Explore Zion National Park on our Jeep Tours!

Z ion National Park contains some of earth’s most spectacular scenery, yet the vast majority of its 3 million annual visitors will never experience Zion beyond a few feet of the pavement. Those who do know that nature’s best-kept secrets are reserved for those who venture beyond the well-worn trail.

Our tours in Zion make it easy to experience many of southern Utah’s hidden treasures. We take the road less traveled to show you places that most visitors see only in photographs, including stunning panoramas and breathtaking overlooks that have remained unchanged for a million years. You might see thousand-year-old Native American rock art, an authentic ghost town that became a Hollywood favorite, and/or wildlife that doesn’t behave like it lives in a zoo. Choose from our safari, or take a Private Jeep Tour  to wherever you want to go.

The Mesa Vista safari departs from Balcony One Restaurant in Virgin, UT. The  2.5-hour “Mesa Vista” Safari  follows North Creek toward the Kolob Terrace, then explores Smith Mesa. This area provides spectacular panoramas which stretch from West Temple to the Kolob Fingers at the northern end of the park.

The Mesa Vista jeep tour with Kevin was excellent. It was a small group and Kevin narrated the entire tour. We made many stops along the way for views and interesting places. Kevin was friendly and provided great information about the natural aspects of the Mesa and surrounding areas and the history of the area. We highly recommend this to her.

I found this company on TripAdvisor and am very happy I booked with them. The driver (I think his name was Adam, but I could be wrong) was extremely knowledgeable about the region, geography and history of the area. We drove to the top of a mesa and the views were just amazing. This tour is definitely worth taking

What a terrific adventure. We didn't think anything could top Zion but getting out on the high mesas was an amazing experience. Our guide, Kevin, was super knowledgeable on the flora, fauna, geology, and history of the area. Totally enjoyed the three hour trip. (Even saw a rattlesnake).

This was a beautiful scenic desert tour without the crowds of Zion National Park. Although we didn’t spot a mountain lion or coyote, there were many enjoyable little critters , views of far away mountains in Arizona, and a kind, knowledgeable tour guide. Kevin was not only kind and accommodating, but he enjoyed talking about the land and its people.

Let me start by saying Kevin is amazing! He made it feel like the entire group of us were his old friends. My wife and I loved the entire experience from the friendly greeting to the excellent narration and the amazing views along the entire tour. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the Zion area. We greatly enjoyed this tour because it was personable and no long lines or crowds. We rode in the white ford truck and it was comfortable. Also Kevin had lots of cold waters for us and offered to take photos at every stop. Zion Jeep Tours is a must do when you visit the area! P.S. don’t forget to ask Kevin about Zoey.

We toured with Zion Jeep Tours on 7/13/2023, our guide was Kevin and he could not have been more perfect. We were picked up on time and given several options of what we'd like to see. Kevin is intimately familiar with the area, and was able to spotlight points of interest and add interesting insights that we would never have known otherwise. I would highly recommend hiring Zion Jeep Tours and Kevin if you are interested in seeing parts of Zion National Park that most others don't get to see.

5 of the best Zion National Park ATV & Jeep Tours

Accessing the wildest corners of Utah’s Zion National Park is possible on a guided Jeep tour of this beautiful region. Here are five of the best options.

zion national park jeep tours

(Photo: Viator.com)

Slot canyons, grand sweeping vistas, mountains and valleys are just some of the reasons to visit this revered national park in southern Utah. With the main national park consisting of a dead-end road that offers little scope for off-roading, the majority of Zion’s Jeep and ATV tours depart from Orderville in East Zion, although a few do depart from Springdale (tours mostly operate outside of the National Park perimeter). Here are our top five based on factors such as duration, value for money, and the reviews of previous guests.

Zion Sunset Jeep Tour

One of the best value Jeep tours around Zion is this 90-minute jaunt to catch the sunset over the broad plateaus from a perfect, remote viewpoint. Your driver will provide blankets and snacks for the cooler weather as you’re driven out to one of the highest vantage points in the area. Look out over Zion National Park and beyond as the setting sun paints this remarkable landscape a variety of colors. This tour is available daily, but as with most tours on this list, is often unavailable during the winter months. From $69 per person.

