Is Super Travel Legit? The Truth Behind the Viral Travel Platform

Is Super Travel Legit

You may have noticed SuperTravel (once known as SnapTravel) for its tempting hotel offers and easy-to-navigate platform.

However, if you’re an experienced traveler, you’re aware that great deals can sometimes have hidden downsides or even pose a risk of financial loss.

Before you hit the “Book Now” button, let’s get to the bottom of it: Is Super Travel legit, or is it a potential scam in the making?

Table of Contents

Company Overview

SuperTravel, previously called SnapTravel, is an online travel platform celebrated for its competitively-priced hotel offerings. They’ve gained media attention, even being featured in The New York Times, and they offer a special hybrid debit-credit card with unique perks for bookings made through their service. That said, there are some potential concerns you may want to consider before selecting SuperTravel as your go-to travel agency.

One major sign of a company’s credibility is the availability of transparent contact information, enabling you to get in touch easily in case any issues crop up. Additionally, customer feedback and complaints can serve as vital signs; a sudden influx of negative reviews might signal that something could be amiss with the company.

Who Owns Super Travel?

The specifics about who owns SuperTravel are not disclosed to the public, which is often the case for privately owned businesses. For more information on the company’s leadership, you might contact SuperTravel directly or visit their website.

It’s crucial to assess the credibility of a travel agency by examining factors such as proper licensing, accreditations, customer testimonials, and the quality of services offered.

Is Super Travel Legit?

How could SuperTravel be anything but legitimate? It has been featured in high-profile publications like Forbes and The New York Times, which generally vet companies before giving them coverage.

Moreover, NBA star Steph Curry is among the investors in SuperTravel.

Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that booking through SuperTravel may come with a higher likelihood of issues compared to making reservations directly with hotels. While problems can also arise with direct hotel bookings, the odds are generally lower than when booking through SuperTravel.

Should You Book Hotels Through SuperTravel or Directly?

Is Super Travel Legit? Yes, it is. But whether or not it’s the right choice for you hinges on specific circumstances. If SuperTravel provides a cost-saving option that’s kinder to your wallet, then it’s worth considering.

On the other hand, if there’s no price difference between booking through SuperTravel and booking directly with the hotel, involving SuperTravel may be unnecessary.

However, there are scenarios where I would recommend SuperTravel:

  • You’re on a tight budget, and there’s a significant price difference between SuperTravel and direct hotel bookings.
  • You plan to keep your booking details consistent.
  • You’re willing to accept potential risks associated with booking through SuperTravel.

Once these criteria are met, here are some tips to enhance your booking experience:

  • Make sure all the information you provide to SuperTravel is accurate.
  • As soon as you’ve made your reservation via SuperTravel, verify it with the hotel directly.
  • Conduct thorough research on the hotel you’re planning to book to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
  • Opt for a refundable booking if your travel plans are uncertain.

Potential Issues with SuperTravel

Booking through SuperTravel may present several challenges. Here’s a summary of the main concerns:

No Refunds in Some Situations:

If there’s a potential for altering plans, avoid the non-refundable booking option. While it might be cheaper, there’s no assurance of getting your money back if plans change. The remedy? If you’re confident about your travel dates, choose the non-refundable option. If not, select the refundable one to ensure your money’s safety.

Limited Booking Alterations:

Double-check all reservation details, such as dates and package inclusions, before confirming on SuperTravel. The platform restricts changes once bookings are confirmed, irrespective of the hotel’s willingness to adjust. Hence, ensure your booking details are accurate.

Reservation Problem:

Is Super Travel Legit? One prominent concern is SuperTravel occasionally failing to relay guest reservation details to hotels, leading to either unregistered bookings or overbookings. Moreover, some hotels may prioritize guests who book directly, pushing SuperTravel users down the preference list. To avoid this, it’s advised to call the hotel and confirm your reservation directly.

No Control Over Hotel Standards:

SuperTravel doesn’t govern hotel standards. To sidestep potential disappointments, research the hotel meticulously beforehand. Check reviews, amenities, and pictures to get a comprehensive idea. If your hotel stay doesn’t meet expectations, neither SuperTravel nor the hotel might take responsibility since it was a third-party booking. This leaves guests stuck in a blame game between SuperTravel and the hotel. The best approach? Research thoroughly before confirming a booking.

Customer Reviews About Super Travel

SuperTravel’s customer reviews present a varied picture. The company holds a 4-star rating out of a possible 5 on their website. Many clients commend the firm for its excellent customer service, competitive pricing, and flexible trip customization options.

On the flip side, there are also negative reviews. Some customers have reported that they didn’t get the trip they had expected, or that the experience didn’t match the advertisement. A few have also mentioned that customer service was less than satisfactory, particularly in terms of responsiveness.

In summary, SuperTravel is a bona fide travel agency that offers a wide array of services and packages catering to diverse travelers. Their competitive pricing and generally favorable customer service rating make them a reliable option for planning your next journey. Nonetheless, it’s crucial to conduct due diligence, read customer feedback, and research thoroughly before making any bookings. With the appropriate precautions and research, you can be confident that your travel experience with SuperTravel will be both safe and enjoyable.

Why SuperTravel is my Top Choice for Travel Bookings

Supertravel

When it comes to travel, the quest for value often leads me to SuperTravel , a platform I’ve gravitated towards despite the mix of reviews. Once submerged in the dichotomy of SuperTravel’s customer feedback, I’ve surfaced with my own narrative of savings on ‘ super travel hotels ‘ and ‘supertravel booking’ experiences.

what's super travel

Navigating through the plethora of ‘sms hotel deals’, the purpose of my narrative is to articulate why ‘snap travel’ and ‘super travel booking’ through SuperTravel is a savvy choice, despite the turbulence of varied user experiences. In unraveling my story, I aim to dissect elements from ease of use to customer satisfaction that shape my endorsement of ‘super travel hotel booking’ with SuperTravel.

Ease of Use

Navigating the SuperTravel website is a breeze, with its user-friendly layout that smartly categorizes various travel essentials. Here’s how SuperTravel simplifies the booking process:

  • Clear Structure : The website’s design is intuitive, allowing you to easily find what you’re looking for, be it flights, accommodations, or travel tips.
  • Search Functionality : A handy search bar is prominently placed, enabling quick searches for specific destinations or travel advice.
  • Diverse Destinations : Whether you’re dreaming of the beaches in Oceania or the bustling cities of Europe, SuperTravel covers an extensive range of locales.
  • Multi-Platform Booking : You’re not confined to a web browser. SuperTravel embraces modern communication by offering booking services through SMS, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Despite some concerns over hidden fees and customer support that blends bots with human assistance, the platform’s 4-star satisfaction rating and positive reviews about its pricing and trip customization options speak volumes. It’s important to note that while SuperTravel acts as an intermediary and isn’t responsible for hotel issues, the convenience of having a wide array of travel options at your fingertips is undeniable. With backing from a reputable parent company and investment from celebrities like Stephen Curry, SuperTravel stands as a legitimate, though occasionally polarizing, travel agency.

Competitive Pricing and Deals

In my quest for budget-friendly travel, I’ve found SuperTravel’s competitive pricing to be a standout feature. They offer deals on hotels, flights, and vacation packages that often undercut the market, making travel more accessible. Here’s a breakdown of how SuperTravel makes travel affordable:

  • Transparent Pricing : SuperTravel champions clear, upfront costs. Unlike some competitors, they assure no hidden fees, providing a sense of trust and reliability.
  • AI-Powered Deals : Leveraging artificial intelligence, SuperTravel scours the internet to find the most cost-effective flight prices, delivering these bargains directly to your phone via Whatsapp, Messenger, or SMS.

However, it’s crucial to be aware of the potential risks when booking through SuperTravel:

  • Refund Policies : Some bookings may not qualify for refunds. It’s essential to understand the terms before finalizing your travel plans.
  • Hotel Loyalty Points : If you’re looking to earn points with hotel loyalty programs, you likely won’t get any when booking through SuperTravel.
  • Booking Assurance : Always double-check your reservation details and confirm directly with hotels to avoid any mishaps.

To maximize the benefits of using SuperTravel and mitigate the risks, consider the following tips:

  • Significant Savings : Use SuperTravel when the price difference is substantial compared to other booking platforms.
  • Accurate Information : Ensure all your booking details are correct to prevent any issues during your stay.
  • Refundable Options : Opt for refundable bookings when available to give yourself flexibility.

SuperTravel’s platform, with its user-friendly interface and 24/7 customer support, caters to the modern traveler. It’s a legitimate option with a substantial user base of 30 million, but as with any service, individual experiences may vary. Always exercise due diligence by verifying all information and staying cautious before making any payments.

Customer Support and Satisfaction

In my journey with SuperTravel, I’ve encountered a few bumps, particularly in the realm of customer support. It appears I’m not alone, as a glance at various review sites paints a less-than-stellar picture of their customer service:

  • Unrecognized Reservations : Some travelers have reported issues with their bookings not being recognized upon arrival at their destinations.
  • Billing Discrepancies : There have been instances where credit cards were charged without corresponding hotel bookings, leading to understandable frustration.

Moreover, navigating technical glitches on the SuperTravel website, such as the dreaded ‘bad gateway error’, adds to the challenge. Despite these hurdles, SuperTravel has set a goal to respond to 97% of negative feedback within two days. However, customers have indicated that reaching out to customer support can be a test of patience.

When it comes to refunds, especially for cancelled reservations, the process hasn’t always been smooth, with some travelers not receiving the full amount back. This has understandably contributed to the overall dissatisfaction reflected in the consumer rating of 3.34 stars from a substantial number of reviews.

As a seasoned traveler, my advice is to always double-check your reservations directly with the hotel and keep a keen eye on your credit card charges. While SuperTravel has its advantages, it’s essential to be aware of these potential support issues and plan accordingly.

Additional Perks and Rewards

Diving into the world of rewards with SuperTravel has been a game-changer for my travel experiences. I discovered that by simply heading over to the “Rewards” tab on the Super.com website or app, I could tap into a treasure trove of hotel and airline rewards. It’s no surprise that SuperTravel’s loyalty rewards program has been hailed as one of the top travel rewards programs for this year.

Here’s how I make the most of these perks:

  • Stacking Points : I connect my SuperTravel account with other top hotel loyalty programs like Hilton Honors and IHG Rewards Club. This way, every booking with Hotel Engine Rewards not only earns me points on SuperTravel but also with these programs.
  • Strategic Booking : To maximize points, I focus on sticking to one travel loyalty program for hotels and one for flights. By doing so, I accumulate points more rapidly, which leads to bigger and better rewards. Plus, I look for programs that allow point transfers among partners, multiplying my earning potential.
  • Flexible Redemption : The beauty of SuperTravel’s program is the absence of blackout dates. This means I can redeem points whenever I want, giving me the freedom to plan trips around my schedule, not the other way around.

By weaving these strategies into my travel planning, I’ve enjoyed discounted stays, free nights, and even elite perks that would otherwise be out of reach. It’s a simple yet effective way to elevate my travel experiences without breaking the bank.

Throughout the narrative of my experiences with SuperTravel, the value proposition it offers is clear—from user-friendly booking interfaces to competitive pricing on a global scale. The critical analysis provided here underscores both the strengths, such as AI-powered deal searches and a laudable rewards system, and the apparent drawbacks, including customer service challenges and booking and billing issues. These insights not only reflect personal encounters but also resonate with the diverse experiences of the broader user community.

In conclusion, while SuperTravel presents an appealing avenue for travel bookings with its innovative approach and potential cost savings, travelers should proceed with informed caution. Prudent measures, like direct hotel confirmations and vigilant oversight of financial transactions, are advised for a seamless travel experience. Moving forward, it is my hope that this account will serve as a balanced resource for fellow travelers, fostering smarter, more satisfying adventures with platforms like SuperTravel.

My Honest SnapTravel (Super) Review: Is SnapTravel Legit?

* This article contains affiliate links, which help run this site at no extra cost to you.

Sick and tired of paying hundreds for hotels and flights, I tried Super.com for my SnapTravel review–here’s what I found out.

Have you looked at hotel and flight prices recently? They’re INSANE!

And with so much travel to catch up on after the past few years, weddings to go to, and long-delayed plans finally coming up, my wallet is feeling the squeeze.

But with hotel rates and flight booking pricier than ever, I listened closely when I heard that you could get discount flight tickets and cheap hotels with online travel agents.

SnapTravel (now rebranded as Super) is popular because you don’t have to pay for their services.

Unlike some other online travel agents, with SnapTravel, you don’t immediately work with a person.

Instead, SnapTravel uses AI chatbots that communicate with you over messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or regular text SMS.

A real person is available if needed, but their chatbot is surprisingly good!

I tested SnapTravel for this review and compared their deals to actual prices.

In this honest SnapTravel review, I’ll investigate whether the company is legit, share my experience using SnapTravel’s services, and answer all your questions about the website and app.

SnapTravel Review: A white desk with a computer monitor displaying the SnapTravel (Super) homepage and a pair of hands typing on the keyboard visible at the bottom of the frame.

What is SnapTravel?

Close up of a hand holding a phone that displays a chat with a SnapTravel (Super) AI bot, with a soft focus interior room in the background.

SnapTravel is an online booking website (and app!) that combines the benefits of a travel agent with the ease and free cost of online booking platforms.

SnapTravel is essentially an online travel agent that lets you plug in dates and a location to find hotel and flight deals (just like any other online booking website).

