictures, this is a trip you’ll want to remember for a lifetime.

General tips for traveling to Belize

  • Best time to visit Belize: The best time to visit Belize is November – April which is Belize’s dry season. The weather is hot and humid year-round, but visiting during this time will keep you free from rain and wind. Visiting during the wet or rainy season will surely save you money, but some establishments may be closed during this time.
  • Language spoken in Belize: Although there are many languages spoken throughout Belize ranging from Kriol (Belizean Creole) to Spanish, Garifuna, and Maya, the official language remains as English. English-speakers will have absolutely no issues communicating with locals here, which is not necessarily the case for Belize’s Spanish-speaking neighbors.
  • Belize currency: The currency in Belize is the Belize Dollar. The exchange rate is 2 Belize dollars for every 1 US dollars. When prices are presented in Belize dollars, you can think of it as half off!

where to stay in belize

  • Flights in Belize: The two domestic flight operators in Belize are Maya Air and Tropic Air. Local flights cost between $20 – $100 USD depending on time of year, airport, and other factors. (Booking in advance will save you money.) Tropic Air tends to be the more reliable or the two, but is also usually more expensive. I flow Maya Air because it was significantly cheaper, but I did experience flight delays. Another option to go between the cayes and mainland is to take a water taxi which is about half the price, but does take much longer. Flying in/out of the municipal airport instead of the international can save you money, so be sure to check both Belize International and Municipal airports.
  • Getting around in Belize: Renting a car in Belize can be difficult and/or expensive. The best mode of transportation in many areas of Belize and especially the ones listed above are golf carts. Golf cart rentals typically go for around $20 – $50+ US a day depending on the area and time of year. To go from city to city you will probably want to fly. Flying around in Belize is extremely easy. The planes are tiny and the “airports” are usually just landing strips. There are no lines or security to go through. You can also use planes to get from island to island or island to mainland, or you can take a water taxi/ferry for a more economical option.
  • Is Belize safe?: While the country of Belize is not much more dangerous than any other Central American country, the islands are incredibly safe. The only place I would not recommend spending time in is Belize City on the mainland (where the airport is.) If you have time in between flights it is not recommended to go out and explore as there isn’t much to see or do in the area anyway.

things to do belize.JPG

What you should know before visiting Belize

When traveling to Central America, many people choose to visit Costa Rica  as their preferred destination. While Belize is similar to Costa Rica in that it provides both beach and jungle landscapes , the most amazing thing about visiting Belize however, is that it is still very much an untouched gem and free from over-commercialization from the tourism industry. In contrast to its neighbor Mexico which is notoriously known as a popular spring break destination for American travelers, therefore making it a breeding ground for tourist traps and underaged partying, Belize maintains much of its local and authentic charm. Even during the high season at the most popular sites, you do not feel an overwhelm of heavy crowds, traffic, or disproportionately high prices. There are not many major chain hotels and much of the country relies on its own economy as a prominent exporter of citrus, bananas, and other crops.

That said, Belize won’t remain like this for long; for where there is beauty people will come, and even at the time I visited I saw many parts of the undeveloped islands and mainland housing construction sites in the form of Marriott hotels and million-dollar ocean-front condos. So get to Belize before everyone else does, because you will be sure to appreciate the beauty of its idyllic beaches, lush jungles, delicious food, and kind people.

My favorite part was the chicken drop game. That is hilarious and I cannot believe they do that! Haha. But I would love to explore the islands and see the Big Blue Hole. So impressive!

The chicken drop sure is unique. I too want to go back and explore more islands. What a wonderful place!

This looks like an amazing itinerary.

Thank you! I hope you get to experience it for yourself 🙂

That looks so wonderful!! I’ve wanted to visit San Pedro since I realized that it’s the inspiration for “La Isla Bonita”, but the rest of your article has really affirmed that I should visit. It’s so beautiful, and the barrier reef looks amazing!

