Sonoma Valley, California

Learning Winemaking by Experience

Exploring the process from grape to glass in sonoma valley, california, by quincy koetz.

Winemaking is as ingrained in California heritage as the Gold Rush and Hollywood. But beyond a few tasting rooms in the Bay Area, my wife and I craved a better understanding of wine. We had so many questions: Why is wine so diverse? What makes California on par with France? Having exhausted what we could learn online and through books, we were determined to learn by experience.

Our goal was to see how it all works over the course of three days: from soil to press to barrel to bottle, across five different wineries.

Sustainable flavors

We started our weekend at Benziger Family Winery , uniquely heralded as a biodynamic estate. Our guide, Jack, was in his fifth decade of winemaking and wasn’t stumped by any question.

When asked what went into a biodynamic winery, he answered simply, “We’re putting nature back in the driver’s seat.”

Viewing the mountainside winery from an overlook revealed 31 soil compositions optimally matched to their vines. Miniscule differences in sun exposure, cover crops and microclimates each play a part in the growth of the variety.

The practice of biodynamic farming goes beyond avoiding pesticides. Every piece of the property plays a part in the life of the vineyard: flowers and succulents are precisely planted to employ the right insects and deter the wrong ones. Of the 85 acres of the Benziger vineyard, only 40 were used for winemaking—the rest hosted other crops, livestock and plants to balance the soil. Biodynamic isn’t just the highest certification of organic farming; it is a way of life for a sustainable vineyard.

One hundred fifty years and counting

Gundlach Bunschu, Buena Vista and Valley of the Moon wineries have endured for more than 150 years. With an extensive legacy, each vineyard has seen their fair share of victories and difficulties. Resiliency is a part of their DNA as they continue to thrive following crippling events such as a root parasite epidemic in 1873, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the equally apocalyptic effects of Prohibition from 1920 to 1933. Each emerged as stalwart crafters in the busy Sonoma Valley wine scene.

Our guide, Rob, at Gundlach Bunschu graciously welcomed guests through the estate. From wine cellar cave to vineyard, Rob described each step of the winemaking process, and poured us both a glass to punctuate the vineyard’s tradition and innovation. Like other small-batch estate wineries, Gundlach Bunschu produces wines composed of unusual varietals typically used for blending. Their Cabernet Franc and Tempranillo in particular delighted us.

Multi-attraction sign in downtown Glen Ellen, Sonoma Valley, California

Next, we visited Buena Vista . This is the oldest premium winery in California (“premium” referring to the style of grape brought over from Europe). In 1857, its founder, Agoston Haraszthy, recognized that every varietal of grape grown in Europe could flourish in Sonoma Valley. The world watched and learned from his successes and setbacks.

Setbacks included the phylloxera epidemic that nearly destroyed two continents worth of vineyards. Through global efforts of trial and error, winemakers discovered the solution, which we learned involved grafting American rootstock to European vines. The depth of history was fascinating.

Our guide at the Valley of the Moon Winery described the important effect wine barrels have on aging and flavor. James, a fourth-generation resident, described the relationship between unsung heroes known as coopers and winemakers. Coopers—every bit as artistic as winemakers—are the people who make wine barrels and have a distinctive process, and material and flavor finish preferences.

“You don’t get good wine without great coopers,” he remarked. As much as 20–30% of a wine’s flavor comes from the barrel itself. More than a storage unit, this microenvironment rounds out the wine by contributing the non-fruit tastes and aromas. Winemakers know their fruit, and they select specific coopers to craft barrels that best complement the flavor profile of the grape.

All about the details

Bob, our veteran guide at Ravenswood , welcomed the opportunity to enhance the knowledge of two budding wine enthusiasts. We felt almost like real winemakers after a world-class barrel tasting. Winemakers sample from barrels midway or toward the end of the aging process to determine flavor and readiness for bottling. This helped us realize the importance of the barrel and the winemaker’s blending decisions to evoke the intended nose and finish.

We discovered more strategy to the vines than I’d ever expected. Merlots are intricately pruned and spaced to allow for precise, balanced flavors. In contrast, zinfandel vines are as wild and unruly as they taste. Variability in the harvest leads to the robust flavors that Ravenswood zinfandels are so known for. As owner, Joel Peterson, would say, “No wimpy wines allowed.”

Beginning of a lifelong appreciation for wine

At the end of three days, we left with nearly a case of wine and a download of experience well beyond our years.

Due in large part to our guides at each Sonoma Valley winery, it took neither a degree in viticulture, nor an expensive wine course to become more well-rounded enthusiasts. The welcoming and approachable atmosphere sealed Sonoma Valley’s reputation as a world-class destination for winetasting.

We started the weekend as wine novices and left feeling closer to experts. Of course, we’re willing to do more research in the name of education.

Getting There

The southern end of Sonoma Valley is about an hour north of the Bay Area, accessible through Marin to the west or through Vallejo to the east. Northern areas of Sonoma can take 3 to 4 hours to reach from the Bay Area directly, so be sure to map out the route in advance. Since it is a large area, visitors are best advised to rent a car and have plenty of time to fully explore it.

Private day trips and tours through Sonoma Valley are also offered by Hansom Tours . Check current flight deals into San Francisco on Kayak.

Sonoma is quite close to Napa Valley, which runs parallel, to the east. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience.

Is Napa Valley or Sonoma better?

