gwalia ghost town. image tourism western australia

Discover Western Australia’s rich mining history in the ghost town of Gwalia, a settlement that grew up around the Sons of Gwalia Mine in the late 1890s and operated until the final whistle blew in 1963. The abandoned homes and businesses create a tangible snapshot of a vanished era and way of life. Step inside houses built of corrugated iron, timber and whitewashed hessian, peer through the windows of Mazza’s Store, where shoppers could buy everything from two pounds of flour to a length of fabric to make a frock for a dance at the State Hotel, and wander through Patroni’s Guest Home next door. The old mine administration buildings now house the Gwalia Museum’s large collection of objects, documents and photographs which show the history of the mine. You can stay in a luxury B&B which was once the home of the mine manager Herbert Hoover, who later became the 31st president of the United States (yes, really).

Follow the Pathways to the Rock self-drive trail, or book a day tour from Perth. There are walking trails and Indigenous tours to other rock formations, including Hippo’s Yawn, The Humps and Mulka’s Cave, as well as Lake Magic and the striking Salt Pond. Hyden also has a wildlife park and is known for pretty wildflowers in spring.

13. Fremantle Prison

Built by convicts in the 1850s, Fremantle Prison was used as a place of incarceration for 136 years before being decommissioned as an operating maximum security jail in 1991. Visitors can now ‘step inside and do time’ on a range of tours exploring convict and prison life, daring escapes and colourful characters, in tales laced with prison humour. You can even descend 20m below the prison to explore a labyrinth of tunnels by foot and boat, or delve into the darker side of the facility’s history on a spooky evening torchlight tour.

A wonderful place for a family beach holiday is the Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef area.  We loved our holiday there and have got a few very useful posts to share with you. What is the Best Time of Year to Visit Western Australia?

As Western Australia is the largest state in Australia (geographically speaking the area is huge), the climate changes depending on what area you are in.  The best time to visit is purely subjective and really depends on what your interests are and what type of climate you are comfortable in.  The “high season” is usually described as October thru February.

However, as a Western Australian family we have found that there are so many things to do year-round.  As you can see in all of our suggestions below, there is plenty to do rain or shine.  With that said, Perth is actually known as the sunniest capital city in all of Australia for its average of almost 9 hours of sunshine per day.  So, there really isn’t a “BEST” time to visit Western Australia as it can be enjoyed all year round.

Western Australian Festivals and Events to Plan Around

There are some small regional festivals that are attractive, but otherwise, Western Australia doesn’t have major events that might affect the visitor.  Here are some public holiday dates to keep in mind when considering your WA family holiday destinations.

Some public holidays include:

  • January – New Year’s Day. and Australia Day which is January 26th.
  • April  – April 25th is ANZAC day
  • June – The first Monday in June is known as Western Australia Day.
  • September – The Queen’s birthday is celebrated each year on September 25th.
  • December –   December sees the observance of Christmas and Boxing Day.

Perth is Western Australia’s star attraction. Hailed as the country’s ‘sunniest' capital – and blessed by the lapping waters of the Swan River as well as miles of coastline – it attracts foodies, fashionistas and fun lovers alike. Visit Kings Park and Botanic Garden; the city’s splendid cultural precinct where you’ll find art galleries, the Western Australian Museum, and the State Ballet and Opera; head down to the beach to swim with dolphins; saunter down the King Street precinct for a taste of Gucci, Louis Vuitton and company; and if you’re into anything vintage, visit Guildford for some retro retail therapy.

Located just 30 minutes southwest of Perth, where the Swan River meets the Indian Ocean, Fremantle is a vibrant port city known for its bohemian atmosphere and impressive colonial architecture. While the West End of town is deemed one of the best examples of a Victorian port streetscape globally, the leafy suburbs boast countless magnificently restored 19th-century homes. Locals are proud of their well-deserved reputation for friendliness, eccentricity and creativity, which is expressed through their tireless support of busking, street art, festivals, concerts, and markets. With its thriving arts scene, lively nightlife, rich cultural heritage and seemingly endless opportunities for sumptuous al fresco dining, there is never a dull moment in this cosmopolitan city by the sea.

Mammoth Cave

Located within the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park 21km to the south of the town of Margaret River, the Mammoth Cave offers a great exploring experience that allows visitors to view the caves at their own pace with commentary and directions provided by an MP3 player and headset. The first chamber of the cave can be accessed with a wheelchair.

The cave features a wide variety of formations and is one of only a few caves in the southwest that contains fossils. One such fossil is the jawbone of the extinct Zygomaturus (a large animal similar to a hippopotamus) which can be seen in the wall of the first chamber. The experience ends with a short bushwalk that leads through the forest to the car park.

Let me start out with thank you!!! It was a trip of a lifetime, we can’t put into words the how amazing the experience was. Your work towards our trip was fantastic and we would be honoured to be listed as a reference for folks looking for a similar journey. You did a wonderful job relating to our needs. We had some really neat pictures of the Koala bears in the Daintree experience, our guide for the day called the outfit after we left and requested they email them to me. We are now home and back to the grindstone. The girls have informed me we definitely need to plan on another trip in similar fashion. Thanks again Mike & Megan and family.