East Zion Slot Canyon and UTV Tour

zion national park jeep tours

(Photo: Getyourguide.com)

Take an off-road UTV, which is customized to deal with the unique landscape of Zion, in search of hard-to-reach slot canyons located along dirt tracks. You’ll have to walk the rest of the way to reach the captivating, narrow canyons carved out by flash floods. You’ll also learn about local Native American history and about the geographical process that make these special landforms. A little light scrambling is required, so this tour is best for those with hiking boots and decent fitness levels. The tour lasts two hours and runs three or four times daily. From $99 per person.

Bushy Cove Jeep Adventure in East Zion

The dirt track to Bushy Cove is dotted with the old, decaying cabins of miners and breathtaking views of Zion National Park’s landmarks, including Checkerboard Mesa and West Temple. While Zion has one main canyon, there are numerous small, lesser-known canyons that you’ll explore on this 90-minute tour. On the off-road Elevator Trail there’s even a good chance to spot wildlife, including elk and wild turkey. On rare occasions, lucky explorers may even see a black bear or mountain lion. From $99 per person.

East Zion UTV Slot Canyon Tour

One of the most popular trips near Zion National Park is this UTV tour to the slot canyons of Upper Red Cave and Lower Red Cave. The smaller group on this tour (maximum 15 people) means you’ll get a good opportunity to frame the best shots of this eminently photogenic area, with the unusual curves and striations of the rock making for a memorable experience. Your guide will also point out local flora and fauna along the way. Tours depart in the mid-afternoon from Mon-Sat and run right through the year. From $104 per person.

zion national park jeep tours

Zion Jeep Premium Afternoon Tour

This premium package Jeep tour offers the ultimate off-road experience of Zion National Park. Departing from the main resort town of Springdale, you’ll spend three hours exploring the land around Zion, learning how to eat the fruit of the prickly pear cactus, spotting snakes and lizards, and learning all about the local Native American history along the way. There will also be plenty of stunning views and stops in peaceful locales along the 30-mile route, so don’t forget to bring along a camera. From $132 per person.

Zion Jeep Tours

Amazing jeep tours and a unique experience.

zion national park jeep tours

We have taken hundreds of tourists and visitors from all over the world and provided them with the most unforgettable experiences that they will continue to talk about with friends for years to come. Our office is based in Springdale which is adjacent to Zion National Park. This allows us to provide packages that provide a unique experience for every traveler. We customize packages based on the customer’s needs and focus on providing a complete and highly-professional service during the entire trip.

Go on a tour where visitors can take in the scenery with the help of a professional guide. Our guides are hardcore nature enthusiasts and enjoy the outdoors. They also provide interesting information on wildlife, plant life, geology, and human history to help visitors learn more about the beauty that surrounds Zion National Park.

Here are five once-in-a-lifetime tours we offer:

Outback safari.

Get ready to enter the scenic back country of Zion National Park with a 2-hour morning tour of Grafton and Gooseberry Mesa. We know that most visitors do not like big crowds and packing into cramped buses. This is why we provide an exciting Safari 4x4 vehicle which gets visitors directly to the Grafton ghost town site which is a famous attraction. Once there, our guides will provide a historical overview of this location which explains the struggle settlers experienced when they first arrived in Southern Utah.

From Grafton, the tour continues by climbing up to the historic Gooseberry Mesa trail. Visitors get a chance to take selfies and group photos while enjoying panoramic views, rainbow-colored rock formations, and watching wildlife in their natural habitats. This tour leaves at 9:45 AM and runs from March through October.

Mesa Vista Safari

This is an afternoon trip for 3 hours which takes visitors on a tour of Smith Mesa and Kolob Terrace. Make sure to bring a camera because this is one of the most scenic and popular tour climbs we offer. Sit back as we head to the high back country of Zion National Park.

