Air travel has been tricky at best over the last couple of years, so many people have turned back to the classic American getaway: a road trip . It’s an ideal way to explore your own backyard on a whim for a memorable vacation, either this summer or later this year.

We took five of the country’s major hubs and found four weekend getaway ideas for each, all easily accessible detours. Read on for our picks for the best weekend getaways around the U.S., along with tips for where to stay and what to do while you're there

From Los Angeles

Catalina Island

Take the one-hour journey to this island 22 miles or so off the coast via the Catalina Express ferry , which departs from San Pedro, Long Beach, or Dana Point daily; once you’re here, biking and walking are the main transport modes (or you can rent a golf cart for longer drives). Catalina Island is a startling contrast to the mainland, with more than a whiff of East Coast hideouts like Nantucket: Start at the quaint main town, Avalon, and gorge on seafood that’s barely minutes from the water—try Bluewater Grill , right on the dock.

Then head inland to El Rancho Escondido , which earned acclaim for its Arabian horse-breeding program. The ponies are gone now, though, and much of the land has been deeded over to vines, where Rusack Vineyards focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. Outdoorsy types can hike the entire length of the 38.5-mile Trans Catalina Trail in about four days, too, with campgrounds for overnighting along the route. The Bellanca Hotel in Avalon is the plushest perch if you’d rather have someone else make your bed—or sleep in a bed, period.

Palm Springs

Around 50 percent of the locals in this Coachella Valley hub identify as LGBTQ+, adding appeal for any open-minded, easy-going visitor. The main drag of gay bars, along Arenas Road, is a rollicking night out for anyone—and just 90 mins from Los Angeles , as long as you avoid the peak times for the drive, like Friday evenings. Come here, too, to explore the design style which was popular when Palm Springs was in its heyday: Midcentury modernism is celebrated everywhere, from antique stores specializing in sleek Danish sofas to the soon-to-open Modernism Museum, which will include installations like a 1950s-era RV, plus a gift shop (of course). Just 20 years ago, there were about 50 wineries in and around this charming small town just over three hours from LA; now there are more than 300, and the area’s becoming more widely known for its fine Pinot Noirs and Zinfandels. The self-guided tour run by the Paso Wine Country Alliance is the quickest way to zip between vineyards, but it’s worth hiring local guide Coy Barnes, aka the Wine Wrangler , to drive you for the day if you’re keen to quaff at every tasting room. Some rooms at the Paso Robles Inn have hot tubs on their balconies (a nod to the town’s origins as a spa center) that are fed by water piped in from nearby hot springs.

San Diego, California

Beaches and green spaces are the defining assets of San Diego , just under a two-hour drive south of LA. There’s the 1,750-acre Torrey Pines State Reserve —kayak through the wetlands for an up-close view—and a namesake golf course with two 18-hole championship courses perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific; stay at the Arts & Crafts-style Lodge at Torrey Pines , right by the 18 th green. San Diego has 75 miles of coastline, featuring plenty of noteworthy beaches , most of them studded with surfers—hit Moonlight State Beach if you want to head out on the water, rent fishing gear, or snap a shot with the iconic Hotel Del Coronado as a backdrop from Coronado Beach. Southwest Michigan

Drive two and a half hours to eat at the delicious, diner-like Pennyroyal Cafe & Provisions from chef Melissa Corey, or taste some of the estate-grown vintages at Modales Wines . Work off your meal with a bracing hike to the top of Mount Baldhead for spectacular views. You’ll find all that in this corner of Michigan, plus the perennial bonus of gleaming beaches, charming all-American coastal towns, and the best sundowner spots in the state overlooking the lush waters of Lake Michigan.

Wisconsin Dells

It might be three hours north of the city, but a trip here is like stepping decades into the past for a miles-long strip of world-class water parks. The Dells emerged as a family-friendly destination in the 1950s and has changed little since then. The best-known fun fest is the Kalahari , a resort with Master Blaster uphill water coasters plus an outdoor lazy river; but purists vouch for nearby Noah’s Ark , which boasts the largest number of water slides in the area. There are outdoorsy options for an adrenaline-powered weekend, too, like the six-acre, zip-line-filled Chula Vista Resort park. Just save room for some cheese curds—the best come from Carr Valley.

Lake Geneva

Just 90 minutes north of Chicago , this resort town is the Midwest’s answer to the Hamptons or Newport , made famous by the iconic families that helped build the Windy City (think Wrigley and Sears). The waterfront offers public access for more than 20 miles, thanks to an early treaty that ring-fenced the Shore Path from any development. Otherwise, expect ritzy Gilded Age mansions and over-the-top hotels like the magnificent Queen Anne-style Black Point Estate and Gardens , now a museum, or the turreted Baker House , ranked one of the town’s best hotels. Don’t assume it’s solely a warm-weather destination, though: Winterfest in January and February is a charming, less-trafficked option than midsummer.

Cave Point in Door County

Much like Cape Cod curls into the Atlantic, this 75-mile peninsula juts into Lake Michigan like a raised finger, and it shares much with its New England counterpart. First emerging as an artsy summer colony, it has sandy, family-friendly beaches—more than 50 public ones—and 300 miles of shoreline. Come to Door County to amble around its galleries, or hike around the 14 miles of trails quilting its eastern tip in Whitefish Dunes. Make this a long weekend, as it’s almost a four-hour drive from Chicago, and don’t leave without making a pilgrimage to the Swedish restaurant Al Johnson’s , famous for the herd of goats grazing on its grassy roof.

From Washington, D.C.

