PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting Review: A PGA Pro’s Experience

I recently took one of my students for a full bag fitting at our local PGA TOUR Superstore in Altamonte Springs, FL. In doing so, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to do a professional PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting review.

Our  PGA TOUR Superstore full bag fitting was an amazing experience for us. Our fitter, Charles Moore, was a master fitter with over 20 years of experience. He used high-end technology like the Trackman Launch Monitor and SAMPuttLab putting analysis tools and software to diagnose any issues.

The three-hour session ran through all of the clubs in Lincoln’s bag. Charles started with irons, followed by Lincoln’s putter, wedges, and finally with his woods and driver. The time flew by, and the insights we learned will surely help Lincoln going forward.

After a 3-hour fitting, a few things we learned were:

  • Change Lincoln’s 7-iron to a more upright degree to tighten his shot distribution.
  • Shorten his driver to gain more control off the tee.
  • Minor tweaks were made to his wedge lofts, gapping, and bounce.
  • The putter was looking good.

I’ve been a golf instructor for 27 years and have been certified by the PGA for 15 years, and this is my first full bag fitting. After this experience, I’m convinced that a proper fitting is something all serious golfers need to do.

The only drawback could be the cost. Individual club fittings start at $40 to $50, while a full bag fitting at PGA Tour Superstore costs $99 to $300 ( check your local PGATSS stores pricing ). The more expensive fittings use more premium technology to analyze your swing.

If you spend hundreds or thousands on golf equipment and hours at the range or course, I think most golfers will consider this a solid investment. But please read on to decide for yourself, and at the end, I dive into the specific costs.

A PGA TOUR Superstore club fitting uses readings from technology such as Trackman  and SAM PuttLab  to recommend the best way to improve issues with your game.

That was exactly what our Studio Fitter, Charles, did as we went through the fitting, starting with Lincoln’s irons and then moving on to his putter, wedges, woods, and driver.

Here is a quick bit about our Studio Fitter:  Charles is originally from Gainesville, Florida. It was clear he had a true passion for golf. In talking with him, we found out he began his golf journey at 7, and today, at age 45, he is still just as passionate. He originally got his start in the golf industry in 1995, where he worked as a caddy, and then moved into the retail space in 1999, working for a store in Myrtle Beach. Charles has been a master fitter for over 20 years  after becoming certified through major golf vendors, including Callaway, Taylormade, PING, and Titleist.

I was thoroughly impressed with the Studio Full Bag Fitting at the PGA TOUR Superstore, and I know that my student Lincoln was also. The following are the positives and negatives we both took from the experience.

  • It can help you get a good understanding of your swing tendencies
  • It can help you see where your equipment is helping you
  • It can help you see where your equipment is hurting you
  • It can instantly help you improve your game with equipment modifications
  • A fitting is not a cure-all for an ailing game, but a compliment to lessons as well as practice
  • It could be considered too expensive for some (I’ll cover the full costs below)

Lincoln and I will remember the Studio Full Bag fitting at the PGA TOUR Superstore in Altamonte Springs, FL, for years. Our fitter, Charles, shared his decades of experience and sincerely wanted to help Lincoln reach his full potential.

Additionally, all the various reports from tools like Trackman and SAMPuttLab provide a great deal of valuable information after the fitting. As a coach , that information is great for me to go through with my students after a fitting session and when we are at our next session together.

I would absolutely recommend it to anyone to go through a fitting, even if it’s not a full-bag fitting.

Lincoln will work with a 7-iron with a more upright degree to help balance his contact on the face. After looking through the SAMPuttLab reports, it was good to see that his putting and putter were right on. His wedges also looked good, with some minor suggestions to change the gapping or the distance between clubs. He could also tweak the widget lofts and bounce.

The driver fitting takes the most time, and Charles had some expert insight to share. He noticed Lincoln’s driver was too long, and this is a common problem for many golfers. He cut down his driver right there, which should immediately save Lincoln some strokes.

I’ll go into more detail as I cover each club and what was looked at and share some pictures.

“It was cool to learn about different aspects of equipment and how it can affect your game. It was very helpful and helped coach and I make  some good decisions about equipment changes I should make to help further the work we are doing together. It’s crazy that only a degree or two of lie angle can make such a big difference. Getting a fitting can help a golfer in many ways, and it might be a good idea to consider getting one done.” ~ Lincoln Nascimento [My student who received the fitting]

In our club fitting , Charles had Lincoln warm up and get loose in the hitting bay. After that, Lincoln hit several 7-irons to get some baseline numbers from Trackman . Key areas that were looked at included:

  • Where on the clubface strikes were made at impact
  • The path Lincoln was swinging as he approached the ball at impact
  • Whether his clubface was square, open, or closed at impact
  • His spin rate on shots
  • His overall shot dispersion

Once these baseline readings were made, Charles measured the lie angle of Lincoln’s 7-iron and its length . These factors often play a key role in the patterns a golfer shows in their shots.

Lincoln’s irons were pretty close to the standards for the club brand he plays.

Result: With all the information gathered, Lincoln hit a second 7-iron that was more upright than the standard . This significantly helped balance out where on the face he was making contact with the ball and tightened up his shot distribution.

Next up was the putter fitting stage of the session. The Science and Motion , or SAM PuttLab, was used in this area. This awesome technology helps take a deep dive into the dynamics of golfers’ putting and how their path and face react at impact.

putter fitting at pga tour superstore during full bag club fitting

Putting is very much an individual thing and is as much a feel and comfort thing as anything else.  If a golfer can consistently deliver the putter face squarely into the ball at impact, then how they accomplish that does not matter. What you are looking for with poor putters is issues with face control   at impact  and things like distance control.