Michael truly is the best ! Planned an amazing 20 day trip to Australia and New Zealand and we are just at the tail end heading home soon. Everything was just as he described ! A truly seamless perfect family holiday, tailored to our needs - thanks to Michael ! Don’t hesitate ... just contact Michael and then look forward to the best holiday ever!

Edina & Party – Family

We are a family of 4 and just came back from our NZ - Australia holiday organized by Guest New Zealand, which was a fantastic experience. All services, transfers, itinerary and accomodation was spot on. We were given a great price and saw twice as much for a much more competitive price than trips offered by agencies based in the UK. Michael helped us with the itinerary from the begenning accomodating all our requests. During the tours we requested minor changes to fit in with the timings and the adjustments were made imediately, so we felt being properly looked after also during the trip. I can only recommend this agency and would use them again in the future. Thank you Michael!

Phil Proser & Family Travellers

I contacted Michael via his website. I was quite apprehensive at first, placing my trust and money in someone unknown in another country to plan a trip for me and my family. Now i look back at our experience with Michael and i cant believe i had a concern at all. He is the ultimate professional, and he goes beyond the call of duty to ensure you have an enjoyable trip. We had a few things not go our way (lost luggage on arrival and some dodgy weather) no fault of Guest of course. Michael went out of his way to re-plan our trip on the spot, giving us advice, checking weather forecasts for us in advance, re-booking when required and keeping us informed whilst we were on the road. I can go on and on but the constant help he gave us was unbelievable. DO NOT PLAN YOUR OWN TRIP, leave it up to the expert...Michael Nees!

Western Australia family-friendly travel guide

About western australia.

Western Australia is big, every way you look at it.

It covers one-third of Australia – a massive 2.5 million square kilometres – and it is big when it comes to natural beauty and diversity of attractions.

In one part you can go four-wheel driving on rich red dirt in the Kimberley , while in another, you can ride some of the best surf in the country on idyllic beaches.

You can visit Australia’s hottest town, Marble Bar, or stroll along a tree-top walk in the cool shade of towering trees.

Helpful information

Where to go, best time to go to western australia, getting in and around for families, food and drinks that kids will love, electricity, safety and health precautions, most photographed spots.

In Perth, Australia’s sunniest capital city, there are many fantastic family experiences to enjoy. Visit Adventure World , Western Australia’s biggest water-based fun park. It incorporates lakes, gardens, an island castle and around 30 different rides and attractions for young and old. Spend a day at the amazing Whiteman Park , which is perhaps Australia’s best park with beautiful bushland, vintage tram and train rides, camel rides, sheep shearing, a motor museum and extensive cycleways or walking tracks.

The Kimberley

The Kimberley is remote and rugged, and although it’s three times bigger than England, has a population of only 25,000. That’s a lot of space for the kids to play in! The must-dos are to head into Purnululu National Park where you will be awestruck by the Bungle Bungles, visit the Malcom Douglas Crocodile Park , go for a cruise on the Fitzroy River, watch a movie under the stars at Sun Pictures, or swim at magnificent Cable Beach and look for pearls!

Broome is a place so magical that countless holidaymakers return year after year to enjoy its great outdoors. Visiting iconic and much-loved Cable Beach is a must and the beach is patrolled to ensure safe family swimming during the day. The stunning sunsets over low tide and easy beach access for 4WDs make it an ideal family picnic dinner spot. Cap off your visit with a ride on the beach-going camel train and take a camel selfie. Fossil discoveries are being made in the area with dinosaur footprints even being found in Broome. Imagining the prehistoric battles is easy visiting sauropod and T-Rex-style predator footprints, perfectly preserved in the rock and visible at low tide.

Check out our Broome and the Kimberley family-friendly guide here .

Fremantle and beyond

Not far away in Fremantle the whole family will love the Western Australian Maritime Museum , which is home to Australia II, some of our earliest shipwrecks and a real submarine, with kids welcome on the guided tours. ‘Freo’, as the locals call it, is also the departure point for the ferries to Rottnest Island . It’s a sensational day trip, with the kids sure to love searching for the cute little quokkas. The thing to do here is hire a bike (there are all sorts – some with child seats) and ride around the island.

Perhaps WA’s best-known attraction is Monkey Mia, situated in the beautiful Shark Bay World Heritage Area . Visitors still come here from all over the world to hand-feed the local wild dolphins. That would certainly be something special for ‘Show and Tell’! Make sure you visit Shell Beach and show the kids the oldest and largest living fossils in the world, the Hamelin Bay stromatolites.

Further north is the Pilbara, an ancient land over 2.5 billion years old. There are two absolutely beautiful national parks that will knock your socks off: the Karijini National Park with its deep gorges, waterfalls and welcoming pools, and Millstream Chichester National Park , as well as more than 10,000 Aboriginal rock carvings along the Burrup Peninsula near Dampier.

