With so many Havelis, bungalows, and other historically rich places to explore in Jaisalmer, you can get the true taste of Rajasthani culture and history.
Apart from the culture and heritage, one of my favorite places to visit in Jaisalmer is the great Thar Desert where you can enjoy a visit to the dunes.
From camel rides to desert safaris, you can do a lot of activities here and enjoy a mesmerizing sunset from the desert too.
And if you have time, then do spend a night in the desert to enjoy a night full of stargazing and beautiful landscape.
How to Reach: You can travel from Delhi on the train to Jaisalmer or you can choose to take a direct flight to Jaisalmer too.
Distance from Delhi: 766 km

Considered the spiritual capital of India, Varanasi is an amazing place to visit from Delhi as a weekend getaway. The city is located on the banks of the Ganges River and is a popular destination for Hindu pilgrims.
Due to its beauty and traditions, photographers from all over the world visit this city to capture its essence. You can attend the evening Aarti at the ghats and find peace among the chaos here.
There are over 50 ghats here with numerous temples and each ghat has its own significance. Apart from the ghats, there are several places to visit here such as forts, streets, and more.
Learn about the sacred ritual, explore the temples, trying out the cafes, there is no shortage of things to do here.

Another amazing idea is a trip to Leh, Ladakh which is the largest town in the Ladakh region. Since it is situated at an altitude of 3,500m,
Leh is surrounded by mountains and experiences a cold desert climate. So, the winters tend to be freezing here with occasional snowfall. Apart from the unique climate, Leh is also known for its monasteries and attractions.
The best thing about Leh is that it is your base for exploring the Ladakh region. From the city, you can head to places like Pangong, Nubra Valley, Han Le, Tso Moriri, and so on.
And in Leh too, you have several amazing attractions to explore such as the Magnetic Hill, Khardungla Pass, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, War Museum, Zorawar Fort, and so on.
So, if you have a long weekend in hand, then you can easily plan a trip to Leh and enjoy all the amazing experiences that this place has to offer.
Best Time to Visit: May – October
How to Reach: From Delhi, you can take a direct flight to Leh or you can reach Manali first and then take the Volvo bus to reach Leh. The latter mode of transportation will take 3 days to reach Leh so if you are short on time, book a flight.

Trip Duration: 4 – 5 days
Trip Budget: 10,000 – 20,000 INR
Things to Do: Trekking, Camping, River Rafting, Sightseeing, Monasteries, and Shopping.
Rann of Kutch
Rann of Kutch is one of the least visited places from Delhi because people think it’s far away when it’s actually not. One of the largest salt deserts in the world, Rann of Kutch is one of the top places to visit in Gujarat .
Although this salt marsh is covered with water for 8 months in a year while the remaining 4 months, it turns into a salt desert with only white salt to see for miles ahead of you.
This place is located close to the India-Pakistan border which is heavily patrolled on both sides.
One of the best reasons to visit Rann of Kutch is to attend the Rann Festival where you can watch the cultural performances, check souvenir stalls, handicrafts, etc. here.
If you are lucky enough to watch the salt desert on a full moon night, you will just fall in love with this place.
Best Time to Visit: November to March
How to Reach: From Delhi, you can take a flight to Bhuj or a train to Bhuj and then reach Rann of Kutch via road. Another option is to take a flight to Ahmedabad and then reach Kutch by hiring a cab.

Things to Do: Camping, Art and Handicrafts, Salt Desert, and Shopping.