Crystal Grottoes in Boonsboro

A little over an hour northwest of Washington, D.C. , Boonsboro combines natural wonders with a sobering role in American history. Explore the stalactite-crusted Crystal Grottoes here—the Fairyland cave’s red tinge is thanks to iron oxide—or go whitewater rafting and tubing in the waters near Harpers Ferry. Then squeeze in a trip to the site of Antietam, the bloodiest battle on U.S. soil where 23,000 Civil War soldiers were killed or wounded within just 12 hours of fighting in 1862. Planning a romantic weekend? It’s easy to see why: Historic architecture and cobbled streets are a glimpse back past the American Revolution to European settlers’ earliest days. Board the replica 18th-century, 110-foot sloop Providence, a Pirates of the Caribbean prop now moored here as a museum, or head to the Del Ray neighborhood for an assortment of street art that shows the city isn’t simply resting on the past. Stay at the Alexandrian, an Autograph Collection hotel right in the center of Old Town that overlooks the river from National Harbor.

Bodie Island Light Station in Cape Hatteras

It’s a long drive—around six hours—Cape Hatteras is still one of the best weekend getaways from D.C., thanks to the astonishing views and bracing air of the Outer Banks . The 70-mile-long National Seashore here was the first in the country and is anchored by the landmark Bodie Island Light Station, the tallest lighthouse in the U.S. with more than 200 stairs. Head to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum for a glimpse as to why these waters earned that nickname—more than 600 shipwrecks caused by treacherous, shifting shoals. Then again, with the right captain, you can brave those waters yourself on a fishing charter that can easily reach the Gulf Stream. The choice hotel is the charming Inn on Pamlico Sound ; wake up with its seaside view, and you’ll understand how worthwhile it is to splurge on a sound-front room.

Great Smoky Mountains

Yes, it’s an eight-hour drive to reach this ridge, but the jaw-dropping scenery will make the effort more than worthwhile—and we’re not just talking about the sight of a statue of Dolly Parton as you reach the end, erected in her honor in the legend’s hometown of Sevierville.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited in the NPS network (and free to enter, too). It spreads across 500,000 acres in the Appalachian Mountains, straddling two states; the easiest entry point from D.C. is the Sugarlands Visitor Center near Gatlinburg. Once you’re in the park, start walking: There are 800 miles of trails in total, including a portion of the official Appalachian Trail. You can also enjoy a guided tour on horseback operated from several stables dotted around the reserve; just make sure to call ahead and book . The peak times for visiting include leaf-peeping season, of course, plus early summer, when the flame azaleas are in bloom. This is a year-round park, though, with plenty to enjoy even in winter, when the views from high perches like Clingman’s Dome are particularly impressive. In season, you can camp at one of ten different grounds (reserve a spot here ) or book a room at one of the hotels in Gatlinburg, which effectively serves as a resort community adjacent to the park.

Cassadaga, Florida

The hub of Volusia County, just east of Orlando and around four hours from Miami , is Cassadaga—a town whose residents will likely know you’re coming. Homes here are occupied by psychics and folks who generally believe in life after death, reincarnation, and the power of the spirits. Come to the Spiritualist Camp and check out the list of mediums and healers taking bookings that day, working on everything from past life regression to aura photography. One standout is Louis Gates , who grew up here as the child of two psychics; ask him about his childhood, as he has intriguing stories about life in Cassadaga, as well as a sixth sense ($50 for a half-hour session). There’s also a hotel in town .

Combine a look into your future with a glimpse at Orlando’s past: The Downtown Orlando Historic District is full of grand old mansions that offer a glimpse of how things used to be. This self-guided walking tour will let you explore all the best landmarked properties at your own leisurely pace.

Dali Museum in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Florida

Is there anywhere that captures the essence of Florida more completely than St. Pete? It’s relaxed, rimmed by gorgeous beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, and resolutely determined to let any visitors shuck off their worries within minutes of arriving. If you haven’t decompressed over the four-hour drive, make for Paradise Grille immediately, where you’ll find dinner, ice-cold drinks, and acoustic music. Spend the rest of the day at Honeymoon Island or Caldesi Island State Parks, two of the area’s best waterfront spots. There’s another side to the city, too: The Dalí Museum , a longtime anchor of the culture scene, was recently joined by the Imagine Museum, which showcases the studio glass movement of the 1960s.

Key West, Florida

The so-called Conch Republic has made its name as a kooky hideaway for America’s eccentrics—it even declared independence from the U.S. for a few days in 1982. It retains that offbeat, end-of-world appeal thanks to enduring sights like BO’s Fish Wagon, a bar on the waterfront that could be mistaken for a junkyard; but the last decade has seen a major upgrade in the accommodations on offer here. Try The Reach , the adult-aimed sister spot to the Waldorf Astoria located next door, which has its own private beach. Walk over to the Bahamian Village, with its ice cream-colored cigar makers’ cottages, and spend a lazy brunch (heck, the whole afternoon) al fresco at Blue Heaven , surrounded by its flock of resident chickens.

The Everglades

The Everglades, Florida

It takes barely an hour to hit the entrance of Everglades National Park from Miami, an almost 4 million-acre swampy prairie filled with rare crocodiles and dozens of remarkable birds. Skip the most popular route along the Tamiami Trail, and instead duck in just past Homestead at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center entrance , which is the best way to reach Flamingo , the only settlement actually inside the park. From there, it’s a windy, 40-minute drive south to the tip of the Everglades. There are trails en route—Nine Mile Pond is a canoeing trail even newbies can manage—before you hit the 19th-century settlement, named after the pink birds that flock here (likely not actually flamingos, but  roseate spoonbills, though that’s not quite as snappy a placename).

Take boat tours of the backcountry from the marina in Flamingo, or book a houseboat to get some sleep and keep exploring the next morning. Just remember to wear long pants and pack industrial-strength bug spray in abundance—the mosquitoes can be a menace here, year-round.

From Dallas

Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma

Chickasaw Country, Oklahoma

​​Drive just two and a half hours and cross state lines to explore one of the most noteworthy Native American areas in the U.S. It was here, in South Central Oklahoma, that the Chickasaw Tribe relocated after being forcibly driven from their ancestral lands near the Lower Mississippi in the 1830s. In the almost 200 years since, they’ve established a new homeland in Chickasaw Country, including an impressive center to learn about their culture, where there are artifacts, stomp dance performances, and a historically accurate recreation of a village from the 1700s.

