Why Tom Cruise's Love Interest in "Top Gun: Maverick" Looks Different

"Top Gun: Maverick" is packed with nostalgia and callbacks to the original 1986 movie, including some legacy characters and familiar scenes. One thing viewers have noticed has changed, however, is who plays the love interest to Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The sequel — which was nominated for six Academy Awards — sees Maverick, now decades into his career, wooing a bar owner (and daughter of an admiral) named Penny Benjamin. Here's what to know about Maverick's love interest.

Is Penny Benjamin in the Original "Top Gun"?

Penny, played by Jennifer Connelly, is not physically in the first "Top Gun" movie, but she does exist in it, though only mentioned in passing. She is never actually seen on screen.

In one scene, Maverick's past exploits are said to include "a history of high-speed passes over five air-control towers and one admiral's daughter," and Maverick's BFF Goose mutters Penny's name under his breath — making her the "admiral's daughter" in question. That's later confirmed when Goose's wife, Carole, teases Maverick about his romantic history, telling her that Goose "told me all about the time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin."

While she never appears in person in the first "Top Gun," Penny becomes a major character in the sequel . Now played by Connelly, Penny owns a bar that is the downtime destination of choice for the TOPGUN crew. She's less than thrilled when Maverick shows up again, and their dialogue definitely implies that they've had a bit of an on-and-off romance throughout the years between the two movies.

"It started the first time when they were quite young. And you get the sense that they sort of come together, they have this sort of fiery romance, and then it falls apart," Connelly described in a 2022 interview with FilmIsNow . "But then they keep coming back to each other." She echoed those sentiments in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter . "I think that they had a few flings that didn't pan out particularly well in the years between," she said. "We talked about their backstory and what that history might have been."

The actor also recalled being 15 years old when the first movie came out. "I don't remember the exact moment, to be honest with you, but I remember the flying, Tom on his motorcycle with the aviators, and what a charismatic character he had created," said Connelly. "And of course, I remember the songs that got stuck in my head and never left."

Why Isn't Kelly McGillis's Charlie Blackwood in "Top Gun: Maverick"?

In the first "Top Gun," Maverick's love interest is Charlie Blackwood, an astrophysicist who crosses paths with him at the TOPGUN academy. Other cast members from the original "Top Gun" returned for "Top Gun: Maverick," like Val Kilmer , so what's behind this love-interest switcheroo?

Kelly McGillis played Charlie in "Top Gun," but when the sequel came around, according to her, she wasn't even asked to be part of the movie.

"They did not [invite me back], and nor do I think they would ever," she said back in 2019 when the first trailer for "Top Gun: Maverick" dropped and she was conspicuously absent. "I'm old and I'm fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about," she said. McGillis, who is now 66 years old, is almost exactly five years older than 61-year-old Cruise; Connelly is 52. McGillis had nothing but positive things to say about Connelly joining the cast, however, saying she's "so glad [Connelly] got that opportunity."

In contrast, director Joseph Kosinski said that bringing back Charlie simply wasn't in line with the story they were looking to tell in the sequel. "I didn't want every storyline to always be looking backwards," Kosinski previously told Insider . "It was important to introduce some new characters." This meant excluding some characters from the original, including McGillis as Charlie and Meg Ryan as Carole Bradshaw.

Jennifer Connelly Top Gun

Despite the optics of shirtless volleyball games and locker room sparring, you can’t make a “Top Gun” movie without a strong and emotionally centered woman. For “ Top Gun: Maverick ,” a sequel 36 years in the making, the successor to the original film’s Kelly McGillis is Jennifer Connelly . She plays Penny Benjamin, a character referenced in the first film, and love interest to Tom Cruise ’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Playing a single mom who owns an Air Force watering hole, Connelly brings new dimensions to an ’80s classic.

It’s hard to believe you haven’t worked with Tom Cruise before.

I had never even met Tom Cruise before. He’s so exceptional. Spending time with him, you understand how someone has been such a movie star for so many years. It was clear to me what the franchise means to him, so I felt beholden to him, [producer] Jerry Bruckheimer and the audiences who love the film so much.

Your character isn’t active military. Does that mean you were spared the grittier action scenes?

I have a sailing scene, and it was a very distracting environment. We were on a boat shooting up in San Francisco; it was incredibly windy, with big waves. The boat was at an impossible angle, moving so fast, and we had to play the scene at the same time. I was so paranoid that I was going to forget something with all those distractions. I found myself standing on the coffee table in my living room, practicing with my kids spraying water at me and blowing on me while I ran my lines. I have video of it.

You have a love scene in this, which is not something we see often from Cruise at this stage in his career.

We focused on the intimacy of how they fit into each other’s lives. I think those characters have a really tender relationship, the way she understands him. They share a moment in bed chatting, and it tells as much about their relationship as the scene that is the preamble to that. Clearly, they have some unresolved business between them, and she navigates that with humor and playfulness. I feel like she’s someone who is positive and is moving toward happiness.

Did you go Method for this? Were you on set making drinks?

We had a working beer tap on set, and I spent a lot of time pouring. I practiced a lot because I thought that would be a terrible giveaway if I couldn’t do it properly.

If you had a “Top Gun” pilot nickname, what would it be?

I do have a nickname, but from way back when I was in college. I run, but casually. I thought, “I’d love to be on a team, but I don’t play sports.” I am really stubborn and determined, so I thought maybe I could will myself to run really fast. In retrospect, I was more of a mascot. I never competed, and I was the slowest on the team. My nickname on the roster was Death Grip.

Similar to “Top Gun,” a lot of the work you’ve done has cultural staying power, like “Labyrinth.”

Yes, wow. I was 14 when I made that movie. I attribute that staying power so much to Jim Henson — those exquisite, huge practical sets. It was a wonderland. And, of course, David Bowie. So all of those elements: amazing sets, puppets and Bowie.

Things you didn’t know about Jennifer Connelly

Hometown: Brooklyn, N.Y.

