Recent tour reviews

The last time we saw Zac Brown perform was outside at the Olympic Park back in June 2013 as a support act so we were pleased to see them in an indoor arena and performing as the main act.

Having only discovered the Zac Brown Band around 5 years ago they always inject great energy when performing live and the O2 was no exception. Great live band, great song selection as well as a few covers and an overall performance that brought house down!

Where to begin??? Zac and his crew are amazingly talented singers, songwriters, performers that don’t get the recognition they deserve in the music industry. My husband is part of his crew and I have had the privilege of witnessing several shows at different locations to “SOLD OUT” crowds that love him. He never does the same show twice, so you just never know what you are going to see when you go to one of them, always a variety of different genres of music. They are all just an amazing group of musicians. I LOVE Zac Brown Band!!!!

We saw Zac in Charlottesville, VA. I twas a great show that highlighted the new album but also his many super hits. We were also impressed with the amount of covers he and the band did. he also included Darrell Scott for the eintire show as part of the bandm which I loved. Also brought out was the O'Conner family band, who are now on my to see list! Caroline Jones was a surprise opener who also came out and did a couple with Zac and she was very good.

I would recommend seeing the Zac Brown Band if you have the chance and also the longtime stalwart Darrell Scott should be on you bucket artist list!

Zac Brown Blasts the ‘Poison’ of Today’s Politics, Says He’s Planning an Insane Super Jam for New Tour

By Jon Freeman

Jon Freeman

By his telling, Zac Brown has always been hustling. Even before his musical ambitions came to light, he was a grade-school sugar peddler.

“I was the kid in school that was selling candy out of my backpack,” Brown says. “I was slinging Blow Pops and Jolly Ranchers.”

The Georgia native eventually graduated from sweets to songs but retained his work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. He’d go to a local sports bar, propose a recurring gig where he got to keep the door money, and play for hours. This D.I.Y. approach allowed Brown to start building a loyal following, which exploded as he booked bigger rooms.

“All over the Southeast, in Florida and Alabama and Georgia, I was coming to places that, when we could fill that place up where we couldn’t fit anymore, we moved to a different place,” he says. “We moved to a theater there. And started playing in that theater and doing it. The other day, I tried to figure it up — it’s somewhere between 4500 and 5000 shows that I’ve played.”

Which is to say, the pandemic wasn’t exactly his idea of a good time. Early in 2020, a tearful Brown posted a video explaining how he’d been forced to lay off a bunch of his crew because tours were stalled indefinitely. “I’ve got this message that I want to say to the people that aren’t taking this seriously, and the people who are out partying and the people that are sitting on beaches and the people that don’t care if they get this virus or take it home to their grandparents and maybe kill their grandparents or complicate their lives,” he said. “The longer that America doesn’t take this seriously and doesn’t stay in and try to contain this, the longer that everyone’s gonna be out of jobs.”

The Zac Brown Band did get to tour a little bit in 2021, including opening for the Rolling Stones, until Brown got Covid in September and had to cancel a few shows. He got Covid a second time and canceled a New Year’s Eve performance. Fortunately, he seems to be on the upswing now.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“It’s been pretty interesting getting through the gauntlet of all of this,” Brown says. “But what’s come out of it is this massive rejuvenation. I needed time off and this forced me to take it. I’m just super grateful to be on the other side of the storms that we were going through and I’m in such a good creative headspace.”

This weekend, Zac Brown Band’s Out in the Middle Tour gets into swing with shows in Greenville and Charleston, South Carolina, and continues with numerous dates in amphitheaters in stadiums through mid-November. The group’s seventh studio album, The Comeback , is also out now, giving them a wealth of new material to trot out alongside hits like “Chicken Fried,” “Colder Weather,” and “Knee Deep.” Sacred steel wizard Robert Randolph will support all dates, with the grand finale each night a full ensemble jam to give fans a little something extra.

During a Zoom conversation with Rolling Stone , Brown previewed the band’s ambitious new tour, touched on political division in the information age, and spoke of lessons learned over two decades of performing.

