Kanzwa short holiday break excursion - 2 Nights Safari Tour to Kafue National Park - Central Region Tour

Kanzwa short holiday break excursion - 2 Nights Safari Tour to Kafue National Park - Central Region

Really enjoyed my three day/two night Karfue National Park tour with this team. If you’re after personal, customised service, then these guys will be able to help you. The park itself is enormous… Probably best combined with one of the other more “animals on tap” parks like Chobe or South Luangwa. Mark went out of his way to make sure I had a good in-depth look at the more remote sections of the park which is very beautiful and very under touristed. Instead of rigid to game drives, we spent the whole day doing several of the Park game circuits which I really appreciated. Accommodation at the lodge was not great, but adequate and much better than paying three or four times as much at a luxury lodge to do the same daytime activities. Overall, a great option for the value, seeking Traveler – you won’t regret it.

Zambia Safari Tours & Holidays

Although Zambia has a great safari industry with lots of tours and holidays on offer, it still manages to fly under the radar as a safari country. Unfathomable, given the staggeringly wonderful wildlife experiences it offers safari-goers. If there’s a word to sum up this large, land-locked, off-the-beaten-track place, it is ‘wild’. Nowhere else in southern Africa do you get such an entirely unaffected palette of wild Africa. There’s a sense of the bush that has been lost in more highly urbanized countries – here, the cyclical forces of nature still dominate the animal kingdom.

7 Questions About Zambia Safaris

Alan Murphy

Answered by

Alan murphy.

zambia travel and tour

When is the best time to visit Zambia?

“Zambia trips are best scheduled when it’s easiest to see the wildlife because apart from Victoria Falls, that’s the major attraction. And the best time for wildlife is the Dry season (May to October). At this time of the year, animals tend to hang out near water sources, which makes capturing them on camera easier. In Zambia, the Wet season (November to April) is known as the ‘Emerald season’, named after the infinite shades of green in the luscious bush at this time of year. South Luangwa in particular is mesmerizing during the Emerald season. However, be aware that many accommodations close at this time of the year, and roads can be in very bad shape. June through to August is the best time to see Victoria Falls as they are at their most spectacular in these months.”

Why visit Zambia, what are the major attractions?

“Zambia doesn’t have much diversity when it comes to its attractions. But what it does have is world-class! The country’s premier attraction – which it shares with Zimbabwe – is Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke That Thunders). Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. No Zambian vacation should miss this incredible natural sight. The second major attraction which makes a Zambia tour worthwhile is its wildlife and the setting in which you can see it. Although the animal kingdom is much the same as in other nearby countries, the parks are that much wilder in Zambia. Not only is South Luangwa National Park packed full of wildlife, but it’s also one of the most beautiful parks in Africa. North Luangwa National Park is less developed, but no less well endowed with wildlife and specializes in walking safaris. Lower Zambezi National Park has a dreamy location on the Zambezi River, opposite Mana Pools in Zimbabwe. Canoeing this mighty river is the pastime of choice here; wildlife spotting is particularly productive from a canoe. And no Zambia safari would be complete without a visit to Kafue National Park, one of Africa’s largest parks and especially good for spotting leopard. There are plenty of other wilderness areas to explore too, such as Liuwa Plain National Park, where you can see nature at its finest via a wildlife migration that includes many thousands of grazers, such as wildebeest and zebra.”

What does a Zambia safari cost?

“The sky is the limit for Zambia tours. Although not exclusively top end, most Zambia safaris are pitched towards that end of the market. Generally speaking, the more accessible a park is, the cheaper a Zambia safari will be – the most accessible park in the country is Kafue, which has a major highway running through it with affordable lodges just off the highway. Zambia camping safaris have prices that are competitive with most countries in the region (except perhaps South Africa), and start at around US$150 per day – although you’re more likely to pay upward of US$200 a day. The price of a mid-range tour will be upward of US$300 a day (and can easily climb towards US$1,000 a day, giving you an idea of the price bracket that luxury safaris occupy!), and will see you lounging around in comfy lodges and tented camps. There are some well-established tour operators in Zambia with fine reputations for delivering high-quality, luxury safaris. If you are looking to spoil yourself then a Zambia safari package with one of the many outstanding operators on SafariBookings.com will not disappoint.”

How is the wildlife viewing in Zambia?