Stay at the Chickasaw-operated Artesian Hotel , with views out across the countryside, and be sure to pack your hiking boots. The Chickasaw National Recreation Area is Oklahoma’s oldest national park area, with plenty of activities for travelers: It has plenty of short and easy trails like Bison Pasture and Veterans Lake, as well as superb fishing in the manmade Lake of the Arbuckles, with catfish, perch, and bass in abundance.

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg and wine country, Texas

Fredericksburg is the best base for exploring Texas wine country , just over a four-hour drive from Dallas . A 14,000-square-mile stretch with more than 30 wineries, it’s the second largest wine region in America after Napa. Bending Branch, south of town, is known for its vintages of Tannat, a grape that thrives in the hot, dry climate. Don’t miss the chance to stroll around the charming, historic downtown founded in the 1840s by a Prussian baron—stay at the Hoffmann Haus , a German-inflected B&B, to feel the history.

Round Top, Texas

If whimsy were a place, it would be this offbeat town three hours south of Dallas . It becomes an antiquing hub each spring, luring 200,000 or more shoppers to browse the bric-a-brac, but there’s also superb shopping year-round at stores like the 1920s-era farmhouse Townsend Provisions . Hotel Rancho Pillow is the mascot for Round Top, a riot of bohemian color where owner Sheila Youngblood rents an eclectic assortment of accommodations on her 20-acre homestead. Ask about the sheet-rocked teepee, and try riding the mechanical bull if you dare.

Palo Duro, Texas

This, the second largest canyon in America after the Grand Canyon , is a suitably epic Panhandle destination about a six-hour drive from Dallas. It’s worth every minute on the road once you’re standing by the 120-mile gash in the earth that plunges almost 1,000 feet. Come to hike, bike, and ride horses; there are almost 90 miles of trails in the state park, with the most popular runs located along the floor of the canyon. Offset the exertion by hunkering down at one of the chic cabins at Dove’s Rest , with a superb view out across the canyon proper. Each cabin has a propane grill and fire pit so you can BBQ each night under the stars.

We adore Boston, and I love writing detailed travel itineraries–so you’d think this 2 days in Boston itinerary would have been fairly easy to write, right?

As it turns out, a full summer of living in and exploring Boston in-depth with the intention of blogging about it resulted in having more favorite things to do in Boston than can be squeezed into a 2 day Boston itinerary–but lots of research and writing later, I’ve managed to whittle down the best of Boston into a 48 hour Boston itinerary.

From someone who spent three months living there and fell head-over-heels for the city despite assuming that wouldn’t happen, here is everything we recommend you do–plus all the logistics you need to know–to pull of the perfect 2 days in Boston.

Delicious food, literary interests, American history, pretty neighborhoods, penguins, and more can all be covered with just 2 days in Boston–but fair warning, your feet might be a bit sore at the end!

Start your morning in the Boston Public Garden.

The Boston Public Garden is one of our favorite places in the city: quiet and beautiful, it’s a great place to relax, take a walk, and enjoy a bit of peace in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Be sure to check out the Make Way for Ducklings Statue, put in place for the famous children’s book that features Boston, while you’re there! If you’d like to enjoy views of the Boston Public Garden from the water, the swan paddle boats in the garden’s pond are famously inexpensive at $3.00/ride.

Head to Back Bay for brunch & beautiful houses.

Back Bay is one of Boston’s trendiest addresses: here is where you’ll find stunning mansions, high-end shopping, and the occasional burst of surprising quirkiness (like The Fairy Shop, which features oodles of Harry Potter memorabilia and makes my inner eleven-year-old quake with joy).

Commonwealth Avenue

Some of the most fashionable addresses in Boston can be found on Commonwealth Avenue: stretching into Back Bay from its endpoint at the Boston Public Garden, don’t miss the chance to walk down this stunning street and gawk at the beautiful homes.

Boston Public Library

In addition to being exquisitely beautiful, bibliophiles across the USA owe a debt of gratitude to the Boston Public Library for its continuing advances forward: it was the first publicly funded library, the first library to open additional branches, the first to lend books out, and more recently, the first to install free wifi.

In other words, they’re pretty cool (and the reading room is a must-see during 2 days in Boston).

Trinity Church

One of the most beautiful churches in Boston, this 19th-century church sticks out amongst the more modern feel of Back Bay.

Peruse Brattle Bookshop.

As a book lover, I can’t write a 2 days in Boston itinerary without including the epic Brattle Bookshop!

Dating back to the 19th century and specializing in used and rare books, Brattle Bookshop is located just off Boston Common and includes three stories and–my favorite–an outdoor courtyard stuffed to the brim with books.

Even if you don’t make it inside, the courtyard is worth seeing: it boasts hundreds of inexpensive, used books (perfect for a cheap souvenir!) and enormous murals that climb the courtyard walls.

Stroll through Boston Common & enjoy views of the Massachusetts State House.

Boston Common is the heart and soul of Boston: within a few minutes walk you can be in Beacon Hill, Back Bay, at the Massachusetts State House, at the theatre, shopping at Downtown Crossing (this is where you’ll find all the standard chain stores), or exploring a piece of American history.

The park is gorgeous to walk through–be sure to stop by the carousel and to take in the views of the gold-domed Massachusetts State House while you’re there!

Pay a visit to Beacon Hill.

Beacon Hill is my favorite neighborhood to explore in Boston.

This is the Boston you see on postcards: redbrick mansions, black shutters, a cobblestone path or two, tree-lined streets.

It is absolutely stunning to wander through–we recommend walking from Boston Common up to Louisburg Square, which boasts some of the most prestigious addresses in Boston (former Secretary of State John Kerry lives here), and then taking a quick stroll to Acorn Street to take advantage of one of Boston’s most photogenic spots.

Visit Park Street Church & Granary Burying Ground.

After enjoying a bit of time in Beacon Hill, head back down to Boston Common and pay a visit to the Park Street Church and Granary Burying Ground, which are right next door to the Common.