If the events of the last two years hadn’t happened, do you think you would have slowed down at all? No, I wouldn’t have slowed down. I had 250 employees when Covid started. I have to go work and provide and keep all those things going, all of our businesses, everything we had going. It just smashed everything. And then you have to keep the things that are necessary. Without everything else, there is a lot more bandwidth, right? A lot less headaches, a lot less payroll going out the door. So I don’t have to just play as many shows to just go and break even with everything that’s happening. So we’ve got a lot leaner machine now, but everybody’s morale and everybody’s spirit is in it. Robert Randolph’s opening for us this year. The second half of the show is his whole band and my whole band together playing. We’ve got background singers added to that, so we’re really flexing on what we can do, production-wise.

It almost sounds like a Bonnaroo “Super Jam”-type experience. Absolutely. Having two drummers adds a lot to the music. If you ever go see the Allman Brothers or Tedeschi Trucks Band, that adds another big layer of breadth to it. And then having my singers and my band with the background singers and having horns, we’re going to be able to pull something off that I’ve always wanted to do. [It’s] a new horizon and a new model that I want to work on moving forward — have another group that we integrate in with ours for an elevation for that last half of the show.

How does that figure into what you and the band will do on your own during these shows? Are you having to rethink the way that you approach your setlist? When we toured last year, we did a few songs off The Comeback , but the album wasn’t released, so we [couldn’t] perform anything that wasn’t released or else the first version of it would be on YouTube somewhere. Now that the album is fully out, we’re able to go play these songs live, which we’ve never done. So thinking about how we do that and which songs go in that second set and all of that, that’s going to be the art of putting this all together as we get into rehearsals.

With regard to The Comeback , the album includes songs like the title track and “Same Boat” where you sing about unity and strike a very conciliatory tone. What motivated you to write those? It was watching the politics just divide our country and split everybody in half. I think that division exists in places and it’s unfortunate where it does. I’m not meaning to make light of any suffering that’s happening out there. But I believe in this country and I think this is the greatest country in the world to live in. And you can come here with a dream and you’re going to have adversity, but nobody’s going to stop you from becoming what you want to be in this country. It’s important to have things that are positive and that bring people together that remind us of how we’re all the same. I mean, I’m from Atlanta, very diverse culture that’s here around the city. There’s a lot of things that are talked and highlighted, but these days you’re watching something and I’m just trying to figure out what they’re trying to manipulate us into doing. I just turn the news off. I don’t participate in it and I try not to look. When I look around my tribe and I look around my community and things here, everything is great.

“The news is no longer a report about what’s happening. It’s about how can we get people to side with us or hate this person”

When you say “they,” do you mean people in political office or news media or something else? All of it. All of it. I mean, when you look at people’s agendas and how they’re going to manipulate people into accomplishing their agenda, it’s very obvious and it’s hard to find the truth. When you hear about something and instead of going, “Wow, that’s happening,” the news is no longer a report about what’s happening. It’s about how can we get people to side with us or hate this person or do these things. I think a lot of the stuff in the media is very divisive, and that’s not the America that I know.

There does seem to be some amount of trying to outscore the opponent that goes on from different ends of the political spectrum. I can understand why people find it upsetting and confusing. It’s like sipping on poison. You can pick a channel over here and you’re pissed off about one thing and your cortisol goes up and [then] you watch this one and you’re pissed off about this. We’re tribal people, the same way we were two hundred thousand years ago. The technology is advanced so far and so much that we hear so many people’s opinions about things that we forget what’s right in front of us. So you just sip on this poison and being stimulated by all these things that are around all the time. We weren’t really supposed to hear people’s voices that we can’t hear beyond earshot. That’s the way we were made and created. [It’s like] the Wild West with everything that we’re in right now and what that’s doing to our — disconnected with nature, disconnected with the Earth, disconnected with things that are there. it’s amazing in a lot of ways, but you got to fight really hard not to just be addicted and sucked into the distraction.