Mackerel Islands

Located a short boat ride off the coast of Onslow in the Pilbara region, Thevenard Island is part of the Mackerel Islands and an unsung treasure that was once a secret hotspot for hardcore recreational fisherman. The island is now beautifully established with new self-contained cabins dotted throughout the dunes. Setting off from Onslow across the glassy, warm water, there is action everywhere with whales, dolphins, giant billfish and tuna shattering the calm of the mirrored ocean surface. Buggies are waiting to deliver bags to the cabins and families need to bring little more than bathers to this wonderfully thought-out holiday spot. This eco paradise is completely powered by an emission-free solar farm and, if you’re lucky, you can find turtles nesting steps from the chalets and baby turtle hatchlings making their mad scramble for the ocean.

The Coral Coast

Western Australia’s Coral Coast has somehow managed to fly under the radar of major tourism over the years, but now the secret is out. Starting just under two hours north of Perth and running for 1,200 kilometres north to Exmouth, the Coral Coast is attracting more visitors than ever – from both home and abroad – due to its uninterrupted stretches of white sandy beaches, pristine private islands and coral reefs, carpets of Australian wildflowers and incredibly diverse marine life.

Check out our Coral Coast family-friendly guide here .

Perth’s own holiday island is Rottnest. Perfectly set up for bike-riding and exploring its 63 beaches and bays, ferries leave daily from Fremantle to take daytrippers and holidaymakers to the relaxed island named after its population of adorable native quokkas, which are Insta-famous. Accommodation varies from camping to luxury apartments with boating, fishing and snorkelling all popular activities. Segway tours are popular for those aged 12 and above and free guided walks take visitors into the natural quokka habitat, with joeys often seen peeking out of pouches from March to August.

Margaret River

A small town in the WA’s Southwest, but with a big reputation, Margaret River pulls large numbers of tourists from around the world to experience the best in WA fresh produce, some of the world’s greatest wines and surf that attracts world champions. Margaret River is a beautiful spot any time of year and the surrounding areas feature some of the state’s finest restaurants, farm experiences, forest walks, fishing and surfing.

Western Australia is divided into two regions with differing climates. In the southern half of the state there are four seasons – summer, autumn, winter and spring, while in the north there are just two – the ‘wet’ and the ‘dry’.

Perth boasts more sunny days per year than any other Australian capital city so sunshine is usually the standard order. The southern coastal areas of the South West region average a maximum of around 32 degrees in Summer, and 14 degrees in Winter.

The northern dry season (April-September) has long days of sunshine and blue skies and is the ideal time to visit the northern tropics. Temperatures range from 24°C overnight to around 34°C during the day.

The wet season (October-March) has temperatures in the mid to high 30s, high humidity and the occasional tropical storm.

Getting there

Perth International Airport is the major tourist gateway into Western Australia and Australia’s fourth busiest airport. Facilities at Perth Airport include a restaurant, bar and coffee shop, gift shop, ATMs, car rental, children’s playground, baby change rooms and internet and post services.

Commercial airports in Western Australia are located in Perth, Albany, Esperance, Exmouth, Kalgoorlie, Geraldton, Karratha, Broome and Kununurra.

Taxis and buses

Perth Airport is about a half an hour’s drive from the centre of Perth. Taxis are available outside the domestic and international terminals 24 hours a day. An Airport-City shuttle operates with convenient pick up points located near accommodation throughout Perth. A shuttle bus also runs between the airport and Fremantle.

In Broome, the  Broome Town Bus Service  goes to all the city’s hot spots – plus kids ride free.

Getting around

Driving is the best way to get around Western Australia if you want to visit the state’s more remote regions. However, there are usually long distances involved in getting between major towns and attractions so good preparation and a roadworthy, reliable vehicle are vital.

Because Western Australia is such a vast state, flying is usually the least time-consuming way of getting between major cities and also offers the chance to enjoy aerial views over the landscape.

Perth and Fremantle share a reliable and efficient public transport system and getting around is easy and convenient. The Perth metro area has a free shuttle service known as the Central Area Transit (CAT). There are also four train lines covering much of the Perth metropolitan area.

Ferry services traverse some sections of the Swan River, and regular high-speed ferries travel from Perth, Fremantle and Hillarys to Rottnest Island.

Western Australia is a gourmet paradise with a myriad of dining choices and locally-produced food and wine of the highest calibre. Sunny Perth is a wonderful location for al fresco dining and drinking, with more cafes per head than any other city in the world.

There are restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets, so head to the bustling centres of Perth city, Northbridge, Fremantle and Subiaco for a rich blend of cultural flavours. Local produce ranges from wonderful seafood like the famous WA rock lobsters to deliciously sweet tropical fruit from the state’s north.

The Swan Valley area and the South West are among Australia’s top wine-making regions. In between tasting some of the country’s best reds and whites you can sample locally made beers, breads, cheese and chocolates.

Where to shop

All major shopping centres offer the most on-trend, well-known brands that supply a mix of fashion and homewards. The most popular shopping centres include: Garden City, Booragoon; Westfield Carousel, Cannington; Centro Galleria, Morley; and Claremont Quater, Claremont.

Smaller department stores will have shops with unique items, perfect for buying souvenirs and keepsakes.

Tipping is not customary nor expected in Australia, though appreciated by service staff.