You can occasionally find great deals because, like a travel agent, SnapTravel has access to discounts on hotels and flights and can pass those discounts on to you.

SnapTravel doesn’t charge you for its services. And unlike many apps, you don’t have to download the SnapTravel app to use their product.

Instead, you enter information directly into their website like any other booking platform. You can also opt to chat with a bot over several messaging apps.

A Quick Look at SnapTravel as a Company

A white desk with a computer monitor displaying the SnapTravel (Super) homepage with a globe, passport, mug of pens, and phone sitting beside it.

First off, SnapTravel went through a rebranding recently and now goes by Super , and hotel booking is now part of their Superbrand.

Super Travel hasn’t quite taken off yet, so I’ll still call it SnapTravel for this article.

SnapTravel is a Canadian startup founded in 2016 by tech entrepreneurs Hussein Fazal and Henry Shi.

SnapTravel is a legit company with investors like Steph Curry (though I doubt he spends hours scouring the internet to save fifty bucks on a flight!).

It combines advanced chatbot technology with the business model of an online travel agent to find the best hotel and flight deals for customers.

Rather than charging people for these services, SnapTravel is free and relies on commissions from customers’ bookings.

Additionally, although I haven’t seen this in any chats with SnapTravel, they will sometimes send sponsored messages that partners might pay SnapTravel to advertise to its customers.

Of course, SnapTravel mentions this as a positive– giving customers suggestions for where to stay or what to see.

SnapTravel Review: My Experience With Using SnapTravel

A man sits at a white desk, typing on a keyboard and looking at a computer monitor displaying the SnapTravel (Super) homepage with a globe, passport, mug of pens, and phone sitting beside it.

I researched SnapTravel hotel booking, SnapTravel flight booking, and SnapTravel customer service. Here’s my experience.

SnapTravel Hotel Booking

“Snaptravel Hotels” now goes by the name “SuperTravel.” They are booking hotels solely over Messenger.

Now SnapTravel has added a more familiar way to show their deals. You can find SnapTravel hotel deals through a search system or by scrolling to the bottom.

I wasn’t able to start searching immediately, however. When I first hopped on to find a hotel, they wanted to ensure I wasn’t a robot. Okay, fine, I understand that.

But SnapTravel did this in a strange way. I had to get a code sent to my phone. In doing so, they can now send marketing messages, which was a negative experience for me.

When you use SnapTravel , you’re not finding the best deals for a hotel through a search. Instead, you search to see what options are available, and then you can talk with their AI chat.

When searching for the best hotel deals in Mill Valley, I stumbled upon Travel Lodge. The first screen of this search showed a savings of $6 off in pink on top of the picture.

As I proceeded to find the savings for three nights, it came back as $11. In the end, Snaptravel showed me a total savings of $17.85.

But when comparing this deal with the hotel’s website, I saved closer to $9.88. This amount is still 3% in savings– which is good!

When factoring in other reward programs (if you stick with one hotel company), the savings could be a wash. Still, these travel deals make SnapTravel legit!

SnapTravel Flight Booking

Close up of a pair of hands holding a phone that displays a chat with a SnapTravel (Super) AI bot, with a soft focus interior room in the background.

As I’m writing this, the entire SnapTravel website is currently under maintenance as they transition to their re-branded name.

You might wonder where the flight deals are when you visit Super’s website. Until recently, to view the flights, you had to visit SnapTravel .

In the short time since I tested SnapTravel, things have changed again. Now when you click that link, you’ll get a message that the third-party carrier they used to work with has ceased operations, and they don’t currently have a third-party carrier associated.

Regardless, my experience with their previous set-up was not positive. I was disappointed with my flight search for several reasons.

First of all, their site is super slow! The last time I tried using it, it took over 30 seconds for the page to load. Maybe that’s why their site is under maintenance now.

It doesn’t stop there, either. SnapTravel wasn’t really showing cheap rates– quite the opposite, in fact! I had to double-check to make sure they were correct.

I put my desired flight dates from LA to Omaha into SnapTravel, and they showed me a round-trip flight for $440. The same route on Google Flights was $237! How does that make any sense?

These flights were also during the week and six months in advance. I wanted to talk to the support team about these flight prices. It seems they currently only offer that for their hotel deals. But more on this later.

Eventually, everything will be under the “Super” brand. Hopefully, all of this work is worth it, and they will have lower prices.

When researching SnapTravel, I found negative reviews more frequently than I would have liked.

Still, the SnapTravel reviews on the Better Business Bureau give them an A+ rating!

It wasn’t all bad. SnapTravel did have some good flight features, like the ability to search for multi-city flights.

However, given that many SnapTravel alternatives exist, they need to step up in this department or stick to hotels.

SnapTravel Customer Service

A view looking over a man's shoulder at his hand holding a phone that displays a chat with a SnapTravel (Super) AI bot, with a soft focus interior room in the background.

When you’re trying to find out if SnapTravel’s amazing deals are legit or not, you will run across some negative reviews.

The complaints mostly had to do with reservations not going through, cancellations not working, etc.

I suggest confirming the booking details with the airline and/or hotel to avoid dealing with this.

This issue becomes an even bigger deal when customer service isn’t reliable. SnapTravel uses AI, which has become increasingly popular in recent months.

SnapTravel’s chat can answer a lot of questions easily, it seems. I also asked their AI chat to look at flights for me.

Surprisingly enough, it did this and even found cheaper flights than I saw when I tried to search on their website myself.

When you click support, there will be multiple options you can choose.

Which option you’ll choose will depend on what type of question you have. They’ll then send you an article about it.

I wanted to talk to an agent directly, so I simply clicked “talk to agent” in the chat box to do this. They’ll then prompt you to give more information about what you need.

From here, things got tricky. I needed to talk to the support team about a plane ticket they deemed as “non-refundable.” Instead, they sent me to their old SnapTravel flights website to complete a form.

Since they are a third-party site, it might be challenging to receive a full refund. Be sure to check out the SnapTravel refund policy before booking anything!

I also read about some of these issues before checking their online reviews. The SnapTravel reviews were correct; their customer service was sub-par, to say the least.

A white desk with a computer monitor displaying the SnapTravel (Super) homepage.

Supercash Bonus

SnapTravel offers its own unique credit card affiliated with MasterCard. This card is one of their best perks, and here’s why.

The SuperCash card offers a 10% cashback on all purchases you make on SuperTravel. On top of this, you’ll also get 5% cashback on brands like Nike and Apple through SuperShop .

Lastly, you’ll receive 2% cash back on all other purchases outside of SuperTravel.

These deals are excellent and, at the bare minimum, would be a wash with other credit cards or reward programs.

Good Deals for Hotels

Since you can’t currently book flights (or, rather, they make it extremely difficult), you’ll find the best deals with SnapTravel hotels.

Their deals on hotels do save you a good bit of money. It’s always worth a look using their user-friendly search system.

I always want to ensure I have the best price for any accommodation I book. Given that, I’d consider adding SnapTravel as a top website for booking hotels.

Free to Use

At the end of the day, it’s hard to complain too much about a company that is completely free to use.

Finding a SnapTravel Coupon or SnapTravel discount code to receive even better travel deals is possible. Just make sure to double-check your reservation after finding those deals!

Close up of a hand holding a phone that displays a chat with a SnapTravel (Super) AI bot, with a soft focus interior room in the background.

You Can’t Stack Credit Card Points with SuperCash

This is where SuperCash isn’t an absolute must to use. I have fantastic travel credit cards that give me just as good (if not better) deals as what I can find on SuperCash.

Knowing how to use these points from all the different credit cards can be confusing. That’s why SuperCash is a great tool because it’s easy to use! At the end of the day, it doesn’t hurt to have it.

Page to Book Flights is Slow

When I looked into flights a few months ago, the website was too slow. Because it was taking far too long to load the pages, I almost immediately went to look at the same route on Google Flights.

This issue simply can’t happen in this day and age. I’m hoping they fix this aspect because they have the potential to offer an awesome service if they were to model it after their hotel booking interface.

How to Have the Best Experience Shopping on SnapTravel

A man sits at a white desk, typing on a keyboard and looking at a computer monitor displaying the SnapTravel (Super) homepage with a globe, passport, mug of pens, and phone sitting beside it.

I want you to learn from my experience shopping on SnapTravel. When booking a hotel, you’ll have the best results if you find a good deal on SnapTravel, and then check other sites.

Make sure the price and availability match up with what you’re seeing on SnapTravel. There are deals out there on SnapTravel, but these normally come through the messenger.

As I stated previously, SnapTravel uses AI to help you find these deals. Send them a quick message in the messenger with your dates and destination, and they’ll send you these deals.

Once you find the booking you like, you can proceed to checkout. At this time, you can even add a purchase to SnapTravel’s VIP program.

The VIP program includes the following:

  • Free Upgrades
  • Expedited Customer Support
  • Free Booking Modifications
  • 24/7 Concierge Service

You can get all of this for only $30 for the first six months and then $5 monthly afterward!

Other SnapTravel Products

Close-up of a man in profile looking at his hand holding a phone that displays a chat with a SnapTravel (Super) AI bot, with a soft focus interior room in the background.

SnapTravel (now Super) offers more than great travel deals. They also offer different products that can help you save on your next vacation.

These savings come from gas, insurance, pharmacy, and phone plans. And there are also shopping deals if you want to buy certain items for your next trip!

When scrolling through SnapTravel, you’ll see the trending deals of the day in a user-friendly form. These deals help make SnapTravel legit and worth checking out!

SnapTravel Return & Exchange Policy

A white desk with a computer monitor displaying the SnapTravel (Super) homepage.

What doesn’t make SnapTravel legit (and makes customers angry) is their return policy.

Like many third-party companies, SnapTravel states that they are not responsible if an event arises, like cancellations, delays, etc. There will be no refunds.

For example: if you booked a great travel deal on a hotel of your dreams only to discover they don’t have a reservation with your name when you arrive, you’re still liable.

You might be able to get SnapTravel credits, but they’re far and few between.

These issues are among the many SnapTravel complaints you will see online.

Their return policy is a little better for SuperShop. When you purchase items through Supershop, you can receive a full refund within 30 days of delivery. This is normally more than enough time to return items that you don’t like.

Any item you purchase through SuperShop will normally ship between 24 – 48 hours and will then arrive within 7 – 10 business days.

The best news is that shipping is free within the United States! That free shipping saved me a lot of money and stress over the years.

FAQs About SnapTravel

FAQs About SnapTravel

Can SnapTravel be trusted?

Is SnapTravel legit and can be trusted? It certainly can! The Better Business Bureau (BBB) gives it an A+ rating with almost 2700 reviews and 4.44 out of 5 stars.

Other SnapTravel reviews and online reviews on sites like Trustpilot rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars. SnapTravel works and it’s possible to find great deals.

Snaptravel’s average rating is still high compared to other sites I’ve used. If they fix up a few things (like the flights), their score can increase significantly.

How does SnapTravel work?

You must first use the chat feature to find the best deals for your trip. Message them the dates and locations for your upcoming trip.

SnapTravel will also send exclusive deals through other messaging platforms like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, iMessage, etc.

From there, they will send the special deals they have for you. If you want to glance at what might be available before this, simply scroll down or use the search bar.

You must talk with the messenger to purchase SnapTravel flights or a SnapTravel hotel.

I understand this idea, but it often doesn’t deliver great service. However, with the recent rapid advancements in AI, I can see it being better soon.

You can also request room types and specify whether you want the SnapTravel VIP package, which can be a great travel deal if you plan on using it a lot.

Are there hidden fees with SnapTravel?

There are no hidden fees with SnapTravel! This is fantastic, as hidden fees can waste time and money.

Does SnapTravel refund your money?

SnapTravel hotels are non-refundable, but Snapshop is! You can get a refund on anything you order from Snapshop within 30 days of delivery.

Who owns SnapTravel?

SnapTravel is owned by SnapCommerce, a company that uses AI to help find these deals.

Is SnapTravel associated with Expedia?

SnapTravel works directly with sites like Expedia and Booking.com. Not only this, but one of their initial investors was the CEO of Expedia! Steph Curry is another known investor.

What is SnapMoney?

SnapMoney is the company that offers cash advances for the SnapCash card.

Conclusion: So, is SnapTravel Any Good?

A man sits at a white desk, typing on a keyboard and looking at a computer monitor displaying the SnapTravel (Super) homepage with a globe, passport, mug of pens, and phone sitting beside it.

SnapTravel has its uses and can find you fantastic deals on hotels. With that said, it does have its drawbacks.

Once they fix their SnapTravel deal page for flights, I think Super will be a huge piece in my arsenal of the best travel deal sites for planning a trip.

Using their messenger to find the best hotel deals is a simple feature, saving you good money! What really makes SnapTravel legit are its deals on hotels.

Using SnapTravel to book hotels with their SuperCash card creates amazing savings. It’s something everyone should think about using when planning their vacation.

My Favorite Alternative to SnapTravel

My favorite alternative to SnapTravel is Hotels.com . This is largely due to their fantastic rewards program for hotels. A lot of times, you’ll get a great deal plus a one-night stamp.

When you get ten stamps, you’ll receive a free night’s stay worth up to the average of those ten hotels!

Is Super Travel Legit? (Beware Before Booking)

Last Updated: March 1, 2023

is supertravel legit

SuperTravel (previously SnapTravel) might have caught your eyes with its irresistible hotel deals and user-friendly interface.

But, as a savvy traveler, you know that the best deals sometimes come with hidden costs or risks of losing your hard-earned money.