Head of class: Attended Yale and Stanford universities, studying English literature and drama, respectively.

Man on the street: The movie most people approach Connelly about is not her David Bowie romp “Labyrinth” or the awards player “Little Children” from Todd Field. “‘Requiem for a Dream’ is a big one,” she says. “That movie had a profound impact on people.”

Kelly McGillis Says She's 'Old,' 'Fat' And OK Being Left Out Of 'Top Gun' Sequel

Ron Dicker

General Assignment Reporter, HuffPost

Kelly McGillis , who played Tom Cruise’s love interest in the original “Top Gun” movie, said she was not asked to return for the upcoming “Top Gun: Maverick” sequel.

And she didn’t mince words explaining why she thinks that is.

Asked by “Entertainment Tonight” recently if the makers of the “Top Gun” sequel offered her a part, McGillis, 62, replied, “Oh my god no. They did not, nor do I think they would ever. I’m old and I’m fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about.”

McGillis played Tom Cruise’s love interest, astrophysicist and training school instructor Charlie Blackwood in the 1986 original about cocky Navy fighter pilots. Jennifer Connelly has been cast as the new movie’s love interest of Maverick, played by Cruise, 57. “Top Gun: Maverick” also brings back Val Kilmer, 59, as Maverick’s rival Iceman.

McGillis didn’t appear to feel slighted by the snub.

“I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age, as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff,” McGillis told “ET.”

McGillis said she’s not feeling the need for speed to go watch “Top Gun: Maverick,” scheduled to open in 2020.

“I’m not racing to the theater, and I’m not racing away from the theater to see it,” she said.

Why Kelly McGillis Isn’t in Top Gun: Maverick: “I’m Old and I’m Fat, and I Look Age-Appropriate”

The post Why Kelly McGillis Isn’t in Top Gun : Maverick: “I’m Old and I’m Fat, and I Look Age-Appropriate” appeared first on Consequence .

Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer returned to the Navy for Top Gun: Maverick ,  but one familiar face missing from the sequel is Kelly McGillis , who played Cruise’s love interest in the 1986 original. According to McGillis, she wasn’t asked to join the film, and she matter-of-factly cited her appearance for her exclusion.

Entertainment Tonight asked McGillis way back in 2019 if the makers of Top Gun: Maverick had asked her to be in the film. “Oh my god no. They did not, nor do I think they would ever,” she replied, almost laughing at the idea. “I mean, I’m old and I’m fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about.”

Fortunately, McGillis didn’t seem to be upset by her very realistic explanation. “I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age, as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff,” she said. The 64-year-old actress told ET that she left Hollywood to get sober and focus on raising her family, and isn’t necessarily itching to see the sequel anyway.

“I guess it depends on what kind of reviews it gets,” she said. “I’m not racing to the theater, and I’m not racing away from the theater to see it.”

McGillis played astrophysicist and training school instructor Charlie Blackwood in the original  Top Gun. In this iteration, Jennifer Connelly portrays Maverick’s new love interest, Penny Benjamin. The long-awaited sequel was directed by Joseph Kosinski and also stars Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Glen Powell.

Jennifer Connelly attends the photocall of "Top Gun: Maverick" during the 75th annual Cannes film festival at Palais des Festivals on May 18, 2022 in Cannes, France.

Jennifer Connelly has been acting professionally for nearly 40 years, and even she has never experienced anything quite like Top Gun : Maverick .

In the legacy sequel to Tony Scott’s Top Gun (1986), Connelly reunites with her Only the Brave director, Joseph Kosinski, as she plays Penny Benjamin, a former flame of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell ( Tom Cruise ). Penny, who’s now a single mother and bar owner, was actually mentioned twice in the original film, indicating that her flings with Maverick ended rather dramatically.

Since the two characters reconnect in Maverick , Connelly and Cruise got to spend various days at sea and in the sky, the latter of which was rather eventful as Cruise piloted a P-51 Mustang.

Paramount wins 'top gun' copyright lawsuit, lewis hamilton says he regrets turning down role in 'top gun: maverick'.

“When the cockpit was open, [Tom Cruise] started the engine and flames burst out. I tried to act really cool, but after a little bit, I couldn’t resist asking if that was normal. And evidently, it was. With another pilot, I might have been more distracted by safety concerns, but I couldn’t have had more trust in Tom,” Connelly tells The Hollywood Reporter .

In the process, Cruise helped Connelly conquer her long-time fear of flying. “He’s just so darn cool, and suddenly, it was like being a kid again. ‘Oh my god, the cool kid is talking to me. Don’t mention that you’re afraid of flying.’ So it was kind of like that. His example is quite inspiring,” Connelly shares.

In a recent conversation with THR , Connelly also broke down their sailing sequence and why it needed to be reshot in San Francisco.

So you worked with Joe Kosinski on Only the Brave . Did he basically call you one day and float the idea of Top Gun: Maverick ?

Yes, Joe Kosinski called me and said, “Hey, I have this idea.” And I was thrilled that he called me to work together again because I had such a great time working with him [on Only the Brave ]. I think he’s a great director. And then he said, “It’s about Top Gun ,” which I was really flattered by. So then he said, “Let me send you the script,” and I read it and was so impressed by it. I thought it was a really compelling story and that they had come up with such a good idea for a sequel. So that’s what happened, and I was all in.

Had you and Tom crossed paths over the years?

No! I then went and had a meeting with Tom, and that was the first time I met him. It was meant to happen on this movie, I guess.

Your character, Penny Benjamin, was referenced a couple times in Top Gun . She had a fling of sorts with Maverick, and it didn’t end particularly well. How much did you flesh out as far as their history?

Yeah, I think that they had a few flings that didn’t pan out particularly well in the years between. We talked about their backstory and what that history might have been. I really enjoyed the way Penny was written, but during the rehearsal process, there definitely were conversations about adjustments and revisions to the scenes. But the spirit of her character, from the first draft I read, was there on the page.

Well, I love how she shows him her world on the water, and then he shows her his world in the air. So, can you first tell me about the day the two of you went out on her boat?

