Every time we get an itch to head back down to Music City, we always head to the Ole Smoky location on 6th and Peabody right after dropping off our bags. Not only do they make some of the best moonshine in Tennessee, but their Nashville location hosts a fun bar serving all the live country music and hot chicken that you would expect. From what we’ve heard, the Ole Smoky Pigeon Forge distillery is a pretty great time too.

Make no mistake though. Just because Ole Smoky specializes in flavored moonshine doesn’t mean they don’t distill some amazing whiskey as well. Their barrelhouse distillery in Gatlinburg makes some of the best whiskey and moonshine in Tennessee, complete with group tastings.

Located in Old Mill Square, this Pigeon Forge distillery is a historic icon and has one of the oldest continually operated gristmills in the country.

Like Ole Smokey, the folks at Old Forge produce and serve a wide variety of different spirits. Bourbon is what made them famous, but if that’s not what you’re in the mood for, they offer several other award-winning drinks, such as vodka, cream liqueurs, their famous 1830 moonshine, and more.

What Is Tennessee Whiskey?

Before you explore Tennessee whiskey distilleries, here’s a brief explainer of some of the products you’ll encounter.

Whiskey , in general, is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from a fermented grain mash that is aged in oak barrels.

The differences among whiskeys lie in the types of grain and the proportions of each grain used in the mash, the distilling process, the type of wood used in the aging barrels, and many other aspects of its production.

Bourbon is whiskey made in the USA, made from mash that’s at least 51% corn, aged in new charred white oak barrels, and had no additional coloring or flavoring.

Tennessee whiskey is whiskey made in the USA filtered through sugar maple charcoal before aging in a process called the Lincoln County Process.

Moonshine , affectionately called “white lightning,” is a clear, unaged whiskey with at least 80% corn base and extremely high alcohol content. It got its name from its illegal origins during Prohibition (made under cover of night, in the moonlight) but is now being produced legally.

Note that they spell whisky the Scottish way, without the “e.”

3. Prichard’s Distillery

Prichard’s Distillery handcrafts their American distilled spirits in small batches, with their quality rums and whiskeys being distilled in copper pots, a technique that has been around for more than a hundred years, and stored in charred white oak barrels.

Small-batch distilling means stricter, more hands-on quality control by the master distiller, resulting in flavors that are human-approved.

Their Tennessee whiskey is the only Tennessee whiskey labeled as such to not to undergo the Lincoln County Process, due to an exemption in the law.

The first Prichard’s Distillery location was opened in 1999 by owner and master distiller Phil Prichard, a descendant of Benjamin Prichard who opened and operated Prichard’s Distillery back in 1825.

H Clark Distillery is a small-batch distillery that opened in 2014, making it the first legal distillery in Williamson County in over 100 years.

Their spirits are produced in the old town Granary, the same building local farmers used to store grains before loading them into trains for export.

Leiper’s Fork Distillery is another new player in the Tennessee whiskey industry, aiming to bring back the history and heritage of small-batch production.

Opened in 2016 by Lee and Lynlee Kennedy, they only use local grains and limestone-filtered water to create their signature products.

The retail shop and tasting room are housed in a log home originally built in 1829.

6. Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery

Opened in 2015 right in the heart of Chattanooga, Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery is the first legal distillery in Chattanooga in over 100 years.

With over 200 barrels containing over 100 recipes in their cellars, every visit to their Experimental Distillery provides a glimpse of the past, present, and future of Chattanooga-crafted whiskey.

Distillery tours include a history lesson of distilling in Chattanooga, a peek into their manufacturing process, a visit to their barrel room, and a taste test in their tasting room.

7. Old Forge Distillery

Old Forge Distillery is nestled on the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains creating small-batch Tennessee spirits using pure mountain spring water and grains that are ground on The Old Mill, one of the oldest continually operated gristmills in the country.

Their flavored moonshines are inspired by flavors from kitchens across the Old Mill Square as well as the Old Mill Candy Kitchen and Creamery.

But Old Forge Distillery is more than just moonshine. They now have plenty of other product offerings, including rum, vodka, bourbon, gin, and flavored cream liqueur.

8. Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine: The Barrelhouse

Ole Smoky’s roots can be traced back to the early settlers of the Great Smoky Mountains, and their moonshine is known for its authenticity and artistry.