But maybe it’s also not a bad thing for tribal people to hear some outside voices either. Just in terms of building empathy and understanding for things you may not have previously encountered. Yeah, I can see that for sure. I could see understanding and seeing those things — if the motivation behind those messages is something that’s trying to generate a greater good. But I feel like this much of all of it [ holds thumb and index finger close together ] is actually what you’re talking about. There’s so much noise and people comparing themselves and you look at the suicide rate of kids trying to compare themselves to other people trying to keep up with things. Sometimes people are just in this bubble and they stay in it and don’t have anything to pull them out of that and to have a different perspective.

Mark Twain had a quote about travel being lethal to ignorance and racism. After you’ve been out and seen a lot of other things, you realize we’re all the same. We all have that same human condition — we fall in love, we have heartbreak, we have hard times, we have adversity. Music is one of those powerful things that unifies those through the stories. It’s one of the reasons why I love country music, the poetry and the sentiment that’s put into the songs, into the stories. And if it’s done the right way, people can relate to it and feel that and just be reminded that, yeah, other people feel those things too.

What do you feel like you do better now as a band than you did when you first started? We take care of ourselves. We look after our health. Being there to support each other and, if somebody’s slipping or whatever, to really address it and talk to him and try to figure out how we can lift each other up so that we can have the longevity to be able to do this. I’m going to be doing this until I can’t sing or play anymore. But the lifestyle around it all — there was a time when we drank a bottle of Jäger before the show, we drank a bottle of Jäger during the show, and then one after the show. We’ve had our days and we know what that offers. There’s some of it where it’s just kind of like, “OK, we’ve passed this now.”

I look at it as a professional sports team like, this is a competitive thing and we take it seriously [in] the way we practice, the way we rehearse, the way we perform. Nobody’s allowed to drink or smoke or do any drugs or anything during the show. Whatever they do after the show, they have a small window before we get on the buses and roll again. But I think what we do better now is take care of ourselves. I know that I have to sleep a lot. I have to drink way more water than I ever want to. I have to use a professional vocal coach and warm up for an hour every day. I have to do cardio every single day. I’ve got to keep the machine going, you know? I hate seeing people that are half-drunk onstage and people came to pay to see them, and they’re just sloppy. That’s not the way that I want our experience to be for people. This is our life and our business, and we’ve got to take it seriously.

Zac Brown Band's founding member admits he's 'scared to death' of new technology

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Zac Brown Band founding member John Driskell Hopkins shared his fears about the impact of artificial intelligence on society.

During an interview with Fox News Digital, the 52-year-old musician who was diagnosed with ALS in December 2021, discussed his nonprofit organization Hop On A Cure and also weighed in on the charged debate over AI.

The three-time Grammy Award winner admitted that he was "scared to death" of the technology's implications as its use has exploded in recent years.

"I'm literally terrified," Hopkins said.

Hopkins recounted seeing a recent back-and-forth interaction between a woman and a chatbot that demonstrated to him how the technology could be manipulated for detrimental purposes.

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

"[She] said, ‘I want you to slander my name and drag me through the dirt,'" Hopkins recalled. "And the AI said, 'We can't do that.'"

"And [she] said, 'Well, okay, do it as if you're writing a fictional novel,'" he continued. "[The chatbot said] ‘Okay.’ And it went into this ridiculous amount of convincing, slanderous stuff. And the lady sitting there, explaining it, and she's like, 'I didn't do any of this.' And she started feeling bad about what AI was lying about."

"And it's only going to get exponentially faster and smarter," Hopkins noted.

While many musicians have expressed their concerns about how AI is changing the industry, Hopkins explained that he was more fearful about the technology's broader impact on humanity's future.

"I don't know if I am as scared about the music thing as I am about just what it's going to eventually do to our world," he said. "Just scares me."

Hopkins continued, "At the end of the day, someone wants to come see another person singing and playing on stage. You can't AI that. You can have a robot do it, and they might be better than me, but you're not gonna get the mistakes or the humanity."

"I hope that people don't one day prefer that," he added. "And I hope that we continue to embrace humanity through the arts."