We actually shot that sequence twice. I don’t know if I’m supposed to reveal that, but there you go. We shot it for the first time in San Diego, and the weather was so calm. It was very tranquil, actually. We had a lovely day. I think we saw dolphins, actually. The boat wasn’t moving that fast, but it was a beautiful day out on the water. And then a decision was made that it wasn’t exhilarating enough and that it would be fun to see Penny taking charge of a boat that was moving at a good clip and had a little more athletic sailing. So we went up to San Francisco where we’d have more reliable wind and shot that again. So that was definitely an exhilarating experience.

And then, at a certain point, Penny goes flying with Maverick. What was that day like for you?

There were extensive safety protocols and briefings that happened first. The idea was to capture sunrise, so it was a very early day. We were ready to be up in the air by sunrise, and then I got in the plane with Tom, who was the pilot. When the cockpit was open, he started the engine and flames burst out. I tried to act really cool, but after a little bit, I couldn’t resist asking if that was normal. ( Laughs .) And evidently, it was. I have to say it was so beautiful. With another pilot, I might have been more distracted by safety concerns, but I couldn’t have had more trust in Tom. He’s so skilled at everything he does, and I was able to just enjoy the experience, which was pretty extraordinary.

Some of his co-stars have said that he has this unique ability to inspire them to try things that they wouldn’t have previously considered, such as motorcycle riding and skydiving. Did you feel that at all?

Well, it’s not because he’s coercive. He’s just so darn cool, and suddenly, it was like being a kid again. “Oh my god, the cool kid is talking to me. Don’t mention that you’re afraid of flying.” ( Laughs .) So it was kind of like that. His example is quite inspiring.

How did the motorcycle ride stack up against the days spent sailing and flying?

It was all fun! Every day was fun. Every day on this movie was an extraordinary experience. Even being here in San Diego and doing press, everything is on a different scale. Tom is in the business of making everything extraordinary, so everything was. That scene on the motorcycle wasn’t just riding on a motorcycle. We were on the coast with a view of the water, at sunset, with perfect light. Everything felt amplified.

Having a premiere on an aircraft carrier is definitely extraordinary.

Yeah, that’s a new one for sure. None of us have been on a press tour of any kind in a long time, so it’s nice to be out and about and traveling again. And the prospect of being able to bring this movie into movie theaters is also incredibly exciting.

Do you recall seeing Top Gun for the first time?

I don’t remember the exact moment, to be honest with you, but I remember the flying, Tom on his motorcycle with the aviators, and what a charismatic character he had created. And of course, I remember the songs that got stuck in my head and never left.

Decades from now, when you reminisce about the making of Maverick , is there a day you’ll probably think of first?

I think it was the whole experience. There were so many beautiful days and locations. Filming on the beach in San Diego was great. It was really good fun being able to witness this iteration of the beach volleyball scene. Penny also has a pretty cool car, so I loved shooting that scene. It was all great, honestly. In addition, it just meant a lot to me that Joe came back to me and asked me to work with him again on this project. I just felt really appreciative of that, and I really enjoyed that experience.

Out of curiosity, are you now on Tom’s December cake list? [Writer’s Note: Every December, Cruise sends out a bevy of white chocolate coconut bundt cakes from Doan’s Bakery to close friends and collaborators.]

I did receive a cake! It was a very nice cake. Did you get a cake!?

Me!? I’m just a journalist.

( Laughs .) Well, he’s a very generous person. How many cakes does he send out?

It’s been said that he sent out 300 of them to the latest Mission: Impossible crew, but you’re still part of a very distinguished list.

( Laughs .) Well, it was a lovely cake, and the family enjoyed it very much.

Interview edited for length and clarity.

Tom Cruise’s Girlfriend History: From Nicole Kidman to Katie Holmes to Today

Tom Cruise has had a high-profile love life ever since launching his acting career in the '80s. Here's a complete breakdown of the 'Mission: Impossible' star's romantic history.

Tom Cruise

  • Tom Cruise is an actor, famous for films like Top Gun , Jerry Maguire , and Mission: Impossible .
  • He’s been married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes.

Tom Cruise ‘s love life has been closely followed for decades, ever since making his breakthrough in the 1983 classic  Risky Business . His romantic history consists of three famous marriages (all of which ended, coincidentally, when his wives were 33 years old) and a string of other high-profile romances. But between 2012-2020, Tom seemingly pumped the brakes on public romances.

However, there was renewed interest in the love life of one of Hollywood’s most famous bachelors after a new report surfaced in December 2020. It claimed that Tom was dating his co-star   Hayley Atwell  from Mission: Impossible 7 . In June 2022, another report came out that the pair broke up . In 2023, Tom reportedly moved on with model Elsina Khayrova . We have more information on that below — including Tom’s many other romances since the ’80s.

Melissa Gilbert

Tom Cruise, Melissa Gilbert

Melissa Gilbert , 59, who played Laura Ingalls on the NBC series Little House on the Prairie , claimed that she dated Tom in the early 1980’s. This was at the very beginning of his career! “Actually, when I dated him he was Tom Mapother still. It was when he first moved to Los Angeles and I think I was 16, maybe, or 17?,” Melissa said on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen   in 2017.

“I did not have sex with him,” Laura added. “We made out, but, honestly, there was no sex. He was a good kisser. But, you know, he was, like, a struggling, starving actor. I actually bought him his first set of dishes.” Melissa even reminisced on her friendship/past relationship with her fellow “Brat Pack” pal, Tom, in a throwback Instagram post shared in Oct. 2019.

Heather Locklear

Heather Locklear , 61, was never Tom’s girlfriend, but she did go on one (sort of) date with him. It didn’t go well, according to her recollection. The Melrose Place  star explained in a 2013 interview on Chelsea Lately  that they had both “auditioned for something” together, back when Tom “didn’t have friends” in Hollywood in the early ’80s. So, they went dancing.