Guests traverse into Hurricane Mesa or Smith Mesa and get a chance to view a stunning array of colors and panoramic scenery along Zion’s vast stretch of colored rock. There is also a stop at the mesa’s edge and when looking east, visitors will see 2500 foot cliffs that showcase an amazing sunset that blends a stunning array of colors in purples, oranges, and pinks.

During this trip, guests can ask the driver to stop at any time to take photos. They also make sure to stop at all of the popular photo-op spots so that tour participants can take a few photos to cherish the memory. These stops also include catching several images of the wildlife as well as a chance to view Native American wall paintings.

Grand Canyon Private

The Grand Canyon gets more than 5 million visitors a year and only a few people get to experience our service: an experience to see one of the world’s greatest wonders without the typical crowds and distractions. Our package members are not standing around on sidewalks and hanging around gift shops. Instead, you get straight into the action and experience raw mother nature by visiting one of the most remote and most beautiful locations in the United States.

Known as the Arizona Strip, this is a section of the Grand Canyon called “Tuweep”. It is a rugged and remote region of Arizona that sits on the border of Southern Utah. We take you straight to the highlight of the trip which is a 3000-foot precipice to the Colorado River. This is probably one of the most talked about trips as visitors experience views that are absolutely amazing. This trip takes 8-9 hours and accommodates groups of up to 4 people.

Private Jeep Tour

Experience a rugged off-road adventure in one of our jeeps then take to the skies for a getaway on one of our helicopter tours. Create lifelong memories that can all be included in a one-day package. We provide doorstep pickup and delivery to areas like the Zion Outback, Grafton ghost town, and many other areas that provide extraordinary views of Zion National Park and the surrounding areas.

Your helicopter will take you on a 360 air tour that will allow you to create a lifetime of memories through the experience. There will be plenty of chances to take some amazing photos as package members take to the sky while riding in one of the most comfortable air tours possible.

Jeep/Helicopter Combo

We can provide a customized package that can accommodate up to 7 people to explore the Mesa Vista or Outback sections of Zion. We can even provide a schedule that will combine both sections. Visitors also have the option to explore a variety of other backroads in areas surrounding Springdale and Zion National Park.

We depart from the front entrance of the Majestic View Lodge which is next to our Springdale office. This allows us to provide tour times that are very convenient for visitors. We also provide free parking at our Springdale office for all jeep tours. There are other park options such as riding a bike or taking public transportation to get to areas of the park.

Although these options are good to prevent traffic congestion and erosion of the park, our private jeep tour solution is the most convenient and personalized. It really helps to avoid the crowds during the peak season and the ride is smooth and comfortable.

In addition, the guides are what make our 3-hour jeep tours a 5-star experience because they provide storytelling and create a few laughs. During every jeep tour trip, they will offer in-depth knowledge on the sites, plant and animal life, geology, and more.

Fantastic Tours, Amazing Views

Zion Jeep Tours is a company visitors to Zion National Park can rely on to enjoy a hassle-free vacation to provide an excellent, customized service and take visitors to the most exciting and amazing attractions. Our tours are designed to provide a fantastic, unforgettable experience that most people only get to dream about.

The reservoir is a popular place for water activities such as boating, fishing, and diving. The 20,000-acre park is also home to 15,000 acres of the red sand dunes of Sand Mountain.

These dunes are a great spot to ride an off-highway vehicle. In fact, it’s one of the most popular parks in the Utah State Park system. Thousands of visitors flock there each year to camp, post up an RV, ride horses, ride bikes, and hike.

Sand Hollow Park is easily accessible if you have a rental car, as it’s only 15 miles east of the town of St George, and just 34 miles from Zion National Park.

11. Belly of the Dragon

If you’re looking for fun activities near Zion and Bryce National Park, the Belly of the Dragon hike is a must.

This short half-mile hike through a manmade tunnel is a favorite among visitors and locals alike. This family-friendly trail is just 20 miles east of Zion National Park, and a short detour if you’re on the way to Bryce Canyon National Park.