You’ll notice a large monument with a very familiar name in Granary Burying Ground: Benjamin Franklin’s parents are buried here, and a monument to the family is erected toward the center of the cemetery.

Stop by King’s Chapel & Burying Ground.

The King’s Chapel is my favorite church in Boston to go inside–not because it is ornate, but because it is so unique among US churches.

Built originally as an Anglican Church in the 18th century, the church has enclosed “boxes” instead of rows of pews. Originally, prominent families who were members of the church would have a box of their own that they would sit in each Sunday.

The King’s Chapel still has an active congregation–but these days, instead of Anglicans, Unitarians call the chapel home.

Eat the original Boston Creme Pie at Omni Parker House.

Think you need to make a reservation and sit down to a meal to eat the original Boston Creme Pie?

You definitely don’t!

The Omni Parker House has a small shop on the first floor selling the delicious cakes, and we recommend stopping to pick one up.

If you want to also try the original Parker House rolls (which are, in fact, delicious), consider planning a meal–home to one of Boston’s many historic restaurants –at the Omni Parker House as well.

Take a peek at the Old Corner Bookstore.

The former home of Anne Hutchinson has acted as a bookstore, apothecary, home, Boston Globe souvenir shop, diamond store, and now a Chipotle: talk about evolution!

The building is still worth a nod as you go by, though, and also happens to be set right across from the Irish Famine Memorial–a striking statue worth taking a look at during your 2 days in Boston.

Pay a visit to the Old State House & the site of the Boston Massacre.

As you wander your way through Boston on your way to the Old State House, be sure to note the Old South Meeting House along the way!

The Old State House and the site of the Boston Massacre that is right out front is the perfect final sightseeing stop on your first day in Boston.

As the oldest surviving public building in Boston, the Old State House has seen more than its fair share of American history: it was once the seat of the colonial government, then became the seat of the Massachusetts state government and eventually Boston City Hall.

The Old State House has been a museum since the 19th century, after more than 100 years in public service and a brief stint as a commercial building.

Begin in the Marketplace District.

Boston’s marketplace district is all about the food, so come hungry (just ignore the hideous city hall that’s across the street).

Boston Public Market

Looking for some New England specialties, whether to devour immediately or to take home?

Boston Public Market is the perfect spot for that: featuring exclusively New England-based products and companies, you can pick up anything from produce to donuts to crafts here.

This is one of my favorite spots in Boston–and not just because of how good the ice cream is!

If you’re lucky enough to have your 2 days in Boston overlap with a Friday or Saturday, be sure to swing by Haymarket (located right in front of the Boston Public Market) to check out a fabulous farmer’s market!

Faneuil Hall Marketplace

Made up of closely located Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, South Market, and North Market, this is the heart of Boston’s historic market district–and also one of the most touristy places in the USA.

While we definitely feel it’s worth stopping by during your 2 days in Boston to appreciate the markets and the history behind them (Faneuil Hall dates back to the 18th century), unless crowds, chain stores, and overpriced food are your thing, you won’t need to stick around long.

Stop by the New England Holocaust Memorial.

Right in between the Boston Public Market/Haymarket area and the Faneuil Hall Marketplace sits the sobering New England Holocaust Memorial.

It takes very little time to walk through–no line, no entrance fee–but is absolutely worth taking a moment to slow down and appreciate.

Head into the North End.

Boston’s North End (also known as “Little Italy”, though you won’t catch a local calling it that) is the oldest neighborhood in Boston and a fascinating sort of place: once a neighborhood popular with Italian immigrants, today it is more popular with tourists.

It’s home to tons of Italian food (from the very good to the very bad), beautiful architecture, several noteworthy spots in American history, and a couple of very famous pastry shops.

Paul Revere House

The oldest remaining building in downtown Boston once belonged to none other than Paul Revere!

Whether you head inside for a tour or simply admire the facade as you walk by during your 2 days in Boston, be sure to note this piece of American history sitting in the North End.

Old North Church

And speaking of Paul Revere…

The whole “one if by land, two if by sea” story? That lantern was said to have been hung here, at the Old North Church.

Copp’s Hill Burying Ground & Spite House

Boston’s second-oldest cemetery holds more than 1200 marked graves that include plenty of notable burials from the colonial era… but that’s not the only reason to visit.

Right across from Copp’s Hill Burying Ground sits the Spite House (also known as the Skinny House), which is home to one of my favorite Boston stories.

As the story goes, two brothers inherited land from their father. While one was away serving in the American Civil War, the other brother built a large home, taking over part of the soldier’s inheritance.

When the soldier returned home, he built the “Spite House”–incredibly skinny, and yet incredibly effective at blocking his brother’s view.

The legitimacy of the story is somewhat questionable, but it sure is a classic Boston tale.

Mike’s Pastry & Modern Pastry

If you’ve heard one thing about eating cannoli in the North End, it’s probably about how delicious Mike’s Pastry is.

If you’ve heard two things, it’s probably that Modern Pastry is better and more “unknown”.

Here’s what we can tell you firsthand: Modern Pastry is tasty, and the line at Mike’s Pastry was always too long for us to bother with (though we’ve heard from others it dies down sometimes–if you visit in the offseason, you might get lucky!).

Regardless of where you choose to get one, we do certainly recommend eating a cannoli or two during your 2 days in Boston.

Pay a visit to the penguins at the New England Aquarium.

The New England Aquarium is one of the best aquariums we have ever been to there’s a huge emphasis on conservation, the exhibits are striking and education-focused, and the aquarium’s location on the harbor means that it is even able to use the natural seawater for some of its exhibits!

Though the five-story ocean tank, complete with an ancient sea turtle named Myrtle, is incredible, the real showstopper for us is the penguins.

We adore penguins, and the New England Aquarium is home to several species.

If you want to see something truly adorable, visit the aquarium at 9:00am or 2:30pm–aka penguin feeding time.

Want to avoid waiting? Purchase a  skip-the-line aquarium ticket  before you get there!

Take a stroll along the Harborwalk.