So before you click on that “Book Now” button, let me uncover the truth: Is Super Travel legit, or is it just another scam waiting to happen?

Let’s dive right in!

  • Is SuperTravel Legit?
  • Should You Book Hotels Directly or Through SuperTravel?

Is Super Travel Legit?

Super Travel is certainly a legit online travel agency as it has been in business for several years and featured in The New York Times. However, the risks of issues associated with booking through SuperTravel are high as compared to booking directly with the hotel.

SuperTravel

Although problems can occur even with booking directly with the hotel as well, the chances are much lower compared to booking through SuperTravel.

Here’s why:

SuperTravel basically acts as an intermediary between you and the hotels.

How SuperTravel Works

Being a middleman, SuperTravel collects your payment and is responsible for your booking, not the hotel you booked with since your contract is not directly with them, it is with SuperTravel.

Therefore, the hotel isn’t liable to help you directly if something goes wrong.

In case something odd happens and you need any help, you will have to contact SuperTravel and then they will reach out to the airline you are booked with and then SuperTravel will get back to you.

How Does SuperTravel Work

Since an intermediary is involved between you and the hotel, you’re most probably going to be stuck in a lot of back-and-forths between the hotel and SuperTravel.

And this makes the whole process of resolving your issues a bit more complicated and your issues take longer to resolve.

In the same way, making changes, cancellations, and getting a refund becomes more complicated when your hotels are booked through SuperTravel since a middleman is involved.

So that’s why the risks associated with booking through SuperTravel are high as compared to direct bookings with the hotel.

Now if we talk about the risks/drawbacks associated with booking through SuperTravel, here are the major ones:

1. Reservation Issues

Booking a hotel through SuperTravel comes with the risk of not having your reservation.

Sometimes SuperTravel fails to notify the hotel about the guest’s reservation, resulting in no reservation or overbooking for the same room.

While at other times, the hotels also “bump” those guests who have paid the least through an online travel agency like SuperTravel and resell it to someone who has paid more directly.

And upon the arrival of the guest at the hotel, they deceive them by denying the existence of their reservation.

Tip : Contact the hotel and confirm your booking as soon as you’ve booked. You can contact the hotel via the phone number provided in the listing.

SuperTravel Contact Hotels

2. Making Changes Are Generally Refused

Another potential risk associated with booking a hotel through SuperTravel is that making changes to your bookings is generally refused by them even if the hotel agrees to the amendments.

Tip : Double-check your information and ensure that you’ve selected the correct dates before booking your hotel through SuperTravel to avoid any hassles later on.

3. Under Any Circumstances, Refunds For Non-Refundable Bookings Are Generally Refused

If you opt for a non-refundable booking through SuperTravel, do not expect any refunds from them no matter what circumstances may arise that affect your travel plans and even if the hotel you’re booked with is willing to offer you a refund.

Tip : If there’s a chance that your travel plans might change, it’s advisable to pay a little extra and choose a refundable booking option when booking through SuperTravel.

4. The Standards of The Hotel Are Out of SuperTravel’s Control

Another risk/drawback associated with booking through SuperTravel or any other online travel agency is that the standards of the hotel are out of their control since they are a 3rd party booking service.

So if the hotel you booked through SuperTravel does not meet your expectations or it is not as exactly as shown in the listing, unfortunately, you can’t do anything.

Do not expect that you’ll reach out to SuperTravel and they will refund you, book you with another nearby hotel, or anything else.

Similarly, do not expect refunds directly from the hotel since they are not liable for your booking.

In a situation like this, it is quite possible that SuperTravel may push things onto the hotel, and the hotel’s staff may turn around and push things back on SuperTravel, leaving you stuck in the middle.

SuperTravel And Hotel Issues

Therefore, you’ll have to accept the hotel as it is.

Tip : Thoroughly research about the hotel you’re considering for your stay to avoid any nasty surprises when you arrive at the property. Look for reviews, amenities, photos of the hotel, etc.

So these are 4 major risks associated with booking a hotel through SuperTravel. However, you can minimize these risks by following the tips mentioned above .

Having said that, let’s conclude : Is Super Travel legit?

While it’s true that booking through SuperTravel carries high risks, including those mentioned above, but as far as its legitimacy is concerned, it is indeed a legitimate company.

SuperTravel has been featured in the New York Times , Forbes , TechCrunch , and dozens of other press outlets.

Such well-known media outlets probably wouldn’t feature SuperTravel if it were a scam.

Moreover, SuperTravel’s parent company, Super.com, has been in business since 2016 and it is a fact that scam companies don’t survive this long.

On top of all that, SuperTravel got funded by Stephen Curry , the greatest basketball player of all time.

If SuperTravel were not a legit company, why would such a well-known basketball player invest his money in a scam company?

By taking these few major factors into consideration, we can’t deny that SuperTravel is legit.

Apart from being a legit platform, it often offers cheaper rates than booking directly with hotels.

So, Should You Book Hotels Directly or Through SuperTravel?

Well, it depends!

If the price difference between booking directly vs. through SuperTravel is the same or not substantial then there is no point to book your hotels through SuperTravel.

However, if the price difference is significant then it mostly comes down to personal comfort level.

Personally, I recommend SuperTravel only if:

  • You’re tight on a budget.
  • The price difference between booking directly vs through SuperTravel is substantial.
  • You are pretty much sure that you won’t change or cancel your hotel for a refund.
  • You’re willing to take the risks associated with booking through SuperTravel.

Besides these conditions, you must be following these tips:

  • Confirm your reservation: As soon as your hotels are booked through SuperTravel, confirm your booking to avoid any nasty surprises when you arrive at the accommodation.
  • Ensure that your booking details are correct: Double-check your booking information and ensure that you’ve selected the right dates for your stay to avoid hassles later on.
  • Research about the hotel: Thoroughly research about the hotel you’re considering for your stay to avoid any nasty surprises when you arrive at the property. Look for reviews, amenities, photos of the hotel and its rooms, etc.
  • Choose refundable bookings if there’s a chance that your travel plans might change, it’s advisable to pay a little extra and choose a refundable booking option when booking through SuperTravel.

So that’s it from my side!

Whenever I make a reservation through a third party, And, even though, it says non refundable, I’ve always been able to get a refund with Booking, Priceline, Hotels, Expedia, Agoda, Vio. But with Super travel, they send you through hoops in hopes that we’ll just eventually give up.

Hi! I booked a hotel using SUPER and now I am waiting for a refund (that they confirmed will take place). It is taking forever and I’ve already called them several times. Is there someone else I can reach out to? they just keep telling me they will “ask for a follow up status” to their colleagues, thanks! Betina

I will NEVER book any other reservation thru Super Travel….even thou you pay the $17.00 for the 100% refund, the terms and conditions make it nearly impossible to get your refund. It does not cover for changing dates, changing your mind, finding another place closer, or anything like that. Big Rip OFF!!!

What you see on their website is *not* what you get. The only reason they’re still operating in my opinion is lack of consumer protections. *I* could create a website that takes people’s money and doesn’t promise an actual reservation or service. I guess that’s not illegal? Super Travel took my money for a hotel room that wasn’t available and refused to refund me. I slept in my car.

Everything your are describing Is correct accept that they resell wholesale bookings made by companies like Expedia. They purchase these at a discount and resell them. Super Scammy is what they should change their name to. Now they want to sell insurance and banking services? I think regulators should look into this.

Just trying to get a receipt for our stay, can you please help?

I booked through Super Travel Dada Suites in Rome, arriving 10min after at the hotel. There was no one at the hotel. I called Super Travel immediately and two agents tried to reach out the hotel, also unsuccessfully. That alone should be enough for a refund. The invoice and payment proof of another place I had to second pay to sleep the night were demanded and sent to Super Travel. All sorts of problems were brought up by Super Travel to deny refund. Summarizing, it’s a SCAM by all means. Reservation B_10415569.

Don’t ever book through Super Travel. I booked a room and had roaches crawling on me, but Super Travel is not willing to communicate with the hotel when the hotel is willing to refund my money. I’m taking both to small claims court.

My hotel was taken over by the Governor of New York for asylum seekers and my reservation was canceled. Supertravel never notified me of this and I only found out the day of the reservation because I called the hotel to inquire about something before I left my house (the hotel told me that all guests and third parties were issued refunds). I tried calling Supertravel and couldn’t get a live person. I was forced to file a dispute with my credit card company in order to get a refund.

I will never use supertravel I booked a hotel online when I showed up it was a house renting a room I was so uncomfortable and it was creepy I left and they refuse to refund my money !!!

They are a scam!!!!! When I arrived at the hotel there was confusion regarding the booking, I was charged an additional $21.52 being an Intl Transaction Fee which did NOT show on my receipt only shown on my credit card statement. Nowhere did I see that there was this additional charge. Keep right away from this Super Travel group. They sound cheap but expensive in the long run.

I’ve used super trouble and it’s been good and bad. The issue was a super travel the issue is the hotels. Since they are a third party, sometimes the hotel does not want to give out that pricing. When it comes to refunds and reservations, it is what it is. You’re getting a great deal. You need to pay for the Cancellation. I have saved tons of money with supertravel and i’ve only had one refrigerator was it able to get, but but It turned out to be a priceline issue, i’m not sure priceline owns these guys. And we have to be honest In traveling and staying in hotels, I’ve found out. The hotels only want 3 to 4 online third party services. They want super travel out because of the deals. Now, if you plan on keeping your reservatiand make sure your hotel accepts super travel, then you should be okay. But there’s a conspiracy at hotels against Super travel, The deals are too good, and hotels have told me they’re not making money with super travel, so they refuse to take bookings sent through super travel, so you have to call to make sure your booking is being placed or that the hotel will take super travel bookings, Choice hotels is one conglomerate that is starting to refuse to take super travel bookings. It’s just too good, These hotels at choice conglomerates want no less than eighty dollars per night. Now if you find a separate hotel And you can confirm that it takes super travel take the deal. But make sure you keep your reservations. And hotels are starting to have the same price point as your expedia’s, hot wires, priceline, Hotels are not giving away deals. They’re trying to eliminate their party purchasing and many of them are not accepting multitudes of third parties, not just super travel.

No doubt this company is a scam. I made a reservation in Valcouver using SUPERTRAVEL. They charged my credit card the full amount and when I ariived at the hotel there was no reservation at all. And they do not refund me. And also they do not answer my emails. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!

This is a SCAM be warned!! they will take your money and give you the runaround and the hotel will not have any idea who you are.

Well I booked a room with them two days ago they gave me a confirmation number I called the hotel and they said no they don’t have anything and that all those travel places only takes 2 hours and I told the hotel it’s been 2 days and then when I called the travel agency they said that I had the wrong confirmation number which was printed out and told me they would give me another one which they never gave me and then told me that they would have to get it and either email me or call me with it they couldn’t give it to me right then and there, so I will call the hotel again tomorrow and check

Hi Donna, can you please share what happened with your booking in the end?

They are a scam. They said they cover room and fees. The HOTEL also CHARGED the fees. They give you a low price that they make up and then they add non existent fees. THEY ARE A SCAM

I feel this company in his scam! Experience the worst from this company, during my reservation trying to Find a hotel stay with reasonable prices. Never once did I see there was be a fee of a deposit. Only aware that there will be a resort fee which was only $17.00 Once I arrived at my chosen hotel I was told that I would have to pay a $125 deposit as well. After explaining that I was totally unaware I was guaranteed a refund from the hotel as long as the travel agency would make a call to the hotel. To confirm. After calling several times and getting the same response from different agent team members, I find myself going in circles and became very frustrated. This company had no intentions of fixing the issue. They only give you false intentions that you will be refunded. Was told that I would have to pay an extra $30 to get a refund credit. It back to my card which I found very ridiculous. Then the representative that I was speaking to told me that she would contact me in 45 minutes and I waited and she’d never return my call I. Pleaded with them that I was traveling with small children and if they could expedite my situation and pretty much we were thrown under the bus and never Assisted. do not rent from this company you will be very disappointed. and played for a Fool this company is a joke and it should be reported to the better business bureau.

I reported them to the BBB yesterday. Anyone that has been scanned really need to turn them in.

For months now I am contacting Super to transfer back my credit (I received because they cancelled 3!! bookings). No chance. The support chat team pretends to do something but in the end nothing happens ever. Probably it’s a fraud – tactic of them, just keeping the money.

As the hotel is booked, They take the money from credit card and they don’t pay the hotel. So, the hotel charges because they have not been paid. ( that’s what hotel told me). Basically, it’s a double charge. stay away from this company. book from a reputable website. Their low prices are just to attract customers and do the same trick to their customers. When i called the hotel, they said the supertravel didn’t provide a virtual card number and on the other side when I called the supertravel, they said that they paid them. It is just a game that hotel and this website play so that you would get tired of pursuing your money that is stolen by the hotel and this app.

Booked a Hampton Inn room through Super Travel. When we arrived, there was no reservation. They sent me across the street to a lesser hotel with no pool, no breakfast. They HAD my reservation. Contacted Super Travel….still waiting for callback. This seems like fraud

I used Super Travel one time. Worst experience ever. Based on my experience I recommend you use someone else.

Super Travel is not a legitimate business. You cannot trust that your reservations will actually be made (mine were not, although I had confirmation documents) or that they will assist you at all in refunding your money or finding other accommodations for you as a result of their errors. I was literally stranded at night in Mexico on my own. I strongly recommend NOT ever using this service.