Originally created as a water culvert under Highway 89, is now a beautiful rippling tunnel that is one of the most popular hiking trails.

The trail has no elevation gain, but the floor of the tunnel is rocky and uneven, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a flashlight to see in front of you.

Getting there from Kanab or Carmel Junction is simple, but does require driving down a short dirt road to a small parking area.

12. Kanab Sand Caves/Moqui Caverns

When crafting your itinerary of things to do around Zion National Park, the Kanab Sand Caves/Moqui Caverns is a must.

Not only are they some of the best things to do around Zion, but visiting it is just a short 20-minute detour if you’re on the way to Bryce National Park.

These man-made caves were once used to harvest sand for glass production in the 1970s. Now, they make the perfect family-friendly adventure from Kanab or Carmel Junction.

Getting up to the caves is relatively easy, with a short 0.25-mile hike up a rock wall with little elevation gain. The total hike is just 0.5 miles round-trip, so as long as you have comfortable hiking shoes with great traction, you won’t have any issues.

Pro tip: Visit an hour before the sun sets for the ultimate glow that is perfect for a photo opportunity!

13. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

If you’re looking to visit other parks near Zion National Park, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park won’t disappoint.

Formed by Navajo sandstone during the Middle Jurassic period, this living sea of reddish-pinkish sand evolves annually, moving as much as 50 feet per year. Due to changing winds known as the Venturi effect, the landscape rarely stays the same for long!

Even at 6,000 feet of elevation, the park is also home to an array of unique wildlife . This includes the Coral Pink Tiger Beetle and salamanders and toads that live in ponds created by melting snow.

If you’re looking for a thrill, take to the dunes in an ATV on your own or as part of a guided tour. Ninety percent of the dunes are designated areas for ATV riding, while the entire park is open to those who prefer to hike or play in the sand.

14. Sand Dune Arch

For an adventurous yet easy hike, Sand Dune Arch is one of the best things to do around Zion. You’ll hike a short distance through deep sand with no elevation gain to discover a hidden arch between towering sandstone walls.

The total round-trip hike is just 0.4 miles, though you can choose to continue on to explore Broken Arch, which lengthens it to a 2-mile loop trail returning the same way.

15. Red Canyon/Peekaboo Slot Canyon

Perhaps more widely known as “Peekaboo Slot Canyon,” Red Canyon is one of Southern Utah’s most famous slot canyons. Just a few miles north of the town of Kanab, Red Canyon is a lot less crowded than the nearby Narrows in Zion National Park but is no less stunning.

The most appealing aspect of this slot canyon is that once there, you can access it without repelling into it. It’s a family-friendly adventure of swirling sandstone walls that almost anyone can enjoy.

However, it’s important to note that you will need a vehicle with 4-Wheel Drive to get up to the slot canyon itself. If not, you’ll have to hike the 4 miles of deep sand up to the entrance.

If you don’t have a 4×4 vehicle and still want to visit the slot canyon, you can take a tour to the canyon easily.

16. Snow Canyon State Park

This one is for all the outdoor enthusiasts! If you’re searching for epic landscapes and things to see near Zion National Park, Snow Canyon State Park is sure to wow you.

This 10,000-year-old, 7,400-acre scenic park finds a home amid lava flows and soaring, colorful sandstone cliffs. The remote desert environment boasts majestic views of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve and is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.

Ranging in elevation from 3,100 to 4,100 feet, it’s a popular spot to hike, view wildlife, camp, attend ranger talks, or practice nature photography.

In fact, there are more than 38 miles of hiking trails –  three miles of which are paved for walking and biking, and more than 15 miles that exist for equestrians.

17. Toquerville Falls

To experience one of the best outdoor activities near Zion National Park, head to Toquerville Falls. This desert oasis can only be reached by a vehicle with 4WD such as a truck, SUV, or off-road vehicle.