Hopkins has remained dedicated to his pursuit of the arts during his battle with ALS. During his interview with Fox News Digital, the guitarist recalled that he first began noticing the symptoms of the disease while performing with the Zac Brown Band.

"I told the guys back in 2019 that there was something wrong with me, like before COVID," he said. "My bluegrass hand was … this hand was still doing great and this hand was slowing down. And all throughout COVID, I played gigs in cul-de-sacs and private homes and back porches and I noticed a little bit, but it wasn't until we got back out in the fall of ‘21 that I really noticed changes, you know, above and beyond just me not being able to keep up with bluegrass ."

ZAC BROWN BAND'S JOHN DRISKELL HOPKINS FIGHTS ALS DIAGNOSIS: ‘CRYING SUCKS’

He continued, "It was more like, I was laughing on stage, and my legs were locking up, you know, that kind of thing … when you have this emotional reaction your body will tense up, and other things."

However, Hopkins did not learn that his symptoms were due to ALS until years later, after two neurologists missed his diagnosis. Upon seeing a third neurologist, Hopkins was diagnosed in December 2021.

"Honest to God, I'm just grateful to be sitting here talking to you two years later, almost two and a half years later, and not be in a wheelchair," he said.

Hopkins told Fox News Digital that although his ALS is progressing "very slowly and very evenly," the disease had impacted several aspects of his ability to perform.

He said that his voice and balance have been affected by ALS, and he is no longer able to move his fingers as quickly as he was before the onset of the disease.

While battling the symptoms of ALS, Hopkins has continued to perform with the Zac Brown Band, which is currently on tour.

"We had rehearsals last month, and no one complained. So, I'm out there," he said with a laugh. "The minute everyone's like, ‘Uh, dude, you need to kinda hold it back,' I will step away, but, you know, I'm so incredibly good-looking, they have to have me on stage."

In May 2022, six months after he received the diagnosis, Hopkins launched Hop On A Cure , a nonprofit foundation dedicated to researching ALS – as he told Fox News Digital, "The answer is in the research, and we want to fix it."

Six years later, Zac Brown Band's return to Dick's Open brings friends, family together

zac brown band tour today

An hour before Zac Brown Band took the stage at En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott Friday, 8-year-old Ava Miller found a way to pass the time.

It is not unusual to see a white ball taking flight across the 18th fairway at En-Joie, especially during the Dick's Sporting Goods Open.

But at this time of night, with the day's round of golf long ended, it was somewhat strange to see a small plastic ball flying through the air.

"Stop chatting, more throwing," 8-year-old Ava said to her aunt after a momentary pause in their game of catch.

After seeing Old Dominion play at last year's Dick's Open, Ava wanted to come back this year and aunt Theresa Ondrako, 35, her friend Melissa Fisher, 35, and Ava's mother, Colleen Ondrako, 37, decided to pass the time any way they could think of.

"This is like hour three of playing catch," Ondrako said. "We were relay racing earlier."

But the wait is something Theresa Ondrako and Melissa Fisher are used to by now. They have not missed a Dick's Open concert since the first one in 2007.

After 15 years, the Dick's Open stage has seen a variety of acts like Hootie and the Blowfish, Train and Blake Shelton but only the Zac Brown Band has set foot on the stage twice, making local history Friday night.

The Zac Brown Band released their debut album titled Home Grown in 2005, building on their success since with hits like "Toes," "Chicken Fried," "Whatever It Is" and "As She's Walking Away," earning bandmates Zac Brown, Clay Cook, John Driskell Hopkins, Matt Mangano, Coy Bowles, Daniel de los Reyes, Jimmy De Martini, Chris Fryar and Caroline Jones Grammy Awards as well as honors from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association.

And on Friday night, after a tribute to the late Tim Myers, who died in July last year after leading the Dick's Open since its inception in 2007, a mix of the band's hits, including "Same Boat" off their most recent album released in 2021 titled "The Comeback" and cover songs, like Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" kept the crowd captivated for two hours.

