Museum presents 'Big Bird visits Cloudcroft on his way to Moscow'

Free lecture tells local cold war tale.

Las Cruces Railroad Museum

LAS CRUCES - Dave Dooling, education director of the Alamogordo Space Museum, will present “Big Bird Visits Cloudcroft on His Way to Moscow," a brown bag lecture at the Las Cruces Railroad Museum at noon on Aug. 14.

This "Big Bird," it turns out, was a legendary spy.

Many of the best spies of the Cold War stopped in Cloudcroft to get their eyes checked before taking a tour of the Soviet Union. The spy known as “Big Bird” was nicknamed for the KH-9 Hexagon spy satellite.

Recently released documents show that this and earlier spy satellites passed through Cloudcroft for alignment tests on their way to photograph the USSR’s military secrets.

Big Bird also made a hide-in-plain-sight appearance aboard the Space Shuttle in 1984 as well as helping the Hubble Space Telescope.

Dooling, a veteran space writer who covered early Space Shuttle missions, stumbled onto this obscure bit of New Mexico’s history as he was developing summer camp programs.

The museum is at 351 N. Mesilla St., and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For information, visit  http://las-cruces.org/museums  or call 575-528-3444.

Coroner releases identity of man shot and killed by Lexington police

T he Fayette County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of the man who was shot and killed by Lexington police officers Tuesday.

Joseph Carrico, 47, of Lexington, was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. The coroner’s office said he was shot multiple times but did not say how many gunshot wounds specifically he suffered.

Carrico underwent a forensic autopsy on Tuesday in Frankfort, according to the coroner’s office.

The shooting happened around 12:24 a.m. on the 200 block of Regency Point Path off Nicholasville Road. The Lexington Police Department previously said three officers were responding to a report of a disorder with a weapon and when they arrived they reported they saw Carrico armed with a gun.

Shots were fired but no details were released about who fired the shots. Lexington police said no officers were shot.

The Kentucky State Police’s Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation into the shooting, as is typical when law enforcement officers are involved in shootings. More information is expected to be released after facts are gathered and vital witnesses are interviewed.

Texas A&M Aggies A Finalist For Five-Star Tackle Michael Fasusi

The Aggies are in prime position for one of the top offensive tackles in the country.

  • Author: Matt Galatzan

The Texas A&M Aggies are beginning to ramp up the recruiting under new head coach Mike Elko, and one of the biggest targets in that effort is five-star Lewisville (TX) offensive tackle Michael Fasusi.

And as of Monday, it appears that the Aggies are in extremely good shape for the 6-foot-4 pass blocker, making the list for his top-7 finalists alongside a host of other elite programs.

The Aggies made the list alongside the Texas Longhorns, Oregon Ducks, USC Trojans, Oklahoma Sooners, Georgia Bulldogs and Missouri Tigers.

Fasusi's announcement comes off of a recent weekend visit to College Station, which was his second since January. Off the heels of that January visit, Fasusi revealed what it is about the Aggies and Mike Elko that piqued his interest.

"(Mike Elko) is really going to turn the program around and I’m down for that," Fasusi said. "I believe what he said about the program. (The defensive line coach) wants to push me as hard as I can push myself. I’ve never heard that before. We had a long meeting and he proved himself. They really want me.”

Fasusi also has another trip to Aggieland planned for June.

As it stands, Fasusi ranks as the No. 19 player in the nation, No. five offensive tackle and No. six player in the state of Texas, per the On3 Industry Ranking. His highest marks come from ESPN and Rivals.com, who both have him ranked as the No. 3 offensive tackle in the nation.

Per On3's Recruiting Prediciton Machine, Texas is seen as the favorite at 88.5 percent.
