Abby Travel Swords

I would highly recommend booking your family holidays with Abbey Travel Swords. I have booked two holidays so far with Jacynta who was so helpful answering my endless amount of questions. I was finding it harder to pick the right holiday for our family now that our children are getting older so I gave Jacynta a wish list and she ticked every box. We even got to extend our holiday for very little extra.

No customer Service

I booked a holiday online with a stopover. The second flight time has been moved and we will not make the connection. We have emailed and called Abbey travel to get the flight changed but have not had any reply and cannot do the change online. I will now have to travel into their Head Office and hope someone can assist in person. They have no email address for complaints and so hope this review will prompt a response.

Bought a package for Arsenal vs Fulham

Great experience with Abbey Travel this summer! I saw they were offering reasonably priced tickets for Arsenal matches (compared to other travel companies) and enquired about the recent Arsenal vs Fulham game. Got in touch with Paul Nolan, who quickly sorted me out for a match package. I received my e-ticket and hotel itinerary by email days before the fixture as well as vouchers for the stadium tour and food. It was great value for money, Paul was very helpful and both my ticket and vouchers worked just fine- I will definitely use Abbey Travel again sometime soon.

FAMILY HOLIDAY

I cannot find an email address to send…

I cannot find an email address to send query about my booking. I am advised to manage my booking through My Trip but no mention of the need to go through Customer Verification with Ryanair Notice from Ryanair "This booking was made through a third party travel agent who has no commercial relationship with Ryanair to sell our flights. You need to verify this booking in order to be able to manage it by yourself. Why do you need to verify? If you do not complete verification and check-in online, you will need to attend the Ryanair desk at least 2-hours pre-departure and check-in at the airport for a fee. Please see our Table of Fees here."

La Liga soccer tickets

I booked some tickets for an Athletico Madrid vs Barcelona La Liga soccer game via Abbey Travel Sports Department. I was dealing with Paul Nolan who was so sound to deal with, we received the tickets via email a week in advance and they were in such a great location in the stadium. We have booked some rugby trips with Abbey Travel before and all have gone just as well as this soccer trip. Abbey Travel obvsiously have access to great contacts for tickets! Thanks again Paul!

We in good faith booked flights &…

We in good faith booked flights & accommodation to Iceland with Abbey travel last summer we paid our deposit 600€ with a balance due this February to fly beginning of April. We started to receive quiet threatening emails cancelling our trip if the final payment of 1000€ wasn't paid on time We duly paid. We received our tickets by email last week and to our big surprise 0 luggage allowance. Please note we had paid 128€ for luggage We have spent the last few days to contact company through both email and phone calls Eventually today we received an email stating we had an allowance of 10kg each on our luggage 128€ for 10 kg x 2 seems quiet excessive we have asked for new tickets to be issued and a proper explanation on the cost of said luggage. Very surprised and disappointed with this company it would have been easier and less stressful if we'd booked ourselves🙁

There was an inhouse error whilst issuing your air tickets, so we do apologise. We would like to point out though we do need balances to be paid on time as airlines/hotels could cancel products if we do not pay them on time. I visited Abbey Travel Naas on Thursday February 29th and spoke with Lisa Cannon who was very helpful in selecting holiday options for me. The following day in Lisa’s absence I spoke with Angela Hayden and was able to complete my booking. On Saturday March 2nd Lisa contacted me to ensure everything was good to go and was able to help with a last minute hitch. I very much appreciated the follow up and customer service given by Lisa. I have used Abbey Travel Naas many times over the past 30+ years and will do so again, and will happily recommend them and their excellent staff.

Abbey travels hidden gem

We booked with Jacynta last year and absolutely loved her personal knowledge of where we were going (1st time to travel to this destination) and she was 100% spot on about it. After I made a mistake with the online…

After I made a mistake with the online booking, the sales agent looked after me. I should have been charged but the fee was waved. Be very careful loading the passenger names with the online booking. The sales staff in the Abbey St office could not help changing my booking mistake, which seems odd, this is confusing as it’s all named Abbey Travel. My suggestion is to have the full booking preview with names of passengers displayed before allowing the final booking fee to be processed.

Best Travel Agent

Karen at Abbey Travel was the most helpful travel agent I have ever dealt with! She took all the hassle out of booking flights to Australia for my husband and I as well as my daughter, who was leaving from a different country and wanted to meet us in Dubai for the flight to Brisbane and was returning on a different date. A great experience booking with Abbey Travel.

A great experience. A user friendly website, lots of accommadation to choose from to suit your needs at competitive rates. Loads of pictures and written detail on the website about each hotel,resort ect... you can book your flights as part of the package as well if you want. We received an email confirming out booking only minutes after we had paid online. A great quick service.