What to wear

Casual, lightweight clothing is fine for much of the year in Western Australia. Hats and sunscreen are absolutely essential for any season. Bring an umbrella. You’ll definitely need good raingear if you’re visiting the north during the wet season.

In the south of the state, a lightweight overcoat or jacket may be needed for winter. Remember that in the desert there may be blistering heat during the day, but night-time temperatures can drop to below zero. Warm, comfortable, layered clothing is a must when visiting outback Western Australia.

Electricity mainly operates on 240 volts at 50 Hz in Australia. If you have a device that does not accept these, you will need a voltage converter.

When driving on stretches of highway in outback Australia, be aware of the huge Road Trains which transport livestock and other goods to remote areas of Australia. The general advice to motorists if you see a road train coming is to pull off the road at a distance and wait for the road train to pass. Depending on the wind direction, the cloud of dust will prevent vision and hide rocks and other debris bouncing along in the truck’s wake.

Road trains can be longer than 10 cars and take longer to stop completely if you cut in front of one, so allow plenty of room before you attempt to overtake one.

The Karijini National Park

The Karijini National Park is a definite place to go to in Perth. The park offers activities like swimming holes and bushwalking with an accompanying view for the whole family to enjoy – leaving your insta-followers breathless. With every aspect of the park as a backdrop and the long list of things to do while you’re there, makes it the perfect destination.

The Pinnacles

Take a step back in time with a visit to the Pinnacles of Nambung National Park,  where incredible natural limestone structures harking back 25,000 to 30,000 years jut out of deep red earth. Formed from sea shell deposits and shaped by coastal winds, the Pinnacles are Western Australia’s most visited attraction with some standing as tall as five metres. Be sure to bring some bottled water and a hat with you on this aesthetic escapade as no drinking water is available inside the national park.

The best day trips from Perth

Looking to hit the highway for just a day or weekend? There are so many extraordinary options within a 90-minute drive of Perth.

Mandurah is just 71 kilometres from Perth and renowned for its magnificent beaches and estuary twice the size of Sydney Harbour. A relaxed holiday vibe and long stretches of coastline, water sports and wildlife watching make it an obvious choice for families. Home to a healthy population of dolphins, a visit wouldn’t be complete without an eco-certified dolphin cruise. You might even spot them while kayaking, canoeing or water biking. But the ultimate adventure for little ones is commandeering the local Pirate Ship, or at least a scenic cruise with pirate-themed entertainment.

Read : Mandurah is a hidden gem for families

Things to do in Mandurah

A small fishing town boasting mammoth white sand dunes and turquoise oceans, Lancelin is just 126 kilometres from Perth. Sandboarding, 4WDing, quad biking or dune buggy tours are available for those who want to explore the 40-metre dunes. Famous for kitesurfing, windsurfing and surfing with Back Beach offering consistent waves for all levels. Between Wreck Point and Lancelin Island, 14 shipwrecks have been found, some dating back three centuries and make for great diving. Littlies might prefer Lancelin Bay for swimming and snorkelling.

Just 38 kilometres south of Perth is the seaside suburb of Rockingham and 37 kilometres of stunning coast heaving with native wildlife. Soft sandy beaches with calm shallow waters for little ones and surf for bigger kids offer a dose of H20 fun. Kayak around the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park accompanied by sea lions and frolicking fairy penguins. Settle in for a picnic at Bell and Churchill Park or enjoy a guided swim with wild dolphins.

"Highlight of my entire trip to Australia!"

⦿⦿⦿⦿⦿ wildames365 from trip advisor, from the second i climbed into the bus to the moment i left, the trip was full of laughs, adventures, stunning sights and insider info thanks to our tour guide, the wonderful alan., the huge distances covered were well broken up with walks, photo opportunities and the occasional termite mound viewing, and we always got to the camp with plenty of time to chase the sunsets with icy beers in hand. waking up to the sound of waves crashing (and the odd pan crashing..thanks alan), and having a cuppa whilst watching the sun rise was one of the best experiences from my time in australia., the tour was wellll worth the money, with all meals being provided (delicious ones at that), everything ran very smoothly and i felt i saw everything i could’ve hoped to see up the west coast., thanks to the small group size we were even able to do spontaneous activities such as riding huge harvesters and partying at a farm in the middle of nowhere, snorkelling at coral bay was stunning and news has it it’s better than the great barrier reef. truly fab experience.., check out all the places we operate our tours, kimberley adventure tours.

Adventurous, enchanting and wild Western Australia . Far away? Yes. Worth the time it takes to get there? Absolutely. It’s home to caves, world-class vineyards, diverse and spectacular landscapes, amazing animals, stunning beaches and treetop forest walks. It’s where cliffs, perfect for rock climbing and rappelling, meet the seemingly endless Indian Ocean. It’s where the night sky is full of an awesome amount of stars. And the best part about it? Anyone at any age can enjoy a trip to Western Australia. We visited with a 1-year-old and 3-year old in tow, but this trip would also be great for elementary-age kids, tweens and teens.

A 10-Day Trip to Western Australia with Kids

The state of Western Australia is incredibly large. For your first visit to the area, we recommend you travel to the southwestern corner, starting out in the city of Perth, and heading south to the Margaret River Valley.