Weekend Getaways near New Delhi
Weekend getaways.
The capital city is strategically situated in the midst of absolutely great places which make for gorgeous weekend getaways from Delhi. And we all know that if you are staying in the city, you need plenty of short breaks to rejuvenate yourself. While Jaipur, Shimla, Kasauli, Agra and Dehradun are certainly the most popular weekend getaways from Delhi, there are other lesser-known spots which are gradually becoming favourites. Some of these are Pushkar, Alwar, Bharatpur, Barog and Chail which are known for their natural beauty, history and most importantly serenity.
Popular Weekend Getaways from Delhi
Among our favourite delhi tourism , Alwar stands out for its natural beauty, peace and of course the beautiful Sariska National Park. Perfect for all kinds of travellers, one can either relax in a stunning property in the outskirts or choose an adventure camp with trekking, cycling and loads of outdoorsy activities. An ideal two days trip near Delhi, Alwar is also where travellers can enjoy the rustic village life of Rajasthan since most of the resorts are located in small villages. Things you can’t miss on your one day weekend getaway from Delhi are morning safari at Sariska National Park, lunch at Bikamp Aravallis and a tour of Sariska Palace.
A little further ahead from Alwar is the gorgeous pink city of Jaipur. One of the most popular weekend getaways from Delhi, Jaipur packs in a memorable vacation in two days. One can explore archaic forts, enjoy street food at bustling markets, head to chowki dhani for an unforgettable evening and shop for gorgeous ethnic wear in the city’s old bazaars. The best thing about Jaipur is that every trip to the city will offer you something different. It could be the weather that surprises you, the city’s charming locals or a culinary experience you didn’t expect. Most travellers also consider Jaipur as one of the best luxury weekend getaways from Delhi since it is home to the best hotels and resorts . Adding charm to your holiday, these resorts are designed to offer travellers a luxurious experience. Complete with Rajasthani decor, local food, folk dances and efficient service, some of the best resorts in Jaipur are Savista Resort, Treehouse Resort and Chowki Dhani.
For travellers who are looking for unique weekend getaways from Delhi, Pushkar is a great option. A quiet, peaceful town, Pushkar is most well-known for the Pushkar Fair which takes place in December. For the rest of the year, Pushkar serves as a pit stop between Jaipur and Jodhpur for backpackers and foreigners. A charming, sacred town, Pushkar nurtures an old-school charm mixed with a quirky hostel culture and is slowly becoming a great option for weekend getaways from Delhi.
The best place to visit in Pushkar certainly is the bustling main bazaar which is situated around umpteen temple ghats . Home to the famous Brahma Temple, the market in Pushkar is where you’ll witness a seamless coming together of world cultures. The main market is also a great place for those who enjoy shopping since you’ll get a variety of silver jewellery, boho bags, colourful Rajasthani apparel and home decor at unimaginable prices. If you are driving from Delhi or taking the train, we suggest keeping aside an extra day since it might get too tiring. One can also combine Ajmer and Pushkar together since the two places are located nearby.
Himachal Pradesh
If, on the other hand, you prefer choosing the hills as weekend getaways from Delhi, there are tons of options. Shimla, Kasauli, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Nainital are some of the most popular weekend getaways near Delhi and are usually packed during weekends. But, there are a few hidden spots around these popular cities that travellers can explore.
For instance, on the way to Shimla, the small town of Nahan is popular for its gorgeous lake, campsites and hotels . If you don’t want to spend your weekend in a busy hill station such as Shimla, Nahan is a smart alternative. In fact, for most travellers who are on the lookout for budget weekend getaways near Delhi, places such as Nahan, Barog and Morni Hills are great options. Kasauli is counted among some of the most popular weekend getaways from Delhi. Far less crowded than Shimla, Kasauli is slowly garnering attention for its pine-clad mountains and breathtaking sunset views. Another reason why travellers prefer Kasauli is the plethora of mesmerising resorts which offer a luxurious yet authentic experience in the mountains. Among the best places to stay in Kasauli , you must try Baikunth Resorts, Kasauli Castle Resorts and Winnies Holiday Resort and Spa.
Shimla has been one of the most popular weekend getaways from Delhi and the hill station continues to be a favourite with travellers. Situated almost 345km from Delhi, Shimla offers respite from the heat as well as gives travellers an opportunity to escape from the humdrum of everyday life. Places around Shimla such as Kufri, Mashobra and Naldera are also considered beautiful weekend getaways from Delhi. In fact, the smaller towns of Kufri and Chail are ideal for luxury travellers and one can book a comfortable two-day stay in one of the stunning resorts.

While Mussorie is one of the most preferred weekend getaways from Delhi, especially during the winter season, Dehradun is visited throughout the year. Dehradun is known for small bakeries which have been in the same family for generations and an old city charm; Mussorie, on the other hand, is popular for its natural beauty and nearby vantage points which offer breathtaking views of the mountains.

Lying on the Delhi-Agra route are the holy towns of Mathura and Vrindavan which are also popular weekend getaways from Delhi especially if you are looking for a short holiday. The benefit of choosing either of these towns as weekend getaways from Delhi is that they instantly take you into another world. Famous for archaic temples, the cities come alive during the festivals of Janamashtami and Holi. We do recommend booking in advance if you are going to choose either of the two cities as weekend getaways from Delhi since they get crowded during weekends.

Hatu Peak Trek
Seasoned trekkers have noted how the most unexplored treks generally tend to be the most rewarding ones. The Hatu Peak Trek is one of them. One of the shortest and newest treks near Delhi, the Hatu Peak trek prides in its virgin beauty. The trek is only a day long, and treats its trekkers to cherished views of a characteristic Himalayan beauty- dark pine forests, enchanting meadows, superb mountain views and so on. The trek takes a narrow wooden route that travels all the way up to the Hatu Peak, overlooking the village of Narkanda below. A sacred Hindu temple, the Hatu Mata temple, sits atop the little hill, making it a popular spot for devotees as well. During winter months, the trail remains blocked with snow, making it inaccessible during this time. The best time to access it thus, is during the spring or summer months when the forests here remain in full bloom. There are several campsites around the peak as well, for those desiring to spend a night in the area.
Distance from Delhi: 431 Kilometres approximately