“The wildlife viewing in Zambia is spectacular and unique. The parks are in many ways very wild and (apart from areas of South Luangwa) very undeveloped. In some there are no facilities at all. The wildlife you will see on Zambia tours of the country’s parks tends to be equally as spectacular and untamed. Lodges are in the habit of building their accommodation on traditional wildlife tracks, which encourages animals to spend time in and around the camps. Zambia safari holidays in the country’s network of protected areas are really all about wildlife encounters in pristine African bush. Kafue National Park is famed for its leopard sightings, tree-climbing lions, enormous herds of red lechwes, plenty of other antelopes and even wild dogs. What may stick in your mind from a visit to Lower Zambezi National Park are the big-tusked elephants, large buffalo herds, giant crocs lying nonchalantly on the riverbank and the pods of grunting hippos. All are best seen by paddling down the Zambezi in a canoe. South Luangwa is great for most species, including most of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo but not rhino). And Zambia tours of Liuwa Plain National Park reveal a little-known wildlife migration in the Wet season that includes tens of thousands of blue wildebeests, Burchell’s zebras and tsessebes.”

How safe is Zambia for tourists?

“Zambia is very safe for visitors. In particular, the parks and other wildlife areas rarely see any crime. Zambian people are friendly, courteous and full of curiosity, and most would be devastated to think you felt unsafe or unwelcome in their country. The only exception to this is the larger urban areas, such as the capital Lusaka – here the same rules apply as they would in any city. That is, don’t wear or carry flashy expensive items, leave valuables in a hotel safe, don’t walk around at night (catch a taxi instead), and be on a higher level of alert with regard to what is going on around you on the streets. In the parks and reserves, wildlife viewing always entails some risk – after all wild animals are unpredictable. However, if you use a bit of common sense and listen to your guide’s instructions, then you will be fine.”

What type of accommodation can I expect on a Zambia safari?

“In Zambia, the type of accommodation is very dependent on the park you are visiting. In South Luangwa National Park, the country’s best-known park, you can expect all different types of lodging, from campsites and rustic bungalows, through to tented rooms on raised platforms and luxury lodges. In Kafue National Park you can expect a decent smattering of mid-range accommodation just off the highway that splits the park, with more luxurious options buried deeper into the bush. Lower Zambezi is more off-the-beaten track with most visitors flying into bush airstrips. The accommodation reflects the price of the transport required to get here, and is pitched mainly at the top-end or luxury sector of the market. Parks such as Blue Lagoon are restricted in the accommodation they offer with limited, self-catering chalets, while others, such as Lukusuzi, require you to be totally self-sufficient as they are devoid of any facilities at all. So, when planning your Zambia safari holiday, keep in mind the type of accommodation you would prefer, including the level of luxury, and for the most choice and best value, South Luangwa is a good bet.”

What can I expect from a trip to Zambia?

“Zambia safari vacations are all about the wildlife and that – apart from the jaw-dropping Victoria Falls – is the highlight of any visit to the country. Apart from rhino, the rest of the Big Five are plentiful and the three major parks – South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue – all have excellent wildlife densities. For most people, a Zambia tour will usually involve, at least in part, some luxury accommodation in the bush, and there’s no better place to spend up big if you want to spoil yourself. A highlight for many people on a Zambia holiday is doing a walking safari. The guides in Zambia are some of the best in Africa, and a walking safari is a special experience. Lastly, the people of Zambia are well renowned for their warmth and hospitality – interacting with the local people is an integral part of any trip to the country.”

Zambia Tour Reviews

Zambia - tour highlights and travel tips.

A trip to Zambia will open you to untouched wilderness and unparalleled natural beauty, including Victoria Falls.

If when you think of Africa you think of safaris, a trip to Zambia is for you. Home to unparalleled natural beauty, including Victoria Falls (one of the seven natural wonders of the world), Zambia is full of untouched wilderness waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re looking for thrilling adventure (bungee jumping, anyone?) or luxurious camps and safari lodges, Zambia is the alternative traveler’s paradise.