At around 43 miles long, you definitely won’t see even a quarter of the Harborwalk with only 2 days in Boston–but this continuous trail along Boston’s coastline is definitely worth checking out for a little bit.

Luckily, the New England Aquarium is located right on it, making it easy to go for a walk before or after your visit.

Enjoy the sunset from the water with a harbor cruise.

The perfect end to a 2 day Boston trip isn’t in Boston at all–it’s in the water, staring back at the city that boasts one of my favorite skylines in the world.

We recommend taking a harbor cruise around sunset to enjoy the end of the day–cruises are available at literally all price points, from a basic group cruise in a shared boat to a private sailing experience complete with dinner and wine.

For a less expensive harbor cruise,  this sunset cruise  is a great option!

If you know one thing about Boston, it’s probably the Freedom Trail: the famous 2.5-mile trail covers 16 historical sights related to American history in Boston, and is easily one of the most popular things to do in the city.

So don’t worry–it’s definitely on the list!

In fact, 14 of the 16 sights on the Freedom Trail are covered in this 2 days in Boston itinerary, including Boston Common, Park Street Church, King’s Chapel, Faneuil Hall, every historical sight I discuss in the North End, and more.

If you follow this Boston itinerary on your weekend in Boston, you’ll spend quite a bit of time walking the Freedom Trail, and you’ll have tons of opportunities to check out the brick markings that denote where it leads!

Rather than simply list something so vague and malleable on our 2 days in Boston itinerary, though, we wanted to be sure to give specific suggestions–after all, the trail can be seen in any order and doesn’t need to be done all at once.

Cheesy? Yes.

Entertaining? Absolutely.

Boston’s Duck Tours are famous for the unmistakable truck-slash-boat contraptions that they cart tourists around in by both land and sea. Corniness aside, if you’re looking for an excellent way to get an overview of Boston’s most famous sights and history without too much walking a Duck Tour might be the right choice for you!

The tours do sell out, especially in the summer, so be sure to book in advance if you want to make a Duck Tour part of your 2 days in Boston itinerary!

With only 2 days in Boston, we recommend staying somewhere close to a metro that is near the center of the action.

The North End is a tempting option, but it is fairly difficult to get in and out of. We’d recommend staying somewhere in Back Bay or the Historic Downtown if possible. The Theatre District (near Downtown Crossing and Chinatown) is another solid option with a great central location.

If budget is an issue, you may need to go a bit further out. That’s not a problem–just make sure you’re within walking distance of a metro stop!

Here are a few budget-to-midrange (Boston is expensive, there’s no getting around it) hotels that we would consider if we were staying in Boston today:

• The Copley House – Back Bay
• Boston Park Plaza – Theater District

If you’re on a strict budget and are open to a hostel, Boston does have a few to choose from.

This one tends to be rated highly:

• HI Boston Hostel – Theater District/Chinatown

The Boston Go Card is promoted as an all-access pass, allowing you to buy several Boston attractions at once.

With this 2 days in Boston itinerary, you won’t need it: the 2-day pass won’t allow you to break even or get ahead with the attractions listed here.

However, if you’re staying in Boston longer, or you are interested in participating in a Hop On/Hop Off bus tour, completing a Fenway Park tour, visiting the Skywalk Observatory, or visiting several museums, then the Boston Go Card is probably the right option for you.

Boston is full of things to do: even after 3 months in the city, we still left with a to-do list longer than we would have liked.

If you’re lucky enough to have more than 2 days in Boston, consider visiting Revere Beach (it’s the oldest public beach in the USA!), touring the Samuel Adams Brewery, attending a Boston Red Sox game (or just touring Fenway Park, the oldest baseball stadium in the USA), taking a walk along the Charles River Esplanade, or heading out a bit farther along the Freedom Trail to take in the two remaining sights not covered on this itinerary, the USS Constitution and the Bunker Hill Memorial.

If you’re a museum fan, Boston has enough to keep you occupied for months: for example, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is built in the form of a Venetian palace, holds gorgeous artwork, and is the victim of a heist .

For science lovers, the home of MIT and Harvard has you covered: the Boston Science Museum and MIT Museum are both worthy of a visit.

With time to plan in advance, consider going stargazing at the Coit Observatory.

If you’re visiting in the summer, a visit to the Harbor Islands is always a good idea for nature lovers.

I could keep going forever, but suffice it to say: you can do a lot with only 2 days in Boston, but you can’t do it all!

We are far from experts on Boston cuisine (in fact, we tried to cook at home as much as we could convince ourselves to during our 3 months there), but we did end up having some truly stellar meals while in Boston.

Here are a few of the places we enjoyed–consider adding a couple to your 2 days in Boston itinerary!

Buttermilk & Bourbon — Commonwealth Avenue (Back Bay)

I love biscuits.

More than that, I love southern biscuits, and I’ve been eating them all my life, in North Carolina and beyond.

So when I say that Buttermilk & Bourbon serves southern-style biscuits so delicious that I still think of them fondly a year later, I really mean it.

All of the food we had was incredible, and we can’t recommend their brunch enough (and I assume lunch and dinner are fabulous as well).

Neptune Oyster — Salem Street #1 (North End)

I’m not a huge oyster fan, but Jeremy sure enjoyed these (and the lobster roll he happily consumed after downing the oysters).

A friend of ours took us here when she came to visit us in Boston, touting it as one of her favorite restaurants–and judging by the fact that she looked to be having almost a religious experience the entire time she was eating their oysters, it’s a well-earned spot on her list.

As the resident non-oyster eater, I can attest that their burger was delicious.

Ristorante Euno — Salem Street (North End)

Many Italian restaurants in the North End are duds.

Ristorante Euno is not one of them–in fact, this is the only restaurant in the USA we have eaten in that even begins to approximate having dinner in Italy.

We ate here with a big group and had the opportunity to taste everything from several kinds of pasta to veal to steak to we-stopped-counting-at-some-point amounts of wine, and it was all delicious.