Perth and Fremantle (2 to 3 Days)

Start out by flying into Perth, the capital of Western Australia and Australia’s fourth-largest city. Upon landing at Perth airport, you can pick up a rental car (it’s best to make a reservation in advance) and let the exploring begin. We rented a full-size car that ended up being a wagon in nearly perfect shape, with an infant car seat that was also in great condition.

After your long flight, an excellent first stop to expel some energy is King’s Park — one of the world’s largest inner-city parks. King’s Park, mostly bushland, has stunning views overlooking Perth and the Swan River, wonderful walking trails, wide-open space for young ones to run freely and explore, children’s play areas, guided walking tours and a chance to stroll through the treetops on the Lotterywest Federation Walkway (entry is free and wheelchair accessible).

Perth has more sunny days than any other capital city in the world, which makes it perfect for going to the beach. Together with the adjacent town of Fremantle, or “Freo” as the locals call it, it’s home to some stunning beaches. The Indian Ocean is a sparkling turquoise blue in this vast, remote corner of the world. The white, soft, sandy beaches are great for playing, and watersports are plentiful in the more popular spots. We recommend Cottesloe (the area’s most iconic), Scarborough (beach surf school — fun!), Mettams Pool (great shallow-water snorkeling) and South Beach (white sand beach with rolling dunes, a kids’ play area and a great place to watch sunsets).

TIP : If you have older children, consider hopping aboard a 90-minute ferry from Perth to   Rottnest Island  for a full-day adventure of biking, snorkeling and exploring. The small island has spectacular beaches and spots to check out marine life. The island is also home to quokkas, adorable little animals that come from the same family as the kangaroo. If you happen to be in the area between September and December, migrating humpback and southern right whales can be seen in the island’s waters. Rottnest Island is truly unique, and your family will never forget spending a day there.

When you need a respite from the great outdoors, try out SciTech , a children’s interactive science discovery center in Perth. With everything from giant hands-on Rube Goldberg demonstrations to a baby chick incubator, this place has it all. It’s a great learning experience for the kids, and adults too.

Also, don’t miss spending time in Freo itself. This funky and free-spirited town with a side of immense coastal beauty is more relaxed and lower-key than Perth. During our time in the area, we opted to rent a cottage on South Beach in Freo, which was perfect for our family of four.

Bunbury and Balingup or Ferguson Valley (2 Days)

After you’ve had your fill of city life, hop in the car and head two hours south to the charming seaside town of Bunbury. Here, you’ll want to check out the Dolphin Discovery Center . With young children, you can tour the educational center, which showcases fish and coral aquariums, a 360-degree Digital Dolphinarium, cool fossils and more. The center offers 90-minute dolphin eco-cruises in Koombana Bay daily or, if your kids are older and adventurous, you can swim with wild dolphins in the open water of the bay (November-April). Finally, just in front of the Discovery Center is an “Interaction Zone” that offers a one-of-a-kind wild dolphin interactive experience on the beach, managed by volunteers. The most common visiting times are in the mornings of the warmer months between 8am-noon.

We also found fun beachside playgrounds for the kids in Bunbury and noshed at Nicola’s , which had a great children’s menu and delicious food.

If one of your goals is to spend as much time in nature as possible, why not entertain a stay in the countryside? Balingup Heights , a breathtaking bushland property tucked amid native jarrah and marri trees, offers six hilltop forest cottages, plenty of space for kids to explore and for parents to unwind, and true immersion into nature. The cottages are spaced out for privacy and have excellent views. Every morning, my kiddos joined owner/host Brian to feed the horses, guinea pigs and chickens (or “chooks” in Aussie-speak). Every evening, we settled into our cottage with a wonderful fire and admired the myriad stars from our deck. Another option in the area is   Ferguson Farmstay . They offer tractor rides, fishing, animal feeding, and a bunch of additional activities for the little ones. It is wise to book early!

Busselton (1 Day)

En route to Margaret River, don’t miss the seaside town of Busselton. It’s home to the   Busselton Jetty – dubbed the “longest timber-piled jetty in the southern hemisphere.” This is an excellent spot to play on the beach, dine on fish and chips, indulge in Simmo’s ice cream and ride the famous jetty train. At the end of the jetty, there is a 24-foot underwater observatory (tickets sold separately), where families can see an array of vivid tropical and subtropical corals, sponges, fish and invertebrates. Other seasonal activities in the area include whale watching, scuba diving, jet boating, canoe tours and more. And in typical Aussie style, there is an awesome playground for little ones right on the beach.

Margaret River Valley (3 Days)

And with that, you’ve come to the real prize of the region, the Margaret River Valley. Margaret River is, without a doubt, our favorite part of Western Australia. From caving to canoeing, camping, abseiling, surfing, bush walking, wine and much more, this place offers adventures for the whole family. If you like hiking, stargazing and exploring the great outdoors, Margaret River is for you. If you enjoy beautiful vineyard settings and great wine with a place for the kids to play, Margaret River is for you. If you love a good surf, Margaret River is for you. It truly has everything.

