The best time for a trip to Africa depends on what you want to see during your vacation. The temperature is warm year-round, but the seasons affect both weather patterns and animal migrations across the continent. Because Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, seasons are opposite those of North America—that means that during the summer months in North America, it’s winter in Africa.

July through October is the best time for a safari in Tanzania or Kenya, with cooler temps and animal migrations happening across the Serengeti and Masai Mara. On any tours around Africa, expect hot, sunny weather during the day and the chance for cooler temps at night. If you are traveling in Morocco and Egypt, remember to pack modest clothing that can keep you covered during visits to mosques or other religious sites. You may also want to pack lightweight rainwear, as occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons.

If you are packing for a safari, it’s recommended you wear muted colors to avoid scaring away animals. Safari luggage restrictions are strongly enforced to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort aboard safari vehicles. You will need to bring a soft, flexible duffel bag as hard suitcases are not allowed.

A trip to Africa is not complete without experiencing a wildlife safari. Safaris allow you to get up close to the wild animals where they live and feed. Luxor, Egypt:

Luxor is often referred to as the world's greatest open-air museum. Travelers have visited this city, parted by the Nile River, for centuries. Even the Greeks and Romans would journey to see the treasures that lie here. Its immense number of monuments is incredible. There’s the famous Valley of the Kings, which boasts 63 royal tombs, one even more elaborate than the next…and Karnak, a vast complex of temples and gigantic statues including the Temple of Amun, known to be the largest religious building ever constructed. Luxor will bring you back to ancient times while you are awed by the wealth of its leaders and the skill of its people.

Victoria Falls:

This powerful cascade is spectacular. At one mile wide and 360 feet high, it is the largest waterfall in the world and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa, the Falls lie along the Zambezi River. Game-viewers, bird-watchers, thrill-seekers and fishermen flock here to explore the Falls and surrounding pristine wilderness protected by the Zambezi National Park.

Covering over 3 million square miles of northern Africa, the Sahara is said to encompass a staggering 10% of the African continent. Scientists believe that the Sahara Desert has been inhabited since 6000 B.C. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Europeans are just some of its former residents. Today, the population is around 4 million and consists mainly of nomads who move from place to place as a result of the harsh conditions. Over time, the wind, heat and dry weather has created a tapestry of stunning landscapes that include sand dunes, sand seas (called ergs), barren stone plateaus, gravel plains and salt flats.

Located among the cliffs on the west bank of the Nile is the Valley of the Kings, home to the tombs of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom. The tombs were built here over a period of almost 500 years. Serengeti National Park

If you're enamored with the prospect of coming face to face with elephants, giraffes, zebras and wildebeests, then a safari tour through Tanzania's Serengeti National Park is the bucket-list adventure for you. The price will be steep, but a journey here affords an unforgettable African savanna experience. To save some coin, book one of the park's campgrounds instead of staying at a high-end safari lodge or luxury tented camp. Plan on arriving in January or February (calving season) or between June and October (dry season and prime migration time) for the best game-viewing conditions.

Outdoorsy types travel far and wide to admire this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site. Straddling the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Mosi Oa Tunya National Park, Victoria Falls is roughly twice as deep and wide as Niagara Falls, making it one of the world's most jaw-dropping waterfalls . To see this natural wonder at its prime, plan a visit in April or May when the region's rainy season has concluded. Popular vantage points include the Knife-Edge Bridge, Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool. When you're not enjoying the view from above, go whitewater rafting in the Zambezi River to admire the falls from a different angle.

Most tourists head to Tanzania to go on safari, but you'd be remiss if you didn't save time for the country's other must-see treasures. In addition to its animal-filled plains, Tanzania boasts otherworldly natural wonders, including red-hued Lake Natron, Ngorongoro Conservation Area's expansive crater and Mount Kilimanjaro – the tallest mountain in Africa (and largest free-standing mountain on Earth). For the ultimate adrenaline rush, book a climbing excursion up the continent's famous mountain through a local tour operator.

Mauritius appeals to vacationers in search of a bit of everything. Though its main draws are its powdery sands and luxe beach resorts , this small island nation east of Madagascar also charms visitors with its mix of cultures; friendly locals; lively festivals and tasty teas and rums. After a day of exploring some of the island's nature reserves and soaking up the sun, retreat to one of its premier properties to savor fresh seafood while watching a traditional sega dance performance or the sun set over the Indian Ocean.