“You know in ‘Risky Business’ where he does that dance in his underwear and does the splits? We were dancing at a club and he went into that. He starting doing the splits,” Heather said. “You just kind of stand there and don’t know what to do. Do you dance around him? So, I was like, ‘I’ll just sit down and you can.'”

“And that was the only date you had?,” Chelsea Handler then asked Heather, to which the actress said, “I think so.” Tom and Heather are pictured above together in 1981.

Rebecca De Mornay

Rebecca de Mornay, Tom Cruise

Rebecca de Mornay and Tom played lovers in Tom’s breakthrough film, Risky Business , which came out in 1983. Their on-screen chemistry turned out to be real! Although Rebecca joked that Tom was “extremely annoying” at first, she admitted, “He came to grow on me because we wound up together for two and a half years after that film” in a 2018 interview with Celebrity Page .

Tom Cruise, Cher

Tom Cruise famously made Cher ‘s “Top 5” lovers list, which she revealed on  Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen  in 2013. “I had just the greatest lovers ever. Not a long list. It’s just a good list,” the 77-year-old singer had said.

Cher explained how she and Tom connected in a separate interview. “A bunch of people who were dyslexic were invited to the White House, and Tom and I are both dyslexic. We didn’t go out till way later, but there definitely was a connection there,” Cher told the  Mail on Sunday   in 2018. She added, “Though I don’t get what he does, that whole Scientology thing. I can’t understand it so I just… don’t.”

Mimi Rogers

Tom Cruise, Mimi Rogers

It was during this relationship that Tom infamously joined the Church of Scientology, which he is a prominent figure in to this day. When Tom met actress Mimi Rogers , 67, she had been a few years divorced from Scientologist Jim Rogers . “I met her at a dinner party about a year ago, when I was developing Top Gun. She was dating a friend, and, uh, I thought she was extremely bright,” Tom recalled in a 1986 interview with Rolling Stone .

However, Mimi had a conflicting story. “I wasn’t seeing anybody, he wasn’t seeing anybody, and they thought, ‘These people should be going out with somebody — let’s see if they want to go out with each other.’ And we said, ‘Aw, what the heck. OK’,” Mimi told the Sun Sentinel  in 1987.

Tom sounded smitten in another Rolling Stone interview, which was published mere days before his split from Mimi was announced in 1990. “I’d never been in love before. Since I’ve been with her, it’s opened me up a lot. I think it’s helped me be a better actor. We live a lot of life together. We share everything,” he gushed, later adding, “I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She’s my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her.” The divorce was finalized in February 1990, three years after they got married.

Nicole Kidman

Tom Cruise moved on to his next marriage, which was with Moulin Rouge!  star Nicole Kidman , 55. They met on the set of their movie Days of Thunder , in which they played lovers, in 1990. By the end of the year, they were husband and wife. Tom and Nicole adopted two children amid their 11-year marriage : Isabella in 1992, and Connor in 1994.

During the marriage, Tom and Nicole also filmed another movie together, Eyes Wide Shut , in 1999. Nicole even looked back at their time filming together in a rare interview in Oct. 2020, telling the  New York Times , “We were happily married through that. We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at three in the morning. I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.”

Nicole famously never joined Tom’s Church of Scientology, which even their children went on to be active members in. Tom and Nicole’s split was announced in Feb. 2001, and Tom filed for divorce two days later. To this day, the exes have minimal interactions with one another. “Tom has had little to no contact with Nicole in the 18 years since being married and that is fine by him,” a source close to Tom EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife . “He really does not miss her much at all.”

Tom took a break from the married life and started dating Penélope Cruz , 49, whom he met on the set of the movie Vanilla Sky  in 2000. They enjoyed a three-year relationship, which the former couple’s reps confirmed ended in 2004. “They remain good friends and still talk often. There is no other person involved,” Penelope’s spokesperson told PEOPLE at the time.

Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes

Enter Katie Holmes , who to date remains one of Tom’s most famous exes. Ironically, Katie , 44, she once told Seventeen Magazine   in 2004 that she “used to think that [she] was going to marry Tom Cruise,” which didn’t turn out to just be wishful thinking. The two came together the very next year.

Katie and Tom’s first public appearance as lovers happened in April of 2005. Tom was with the Dawson’s Creek star in Rome, where he was visiting to collect his David di Donatello Award for lifetime achievement. The very next month, Tom was jumping on Oprah Winfrey ‘s couch and proclaiming that he’s “in love” (to which Oprah said, “The boy is gone”).

The relationship quickly advanced. When Katie stepped onto the  Batman Begins  premiere in June of 2005, the actress revealed that she’s converting to Scientology (Tom’s religion) and her engagement to Tom was announced that very same month. By October, the couple was expecting, and in April of 2006 they welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Suri .

Katie and Tom tied the knot in Italy in Nov. 2006, and all seemed happy until June of 2012, when Katie filed for divorce. A settlement for custody of Suri was decided on a month later. A year afterwards, Tom admitted that he “didn’t expect” that divorce in an interview with German television network ProSieben.

Katie reflected on the time after the divorce in an April 2020 interview with   InStyle . “That time was intense. It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it. We had some funny moments out and about in public. So many people I didn’t know became my friends and helped us out, and that’s what I love about the city,” she said.

Hayley Atwell

Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell

Tom reportedly started dating Hayley Atwell  — whom you may have seen playing Peggy Carter in the Captain America  movies — in 2020, according to a report from The Sun that surfaced in Dec. of that year. Hayley and Tom filmed Mission 7: Impossible  together amid the pandemic.

“Tom and Hayley hit it off from day one,” a source told The Sun , who added, “Lockdown, and all the difficulties that came with it, brought them even closer and they’ve become fairly inseparable.” Tom and Hayley did not confirm this report, but he hasn’t confirmed any romances since his marriage to Katie, and on June 12, 2022, it was reported he and Hayley had split . It was the second reported split since back in Sept. 2021, they reportedly also called it quits but reconciled a short time later.