Belize completely took me by surprise. I think you will be left pleasantly surprised by your visit, too! 🙂

I just went to Belize in January, such an amazing country! We stayed in San Ignacio as well as Ambergris Caye. We did almost everything on your itinerary so sounds like we enjoy the same type of vacation – a little adventure and a little relaxation! The ATM cave was by far one of the coolest experiences, we felt like Indiana Jones haha. Reading this brings up so many great memories!

I’m so glad you enjoyed Belize as much as I did! It’s definitely a magical place. A little adventure and a little relaxation are exactly what I look for in a destination, and Belize definitely didn’t disappoint! Next time you visit, I recommend checking out Hopkins! It’s an extremely unique (and beautiful) part of the mainland. Thanks for your comment and happy travels! ❤️

Did you stay in Hopkins for both Tikal and ATM caves? I am thinking about staying entire trip in San Pedro area and then traveling to mainland for a day or two for a tour. Getting around mainland without a tour group sounds challenging.

I don’t think logistically it would make a lot of sense to do day trips like those to the mainland. Especially to Tikal. Another thing to keep in mind is that visiting both Tikal and ATM caves really need a full day no matter where you are coming from, so it would be best to spend AT LEAST 1 night on the mainland but preferably more.

And you are right that it’s difficult to navigate without a tour of some sort. I really wanted to stay in Hopkins and the Hamanasi Resort made touring all the sites very easy, so even if you stay somewhere else on the mainland you should consider booking tours locally. Hopkins is also only about a 2 hour drive from the ATM caves so that’s a plus! Hope this helps and happy to answer any other questions.

Is it worth going to Belize in August?

Belize is always worth it in my opinion! 😆 It may rain but it usually clears up pretty quick followed by plenty of sunshine.

My bf and I just booked a trip for June 2023. What should we expect the weather to be like in June?

Hi there! June is the start of rainy season but it typically only rains in short bursts then follows up with sunshine. It will still be nice and warm, you’ll be just fine! Hope you have an amazing trip. 🙂

The 9 most spectacular places to visit in Belize

Jan 10, 2024 • 9 min read

voyage bergeron belize

Supported by

If you're in search of natural wonders from treetops to shore, incredible culture and a warm welcome, Belize needs to be on your travel to-do list.

There's great food, incredible nature and wildlife, and vibrant villages, each with its own distinct personality.

And because of the country’s small size and how easy it is to navigate , there’s no need to decide between the beach and the rainforests, the reefs or the caves, the parties or the peace. In Belize, you can have it all. These are the nine places you can't afford to miss when you get there.

1. Ambergris Caye

Belize's unmissable destination

Ambergris Caye is the top place to go for visitors to Belize and the vibrant town of San Pedro is the beating heart of this unique island. This colorful caye has  hotels ranging from budget to luxe and classic Caribbean activities like snorkeling and sailing. Many of Belize’s best restaurants can be found here, as well as excellent nightlife  and shopping.

Just about every kind of traveler comes to Ambergris Caye and it’s a great hub from which to experience Belize’s water-based activities.

While you can make day trips to Maya ruins and the jungle from here, it’s advisable to switch to an inland destination for those – otherwise, you will spend a lot of time traveling.

Must-see spots include driving a golf cart up to Secret Beach, eating fry jacks for breakfast at The Fry Jack House , and grabbing a glass of rum at Havana Cigars .

As for things to do, snorkeling at  Hol Chan Marine Reserve  is one of the most popular activities in the country, but heading up north to Mexico Rocks can provide an equally fish-filled experience with fewer crowds.

Planning tip:  Ambergris Caye has a small airport that’s only a 15-minute flight from Belize’s international airport and it’s easy to rent a golf cart – the island’s quintessential mode of transportation – from there.

A pair of feet in hiking boots rest at a viewpoint above an ancient city in the jungle

2. San Ignacio

Best hub for outdoor adventures

Adventure abounds in San Ignacio , a large town on Belize’s western border that embodies the country's Central American side, trading beaches for waterfalls and snorkeling for cave exploration. Much of Belize’s jungles and land-based wildlife can be found around here.

There are also many Maya ruins nearby, such as  Xunantunich and  Cahal Pech , as well as the famous ATM cave. San Ignacio makes an excellent starting point for excursions, including to other spots down the coast.