Here are a few activities we highly recommend:

  • Nurture your adventurous side and go caving and/or abseiling. There are so many great caves in the area (Lake Cave, Jewel Cave, Ngilgi Cave, Mammouth Cave, to name a few). As a teenager, I abseiled into caverns, crawled my way through tight spaces and rappelled down rock faces along the Indian Ocean. It was phenomenal. If you are traveling with tweens and teens, this is the thing to do, and is surely an experience they will always remember. With young kids, visit Cave Works , a visitors’ center that allows kids to learn about caves and try their skills at crawling through an artificial cavern. The visitors’ center is attached to Lake Cave. With children at least 5 or 6 years old, you can venture on down for a real caving experience.
  • Interact with and feed kangaroos, llamas and more at Sunflowers Animal Farm . This was a huge highlight for our kids — so much so that we went twice! Sunflowers also offers farm stays.
  • Lunch at  Yallingup Beach . It’s stunning. You will not be disappointed. And if surfing is your thing, this is the spot.
  • Satisfy your sweet tooth at the Margaret River Chocolate Factory . What kid would say no to that?
  • Meander into Margaret River Township for dinner and a trip to the local candy store.
  • Visit local wineries and breweries. Our favorite?  Cheeky Monkey Brewery . They have a fantastic, shaded playground just adjacent to the brewery and indoor/outdoor restaurant. The kids played, ate and played again, and all the while we sampled the libations.
  • Go on bush walks. Why would you not in this area teeming with unique wildlife and beautiful forests and coastline?
  • Visit the  Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse in Augusta.

We stayed at  Bussells Bushland Cottages , in Margaret River, which happened to be everything we were looking for: cozy, kid-friendly and privately situated in the bush, yet still only a 5-minute drive to the township. Every morning and late afternoon we went on a bush walk around the property. Each time we went out, we encountered kangaroos in their natural habitat, as well as beautiful birds (there was a feeder in front of our cottage that the kids could fill with seed every day). In the evenings, we built a fire and read our nighttime stories in the living room together. Perfection.

Pemberton (2 Days)

The final stop on your journey south is Pemberton (about a two-hour drive from Margaret River township). Pemberton is slower and quieter than Margaret River, but the bush is perhaps even more spectacular. The area offers a multitude of bush walks of varying distances and difficulty. Its karri tree forests are really special and shouldn’t be missed. Another classic activity in the area that younger kids in particular will adore is taking a   tram ride   deep into the forest.

We chose to do a farm stay in Pemberton at  Pump Hill Farm Cottages . If you have little ones, riding on a tractor-pulled hay wagon each morning to feed horses, cows, donkeys, chickens and ducks is pretty awesome. It was a welcome mix of entertainment for the kids and relaxation for the parents.

If you make the trip to Western Australia, you will create lifelong memories. I have been thrice: once as a teenager, once as a young adult and once with two young children. Each time carries with it a certain set of memories that are distinct, wonderful and exotic. My only problem with going is that each time I didn’t want to come back. Western Australia is a nearly untouched gem — raw and wonderful, natural, captivating and full of adventure.

Uncover the magic of Western Australia in a classic Aussie road trip of a lifetime

This post introduces all the important facts you need to know for organising a Western Australia (WA) road trip . We’ll be sharing with you in future posts about each of Western Australia’s amazing regions in much more detail.

  • Why visit Western Australia with kids

When is it best to visit Western Australia

  • How to get around Western Australia (psst did we mention, it’s BIG!)
  • Where to visit in Western Australia

This post is part of our Discover Australia & Oceania destinations series.

Why visit western australia.

Western Australia Road Trip with Kids | Family Travel guide with Our Globetrotters

I am going to put it out there: because it Is the best place to be in the World!!!

OK, I grew up in WA.  I am extremely biased as this was MY state, my little corner of the world.  It’s here all my formative ideas about travel, the outdoors and hitting the road grew.

Western Australia – referred to locally as simply WA – is often forgotten or simply left off peoples’ Australian itineraries as they are intimidated by the size, the ground to cover and the distances to get there.  However, I genuinely believe you won’t find anywhere else in the world where one state or territory has so much to offer, from wildlife to spectacular scenery – it’s the outdoor lover’s paradise.

Making up nearly a third of Australia’s land mass at 2.6 million square kilometres, it’s vast!!  Perth might be one of the most isolated cities in the world but one of the most beautiful and family-friendly.

If you can’t fit WA into an Eastern states trip, it is well worth making it into an outright adventure on its own.  You really need to allow yourself a minimum 3 to 4 weeks to “see and do it properly”!

Western Australia Road Trip with Kids | Family Travel guide with Our Globetrotters

The great thing about WA, due to all the different microclimates across the state, it is really a year-round destination.

Perth is a milder capital than many of its eastern state counterparts, but make no mistake, winters can be cold and wet! You still experience 4 distinct seasons, but the summers are long and the winters relatively mild.  On the hot summer days, temperatures are normally in the late 30’s to 40c+; this can be tempered, though, with the “Fremantle Doctor” – an evening breeze off the Indian Ocean that tends to cool things down at the end of the day.