“Tom and Hayley’s relationship was genuine,” a source told The Sun . “In spite of some rumours to the contrary, it was never just for the cameras. Unfortunately it hasn’t worked out for them. They get on really well, and have fantastic chemistry, which is why they decided to quietly give the relationship another try earlier this year.”

Elsina Khayrova

Tom Cruise

In mid-2023, multiple outlets reported that Tom had quietly started dating the model and socialite.

“They’re very happy,” a source told Us Weekly in December 2023. “And Tom’s extremely confident about it working out for the long term. Tom is going into 2024 totally energized, excited and feeling healthier and happier than he has in years. This is a very special time for him, and having a serious relationship in his life that he can build on is the icing on the cake.”

Tom Cruise as Capt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell

The main character of both Top Gun films is Maverick himself, Pete Mitchell, played by the legendary Tom Cruise. Maverick started as a loose cannon who marched at the beat of his own drum. After the death of his best friend, Goose ( Anthony Edwards ), Maverick learned to grow up and become one of the best aviators in the Navy. When we meet Maverick in the Top Gun sequel, he is still as stubborn as ever, but now he’s often fighting for others. Once he’s tasked with returning to Top Gun, Maverick’s number one priority is making sure the pilots return home from their mission with zero casualties.

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest stars on the planet. You can see him in Edge of Tomorrow , the Mission Impossible series, and American Made ; his upcoming films include Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning (Parts 1 and 2), with both Luna Park and Edge of Tomorrow 2 in development.

Val Kilmer as Adm. Tom "Iceman" Kazansky

Top Gun: Maverick went so far as to make Kilmer’s real-life battle with cancer a part of Iceman’s character. The Iceman graduated Top Gun alongside Maverick. The two didn’t see eye-to-eye at first, but they became best friends by the end of the first film. Val Kilmer delivers a terrific performance as Ice, and Top Gun: Maverick allowed the actor to return to the role. Kilmer had to retire from acting due to throat cancer so the film might be Kilmer’s last role, making it all the more touching.

Val Kilmer has a stellar filmography. Some of his most iconic work includes Tombstone , Kiss Kiss Bang Bang , and Heat . He’s also known for starring in Joel Schumacher’s cult classic, Batman Forever .

Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw

Miles Teller stars as Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw. The son of Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) and Carole Bradshaw ( Meg Ryan ), Rooster and Maverick’s relationship is one of the film's most significant sources of tension. After the death of Goose in the first film, Maverick feels guilt but also a duty to take care of Carole and Bradley. This leads to friction between Bradley and Maverick since Carole doesn’t want Bradley to be an aviator and get killed like his father. As a favor to Carole, Maverick sets Rooster back three years.

This doesn’t stop Rooster, and he becomes a solid naval aviator. Good enough to be invited back to Top Gun, where Maverick confronts him. The two have a unique relationship, and Rooster is one of the standout characters. Miles Teller is best known for his performances in Whiplash , War Dogs , and Fantastic Four (2015). His most recent film is Spiderhead , and his upcoming projects are The Ark and the Aardvark , The Fence , and The Gorge where he'll star alongside Anya Taylor-Joy .

Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin

Penny is a character that was referenced in the original Top Gun but didn’t make an appearance until Top Gun Maverick . Penny and Maverick have had an on-again-off-again relationship for years, and we see their latest encounter in Top Gun: Maverick . Penny has a daughter named Amelia and owns a bar near Top Gun. Jennifer Connelly brings Penny Benjamin to life. Penny and Mav rekindle their relationship during his time back, and hopefully, it will last. She might be Maverick’s oldest and closest friend, making their bond all the more important to him. Connelly’s notable works include A Beautiful Mind , Requiem For a Dream , and Labyrinth . Connelly will next be seen in Alice Englert 's feature directorial debut Bad Behavior , where she'll star opposite Ben Whishaw .

Lyliana Wray as Amelia Benjamin

Amelia Benjamin is Penny’s daughter. She loves her mother and has a good rapport with Maverick. With the stranger nature of Penny and Maverick’s relationship, Amelia simply wants what’s best for her mother. Lyliana Wray has guest-starred on Black-ish , The Night Shift , and Strange Angel .

Glen Powell as Lt. Jake "Hangman" Seresin

Lt. Jake Seresin is one of the best pilots in Top Gun, but he’s reckless and leaves his fellow aviators hanging, hence the name. Ironically, Hangman isn’t so different from Maverick during his first stint at Top Gun. In a way, Hangman and Rooster mirror Maverick and Iceman. Glen Powell ’s charisma is on full display as Hangman. The actor initially auditioned for the role of Rooster but later took on the part of Hangman after a conversation with Tom Cruise . Glen Powell previously starred in Set It Up , Scream Queens , and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society . He most recently starred in another aviation-themed film, Devotion , where he starred opposite Jonathan Majors . Powell's career has exploded since the release of Top Gun: Maverick landing leading roles in high-profile projects like Richard Linklater 's action-comedy Hitman , the Kat Coiro -directed buddy-comedy Foreign Relations where he'll play opposite Nick Jonas , and the big-budget Prime Video original series Butch & Sundance which also stars Regé-Jean Page and is a reboot of the classic film Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid .

Monica Barbaro as Lt. Natasha "Phoenix" Trace

Phoenix is one of two female pilots invited to Top Gun. She is often at odds with Hangman and a friend to Rooster and the rest of the aviators. Monica Barbaro is best known for her time on Chicago Justice , The Good Cop , and Splitting Up Togethe r. Her next projects will be a voice-role in the Netflix anime series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and playing the co-lead in the Arnold Schwarzenegger -led Netflix series Utap .

Lewis Pullman as Lt. Robert "Bob" Floyd

Bob becomes Phoenix's second seat and a trusted friend. His name is Bob, and his call sign is Bob, making for pretty funny banter between him and his fellow pilots. Lewis Pullman has previously appeared in Bad Times at the El Royale , Catch-22 , and Them That Follow . His subsequent appearances are in Thelma , Auxiliary Man , Salem’s Lot , and the Brie Larson -led Apple series Lessons in Chemistry .