Tour Highlights

  • Take a safari tour through South Luangwa National Park for some of the continent’s best views of big game
  • Swim the rapids from Livingstone Island to exhilarating Devil’s Pool on the cusp of Victoria Falls (if you dare!)
  • Experience the serenity of the Zambezi River with a sunset cruise (or the party-like atmosphere, depending on your tour provider!)
  • Sip on high tea with the zebras at the Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Hotel
  • Seek the ultimate thrill by bungee jumping off of Victoria Falls Bridge

Travel Tips

  • If spotting wildlife is your number one priority for your trip to Zambia, it’s best to visit during the dry season (between May and November). Avoiding the rainy season means safari camps are more likely to be open.
  • Love trying new things? Try snacking on crispy caterpillars or worms - served grilled from street cars across the country.
  • Zambians are conservative and most strictly adhere to the Christian faith. Don’t be surprised to find locals carrying Bibles around. Women should not wear revealing clothing, and same sex relations is not openly discussed.
  • While most wild animals tend to be confined to Zambia’s national parks, do keep an eye out for snakes on your holiday in Zambia. Elephants are also known to roam into town (looking for mangoes) and startle easily.
  • Petty crime (i.e. stealing) is pretty common in Zambia. Be sure to keep an eye on your belongings and, as always, keep your wits about you.

Useful information for planning your vacation in Zambia

The official language of Zambia is English, although more than 72 different languages and dialects are spoken in the country.

The currency of Zambia is the Zambian kwacha (Zw). US dollars are also widely accepted. You’ll find ATMs at the international airports and in larger cities. Major credit cards, such as Visa and MasterCard are accepted at larger hotels, shops and restaurants, but American Express is not. A surcharge of approximately 5% is common when paying by card.

When in Zambia you should try ifisashi (a mix of ground peanuts, tomatoes, onions, and green vegetables), chikanda (a vegetarian loaf), or michopo (roasted meat). You’ll find nshima (a maize, millet, or cassava porridge rolled into balls and eaten with stew) almost everywhere, and near the lakes, kapenta (a small sardine-like fish) and buka buka (Nile perch) dishes are popular.

If you’re feeling braver, ifinkubala (fried caterpillars) are considered a local delicacy. In mid afternoon, vitumbuwa (sweet fritters) are the traditional snack, while Mosi, the local beer, and munkoyo, a non-alcoholic drink made from fermented maize meal, are the most popular drinks.

Tipping 10% in a more upmarket restaurant in Zambia is standard, though it’s not expected at local food stalls. On safari, you should tip your guide at the end of your stay, and there’s usually a communal tipping box to give a tip to camp or lodge staff.

For the latest travel advice for Zambia, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the State Department website .

In Zambia you can get close to nature on walking safaris in quiet parks, take tranquil boats trips on the Zambezi, and experience the sheer power and force of nature at Victoria Falls. A highlight of a trip is visiting quieter parks where wildlife sightings are often yours to enjoy alone.

Walking safaris were pioneered here and these are led by expert guides, giving you a whole new perspective on life in the bush. You can also take traditional 4x4 safaris, night drives, and boat trips to see hippo and crocodiles lurking in the waters, while lion, cheetah, buffalo, and elephant roam the plains.

Zambia is also home to one half of Victoria Falls. You can take a helicopter ride over the thundering falls, jump into a rock pool , or take a sunset cruise on the Zambezi to spot wildlife as you sip a cocktail on board.

In Zambia you can stay in intimate bush camps, luxurious safari lodges, and riverside hotels where you’ll wake to the sound of hippo grunting in the water and the rumbling calls of elephant. Most lodges and camps overlook waterholes or rivers where wildlife can wander past your room at any time of day.

While on safari, you could choose to stay in tented rooms in the heart of the bush, opt for a private, lodge-style retreat, or enjoy an unusual stay in characterful treehouse chalets. You’ll also find a great choice of places to stay at Victoria Falls including an indulgent river lodge overlooking the Zambezi and grand landmark hotels. Or, head to a private estate in the Great Rift Valley to stay in a historic manor house. To get some ideas, browse our collection of places to stay in Zambia .

In Zambia most visitors go to North and South Luangwa national parks, Kafue National Park, and Lower Zambezi National Park. These are the main wildlife areas and offer the best chance of spotting a wide variety of animals.

Each park has its own character and visiting more than one region gives an excellent overview of what Zambia has to offer. Herds of elephant and buffalo as well as basking crocodiles and hippo can be seen in South Luangwa National Park , impala, waterbuck, and zebra are preyed on by lion, leopard, and wild dog in Lower Zambezi National Park , while off-the-beaten-track Kafue National Park promises exploration and discovery in a region that’s little visited by others.