If you are travelling south to Margaret River and Great Southern, you can normally take 5 degrees off the Perth temperatures – though winds and rains vary immensely across the state. Make sure you tune into local news channels for any extremes in weather, particularly if hitting the water or travelling during bushfire season.

The further you head “Up North”, you move through the subtropics to the tropical north – beyond the Tropic of Capricorn! Here you are faced with only two seasons, wet and dry!  The wet season runs broadly from November to March and brings with it hot, humid and unpredictable weather – frequently flooding. The dry season is April to October , where days are mild and nothing but blue skies!

It is best to travel outside of state school holidays if possible, only because every other family has the same idea as you and caravan parks and tourists resorts – ideal accommodation for road trippers  – can book up well in advance.

Here’s where you’ll find the WA state school dates for the coming year.

The benefit of travelling during these peak holiday times, though, can be a load more kid-friendly events happening both at your accommodation and in the small towns you might be visiting.

Note you also find a lot of “grey nomads” in Western Australia, retirees who chase the sun! They will head up north during the dry season and return down south for the summer; they make up the majority of holiday park residents during the non-school holiday periods.

How to get around Western Australia

Western Australia Road Trip with Kids | Family Travel guide with Our Globetrotters

Now let’s reiterate the size of WA – it is 2.6 million square kilometres  – bigger than 95% of countries in the world! But with a population of just 2.6 million (conveniently a square kilometre each!), most of whom live in Perth and the southwest, you can see there’s a whole lot of outback there.

If you are time-strapped, you can fly from Perth to one of the regional cities in the north, such as Broome or Port Hedland, though make no mistake, you will truly miss some gems if you do this!

You will definitely need to hire a car at some point to make the most of your journey. We suggest you try Discover Cars  or  Skyscanner Car Rentals  (yes, they do cars and flights) to compare prices for the best rentals (school holidays you can expect car prices to go up and vehicles of your choice to become scarce, especially if hiring from more remote locations).

When travelling with a full carload of kids and luggage, your best bet is to travel towing a camper trailer .  You can pick up really great value second-hand trailers from Gumtree for an absolute steal (and resell them at the end of your adventure!). By taking a trailer, you can save bucket loads on bringing your own accommodation and cooking gear with you, but unlike “all-in-one camper vans”, you can leave your trailer set up on-site while you go off exploring during the day.

Another lightweight alternative to consider is a car roof top tent . This is ideal if you’re only a small family and don’t have a tow ball on your vehicle.

You can see more of our road-tripping tips when travelling with small kids here

Where to Visit in Western Australia

Western Australia is broadly defined by six regions (depending on who you ask!).  Here we’ve got the highlights of what you can expect in each and some useful further reading.

Greater Perth

western australia family tours

Undoubtedly for many of you, the adventure is likely to start or end in the capital city of Perth unless you’re visiting as part of an around Australia trip.

The capital is beautifully set around the Swan River and renowned for its parklands and extensive miles of beaches.  It has a much more relaxed vibe than its eastern cousins, such as Melbourne and Sydney but a very modern feel.   There’s a real outdoors and sporting lifestyle which visitors should definitely take advantage of.

There are loads of day trips possible from Perth too such as heading to the hills and Mundaring Weir; take a ferry out to Rottnest Island; a boat to Fremantle or up to the Swan Valley; explore the many beachside suburbs or get to know the heart of the city better – Kings Park has a multitude of kids parks, walks and learning centres.

Margaret River Region

Western Australia Road Trip with Kids | Family Travel guide with Our Globetrotters

The home of fresh produce, unrivalled greenery and spectacular beaches.  Stretching from Busselton in the north to Cape Leeuwin in the south where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet,  its an incredibly popular weekender and school holiday destinations for families from Perth looking to escape the heat or get in touch with nature.

Its cool climate makes it one of the best wine growing regions in the world with over 150 wineries, most of which are open daily to visitors.  There is also an increasing number of family-friendly breweries popping up along with petting farms through to mazes, and an extensive underground limestone cave network – no wonder it’s such a popular destination!

Not to be forgotten too are the many wildlife experiences.  Hamelin Bay is famous for its friendly rays that come into shore and during late May to August its whale watching season in Flinders Bay. Margaret River Region is also home to some of the best surf beaches in the world!   The list could seriously go on and on!!!

The town of Margaret River is 3.5 hours drive south of Perth – avoid driving with the weekend crowd on a Friday afternoon though!

Albany and the South West

Western Australia Road Trip with Kids | Family Travel guide with Our Globetrotters

Spectacular beaches and stunning coastline; magnificent forests and marvellous fresh produce.  This is our ‘home base ‘when we escape the desert every summer so holds dear memories for us.  Just as lush as neighbouring Margaret River but too often overlooked.  The port city of Albany, set on the spectacular Kind George Sound is always bustling with activity and a superb place to base yourself exploring the region.

The beauty of this rugged coastline is its many hidden beaches and stunning state and national parks.  A drive through the tall timber around Walpole is a must with many small towns with rich histories to explore and try the local produce.

Esperance and the Golden Outback

Wave Rock Hyden | Western Australia Road Trip with Kids | Family Travel guide with Our Globetrotters

In terms of tourism probably the least visited part of Western Australia but it holds such a rich and important part of Australia’s history.