Jay Ellis as Lt. Reuben "Payback" Fitch

Payback and his partner Fanboy prove to be terrific pilots under Maverick’s teachings. So much so that they are chosen as major players in the upcoming mission. Jay Ellis starred as Payback and was previously seen in Insecure , Mrs. America , and Masters of Sex . His next role is in the forthcoming film, Someone I Used to Know from director Dave Franco .

Danny Ramirez as Lt. Mickey "Fanboy" Garcia

Fanboy is Payback’s flight partner and operates the backseat controls. He serves the same role Bob does for Pheonix or what Goose did for Maverick. Danny Ramirez most recently appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , Assassination Nation , and No Exit . His upcoming projects are Plus/Minus , Chestnut , and Captain America: New World Order .

Bashir Salahuddin as Wo-1. Bernie "Hondo" Coleman

Bernie is a Warrant Officer Rank 1 and is working on a program that Maverick is test-piloting. When Maverick gets called back to Top Gun, Hondo goes with him and becomes his assistant coach. Bashir Salahuddin is the writer and star of Sherman’s Showcase , where he plays Sherman McDaniels. He has also appeared in Robot Chicken , The Dropout , and has an upcoming project titled Paradise .

Jon Hamm as Adm. Beau "Cyclone" Simpson

Admiral Simpson is tasked with overseeing Maverick’s mission. He doesn’t tolerate Maverick’s shenanigans and doesn’t think he’s the man for the job. Cyclone is very strict and has a no-nonsense attitude, making him the perfect foil for Maverick. Jon Ham is best known as Don Draper from Mad Men. He has also appeared in Tag , Baby Driver , The Town , and he most recently starred in the title role in Confess, Fletch . 2023 looks to be a huge year for Hamm, he'll be reprising his role as Gabriel in Season 2 of Good Omens , will be joining the cast of Season 3 of the Apple original series The Morning Show , will play one of the leads in Season 5 of Fargo , he'll lend his voice to the animated comedy series Grimsburg, and will star in John Slattery 's directorial debut Maggie Moore(s) .

Charles Parnell as Adm. Solomon "Warlock" Bates

Admiral Bates is much more forgiving of Maverick’s past and wants to support him. Warlock works alongside Cyclone and offers a less-strict approach to the situation at hand. Charles Parnell has starred in many projects, including, The Last Ship , The Venture Bros. , and T ransformers: Age of Extinction . He most recently appeared in the FX series Kindred . He is slated to appear in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One and David Fincher 's action-noir film The Killer .

Ed Harris as Rear Admiral Chaster "Hammer" Cain

Ed Harris has a brief appearance in Top Gun: Maverick , but his presence is felt. We meet Hammer when Maverick is attempting to push his plane to Mach 10 to save the program he’s currently test-piloting for. Hammer arrives to shut down the program in person, and Maverick is flying overhead as he comes. Hammer later informs Maverick that Iceman wants him to report to Top Gun. Ed Harris is known for his roles in The Truman Show , Apollo 13 , Westworld , and Pollock . His upcoming projects include Love Lies Bleeding , Downtown Owl , and Get Away If You Can .

Why top gun's maverick has a new love interest in top gun 2.

Charlie won't rekindle her romance with Maverick in Top Gun: Maverick, but Jennifer Connelly will play his new love interest.

Top Gun 's sequel Top Gun: Maverick is introducing a new love interest for the iconic fighter pilot. Jennifer Connelly will romance Maverick, as a single mother who is the owner of a bar. No other details have been shared about the character, including her name. While there are theories that she might be Penny Benjamin , who is mentioned in the first movie but never shown, the addition of this new love brings up the question of why Top Gun actress Kelly McGillis won't reprise her role as Charlie.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight , McGillis was blunt about why she wasn't asked to join Top Gun: Maverick . " I'm old and I'm fat I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about ,” she explained. “ But... I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff .”

Related:  Top Gun 2: What Jet Maverick Is Flying In The Trailer

Though some fans might be disappointed Maverick and Charlie aren't together anymore, McGillis isn't hurt by the decision to not include her. The actress hasn't had many roles since the iconic '80s flick, and said in an interview with USA Today that having a new lifestyle has shifted her focus from her acting career:

"I think just my priorities in life changed .  It wasn't like a major decision that I made to leave, it was just that other things became more important. I love acting, I love what I do, I love doing theater, but I don't know. To me, my relationships to other people became far more important than my relationship to fame."

She also mentioned to USA Today that right now she's perfectly content staying at home with her children, rather than spending her time on set. " I am a home person. I'm really rooted in my home life ... I can't remember the last time I worked ," she said. " I feel really blessed that I don't have to work, you know? But I get the option to work, so I'm really blessed in that way. Not many people get that option later in life, so I feel very lucky ."

But, for fans who are concerned about Charlie not being in Top Gun: Maverick , there's still hope that they'll know what she's up to. The sequel will potentially explain what happened in their relationship and what Charlie is doing now. Though not much has been shared about the plot, it's expected that the sequel will update fans on what's been going on in the past three decades since Maverick returned to Topgun as an instructor.

'It Broke My Heart': F1 Racer Regrets Turning Down Top Gun: Maverick Role

Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton shares the story of asking Tom Cruise for a role in the Top Gun sequel just to turn it down when it was offered.

Lewis Hamilton had a chance to be a part of one of the biggest blockbuster films of all time, but he turned down a possible role in Top Gun: Maverick when it was offered. Looking back, the racing superstar is admitting that it was a big mistake not to get involved.

While speaking with GQ , Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton addressed his friendship with Tom Cruise along with his near-casting in Top Gun: Maverick . The story goes back to before Maverick was even in the works, as Hamilton has long been a Top Gun fan. After the two became friends when Cruise invited Hamilton to the set of the 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow , Cruise kept in touch, sometimes sending messages of support for Hamilton's races. At one point, Hamilton said he wanted to get a role in a potential Top Gun sequel if one were to ever get made.