Super Travel overbooked a hire that was full. The employees said they told all third party booking sites they were full for the weekend and they had several people show up, including me, even though they did not have any rooms available since early in the day (May 27, 2023). Trying to get a live human and a refund is a painstakingly slow process.

Super Travel is total crap. Their cancellation policy requires you to cancel days in advance. They give you credits if you book on their app, which is not functional, and then you waste time trying to claim credits because none of the hotels actually apply to the credits. A total waste of time and money.

Please take my advice and DO NOT USE SUPERTRAVEL!! I have to travel with my daughter because she has brain surgery and Supertravel charges for 2 rooms and does not refund you! They are a Gimmick!!

I hope your situation got better and most of all, I hope your little girl is doing great. I am also waiting on a refund. Did you ever get your $ back? I call them frequently and they keep answering the exact same rehearsed words.

Never again!!! Made a mistake on the date immediately called to change date and they refused! Do not book with this company. Spend a bit more go through Booking.com or Expedia they make it right!!!

I was excited to find this price for a 3 night stay. Unfortunately, my daughter is in the hospital and not doing well. I cannot even call the hotel to cancel my reservation, although I know I will lose my money.

I have used Super travel since the beginning of the Pandemic and book hotels through them at least 3-4 times per month. I’ve had a couple of problems with bookings which caused problem when i tried to check in and they were resolved. They has earned the right to not 100%. Booking is easy and reliable and their pricing beats other sources 98% of the time for quality properties. And what you see on the site is what you get. The pricing can increase as the day moves forward but they remain a good deal. If you sign up you receive $ credit that you can apply on your next booking. There is an issue between syncing between my desktop and cell phone versions. but not an interfering issue. I am affiliated with only myself and I give my experience with them a 98.5% approval rating. I had to give them this shout out when i read the blog. T hey give me flexibility and choice in managing my hotel needs. Thank you !

Also some of the hotels advertised on super travel have not given their authorisation to have their rooms sold on that platform

Do these things that you advise to beware of apply to any other booking sites?

Smooth booking and check-in

Had a good experience with my booking, I arrived at the hotel and checked in smoothly. I received a text message reminder a day before my stay. The only downside is that you can’t cancel or change a reservation, but it is stated clearly before you reserve.

Very welcoming and helpful

Very welcoming and helpful from the moment we arrived and because our room was ready they let us check in early which was excellent. They gave us a welcome refreshment and explained everything we wanted to know. Our room was spotless and bright and the bed was really comfortable. We had some drinks at the bar when we returned from our night out and they have a decent selection to choose from. After a great nights sleep we had breakfast which was enjoyable and although the fruit juice dispenser had broken down there was plenty other beverages to go around. All the staff we had dealings with were polite and pleasant and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. We had a very enjoyable stay at the Moxy.

Reserved a room in Livingston

Reserved a room in Livingston, Texas for the night. When we went to the hotel the room for handicap people had a door that you couldn't lock. Door was warped and was hard to even shut. There was not another room available. Had desk clerk call manager and refund was approved. Never could get refund from hotel or Super. Just lost $119.00 dollars. Will never use again Zack Robertson was the manager at La Quinta Inn.

Actually appreciate the updates as this…

Actually appreciate the updates as this situation was unfold and being resolved. Thank you for your commitment to resolving this for me. I am homeless and I appreciate you understanding that this was a need-based on practice and integrity. Thank you, God bless you.

Deceptive Added Charges

Not thrilled. Upon arriving at my hotel, I was required to pay an additional amount equal to 10% of the room cost for resort and parking fees. After contacting super.com with my grievance, I was told this is a normal practice and that their agreement states I can expect these charges. I find this deceptive and these charges should have been a transparent part of the room rate.

Reply from Super.com

Hi Mark, Thank you for reaching out regarding your reservation. We understand that encountering unexpected fees can be surprising. It's important to note that hotels often have standard practices of charging a mandatory deposit and/or resort fees directly to guests. Please note that the listing did include the room rate and hotel fees in their listing. Super Travel displays the room rate and then the additional hotel fees are in the "About" section of the hotel card, both pre-booking and in the customer's voucher post-booking and payment receipt. This is separate because they are not charged by Super Travel but rather mandatory payments to be made directly to the property and at their sole discretion. We trust this clarifies matters for you.

Awesome experience with super.com

First time using Super as a 3rd party to book a hotel room. I had a great experience, super easy to book through. Had a better rate than the other major 3rd party options and got exactly what I requested and paid for. I just hope they don't get greedy like the other guys and start jacking up their rates to get more money.

Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville Trips

I have stayed at several places throughout my time out here and super has given the best rates majority of the time. Super is so quick and easy to utilize. They also have discounts available at times on top of their already cheaper prices.

Hotel says there is no such booking

Hello i booked a room with super.com, i called hotel to request a booking for spa upon arrival. However hotel says there is no such booking, they do not recognise my name or my booking reference b-13554189. Live chat is giving template replies. Seems to be a scam.

I made a reservation with Super.com

I made a reservation with Super.com. Two days later I had to change the reservation, from 3 to 2 days, due to a change in funeral plans. I was told that I was too late to modify the reservation, because it was against the hotel's policy. But that was not true, the hotel modified the reservation, but Super.com refused to refund the one day of payment. I asked the representative from the Super.com call center to connect me with a supervisor, she refused, and told me that a supervisor would tell me the exact same thing; I could receive no refund for the one day. A supervisor emailed later that day, told me to "jump thru hoops;" call the hotel, ask them to send me a letter, allowing a "one time exception" to Super.com's policy, go onto Super.com, fill out a form, and attach the hotel's letter, in.pdf format, and they may allow a refund of the one day's charge. I am attending a funeral in amother state - I seriously do not need this additional grief. Now appears I may receive the refund, but I'm not sure. And I do not think I will book with Super.com again. I am dissappointed. But I am thankful the representative was wrong. At least they are considering refunding my one day charge.

Hi Kelly, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We completely understand how important it is for every aspect of your travel to align perfectly with your plans. It's worth noting that once a reservation is made through us, we are unable to modify the dates, as these are set based on your initial search criteria. To ensure a smooth travel experience, please take a moment to verify all your booking details, including dates, location, and price, before finalization. It's also beneficial to review our cancellation policy, so you're well-informed about your options if changes are needed. Our Support team was able to address and resolved the issue. Please note that the refund amount of $208.32 USD issued on April 9, 2024, back to your original method of payment. It may take up to 3 business days to be process. If it takes longer, please contact your bank to confirm the transaction. We hope this clarifies things for you,

Great experience in getting my booking…

Great experience in getting my booking done and quick response to my email inquiry. I highly recommend them and will use them again in the future.

They are crooks

They are crooks! I booked a room 2weeks in advance. At the airport they notified me that my hotel was full. I asked for another hotel. They said there are no more rooms in the city. My option was to cancel and get a refund. But now they say I don't get the refund because I didn't say yes? I said yes. . I am furious. They owe me $145

SnapTravel (SuperTravel) Review [2024]: Scam or Bargain?

SnapTravel (SuperTravel) Review [2024]: Scam or Bargain?

Found great deals or just curious about what SnapTravel is all about? Worried about those SnapTravel reviews? Here's what I found in my deep dive into the flights and hotel deals site, including the features, pricing, and other important details you should know before you book with them!

what's super travel

Whether you’ve traveled the world over, or are planning your first adventure, I know that something all travelers love is a deal. Finding those deals and promotions when you’re booking flights or hotels can be tiresome, and hard to locate sometimes.

The reason is primarily due to the overwhelming amount of options in travel deal sites like Priceline or Scott's Cheap Flights that are directly competing with each other to provide travelers with the best deals. After all, it's only normal you'll want the best of the best travel deals, right?

That’s where SnapTravel comes in handy. Not heard of them before? Perhaps you've seen their online reviews and you're wondering... should I really trust them?

I've looked into the reviews and research so you don't have to. Here's the facts about SuperTravel, previously known as SnapTravel.

what's super travel

What Is SnapTravel?

Founded in 2016, Snaptravel is a Canadian startup that aims to get customers the best prices on hotels and flights using AI. In August 2020, according to GlobeTrender, they had helped book more than 350,000 nights in over 150 countries.

SnapTravel describes itself as a “travel agent over messaging.” Their services offer a platform of accommodation booking services, namely Snaptravel hotels or Snaptravel Flights, that aims to bring the latest cheap travel deals to its customers. They offer you promotions and great rates via 1:1 private chat through SMS, WhatsApp, or Messenger.

You send them a message with your city and date preferences, and you’ll get a reply with SnapTravel's tailored travel deals, which you can then easily take advantage of with a few clicks.

SuperTravel - SnapTravel Rebranded

SuperTravel, a rebrand

SnapTravel is currently undergoing the process of rebranding to SuperTravel . While the logo and name has changed, the company promises that all the travel deals, credits, and points will stay the same.

I'll continue to refer to SuperTravel as SnapTravel until the rebranding is complete as to not confuse you!

A suspected reason for the rebranding is to reduce the amount of negative reviews SnapTravel currently has online, which I'll also cover extensively below!

How Do You Use Snaptravel?

So how does Snaptravel work, exactly? It's pretty straightforward.

If you scroll down to the bottom of Snaptravel's webpage, you can browse hotel deals by city or destination.

This allows you to see what’s available before you begin messaging with SnapTravel to scope out prices and locations. You cannot book online, though, as you have to go through SMS or Facebook Messenger to access SnapTravel’s deals.

Looking for VIP upgrades? SnapTravel can also help tune up the quality of your stay to make your trip extra special.

SnapTravel operates in a similar fashion to the one-to-one relationship you might have with a travel agent, but they use AI to act as the agent. Their booking engine uses industry connections and relationships to search for private contract rates, bulk fares, and consolidator inventory that aren’t typically available to the public.

If you're on Fb Messenger, you can also use SnapTravel to look for deals the same way you can chat with your friends online!

This means that customers are getting not only the best rates but ones they might not find anywhere else.

SnapTravel describes itself as being “half-bot, half-human.” This means that while many of your inquiries will be handled by a bot, you can still speak with a human agent if need be.

The ease of using an AI service means that you will get quick and efficient service to help you find the best rates for your travel adventures.

Discount Flight Tickets

While SnapTravel started as a booking service for hotels, they have expanded to include flights in their service. For great deals on flights, check out their specialized flight webpage .

Their unique flight search algorithm helps you find the best-unpublished fares so you can travel on a ticket that fits your budget.

Unlike the hotel booking service, SnapTravel’s flight service allows you to conduct your research entirely online as opposed to via messaging apps. Simply put in your travel information, and you can view all the discounted flight options.

You'll also enjoy an additional discount if you refer a friend to sign up for SnapTravel!

Note that if you opt to book through SnapTravel, you will have 20 minutes to confirm your purchase after selecting a flight.

Who Owns SnapTravel?

SnapTravel is owned by SnapCommerce , a platform that uses AI and messaging to connect customers with “the right products at the right prices.” Information about SnapTravel’s founders and advisors can be found on their website.

SnapTravel and SnapCommerce were both founded by Henry Shi and Hussein Fazal.

Fun fact: Initial investors of SnapTravel included NBA star Steph Curry, and the CEO of Expedia, Peter Kern!

Is SnapTravel Legit?

Conde Nast Traveler calls the app the " best new way to get a hotel deal ". But are they really the new best way to find deals?

While they sound really good on paper, the SnapTravel reviews online paint a different picture.

Is SnapTravel legit? If so, why is SnapTravel so cheap? Let's take a look at what other people are saying about SnapTravel.

SnapTravel has an average rating of 4.5/5 stars (TrustPilot), with an A+ rating on Better Business Bureau. Based on SnapTravel reviews, the flight deals service does deliver on the promises and can find exclusive deals at cheap rates.

However, many of the SnapTravel reviews regarding its legitimacy on TrustPilot are written by invited reviewers, which means that SnapTravel requested they write a review after using their services. These reviews should be taken with a grain of salt.

Keep reading to find out what our overall review of SnapTravel is!

Are SnapTravel Flights Legit?

SnapTravel only connects users with cheaper flight deals using AI technology, so SnapTravel is effectively a third-party site and does not directly handle flights or flight experiences. If you have further inquiries about the flights that SnapTravel offers, check out individual airline reviews on the quality instead!

What Are People's Experiences Using SnapTravel?

We understand that it's hard to judge people's experience using star ratings, so what's the deal? How many people have actually used and enjoyed SnapTravel? And what is the consensus among SnapTravel's users of their travel planning app?

If you asked some people about their experiences using SnapTravel on Reddit, you'd get a variety of answers. Plus, there are many other review sites of SnapTravel with lots of opinions on it.

The consensus is that SnapTravel is good for what we say it's good for. People love it for this. Some might have had different varying experiences, which may explain why there are some negative reviews or even complaints on SnapTravel online.

What's the Deal With the SnapTravel Complaints?

If you've been scrolling through SnapTravel review forums through different websites and sources, you've probably come across many negative reviews or feedback about other travelers' experiences with SnapTravel. What exactly are these users' complaints, and are they legit?

Most of the complaints revolve around inconsistencies and communications between SnapTravel and the hotels. This means that SnapTravel might have outdated or incorrect information about the hotel's amenities and regulations. You might also run into problems with SnapTravel not relaying the fees you have paid to the hotel on time.

Regardless of the issue, it's always a good practice to double-check with the hotel's website on its amenities and check with SnapTravel before leaving for your travels. While some have called SnapTravel scams, these are complaints some users have experienced while using SnapTravel and should not reflect the overall app's experiences.