The bar and restaurant scene is on the rise and there is plenty to enjoy in the area. Head to Guava Limb Cafe for wood-fired pizza, and don’t miss the breakfast fry jacks at Pop’s Restaurant .

The overall vibe of the town feels very local, with hotels the only spot where tourists stand out among the crowd, making the bars fun for anyone craving connection with Belizeans.

Check out Soul Project below  Old House Hostel on Wednesday and Friday nights to see local musicians and artists in action.

For those craving jungle immersion, book a stay at Chaa Creek to experience the luxurious side of nature, or go further into the wilderness at Black Rock Lodge , where birders feel right at home.

Planning tip:  San Ignacio is the best starting point for travelers looking to cross the border into Guatemala to explore Tikal or continue their travels in Central America.

3. Punta Gorda

Best place for adventures away from the tourist crowds

Punta Gorda is the largest village near Belize’s southern border, a spot largely off the typical tourist track. It’s where the country’s densest jungles are found, as well as a concentrated Maya community.

This is a popular spot for adventure travelers, those who have already been to other parts of Belize, and visitors who prefer to avoid the crowds. Though it’s on the water, it’s not too beachy, so keep yourself busy with excursions out to nearby cayes or visit some of the Maya ruins nearby.

The town of Punta Gorda has a few restaurants and bars, as well as places to stay. Copal Tree Lodge is a favorite among visitors looking for a little luxury, with large rooms built into the hillside and an open restaurant area that’s often visited by howler monkeys in the morning.

There’s also a rum distillery onsite – don’t miss a chance to see how Copalli Rum gets made.

Two figures in silhouette sit at the end of a low-level pier as the sun rises over the sea

4. Placencia

Best place in Belize for beaches

The coast of Southern Belize feels like what Ambergris Caye was like before Belize became a major tourism destination, but today Placencia gets the honor of being one of the country’s top beach destinations .

This former fishing village has transformed into an upscale retreat with beach bars, top restaurants, and high-end resorts.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle Inn is one of the most desirable spots to stay, with design, decor, and a wine selection straight from the filmmaker’s imagination. Three Iguanas is an excellent, affordable accommodation option that’s right in town.

Popular excursions include taking a boat ride out to the Silk Cayes or booking an inland trip with DTOURZ to explore the nearby Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary  – it even offers overnight trips to maximize the chances of seeing the nocturnal jaguar.

In town, visitors enjoy shopping along the boardwalk, relaxing on the sandy beach, and cooling down with a scoop of gelato from the Italian-owned Tutti Frutti .

5. Ray Caye

Best private island experience

There are hundreds of islands off Belize’s coasts to choose from and Ray Caye is one of the best. The Raye Caye resort  is developed, has modern, clean lodging and an incredible restaurant.

Visitors can either choose to stay overnight or visit for the day, though overnight guests will have access to the entire island while day guests are restricted to certain areas.

It’s worth booking a few days at Ray Caye for travelers who want to get a sense of what it’s like to live on a Caribbean island – it ensures being closer to the reef than staying on shore.

It's very relaxed here, and you can happily hang around the island all day taking soothing soaks in the warm water. If you're in search of an adventure, though, there are excursions and activities to choose from, including sailing trips and snorkeling along the island's reef.

Planning tip: Look out for yoga weekend getaways, when local yoga teacher Brice Dial takes over Ray Caye with a group for a few days of relaxation and mindfulness.

6. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Best spot for nature lovers

The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is an area in Cayo near San Ignacio with lots of options for those seeking experiences in nature.

Though it doesn’t have the towering canopies of a rainforest, this unique ecosystem is still home to plenty of species of wildlife, including cougars, jaguars, acorn woodpeckers, eastern bluebirds and small critters of all kinds.

One of the best hotels in the area is another one of Francis Ford Coppola’s properties, Blancaneaux Lodge . This regal resort is perched above a river, though the onsite pool is a great place to cool off, too.