Ole Smoky has multiple locations, and the Barrelhouse location specializes in whiskey. Ole Smoky Whiskey is aged in hand-picked white oak barrels, and the Barrelhouse is where you can experience their straight whiskey as well as flavored whiskeys.

If you’d like to sample their classic product moonshine, you can visit their original moonshine distillery, The Holler , just walking distance away from the Barrelhouse, or The Barn in Pigeon Forge.

9. Sugarlands Distilling Company

Sugarlands Distilling Company pride themselves on having one foot in tradition and the other foot in innovation.

Sugarlands opened its distillery in March 2014 to distill its flagship Sugarlands Shine moonshine products, as well as the Roaming Man Straight Rye Whiskey and their Sippin’ Cream cream liqueurs.

They’ve also partnered with the Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners Legends to produce their recipes and with Nascar to produce a limited edition line.

The Sugarlands Still House is open for tours, tastings, and live music, providing their visitors an authentic Tennessee distilling experience.

Distilleries in West Tennessee

Located between the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers, West Tennessee is famous for its iconic artists, unique outdoor experiences, and historic landmarks.

If Nashville is known as Music City and East Tennessee is known for bluegrass, Memphis is known as the home of the blues and rock ‘n’ roll.

Here is the only distillery in West Tennessee (hopefully not the last).

10. Old Dominick Distillery

Old Dominick Whiskey was founded in 1866 by Domenico Canale, and in 1880, the Dominick Toddy was born. Prohibition came and went, Domenico Canale passed away, and the recipe was lost in time.

When an unopened bottle of Old Dominick Toddy was discovered in 2013, Chris and Alex Canale, Domenico’s great-great-grandchildren, planned to open a world-class distillery in Domenico’s honor.

In 2016, they produced the first legal batch of Tennessee whiskey in Memphis since the Prohibition.

Today, Old Dominick Distillery is a 100-year-old, 50,000-square-foot building complex with a whiskey distillery, tasting room, retail spirits shop, meeting and event space, and a bar and restaurant on the rooftop.

What to Expect When Visiting Tennessee Distilleries

If you’ve been to a distillery tour before, you might have expectations for Tennessee distilleries. However, the laws that dictate what a distillery can and cannot provide may vary from one state to another. Here are some highlights of what you can expect on your visit.

Tennessee distilleries can serve samples up to half an ounce per product offering. Distilleries that have more than a few products usually limit the number of samples they give out to 8 or 10.

Samples may be free while on a tasting tour, but some distilleries may still charge for them.

They may also serve mixed drinks as long as the spirit is made at the distillery.

Tennessee whiskey distilleries can sell bottles at the distillery itself, up to 25 750-mL bottles per visitor per day.

Get your Tennessee Whiskey Trail passport from your first stop on the trail, or download the official app . Collect ink stamps on your physical passport or digital stamps on your app and earn a free t-shirt when you complete them.

You’ll also hear some of these terms when you visit the whiskey distilleries. Here’s what they mean.

• Angel’s share – the amount of liquid lost in the barrel while aging
• Barrel proof – the proof whiskey is aged before being bottled
• Dram – a shot of whiskey
• Extraction – when the liquid pulls in other flavors, such as from the charcoal in the Lincoln County Process, or the oak barrel where it ages
• Mash – the mixture of cooked grains and water before yeast is added to start fermentation
• Mash bill – the recipe; the grains and their ratios used to make whiskey
• Proof – the measurement of beverage alcohol on a scale of 200. For instance, a 100 proof spirit contains 50% alcohol by volume.
• Whiskey thief – a tubular instrument used by a master distiller to extract small portions of whiskey from a barrel for sampling
• Whiskey flight – a sample serving of multiple whiskeys designed to provide variety and compare a range of spirits

Tips When Planning Your Trip

Here are some tips to have the best experience possible.

Leave the children at home or at the hotel. Most distillery tours aren’t exactly kid-friendly. Kids would probably get bored with the explainers, there may be equipment or sections of the distillery that are dangerous to them, and other adults on the tour may not be understanding when your kids start to fuss.

Use the Tennessee Whiskey Trail’s Trip Planner . There many different ways you can explore the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, and they know it.

Their Trip Planner contains suggestions of trail routes you can take, depending on what type of experience you want to have, including sightseeing and restaurant recommendations.

If you want to visit all 26 distilleries in a single trip, they have a 10-day itinerary. Or if you only have a weekend free, you can plan around the Nashville distilleries, or around East Tennessee.