SnapTravel has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Is SnapTravel Refundable?

Unfortunately, if you booked a non-refundable trip through SnapTravel, you will not be issued a refund for any cancellations or changes. Another important small print item is that SnapTravel is not liable for any issues arising with the hotel supplier. If a hotel is unable to honor your reservations, you will be responsible for any fees incurred.

So... What does SnapTravel's official cancellation and refund policy say?

SnapTravel is not responsible for any problems in the event of “delay, cancellation, overbooking, strike, force majeure or other causes beyond our [SnapTravel] direct control.” In those situations, no refund will be issued.

SnapTravel's Response to COVID-19 Related Cancellations

Currently, SnapTravel is offering a flexible policy for refunds on Covid-19 related cancellations, so don't fret!

If you find out that your trip must be canceled due to covid-19 issues but your trip is non-refundable, just shoot a message on their website to the support team and they'll get back to you as soon as possible, hopefully with a full refund.

As customers can use SnapTravel’s services for free, they don’t make their money directly through them. SnapTravel makes a percentage of every hotel booking they sell.

Is SnapTravel Worth It?

So, what do SnapTravel reviews tell us? Is SnapTravel/SuperTravel actually worth using to find the best hotel deals?

If you’re looking to make the booking process for your next travel adventure seamless and easy, you should consider using SnapTravel. With a few taps on your phone, you can be on your way to scoring great deals on Snaptravel hotels and flights!

While there are many mixed SnapTravel reviews out there saying different things, it's easy to get overwhelmed.

The majority of the negative SnapTravel reviews are based on fluctuating and dynamic accommodation prices, which operate similarly to larger travel providers like Booking.com. While they could do a better job at communicating that, the dynamic fluctuation of prices is outside SnapTravel's control.

All that being said, we recommend you to look up deals SnapTravel have to see if you can find the cheap flights or hotels you might want, but definitely keep other alternatives in consideration, such as Hopper !

From the reviews, I would book deals with Snaptravel only if they've got significantly great deals, at the risk of miscommunication and subpar customer support response rate.

My Rating: 3.5/5

  • Low negotiated hotel deals
  • Great/New platform and interface
  • No hidden/surprise fees
  • Great for Last-minute bookings
  • Mixed customer experiences
  • Frequent miscommunication
  • Pricing Discrepancies
  • Confusing rebrand

Great Prices

I have had issues with this company in the past. However lately I decided to give them another chance and so far has been fairly easy and decently priced. The one thing I think is not fair to paying customers is that the customer service is extremely rude and not helpful at all. I was experiencing an issue with their website when I was trying to pay, mind you I had not had a problem the whole week and a half leading up to this incident. I tried multiple cards that had money on them and they We’re still getting declined. I proceeded to called the companies attached to my cards only for them to say try it again through them so I finally track down super travels phone number to get told that I couldn’t use my credit on the account over the phone even though their websitw wasn’t working properly, it was as if the guy on the phone wasn’t even listening to anything I said. Well, they lost a couple of sales from me due to that. Besides that thwy have pretty good prices and the cash back is pretty amazing, I thought it was a scam at first but I kept getting credits, you just have to make sure to use them before they expire and I am still wondering why I cant use my 30$ credits the way I want instead of breaking it up.

Love SuperTravel

So my wife and I decided to take a five day trip to Sunny Isles Florida. We usually stay at the Hilton Hotel on the ocean but last year we decided that we would stay at the Solé’ right next door. When it was time to book, I put in my search engine the hotel name and up came a list of websites offering for this hotel. The cheapest was SuperTravel for $168 for a city view, King bed on the ocean. This hotel is usual $300 plus per night. I was very skeptical because I never have see this site before but figure I would take my chances. They booked the room for $862 for the four nights. We arrived at the hotel and could not believe our eyes when we opened the room to find a small condo room. We had a beautiful modern kitchen with full refrigerator, dishwasher, stove and microwave. The living was a full size, huge separate bedroom and beautiful big bathroom. The best of all was the wrap around huge veranda overlooking the inter coastal water way and to the left, the ocean. I would definitely book with SuperTravel again.

I wouldn’t use this app unless you have money and time to waste!!!!

I really liked this app. It’s apparently a subsidiary of Expedia is what my hotel front desk guy said. Anyway I have booked several trips trough this app but will NEVER use it again after my experience today. I tried to book a single night at the hotel I already had a reservation at because I am currently homeless and surviving day to day like a lot of people in California right now. However during the check out process on my last transaction the app crashed and didn’t push the reservation through. There was a pop up that I took a screenshot of saying to wait a minute and refresh the screen. I did that and it was right back to the check out screen but it apparently changed my dates back to default for tonight instead of tomorrow but that part is not visible on the screen I was looking at…it’s back a screen!!! I immediately noticed the date and went to the front desk. They know me here and told me that unfortunately they can’t fix it so I used the customer service chat on the app and it was seriously AWFUL! Fernando had zero customer care skills and didn’t comprehend my issue. So basically I’m out the money for the reservation that the app messed up and have no place to stay tomorrow night. I even provided screenshots and just got “sorry you feel that way” This hotel is empty all the time. The cost is exactly the same…All that needed to be done is to change the date but NOPE..

What reviewers want you to know

Positive highlights.

  • Great customer service and airport shuttle to airport
  • I literally chose to purchase from the travel site that had the least expensive price for our desired hotel room .

Critical highlights

  • What would've happened if we didn't have another credit card with another thousand dollars on it?
  • I went back down to the front desk and told them it was an error and they told me I booked a king.

“First time user”

First time I've had the pleasure of using Super.com for booking my holiday accommodation and I'm absolutely delighted that I chose to take the plunge and use a company I'd never previously heard of. Everything about my experience is positive. Booking was seamless, communication excellent, so what's not to like. Will certainly be using again and will recommend to my family and friends.

“Worst booking agency ever! Steer clear of the best of the best!”

The same room was offered at two different prices. For $1 more I could book a fully refundable room. I had to cancel my reservation. It stated that my reservation was not refundable. There is no link to connect to someone to help with the cancelation. Their automated phone line puts you in a never-ending loop. Poorly managed company. Avoid using them!

Hi there, the hotel rates we sell are dynamic, which means they're always changing based on demand and availability. We do our best to find the most competitive rates, but have no control over price fluctuations. The taxes and fees that you see in your confirmation voucher are comprised of applicable local taxes & service fees. While charging fees is necessary for running a business, we do try to keep them as low as possible to provide our customers with the best rates.

Can you share a success story using snaptravel? Can you share a success story using snaptravel?

They are a horrible company and with horrible customer service. They talk down to you and even when their website is wrong and they book your room different than what you picked online, they refuse to help you fix it. They threaten you with nonrefundable and if the hotel wants them to call and cancel they will not. They ask for a written letter from the hotel. Really the worst travel site around. You think you are saving money and you truly are not, you are not getting what you think you paid for and then they have the nerve to ask for a huge tip because they tried to help save you money.

Booking number b_11565655. the date should be oct 28/23-29/23 Booking number b_11565655. the date should be oct 28/23-29/23

The question the answer is if you use this company and one little thing goes wrong you can say goodbye to your money. My train canceled the hotel didn't get any money I didn't get any money back and super.com has a secret partner that gets the money but they won't tell you who they are

How do i verify my reservation How do i verify my reservation

Both motels were okay with changing the reservation that was wrong we made in Arizona to putting the reservation to the motel in Lewiston Idaho but these idiots wouldn't help and switch it kept my $75 and I didn't get a room when I asked to speak to the supervisor or higher up manager they refused and hung up on

I cannot accept refund fee. I cannot accept refund fee.

I do not understand, is this a question. They more than likely wont refund anyone. They pretty much refuse to refund anyone and this Travel Booking site asks for TIPS.

How to cancel online subscription fee?

I've never used your services and you're trying to take 15 from me please stop, super.s am has a secret partner. not the hotel. this secret partner keeps your money. i have read so many reviews where people showed at hotel, there, hi it says it includes taxes and fees but does not provide a breakdown of them. chat said to check about tab but no details given so how do i check, can’t see your question ask to get answers from the super.com staff and other customers..

  • How long does shipping take?
  • What is the return policy?
  • Where is the company located?

"It becomes dark enough to pick out bright stars and planets, so it's very dramatic, very startling," Espenak said. "Most people get a very visceral reaction to seeing a total eclipse."

The last total solar eclipse in America was in August 2017, but the seven-year difference between eclipses is "deceptive," according to Espenak.

"If you look previous to 2017, the last one was in 1979," Espenak said. "So it's a little bit deceptive that these two eclipses were in seven years of each other."

PHOTO: Annular solar eclipse seen from Chiayi in southern Taiwan, June 21, 2020.

The next total solar eclipse to occur in the contiguous U.S. won't be until August 2044 in Montana and North Dakota, and the next to span coast-to-coast is slated for 2045, according to NASA .

MORE: Delta offering special flight to view total solar eclipse along the path of totality in April

Comparatively, 2024's total solar eclipse is "better" than 2017's, because the path of totality is almost 60% wider and the duration of the eclipse is about 60% longer, according to Espenak, who explained some locations within the path will experience up to four and a half minutes of the eclipse.

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA .

Due to the fact April's total solar eclipse will be the last of its kind to occur in North America for 20 years, it is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer, told ABC News.

Zeiler compared eclipse day travel to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation," saying four million people are estimated to travel to view it.

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In anticipation of the historic eclipse, a small county in Texas is bracing for a state of emergency due to the sheer volume of expected tourists

In February, Bell County Judge David Blackburn issued a local disaster declaration, saying the county's population of 400,000 residents is expected to double in tourists.

Zeiler said Texas is a prime place for eclipse chasers to travel because it is located in the path of totality and has the best chances for clear skies on eclipse day.

"You want to be in the center of the path for the longest duration," Zeiler explained. "If you have a friend or relative in the path in Texas, and there are 12 million Texans inside the path, that's the spot to go because that's where the best weather prospects are."

MORE: The surprising reason why a Texas county issued a disaster declaration ahead of April total solar eclipse

From the eclipse's decades-long rarity to its staggering duration and path, April 8 brings an exciting opportunity that Espenak says skywatchers shouldn't miss.

"I think seeing a total eclipse should be on everybody's bucket list, and this April is just a golden opportunity," Espenak said. "It's an incredible event that people will remember for their entire lives. They'll be telling their grandchildren about the total eclipse they saw in April of 2024 if they managed to get into the path of totality and have some good weather."

"So I wish everybody fair skies next April," Espenak added.

‘20 or 30 Super Bowls.’ Drivers and Officials Brace for Massive Eclipse Traffic Jams

M elissa Schleig, a postmaster who lives in Strasburg, Virginia, drove more than 400 miles southwest to the Smoky Mountains to see the 2017 solar eclipse. The travel experience was miserable.

“It should have taken us about six to seven hours to go down there but it took us about a little over six hours just to go about two hours south of here. It was insane,” said Schleig, who began to drive down the day before the eclipse.

At least 5 million people traveled for the 2017 eclipse, according to a journal by the Institute of Transportation Engineers, but even more are expected to gather to witness this year’s total solar eclipse on April 8. Already, an estimated 31.6 million people currently live in the roughly 115-mile wide path of totality —compared to the 12 million that did in 2017.

“Having a total solar eclipse pass through the U.S. is kind of like having 20 or 30 Super Bowls happening all at once,” says Richard Fienberg, project manager of the American Astronomical Society's Solar Eclipse Task Force. “So many people are gathering for the spectacle over a long distance.”

Read More : How Cities Around the U.S. Are Celebrating the Eclipse

Transportation agencies are coordinating with the National Weather Service to spot areas of high interest for eclipse viewing to better prepare for traffic delays, but they say the impacts are unavoidable. “The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) knows that there is great interest in this rare solar event, and that’s why we want everyone to be aware of the real traffic and safety impacts,” FHWA Administrator Shailen Bhatt told TIME in an email. “We want people to remember this day and this experience—that may be once in a lifetime—for all the right reasons.”

This year Schleig, who is part of a Facebook eclipse chasing group, is traveling to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls to view the eclipse. And she’s hoping to learn from her 2017 mistakes: she’s planning to avoid the traffic by extending her trip from April 4 through the 10th, instead of driving the day before like she did last time.

How bad will traffic be?

The FHWA says Schleig has the right idea. It is advising people to drive early, and stay longer in the town where they’re viewing the eclipse to avoid traffic. The FHWA says it's hard to predict which cities or states will be most impacted by the eclipse traffic-wise, but they predict up to 5 million people will be traveling to the path of totality between Texas and Maine.

While drivers and officials are looking to the 2017 eclipse for hints of what is to come, traffic will likely be much worse this time. That’s because the 2024 path of totality—the area where the moon will completely obscure the sun—is a 3-hour drive away from 8 major cities with a population greater than 2 million, including Chicago, Houston, and Toronto. By contrast, the 2017 eclipse path of totality was a 3-hour drive away from only three larger metropolitan areas: St. Louis, Kansas City, and Portland, Ore.

Read More : How to Use Your Smartphone to Take Photos of the Solar Eclipse

If the expected 5 million visitors were to leave the path of totality as soon as the eclipse ends, the ensuing traffic would be equivalent to 71 sold out football games ending all at once, according to a journal by the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

Where are people traveling?