Home to cheetahs, elephants, lions, wildebeests, hippos and more, Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Kenya's premier spots to see wildlife. Sign up for a safari to explore this protected area's 373,000-plus acres of rolling grasslands. (Tip: Look for companies with guides certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association.) For an extra dose of adventure, opt for a horseback riding excursion or hot air balloon safari. To increase your chances of spotting the big five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes) and other migrating animals, time your visit between July and October during the Great Migration.

Zanzibar offers something for everyone, whether you're in search of beautiful white sand beaches or an unforgettable adventure. After trekking to this Indian Ocean archipelago off the coast of East Africa, you'll instantly feel at ease as you lounge on quiet beaches like Matemwe and Kiwengwa. Next, visit UNESCO World Heritage-listed Stone Town, where you'll find the ruins of a 19th-century palace and a graveyard with ties to Zanzibar's former Arab royals. And no trip would be complete without taking a spice tour in the countryside and exploring Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. As an added bonus, you'll find this is a surprisingly cheap tropical destination .

A grouping of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles has long attracted those looking for a truly relaxing, off-the-beaten-path getaway. Spend your days lounging on pristine, crowd-free beaches like Anse Lazio and Anse Source D'Argent, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Or, head deep into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Vallée de Mai nature reserve to gaze at its unique flora and fauna. Keep in mind that lodging here is expensive (especially at the luxury resorts), so it's best to save up and book in advance.

With numerous hiking trails, miles of dramatic scenery and stunning beaches (including one with wild penguins), this South Africa hub caters to both adventurous and laid-back travelers. Getting to Cape Town won't be cheap, but your dollar will go far once you arrive. Make sure you take the aerial cableway up Table Mountain, visit Nelson Mandela's jail cell on Robben Island and explore the world-renowned Constantia Valley wine region. You'll also want to save time to trek through the Cape of Good Hope, which lies 40 miles south of Cape Town on the southern tip of Africa.

Cairo can be overwhelming, as there's so much to see and do everywhere you turn. From Islamic Cairo's bustling Khan El-Khalili bazaar to the ancient Pyramids of Giza to the picturesque Nile River, you'll be immersed in this Egyptian city's history and culture before long. Though winter offers the most pleasant weather of the year (with daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s), it's also the busiest season, so consider visiting in spring or fall when room rates are lower, temps are bearable and crowds thin out.

Like other historic Moroccan cities, Marrakech buzzes with life: Performers vie for your attention in Jemaa El Fna (an open-air square in the heart of the Medina of Marrakesh) while vendors hawk aromatic spices, homemade textiles, ornate lanterns and more at the bazaars along the alleyways. When you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, unwind at a hammam, visit the Jardin Majorelle or head to a rooftop bar and relax before retiring to your riad. During your visit, keep an ear out to hear the striking tones of the nearby mosques' calls to prayer.

You'll spot plenty of animals – ranging from lions to rhinos to elephants to giraffes – in this massive game preserve in South Africa. Kruger National Park's network of paved roads makes it easier to navigate than Serengeti, and it tends to be cheaper to visit. However, its popularity (especially from May to October, which are the best months for wildlife viewing) means you're more likely to encounter hordes of visitors during game drives. Consider visiting one of the park's private game reserves for a more exclusive experience, and to ensure lodging, flight and tour availability, you'll likely want to finalize your trip at least a year in advance.

The habitat on the island of Madagascar is unlike any other in the world: Most of the landscape is unspoiled, giving visitors a chance to see animals in their natural environment. Travelers should look out for the country's signature animal: the lemur. Madagascar is home to more than 100 species of these creatures, as well as 11,000-plus plant species, including majestic baobab trees. Some of the best places to see wildlife and Madagascar's geological wonders include Isalo National Park and Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve. Be sure to save some time to island hop to Nosy Be for its world-class beaches.

Despite its small size and landlocked location in southeastern Africa, Malawi draws visitors with its gorgeous lake, diverse wildlife and friendly people. At Lake Malawi, one of the deepest lakes in the world, travelers can enjoy water sports activities like kayaking and sailing, soak up some sun on a white sand beach or dive beneath the lake's surface to look for colorful cichlid fish. The tiny country also features nine national parks and wildlife reserves, making it an excellent less-crowded option for a self-drive or a guided safari. For the best wildlife viewing, arrive during the dry season, which lasts from May to October.