They also have suggested itineraries for those who want to experience the great outdoors, Tennessee’s foodie scene, or the music scene.

If you’re making the trip arrangements yourself, call ahead. Making an appointment at least a day ahead ensures that you have a definite timeslot on that day. They can give you more information about what to expect from your tour. Plus, it’s just good manners.

Transportation is important. The last thing you want to be doing on a whiskey distillery tour is counting your glasses or doing a sobriety test after every distillery visit.

If you’re in a city, plan to take public transportation. In the countryside? Designate a sober driver or hire a car and driver.

Look but don’t touch! Remember that you’re not visiting a museum; everything is operational. You might burn yourself on a still, or ruin a perfectly good batch of whiskey if you dip your fingers into their mash tanks.

Keep an open mind. The distillery staff know their own products more than you do. Be open to their suggestions about what you should try.

Sip, don’t shoot. You didn’t go to a frat party and that whiskey flight is not a line of shots you’re asked to knock back on a dare.

A whiskey tasting room is where you can savor the whiskey; swirl it around the glass, smell its aroma, and savor the taste on your tongue.

Space out your visits. Stop for meals and snacks in between your visits, and bring plenty of water to hydrate. Don’t stack your day with back-to-back tastings; showing up at a distillery obviously intoxicated or drunk is a surefire way to be turned away or kicked out.

The best time to go on a whiskey trail is during the spring or fall. Summer is peak tourist season for Tennessee, especially in the Nashville area. Hotels and other accommodations are fully booked and expensive, and getting a timeslot for a distillery tour may be nearly impossible.

Spring in Tennessee can be quite beautiful when flowers are in full bloom. Fall offers another kind of beauty when the leaves dramatically change color. For both seasons, day temperatures are mild, humidity is low, and the nights are cool.

The JD distillery has been on my bucket list for years and we finally made the trip to Tennessee to do it! We booked through Viator and we had the confirmation and tickets straight away. Clear instructions on where to meet and Frank our bus driver was brilliant. Made everyone feel at ease with some jokes and some fantastic knowledge of where to eat in Lynchburg and Nashville. The drive was 1.5 hours from Nashville and luckily we got on the 11:15 tour so around half an hour to get a bottle of Jack in the shop and get it engraved to remember our trip. Rachel was so helpful at the distillery and the tour was taken by Chion D- shouts to him for his enthusiasm and clear passion for JD and whiskey. The tour was amazing and more than I hoped for. The $10 JD slushies are a must. We did a tasting at the end of the tour in one of the barrels houses and again this was amazing. My partner who isn’t a massive whiskey fan even enjoyed this part! We then had about 1.5 hours in the Lynchburg square which in our opinion is enough- we grabbed a sub from one of the small family run places and ate those outside JD is in the pretty gardens they have. We went into the general store in town and bought some JD merch and received free shot glasses as we did the tour and spent over $10 on store. Take note- you can only buy the JD whiskey at the distillery as Lynchburg is in a dry county. So make sure you purchase those before or after your tour. The bus loaded back up at 14:15 with a 14:30 departure. Again Frank made some jokes and kept us entertained whilst we waited for other passengers. It was very cramped. When we arrived at the distillery we had two hours to walk around the small town before our tour. The tour was 1.5 hours long and if you wanted a JD drink for the tour it cost you $10. JD’s story was interesting and the property beautiful. The pick up and drop off point from downtown Nashville was convenient and it was a comfortable 90 minute bus ride with a pleasant driver. It might have been a better ride had the driver spoken and explained more about the area but it was fine to just sit back and relax. The bus ride is pure convenience and comfort and does not involve anything more than a comfortable ride to and from the distillery. The tour really begins once you arrive at the actual distillery and was really excellent, enjoyable, and well organized. Our guide, Kim, was amazing, funny, super knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The history came alive with her and we learned so much. The samples tasting was also a great and informative experience. The distillery handles crowds really well and it was fun to explore the town square afterwards as well. It is important to mention that the tour is an outdoor tour going in and out of the various buildings and requires standing and walking up and down hills and steps for about 90 minutes. (If someone has difficulty with walking and climbing up and down steps, check with the distillery or see if they are any alternatives). There was plenty of time after the tour and the day did not feel rushed. I always enjoyed Jack Daniel’s, but after the tour, I’m even more of a fan. And a more informed one too. Old Tennessee Distilling Co. used to be known as Thunder Road Distillery and is located in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains right off Exit 407. Every bottle is handcrafted from scratch. The whiskeys start with heirloom corn that’s grown and ground right in Tennessee! The whiskey is distilled in a pot still to maintain the full grain flavor, and the distillate is controlled to a very narrow proof range to guarantee only the best product is released to their customers!