After time spent on safari, you could finish your trip with a visit to Victoria Falls to relax in a riverside hotel while you explore the Zambezi River by boat and visit this natural wonder.

You’re likely to see lion, elephant, zebra, hippo, and warthogs, and have a possibility of encountering leopard, wild dog, and spotted hyena, on safari in Zambia. The diversity of wildlife in Zambia’s national parks is highly impressive and large predators roam the plains in search of grazing cape buffalo, bushbuck, lechwe and kudu, while hippo wallow in rivers, and baboons and vervet monkeys chatter in the trees.

Herds of elephant congregate at waterholes and ramble through the bush, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see spotted hyena and packs of wild dog. In South Luangwa National Park, the large lion prides are a highlight, and elusive leopard are regularly spotted. Zambia’s wilderness areas are also home to more than 700 bird species, many of which are rare or endemic.

It takes around 21 hours to fly from the East Coast of the US to Zambia. From the West Coast, it takes closer to 26 hours.

The time zone in Zambia is UTC+2 hours. Daylight Savings Time is not observed in Zambia.

Flying between parks is the best way of getting around Zambia as the distances are large and the roads poor.

Your doctor can provide you with immunization advice for Zambia, but you should also ensure you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country. You can also check the recommended vaccinations by visiting the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website .

If you’ve been to (even if just in transit) a country with yellow fever in the 30 days prior to your arrival in Zambia, you’ll need a yellow fever vaccination certificate or exemption certificate. Speak to your doctor before booking your trip as yellow fever vaccination is not always advised if you’re over 60.

Malaria is a risk throughout Zambia. Please see your doctor for advice about which antimalarial medication you should take.

Your best defense against malaria is to avoid mosquito bites. Wear loose, long-sleeved clothing, long legs, or skirts, and put an insect repellent with 50% DEET on exposed skin. If your room is not screened use the mosquito net provided, and if you begin to feel unwell and develop a high fever or other symptoms either during or after you return home, seek prompt medical advice, and make sure to mention your travel history.

Check that your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of your arrival in Zambia and has two consecutive blank pages.

Zambia, a rugged and landlocked country in Southern Africa. It’s a country teeming with wildlife, with many parks and safari areas to explore. The great Victoria Falls near Livingstone in Zimbabwe, with a rainbow at dusk

Zambia is home to emerald green national parks with abundant crocodile, elephant and hippo populations.

While the village communities holding centuries of traditional wisdom will stop you in your tracks, it's Mother Nature's 'Smoke that Thunders' (known as Victoria Falls to most) that steals the show as Zambia's standout attraction. Adrenaline-charged sports, markets full of tribal mementos and thrilling safari adventures play worthy supporting roles to Victoria Falls's show-stopping spectacle.

Best time to visit zambia.

August, September and October are some of the best months to spot wildlife, though the days heat up towards the end of this period, especially in the national parks. For cooler weather and greener landscapes, May to August is the time to visit as the weather is cooler but still dry. The wet season generally runs from November to April. At this time many of the national parks are closed and the animals are harder to spot.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Zambia shares borders with Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania ,   Botswana , Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo. While Zambia is one of the most urbanised countries in   Africa , there are still areas of natural beauty to enjoy, with woodlands, savanna, grassland and forested national parks providing a home to mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects.

As the source of the mighty Zambezi River (which flows through five other countries), Zambia can lay claim to one of the world's longest rivers. World Heritage-listed Victoria Falls (which is shared with neighbouring Zimbabwe) is an iconic feature of the Zambezi, inspiring awe and wonder for centuries.

Top 5 adventure activities in Zambia

1. canoeing.

Going on a canoe safari is a must-do adventure when travelling in Zambia. Take advantage of the Zambezi's many channels and estuaries and glide along, spotting animals, admiring the scenery and stopping for breaks along the way.

2. Bungee jumping

Here's an adventure option for travellers with nerves of steel. Bungee jumping is a popular adrenaline sport for tourists visiting Zambia, with the Zambezi providing the perfect 'landing' (or dip) for brave jumpers. While not suitable for everyone - fit, healthy travellers with a lust for pushing their limits will love it.