Visit Kalgoorlie, approximately 7 hours west of Perth,   for a taste of mining life and a tour through the state’s history;  be wowed by the world’s largest open-cut mine, the “Super Pit”.   An essential stop for many on the way to or from Kalgoorlie is Wave Rock near the town of Hyden, a natural sensation towering 15m high and 110m long – a photographer’s dream and a great kiddy playground!

To get a true taste of the region, take on the Golden Quest Discovery Trail which takes you from Laverton north of Perth over 900kms to Coolgardie, stopping at many dams, lakes, historic towns – including a ghost town, Gwalia – and Lake Ballard with its famous metal statues in the water, its claims to fame being the largest outdoor art gallery on earth!  It can be tackled in a 2wd with many sealed roads but a 4wd is recommended in case of adverse weather.

One of the most remote towns in WA is Esperance – a good 8-hour drive from Perth. Bremer Bay is famous for being home to killer whales that can easily be spotted during late January to late March, as many sharks, giant squid and whales.

Exmouth and the Coral Coast

Western Australia Road Trip with Kids | Family Travel guide with Our Globetrotters

Stretching from north of Perth to the town of Exmouth , this drive takes you through many spectacular changes in scenery from the lushness of greater Perth, particularly around wildflower season in the Spring, through to the amazing desert scape of the Pinnacles in Nambung National Park.

Next are the coastal towns of Geraldton, Kalbarri and Denham, before heading into the North West Cape and beautiful Ningaloo Reef before arriving at the stunning waters of Exmouth.

At the southern end, Cervantes is 2 hours north of Perth. The town of Exmouth is 15 hours from Perth – there are interesting stops along the way, but this route does involve a lot of long driving stints.

  • More on visiting the Pinnacles and Cervantes
  • Things to do in Geraldton

The Kimberley

Waterfalls in the Bungle Bungle Ranges

The remote, rugged and beautiful Kimberley! Wow! Every Aussie child, I feel, needs to spend some time in the Kimberley to appreciate the true Australian outback and vastness of the country. The Gibb River Road from Derby to Kununurra is no longer the dangerous pass it used to be in my childhood!

The largest tourist town of Broome is located on the coast, but you will get the most by touring around the region and basing yourself in the different country towns for a few nights each.

Attractions in the region include Winjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek in the King Leopold Ranges; The Buccaneer Archipelago and the astounding “vertical falls”; man-made lake Argyle; El Questro Wilderness Park (a former cattle station come luxury outback experience), the Bungle Bungle Ranges and the Mitchell Falls to name but a few.

Other important facts to know visiting Western Australia

  • British English is the main language, and distance is measured in kilometres.
  • The currency is the Australian Dollar (AUD) – ATMs are very widely available, and credit/debit cards are accepted almost everywhere – yes, even in the remote outback!
  • You may not get mobile coverage in all areas of the outback depending on which service provider you use – do check this before deciding on a mobile plan

The tour was excellent. Good direction at the departure site, great rhythms to the days of hitting all the significant tourist stops there and back, super lodging—AND best of all Lee, the driver/tour-leader. He is a star—affable/friendly, informative/knowledgable, hard-at-work in the background so all goes smoothly: ten out of five. I would definitely take another Pinnacle Tour.

Bremer Bay Orca Tours Finale 2024

Bremer Bay Orca Tours Finale 2024 Whale Watch Western Australia

Bremer Bay Orca Tours Finale 2024 today as we celebrated our final Orca tour for the 2024 season with Queen and her family pod. It was a day filled with much excitement and also a tinge of sadness in knowing it would be our final time with the Orca for the next fews months. The season has been a brilliant one with the Orca feeding very well over the summer and into the early autumn. Over the coming days and weeks the Orca families continue to expand their search range as they look further afield for prey and with fewer Orca pods in The Patch the sightings become less frequent. Today was a wonderful day to celebrate the season on as within moments of arriving in The Patch much loved matriarch Queen surfaced along with her family pod to greet everyone after being out of the area for over a week. A nearby oil slick indicated the family had been busy and successful in locating breakfast as we could see sharing of food taking place before they regrouped. Surging to the west the momentum was a thrill to be part of as the Orca surfed their way towards their next meal.

Surging continued for a good ten kilometres before the family stopped abruptly, regrouped and powered straight towards our bow before diving deeply. A minute or so afterwards another oil slick appeared on the surface and it was a good eight minutes later before the family resurfaced further ahead in a distinctive FLOT line. The pattern continued throughout the morning and into the afternoon as surging was followed by a deep dive and shortly afterwards a smallish oil slick would appear. The prey they were targeting looked to be either squid or fish that was being consumed efficiently and didn’t require the family to call everyone in after each kill as it was small enough to share with the nearest pod member before continue on to the next snack. It was wonderful to spend these last hours with Queen and her family pod with Alki and her family also joining in with the foraging activities as well. It was a beautiful day to celebrate Bremer Bay Orca tours finale 2024 with our Pod Members onboard, brilliant crew and wonderful Orca. Stay tuned for our end of season wrap up on the Daily Whale for this years highlights!