Arigatogozaimasu Becci

Wanting a once in a lifetime holiday to japan I had tried lots of travel agents in the north of Ireland where I live with no real success but fortunately having left a voice message on abbey travel's phone line Becci returned my call. She was fantastic from the start. Nothing was to much trouble, all my endless questions, queries and changes were answered with the same enthusiasm!! We booked everything Becci recommended, flights were flawless, our hotel was in the ideal location and was perfect for all our needs (a miracle with a party of 6) and private transfers made our arrival in toyko so easy. Trip to Vienna

I dropped by Abbey Travel to price an upcoming trip having got various prices prices both online and other travel agents and I was pleasantly surprised at the cost so I immediately booked the trip. I was so satisfied that within a couple of days I upgraded to a better hotel and return transfer to my hotel. The booking agent Toni was very helpful and made the experience very simple. Very friendly

Very friendly. We asked when booking for walk in shower young lady said she would have to email our hotel/apartment and would get back later that day to let us know if they could facilitate us. She was back to us before close of business on the same day to say all was good and yes we would have what we require.

No customer Service

I booked a holiday online with a stopover. The second flight time has been moved and we will not make the connection. We have emailed and called Abbey travel to get the flight changed but have not had any reply and cannot do the change online. I will now have to travel into their Head Office and hope someone can assist in person. They have no email address for complaints and so hope this review will prompt a response.

Bought a package for Arsenal vs Fulham

Great experience with Abbey Travel this summer! I saw they were offering reasonably priced tickets for Arsenal matches (compared to other travel companies) and enquired about the recent Arsenal vs Fulham game. Got in touch with Paul Nolan, who quickly sorted me out for a match package. I received my e-ticket and hotel itinerary by email days before the fixture as well as vouchers for the stadium tour and food. It was great value for money, Paul was very helpful and both my ticket and vouchers worked just fine- I will definitely use Abbey Travel again sometime soon.

I cannot find an email address to send query about my booking. I am advised to manage my booking through My Trip but no mention of the need to go through Customer Verification with Ryanair Notice from Ryanair "This booking was made through a third party travel agent who has no commercial relationship with Ryanair to sell our flights. You need to verify this booking in order to be able to manage it by yourself. Why do you need to verify? If you do not complete verification and check-in online, you will need to attend the Ryanair desk at least 2-hours pre-departure and check-in at the airport for a fee. Please see our Table of Fees here."

The Battle Abbey sword: recreating a unique medieval weapon  

Tod Todeschini specialises in TV engineering consultancy and engineering demos, Special Effects, model making and historical artefact reproduction.

I have been commissioned by  English Heritage  to make a replica of this fascinating sword to be put on permanent display in Battle Abbey, and so have looked closely at the piece, photographing and measuring it at the  National Museums Collection Centre  in Edinburgh. The blade has a (unknown) makers mark and is without a doubt a strong blade made for war, not just for show; it has the patina of a well looked after but ancient blade. The guard and pommel are made in iron and covered in silver plates, which have then been engraved and gilded, to create components with a unique level of decoration for a medieval sword, making this a very important piece.

My first impression of the sword was its large size and weight, and my initial thoughts were that all is not as it seems… Of course, looking back 600 years it is often hard to know exactly what has happened, but it appears that the sword grip or the blade or both have been shortened by a few centimetres, which in terms of how a sword feels and handles can make a massive difference. This may seem like vandalism now, but in fact may have happened during the ‘working life’ of the sword, or possibly to repair damage or alter its appearance in the display-hungry Victorian era, when everything medieval was hung on a wall.

This sword was examined for a magazine 150 years ago and it was noted then that, at the time of writing, the grip had been recently added. We therefore know that this is a later addition, and that then it was an olive green colour, perhaps following what was originally fitted.

It would have been a great pleasure to make and engrave the guard and pommel as it was originally done – this is one of the pleasures of my job, walking in the footsteps of previous craftspeople. But these pieces were fire gilded with mercury and this I cannot safely (or legally) do, and so these pieces will be made in a different way. The guard and pommel will be carved in jewellers’ wax and investment cast in bronze and then gold plated.

When the castings came back from the foundry, they were fettled to make them fit the sword perfectly. The finish was excellent and required very little touching up, just a little filing and engraving the odd line that was near the filling sprues.  I gave them a light polish, but not enough to bring them up like a mirror and then sent them off for gold plating.

Once they were back, it was a very simple job to assemble the whole sword as everything had already been prepared.

The sword can be seen in a new exhibition on monastic life at Battle Abbey, opening to the public on Saturday 1 April. The exhibition combines recreated objects, such as Abbot Thomas Ludlow’s sword, with archaeological finds that illustrate everyday life for the monks in the Benedictine Abbey. The ‘Battle Abbey Sword’ was made for the Abbot of Battle Abbey around 1417 -1434 and is a splendid and unique medieval war sword. It was acquired in the 1800s by the Meyrick Collection and donated to National Museums Scotland in the early 20th century.