The Ole Smoky Moonshine Barn is a can’t-miss stop along the Tennessee Whiskey Trail! Located at The Island shopping and entertainment complex, the Barn is a fun place to sample some shine, listen to live bluegrass, and chat with moonshine experts. The Ole Smoky Barn has been known to host free concerts from big-name musical acts, such as Easton Corbin, the Soggy Bottom Boys, and Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters.

In addition to their excellent moonshine, Ole Smoky also makes traditional whiskey at their Barrelhouse location. Aged in white oak barrels, this whiskey comes in a number of creative flavors, including Mango Habanero, Salty Watermelon, and Root Beer. As with all of the distilleries in Gatlinburg, samples are $5 (in exchange for a coupon) and tours are free.

Kentucky may have more barrels of whiskey barrels aging in warehouses than they have people, but Tennessee has nothing to be ashamed of. The Tennessee Whiskey Trail is a great guide to distilleries to visit across the state, but if you want to stay a little closer to Nashville, here’s a list of spirits pros who are doing some remarkable things with grain, water, and yeast.

Nashville Barrel Co.

Nashville While there aren’t any actual stills at Nashville Barrel Company’s facility, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t integral in the process of creating their spectacular spirits. Their talented team selects exceptional barrels from various distillers and further ages them, blends batches and bottles unique products that consumers can buy from their bottle shop or in liquor stores across the country. Visitors can sample various products or even choose from individual casks to take home a souvenir that simply can’t be found anywhere else.

Tennessee Legend

Nashville Tennessee Legend has facilities across the state where they offer a wide variety of flavored moonshines, whiskeys, and other spirits. A trip to their Marathon Village tasting room is a fun distraction where trained spirits guides will share the history of the former automobile factory and the story of Tennessee moonshine. They also offer free tastings of their products and a peek through a window at their production process. You can also pick up a few bottles to take home as a memento.

Wheeler’s Raid Distillery

Nolensville Distance from Nashville: 45 minutes Named for a notable Civil War battle fought in the area, Wheeler’s Raid specializes in premium bourbons and ryes that they select, finish in new barrels and blend to create brand-new spirits. Their facility also features an excellent live music venue where guests can sip on crafty cocktails and enjoy performances through a state-of-the-art sound system every Friday and Saturday night. They also offer public tastings and tours Tuesday through Sunday.

Southern Collective Spirit Co.

Nashville Southern Collective Spirit Co. is another company that leverages their talents at picking single barrels produced by larger distilleries into a unique experience where visitors can taste various samples and select their own blend. Purchasers can even design the label that goes on the bottle they take home to share with friends and brag about. Starting out with outstanding products to choose from, it’s hard to mess them up.

Leatherwood Distillery

Clarksville Distance from Nashville: 1 hour This veteran-owned distillery started out with an emphasis on flavored moonshines but has lately released some impressive bourbons and a rye whiskey. Of course, you can certainly taste your way through a flight of exotic flavors of moonshine ranging from blueberry and apple pie to elderberry and jalapeño-lemon. The atmosphere at the distillery gets even more festive on weekends when they feature live music along with a menu of cocktails and pub grub.

Corsair Distillery

Wedgewood Houston and Marathon Village South of the city’s downtown, this trendy neighborhood houses a craft distillery started by two childhood friends who first started brewing beer and wine in their garage. The first Nashville craft distillery in more than a half century, Corsair is now making a name for itself winning more than 450 medals in national and international spirit competitions offering everything from gin to rye whiskey and a novel triple-smoked American single malt. You can even learn how to whip up a cocktail of your own at one of the monthly cocktail creation sessions after partaking in one of the many afternoon distillery tours.

Company Distilling

Thompson’s Station Distance from Nashville: 32 minutes Formerly known as H Clark Distilling after founder Heath Clark, an attorney who advocated for legislation allowing distilling in Williamson County, TN in 2009 for the first time since pre-Prohibition, Company Distilling changed its name in 2020 after bringing on new investors and the former master distiller for Jack Daniels, Jeff Arnett. This new dream team developed a novel whiskey aged in oak barrels and finished with maple wood and plans to open a second location with a restaurant and tasting room soon in Townsend, Tennessee. Tours are offered daily at the Thompson’s Station facility from noon to 5 pm.  