Ah, the age-old question: Napa Valley or Sonoma? Which wine region should take the crown? Truth be told, each has its own unique charm and allure, making it difficult to pick just one as the ultimate winner. Napa Valley , renowned for its prestigious wineries and luxurious experiences, tends to be a magnet for those seeking opulence and glamour. On the other hand, Sonoma, with its laid-back atmosphere and diverse range of wineries, often captures the hearts of those yearning for a more relaxed and approachable vibe. Sonoma also tends to be more affordable. Either way, both regions are very close to each other, so you could get a taste of both if you have a few days to spare. In the end, the choice between Napa Valley and Sonoma boils down to personal preferences and what kind of wine adventure you’re craving. Are you dreaming of sipping world-class Cabernet Sauvignon amidst the glitz and grandeur? Napa Valley is calling your name! Or perhaps you’re seeking a tranquil escape where you can explore the hidden gems and savor a variety of delightful wines? Sonoma might just be your perfect match. Whichever destination you choose, rest assured that unforgettable experiences and exceptional wines await you.

Is Sonoma more affordable than Napa?

In general, Sonoma is often considered more affordable than Napa Valley, both in terms of wine tasting fees and other travel expenses like accommodations, dining, and transportation. While there are certainly luxurious and high-end experiences available in Sonoma, the region is known for its more laid-back, approachable atmosphere and a broader range of budget-friendly options. Wine tasting fees in Sonoma tend to be lower on average compared to those in Napa Valley, and there are more wineries with affordable or complimentary tastings. Additionally, accommodations and dining options in Sonoma often span a wider price range, making it easier to find something that suits your budget.

What is the average wine tasting fee in Sonoma?

Wine tasting fees in Sonoma can vary greatly depending on the winery, the type of tasting experience, and whether or not the fee includes a guided tour or food pairings. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $15 to $50 per person for a standard wine tasting at most wineries. However, some premium or more exclusive tasting experiences can cost upwards of $75 to $100 or more. Keep in mind that some wineries may waive the tasting fee if you purchase a bottle of wine, while others may offer complimentary tastings for wine club members or by special invitation. Also, if you’re a Visa Signature credit card holder, many Sonoma Wineries participate in discounted tasting and tour experiences. You can read our guide to the Sonoma Visa Signature credit card program here. It’s a good idea to research the wineries you’re interested in visiting to get an accurate idea of their tasting fees and any available discounts or promotions.

What is the best time of year to visit Sonoma wineries?

The best time of year to visit Sonoma wineries ultimately depends on your preferences and interests. However, there are certain times of the year that offer unique experiences and more favorable weather conditions. Here’s a quick overview of what to expect during different seasons in Sonoma: Spring (March-May): Spring is a beautiful time to visit Sonoma, as the vineyards awaken from their winter slumber and the landscape is adorned with vibrant wildflowers and lush greenery. The weather is mild and pleasant, making it perfect for outdoor activities and wine tasting. Spring is also less crowded than the peak summer and harvest seasons, so you can enjoy a more relaxed experience. Summer (June-August): Summer is a popular time to visit Sonoma, with warm, sunny days and plenty of events and festivals taking place. The vineyards are in full swing, and you can enjoy long days of wine tasting and outdoor activities. However, summer can also be quite crowded, and accommodations may be more expensive and harder to find. Fall (September-November): The fall season, particularly September and October, is a favorite time for many wine enthusiasts to visit Sonoma. The harvest season is in full swing, and the vineyards are bustling with activity as grapes are picked and crushed. The weather is still warm and pleasant, and the changing colors of the leaves create a picturesque backdrop. Keep in mind that this is a peak season for wine tourism, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodations. Winter (December-February): Winter is the low season in Sonoma, with cooler temperatures, rain, and fewer tourists. While the vineyards may not be as visually stunning during this time, you can still enjoy wine tastings and tours, as well as discounted accommodations and a more intimate experience. It’s also a great time to explore Sonoma’s dining scene, as many restaurants participate in the annual Sonoma County Restaurant Week.

What is the best way to get around Sonoma wine country?

Exploring Sonoma wine country is an enchanting experience, and one of the most enjoyable and stress-free ways to do so is by hiring a driver or booking a privately guided tour of the region. This option allows you to fully immerse yourself in the wine tastings and breathtaking scenery without worrying about navigation, parking, or driving under the influence. Having a knowledgeable local driver or tour guide can also greatly enhance your experience, as they can provide valuable insights, recommend hidden gems, and customize the itinerary based on your preferences. There are various transportation services and wine tour companies available in Sonoma that cater to different budgets and group sizes. From luxury sedans and limousines to comfortable vans and minibuses, you can choose the vehicle that best suits your needs. Everything from Sonoma tours with concierge services to both hiking and wine tasting tours exist in Sonoma . We include additional recommendations in this travel guide. I myself taken wine Bike Tours, it was the best experience of life and fun to do. But I’m looking to try something new I guess walking wine tour. Thanks for sharing such a great article.

' src=

Hello, I’m a bit confused for the walking wine tour. On this page it states “ALL wine tastings are included” under details. However if you click the link to purchase there is a bullet point that states “Wine tasting fees are not included (plan on fees of $15 -$30+ per person (some tasting rooms wave tasting fee with purchase or if you join their wine club)”. Just wanted to clarify if the walking tour ($69) includes or does not include wine tastings plus fees.

wine making tour sonoma

Every wine enthusiast knows and appreciates the winemaking process and how it from simple grapes to delicious vino. However, not many people have had the experience of learning how wine is made at an actual winery.