“I said, ‘Dude, if you ever do Top Gun 2 …’—which had not been spoken of, there was no story yet—‘I will even be a janitor—just let me be in it ,'" Hamilton explained.

It's not quite clear when exactly this comment was made, but some time afterward, Top Gun: Maverick was greenlit and put into production. Cruise remembered Hamilton's request and sought to make it a reality by putting the Formula One driver in contact with the movie's director, Joseph Kosinski. That led to Hamilton getting offered a role as a pilot in the film, but the timing couldn't have been much worse, putting the driver into a predicament.

Top Gun: Maverick Star Reveals the Production's Creative Solution to Bathroom Breaks

Lewis hamilton wasn't confident about his abilities.

At the time, Hamilton was in the midst of the 2018 title race. To accept the Maverick role, he would've had to take a couple of weeks off of the final months of the racing season. On top of that, Hamilton was concerned about his lack of experience as a professional actor. While he describes the decision to pass on the project as heartbreaking, he ultimately did so, worried he'd be the one to wreck the project. Looking back, Hamilton regrets the decision.

“Firstly, I hadn’t even had, like, an acting lesson ,” Hamilton said of when he got the offer. “And I don’t want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. I remember having to tell Joe and Tom—and it broke my heart . And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it’s: It could’ve been me! Oh, God, I’m still….”

It's easy to see why it stings for Hamilton to have missed out. Maverick went on to earn nearly $1.5 billion at the global box office, serving as the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise's career. It was also nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and garnered widespread acclaim, drawing very high scores from critics and audiences alike. However, there is a third film in development , so maybe Hamilton will get another shot at joining the franchise.

Top Gun: Maverick is streaming on Prime Video and Paramount+.

Lewis Hamilton; Tom Cruise in 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Lewis Hamilton is producing a Formula 1 movie with Joseph Kosinski starring Brad Pitt.

The British racing star could have worked with the filmmaker on Top Gun: Maverick had it not been for his conflicting work schedule.

In a new interview, Hamilton revealed he lobbied Tom Cruise to star in a possible Top Gun sequel before the 2022 film was made.

“Firstly, I hadn’t even had, like, an acting lesson,” he said. “And I don’t want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. Although he didn’t have the opportunity to work with Kosinski in Top Gun: Maverick , he will now work with him in the Formula 1 film.

“My point was: Guys, this movie needs to be so authentic,” Hamilton said. “There’s two different fan groups that we have — like, the old originals, who from the day they’re born hearing the Grand Prix music every weekend and watching with their families, to the new generation that just learned about it today through Netflix.”

He continued, “I felt my job really has been to try to call BS. ‘This would never happen.’ ‘This is how it would be.’ ‘This is how it could happen.’ Just giving them advice about what racing is really about and what, as a racing fan, would appeal and what would not.”

Lewis Hamilton says he ‘regrets’ sacrificing Top Gun: Maverick role for F1 title chase

British Formula One star Lewis Hamilton has admitted he “regretted” not taking Tom Cruise up on his offer of a role in Top Gun: Maverick.

The 2022 film saw Cruise, 61, reprise his role as US Navy Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell from the 1986 original.

Cruise and Hamilton, 39, have been friends since 2014 when the movie star invited the Mercedes driver to the set of his film Edge of Tomorrow apropos of nothing.

In 2018, Cruise put Hamilton in touch with Maverick director Kosinski, who offered Hamilton a role as one of the film’s pilots . Hamilton had to decline as shooting would have clashed with the F1 season in which he was fighting Sebastian Vettel for the championship.

“Firstly, I hadn’t even had, like, an acting lesson,” Hamilton recalled in a new profile for GQ magazine. “And I don’t want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. I remember having to tell Joe and Tom – and it broke my heart.

“And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it’s: ‘It could’ve been me!’”

Hamilton went on to win the 2018 World Championship while Maverick was credited with “saving cinema” after the Covid pandemic, earning nearly $1.5bn at the global box office.

Elsewhere in the GQ interview, Hamilton expressed his desire to focus on filmmaking after he retires from racing.

The seven-time world champion is currently producing an untitled F1 movie starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris.

“I felt my job really has been to try to call BS. ‘This would never happen.’‘This is how it would be.’ ‘This is how it could happen,’ Hamilton explained. “Just giving them advice about what racing is really about and what, as a racing fan, would appeal and what would not.”

Meanwhile, Cruise looks set to reprise his role as Maverick in a third Top Gun movie, it was reported earlier this year.

In her four-star review of Top Gun: Maverick for The Independent , film critic Clarisse Loughrey wrote: “The film is a true legacy sequel. In the tradition of Star Wars: The Force Awakens , it’s a carefully reconstructed clone of its predecessor, tooled not only to reflect changing tastes and attitudes, but the ascendancy of its star Tom Cruise to a level of fame that borders on the mythological. Do we still think of Cruise as a man these days, or as an idea?”

She added: “But Top Gun: Maverick really isn’t packed with the kind of craven nostalgia that we’re used to these days. It’s smarter, subtler, and wholly more humanistic.”

Paramount wins copyright claim in L.A.

A federal judge in Los Angeles has handed Paramount Pictures a win in a copyright lawsuit brought by family of a writer whose magazine article inspired the 1986 Tom Cruise movie "Top Gun," according to court papers obtained Monday.

Ehud Yonay -- whose 1983 piece about the Top Gun school at Miramar Naval Air Station for California magazine inspired the original blockbuster starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis -- died in 2012.

Want to get caught up on what's happening in SoCal every weekday afternoon?  Click to follow The L.A. Local  wherever you get podcasts.

His family filed suit in June 2022 in downtown Los Angeles, alleging copyright infringement over that year's "Top Gun: Maverick" sequel. In the complaint, the author's widow, Shosh Yonay, and son, Yuval Yonay, allege they filed notice six years ago with the studio reclaiming the copyright to the article, but Paramount did not obtain a new license to use the material.