Ole Smoky Distillery

SoBro Trading mainly in flavored moonshines, Ole Smoky is a destination distillery/brewery in SoBro just a few blocks from Nashville’s happening Lower Broad party district. In addition to the massive gift shop and tasting room, Ole Smoky’s 6th & Peabody complex features an outdoor area with yard games and massive screens for watching sports. Most visitors go home with at least a jar or two of ‘shine, but don’t miss out on their line of flavored whiskeys if that’s your sort of thing.

Big Machine Distillery

SoBro and Berry Hill The former Tenn South Distillery changed its name and focus after being purchased by the music mogul behind Big Machine Records. Along with the original production facility in Lynnville, TN, two new tasting rooms in Nashville feature platinum-filtered premium vodka plus spiked coolers, drink mixers, and cocktail kits. While the ancient distilleries of Scotland probably aren’t quaking in their kilts over the competition, Big Machine does a good job staying in their lane and providing a good time.

Standard Proof Whiskey Co.

Downtown This rye-focused spirits company was started by a bartender who discovered how delicious a blend of coffee and rye is by serving it after hours to his friends. Standard Proof’s product line has expanded to include additional rye infusions ranging from pecan to ginger to mint, along with a couple of aged straight rye whiskeys as well. The downtown tasting room is open seven days a week with live music on Wednesday nights and two cocktail classes a day from Tuesday through Sunday.

Short Mountain Distillery

Woodbury Distance from Nashville: 1 hour 15 minutes This small-batch distillery was best known for its authentic moonshine when it opened using recipes handed down from “retired amateur distillers” in the area. They’ve since added a few whiskeys to their repertoire, including the first Tennessee whiskey made using 100% organic grains and malts. If you’re so inclined, you can even take a private mixology class for groups on location to learn from the experts.

George Dickel Distillery

Tullahoma Distance from Nashville: 1 hour 11 minutes Nestled in the beautiful scenery of rural Tennessee, this distillery was established as Cascade Hollow Distillery by Nashville merchant George Dickel back in 1878 and remains one of the oldest distilleries in Tennessee. Now the brand offers a wide range of traditional hearty whiskys including various ages of Tennessee whisky, a charcoal-mellowed rye and periodic special small batch releases under the Cascade Moon brand. Feel free to stock up on funky souvenirs at the gift shop that mimics an old-school country general store, after enjoying the one-hour tour offered daily. Whatever you do, just don't argue that they should spell Dickel whisky with an "e"—despite producing American hooch, the company prefers the Scottish traditional spelling.

Leiper's Fork Distillery

Franklin Distance from Nashville: 40 minutes Leiper’s Fork whiskey is a nod to the way frontier American settlers made whiskey, and their impressive versions of bourbon, Tennessee whiskey and rye benefit from years in oak barrels. Housed in a barn fashioned from a 200-year-old cabin, this distillery brings historical tradition to this prominent Nashville suburb. You can take in the whole thing on a comprehensive tour for just $18.

Nashville Craft Distillery

Wedgewood Houston Started by forensic scientist Bruce Boeko, this distillery housed in a modern building in Nashville’s burgeoning We-Ho neighborhood is still relatively new to the scene, but it’s already gaining notoriety for its range of spirits. In addition to a nice young bourbon and an aromatic gin, Nashville Craft produces innovative spirits from honey and sorghum.

Nelson's Green Brier Distillery

Marathon Village Founded by German immigrant merchant Charles Nelson and later taken over by his wife Louisa, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery’s tradition is now carried on by his two great-great-great-grandsons, Charlie and Andy. The distillery now boasts whiskeys and bourbons inspired by the pre-Prohibition method made famous by their ancestors, including a coffee-caramel-pecan liqueur named after Louisa, two bourbons, and a Tennessee whiskey. Daily distillery tours and tastings sell out early, so make reservations in advance .