Within the reserve, visitors can soak at Río on Pools , cool off at Big Rock Falls , or book birdwatching trips and horseback riding tours. If you continue to the edge of the border, you’ll find Caracol , a Maya ruin that remains the tallest human-made structure in Belize.

Planning tip:  Though the main road has been paved to improve accessibility into the area, the volatile weather for which the tropics are known makes renting a 4WD the ideal way to reach this spot.

7. Hummingbird Highway

Best route for road trippers

Belize’s most scenic road is the Hummingbird Highway, connecting the capital city of Belmopan with the southern villages. The drive takes you through the forested mountains, between orchards and Mennonite farms, with stops for scenic cenotes and the best tamales you’ve ever had along the way.

Make time to stop at St Herman’s Blue Hole National Park to cool off, and pull over for Ms. Bertha’s Tamales for lunch – the red-and-white structure is located on the side of the highway in Middlesex.

You can't miss it, and every local knows where it is – the multiple cars surrounding it at any time are a testament to its popularity.

Because the Hummingbird Highway is situated between some of Belize’s other top destinations, it can be an ideal spot to base yourself – and the options are excellent.

The Rainforest Lodge at Sleeping Giant  immerses you in the rainforest, with an incredible view of the canopy and beyond. Ian Anderson’s Caves Branch Jungle Lodge is a family-friendly option that helped create Belize as an eco-friendly adventure travel destination and remains one of the best hotels for helping guests plan excursions of a lifetime.

Planning tip:  It’s not necessary to stay on the Hummingbird Highway to enjoy what it has to offer – just be sure to drive slowly and carefully to take in everything as you pass through. It’s a unique part of the country that makes any road trip worthwhile.

Best village for Garifuna culture

Belize is known for being diverse when it comes to culture, and one of the most unique groups in the country is the Garifuna people, who live predominantly in Hopkins , Dangriga , Placencia and areas near those villages.

Hopkins is a small, upbeat village with a long sandy beach that, while lacking in many modern trappings of life, is a unique spot to explore Garifuna culture.

One of the most popular ways to do this is by attending a drumming lesson, which inevitably turns into a dance party. The Lodge at Jaguar Reef is a great place to stay in Hopkins, but there are budget options as well.

9. Caye Caulker

Best place for laid-back travelers

Caye Caulker is an island near Ambergris Caye but with a very different personality. This is a laid-back place for backpackers, younger travelers, and those who like to go slow.

One of the most popular spots on the island is The Split , a hurricane-created channel at the northern end. This is the perfect place to grab a drink, go for a swim, and enjoy Caye Caulker’s relaxed party atmosphere.

Planning tip:  Head to Pasta per Caso , an Italian-owned restaurant with handmade pasta dishes, for a delicious meal.

  • (COVID-19) Air Transat announced the launch of their after Covid Season (Updated on June 9th, 2021) Vacation misses you too Let's fly away together. July 30. We’re delighted to announce that we’ll be resuming our flights and tour operator activities as of July 30, 2021. Starting July 30, we’ll be gradually offering flights across Canada, to the United States, Europe and the South, as well as packages to the South, provided that the travel restrictions allow it.

MONTREAL, Jan. 29, 2021 Air Canada today said that, beginning January 31, it is temporarily suspending flights to Mexican and Caribbean destinations for 90 days in response to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, particularly during the Spring Break period. The decision, designed to achieve an orderly reduction in service and minimize customer impact, was taken in collaboration with the Government of Canada following consultations.

"Air Canada believes a collaborative approach with the Government of Canada involving all air carriers is the best means to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially given concerns around the variants of COVID- 19 and travel during the Spring Break period. Through consultation we have established an approach that will allow us to achieve an orderly reduction in service to these destinations that minimizes the impact on our customers and will support important public health goals to manage COVID-19.  System-wide the incremental impact on Air Canada's cash burn is not material given the already reduced levels of passenger traffic resulting from COVID-19 and travel restrictions," said Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive Officer at Air Canada.

Following consultations with the federal government, Air Canada has agreed to suspend operations to 15 destinations beginning this Sunday, January 31 until Friday, April 30. To help ensure Canadians are not stranded abroad, Air Canada plans to operate a number of one-way commercial flights from affected destinations after January 31 in order to return customers at the suspended destinations to Canada.