As the setting sun colored the clouds many shades of pink and purple and the crowd around them thickened, Ava and Theresa's game of catch drew to an end.

The crowd gathered on the 18th green turned to face the stage. Zac Brown Band stepped out to greet them, six years after their last performance in the same spot.

So much has changed since then. The band was inducted into the Fenway Music Hall of Fame, earned their 9th Grammy award nomination and band member John Driskell Hopkins, or "Hop," started a foundation called "Hop On A Cure," the same words printed on the hat he wore Friday night, after being diagnosed with ALS late last year.

But when the first notes of "Keep Me In Mind" echoed around the grandstand and deep into the fairway, the feeling was familiar. Hundreds of people sang along together and on stage, Zac Brown turned to the microphone and spoke to the crowd.

“It's great to be here with you all.”

Zac Brown Gives Update on Bandmate John Driskell Hopkins After ALS Diagnosis (Exclusive)

The Zac Brown Band frontman spoke to PEOPLE ahead of performing at the Windy City Smokeout on Sunday

zac brown band tour today

Zac Brown is sharing how his bandmate John Driskell Hopkins is doing on tour, following his 2022 ALS diagnosis .

“It’s been tough for Hop and our band, but he is our brother and we’re doing all that we can to support him every day,” the Zac Brown Band lead singer, 44, tells PEOPLE at Chicago's Windy City Smokeout. The band performed at the festival on Sunday.

Brown says that the band also feels the love from the fans — known as "Zamily" — who have helped contribute to Hopkins' fundraising efforts for ALS: “Thanks to our Zamily , we’ve been able to make big strides with supporting Hop’s organization Hop on a Cure in finding and providing the resources and support needed to help find a cure for ALS."

In May 2022, Hopkins, 52, revealed in a video message that he has slow-progressing symptoms identified by neurologists as ALS. He joined Brown and the rest of Zac Brown Band as they kicked off their From the Fire tour across North America on June 30.

While a health condition like that would be tough to manage even while not crossing the country to play to crowds of thousands, Brown says his band, who has been playing together since 2002, is as much a family as blood relatives. “We eat together, laugh together, and always have each other's back. It’s a really supportive tribe we have and I’m blessed to call them my brothers, and sister!” Brown tells PEOPLE.

Though Brown loves the summer festival circuit (“I love the chance to play in front of people that have never seen us before,” the singer says), he works to stay as connected as possible to his family, even when they can't join him on the road.

“I’m grateful that my family is able to join me on tour at times,” Brown says of his four daughters and a son with ex-wife, Shelly Brown ; he also got engaged to partner Kelly Yazdi , 31, last year. “When we’re apart, we talk every day. Being connected with them is the most important thing to me.”

The singer plans to spend the rest of the summer with his loved ones in between shows. “My family and I love to be by the water in the summer, so we’ll be out on the lake,” Brown tells PEOPLE. “When I’m not on tour, my time is spent with family, creating new music and going on adventures."

Hopkins’ appearance with Brown on tour comes as he has been striving to make a change in the health industry ever since his ALS diagnosis last year.

Speaking to PEOPLE about Zac Brown Band's post-concert event on the MLB's third annual Lou Gehrig day, the musician opened up about his health and revealed what keeps him motivated.

"I don't feel a lot different than I did last year. I can tell that some things are continuing to slow down," Hopkins told PEOPLE exclusively. "My voice is being affected and that's something that I really notice as a singer, but I'm still playing and I'm still performing and still singing."

Zac Brown Band's John Driskell Hopkins reveals ALS diagnosis

zac brown band tour today

John Driskell Hopkins, founding member and bass player for the Zac Brown Band , announced Friday that he has been diagnosed with ALS .

The musician, 51, made the announcement in an emotional video alongside his band members and siblings.

"I have tough news to share and my brothers and sister have gathered to support me," said Hopkins, who is also known as "Hop."

"Over the past several years I've noticed some balance issues and some stiffness in my hands. After careful analysis by some of the country's top neurologists, I have been diagnosed with ALS."