Tatte Bakery and Cafe — Charles Street (Beacon Hill)

Tatte Bakery & Cafe has several locations around Boston, but the Beacon Hill location is easy to reach as part of your 2 days in Boston itinerary!

Home to delicious sweets, tasty sandwiches (I had a brie and prosciutto sandwich that was incredible), and pastries that look too beautiful to eat, Tatte Bakery is a great place for a snack or quick lunch while you’re running around trying to see Boston in 2 days.

Bell in Hand Tavern — Union Street (Marketplace District)

America’s oldest tavern has been pouring ale since 1795, so you’d assume that puts them at risk of being gimmicky with mediocre food, but nope!

We never had a bad dish at Bell in Hand Tavern, and their burgers are incredible.

If you’re hungry while in the marketplace district, this is the stop for you!

Pomodoro — Hanover Street (Brookline Village)

This one is located out in our old stomping grounds of Brookline Village–and quite honestly, with only 2 days in Boston, I doubt you’ll make it out there.

If you’re staying longer, though, I can’t recommend a wander through Brookline Village enough (it’s adorable!), and would definitely suggest adding in a stop at Pomodoro while you’re there.

We had one of our best meals of the summer at Pomodoro, and I would love to visit again and soak up all their delicious Italian food and wine.

There is a catch: they only take cash, so come prepared or be ready to march to the ATM down the street once you finish eating (we may or may have had to do this).

Union Oyster House — Union Street (Marketplace District)

Right across the street from America’s oldest tavern sits America’s oldest restaurant, which has been serving up seafood (and especially New England chowder) since 1826.

We didn’t eat here personally, and reviews are mixed–some say the food is excellent, some say it is just okay. Most agree that you’re paying a bit more to eat at a historical location, which is not surprising.

Regardless of the ups and downs, though, I couldn’t bear to leave it off–even if you just snap a photo of the exterior as you walk by on the Freedom Trail, it’s worth being aware of this landmark during your 2 days in Boston.

Parker’s Restaurant at Omni Parker House — School Street (Historic Downtown)

I’ll admit: the main dishes here were good-not-great for the prices they charge… but gorging ourselves on the original (and delicious) Parker House Rolls and Boston Creme Pie made us glad we experienced the food once.

If you want to try out Parker’s House, we recommend going for lunch or brunch to keep costs down a bit.

Dunkin’ Donuts — Literally Everywhere

Okay, this is (mostly) on here as a joke–but okay donuts and subpar coffee aside, there’s no denying that Dunkin’ Donuts is a true Boston experience.

Boston is consistently rated as one of the most walkable cities in the USA and is also home to one of the densest public transportation networks in the country.

During our 3 months in Boston, we relied exclusively on the subway, the occasional bus, and our feet to get around the city, and we recommend you do the same during your 2 days in Boston.

There are two ways to buy tickets to the metro system: with a CharlieCard (which is free and reloadable), and individually.

The CharlieCards can be picked up from any attendant in the subway stations, but they aren’t always available.

It’s an extra $0.50/ride to purchase a ticket without a CharlieCard, and with only 2 days in Boston, I wouldn’t worry too much about getting one.

Bonus piece of history: if you ride the Green Line of Boston’s metro system, specifically between Park Street and Boylston, you’ll be riding on one of the oldest metros in the world (and arguably the oldest one in the USA).

Yes, a train runs from North Station (which is essentially right next door to the North End, it’s a quick walk away) directly to Salem. It’s a commuter rail, so very dependable and easy to use. We visited Salem that way personally and had no issues–it takes a little over half an hour to get there if I remember correctly.

So glad you found it helpful, Milissa! Yes, the Harborwalk is also a bike path, you can definitely ride there.

You can definitely rearrange things to fit a Sam Adams tour in! As for what to cut, it’s completely up to what you guys most prefer–I adored the penguins, for example, but some people wouldn’t care about the aquarium at all.

Some of the sites, such as Faneuil Hall or the Boston Common, can take anywhere from a few minutes to get a quick look at to an hour or more of perusing it in detail, so there’s a lot of flexibility with timing built in depending on your tastes.

Beacon hill is a tough pedal up, otherwise biking is fairly easy, although bike lanes are inconsistent.

I’d personally prioritize the uss constitution. It’s a free tour and think they are going below decks again as they weren’t for a while during covid.

Sam Adams is a good tour, but I might recommend harpoon instead. It’s closer, is almost as old, and is still local.

One question… we will have a rental car and driving from Freeport, Maine. What is the best place to stay, B&B preferably, so that we can just walk from our B&B to all of these sites… and just leave our car at our B&B. Is that possible? I’m not familiar with any BNBs off the top of my head that would meet both of those needs–generally, if you’re staying close enough into town to be within walking distance of the sights, small BNBs will have limited or no parking available.

I’d recommend plugging your requirements into your preferred hotel booking site (we use Booking dot com), including parking as a requirement, and seeing if anything pops up in a central neighborhood.

That being said, you can also park (paid, but convenient) in the garage under the Boston Common, which is very convenient for sightseeing!

Great review of my beloved city!!! But… I’m not sure how you could focus on Back Bay and not mention Newbury Street–filled with some of Boston’s best shopping and restaurants. Also, since I am a local, we would never refer to the T (formally known as the MBTA) as a metro. Honestly, if you said “metro” to any Bostonian, we wouldn’t know what you were talking about. Lol. Hi Kate – loved the write up! We came to Boston in 2010 and fell in love with the town – and hence, have stayed on. If you ever edit the article – do please consider adding two great experiences: (1) that the Boston Library has one of the finest “afternoon tea” experiences in the world but has to be booked 4+ months in advance and 2) the nearby towns of Lexington (I live here) and Concord still have a ton of historical sites and ceremonies connected to the first revolutionary war… and are just 20-25 Min away at most from Boston Backbay.

I’ve had the Boston Library tea on my bucket list for years! One of my friends got to do it and raved about it. 🙂 Maybe next time!