Every harvest season from August to October, wineries in Napa and Sonoma come alive with the excitement of what’s to come. Wineries in Sonoma and Napa Valley have employees picking grapes in vineyards for crush and visitors can enjoy special harvest tours to learn how production facilities work.

There are several ways you experience what it’s like to be a winemaker, especially during harvest season. If you cannot make it to wine country during harvest you can also take in a blending experience where you can become a master blender and take home your own blend of wine.  If you want to make your own wine and experience what it is like being a winemaker for a day, let California Wine Tours set your appointment with exceptional wineries in Napa and Sonoma Valley. This firsthand experience of making wine will transform your perception and make you appreciate a great blend even more.

To help you choose some of the best Napa and Sonoma Valley wineries offering a hands-on winery tour, California Wine Tours has curated a special list for you below:

Ram’s Gate Winery winemaking experience, Sonoma

Location : 28700 Arnold Dr., Sonoma

If you want to consider a winemaker for a day experience in Sonoma Valley, we recommend checking out the beautiful Ram’s Gate Winery. This winery produces single-vineyard wines and offers a fantastic hands-on winery tour. You will begin with a morning ramble at the Ram’s Gate Estate vineyard, and the estate’s winemaker might act as your guide. They will tell you about various details of the vineyard, such as the soil types, viticulture, trellising, and exposures.

Later, if there is thinning or leafing to be done, you’ll be asked to work in the vineyard canopy. If you pick the right weather, you will also visit the estate garden to pick out vegetables for lunch and stop at the apiary to check out the winery’s bees that produce delicious honey. The tour will take you to the barrel hall, where you will be assigned the winemaking task of the day: sorting grapes or bottling. Later, you can enjoy a delicious five-course flight in the tasting hall, along with the perfect seasonal pairings for the wine.

Conn Creek winemaking experience, St. Helena

Location : 8711 Silverado Trail, St. Helena

napa winery tasting room

Conn Creek Winery is very enthusiastic about providing wine education and built a special room for it in 2006. It was stacked with barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon and became the training ground for professionals who wanted to learn about the industrial winery business in Napa Valley. After more than 10 years, the Conn Creek Blending Experience has become a must-visit institution in Napa.

The hands-on winery tour will make you feel like a true winemaker for a day as you sample Conn Creek’s best blend. Then, you will enter a quiet room with dramatic lighting, where you will learn to recognize the characteristics of Napa cab growing areas using an aroma wheel. You can expect laboratory beakers and pipettes to be involved as you create a Bordeaux blend. To create the best blend, you will use current vintages of  Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec varieties.

After creating the perfectly proportioned wine as per your palate, you will bottle, label, and cork your wine to take home to enjoy with your family. The experience by Conn Creek is highly rated by visitors due to the amazing enological knowledge gained on the tour.

Judd’s Hill winemaking experience, Napa

Location : 2332 Silverado Trail, Napa

If you want something completely unique, you need to check out the bottle blending day camp at Judd’s Hill. Aside from the educational aspect, the winemaker for a day experience focuses on allowing visitors to have fun. If the weather is nice and the visiting group is large enough, you will be invited to camp at the vineyard view crush pad that overlooks the vineyard, which sources Kairos Cabernet Sauvignon.

During the hands-on winery tour, you will measure and mix wine using graduated flasks and cylinders. You can swirl and sip on wine while talking to other visitors as different groups work on assembling their favorite blends. Afterward, the camp counselors will review the blends, and each group will then bottle, hand-cork, and cap their personalized labels to take home as a souvenir. It is a great team-building activity, and you can take a lot of your exclusive wine home.

Buena Vista Winery winemaking experience, Sonoma

Location : 18000 Old Winery Rd., Sonoma

If you have ever dreamed of becoming a winemaker for a day in the late 19 th century, the Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma can make your wishes come true. To start off the tour, you will don a long black wool coat and a top hat to represent the style of 1857, the year Buena Vista Winery was founded. Then, you’ll be guided to the wine caves of the stone winery for an unforgettable blending winemaking experience called Be the Count.

The Cave of Curiosity will be your next location, where you will blend wine surrounded by historical treasures and tools. You will be kept company by eerie glass-encased owls, golden crowns, and a wine guide speaking in sonnets. Here, you will create a delicious blend from Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, and Grenache per your preference. Afterward, you will bottle, cork, and brand your bottle with a personalized label before returning home to share it with loved ones.

Are you excited to explore some of the most popular winemaker-for a day wineries in Sonoma and Napa Valey? Our experts can help you discover the best hands-on winery tour experiences in the region.

Your Independent Guide to the Wine Country

The 15 Best Sonoma Wineries To Visit

Allison Levine [January 2024]

Sonoma wine country

When visiting Sonoma , where does one get started wine tasting? As a region, Sonoma County encompasses more than fifty miles from Carneros in the south to Cloverdale in the north. It is home to seventeen American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). Some are well-known such as Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Alexander Valley, to name a few, and others are lesser known such as Moon Mountain, Fort-Ross Seaview, and Green Valley. Sonoma is home to the state of California’s oldest commercial winery, Buena Vista, as well as the oldest continuously operating family winery, Gundlach Bundschu. And, there are more than 425 wineries on almost 60,000 acres. That means there are a lot of decisions to be made before you start a Sonoma wine tasting adventure.