Adventurous travelers who dream of spending their vacation surrounded by nature will love Botswana. A less crowded alternative to nearby safari destinations like South Africa and Tanzania, Botswana has a strong conservation focus and offers ample opportunities to spot rhinos, elephants and more in protected areas like Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve, the oldest reserve of the Okavango Delta. Plus, adrenaline junkies can participate in all kinds of heart-pumping activities, including quad biking, mokoro (canoe) safaris and helicopter tours.

Kenya's capital city offers the perfect blend of urban pursuits and natural splendor. With museums highlighting its pre- and post-colonial heritage, bustling street markets and a thriving nightlife scene, Nairobi is a cultural hub. But its proximity to (and preservation of) wildlife is what makes Nairobi one of the world's most unique cities. The city boasts its own national park – Nairobi National Park, whose grassy plains host 100-plus mammal species including black rhinos – as well as wildlife conservation parks such as the Giraffe Centre and Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. On this one-hour safari, you will experience Africa in the heart of Arizona. This is an authentic African photo safari with expert park guides narrating throughout your Serengeti tour, which includes a trip through the park preserve. You can expect a personal encounter with giraffe, zebra, ostrich, and more. We provide treats so that you can feed the animals and maybe receive a gentle kiss from a giraffe. On nearby hills, prides of lions and other big cats overlook their domain, carefully watching you and the prey animals along the Safari route. It's like Africa, only closer!

Please note: At least one named pass holder must accompany children. Also, a named cardholder must be present for a guest using the Dual Guest or Family Plus Guest membership.

Do you have a caretaker? If your nanny, caretaker, or unnamed adult visits the Park with a membership card that does not have at least one named member present, the entire party - including unnamed children - will be required to pay for admission. For this reason, we suggest you name the caretaker as the third person on the Family Plus membership or as an adult add-on for any applicable membership.

Please allow up to two weeks to receive your membership pass in the mail. Each person named on the membership card will need to have their picture taken on the first visit using the card. If you lose your membership card, there is a $10 replacement fee.

All Park membership sales are final. All transactions, including gift memberships, are non-refundable and non-transferable. Memberships cannot be applied toward field trips and group rates.

African foods you simply must try

Spanning approximately 11.7 million square miles (30.3 million square kilometers) across 54 countries and home to roughly 1.5 billion people, Africa is a rich tapestry of history, culture, and ethnicities. For its part, African cuisine is very  diverse, with flavors and ingredients varying depending on the region. In West African cooking, you're likely to find lots of spices like ginger, garlic, and chili pepper , whereas East African recipes tend to use ingredients like coconut milk, cinnamon, and cardamom.

A tagine is a stew named after the clay pot in which  it's prepared . The stew typically features meat, vegetables, and sweet and spicy flavors.

Mealie pap (South Africa)

Mealie pap  is prepared by boiling milled white maize in water or milk. It can be served soft and sweetened for breakfast, or made firmer to accompany savory dishes.

Bazin (Libya)

Bazin is an unleavened bread made from barley flour, water, and salt.  It's typically served with meat and vegetable stews.

Zigni (Eritrea, Ethiopia)

Zigni is a stew made from meat, tomatoes, red onions, and berbere spices. It's usually placed on a plate of injera bread and eaten for lunch or dinner.

Banku (Ghana)

Banku is a Ghanaian dish of fermented corn and cassava dough, formed into a paste and cooked by steaming. It's typically served alongside okoro stew or soups.

Chakalaka (South Africa)

Chakalaka is a South African vegetable relish made with tomatoes, peppers, onions, and beans. It' s usually served  with grilled meats or pap.

Akara (West Africa)

Akara is a popular street food made from a seasoned batter of blended black- eyed peas, which is then deep-fried in dendê. For Nigerians, akara is part of Saturday morning breakfast.

Nyama Choma (Kenya)

Nyama Choma is grilled goat meat, which is considered a national delicacy in Kenya. For authentic N yama Choma, the meat is seasoned and sometimes marinated first in a mixture of onions, garlic, and ground ginger, with some hot pepper and lemon juice.

Haraimi (Libya)

Haraimi is a Libyan stew consisting of fish steaks in a rich, spicy tomato sauce. Some recipes add potatoes, though this is optional. Serve with a side of bread.

Matoke (East Africa)

Matoke, or matooke, is cooked and mashed green bananas or plantains. It is often served  with meat or vegetable dishes.

Bunny Chow (South Africa)

An Indian-inspired dish from Durban, Bunny Chow consists of hollowed-out bread filled with curry, typically lamb or chicken.

Ugali (East Africa)

Ugali is a staple food made from maize or corn flour, cooked in boiling water or milk until it reaches a dough-like consistency. Serve with meat or vegetable stews.