The main thing will simply be to appreciate the foliage, which you should definitely see! I’d plan to spend extra time in the parks, burying grounds, etc, as they’ll all be decked out in color.

If you have a chance to take a day trip outside of Boston, apple-picking (and apple-cider-donut eating) is a classic fall activity with plenty of options close to Boston. 🙂

Salem is ridiculously crowded in October, of course, but it’s also an easy day trip from Boston, and arguably there’s no better time to visit than October! The whole town goes all-in on spooky season.

Would you recommend a hop on/hop off bus or the duck tour instead of walking? I’m wondering about steep hills, and stairs – things of that nature. Much of the route is fairly flat, but Beacon Hill in particular has very steep sections–I’d be on the lookout for that.

A hop on/hop off tour might be a great compromise between going alone versus a fully scheduled option like a duck tour, as you can walk as much as makes sense but also always have another stop fairly close by. That way, you don’t have to commit to an enormous amount of walking at one time if energy starts to wane.

With its pleasantly warm weather and thinned crowds, May is the perfect time to take a trip before the expensive summer season. Considering sights, weather, traveler sentiment and annual events (among other factors), U.S. News rounded up the best places to visit in May. Whether you're looking for an outdoor adventure in a national park, a quick Memorial Day getaway or a leisurely beach vacation , you can't go wrong with these destinations. Bryce Canyon National Park

When May comes around in Bryce Canyon National Park, the snow is nearly gone, which means the park's main road and popular trails are likely to be open. Highs are typically in the 60s during the day, too – ideal conditions for hiking and biking this Utah park's paths. Visitor numbers start to ramp up this month, but it's still early enough in the season that you're unlikely to have to jostle for a view at the popular Bryce Point, which overlooks Bryce Amphitheater, a landscape of otherworldly rock spires (called hoodoos).

This Portuguese island chain in the Atlantic Ocean offers a little bit of everything for active travelers, from geoparks and waterfall hikes to paragliding. Though the weather here is always a bit unpredictable, the chances of wind and rain are lower in May. The water temperature also begins to warm up for must-do activities like snorkeling or swimming with dolphins, and with fewer swells than the winter months, beginner surfers will feel more comfortable trying to hang ten. As an added bonus, the biggest festival in the Azores – the Feasts of Santo Cristo dos Milagres – typically occurs in May.

Travelers looking for a vacation filled with unique and heart-pumping activities should set their sights on Cappadocia. This mountainous region in central Turkey is home to a UNESCO-listed national park, centuries-old underground cities, ancient cave dwellings, magnificent rock formations and more. Plus, thanks to average temperatures in the 60s and 70s in May, activities like soaring high above the Göreme Valley on a hot air balloon tour and driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle past fairy chimneys couldn't be more pleasant.

As one of the warmest and driest times of year in Palawan, May welcomes travelers with open arms. Take advantage of the minimal rainfall by experiencing all of the outdoor activities and attractions that this Philippine island has to offer –spoiler alert, there are a lot. Spend time relaxing on Palawan's white sand beaches, island-hopping or even swimming with gentle whale sharks. Water sports are popular in this destination as well, from diving Tubbataha Reef to kayaking El Nido's Big Lagoon.  

Visiting Granada, Spain, in May is a no-brainer. Average temperatures in the mid-70s, blooming flower displays (at Generalife Gardens) and a full roster of events make this Andalusian city a must-visit in the spring. Día de la Cruz and Feria del Corpus Christi, two of the city's most popular celebrations, are both held in May, and travelers won't want to miss seeing Granada come alive with music, flamenco dancers and more. Save time during your trip for a guided tour of the Alhambra and strolling through the Albaicín neighborhood.

May falls within this Peruvian city's winter season, though you probably wouldn't notice thanks to its consistently mild temperatures (highs hover in the 60s). This month rarely sees rain showers, and you'll encounter fewer tourists at archaeological wonders like La Catedral – which sits in the restaurant- and coffee shop-filled Plaza de Armas – and Machu Picchu – a bucket list destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 50 miles northwest of Cusco. If you're up for a challenge, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This difficult trek through the area's towering mountains takes about four days to complete.

With 33 beaches, this eastern Caribbean island is a sun worshipper's dream, and May temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s are perfect for basking on its white sands . Spend warm days venturing to offshore cays, exploring fishing villages and watching yacht races during the Anguilla Regatta, typically held every May. Since this is the start of the island's rainy season, the weather can be wetter and more humid than the winter months, but visitors will be rewarded with cheaper accommodations. 

May is a great time for a trip to this seaside Spanish city before the heat and humidity become unbearable. Can't-miss architectural marvels to check out include Antoni Gaudí's whimsical Park Güell and the Gothic-style Sagrada Família. Budget time for visiting some of Barcelona's highly regarded museums, such as the Picasso Museum, and relax at Barceloneta beach before stopping at a nearby seafood restaurant for some of the best paella in the city. What's more, the city plays host to a number of events come May, including film and music festivals

Craggy coastline views, a world-famous aquarium and a superb farm-to-table dining scene draw tourists of all types to Monterey, California. Though temperatures here remain in the 60s for most of the year, rainfall drops significantly in May. Popular festivals also make this a great time of the year to visit. Come early in the month for the Pacific Grove Good Old Days Street Festival, which showcases local artisans and craft vendors, plus a variety of food booths. And near the end of the month, the three-day California Roots Music & Arts Festival celebrates reggae artists.

Visit Laguna Beach for a perfect sunny-and-70, laid-back beach vacation. May is part of this Southern California town's spring shoulder season, so you'll find fewer people on popular stretches of sand like Main Beach and Crescent Bay Beach. Plus, the quieter month is ideal for relaxation-focused activities, such as outdoor yoga and hiking. When travelers need a break from reconnecting with themselves or nature, they can check out Laguna Beach's thriving art scene, which includes hundreds of galleries, studios and public works of art.