Affected customers will be offered full refunds given the services are being suspended with no alternative available.

Suspended destinations include:

  • Montego Bay
  • Puerto Vallarta
  • Mexico City
  • Providenciales

“There is no denying that the COVID-19 pandemic has taken an unprecedented toll on Canadians from coast to coast, and the entire world, and its timeline continues to remain uncertain,” says Sunwing in a statement issued today.

“As a result, Sunwing is pleased to announce it is extending the validity of future travel credits until September 30, 2026.”

All Sunwing customers who were impacted by cancelled travel due to the pandemic and who made non-refundable bookings will now be able to use their credits for travel up to September 30, 2026.

The company says the extension is intended to provide Sunwing customers with greater flexibility so they can plan their future vacation to the tropics with peace of mind.

The vast majority of Sunwing’s future travel credits were set to expire by June 20, 2022, however “travel restrictions and the global pandemic have gone on far longer than anyone could have ever expected,” says the company.

Sunwing says the voucher extension accounts for the uncertain timeline and travel restrictions currently in place. “Moreover, it will ensure Canadians, including those in smaller regional markets, can fully enjoy their future getaway at a time that is convenient for them.”

The travel credit extension is specific to those customers who made non-refundable bookings. Any Sunwing customers with cancelled travel as a result of the pandemic, and who made bookings that were refundable or partially refundable, have received refunds in the form of original payment.

The expiration date on customers’ existing future travel credits will automatically be updated, so there is no action required on the part of travel agents or customers. Travel credits can be redeemed when booking an upcoming flight or vacation package.

Advisory – Temporary suspension of our operations  Following measures announced by the Canadian government, we are suspending our regular operations from January 31 to April 30, 2021. For our customers currently at destination whose return flights were scheduled during this period, please rest assured that we’re working on a repatriation plan, the details of which will be posted shortly on our platforms. We’re receiving a high volume of questions and calls about this announcement and its impact on our operations. We know that it’s causing a great deal of concern among our customers currently at destination or who planned to travel in the coming weeks, but rest assured that we’re doing everything we can to ensure that this situation beyond our control has the least impact possible on them. That includes making sure that we have a sufficient number of repatriation flights and available seats to return all our customers back home as soon as possible.

We thank you for your understanding and patience.

As of today, the Canadian government will require all air travellers aged five and over arriving in Canada to provide a mandatory negative result from a COVID-19 test. This test must be conducted within 72 hours of boarding. You will find all details on the Canadian government website . From the beginning of the pandemic, our priority has always been to protect our clients and to contribute to efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19. We have updated our FAQ related to this new requirement.

The Government of Canada continues to take unprecedented action to protect the health and safety of Canadians by introducing a new measure to help prevent further introduction and transmission of COVID-19 and new variants of the virus into Canada.

On December 31, 2020, the Minister of Transport, the Honourable Marc Garneau, under the authority of the Aeronautics Act, is requiring effective January 7, all passengers five years of age or older, be required to test negative for COVID-19 before travelling by air from another country to Canada.

Documentation of a negative laboratory test result must be presented to the airline prior to coming to Canada. The test must be performed using a COVID-19 molecular polymerase chain reaction (or PCR) test within 72 hours prior to boarding a flight to Canada.

All travellers will have their quarantine plans reviewed by a government official and, if not suitable, will be asked to quarantine in a federal quarantine facility.

Travellers to Canada must use ArriveCAN and provide accurate contact information and their mandatory 14-day quarantine plan on or before entry.

The government has taken action to increase surveillance and enforcement of these mandatory quarantine restrictions.

Violating any instructions provided when you enter Canada is an offence under the Quarantine Act and could lead to up to six months in prison and/or $750,000 in fines.

Canadians who are currently travelling and returning to Canada soon should start immediately arranging for a COVID-19 test, to avoid a delay in their return to Canada. Canadians who are planning to travel abroad should consider how they will meet these requirements before departure.