Jack Daniel's Distillery

Lynchburg Distance from Nashville: 1 hour 30 minutes Probably one of the most recognizable brands of whiskey in the world, every drop of Jack Daniels is produced and shipped from the tiny town of Lynchburg, deep in the hollers of South Central Tennessee. Founded in 1866 by businessman Jack Daniel, who learned how to distill from a local preacher and an enslaved man named Nearest Green. The distillery offers several themed tours including a tasting tour, a motor tour, and one accompanied by a traditional Southern meal at Miss Mary Bobo’s boarding house nearby just off the town square. Its charcoal mellowed Old. No. 7 is a staple in most bars around the country, but the distillery is also known for Gentleman Jack, an incredibly smooth golden whiskey.  

Pennington Distilling Co.

Nations Located in the quickly developing Nations neighborhood of West Nashville, this distillery is best known for its line of premium whiskeys under the Davidson Reserve label and the popular Pickers Vodka. They also offer a delectable American version of Irish Cream with Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream, made with aged whiskey blended with 30 all-natural flavors and dairy cream. You can also partake in all of them on their tasting tours.

Old Glory Distilling

Clarksville Distance from Nashville: 1 hour Patience is the watchword at Old Glory, where distillers waited five years before releasing their first small-batch Tennessee whiskey made using locally-grown grains. While they waited, they did release some whiskey from small barrels, which age faster than traditional casks, plus a vodka, a gin, a white rum, and some flavored moonshines, so they’ve got a pretty robust portfolio of products at Old Glory now. Drop by any day of the week for a tour or to visit the cocktail bar, and you’ll have the chance to sample the whole range.

Prichard’s Distillery

Kelso Distance from Nashville: 1 hour 30 minutes The Prichard family has 200 years of distilling history in Tennessee, including some when it wasn’t actually legal. But when the opportunity came to open the first new distillery in the state since the repeal of Prohibition, Phil Prichard went to work reviving his family’s legacy, opening the Kelso facility in an old converted schoolhouse in 1997. Early on, Prichard’s line of rums drew most of the attention and garnered awards in many competitions, but now the line has expanded to include whiskeys, vodka, liqueurs, brandy, and moonshine. The distillery doesn’t schedule organized tours, but just drop by whenever they’re open Monday - Saturday, and someone will probably be happy to show you around.

Nearest Green Distillery

Shelbyville Distance from Nashville: 1 hour Nathan “Nearest” Green’s role in helping to develop Tennessee whiskey as the teacher of a young Jack Daniel was almost lost to history, despite the fact that Green’s descendants have worked continuously at Jack’s distillery for generations. Entrepreneur Fawn Hall found out about the story and decided to revive the legacy with a new distillery named after Nearest. Their massive distillery campus in Shelbyville tells a lot of the hidden history of distilling, and their impending new Humble Baron restaurant, bar and entertainment venue boasts the longest bar in the world at 525 feet in length.

Knoxville is home to not one but two distilleries and even though they are located close to each other, Knox Whiskey Works and Post Modern Spirits couldn’t be more different.

Knox Whiskey Works is a small batch craft distillery located in the heart of the city. They work with local farmers and artisans to create unique spirits representative of East Tennessee. They craft seasonal cocktails made with their spirits and combine them with fresh ingredients to create libations with a personality all their own! Must try: A cocktail flight! Why try one cocktail when you can sample them all?

Just down the street from Knox Whiskey Works, you’ll find Post Modern Spirits in the heart of “Old City” located inside of an old freight terminal along the railroad tracks.

Post Modern Spirits is unlike any distillery you’ve ever visited. For one, the tasting room is reminiscent of a cocktail lounge. Additionally, the colors and flavors of the spirits themselves are derived from natural, real ingredients and botanicals. Where artistry and chemistry intersect – the mad scientists at Post Modern are always brewing something new. There’s no shortage of creativity and fresh takes on liquor here. Must try: An Elder Gin Fizz: Elderberry Gin Liqueur, Giniferous Gin, Rosemary Syrup, Lime Juice, Soda Water

Stay Overnight:

Right in the heart of Downtown is the Hyatt Place Knoxville. This posh, pet friendly hotel boasts tons of local art, MCM aesthetic and is within walking distance of most anything in the city! Major perk – it even has a rooftop bar with stunning views of Knoxville, especially at sunset!

Eat & Drink:

Knoxville is filled with casual dining spots, local dives and fine dining experiences alike. Check out SoKno Tacos for cheese dip and the best margaritas around. In the mood for beerFlights and burgers? Check out Balter Beerworks. Mouth watering for some BBQ? You’ll want to visit Sweet P’s. However, be sure to save room for their banana pudding. In short, the culinary scene is unbeatable and one of the many things that makes this city such a fun place to explore.