3. Gorge swinging

With plenty of sheer cliff walls and deep gorges, Zambia is the perfect place to try gorge swinging. Considered a little less intense than bungee jumping, this is a great way to have a memorable time while avoiding the deep panic and fear often induced by bungee jumping.

4. White water rafting

The powerful Zambezi provides low and high rapids suitable for experienced and novice rafters. Bring your energy and fitness, as this adventurous option isn't for passengers - you'll need to paddle hard and hold on tight at times.

5. Scenic flying

Seeing Victoria Falls from a helicopter or micro aircraft may break the budget - but to experience the wonder and majesty of one of the Seven Wonders of the World from the air is surely worth the investment. This may not be one for those with a fear of heights (or flying) but definitely a worthy experience for thrill seekers with a sense of adventure.

American woman killed in elephant attack in Zambia

Johannesburg — An elephant attack that left an American woman dead in Zambia was captured in harrowing cellphone video over the weekend. The clip, shot by tourists in Zambia's Kafue National Park, begins inside an open safari vehicle during a game drive.

In the distance, a large bull elephant can be seen coming toward the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle cannot be seen in the video clip, but someone is heard, saying: "Oh my goodness," before a man says, "it's coming fast."

The vehicle stops and then another voice, presumably the game ranger, tries to ward off the elephant verbally as the large pachyderm hooks its tusks onto the vehicle and rolls it several times.

Family members  confirmed that Gail Mattson, a 79-year-old Minnesotan, was killed in the attack. In the post on Facebook, Rona Wells said her mother had died in "a tragic accident while on her dream adventure."

Mattson, a retired loan officer, was 11 days into a month-long vacation overseas, her family told WCCO, describing her as "adventurous" and "loved by everybody."

Wilderness Safaris, which operates the tour in the Zambian park, said in a statement that it was cooperating with national authorities to investigate the incident and it offered condolences to Mattson's family.

Wilderness said the other tourists traveling with Mattson were also Americans, four of whom sustained minor injuries in the attack.

"Our guides are extremely well trained, but sadly the terrain and vegetation was such that the route became blocked," the company said, explaining that the ranger "could not move the vehicle out of harm's way quickly enough."

Mattson was evacuated to a hospital in South Africa after the incident but succumbed to her injuries.

Kafue National Park is Zambia's largest national park at 8,650 square miles. It's a popular tourist destination as it's home to five of sub-Saharan Africa's iconic big animal species, lions, elephants, leopards, rhinoceros and buffalo.

80-year-old American tourist killed in elephant attack during game drive in Zambia

  • Copy Link copied

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — A bull elephant charged a truck that an 80-year-old American was riding in with other tourists on a game drive in a Zambian national park, flipping over the vehicle and killing her, a safari company said.

The attack injured five others on March 30 in the vast Kafue National Park , which covers 22,400 square kilometers (8,600 square miles) and is one of Africa’s largest animal reserves.

According to the safari company Wilderness, the “aggressive” bull elephant unexpectedly charged at the truck, which was carrying six guests and a guide on a morning excursion through wild areas.

It wasn’t clear what upset the bull. But in a video widely circulated online, the pachyderm is seen menacingly charging through the bushy terrain toward the tourists’ vehicle. A man is heard shouting “hey hey hey,” in apparent but futile efforts to scare it away. It reaches the truck and flips it over using its trunk.

Another female tourist was seriously injured and flown by helicopter to South Africa for treatment while the rest were treated for minor injuries, the company said.

“This is a devastating incident for everyone involved and we are doing our best to support the family and all affected,” Tarryn Gibson, the safari company’s head of communications told The Associated Press on Thursday. Gibson did not identify the tourist who was killed, and said her family wished for privacy. The company also asked people to not share the video of the attack online.

FILE - This photo provided by the National Park Service shows cougar known as P-81. If hikers, bikers, campers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts haven't encountered a mountain lion while in the California wilderness, they likely know somebody who has. The big cats that can weigh more than 150 pounds (68 kg) inhabit diverse habitats across the state where people live and recreate, including inland forests, coastal chaparral, foothills and mountains. (National Park Service via AP)

While many wildlife parks in southern Africa teem with dangerous animals like elephants and lions, such incidents are rare, although they sometimes do occur with fatal consequences due to the unpredictability of wild animals.

Keith Vincent, chief executive officer of the safari company, said rough terrain minimized chances of an escape.

“Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough” he said.