Questions and answers

Q. Will all air passengers travelling to Canada be required to have a negative COVID-19 test result?

A. Starting January 7, 2021, anyone flying to Canada from another country, unless exempted, will be required to provide written or electronic documentation showing they received a negative result from a COVID-19 test conducted within 72 hours prior to their scheduled boarding.

The test must be performed using a COVID-19 molecular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Without a negative COVID-19 test, travellers will be denied boarding onto their flight.

Q. Is the 72 hours starting at the beginning of the trip or the scheduled time arriving in Canada? Is the time related to the time of the test, or when the results are provided?

A. A COVID-19 molecular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test must have been conducted within 72 hours prior to boarding a flight to Canada. In other words, the specimen should be within three days prior to the flight, with the expectation that the results will come in the intervening period.

This timing recognizes that it may take a few days for passengers to receive their results following a PCR test. In addition, flights may be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, outside the air carrier’s control.

Q. What will happen if travellers can’t get a COVID-19 test in the country they are in? Can they still board a flight and get tested in Canada? Is there another option in Canada when they land if they are not able to get a COVID-19 test abroad?

A. Persons who are travelling from a country where PCR testing is unavailable will be required to report to a designated Public Health Agency of Canada quarantine facility for the duration of their mandatory 14-day quarantine. Delays in obtaining test results does not apply.

Q. Which COVID-19 tests are official/acceptable?

A. The test result must be from a lab accredited by an external organization (e.g., a government, a professional association or ISO accreditation). Only written or electronic proof of a negative lab test result (PCR test) conducted within 72 hours prior to boarding a flight to Canada will be accepted.

Q. Will passengers still require temperature checks with this new requirement in place?

A. At this time, yes. All existing health requirements, including health check questions, temperature screening and the wearing of masks on board flights to Canada remain in place.

Q. Can the airline refuse boarding if a traveller doesn’t have / can’t get a test?

A. Yes. Unless otherwise exempt, presentation of a valid negative test to the airline will be a condition of boarding a flight to Canada and therefore, an airline will be required to refuse boarding to travellers that are unable to demonstrate this.

Q. Who is exempted from this requirement?

A. Those exempted from this requirement include children who are not five years of age or older.

Other exemptions include:

a) a crew member or a person who seeks to enter Canada only to become such a crew member

b) Emergency service providers

c) Technical stops – flights refueling

Q. Would a proof of the vaccine replace the test?

A. At this time, proof of having a vaccine will not replace a negative test result. While a vaccine protects an individual from illness, further evidence is required to understand if a vaccinated person can still shed virus.

Q. Why won’t the pre-boarding testing reduce quarantine measures?

A. Pre-boarding testing is another measure adding to our layers of protection but it can still miss some COVID-19 infections. The 14-day quarantine is the most effective measure we know for limiting the spread of COVID-19.

Q. What extra measures has the Canada Borders Services Agency (CBSA) put in place?

A. The CBSA enhanced its presence at airports to observe travellers and any physical indication that they may be ill. Additionally, border services officers (BSOs) apply greater scrutiny and confirm that a traveller’s quarantine plan aligns with information provided via ArriveCAN. BSOs will also ask specific questions to determine whether the traveller will be in contact with vulnerable persons.

Where questions arise, the person is referred to a Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) official on-site at the airport.

The CBSA, along with its partners, continues to monitor the global environment and takes the steps required to keep Canada and Canadians safe.

For questions about quarantine requirements and enforcement, contact PHAC.

Q. Who will pay for the cost of a PCR test abroad?

A. Travellers should contact their travel insurance provider (whether they have a group, an individual or a credit-card type of insurance) to find out what their COVID-19 related medical expenses coverage include.

For travellers who do not have travel insurance, we strongly recommend they get insurance immediately and make sure that it covers for COVID-19-related medical expenses, other non-COVID-19 emergency-related expenses, as well as trip cancellation and interruption. Read the fine prints and verify the terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and requirements of your insurance policy.

Otherwise, travellers are expected to cover any cost related to being tested and obtaining the proof of their test result.