Unlike Sonoma’s neighbor to the east, Napa , where there are wineries located off of the main highway, many of the wineries in Sonoma are spread throughout the valley. So where do you begin? It is easier to find some of the bigger known wineries in the county, but seeking out small and medium-sized boutique wineries is what I prefer to do. Here are eleven Sonoma wine tasting finds that are worth a visit throughout the valley.

As you enter Sonoma Valley, the first area is Carneros, which actually sits in both Napa and Sonoma Counties.

1) Schug Carneros Estate (www.schugwinery.com) |  Save on Schug tastings with the Priority Wine Pass

Started in 1980 by Walter Schug, Schug Carneros Estate sits on fifty acres that overlook Carneros. Walter Schug was a pioneer of pinot noir, having been raised in Germany where his father ran the first pinot noir estate along the Rhine River in Germany.

Schug emigrated to the U.S. in 1961 and after working for Julian Gallo, he worked at Joseph Phelps where he created the infamous Insignia. Desiring to make pinot noir, Schug created his own label in 1980 and opened the winery in 1989. Although Walter Schug passed away in 2015, the winery is still family owned and run by his son Axel.

Winemaker Michael Cox has been with Schug for twenty-one years and is focused on producing elegant wines. Stop by the tasting room for a $10 tasting or set up a private winery tour and tasting where you will enjoy the Schug Rouge du Noir Brut sparkling wine, as well as selected chardonnay, pinot noir, and cabernet sauvignon, paired with cheeses.

Continue your Sonoma wine tasting tour north of Carneros is the town of Sonoma. Centered around the largest plaza in California, the Sonoma Square is home to a number of tasting rooms worth a visit.

2) Sojourn Cellars (www.sojourncellars.com):

soujorn winery tasting

Beginning with sourcing pinot noir from the famous Sangiacomo Vineyard, today they work with some of the best vineyards in Sonoma and Napa.

Focusing on balanced wine, Sojourn Cellars believes in being hands-off in the winemaking process by using natural yeasts and not filtering or fining the wines. In the end, they are able to capture the time and place in the bottle. Today they produce 8500 cases of wine. They include nine pinot noirs, seven of which are single vineyard They also produce cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay.

Schedule an appointment in the Sojourn Salon. Here you can enjoy a seated comparison tasting of the wines produced from various vineyards.

3) Pangloss Cellars (www.panglosscellars.com):

Located in the Sonoma Plaza, the Pangloss tasting room is in a restored building built in 1902. It is a magnificent space, with high ceilings, exposed brick walls, a large bar in the center of the room. There are couches and chairs positioned throughout the space for small groups.

Winemaker Erich Bradley of Sojourn Cellars also makes the wines for Pangloss. Bradley focuses on expressing the terroir in the wines he produces. He wants each wine to have its own personality. The wines are accessible and taste good, and are even better when enjoyed in a wine and food flight.

Enjoy a flight of white wines with a selection of caviar, a Burgundy flight with cheese, a Sonoma flight with charcuterie, a Bordeaux flight with pate or a red wine flight with chocolates.

Producing less than 1000 cases of each wine, ranging from Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay to Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and a Rhone blend, the Pangloss wines are only available for purchase at the tasting lounge.

4) Auteur Wines (https://www.auteurwines.com):

auteur tasting room

The winery was recently written up in Wine Spectator as one of the Top 10 Sonoma Pinot Noirs to Try Now, so be sure to schedule an appointment if you want to visit.

The Auteur tasting room is a small house just off the Sonoma Plaza and visiting is like going to a friend’s home. It is relaxed and intimate and each room in the house offers a cozy tasting area. In the living room, you can sit on couches as you taste.  Larger groups can center around the dining room table or head outside to the outdoor patio.

5) Three Sticks Wines (www.threestickswines.com):

three sticks winery

Founded in 2002 by owner William Price III, known as Billy Three Sticks growing up surfing in Hawaii, Three Sticks focuses on producing wines from some of Sonoma’s best vineyards, including Durell and Gap’s Crown. Three Sticks produces approximately 4000 cases per year of chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, as well as a tasting room exclusive of white, red, and rosè Rhone blends. These wines can all be enjoyed at The Adobe where the tasting room is located. The Adobe was home to Don Juan Casteñado, secretary to General Vallejo, in 1842. Price and his wife purchased this historic home in 2012 and spent two years renovating and restoring it. Today it is open via appointment only. Enjoy a tasting of four current releases for $35 or a library tasting of seven wines for $70. The Adobe is a place of warmth and hospitality and whether you sit inside the home or in the outdoor garden, an intimate tasting of Three Sticks winery will be memorable.

6) Kamen Estate Wines (www.kamenwines.com):

kamen winery vineyards

The vineyard is one of the first organic certified vineyards in the country. Kamen Estate Wines produces 3000 cases of primarily cabernet sauvignon, as well as sauvignon blanc, grenache, syrah and cabernet franc. Stop in at the tasting room along the Sonoma Plaza or schedule a tasting that will take you into the vineyard at the top of Moon Mountain where you can sip wine as you overlook Sonoma Valley.

Your Sonoma wine tasting adventure continues a little further up the road from Sonoma in the town of Kenwood, home to more tasting rooms and restaurants.