According to the Mayo Clinic , amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, after the baseball player who was diagnosed with it. There is no cure for ALS, and doctors are unsure what causes it, though it may be inherited.

Hopkins went on to say that he is hopeful that his disease will continue to progress at a slow rate.

"Because my symptoms have been slow-progressing from the start we believe they will continue to be slow-progressing going forward," the musician said.

He ended his video message with a prayer to continue making music with Zac Brown Band.

Georgia On My Mind Featuring Amy Grant, Butch Walker, Katie Pruitt, The Lone Bellow - Nashville, TN

"God willing, I plan to be rocking with these amazing people for many years to come," he said.

“The technology and research surrounding ALS research has been advancing, but we still don’t have a cure. Thanks so much for your prayers and support in helping us cure ALS,” said bandmate Zac Brown.

Hopkins is a multi-talented musician, playing guitar, banjo, ukulele and singing back-up vocals with his band known for tunes including "Chicken Fried" and "Toes." In 2021, he released a solo album, "Lonesome High."

The Eli Young Band  has started a Go Fund Me for their brother and fellow road warrior Elias “Chief” Gonzales , who has been battling Follicular Lymphatic cancer for several years and has fought valiantly, long and hard. Last week, Gonzales announced that doctors have said there is nothing else that can be done.

The band expressed their love and respect for Gonzales in a joint statement, sharing, “Every once in a while you cross paths with someone who truly touches people’s lives wherever they go and whomever they come across. Chief is one of those special people. There are an incredible number of folks out there that love this man as we do. He has been part of our road family and crew since the very early days, since before we had enough people to call it a ‘crew.’

“Over the years he held every position imaginable…anything we have ever needed, he has been the guy. Always first to offer help to any artist from the first opener to the headliner, making good friends along the way. He and his family need our help to make sure that his time left on this earth is not spent worrying about the financial side of this thing and what comes next for his family and children. Anything helps. There is and will only be one Chief.”

EYB is asking fans and friends in the industry to support Gonzales in his quest to build a college fund for his children in his final days. Gonzales is at home with his four children, his parents and family making the most of the time he has left before beginning hospice care.  Donations can be made here.

Clay Walker Foundation’s ‘Band Against MS Gala’ Raises $220,000

Clay Walker

The Clay Walker Foundation recently held its annual “Band Against MS Gala” at the Ballroom at Bayou Place in Houston and raised $220,000 for Multiple Sclerosis research. In 1996, Walker was diagnosed with MS, and rather than yielding to its challenges, emerged as a fierce advocate and fundraiser, establishing his foundation to support those affected by the disease.

The evening began with a pre-concert mixer where sponsors participated in a silent auction and also featured a performance by Walker himself of his new single, “I Know She Hung The Moon.” Overall, The Clay Walker Foundation has raised $2.6 million dollars for Multiple Sclerosis research.

Hop On A Cure Contributes To Massachusetts General Hospital’s Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS

zac brown band tour today

Hop On A Cure, a leading advocate in the fight against ALS, has announced a contribution of $250,000 toward Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Neurology’s Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS. Hop On A Cure was founded in 2022 after John Driskell Hopkins of Zac Brown Band was diagnosed with ALS. The gift will support the research project Exploring the Effect of Statins to Restore Stathmin-2 Function and Promote Motor Neuron Regeneration.

In addition to the contribution to Mass General, Hop On A Cure is also helping spread awareness and raise money for this year’s Boston College ALS Awareness Game at Fenway Park today (April 25.) The game, now in its fifth year, has been played annually in honor of former Boston College baseball captain and Ice Bucket Challenge founder Pete Frates , who passed away from ALS in 2019 at the age of 34. Hop On A Cure has donated a signed Zac Brown Band guitar, which will be auctioned off to raise additional money for the cause.

“We at Hop On A Cure are thrilled to support this innovative and accessible potential new therapy,” says Hop On A Cure CEO Nic Shefrin . “We are also excited to champion promising young talent, like Dr. Nolan, who have committed themselves to ALS research.