Bright turquoise water, gorgeous white sand and lush green vegetation await vacationers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Composed of 32 islands and cays, this Caribbean archipelago is perfect for a tropical getaway. May falls between the country's peak winter season and its hurricane-prone low season, making it an ideal time for scuba diving and snorkeling in the Tobago Cays Marine Park, swimming and soaking up some rays at Canouan's beaches and hiking to beautiful waterfalls like Dark View Falls. Travelers will also want to check out the country's 20-acre Botanical Gardens, the oldest available in the Western Hemisphere.

Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, sits on the southern portion of Vancouver Island. Not only does this Canadian destination boast comfortable highs in the low 60s in May, it is just a short ferry ride from Seattle (less than three hours), making it perfect for a quick weekend getaway . Spend your visit strolling through the 55-acre Butchart Gardens, which are bursting with colorful tulips and cherry blossoms come May, then get out on the water on a whale watching tour. Before heading home, don't forget to shop for souvenirs along Government Street.

Considered the birthplace of democracy and drama, Athens boasts a historical legacy that is hard to top. The main reason to visit is to see the ancient city's impressive ruins, which you'll find at the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. For an additional look at Athens' past, check out the incredible Greek artifacts on display at the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. May vacations are especially enjoyable thanks to comfortable daytime temps hovering in the mid-70s.

By late May, most of Yellowstone's trails and must-see attractions are open, welcoming eager nature enthusiasts seeking a breath of fresh air. The average 50-degree temperatures provide a brisk but comfortable atmosphere for a hike on one of the Old Faithful area's trails or a kayaking excursion on Yellowstone Lake. For a glimpse of wildlife, head to Lamar Valley to view wolf pups emerging from their dens. Keep in mind that if you visit during Memorial Day weekend, you'll likely run into crowds.

With warm weather year-round (average temperatures sit in the 80s), there's never a bad time to visit Singapore. But in May, this Asian city-state on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula welcomes events such as the Singapore Cocktail Festival, the Singapore International Festival of Arts and the Singapore HeritageFest. When you're not enjoying your time at one of Singapore's cultural events, check out top attractions like Gardens by the Bay, a futuristic nature park that is home to the Supertree Observatory and the Cloud Forest.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Two Kansas women who vanished as they tried to pick up children for a birthday party two weeks ago were killed over a custody dispute involving a group of anti-government Oklahomans calling themselves “God’s Misfits,” authorities said Monday.

Their vehicle was found March 30 along a rural Oklahoma highway with ample evidence of a bloody confrontation, setting off a multi-agency effort to secure the children’s safety while searching for the women and avoiding more violence.

Veronica Butler, 27, and Jilian Kelley, 39, of Hugoton, Kansas, had arranged with the grandmother of Butler’s two children to meet at a highway intersection on the morning of March 30 and pick up the 6- and 8-year-old.

“This case did not end the way we had hoped. It’s certainly been a tragedy for everyone involved,” Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Director Aungela Spurlock said.

The four people arrested Saturday on charges of kidnapping and first-degree murder are the grandmother, Tifany Adams, 54; her boyfriend Tad Cullum, 43; Cora Twombly, 44; and her husband Cole Twombly, 50. All meet regularly with several others in a group they call “God’s Misfits,” their arrest affidavits said. Relatives of Tad Cullum and the Twomblys did not immediately return phone messages seeking comment. Tifany Adams’ stepmother, Elise Adams, said she had no information on the case.

Butler’s family found the vehicle just a few miles from the meet-up spot after the women missed the party in Kansas. It was a gruesome scene.

“Blood was found on the roadway and the edge of the roadway. Butler’s glasses were also found in the roadway south of the vehicle, near a broken hammer. A pistol magazine was found inside Kelley’s purse at the scene, but no pistol was found,” the affidavits said.

Investigators gathered evidence that the killings were planned, with Adams buying pre-paid “burner” cellphones to communicate and five stun guns at a nearby store. Her internet searches included asking about pain levels using the weapons, the affidavits said.

A teenage witness told authorities that Cora Twombly said that at one point, “the plan was to throw an anvil through Butler’s windshield while driving, making it look like an accident because anvils regularly fall off of work vehicles.”

The affidavits said Butler and Adams were in a “problematic custody battle.” Adams’ son was in a rehabilitation facility hours away in Oklahoma City, and Butler was allowed only supervised visits each Saturday. Kelley, the wife of a pastor in Hugoton, was Butler’s court-authorized choice to supervise visitations.

The Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals had directed a trial judge in 2022 to give the children’s parents shared custody. The ruling described them as “very young and immature parents” who accused each other of “inappropriate behavior and choices,” but said “the children are nurtured and comforted by Mother” and ”happy and excited to be with Father.”

Butler’s request for more time with her children and unsupervised visitation was likely to be granted at a hearing in April, Butler’s attorney told investigators.

On March 23, with a court date looming, Adams bought the stun guns. On March 29, Cullum used heavy equipment to dig a hole in a pasture he rented, not far from the meet-up site, the affidavits said.

Authorities wouldn’t say at Monday’s news conference where the bodies were found, but the affidavits said some of the “burner phones” stopped transmitting that morning in the vicinity of the pasture, where “a hole had been dug and filled back in and then covered with hay.”

It wasn’t entirely clear where the children were during the search. Adams told investigators that she had left them in the care of another couple on March 29 and 30; the affidavits said that couple regularly hosted the “God’s Misfits” meetings.

Authorities said the affidavits weren’t unsealed until after the children’s safety was assured. “We were successful. No shots were fired and the children were kept out of harm’s way,” said District Attorney George Leach III.

The four people charged are being held without bond in the Texas County Jail pending court appearances Wednesday, said Texas County Court Clerk Renee Ellis. Court records don’t indicate whether any have an attorney speak on their behalf.

“I don’t know a thing about her business,” Elise Adams said when asked about Tifany Adams. “All I can tell you about her is she was a wonderful step-daughter to me.”

OSBI spokesman Hunter McKee said the bodies’ identities and causes of death are pending a medical examiner’s report.

“This case is tragic,” McKee said. “You have two people who are dead and four people who committed an absolutely brutal crime.”