7) B Wise (www.bwisevineyards.com) |   Save on B Wise tastings with the Priority Wine P ass

Brian Wise purchased 100 acres in Moon Mountain in 2001. He was drawn to the undeveloped property that had been an old stone quarry at the turn of the century because of its proximity to the iconic Monte Rosso vineyard. The twenty-one acres of vineyards are planted at an elevation of 700 feet in red volcanic ash which gives the cabernet sauvignon a fresh, vital quality with bright aromas of dark red fruits and minerality.

The tasting room in Kenwood is a modern lounge with a bar, tables, and couches but the real treat is to book a private tasting in the Cellar Reserve Room at the vineyard. Heading up Moon Mountain, you will be taken into the caves that are home to the perfect “man cave” where you can enjoy reserve and library selection.

Up the road from Kenwood is Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa is the largest city in Sonoma County. You will head off the main road to the wineries of the Russian River for more great Sonoma wine tasting options.

inman family wines

8) Inman Family Wines (www.inmanfamilywines.com):

Inman Family Wines has been producing wine since 2000. Owner and winemaker, Kathleen Inman organically farms 10.45 acres at her Olivet Grange Vineyard in the heart of the Russian River.

Producing 3000 cases of pinot noir, chardonnay, and pinot gris, the wines are elegant and subtle. These are not big ripe wines but rather wines with low alcohol, high acidity, and perfect to pair with food.

The Inman tasting room is located at the winery in the vineyard. Inman’s focus on sustainable winemaking translates to the winery which is made almost entirely from recycled materials. Tastings are available Thursday through Sunday by appointment only. And, if you are looking for somewhere to stay, Inman offers a three-bedroom, one-bathroom farmhouse on the property with the motto of “bed and get your own breakfast.”

As you continue to head north towards Healdsburg, make a stop in the town of Windsor. The town is not much larger than a few streets but tucked in some warehouses is Artisan Alley Windsor, home to artisanal wine, cider, and spirit producers.

9) Two Shepherds (www.twoshepherds.com):

two shepards winery

From his writing to his natural ability to make wine, he was known as the “palate shepherd.” As a shepherd of both the palate and the wine, the name Two Shepherds was born.

Allen takes a minimalist approach to winemaking. With only 1500 cases of wine produced, the wines are unfiltered and unfined. Allen is focused on Rhone blends, including amazing carignan and rosè carignan from 45-year-old head-trained vines that are dry farmed. Producing wines for wine geeks, be sure to try the trousseau gris made from the only planting in California.

Two Shepherds tasting room is open every Saturday but if you are there on another day, call ahead to make an appointment.

From Windsor, head further north to the town of Healdsburg. This is a prime Sonoma wine tasting spot.

10) MacRostie Winery and Vineyard (www.macrostiewinery.com):

MacRostie Winery was originally opened in 1987 by Steve MacRostie. A visionary, MacRostie was one of the first people to plant in the fog-shrouded vineyards of Sonoma County. After thirty years, he sold to Distinguished Vineyards and Wine Partners in 2011 but still guides the winemaking along with winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen.

MacRostie produces pinot noir and chardonnay from numerous sites including the fifty-eight acres from the Wildcat Mountain Vineyard that was planted in 1998. In February 2015, MacRostie Winery opened the winery and tasting room on Westside Road.

Sitting on twenty-eight acres, thirteen of which are planted to pinot noir, the estate house is a modern facility with views overlooking Sonoma County. From the moment you walk up and are greeted with a glass of chardonnay to sitting on the patio or in the living room, you may never want to leave.

11) Jordan Winery ( www.jordanwinery.com ):

Located in Healdsburg, but within the Alexander Valley AVA, Jordan Winery produces Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon and Russian River Valley Chardonnay.

After a drive up the long hill and driveway, you will find the magnificent Jordan Winery Chateau that sits on the 1200 acres owned by the family. In addition to 112 acres of vineyards, there are eighteen acres of olive groves, a two-acre vegetable garden, fruit trees and flower garden, a bass lake, and livestock, including fifty-three black Angus cattle, seventeen chickens, two mini-donkeys, a maverick, and a goose. And, the winery is one hundred percent solar-powered, especially in the summer.

Visits to Jordan Winery are appointment only but you can select a library tasting, a winery tour, and library tasting or an estate tour and tasting which will take you by luxury shuttle around the immense property.

12. Pedroncelli Winery (https://www.pedroncelli.com)

Pedroncelli Winery is a fourth-generation family-owned winery in the Dry Creek Valley, a region known for its Zinfandel that first planted by Italian immigrants. The Pedroncelli family has been producing wine for 90 years and is run by second, third, and fourth-generation family members.

Pedroncelli’s certified sustainable estate vineyards include 50 acres on the home ranch, another 50 acres across Dry Creek, and the 15-acre Bushnell Vineyard that sits on a high bench in the middle of Dry Creek Valley. On the home ranch, there are 33 aces of Zinfandel, with some of the oldest vines more than 100 years old.

Pedroncelli produces an extensive line that includes three Zinfandels, three Cabernet Sauvignons, three Chardonnays, and more. Make a reservation for a tasting at Pedroncelli and you can choose your own flight of wines or let Pedroncelli chose a preorganized flight for you.

13. ACORN Winery (https://acornwinery.com)

ACORN Winery, located in the Russian River Valley, is owned by Bill and Betsy Nachbaur. In 1990, they purchased the historic 32-acre Alegría Vineyard which included eight-and-a-half acres planted to heritage grapes dating back to 1890.