In a written ruling Friday, U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson granted summary judgment to the studio and dismissed the case, finding that elements from the film, such as plot, theme, setting and dialogue, are "largely dissimilar" from Ehud Yonay's article. The court also determined that any overlapping factual similarities aren't protected by copyright law.

The plaintiffs will appeal, their lawyer Marc Toberoff said.

The suit sought monetary damages and an injunction barring Paramount from distributing the film or any further sequels.

With Cruise at the helm, "Top Gun: Maverick" grossed $1.5 billion worldwide, becoming Cruise's biggest film, and is the 12th highest-grossing film ever, according to Box Office Mojo.

Paramount wins copyright claim in L.A.

Tom Cruise Had A 4-Word Response When He Saw The Story For Top Gun 3. So, What's Next?

Short but effective!

Top Gun : Maverick was a monster success in 2022. The Tom Cruise-led blockbuster did record breaking numbers at the box office, and the action film even landed a Best Picture nomination that year. It was a hit with audiences as well, and everyone seemed to love the sequel to the 1986 Tony Scott film. Plans for a Top Gun 3 seemed inevitable, and recent reports suggest that Paramount is moving forward officially with a Top Gun threequel . Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently opened up about the film, revealing Cruise’s reaction to hearing the story idea for the film.

The legendary film producer recently spoke to ScreenRant about the studio’s plans for Top Gun 3 , and how development on the film is progressing. The good news is that plans seem to be actively in motion, with Maverick director Joe Kosinski attached to direct again. As for Cruise’s response to hearing about the story plans for Top Gun 3 , according to Bruckheimer, he said:

I really like that.

This is admittedly a very short response, and not much to go off of. But when it comes to making a Top Gun film, Cruise’s approval is everything. It took over 30 years to get Top Gun: Maverick off the ground because the Jerry Maguire star didn’t want to proceed until the script was just right. Cruise is also a major producer on the Top Gun films, so his opinion is incredibly important for the future of the franchise. Getting him to sign off on at least the story pitch is a really great sign for a script to finally be put together. Even with this good news, it still may be a while before we see Top Gun 3 on the big screen. Bruckheimer said of the film:

It will be Tom Cruise [leading the cast]. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and [Tom] said, ‘I really like that,’ so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing ‘Mission: Impossible’ right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.

Bruckheimer is right to say that Mission: Impossible is a massive commitment for Cruise, especially in the most recent years. Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part 1 faced a number of delays due to a complex COVID production. Additionally, Mission: Impossible 8 had to stop filming due to the 2023 Actors and Writers strikes. As a result M:I 8 has also been delayed to 2025 . In general, the Mission films are complicated productions with their complex action sequences, and logistics involved. With such an undertaking, Cruise pursuing a Top Gun 3 in tandem with M:I responsibilities feels almost, well, mission impossible .

However, this is great news regardless. With the main team behind Maverick back to work on Top Gun 3 , and a strong Cruise-approved story in the works, Paramount seems to have all the tools for another hit on their hands. Glen Powell has expressed interest in returning to Top Gun when duty calls, and it seems like the other cast members are down for another high-flying adventure . Even if fans do have to wait for Cruise’s schedule to clear up, if Top Gun: Maverick was any indication, Top Gun 3 will be well worth the wait.

While fans wait for Top Gun 3 to eventually hit the big screen, they can revisit Tom Cruise ’s adrenaline pumping performances in 1986’s Top Gun and 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick , which are both now streaming for Paramount+ subscribers . Tom Cruise and Girlfriend Elsina Khayrova Split, ‘Weren’t Romantically Compatible’ (Exclusive)

Tom Cruise and his girlfriend, Elsina Khayrova , have called it quits shortly after debuting their romance.

“They weren’t gelling and realized they weren’t romantically compatible,” a source exclusively reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly , on stands now.

According to the insider, Khayrova, 36, was the one to put an end to the their relationship. “There’s no bad blood between them,” the source tells Us . “They just had different ideas of what their relationship was going to be.”

The actor, 61, and the Russian socialite, 36, were first spotted cozying up to each other at a December 2023 party in London’s Grosvenor Square, though a source exclusively told Us  at the time that the pair had been dating for “a while.”

“They’re very happy,” the insider added. “And Tom’s extremely confident about it working out for the long term. … They’ve hung out at Tom’s favorite private members club and regularly enjoy afternoon tea and gourmet dinners out in London.”

The two met through mutual friends in the city’s social scene. “What started as a basic friendship quickly turned into something more special ,” the source said.

Cruise’s eldest children, Isabella, 31, and Connor, 29 — whom he shares with ex-wife Nicole Kidman — thought Khayrova was “great and [were] so happy to see that their dad [had] love in his life again,” the insider noted, revealing that Cruise was waiting to pursue a romance once he found the right person. “He wanted to take his time and not rush into any relationships just for the sake of it.”

As for Khayrova, she was “very supportive of Tom and his work” and knew that he had “a lot of demands and obligations” on his plate.

In February, a second source told Us that Cruise was “very relaxed and content” with Khayrova. “They’re both happy in London and settled with a well-heeled social circle, all of whom believe it’s a great match.”

Although there was a 25-year age difference between the duo, they had plenty in common, with the insider revealing that they would “sit and talk for hours about world affairs, arts and culture, history [and] sports.” The source also noted that Cruise found Khayrova’s “journey and heritage fascinating” and thought she was “incredibly intelligent.”

At the time, Cruise and Khayrova were solid, with the source hinting that a serious commitment could be in their future. “Tom [has] never ruled out getting married again; it’s just that the circumstances haven’t been right,” the insider said, adding that they were “super happy together.”

Cruise was previously married to Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990, to Kidman, 56, from 1990 to 2001 and to Katie Holmes — with whom he shares a daughter — from 2006 to 2012. Khayrova, meanwhile, filed for divorce from Russian oligarch Dmitry Tsetkov in 2022 after separating two years earlier. The exes, who have two children together, have since settled the proceedings.