Q. What consular services are available if a traveller cannot board a flight back to Canada?

A. We continue to provide consular service to Canadians abroad. Information about Canada’s Consular services is available on travel.gc.ca: About Consular Services . Canadian government offices abroad do not provide medical attention (including administering COVID-19 testing) or cover medical expenses for Canadian citizens abroad.

Canadians should sign up with the Registration of Canadians Abroad if they have not done so already. This service enables Canadians to receive important safety updates from the Government of Canada.

Q. If someone has to reschedule their return trip for a PCR test, would accommodations, rebooking fees and fees for tests be eligible under the Emergency Loan Program?

A. Canadian citizens affected by COVID-19 outside of Canada must demonstrate they had existing plans to return to Canada prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and that they do not have another source of funds.

Most Canadians abroad would no longer be eligible for a CV19 loan (as per current eligibility criteria) given that they would have had plenty of time and opportunity to return to Canada since the pandemic reached a critical point in March/April 2020.

It is no longer enough for clients to indicate that they are attempting to book travel back to Canada now and are unable to do so because of COVID-19, or because of the new PCR test requirement.

Q. Are Canadians who travelled after the Government of Canada advised against non-essential travel outside of Canada due to the COVID-19 outbreak eligible to the loan?

A. Canadians who travelled abroad after the Government of Canada advised to avoid non-essential travel (March 13, 2020) due the COVID-19 outbreak are unlikely to be eligible for a loan given that they would have had plenty of time and opportunity to return to Canada since the pandemic reached a critical point in March/April 2020.

Q. Can the loan be used to cover limited costs (transportation, food, etc.) AFTER repatriation to Canada?

A. COVID-19 Emergency Loans may not be used to cover costs related to mandatory quarantine or self-isolation in Canada.

News release

April 17, 2020                Ottawa              Transport Canada

COVID-19 is a global public health challenge that has changed the daily lives of people around the world, and ensuring the safety and security of Canadians remains the Government of Canada’s top priority.

Today, the Minister of Transport, the Honourable Marc Garneau, announced new measures requiring all air passengers to have a non-medical mask or face covering to cover their mouth and nose during travel. These measures come into effect at noon EDT on April 20, 2020.

When travelling by air, travellers will be asked to cover their mouth and nose:

  • at Canadian airport screening checkpoints, where the screeners cannot always keep two metres of separation between themselves and the traveller;
  • when they cannot physically distance from others, or as directed by the airline employees; and
  • when directed to do so by a public health order or public health official.

Aviation passengers on all flights departing or arriving at Canadian airports will also be required to demonstrate they have the necessary non-medical mask or face covering during the boarding process otherwise they will not be allowed to continue on their journey. Passengers should follow the current  Public Health Agency of Canada’s guidance  on face coverings.

Voyages Bergeron has been in business since 1950, with offices in Montreal and Longueil. Thanks to the trust we have earned with our customers, Voyages Bergeron has been a recognized and respected name in the tourist industry for over half a century.

Most of the time our service fees are included in our prices. A service fee may apply for reserving a flight. We always let you know before you make your reservation if we will charge a service fee. Any change or cancellation that you make to your file will incur a service fee charged by Voyages Bergeron, as well as fees required by the tour operator, which may be as much as the total cost of your reservation. For more details, please see the Regulations and Policies section of the Voyages Bergeron and tour operator websites.

These are additional and compulsory fees of 0.1% ($1 for every $1000) which contribute to an indemnisation fund for Quebec travel-agent customers. The fees are administered by the Consumer Protection Office and are automatically added to your bill and charged to your credit card.

You can receive reimbursement of this fee from our agency if a service supplier such as an airline is unable to respect its obligations, for example in the case of bankruptcy.

All of our all-inclusive packages are available on our website. Our website is also our best search tool.

SSL technology codes your credit card number, name, address and telephone number before it is transmitted over the Internet. This process gives electronic transactions the same security guarantees as purchases made by telephone. In the final step of making your reservation, note the padlock symbol in the upper left corner of the webpage address bar. That symbol indicates it is a secure transaction.