The Alegría Vineyard is certified sustainable, and Bill and Betsy are maintaining the tradition of the vineyard with field blends. Twenty-six acres are planted to approximately 40 different grape varieties, including heritage grapes, such as Zinfandel, Petit Sirah, Carignan, and Alicante Bouschet, as well as Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, and Dolcetto. They also have many other lesser-known varieties, such as Freisa, Graciano, Plavac Mali (from Croatia), and Liatiko (from Crete), to name a few. The diverse grape varieties grow together, are harvested together, are crushed together, and are co-fermented.

ACORN Winery specializes in interesting and delicious field blends. Book a tasting in advance and you will likely be joined by either Betsy or Bill who will share a selection of their wines in a casual, private tasting.

14. Benziger Family Winery (https://www.benziger.com)

The Benziger Family created their family winery in 1980 after purchasing the Wegener Ranch on Sonoma Mountain in Glen Ellen. The first winery in Napa and Sonoma County to be certified as a Biodynamic winemaker, the Benzigers have farmed their 86-acre property using certified Biodynamic, organic, and sustainable farming methods for more than 20 years.

Rated among The 7 Best Sonoma County Wine Tours by Winecountry.com and USA Today Readers Choice Awards winner of the Best Winery Tour, a visit to Benziger is not complete without an in-depth tour of the biodynamically farmed estate. Book the Biodynamic Vineyard Tram Tour to get a broad overview of the property, the history of the winery, and the winery's Biodynamic farming practices. Visit the insectary, a garden of plants that attract beneficial insects, the wine cave, and see the Scottish Highlander cattle and sheep whose job it is to eat the weeds, till the soil with their hooves, and fertilize the vines.

15. Ram’s Gate Winery (https://ramsgatewinery.com)

Ram’s Gate, founded in 2011, sits on a 28-acre estate in which the Sonoma Valley ends on the south side of the vineyard, the Sonoma Coast on the east, and Carneros on the west. Primarily Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producers, Ram’s Gate also makes small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Blanc. Ram’s Gate offers a diverse selection of wines ranging from blends that express the diversity of the Sonoma region to single-vineyard wines that speak to where they are from.

Reserve one of the experiences offered by Ram’s Gate, ranging from a seated wine tasting to a caviar experience. Between May and October, Ram’s Gate offers the Sip and Savor at the Pond Experience where you can relax in a cabana or in Adirondack chairs around the pond and enjoy a bottle of wine with friends. And if you bring your appetite, indulge in a wine and food pairing experience with five seasonal courses crafted by Executive Chef Ruby Oliveros paired with five wines, hand-selected by General Manager and Director of Winemaking Joe Nielsen.

As you plan your next Sonoma  wine tasting tour, be sure to schedule appointments in advance at these eleven Sonoma wineries finds to get the most out of your visit.

Toast to Taste: Exploring the Ultimate Wine Tasting Experience in Sonoma County

Everyone hopes for the ultimate wine tasting experience when anticipating a trip. Research and planning take a lot of time, so I hope this blog can lend the guidance you’ve been seeking.

Wine Tasting Experiences in Sonoma County

The Wine Road in Northern Sonoma County offers everything to create the ultimate wine tasting experience —stellar wines, breathtaking scenery and world-class hospitality. And when not wine tasting, enjoy endless recreational activities, art galleries, museums, explore large and small towns, attend concerts and check out the food scene.

Sonoma County: A Haven for Wine Enthusiasts

Historical records of grapegrowing and winemaking in Sonoma County date back to the 1800s. Italian immigrants, upon seeing the Northern Sonoma County landscape, were reminded of the undulating hillsides of Tuscany and Umbria. This winemaking legacy adds depth to the present-day wine industry, as wineries build on and further expand the county’s reputation. Several of the family wineries along the Wine Road date back well over a century.

Foreground is grape vines starting to turn red with fall colors. In the background are hillsides covered in grapevines. To the right side is the roof of a small building.

Diversity of Vineyards

Along with this rich history, Sonoma County offers great diversity in grapegrowing with its many microclimates. This diversity allows grape farmers to grow a wide array of grapes, from world-renowned Pinot Noirs in the Russian River Valley to classic Cabernet Sauvignons and other Bordeaux varietals in Alexander Valley. You’ll find Rhone varietals like Grenache thriving in Dry Creek Valley, and Spanish varietals like Tempranillo flourishing here as well.

Wine Options

Due to the diversity of the growing climate and conditions within Sonoma County, the local wineries also offer a multiplicity of choices. You can find hundreds of wineries that produce Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. But you can also find Viognier, Vermentino, Pinot Blanc, Mourvèdre, Petit Verdot, Dolcetto and many other less-known varietals.

The Wine Road offers the perfect tool to help you locate the wine you’re looking for. At WineRoad.com, select Winery List under Wineries to get to a search page. Click on the drop down for “Search by Wine Type” and find a long list of options. Pick the wine or blend of your choice, and you’ll instantly get a list of wineries that produce that wine. This powerful tool is the first step in developing your ultimate wine tasting experience.

Planning Your Sonoma Wine Tasting Adventure

Does your wine tasting adventure have you enjoying a series of formal tastings with food pairings, or causal drop in tastings, or maybe a mixture of both? Is this adventure about exploring new Sonoma County wineries and new wine varietals, or it is taking a deeper dive into your favorite wine preferences?