Make dinner reservations at The Oliver Royale! When possible, the restaurant supports local, natural, sustainable and organic practices and their beautifully plated dishes are as full of flavor as they are colorful.

Go on an adventure:

Knoxville has no shortages of adventures. Literally, the “Urban Wilderness” can be found less than five miles outside of the city in. every. direction. Hike, bike, climb, paddle, or just wander in the woods with over 1k designated natural, green acreage. 

Fort Dickerson Park is a hidden gem for explorers. The area boasts tons of mountain bike and hiking trails along the sides of the beautiful Augusta Quarry. The surface of the water reflects the clouds and trees that hover above and the path leads you down to an inviting shoreline. Here you can paddle, swim and freedive in the old limestone quarry where it reaches depths of almost 300 feet!

Just across town, you’ll find Knoxville’s very own wildlife sanctuary, Ijams Nature Center. It’s filled with 10 parks, 40 miles of multi-use trails, four civil war sites, incredible views and Mead’s Quarry Lake where you can rent kayaks and swim in designated areas.

The Knox Adventure Collective is sure to be a highlight of any trip to Knoxville. It’s the perfect hub for those just visiting the city without gear. They. Have. It. All. The Knox Adventure Collective offers rentals, guided tours and classes for you or your entire family.

The city is splashed with colorful murals and art infused experiences, some notable stops in Knoxville include walking along the Sculpture Garden at Krutch Park, taking photos in “Strong (Graffiti) Alley” in Market Square and stopping to shop at RALA – a storefront filled with Regional and Local Art!

East Tennessee's Whiskey Week Showcases Chattanooga Cuisine And Spirits

The Tennessee Whiskey Trail is hosting its second annual “Whiskey Week” this May and taking the celebration statewide, including a week of events and promotions paying homage to Tennessee’s spirits, cuisine and culture in East Tennessee. 

East Tennessee’s Whiskey Week will take place from May 3-11, packed with events like distillery tours, live music, and local cocktail and food specials at participating restaurants.

There will also be several ticketed Master Distiller-Chef dinners, where chefs at select East Tennessee restaurants will create customized menus based on a Tennessee spirit brand.

This celebration will be a chance for Tennesseans and tourists to experience the Trail and savor the state’s native spirits through four key areas: culinary, cocktails, competition, and activations at the Trail’s member distilleries.

Six years ago, the Tennessee Whiskey Trail was launched by the Tennessee Distillers Guild as a celebration of our state and its signature spirits. 7 Memphis food events you shouldn't miss in May, from BBQ contests to beloved Italian fest

Mark your calendars! May is a busy month when it comes to things to do on the food scene.

This year, Memphis will host two world championship barbecue cooking contests. The Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest returns for its 46th time. SmokeSlam: The World's Ultimate BBQ Showdown will host its inaugural event on the same weekend as the venerable Memphis in May contest.

Not interested in barbecue? Throughout the month, look for events and special dinners focused on everything from Tennessee whiskey to Spanish wines to lemonade.

May will end with the 35th anniversary of the Memphis Italian Festival, one of the city's most beloved annual food festivals.

Here are seven food and drink events happening in May that you won't want to miss.

The Big Squeeze Food Truck Festival at GPAC

Germantown Performing Arts Center will host its inaugural The Big Squeeze Food Truck Festival on May 4 in its outdoor venue, The Grove. The evening will feature food from six Memphis-area food trucks and live music from Memphis Jones. It is also the culminating event in Germantown’s Lemonade Stand Day.

The City of Germantown will host its first Germantown Lemonade Stand Day during the day on May 4, with stands being judged from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The city has partnered with Germantown Education Foundation to teach kids about running a business and giving back. Silo Square's Blues for the Blue Crawfish & Blues Festival

The second annual Blues for the Blue Crawfish & Blues Festival is a 21-and-up event filled with live music, drinks, good eats and more. All proceeds benefit the Southaven Police Department’s First Responders Benevolence Fund and the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Blue Line Fund.

When: 5-10 p.m. May 4

Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest

Calling all barbecue lovers! The 46th edition of the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest will be May 15-18 at Liberty Park.

The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, the largest pork barbecue contest in the world, features the championship categories of Whole Hog, Rib and Shoulder.