Several eclipse chasers, like 62-year-old photographer Beth Hutter, told TIME that they were planning to travel to Texas because it has the lowest chance of cloud cover. “We didn't want to take a chance that the day of the eclipse it [would be] overcast and rainy,” said Hutter, who is traveling from Michigan to Kileen, Texas five days before the eclipse. “We made the mistake of trying to drive home the same day [for the 2017 eclipse]... So thankfully, because we're going to be right there, I don't think we're going to have to deal with the traffic nightmares that most people are going to have.”

Texas Department of Transportation media relations director Adam Hammons says that up to one million out-of-state visitors may be traveling to view the eclipse, in addition to the millions that already live in the state and will likely also be driving to different areas/cities.

Hammons says the eclipse runs through I-35, which is a significant corridor in the state that traverses through small towns as well as larger metro areas like Austin, Dallas, and Fort Worth. “It really goes through a large portion of Texas,” he says. “There’s going to be some possible significant delays on these major corridors and/or farm roads…Give yourself extra travel time. Plan ahead your trip, plan your route,” Drivetexas.org, a website that shares real-time traffic updates, could be helpful in deciding which way to go.

Regardless of where you choose to see the eclipse, Hammons says it's important to have a safe, designated place to park and enjoy the experience—as long as it's off the shoulder of the highway.

Other states like Arkansas, which has a population of some 3 million people , could see anywhere from 300,000 to 1.5 million visitors. (State officials have cited varying estimates .) The most extreme traffic will be seen along AR Highway 70 to Benton, AR Highway 65 from Conway to Greenbrier, and more. "There’s no doubt our Interstates and highways could be tested," Arkansas Department of Transportation Director Lorie H. Tudor told TIME in a statement, "but we have put forth our best planning efforts and we are cautiously optimistic that we are as prepared as possible to address any foreseeable issues that may arise."

New York is another state expecting a high volume of visitors and traffic. Many residents and out-of-state visitors will be traveling to the western and northern regions of the state, with Niagara Falls being an area of high interest. "We are expecting as many as a million people to come to Erie County solely for the eclipse," says Peter Anderson, press secretary for the Erie County executive, where Niagara Falls is based. According to data collected by Priceline and shared with TIME, Buffalo, New York has the second highest average airfare price compared to the travel cost to seven cities along the path of totality— including Dallas, Indianapolis, and Cleveland—at $999, and the most expensive average nightly hotel room cost among those cities listed at $476.

Still, for many of the eclipse watchers, braving bad traffic will be worth it. “It's just one of those things where you just realize your place in the world, and how small you are in comparison to the rest of the universe,” says Hutter. “The world just kind of stops.”

25 Questions (and Answers!) About the Great North American Eclipse

The McDonald Observatory’s guide to one of nature’s most beautiful and astounding events: What you might see, how to view it safely, how astronomers will study it, how animals might react, and some of the mythology and superstitions about the Sun’s great disappearing act.

different-eclipses-NASA

1. What’s happening?

The Moon will cross directly between Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the Sun from view along a narrow path across Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Viewers across the rest of the United States will see a partial eclipse, with the Moon covering only part of the Sun’s disk.

2. When will it happen?

The eclipse takes place on April 8. It will get underway at 10:42 a.m. CDT, when the Moon’s shadow first touches Earth’s surface, creating a partial eclipse. The Big Show—totality—begins at about 11:39 a.m., over the south-central Pacific Ocean. The shadow will first touch North America an hour and a half later, on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Moving at more than 1,600 miles (2,575 km) per hour, the path of totality will enter the United States at Eagle Pass, Texas, at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The lunar shadow will exit the United States and enter the Canadian province of New Brunswick near Houlton, Maine, at 2:35 p.m. (3:35 p.m. EDT).

3. How long will totality last?

The exact timing depends on your location. The maximum length is 4 minutes, 27 seconds near Torreon, Mexico. In the United States, several towns in southwestern Texas will see 4 minutes, 24 seconds of totality. The closer a location is to the centerline of the path of totality, the longer the eclipse will last.

4. What will it look like?

Eclipse veterans say there’s nothing quite like a total solar eclipse. In the last moments before the Sun disappears behind the Moon, bits of sunlight filter through the lunar mountains and canyons, forming bright points of light known as Baily’s beads. The last of the beads provides a brief blaze known as a diamond ring effect. When it fades away, the sky turns dark and the corona comes into view— million-degree plasma expelled from the Sun’s surface. It forms silvery filaments that radiate away from the Sun. Solar prominences, which are fountains of gas from the surface, form smaller, redder streamers on the rim of the Sun’s disk.

5. What safety precautions do I need to take?

It’s perfectly safe to look at the total phase of the eclipse with your eyes alone. In fact, experts say it’s the best way to enjoy the spectacle. The corona, which surrounds the intervening Moon with silvery tendrils of light, is only about as bright as a full Moon.

During the partial phases of the eclipse, however, including the final moments before and first moments after totality, your eyes need protection from the Sun’s blinding light. Even a 99-percent-eclipsed Sun is thousands of times brighter than a full Moon, so even a tiny sliver of direct sunlight can be dangerous!

To stay safe, use commercially available eclipse viewers, which can look like eyeglasses or can be embedded in a flat sheet that you hold in front of your face. Make sure your viewer meets the proper safety standards, and inspect it before you use it to make sure there are no scratches to let in unfiltered sunlight.

You also can view the eclipse through a piece of welder’s glass (No. 14 or darker), or stand under a leafy tree and look at the ground; the gaps between leaves act as lenses, projecting a view of the eclipse on the ground. With an especially leafy tree you can see hundreds of images of the eclipse at once. (You can also use a colander or similar piece of gear to create the same effect.)

One final mode of eclipse watching is with a pinhole camera. You can make one by poking a small hole in an index card, file folder, or piece of stiff cardboard. Let the Sun shine through the hole onto the ground or a piece of paper, but don’t look at the Sun through the hole! The hole projects an image of the eclipsed Sun, allowing you to follow the entire sequence, from the moment of first contact through the Moon’s disappearance hours later.

6. Where can I see the eclipse?

In the United States, the path of totality will extend from Eagle Pass, Texas, to Houlton, Maine. It will cross 15 states: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Tennessee, and Michigan (although it barely nicks the last two).

In Texas, the eclipse will darken the sky over Austin, Waco, and Dallas—the most populous city in the path, where totality (the period when the Sun is totally eclipsed) will last 3 minutes, 51 seconds.

Other large cities along the path include Little Rock; Indianapolis; Dayton, Toledo, and Cleveland, Ohio; Erie, Pennsylvania; Buffalo and Rochester, New York; and Burlington, Vermont.

Outside the path of totality, American skywatchers will see a partial eclipse, in which the Sun covers only part of the Sun’s disk. The sky will grow dusky and the air will get cooler, but the partially eclipsed Sun is still too bright to look at without proper eye protection. The closer to the path of totality, the greater the extent of the eclipse. From Memphis and Nashville, for example, the Moon will cover more than 95 percent of the Sun’s disk. From Denver and Phoenix, it’s about 65 percent. And for the unlucky skywatchers in Seattle, far to the northwest of the eclipse centerline, it’s a meager 20 percent.

The total eclipse path also crosses Mexico, from the Pacific coast, at Mazatlán, to the Texas border. It also crosses a small portion of Canada, barely including Hamilton, Ontario. 7. What causes solar eclipses?

These awe-inspiring spectacles are the result of a pleasant celestial coincidence: The Sun and Moon appear almost exactly the same size in Earth’s sky. The Sun is actually about 400 times wider than the Moon but it’s also about 400 times farther, so when the new Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun—an alignment known as syzygy—it can cover the Sun’s disk, blocking it from view.

8. Why don’t we see an eclipse at every new Moon?

The Moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted a bit with respect to the Sun’s path across the sky, known as the ecliptic. Because of that angle, the Moon passes north or south of the Sun most months, so there’s no eclipse. When the geometry is just right, however, the Moon casts its shadow on Earth’s surface, creating a solar eclipse. Not all eclipses are total. The Moon’s distance from Earth varies a bit, as does Earth’s distance from the Sun. If the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun when the Moon is at its farthest, we see an annular eclipse, in which a ring of sunlight encircles the Moon. Regardless of the distance, if the SunMoon-Earth alignment is off by a small amount, the Moon can cover only a portion of the Sun’s disk, creating a partial eclipse.

9. How often do solar eclipses happen?

Earth sees as least two solar eclipses per year, and, rarely, as many as five. Only three eclipses per two years are total. In addition, total eclipses are visible only along narrow paths. According to Belgian astronomer Jean Meuss, who specializes in calculating such things, any given place on Earth will see a total solar eclipse, on average, once every 375 years. That number is averaged over many centuries, so the exact gap varies. It might be centuries between succeeding eclipses, or it might be only a few years. A small region of Illinois, Missouri, and Kentucky, close to the southeast of St. Louis, for example, saw the total eclipse of 2017 and will experience this year’s eclipse as well. Overall, though, you don’t want to wait for a total eclipse to come to you. If you have a chance to travel to an eclipse path, take it!

10. What is the limit for the length of totality?

Astronomers have calculated the length of totality for eclipses thousands of years into the future. Their calculations show that the greatest extent of totality will come during the eclipse of July 16, 2186, at 7 minutes, 29 seconds, in the Atlantic Ocean, near the coast of South America. The eclipse will occur when the Moon is near its closest point to Earth, so it appears largest in the sky, and Earth is near its farthest point from the Sun, so the Sun appears smaller than average. That eclipse, by the way, belongs to the same Saros cycle as this year’s.

11. When will the next total eclipse be seen from the United States?

The next total eclipse visible from anywhere in the United States will take place on March 30, 2033, across Alaska. On August 22, 2044, a total eclipse will be visible across parts of Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The next eclipse to cross the entire country will take place on August 12, 2045, streaking from northern California to southern Florida. Here are the other total solar eclipses visible from the contiguous U.S. this century:

March 30, 2052 Florida, Georgia, tip of South Carolina May 11, 2078 From Louisiana to North Carolina May 1, 2079 From Philadelphia up the Atlantic coast to Maine September 14, 2099 From North Dakota to the Virginia-North Carolina border

12. What is the origin of the word ‘eclipse?’

The word first appeared in English writings in the late 13th century. It traces its roots, however, to the Greek words “ecleipsis” or “ekleipein.” According to various sources, the meaning was “to leave out, fail to appear,” “a failing, forsaking,” or “abandon, cease, die.”

13. Do solar eclipses follow any kind of pattern?

The Moon goes through several cycles. The best known is its 29.5-day cycle of phases, from new through full and back again. Other cycles include its distance from Earth (which varies by about 30,000 miles (50,000 km) over 27.5 days) and its relationship to the Sun’s path across the sky, known as the ecliptic (27.2 days), among others. These three cycles overlap every 6,585.3 days, which is 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours.

This cycle of cycles is known as a Saros (a word created by Babylonians). The circumstances for each succeeding eclipse in a Saros are similar—the Moon is about the same distance from Earth, for example, and they occur at the same time of year. Each eclipse occurs one-third of the way around Earth from the previous one, however; the next eclipse in this Saros, for example, will be visible from parts of the Pacific Ocean.

Each Saros begins with a partial eclipse. A portion of the Moon just nips the northern edge of the Sun, for example, blocking only a fraction of the Sun’s light. With each succeeding eclipse in the cycle, the Moon covers a larger fraction of the solar disk, eventually creating dozens of total eclipses. The Moon then slides out of alignment again, this time in the opposite direction, creating more partial eclipses. The series ends with a grazing partial eclipse on the opposite hemisphere (the southern tip, for example).

Several Saros cycles churn along simultaneously (40 are active now), so Earth doesn’t have to wait 18 years between eclipses. They can occur at intervals of one, five, six, or seven months.

The April 8 eclipse is the 30th of Saros 139, a series of 71 events that began with a partial eclipse, in the far north, and will end with another partial eclipse, this time in the far southern hemisphere. The next eclipse in this Saros, also total, will take place on April 20, 2042.

14. What about eclipse seasons?

Eclipses occur in “seasons,” with two or three eclipses (lunar and solar) in a period of about five weeks. Individual eclipses are separated by two weeks: a lunar eclipse at full Moon, a solar eclipse at new Moon (the sequence can occur in either order). If the first eclipse in a season occurs during the first few days of the window, then the season will have three eclipses. When one eclipse in the season is poor, the other usually is much better.

That’s certainly the case with the season that includes the April 8 eclipse. It begins with a penumbral lunar eclipse on the night of March 24, in which the Moon will pass through Earth’s outer shadow. The eclipse will cover the Americas, although the shadow is so faint that most skywatchers won’t notice it.

15. How can astronomers forecast eclipses so accurately?

They’ve been recording eclipses and the motions of the Moon for millennia. And over the past half century they’ve been bouncing laser beams off of special reflectors carried to the Moon by Apollo astronauts and Soviet rovers. Those observations reveal the Moon’s position to within a fraction of an inch. Using a combination of the Earth-Moon distance, the Moon’s precise shape, Earth’s rotation and its distance from the Sun, and other factors, astronomers can predict the timing of an eclipse to within a fraction of a second many centuries into the future.

Edmond Halley made the first confirmed solar eclipse prediction, using the laws of gravity devised only a few decades earlier by Isaac Newton. Halley forecast that an eclipse would cross England on May 3, 1715. He missed the timing by just four minutes and the path by 20 miles, so the eclipse is known as Halley’s Eclipse.

16. What are the types of solar eclipses?

Total : the Moon completely covers the Sun.

Annular : the Moon is too far away to completely cover the Sun, leaving a bright ring of sunlight around it.