Zanzibar pizza (Tanzania)

Zanzibar pizzas are not pizzas as you know them. Instead, they resemble stuffed pancakes, filled with meat, vegetables, or even chocolate and banana if you'd prefer something sweet.

Shakshuka (North Africa)

Believed to have originated in Tunisia, shakshuka is a one-pan meal featuring poached eggs in a spicy tomato sauce, served with toasted pita bread. It's commonly eaten for breakfast.

Braai (South Africa)

A braai is typical South African barbecue that features a variety of grilled meats, often cooked over charcoal or aromatic wood.

Piri piri chicken (Mozambique)

Piri piri sauce combines African bird's eye chili, paprika, onion, garlic, oil, and vinegar (or lemon juice.) The sauce is perfect as a marinade for grilled chicken or prawns.

Suya (Nigeria)

A traditional Nigerian street food, Suya is grilled skewered beef, ram, or chicken marinated in a spicy peanut sauce.

Biltong (Southern Africa)

Biltong is dried, cured meat that originated in Southern African countries. Various types of meat are used, from beef to game meats like ostrich.

Injera (Ethiopia, Eritrea)

Injera is a  large,  spongy flatbread made with a fermented  batter of  teff flour, water, and yeast. Stews  are placed  on top of the bread, and the meal is eaten by scooping up the stews with pieces of injera.

Ndole (Cameroon)

Ndole is a Cameroonian stew made with ndoleh (bitter leaves indigenous to West and Central Africa), stewed nuts, and fish or beef. Serve with plantains or miondo.

Mafe (West Africa)

A hearty and flavorful meal, mafe is a popular West African stew made with a spicy, creamy peanut and tomato sauce. Beef and lamb are commonly used, but chicken and fish are featured in some recipes.

Couscous (North Africa)

Couscous is a staple dish in North African countries. It's made by steaming granules of semolina until light and fluffy. It's typically served alongside a stew.

Egusi soup (Nigeria)

Egusi soup is a one-pot soup that combines blended melon seed, pepper, leafy vegetables, and meat, creating a nutty, spicy, and tasty dish. The most popular way to serve the soup is to pair it with pounded yam.

Southern Africa Encompassed: Bush Camps & Wildlife Spotting

Absolutely loved this tour! Big shout out to Sohaila & Anas who were both fantastic tour guides. There were a couple of things along the way that could have gone a little better, but they were insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The sites included in the tour are all breath taking and somehow get better and better. I'd highly recommend doing all of the extras, particularly Abu Simbel and the Luxor hot air balloon. Accom was also much better than I had expected and sleeper train wasn't too bad either, surprisingly.

This trip was a great adventure for myself. I get to check another one off my bucket list, the pyramids, the Nile River, the ancient Egyptian history. The Tour company was very attentive to my needs. Quickly responded to text, questions, and desires. The accommodations were excellent much better than I expected. Unfortunately, I cannot give it an excellent review but it was good to very good. My Egyptian tour guides were super knowledgeable and very accommodating. I did struggle with their English at times, and also did not expect to be passed off from one guide to another throughout the trip. I thought I was going to be in the small group and be able to interact with other personalities. But I was solo which has his pros and cons. Full attention from driver and tour guide, but lacked the enjoyment of being in the group.

19-day Cape Town to Victoria Falls (Camping)

This was overall a really well run tour. Our guide Pilli and driver Kumu really put a lot of enthusiasm into the trip and made everyone happy everyday. This is a fast paced tour though with some long driving days - if you travel in winter expect some cold nights so pack a decent sleeping bag. Also winter means shorter days and longer nights, so some times we would be setting up camp in the dark and again departing before sunrise, but this wasnt much of an issue as the tents are good quality and after the first couple of goes you can have it done solo in mere minutes. Food quality on the tour was exceptional given the facilities available (cooking out of the back of a truck) All dietary requirements were met with ease and even after nearly 3 weeks on the road the variety just kept coming! The itinerary mentions having cash, however besides maybe 2 optional activities (wine tasting in SA and 1 game drive option) everything was able to be paid for by card without any surcharges. My only real gripe is with one of the camp sites (ZELDA) which was in utter state of disrepair and we had to ask twice for them to turn on the running water and gas to the showers (Which they only then did for the ladies block). The only other improvement I could suggest would be to stay in hostels in the larger towns like Windhoek and Livingston (like we did in Swakopmund) rather than the camp sites which are miles out of town.