Be sure not to miss annual festival events like the Ms. Piggy Idol Contest, Sauce Wrestling and the Kingsford Tournament of Champions Tour (advance ticket purchase required for the tour). The full schedule and ticket information are available at memphisinmay.org .

SmokeSlam BBQ Festival

The SmokeSlam BBQ Festival will make its debut in Memphis on the river at Tom Lee Park.

The three-day festival, dubbed the "World's Ultimate BBQ Showdown," takes place Thursday-Saturday, May 16-18, and will play host to people from all over the country with activities for the whole family.

In addition to the barbecue competition, fans can delight in generous samples of BBQ dishes and enjoy bites from other local food vendors. The barbecue competition will culminate in an awards ceremony Saturday evening hosted by Michelle Buteau, comedian, actress, and host of "BBQ Showdown" on Netflix.

Tickets include tastings, nightly concerts, live fire demos, celebrity book signings and fireworks.

Tennessee Whiskey Week in Memphis

This year, Tennessee Whiskey Week will be a month-long chance for Tennesseans, tourists and travelers to experience the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and savor the state’s native spirits through immersive experiences across the state focused on four key areas: culinary, cocktails, competition and distilleries.

The statewide whiskey festivities kick off May 3 in East Tennessee, then head to Middle Tennessee the week of May 12 and culminate in West Tennessee the week of May 20-25.

Several events are planned for the Memphis area, including a Master Distiller-Chef dinner at Bog & Barley featuring spirits from Old Dominick , Blue Note and PostModern on May 23. Visit tnwhiskeytrail.com for a full list of events.

Spanish Wine Dinner at Restaurant Iris

Restaurant Iris will host a four-course Spanish wine dinner on May 29. Kelly English has created a menu that features authentic dishes from Spain. Rootstock Wine Merchants will present a curated selection of Spanish wines from Tennessee-wide distributor Franklin Selections .

Memphis Italian Festival

Memphis Italian Festival returns to Marquette Park in East Memphis on May 30-June 1.

For more than three decades, the festival and cooking contest have celebrated all things Italian in Memphis. What originated as a Holy Rosary School fundraiser in a parking lot with eight teams has grown into a full-blown festival and cooking competition with more than 40 teams competing for the title of Grand Champion.

Live music, a bocce tournament and carnival games are part of the fun at this family-friendly festival.

When: 3-11 p.m. May 30 and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. May 31-June 1

Lost Dog Street Band Releases Highly-Anticipated & Heavily Introspective New Record, ‘Survived’

Lost Dog Street Band’s brand new album  Survived is finally here, and it’s even better than expected.

In addition to three solo albums, Survived marks prolific frontman Benjamin Tod’s 8th album with Lost Dog Street Band, and to add an element its story line, there was a period of time in which he thought this record may never happen. At the beginning of 2023, the band was in the midst of an indefinite hiatus from touring, and Tod admittedly was in the initial stages of grieving the band’s death and focusing on his solo career. He felt he had come to a point where Lost Dog Street Band had served its purpose as a creative output, and the art he had his sights on making was better suited as a separate endeavor.

That sentiment was put to rest fairly quickly, though, and luckily so, as the music released today overcame Tod and Lost Dog Street Band was back in the studio shortly thereafter, with Survived as the result.

With an expanded version of the longstanding band lineup that, in addition to Tod, features his wife Ashley Mae on fiddle and Jeff Loops on upright bass, LDSB has added drummer Ben Duvall and pedal steel player Tebbs Karney to the outfit, resulting in an even bigger and better sound than before.

Anyone familiar with Tod and Lost Dog Street Band knows that he has lived quite the life, and has plenty of stories to tell, both good and bad, as a result. Through 10 well thought out and intentionally placed tracks, Tod does just that, reflecting on perseverance through a life of vagrancy and addiction and channeling the sorrow and tribulations into art, with the album’s aura encapsulated in the refrain of the title track – “Lord I have survived, Lord how have I survived.”

With songs that cover an array of heavy topics including addiction, death, hopelessness, and love, or a at times a lack thereof,  Survived tells stories of Tod’s experiences over the years and some of the characters with whom he has crossed paths, while juxtaposing both the tormented and optimistic thoughts that have run through his mind along the way. And in typical Lost Dog Street Band fashion, the intricate instrumentation provides a sonically pleasant backdrop to the deftly introspective and emotion-evoking lyricism that flows from Tod’s pen.