  • Be sure to make a photocopy of the credit card used, as well as a photocopy of one piece of picture-ID belonging to the credit card holder.
  • Fax the photocopy to your travel agent, or scan and send it by e-mail.

If travelling to a foreign country, it is recommended that all Canadians carry a Canadian passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your return date. Please refer to the travel section of the Government of Canada website.

Yes. We must let the tour operator know that your infant will be accompanying you. Also, certain countries require payment for a child’s tourist card.

We must also make sure that your infant can stay at your hotel. Some hotels are adult-only, and some will not accept more than one child per room.

Attention: If your infant will be turning 2 years of age during your trip, he or she is considered a child before leaving and must therefore pay the child price.

Usually tour and hotel operators give special rates for children ages 12 and under. Sometimes teens between 13-17 years of age also benefit from a special rate.

You will get all your travel documents by e-mail about 2 weeks before your departure. Please print and bring them with you for your trip.

Certain warm destinations require a tourist card, for example Mexico, Cuba and Dominican Republic. Tourist cards are distributed in the airplane by the flight attendants.

ATTENTION : With Sunwing Vacation and Signature Vacation , the tourist card to enter Dominican Republic is not included in the package. Each passenger must pay $10 US on arrival at the Dominican Republic airport, as well as $20 US in exit tax when leaving.

A travel document is issued for a plane ticket, a package, car rental, hotel reservation, cruise, etc. This information is registered in your name in the supplier's’ computer system. You will receive a copy of these electronic documents by e-mail, and must print and have them with you for your trip.

The electronic ticket that you print is simply to remind you of your trip schedule. When you arrive at your airline counter, you need only to prove your identity to get access to the services you have reserved.

The advantage for you is that you cannot lose your ticket. By having it in your e-mails, you can print it out wherever you are in the world.

Certain airlines offer seat selection service, others do not. In most cases you pay the airline for this service, and pre-select your seats directly on their website.

Please have on hand :

  • The date and number of your departure and flight

  • Name of passenger(s)

Consult our Advice and Warnings Per Country section at least twice (when planning your trip and just before leaving) in order to verify that your destination is a safe place to go.

For Canadian Government advice, please click here .

When a natural disaster strikes, it is difficult to predict damage. According to recommendations from the Government of Canada, the tour operator is responsible for cancelling your trip and changing your destination to repatriate you, etc. The tour operator will decide if the destination will be changed or if you will be reimbursed for the trip in totality or in part, or if it will give you a travel credit. The tour operator can also decide that the trip is nonrefundable.

For Canadian Government advice, .

Your representative at the destination is aware of your arrival and will be waiting for you at the airport. The person will be clearly identified as your tour operator’s representative. That person will tell you which bus to get on to take you to your hotel, and will give you the schedule for an information session to help you find out what is available at the hotel. He or she should also be able to answer any questions you may have.

The procedure is similar on the day you leave. Your representative will let you know the time and place to wait at your hotel for the bus that will take you back to the airport for your departure.

We advise you to ask this question to the representative at your destination. He or she will know about tipping customs at the hotel. Certain hotels categorically refuse tips, whereas others have no rules about tipping. Tipping is at your discretion and can be distributed among the quality services that you’ve received. You may even see tips given in the form of clothing, hygiene products, school supplies, objects, etc., particularly in Cuba.

In certain hotels, tips are included in your package. Usually room-cleaning staff are not part of this tipping package. You may want to leave a small amount each day or a lump sum at the end of the trip, depending on whether you always have the same person taking care of your room.

If you are interested in taking an excursion, you can speak with the representative at your destination. They will be able to give you information and book something for you.

Certain tour operators sell excursions here, before your departure. Contact us to find out more.

International hotel check-out time is 12:00 noon. In certain hotels it may be 11 a.m. If your return flight is in the evening, ask the hotel about what arrangements they offer to accommodate their guests. There may be a courtesy room for people with late departures. If your room is available, the hotel might rent it to you for a few hours for a modest fee.

Unfortunately you travel agent cannot organize this for you before departure.