What people love about Budget Tours in Africa

Bei der Reise wurden die tollsten Ziele aus Botswana und Zimbabwe und Südafrika erreicht. An Natur und campingmöglichkwiten kaum zu übertreffen!! Dennoch sind die Fahrtzeiten logischerweise recht lang, es lohnt sich jedoch jeden Tag wieder! Ich habe so tolle Leute kennengelernt, einige fürs Leben. Meine Gruppe und die Guides waren hervorragend. Ich würde diese Reise jedem empfehlen.

Our guide, Mina, was very knowledgable and helpful when you wanted to find specific things. The accommodations were great, the river cruise was fantastic. Do the trip to Abu Simbal and the Nubian village dinner, it's 100% worth it. It would have been nice to do a tour in Hurghada of the Museum (which is worth the 20 minute walk), the mosque and the church.

Why this rhino-zebra friendship makes perfect sense

The orphaned youngsters Daisy and Modjadji have more in common than you might think.

Whether playing ball, chasing and racing, or snuggling up together at night, Daisy the baby white rhinoceros and Modjadji the plains zebra are often inseparable at the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary in South Africa where they were rehabilitated. “You cannot believe how adorable these guys are,” says sanctuary founder Petronel Nieuwoudt of the two young animals she helped raise.

Modjadji, named after the local rain goddess, was found alone and suffering from tick-borne anemia in Kruger National Park after a heavy rainstorm. A few days later, rangers found Daisy. She was only about 12 hours old and still had her umbilical cord attached; she was also sick with an infection. Her mother was likely poached for her horn.

Left alone, these animals likely wouldn’t have survived. But paired together—and with the help of conservationists—the unlikely friends have a chance to return to the wild.

Young friends

Both species are able to stand within an hour of birth, but both white rhinos and plains zebras still require parental investment. Rhino calves stay with their mothers for two to three years, while zebras can reach independence after one year. In that time, the youngsters rely on their mothers for food, protection, and socialization.

Although these species don’t closely interact in the wild, Nieuwoudt placed the two orphans together so that they would receive the comfort they were missing from their mothers. She says the pair especially loved to touch each other while they slept. “It’s the feeling of, ‘Oh there’s another little breath next to me and another little heartbeat next to me,’” Nieuwoudt says.

Plus, the youngsters could teach each other how to play. “Play behavior is very important for building social skills, learning boundaries, and becoming physically competent,” says Terri Roth , a rhino scientist at the Cincinnati Zoo. Socialization with another animal at a young age “makes for a much more adapted animal as they become an adult.”

Protecting these peers on the plains

In the wild, rhinos’ and zebras’ territories overlap—both are herbivores that often chow on grass. “The use of the savannas by the white rhinos and the zebras is pretty similar,” Roth says. And these animals are both perissodactyls , a group of hoofed herbivores that includes horses and donkeys. “They are taxonomically more closely related than anything else.” This may explain why a rhino would serve as a surrogate buddy for a zebra, she says.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the plains zebras as near threatened , and their population is decreasing. Climate change is causing extensive droughts which make food and water less available to zebras, and they’re being pushed from their habitat as people farm the land.

White rhinos were once thought to be extinct, but they’re now listed as near threatened thanks to conservation efforts. The main threat are poachers seeking rhino horns. Made of the same material that makes up fingernails, horns are still used in some cultures as traditional medicine or for carvings. And though there are laws prohibiting poaching, they aren’t always enforced.

There are some skills both pals can only learn from their species. Roth explains that while a rhino will instinctively roll in the mud to get relief from biting flies, finding the locations of mud wallows and water sources is a skill learned from the mother. Daisy will need to learn this from other rhinos.

Modjadji will need to learn about herd hierarchy with other zebras, says wildlife veterinarian and Nat Geo Explorer Shaleen Angwenyi . These animals live in permanent groups with one male, up to six females, and their foals. They often travel in a line led by the dominant female and the rest following according to rank.

As they grow, Modjadji is spending less time with Daisy and more with her fellow zebras in a protected area. Nieuwoudt often spots her hanging out near the adult rhinos in the area, but Modjadji still sometimes comes back to the center for a quick nap with Daisy.

Meanwhile, Daisy continues to live at the sanctuary where they’re working to help her grow—she now weighs over a thousand pounds—and learn how to interact with other orphaned rhinos. Nieuwoudt hopes that someday both Daisy and Modjadji will be wild again, perhaps grazing close to each other.