Rising gracefully from lush gardens and surrounded by a symmetrical charbagh (four-part garden), Humayun's Tomb exudes an air of tranquility and grandeur. The use of red sandstone and white marble in its construction adds a captivating contrast to the monument's façade, making it a visual delight for visitors and photographers alike.Interestingly, Humayun's Tomb served as an architectural inspiration for the world-famous Taj Mahal, which was built later by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife. The intricate geometric patterns, arched entrances, and delicate lattice work seen in Humayun's Tomb can be traced in the design of the Taj Mahal.Today, the tomb complex houses the graves of several other members of the Mughal dynasty, making it a cherished historical site and a symbol of India's rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, marvel at the detailed calligraphy adorning the walls, and immerse themselves in the captivating history that surrounds this majestic monument.
Jantar Mantar is an astronomical observatory situated in the heart of the capital city of India – Delhi. This is a phenomenal marvel of architectural brilliance whose shape represents a big sundial. Since its construction, this observatory has seemingly contributed to the study of both time and space. Maharaja Jai Singh laid the foundation stone for constructing this magnificent structure in the year 1724. Likewise, today, we have four more observatories situated in the cities of Varanasi, Jaipur, Mathura, and Ujjain. The primary aim underlying the construction of this massive observatory was the preparation of astronomical charts. These were then used to track the local time zones by keeping an eye on the movement and transitions of the sun, the moon and the different planets that constitute our solar system. It thus follows that a highly precious observatory of the ancient past never fails to surprise the technology-influenced astronomers and researchers. The Delhi’s Jantar Mantar has a got a whopping height of around 723 feet and is comprised of different astronomical instruments totalling to a count of 13 units. Amongst these, the most precious and widely acknowledged ones are – Samrat Yantra, Misra Yantra, Ram Yantra, and Jai Prakash Yantra. The sundial, which forms the chief attraction here, is highly influenced by the ancient Egyptian Ptolemaic Structure. It strictly adheres to the sequential celestial orders of the local arrangement of the equatorial, ecliptic, and the horizontal-zenith planes. Thus, Delhi’s Jantar Mantar brings close the three different dimensions of belief, universe, and society. It conjoins the aspects of astronomical skills with cosmological concepts arising out of the court of a scholarly prince.
The colossal Red Fort in Delhi was the home of the formidable Mughal emperors for around 200 years until the British took over it in 1857. The fort is not just a symbol of the popular grandeur of the Mughal era, but it has withstood the trials of turbulent times, especially during India’s most historical events that shaped the foundation of the country. This is one of the most famous tourist attractions of the national capital. The UNESCO declared the Red Fort a World Heritage Site in 2007, in recognition of its significance. Red Fort is one of the most celebrated monuments of India and is the symbol of valor and peace. This 17th-century monument is of octagonal shape and it covers around 255 acres of land. The total number of gates here is three. The royals used to enter the fort through the Khizrabad Gate that has been closed for commoners now. The Lahore and Delhi Gates are open to locals and tourists. The fort was planned to house a palace inside its campus. The Red Fort still a historical and architectural wonder.History of Red FortThe construction of the Red Fort started in 1638 with the Emperor Shah Jahan deciding to leave Agra to create a new Mughal capital, Shahjahanabad, which is presently known as the Old Delhi. With architect Lahori’s work at Agra Fort, Shah Jahan was so impressed that he asked him to work on this fort as well. However, despite having elaborate and grand illustrations in the early years, the shine and glory of the Red Fort eventually faded when Shah Jahan fell ill and had to go back to Agra to recuperate. Since 1658, Shah Jahan’s son Aurangzeb, who was known to be power hungry, took the charge of the fort and kept his father imprisoned at Agra Fort for over 8 years until he died. The opulence of the Red Fort and the fortunes of the royal family started diminishing with Aurangzeb ruling the last phase of his reign which was bristled with uncertainty, unfaithfulness and treachery. Persian ruler Nadir Shah attacked the fort in 1739 and looted several valuables, including the Peacock Throne and the Kohinoor diamond. In 1752, the fort belonged to the Maratha kings who defeated the Mughals in a battle. The Marathas had to melt down the silver ceiling of the Diwan-e-Khaas hall in order to raise funds to save the capital from the attack of the Afghan invaders under the leadership of Ahamd Shah Durrani. In 1857, the Britishers made the Red Fort their army base and looted further valuables. In 1947, after gaining independence, the Red Fort was chosen as the main site for public celebration.

Amber Fort , located in the arid hill countryside just outside the city, is the city's star attraction and tourist place. The mighty fort-palace has its architecture built in Hindu-Muslim style. Jaigarh Fort is considered one of the strongest and mightiest forts in the region. There are spectacular gardens that are visible in the scenery. Nahargarh Fort offers stupendous views of the Man Sagar lake and the Amber Fort.