Woman and man sitting outside on a patio toasting with red wine in their glasses.

Defining, Researching, Selecting

Defining your expectations is a key step before starting your research. If you’re only looking for casual, no appointment necessary tastings, no problem. The Wine Road has a list of wineries where walk-in visitors are welcome. With this list of wineries, you can now compare it to your wine type list to narrow down which wineries serve the wines you’re most interested in. Next you might explore the online Wine Road map page . Sonoma County is a large area, and knowing the distance between each planned stop will help you gauge how many wineries you can visit in a day. It will also help you plan a logical route.

If you prefer a paper map and are planning your wine tasting adventure in advance, you can order a Wine Road map that also gives key information about each winery listed. Even if you’re not fond of printed maps, I always recommend having a Wine Road map with you, as cell service in rural Sonoma County can be spotty and a map might be the only tool you have to guide you to your next destination.

More Research Options

If you’re looking for a more formal or educational tasting, check out Experiences under Explore at WineRoad.com. There are also many more tools within WineRoad.com to help you define and select your tasting path. The Wineries search tool lets you search by Winery Name, Region, Wine Type or Amenity.

Web page with the words EXPERIENCES written on a photo with a few tables in chairs inside and out on a deck. Long copy appears below the image.

As you check out the pages under Explore, you’ll discovered in-depth information about each of the appellations or regions within Wine Road — Alexander Valley , Dry Creek Valley and Russian River Valley .

Reservation Required

Many of the smaller Sonoma County wineries require reservations. If you’re interested in visiting one of the many by-appointment wineries, go to the winery’s website and follow the steps to book your appointment. Remember to give yourself at least 60-90 minutes for each tasting appointment, plus plenty of time to drive to your next appointment. Your Sonoma wine tasting adventure is about relaxing and having fun, so don’t overbook your day!

Most reservation systems require the tasting fee be paid at the time the appointment is booked. Tasting fees vary, and will increase if you select a food pairing or an educational tasting. Wineries generally explain their tasting fee policy on their website or when you book your appointment. If the information isn’t clear, call the winery to get an in-depth explanation.

The Wine Tasting Experience: What to Expect

If you’re new to wine tasting, it might seem intimidating. Wine Road’s goal is to help everyone feel comfortable visiting wineries and learning about and enjoying wine. To help you along this journey, check out Tasting Tips page. It covers general wine tasting tips, tasting etiquette, getting the most out of wine tasting, and tasting fees. And if you don’t understand the wine jargon, the Wine Road has an online glossary of terms to help you navigate the language of wine.

Wine Tasting Formats

Although some wineries continue to offer wine tasting at a bar, many wineries now have seated tasting, both indoors and outdoors. You may be offered a list of wines of which you can select 4 to 5 tastes, or you might be asked to select a tasting flight, with the price of the tasting flights varying depending upon the retail price of the wines in each flight. Other wineries might have a set number of wines open each day, and those are the only tasting wines available for that day.

Man pouring wine for two woman seated at a table on a lawn with flowering bushes in the background. There is also another table to the left side with a man and woman drinking wine. Another woman is walking among the flowering bushes.

If you’ve booked a tasting appointment, you may have to select the wine flight or wine and food pairing experience in advance. Generally, a winery’s website will explain the various tasting options and prices for each option. If the information isn’t available on the winery’s website or social media page, give them a call so you know what wines will be poured, and that it fulfills your expectations for your ultimate wine tasting experience.

Maximizing Your Wine Tasting Experience

Here are few quick tips to make the most of your wine tasting experience:

  • Ask questions. The wineries want to share information with you, but unless you ask, you might not hear about the information you’re most interested in.
  • Take notes. Unless you have a photographic memory, it’s always a good idea to jot down your favorite wines and wineries that you discover during your visit to Sonoma County’s Wine Country. Wineries often will have a printed list of their wines you can write your notes on.
  • Don’t wear scents. Scented products will affect your ability to detect the aromas of wine, which will alter your perception of the wine’s taste. Plus, your scented product will ruin the tasting experience for those around you.
  • Stay hydrated. I’d encourage you to drink water before, during and after each winery visit. Without water, you can quickly develop palate fatigue and you’ll no longer be able to completely discern the nuanced differences of the wines.
  • Plan Food. Depending upon your wine tasting path, you might want to have lunch in one of the towns in Sonoma County. But you might prefer to pack a picnic and enjoy the beautiful winery picnic grounds. Just be sure you plan to taste at the winery where you’ll be picnicking.
  • Designated Driver. Decide who in your group will be the designated driver before you begin your wine tasting adventure.

Hidden Gems Along the Sonoma County’s Wine Road

The list of Sonoma County wine tasting hidden gems might go on for pages, but I’ve picked out a few that shouldn’t be missed and explain why.

Colagrossi Wines – The industrial warehouse location might not ooze charm, but Craig Colagrossi’s warm hospitality and intriguing Italianate wines will win you over.

Mounts Family Wines – Besides having exceptional wines, the views from the outdoor tasting area are breathtaking and their hospitality is unrivaled.

David Coffaro Vineyards – If you looking for eclectic, quirky and wonderful, you found it!

Idlewild Wines – Tucked off the plaza in Healdsburg, the Idlewild wines hit every mark for those looking for lesser-known varietals.