While parts of the journey there might be a bit rough, it’s well worth it! First, the views along the route to the falls are simply stunning . Once you arrive at the falls themselves, you’ll quickly discover they are peaceful and clean – perfect for swimming or admiring.

To get there, it’s best to head north on I-15 from St. George. The total drive is about 30 miles but takes you directly to a parking spot a short distance from the falls.

18. Bryce Canyon National Park

One of the most popular attractions near Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park is a sight to behold. Famous for the largest collection of hoodoos in the world, it’s one of the most popular national parks in the U.S.

In addition to the hoodoos, it’s also known for horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters, starry night skies, and otherworldly landscapes . The landscapes are perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of the park: three different zones span the park, including the fir forest, Ponderosa Pine forest, and juniper forest environments.

Millions of tourists visit the park each year to hike, camp, attend the annual Prairie Dog Festival, and participate in educational nature or ranger programs.

Due to its popularity, if you want to avoid the crowds at Bryce, visit during a shoulder season in fall or spring. The best months for a shoulder season trip are mid-October to late November, and early March to late April.

19. Kanab Dinosaur Tracks

Looking for fun things to do outside of Zion National Park that the kiddos will love, too?

The Kanab Dinosaur Tracks Trail is truly out of this world. Just three miles from Kanab, a short but steep 0.7-mile hike leads up to a plateau with stunning views of the city of Kanab below… but that’s not all. Along the way, be sure to look down.

You’ll notice a series of several dinosaur footprints from nearly 185 million years ago. Talk about history!

It’s important to note that the trail is mostly unmaintained, with loose dirt and small stones along the way. You’ll want to give yourself extra time to hike it and wear shoes or hiking boots with plenty of traction.

The parking at the trailhead is free but can be a bit difficult to locate. Look for a brown porta-potty and you’ll also locate the start of the trail.

20. Red Cliffs National Conservation Area

If it’s a hiking adventure you’re seeking, The Red Cliffs National Conservation Area in southwest Utah is where you’ll find just that. With 45,600 acres of ecologically diverse landscapes , Red Cliffs mark the meeting point of the Mojave Desert, Colorado Plateau, and Great Basin.

More than 130 miles of trails support horseback riding, hiking, walking, and biking throughout the park.

Not only is this area great for hiking, but it’s also prime for wildlife spotting , too. The Red Cliffs National Conservation Area is home to a number of threatened species including the Mojave Desert tortoise, endangered native fish, and migratory birds.

Keep your eyes peeled as you explore the landscape – there are remnants of the Jurassic era everywhere from dinosaur tracks and trackways, to bone beds, plant fossils, and petrified wood.

21. Red Reef Trail

Hiking is one of the best things to do near Zion National Park, and The Red Reef Trail in Reef National Park is definitely known for hiking.

The first trail option is a 1.5-mile out-and-back route that begins at the lower level and continues up to the pools. The second is the full 5.9-mile trail that lies along the Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness trail.

The latter is more challenging, but if it’s a challenge you’re looking for, you’ll find it. While this trail is accessible and beautiful year-round, it’s best to hike it in the spring when rainfall is the heaviest.

This way, you can see the pools in all of their glory. You can access the park and trail with a national park pass, or by paying $5 for a day pass.

22. Water Canyon Trail

What if we told you that water drainage was one of the most stunning hikes in Southern Utah? It’s true! The Water Canyon trail is a popular trail that is a narrow-like ravine with an active stream , surrounded by towering slot canyon walls.

These narrows are short but beautiful — interrupted by wider sections, small waterfalls, and sections where the water flows at a faster pace.

In total, the trail is 3.3. miles round trip and takes up to two hours to complete. During seasons of high rainfall, water flow can be dangerous, so avoid taking to the trail during storms to avoid flash floods.

23. Kanarra Creek Trail

One of the best outdoorsy things near Zion National Park you can enjoy is the Kanarra Creek slot canyon trail. It’s an extremely photogenic and moderate hike just outside the Kolob Canyons of Zion National Park, just east of the town of Kanarraville.