Partial : the Moon covers only part of the Sun’s disk.

Hybrid : an eclipse that is annular at its beginning and end, but total at its peak.

17. What are Baily’s beads?

During the minute or two before or after totality, bits of the Sun shine through canyons and other features on the limb of the Moon, producing “beads” of sunlight. They were first recorded and explained by Edmond Halley, in 1715. During a presentation to the Royal Academy of Sciences more than a century later, however, astronomer Frances Baily first described them as “a string of beads,” so they’ve been known as Baily’s beads ever since. Please note that Baily’s beads are too bright to look at without eye protection!

18. Will Earth always see total solar eclipses?

No, it will not. The Moon is moving away from Earth at about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) per year. Based on that rate of recession, in about 600 million years the Moon would have moved so far from Earth that it would no longer appear large enough to cover the Sun. The speed at which the Moon separates from Earth changes over the eons, however, so scientists aren’t sure just when Earth will see its final total solar eclipse.

19. How will the eclipse affect solar power?

If your solar-powered house is in or near the path of totality, the lights truly will go out, as they do at night. For large power grids, the eclipse will temporarily reduce the total amount of electricity contributed by solar generation. During the October 14, 2023, annular eclipse, available solar power plummeted in California and Texas. At the same time, demand increased as individual Sun-powered homes and other buildings began drawing electricity from the power grid. Both networks were able to compensate with stations powered by natural gas and other sources.

The power drop during this year’s eclipse could be more dramatic because there will be less sunlight at the peak of the eclipse.

20. What are some of the myths and superstitions associated with solar eclipses?

Most ancient cultures created stories to explain the Sun’s mysterious and terrifying disappearances.

In China and elsewhere, it was thought the Sun was being devoured by a dragon. Other cultures blamed a hungry frog (Vietnam), a giant wolf loosed by the god Loki (Scandinavia), or the severed head of a monster (India). Still others saw an eclipse as a quarrel (or a reunion) between Sun and Moon. Some peoples shot flaming arrows into the sky to scare away the monster or to rekindle the solar fire. One especially intriguing story, from Transylvania, said that an eclipse occurred when the Sun covered her face in disgust at bad human behavior.

Eclipses have been seen as omens of evil deeds to come. In August 1133, King Henry I left England for Normandy one day before a lengthy solar eclipse, bringing prophesies of doom. The country later was plunged into civil war, and Henry died before he could return home, strengthening the impression that solar eclipses were bad mojo.

Ancient superstitions claimed that eclipses could cause plague and other maladies. Modern superstitions say that food prepared during an eclipse is poison and that an eclipse will damage the babies of pregnant women who look at it. None of that is true, of course. There’s nothing at all to fear from this beautiful natural event.

21. How do animals react to solar eclipses?

Scientists haven’t studied the topic very thoroughly, but they do have some general conclusions. Many daytime animals start their evening rituals, while many nighttime animals wake up when the eclipse is over, perhaps cursing their alarm clocks for letting them sleep so late!

During the 2017 total eclipse, scientists observed 17 species at Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, South Carolina. About three-quarters of the species showed some response as the sky darkened. Some animals acted nervous, while others simply headed for bed. A species of gibbon had the most unusual reaction, moving excitedly and chattering in ways the zookeepers hadn’t seen before.

Other studies have reported that bats and owls sometimes come out during totality, hippos move toward their nighttime feeding grounds, and spiders tear down their webs, only to rebuild them when the Sun returns. Bees have been seen to return to their hives during totality and not budge until the next day, crickets begin their evening chorus, and, unfortunately, mosquitoes emerge, ready to dine on unsuspecting eclipse watchers.

A NASA project, Eclipse Soundscapes, is using volunteers around the country to learn more about how animals react to the changes. The project collected audio recordings and observations by participants during the annular eclipse last year, and will repeat the observations this year. Volunteers can sign up at eclipsesoundscapes.org

22. How will scientists study this year’s eclipse?

Astronomers don’t pay quite as much professional attention to solar eclipses as they did in decades and centuries past. However, they still schedule special observations to add to their knowledge of the Sun and especially the inner edge of the corona.

Sun-watching satellites create artificial eclipses by placing a small disk across the face of the Sun, blocking the Sun’s disk and revealing the corona, solar prominences, and big explosions of charged particles known as coronal mass ejections.

Because of the way light travels around the edges of an eclipsing disk, however, it’s difficult to observe the region just above the Sun’s visible surface, which is where much of the action takes place. The corona is heated to millions of degrees there, and the constant flow of particles known as the solar wind is accelerated to a million miles per hour or faster, so solar astronomers really want to see that region in detail. The eclipsing Moon doesn’t create the same effects around the limb of the Sun, so a solar eclipse still provides the best way to look close to the Sun’s surface.

For this year’s eclipse, some scientists will repeat a series of experiments they conducted in 2017 using a pair of highaltitude WB-57 aircraft to “tag team” through the lunar shadow, providing several extra minutes of observations.

Other scientists will use the eclipse to study Earth’s ionosphere, an electrically charged layer of the atmosphere that “bends” radio waves, allowing them to travel thousands of miles around the planet. Sunlight rips apart atoms and molecules during the day, intensifying the charge. At night, the atoms and molecules recombine, reducing the charge.

Physicists want to understand how the ionosphere reacts to the temporary loss of sunlight during an eclipse. They will do so with the help of thousands of volunteer ham radio operators, who will exchange messages with others around the planet. During last October’s annular eclipse, when the Moon covered most but not all of the Sun, the experiment showed a large and immediate change in the ionosphere as the sunlight dimmed.

NASA also will launch three small “sounding” rockets, which loft instruments into space for a few minutes, to probe the ionosphere shortly before, during, and shortly after the eclipse.

Another project will use radar to study changes in the interactions between the solar wind and Earth’s atmosphere, while yet another will use a radio telescope to map sunspots and surrounding regions as the Moon passes across them.

One project will piece together images of the eclipse snapped through more than 40 identical telescopes spaced along the path of totality to create a one-hour movie of the eclipse. The telescopes will be equipped with instruments that see the three-dimensional structure of the corona, allowing solar scientists to plot how the corona changes.

23. What have astronomers learned from eclipses?

Solar eclipses have been powerful tools for studying the Sun, the layout of the solar system, and the physics of the universe.

Until the Space Age, astronomers could see the Sun’s corona only during eclipses, so they traveled around the world to catch these brief glimpses of it.

Eclipses also offered a chance to refine the scale of the solar system. Watching an eclipse from different spots on Earth and comparing the angles of the Moon and Sun helped reveal the relative sizes and distances of both bodies, which were important steps in understanding their true distances.

During an eclipse in 1868, two astronomers discovered a new element in the corona. It was named helium, after Helios, a Greek name for the Sun. The element wasn’t discovered on Earth until a quarter of a century later.

An eclipse in 1919 helped confirm General Relativity, which was Albert Einstein’s theory of gravity. The theory predicted that the gravity of a massive body should deflect the path of light rays flying near its surface. During the eclipse, astronomers found that the positions of background stars that appeared near the Sun were shifted by a tiny amount, which was in perfect agreement with Einstein’s equations.

Today, astronomers are using records of eclipses dating back thousands of years to measure changes in Earth’s rotation rate and the distance to the Moon.

24. How did astronomers study eclipses in the past?

With great effort! From the time they could accurately predict when and where solar eclipses would be visible, they organized expeditions that took them to every continent except Antarctica, on trips that lasted months and that sometimes were spoiled by clouds or problems both technical and human.

During the American Revolution, for example, a group of Harvard scientists led by Samuel Williams received safe passage from the British army to view an eclipse from Penobscot Bay, Maine, on October 21, 1780. Williams slightly miscalculated the eclipse path, though, so the group missed totality by a few miles. (The expedition did make some useful observations, however.)

In 1860, an expedition headed by Simon Newcomb, one of America’s top astronomers, journeyed up the Saskatchewan River, hundreds of miles from the nearest city, braving rapids, mosquitoes, and bad weather. After five grueling weeks, they had to stop short of their planned viewing site, although at a location still inside the eclipse path. Clouds covered the Sun until almost the end of totality, however, so the expedition came up empty.

King Mongkut of Siam invited a French expedition and hundreds of other dignitaries to view an eclipse from present-day Thailand in 1868. He built an observatory and a large compound to house his guests at a site Mongkut himself had selected as the best viewing spot. The eclipse came off perfectly, but many visitors contracted malaria. So did Mongkut, who died a few weeks later.

An expedition in 1914, to Russia, was plagued by both clouds and the start of World War I. The team abandoned its instruments at a Russian observatory and escaped through Scandinavia.

The eclipse of July 29, 1878, offered fewer impediments. In fact, it was a scientific and social extravaganza. The eclipse path stretched from Montana Territory to Texas. Teams of astronomers from the United States and Europe spread out along the path. Thomas Edison stationed his group in Wyoming, where he used a tasimeter, a device of his own creation, to try to measure the temperature of the corona. Samuel Pierpoint Langley, a future secretary of the Smithsonian, was atop Pikes Peak in Colorado. Maria Mitchell, perhaps America’s leading female scientist, decamped to Denver. And Asaph Hall, who had discovered the moons of Mars just the year before, journeyed to the flatlands of eastern Colorado.

Thousands of average Americans joined the festivities, paying outrageous prices for some of the best viewing spots. Some things, it seems, never change.

25. What about lunar eclipses?

While solar eclipses happen during new Moon, lunar eclipses occur when the Moon is full, so it aligns opposite the Sun in our sky. The Moon passes through Earth’s shadow. In a total eclipse, the entire lunar disk turns orange or red. In a partial eclipse, Earth’s inner shadow covers only a portion of the Moon. And during a penumbral eclipse, the Moon passes through the outer portion of Earth’s shadow, darkening the Moon so little that most people don’t even notice it.

Lunar eclipses happen as often as solar eclipses—at least twice per year. This is a poor year for lunar eclipses, however. There is a penumbral eclipse on the night of March 24, with the Moon slipping through Earth’s faint outer shadow, and a partial eclipse on the night of September 17, in which the Moon barely dips into the darker inner shadow. Both eclipses will be visible from most of the United States.

what's super travel

But wait ... there's more!

Need another reason to travel on April 8 — the day the sun goes AWOL?

What would it take to put you in the driver's seat for a five-hour journey to see that rarest of phenomena, visible only in select areas? Namely: A total solar eclipse.

Does the cosmos have a deal for you.

For the same low, low price (nothing) of a spectacular event that will dim the skies from 2:09 p.m. to 4:37 p.m. — maximal darkness will be around 3:25 p.m. — there may be other things visible, too. Things you wouldn't normally see in the daytime. Things you might not see, ever.

A rare spectacle, Baily's Beads. Four — count 'em — planets. And not least, the diabolical "devil comet."

But be aware: You have to go to where the eclipse is total, not partial.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime event," said Gary Swangin, Warren County astronomer-at-large and past director of both the Newark Museum Planetarium and the Panther Academy Planetarium in Paterson.

"It's something that, if you're lucky enough to see it, you'll never forget it," Swangin said.

Half a loaf

Around here, we'll only see a partial eclipse. About 92% coverage. Which may sound like a lot — but there's a big difference between very dim and completely dark. In North Jersey, it might just be dark enough to see the planet Venus, to the lower right of the sun — assuming the weather is clear.

"It's the third brightest object in the sky, so there's a chance," he said.

If you're willing to travel to the zone of totality, that's a different matter.

On April 8, the blackout belt will stretch from the eastern half of Texas, up the southeast tip of Oklahoma, through the middle of Arkansas, to the southeast tip of Missouri, the southeast tip of Illinois, the southern half of Indiana, the northwest part of Ohio, the northwest border of Pennsylvania, up through western New York and northwestern Vermont, to the northern tip of New Hampshire, up to northern Maine.

From here, the closest spot is probably around Syracuse, New York (240 miles away; about 3 hours 50 minutes drive time).

In those places — always assuming the weather is good — you'll be able to see the total eclipse. But it's just possible you'll see more.

Four planets and a comet

The planet Jupiter, for instance. It will be out in the daytime — to the upper left of the sun. Venus, Saturn and Mars will be to the lower right.

But you'll have to be, not just in the zone of totality, but in a spot where the sky is normally clear, and free from light pollution.

"If the area normally has crummy observation, even without the eclipse, you can't expect anything better," he said. "You've got to have good conditions."

Then there's the comet, and a most unusual one. 12P/Pons-Brooks, which happens to be paying us a visit now, is known as the "devil comet" because of its horned appearance.

Scientists have an imagination, too.

"That's a nickname we gave it," Swangin said. "As the object approached the outer areas of the sun, chunks of the comet are broken away, and it forms two double streams. That's why it looks like a devil."

It's a dim object. Every 71.2 years — almost the same cycle as Halley's comet — it comes our way from the outer regions between Neptune and Pluto. You can find it, if you find it, about 6 degrees to the right of Jupiter, Swangin said.

"Depending on where you are, if the conditions are normally very, very dark, you might see it with the naked eye," Swangin said. "But it's not super bright."

If you do look for these objects, be careful not to accidentally look at the sun without protection — it can cause eye damage.

For eclipse watching, you should purchase a pair of solar eclipse glasses: specification number ISO 12312-2. If you use a telescope, make sure it's equipped with a solar filter.

Here's the rub: to see faint objects like a planet or comet, you will probably need to take those dark glasses off, momentarily.