Leo Steen Wines – Winemaker and owner Leo Hansen searches out hidden gem vineyards and then creates expressive, delicious wines from unexpected varietals.

Porter Creek Vineyards – Besides having the best wisteria and chickens along the Wine Road, the wines and the views are worth the drive to this off the beaten path location.

Woodenhead Vintners – With spectacular views from the deck, Zina’s hospitality and a delightful collection of local art, the wines might seem secondary, but one sip and you’ll know they’re the star of this stop.

Beyond Wine: Pairing Experiences in Sonoma

As with any good marriage, the union of wine and food elevates both. Wine and food pairing in Sonoma County will also elevate your wine tasting experience.

Here’s a list of a few wineries offering wine and food pairing experiences:

Bricoleur Vineyards – The lovely grounds and fabulous food pairings will make your day!

Capo Creek Ranch – Owner, winemaker and chef Mary Roy offers a choice of four wine and food pairing experiences.

deLorimier Winery – Every Saturday, their wine educator and the estate chef offer an immersion into the world of wine and food, sharing plenty of information including what make the perfect wine and food pairing.

Kendall Jackson – Choose from three diverse wine and food pairings or opt for a one-of-a-kind picnic.

Lynmar Estate – Billed as providing the ultimate luxury wine and food experience, Lynmar Estate’s chef offers an elevated multi-course lunch paired with their Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.

Please note that all wine and food pairing experiences require advance reservations.

Sonoma County’s Other Experiences

Sonoma County offers so many opportunities for recreation, culture and visual beauty. When you’re ready for a break from wine tasting, a drive to the ocean will provide multiple places to stop, drink in the views and walk along the ocean on trails or on the beach. If you like kayaking, canoeing, boating, biking, hiking, swimming, fishing, horseback riding, ziplining and more, explore a comprehensive overview of all the outdoor activities Sonoma County offers.

The backroads of Sonoma County offer beauty around every turn. Wine tasting will take you down many of these scenic drives, as will the drive to Highway 1 and down the Pacific coast. Point your car, pick a road and enjoy the stunning scenery throughout Sonoma County, but be sure a trip to the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve is on the list.

Bringing Sonoma Home: Purchasing and Shipping Wine

One of the best parts of visiting Sonoma County wineries is bringing home your favorite wines from your wine tasting experience. But can you actually ship the wine home? Each state and country has different laws regarding shipping wine. Most states now allow direct shipping, but a few do not. Check with the winery or the shipping company you decide to use. You might also check the Wine Institute’s site to view current shipping regulations by state.

When you buy wine through a Sonoma County winery, they can also ship the wine for you if your state allows interstate wine shipments. Just ask about shipping options when purchasing wine. You can also check wine as luggage as long as it’s in an airline approved shipping box. Luggage fees may apply.

Deciding What to Buy

Taking visitors wine tasting is something I do frequently. Before we set out on our wine tasting adventures, we always start with “the talk.” My questions are: How much wine can you take with you as luggage, and what is your wine buying budget? After I hear the answers, I can help guide my guests to make the right decision on what to purchase, what to take home on the plane, and what to ship.

If you’re buying a full case of wine from one winery, it’s best to have that winery ship the wine for you. If you’re only buy a bottle or two at each winery, then it’s better to get an airline approved shipping box or two and take the wine with you when you fly home.

A young woman in the back of a card with several wine shipping boxes.

Taking Notes

Earlier I recommended taking notes at each stop, and here is why. You might want to spread out your purchases over time, but you need to remember what you like from each winery. Be sure to sign up at each winery so you can receive information from the wineries about new releases, shipping specials or other offers. Wine Club Options

When you love every wine you taste at a winery, you might consider joining their wine club. Not only will you get those wines shipped directly to you throughout the year, but there are also several other considerations to joining a wine club.

Here are some of the potential benefits:

  • You’ll get wine shipped directly to you a few times a year, plus most wineries offer discounts on wines to their club members.
  • Often limited-production or older vintage wines are only available to club members.
  • Tasting fees are generally waived for club members.
  • The winery may host wine club-only events or allow members to attend events at a discounted rate.
  • Some wineries have guesthouses that club members can rent at reduced rates.
  • Some wineries offer discounted shipping to their wine club members.

Joining multiple clubs allows you to keep our cellars stocked with all your favorite wines.

Keep in mind wine club benefits vary from winery to winery.

Chardonnay is one of the wine world’s most recognized grapes. Its track record of producing some of the worlds finest whites has made it an extremely (and internationally) popular among winemakers hoping to produce head-turning bottlings as well as producers aiming for high volume and value. Featured in this Tasting Highlights are Chardonnays made around the globe, from classic regions like Burgundy ’s Mâconnais and Californian's Russian River Valley to South Africa and beyond. Even better, these wines come with relatively wallet-friendly prices ($50 or less, to be more precise).

Thanks to its ability to adapt to a range of climatic conditions , and its tendency for vigorous growth, Chardonnay is comparatively easy to cultivate. This also means it can yield a variety of styles depending on where it's grown. Wine Spectator 's tastings reflect this diversity and versatility: In 2023, our editors blind-tasted more than 1,100 Chardonnays from a wide spectrum of regions.

This lineup includes Copaín's Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2021, one of the top scorers, which shows peach, cream and lemon mint notes. Read on to get our score and full tasting note for this wine and 10 others!