Accessing the trail is easy. From the center of town, drive or walk four blocks east where you will find a parking lot. You will need advanced reservations to hike this trail, so be sure to get those before heading to the trail.

The 3.5-mile trail can be customized to be as easy or as challenging as you wan t. The reason for this is the series of waterfalls you will likely encounter along the way.

The section of the trail leading to the first waterfall is easy. After that, you’ll need to rely on ropes, ladders, and tree limbs to ascend to the other levels of the canyon. It’s best to stick to dry trails where possible, but if you insist on continuing up the canyon, check the ropes and tree limbs for breakage or damage.

24. Zion Human History Museum

If you’re looking for other things to do near Zion National Park that don’t involve the outdoors, explore The Zion Human History Museum.

Here, you’ll find interesting exhibits, artifacts, and archival materials from the park that explain the role water has played in the park. You’ll learn how water has crafted the current landscapes and the importance of the element for both travelers and settlers.

Best Times To Visit

Zion National Park welcomes visitors all year round, but the best times to visit largely depend on the activities you plan to undertake. For hiking, spring and fall are ideal as the weather is typically mild and trails are less crowded. Summer is the busiest season with soaring temperatures, making hiking strenuous, but it’s perfect for stargazing. Winter, on the other hand, is serene with fewer visitors and occasional snowfall, best suited for those seeking tranquility. Always remember to check weather updates and park advisories before planning your trip, as sudden weather changes can influence trail and road accessibility.

Essential Camping Gear

Whether you’re a seasoned camper or going out for your first time, the right gear is crucial for a smooth camping experience. First and foremost, packing the appropriate wardrobe for the season you’re visiting in is absolutely essential. Also make sure to pack a sturdy, weather-resistant tent suitable for the expected conditions. A comfortable sleeping bag rated for the season and a sleeping pad for insulation and comfort are also must-haves. Don’t forget a reliable headlamp for navigating in the dark and a multi-tool for various camping tasks. Depending on your campsite location and the park’s fire regulations, a portable stove might also be a valuable addition to your packing list. Lastly, always carry a first-aid kit for emergencies and a map and compass for navigation. Remember, packing smart not only ensures your comfort but also your safety.

Safety Tips

Camping in Zion National Park is a thrilling experience, but the environment demands respect and caution. Always stay on designated trails to protect both the environment and your personal safety. Keep a safe distance from wildlife, refraining from feeding them as it disrupts their natural foraging habits. Stay hydrated, especially during summer, and carry sufficient water as sources in the park may not be reliable. Always inform someone of your camping plans and estimated return time. And remember, weather can change rapidly. Regularly check weather forecasts and heed park advisories.

Must-See Attractions and Activities

Zion National Park boasts numerous striking attractions and activities to satisfy every adventurer. The Narrows, the most popular hike in the park, takes you through the narrowest section of Zion Canyon. Another must-visit is Angels Landing, offering breathtaking panoramic views, but it’s recommended for experienced hikers due to its challenging nature. For a tranquil encounter, visit the Emerald Pools, a set of sparkling pools cascading from the cliffs. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore Kolob Canyons, Zion’s lesser-visited area, which offers a peaceful retreat from the park’s busier spots. Whether you’re into rigorous hiking, wildlife watching, or simply immersing in nature’s serenity, Zion National Park caters to all. Not only that but camping at Zion Ponderosa’s campgrounds gives you access to incredible outdoor activities and experiences not offered anywhere else.

Leave No Trace Principle

The Leave No Trace principle is pivotal to preserving Zion National Park’s pristine ecosystems. Campers are urged to minimize their impact by carrying out all trash, staying on established paths, respecting wildlife and plants, and leaving natural and cultural features as they are for future generations to appreciate.

Zion Ponderosa Offers An Unbeatable Camping Experience

Zion National Park is a haven for campers all over the world. From its undeniably majestic landscapes to the invigorating outdoor activities it offers, the Park promises an unforgettable camping experience.