Totality — the minute or more where the sun is completely blotted out — is the time of least risk. Do not look directly at the sun at any point — it's dangerous. But during totality, if you're very careful, you may be able to scan other parts of the sky, as long as you put your glasses on the instant the sun begins to reappear.

"If you look for these objects, you have to be very, very careful," Swangin said.

String of pearls

The eclipse itself is the most spectacular thing you'll see on that day — or maybe any day. And one thing to look for, as the moon's shadow overtakes the sun and plunges the world into darkness, is Baily's Beads.

In the moment before the sun is blotted completely out and the fiery corona appears around the black disc, you may see a magical phenomenon — a string of incandescent pearls, at the very rim of the disc.

This gorgeous eclipse effect, named after 19th-century British astronomer Francis Baily who discovered it, is caused by the sun’s rays shining around the moon’s pockmarked surface.

"It's the light, shining between the valleys of the mountains," Swangin said. "When you look at it from afar it looks like a string of beads. Very pretty."

All this stuff can be very diverting. But keep this in mind: Totality only lasts about 90 seconds to four minutes, depending on your location. So Swangin's advice is, make the sun your priority.

"You see it, and you think you have all the time in the world," he said. "But you should spend the most time with the corona. That's the whole idea of going to see the eclipse. You may get lucky and see a planet. If they pop out, that's great. But don't spend valuable time looking for a planet when you could be looking at the eclipse."

Up to a Trillion Cicadas Are About to Emerge in the U.S.

Two periodical cicada broods are appearing in a 16-state area in the Midwest and Southeast for the first time in centuries. Can you get rid of them? Do they bite you? We answer your questions.

A single cicada with red eyes rests on a ledge.

By Aimee Ortiz

In a rare occurrence, a trillion cicadas from two different broods are expected to begin appearing in the Midwest and Southeast regions of the United States at the end of April.

It’s the first time since 1803 that Brood XIX, or the Great Southern Brood, and Brood XIII, or the Northern Illinois Brood, will appear together in an event known as a dual emergence.

Thomas Jefferson was president the last time that the Northern Illinois Brood’s 17-year cycle aligned with the Great Southern Brood’s 13-year period. After this spring, it’ll be another 221 years before the groups, which are geographically adjacent, appear together again.

A roughly 16-state area will be center stage for these periodical cicadas, which differ from those that appear annually in smaller numbers.

Forested areas, including urban green spaces, are more likely to see higher numbers of cicadas than agricultural regions. To put into perspective just how many of these bugs could emerge, one trillion cicadas, each just over an inch long, would cover 15,782,828 miles if they were placed end to end, said Floyd W. Shockley, an entomologist and collections manager at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

“That cicada train would reach to the moon and back 33 times,” Dr. Shockley said.

When are the cicadas coming out?

The first cicadas are expected to start emerging in late April. Temperature determines when they come out, said Gene Kritsky, a retired professor of biology at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, and the author of several books on cicadas, including “A Tale of Two Broods.”

Professor Kritsky said that first the soil needs to reach 64 degrees Fahrenheit, about six inches deep, and “then you get a good soaking rain, and that’s when they really pop,” he said.

They’ll use their forelegs to tunnel out from the earth, their beady red eyes looking for a spot where they can peacefully finish maturing. A few days after they emerge and molt, the males will start buzzing in an effort to find a mate, a slow-building crescendo of noise that as a chorus can be louder than a plane .

Where will they be?

The first waves of cicadas will emerge in northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, northern Georgia, and up into western South Carolina, Professor Kritsky said.

Then they’ll surface in central North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and northern Arkansas, followed by southern Missouri, Southern Illinois and western Kentucky . Finally, he said, the cicadas will appear throughout central and northern Missouri and Illinois, northwestern Indiana, southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa.

How long will the dual emergence last?

The Midwest and Southeast should be buzzing for about six weeks.

In most cases, Dr. Shockley said, the cicadas, which live about a month, will die not far from where they had emerged.

Are cicadas dangerous?

Cicadas don’t bite or sting, nor do they carry any diseases. But since they’re “not great fliers and even worse landers,” cicadas often end up on sidewalks and city streets, where they can be squished by people or cars and “could conceivably make things slick.”

“In urban areas, there will be sufficient numbers to necessitate removal of their bodies,” Dr. Shockley said. “But rather than throwing in the trash or cleaning up with street sweepers, people should consider them basically free fertilizer for the plants in their gardens and natural areas.”

If you have a dog that likes to eat them, it’s not good to let them gorge themselves on the insects because it can lead to intestinal blockage, said Professor Kritsky.

How do I get rid of cicadas?

The short answer is: You don’t. If you have delicate plants that you want to protect, then use special netting created for that purpose.

The bugs are beneficial to the environment, acting as natural tree gardeners. The holes they leave behind when they emerge from the ground help aerate the soil and allow for rainwater to get underground and nourish tree roots in hot summer months. The slits they make in trees can cause some branches to break, and the leaves then turn brown in a process known as “flagging,” which is a kind of natural pruning. When the branch grows again, the fruits it yields will tend to be larger. When they die, the cicadas’ rotting bodies provide nutrients that trees need.

John R. Cooley, a biology professor at the University of Connecticut, said that his best advice for people living in the regions of the dual emergence is to let the bugs be.

“The forest is where they live,” he said. “They are a part of the forest. Don’t try to kill them. Don’t try to spray insecticide, all that kind of thing. That’s just going to end badly because there are more than you could possibly kill with insecticide. You’d end up killing everything.”

Is CERN activating the world’s most powerful particle accelerator for the April 8 eclipse? No

Cern restarted its large hadron collider after a regular winter stop for maintenance. it is unrelated to the eclipse. .

what's super travel

As people around the country await the April 8 total eclipse, conspiracy theories about a Switzerland-based nuclear research facility have some social media users on edge. In their view is CERN, also known as the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

“Why is CERN being reactivated on April 8, the same day as the infamous eclipse?” asked a  March 29 Facebook post , referencing what it called the group’s plan to activate “the large hadron collider” on the day of the eclipse. “My gut instinct is that something really big is being planned for that day… perhaps a total takedown of both the grid and society in general worldwide.” In  another post  April 1, a man in a baseball cap speculated that CERN is deliberately starting back up April 8 to “open up a gateway, a portal.”

It is not unusual for scientists to conduct research during an eclipse, when the sun’s corona becomes visible and areas in totality go briefly dark in the moon’s shadow.  Total solar eclipses   allow researchers “to study Earth’s atmosphere under uncommon conditions.” NASA, for example, is launching three sounding rockets on the day of the eclipse to study its effects on the ionosphere (a mission that also became a  subject of   misinformation ).

But CERN’s research is different. The primary research focus of CERN — an acronym derived from the French name “Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire” — is  particle physics , or “the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces acting between them.” The organization seeks to find answers about the  universe’s fundamental structure .

CERN houses the Large Hadron Collider, the  most powerful particle accelerator in the world , which measures around 16.8 miles (27 kilometers) in circumference. The collider’s aim, as  Britannica explains , is to “understand the fundamental structure of matter by re-creating the extreme conditions that occurred in the first few moments of the universe according to the big-bang model.”

CERN spokesperson Sophie Tesauri told PolitiFact in an email that the collider’s activities have nothing to do with the April 8 eclipse.

“What we do at CERN is doing particle physics with accelerators such as the LHC, and this has little to do with astrophysics in a direct way,”  Tesauri said. “So there is no link between the solar eclipse on Monday 8th April, and what we do at CERN.”

CERN has an  accelerator complex  composed of machines with “increasingly higher energies.” A beam of particles is injected by one machine to the next one, bringing the beam to a higher energy — and the Large Hadron Collider is the last element in this complex.

“Hadrons” are a group of particles that include protons and ions. In the Large Hadron Collider,  two beams  travel in opposite directions at nearly light speed and are made to collide. In 2012, Large Hadron Collider experiments led to the discovery of the  Higgs boson particle , a particle named for British physicist Peter Higgs, who in the 1960s postulated about the existence of a particle that interacted with other particles at the beginning of time to provide them with their mass.

Tesauri told PolitiFact that the accelerator complex is restarted every year after a brief winter technical stop, when beam production ceases so that the accelerators can undergo maintenance. Restarting an accelerator like the Large Hadron Collider “requires a full commissioning process in order to check that all equipment works properly.”

“Now that all the checks have been performed, the LHC is ready to provide particle collisions to the LHC experiments, and first collisions for this year should actually happen today 5th April,” Tesauri said in her email. “This will mark the beginning of the physics run for 2024.”

The beams were initially expected to enter collision April 8, according to a  March 14 report . It said, “Depending on how work progresses, this milestone may shift forwards or backwards by a few days.”

On April 5, CERN  announced  that the Large Hadron Collider achieved its first stable beams in 2024, “marking the official start of the 2024 physics data-taking season.” The statement said that from March 8 to April 5, the Large Hadron Collider was set up to handle the beam and tested for any issues.

“Although the solar eclipse on 8 April will not affect the beams in the LHC, the gravitational pull of the moon, like the tides, changes the shape of the LHC because the machine is so big,” CERN’s announcement said. This phenomenon is not unique to an eclipse; a  2012 news release  discussed distortions in the machine brought about by a full moon.

According to CERN’s frequently asked questions page, the Large Hadron Collider is  expected to run over 20 years , “with several stops scheduled for upgrades and maintenance work.”

Conspiracy theories surrounding CERN’s work have been circulating for  years . In a statement to  Verify  fact-checkers, CERN said that its research “captures the imagination of lots of people, which is why CERN has been featured in a lot of science fiction books / even movies, around the world.” CERN said works inspired by its research are fictional and “should not be confused with the actual scientific research.”

False claims about the group’s work are so common that the organization addresses some common theories on its  FAQ page : No, it won’t “open a door to another dimension,” and no, it won’t “generate black holes in the cosmological sense.”

We rate the claim that CERN is activating its Large Hadron Collider in connection with the April 8 solar eclipse False.

News & features, winter center, total solar eclipse cloud forecast: will clouds spoil your view.

Clouds aren't the only concern for eclipse viewers. Severe weather could present problems for thousands traveling to and from viewing destinations.

Published Apr 1, 2024 9:23 AM PDT | Updated Apr 8, 2024 11:52 AM PDT

What will make this year’s eclipse different from the one in 2017? When will the next one be in the U.S.? We’re answering those questions and much more.

The final countdown is underway! In just a few hours, the moon's shadow casts part of the United States into darkness for a few fleeting moments, and the deciding factor of whether or not people in the path of totality see the event may boil down to one thing: clouds.

The eclipse takes place on Monday, April 8, and for areas in the path of totality, it will be an afternoon affair, with the exact timing varying depending on your location. People outside of the path of totality will still be able to see a partial solar eclipse as long as clouds don't spoil the show.

AccuWeather's latest total solar eclipse cloud forecast is looking promising for some but concerning for others, AccuWeather lead long-range forecaster Paul Pastelok said. Most places in the vicinity of the path of totality will have to deal with some level of clouds, whether high or low. But there are some areas with good viewing expected.

what's super travel

Where will the best weather be for viewing the eclipse?

The best viewing near the path of totality is from Missouri to Ohio and most of New England. Some high clouds will block the viewing at times from Dallas to Amarillo, but the skies will still offer a decent showing.

"The clearing zone is pushing quickly across Indiana and Ohio this morning. However, some high clouds will continue to streak south to north in this region," Pastelok said. "Viewing looks good for cities like Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland and possibly improving in Pittsburgh during the eclipse."

The best areas to watch with more sunshine will be eastern and northern New England, eastern Carolinas and Georgia, and a narrow band from southern New Mexico, central Plains and Ohio Valley. In addition, the viewing looks better in Florida and California, away from the path of totality.

"Major cities like Los Angeles, El Paso, New York City, Boston and Raleigh should all have nice views of the eclipse from start to finish," Pastelok said.

What areas face a cloudy forecast for Monday?

Places along or near the path of totality with more adverse viewing conditions due to low to mid-level clouds are from southeastern Texas to western and central Pennsylvania and parts of western and central New York state.

"Other areas with poor viewing conditions will be from Wisconsin westward through South Dakota and Nebraska to Washington and Oregon," AccuWeather long-range meteorologist Joe Lundberg explained.

Severe weather threat to eclipse viewers

In addition to the cloud forecast, there are a few factors involved in the weather pattern after the eclipse that could affect those traveling from viewing locations. Strong winds, dangerous lightning strikes, hail and perhaps a few tornadoes could threaten those traveling back home Monday night and Tuesday.

what's super travel

Showers and drenching thunderstorms can occur across east Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley on Monday and slowly move northward into southern Oklahoma later in the day and night. Strong winds, dangerous lightning strikes, hail and perhaps a few tornadoes could threaten those traveling home from eclipse viewing the night of April 8 and during the day of April 9. Areas along and north of Interstate 10 in Texas may have to deal with severe thunderstorms during this period.

AccuWeather Senior Director of Forecasting Operations, Dan DePodwin is urging eclipse travelers to be aware of their surroundings. “With so many people traveling to unfamiliar areas and camping or staying in an RV, it’s important to take a few minutes to locate your nearest storm shelter. It may be a sturdy restroom building, campground office, a nearby public storm shelter, or even a 24-hour retail store,” he said.

what's super travel

The slow-moving storms can lead to flooded roadways, especially along interstates 10, 20 and 30 from central Texas to the western Tennessee Valley during this period. Flooding downpours can impact interstates 20, 30 and 40 across northeastern Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky and Tennessee Monday night into Tuesday.
