The Mr. Oizo remix of "Don't Be Light" is distinguished by Kraftwerkian, minimalist electro flavoring. On-U Sound's progressive dub visionary Adrian Sherwood takes "How Does it Make You Feel" to Jamaica, adding roots-reggae beats and Augustus Pablo-like melodica riffs, adding a new dimension to the robotic Barry White orientation of the original song. By the time we arrive at Jack Lahana's remix of the pulsing "People in the City," with its urgently lascivious hip-hop touches, Air's tunes have been fully transformed. The bonus live video track of the same tune provides a good opportunity to see how Air pulls of their complex arrangements in a performance setting, not to mention a chance to gawk at all their vintage gear.

In 1998, the French electronic duo released MOON SAFARI, the album that put them on the map. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this acclaimed LP, Rhino is doing something very special: we’re putting out a new phosphorescent vinyl version of the album.

That’s right: the vinyl glows in the dark. 

If you don’t already know Air, then it’s time you fixed that. After all, how many bands can score comparisons to everyone from ELO to Garbage to Everything but the Girl? When Moon Safari was initially released, it secured high marks from tons of critics, making the year-end best-of lists for Melody Maker, Mojo, NME, and Spin, and when Rolling Stone compiled its list of the top 100 albums of the ‘90s, it was in the mix there as well.

And now it glows in the dark, too? Let’s just go ahead and say it: at this point, it’s clearly one of the best albums ever.

Carbon Removal Process

Carbon removal is the process of capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and then storing it.

For example, if a truck or a plane that delivers your shipment releases 1 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, and you are subscribed to the Planet app, then Shopify ensures that 1kg of CO2 is also sucked from the atmosphere and stored away using solutions and technologies in Shopify Sustainability Fund.

There is a fast-growing and evolving sector with many carbon removal technologies in different stages of development. These technologies include nature-based solutions, such as reforestation and soil carbon sequestration and more high-tech solutions, such as direct air capture and mineralization.

How Shipping Emissions Are Calculated

The Planet app combines data from our store with industry data and peer-reviewed models to estimate how much CO2 your shipments release into the environment. Because the Planet app makes sure that CO2 shipping emissions are removed entirely, all values that are used in the data models are rounded up.

Review the following table to learn more about the which data is used to determine shipping emissions:

To estimate your emissions, the Planet app uses order tracking data associated with the tracking number assigned to the shipment. If the tracking number isn’t available or the shipping carrier isn’t supported, then the Planet app multiplies the estimated emissions by an uncertainty factor of 1.5. The uncertainty factor helps make sure that all your emissions are removed. If any data is inconsistent or missing, then the Planet app uses a reasonable maximum value instead.

For example, suppose that you ship a package from Boston to New York. The straight-line distance is 305.94 km, but the shortest road route is around 350 km. If tracking data is available, then the Planet app uses the exact distance traveled.

However, if no tracking data is provided, then 305.94 km is used in the base calculation, and the resulting emissions would be multiplied by 1.5. This calculation accounts for variations in the route, such as distances traveled from post offices and distribution centers, and the route taken by the courier to deliver the package to your customer's door.

Considerations for using the Planet app

Review the following considerations for the Carbon Neutral Shipping Planet app:

• The models and estimates aren’t exact, but the Planet app overestimates your emissions to make sure that they’re entirely removed. 
• The Planet app removes only carbon (CO2) emissions that account for 95% of the climate impact from burning fossil fuels for transportation. Other emissions such as CH4, N2O, and GHG aren’t removed.
• Orders that are shipped by sea transportation (we do not ship any orders by sea) don't generate the data required to accurately calculate emissions. Instead, industry-accepted alternative methods are used to calculate emissions.
• The Planet app currently focuses on addressing emissions from shipping-related transportation.

Although electronica had its fair share of chillout classics prior to the debut of Air, the lion’s share was either stark techno (Warp) or sample-laden trip-hop (Mo’ Wax). But while Air had certainly bought records and gear based on the artists that had influenced them, they didn’t just regurgitate (or sample) them; they learned from them, digesting their lessons in a way that gave them new paths to follow. They were musicians in a producer’s world, and while no one could ever accuse their music of being danceable, it delivered the emotional power of great dance music even while pushing the barriers of what “electronica” could or should sound like. (Never again would Saint Etienne be the only band of a certain age to reveal their fondness for Burt Bacharach.) The Modulor EP had displayed astonishing powers of mood and texture, but it was Air’s full-length debut, Moon Safari, that proved they could also write accessible pop songs like “Sexy Boy” and “Kelly Watch the Stars.” But it wasn’t all pop. The opener, “La Femme d’Argent,” was an otherworldly beginning, with a slinky bassline evoking Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson and a slow glide through seven minutes of growing bliss (plus a wonderful keyboard solo). The vocoderized “Remember” relaunched a wave of robot pop that hadn’t been heard in almost 20 years, and the solos for harmonica and French horn on “Ce Matin La” made the Bacharach comparisons direct. Unlike most electronica producers, Air had musical ideas that stretched beyond samplers or keyboards, and Moon Safari found those ideas wrapped up in the music that was engaging, warm, and irresistible.

Air announce 25th anniversary vinyl reissue of ‘Moon Safari’

It follows a 20th anniversary celebration of the duo's ’10 000Hz Legend’ LP in 2021

Air have announced a 25th anniversary vinyl reissue of their classic debut album ‘Moon Safari’.

The French duo – comprised of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel – released their debut album in 1998.

After celebrating 20 years of its 2001 follow-up ’10 000Hz Legend’ with a reissue in 2021, ‘Moon Safari’ will now be reissued on vinyl via Vinyl Me Please to celebrate its 25th birthday.

The reissue will land on February 1 and be pressed on an exclusive 180gram “Sea of Tranquility” coloured vinyl.

It will feature lacquers cut by Marie Pieprrzownik alongside a Listening Notes article by Sophie Frances Kemp and an art print from Mike Mills.

The liner notes for the reissue say of the album: “It feels like a dream sequence. One moment you’re walking through a room drenched in pink light while dressed in a tuxedo, the next you’re diving into the neighbour’s pool butt-naked with your high school crush.

“It’s a mood you want to live inside of forever. It’s a revelation. It’s conversation pit music for a better future.”

Air last studio effort,  ‘Le Voyage Dans La Lune’ , came out in 2012.

Asked by  NME in 2019 whether there would be another record, the band’s Nicolas Godin said that he was concerned about ruining the band’s “magic” by releasing a “substandard album”.

“If we’re able to find that magic, we’ll go into the studio,” he continued. “But if not, we’ll move aside and let other people make those magic records.”

The French duo are reissuing their iconic debut.

Air will be celebrating 25 years of Moon Safari with a special vinyl reissue this February.

The 1998 debut of the French electronic duo will be available only through VinylMePlease from February 1.

This 25th-anniversary edition is available on “Sea of Tranquility” coloured vinyl and comes with listening notes by writer Sophie Frances Kemp and an art print by Mike Mills.

Air / Moon Safari glow-in-the-dark vinyl

Amazon in the US have a pre-order listing for a ‘Phosphorescent/Glow In The Dark’ vinyl edition of French band Air ‘s debut album  Moon Safari . The release coincides with the 20th anniversary of the 1998 album which delivered three top 30 UK hits in the form of Sexy Boy , Kelly Watch The Stars and All I Need .

It’s not clear at this point if this vinyl is a one-off or whether a wider 20th anniversary reissue campaign is imminent. Either way, this record is great value at only $15 , which equates to around £19  sent to the UK with import duty and (cheapest) shipping included. Even if this title appears in the Britain, is it going to be cheaper than that?

This  ‘Phosphorescent/Glow In The Dark’ vinyl edition of Moon Safari will be released on 6 April 2018.

Re-released on 180-gram vinyl with original artwork, is debut studio album from AIR ‘Moon Safari’, first released in 1998.

Moon Safari is the acclaimed full-length debut album from French postmodern electro duo Air – acronym for “Amour, Imagination, Rêve” (love, imagination, dream) – comprised of sound auteurs Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel. The pair originally recorded Moon Safari’s basic tracks on a Fostex D80 in Saint-Nom and then flushed the songs out in Gang Studios in Paris while the album’s strings were arranged by music legend David Whitaker at Abbey Road in London. Highlighted by lush arrangements and the stylistic electronic singles “Sexy Boy” and “Kelly Watch the Stars,” Moon Safari’s ethereal space-pop not only put Air on the musical map, but it distinguished the duo as gifted musicians and songwriters who only sounded like producers.