Lincoln’s putting is consistent regarding how his face comes into the ball at impact. While there were some suggestions for putters to try, we were both pleased with how his baseline numbers looked .

Result: No changes were made to his putter.

Charles Moore, master fitter, works with golf student at launch monitor during PGA TOUR Superstore full bag club fitting

Following the putter fitting, Charles worked with Lincoln on his wedges. With a wedge fitting, like with the irons, the fitter looks first to see a player’s tendencies.

Charles had Lincoln hit several full swing, half swing, and open face lob shots with each of his wedges . Things that are being looked at with the wedges include:

  • The bounce on each wedge
  • The grind on each wedge
  • Gapping a player has between wedges
  • Club length, shaft type, and grip

Result:  Based on the findings of Lincoln’s tendencies and performance with his current wedges, some suggestions were made to slightly modify his gapping, lofts, and ever so slight changes to his bounces.

driver fitting at PGA Tour Superstore full bag club fitting using trackman hitting bays and launch monitor

The final stage of Lincoln’s full bag fitting focused on his woods and driver. Most of the time spent in this area was focused on his driver.

Once again, the process is pretty much the same as was the case with the irons and wedges. Lincoln started by getting warmed up and then proceeded to get into capturing data with his current driver.

Again, a baseline is set to see his tendencies, and then the actual fitting or suggesting of changes is made.

Key Takeaway: The biggest insight with this portion of the fitting was the massive difference between the length of a driver on the PGA TOUR vs. what the average amateur carries in their bag. The PGA TOUR average driver length is 44.75”, compared to the average amateur’s driver clocking in at 45.5” to 46.5”.

Charles quickly pointed out that most drivers are simply too long for the average golfer , which is a big reason why control is such an issue.

Result: Lincoln and I agreed, and he chopped his driver down to help gain more control off the tee.

Now, this may sound great, but what is the cost of a PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting? Well, types and pricing may vary depending on the store location. The following is pricing at my local store in Altamonte Springs, FL.

At stores using technology like the Trackman and SAMPuttLab, most individual club fittings range between $49 and $99. The Full Bag Fittings cost $300.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • A 25-minute performance evaluation for any club: $49
  • A fairway, hybrid, or wedge fitting: $59
  • A driver, iron, or putter fitting: $99
  • A Studio Full Bag Fitting (3 hours): $300

At stores that don’t use as expensive technology, you’ll pay around $40 for an individual club fitting. The Full Bag Fittings cost $99.

Club Fittings to Consider:

Our fitter, Charles, walked us through a prioritized list of clubs you should get a fitting for if you couldn’t afford a full bag fitting or just need help with one or two clubs.

Each store has varying options and prices, so check the offerings and prices at your local store . You can book a reservation now if you’re ready.

I always believed that combining regular golf instruction and club fitting could pay big dividends to any golfer. After going through a full-bag three-hour fitting session at the PGA TOUR Superstore, I am now convinced that a proper fitting is something that all serious golfers need to do.

Golf equipment off the shelf or purchased online is not one-size-fits-all.

  • Having clubs that are too long, too heavy, or don’t have the right lie angle can absolutely cost you strokes.
  • Having a toe-hang putter, when you are better off with a face-balanced one, can cost you strokes.
  • Having wedges with improper gapping or an incorrect bounce can also cost you strokes.

Getting a proper fitting done can truly help your game.

Alyssa Hockenbury general manager of PGA Tour Superstore in Alamonte Springs, Florida

“Regardless of your level of play, getting custom-fit golf clubs offers some key advantages. From drivers to putters, it’s important that each club in the bag adds to a player’s skills while compensating for their tendencies. It is far better to improve your game using golf clubs that match your swing characteristics and don’t impede your improvement.” Alyssa Hockenbury, General Manager of PGA TOUR Superstore in Altamonte Springs, FL

The PGA TOUR Superstore brand is owned and operated by Arthur Blank . In addition to the PGA TOUR Superstores, Blank is also the co-founder of Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC.

Founded in 2003, the PGA TOUR Superstore is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and currently has 76 locations throughout the United States. Florida has the most locations with 10, followed by Texas with nine, and California and Illinois with six locations each.

In addition to being one of the country’s largest “big box” golf stores, offering a massive selection of golf equipment, apparel, and more, PGTSS offers other great services and benefits, including:

  • Club Repair
  • Fitting Services
  • Numerous Lesson Programs and Packages
  • In-Store Special Events
  • Indoor Practice Bays
  • Indoor Putting Greens
  • Online Buying Guides
  • Rewards Membership Program
  • Tennis & Pickleball Needs

PGA TOUR Superstore uses varies types of high-quality launch monitors by Trackman and Foresight GC2s. Both are premium launch monitors professional golfers use to track and improve their swing. Trackman is the leader in the launch monitor sector of the game. The data from the Trackman monitors at the PGA TOUR Superstore are very accurate.

PGA TOUR Superstore is owned and operated by Arthur Blank, the co-founder of Home Depot. Blank is also the owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC.

Employees of the PGA TOUR Superstore do not make commissions. Sales associates won’t try to pressure you for a sale to make a commission. Glassdoor.com says they make between $40 and $63K annually regardless. Indeed.com states Retail Sales Associates make around $14 per hour.

You can try out a large selection of irons and other clubs at the PGA TOUR Superstore. The best way to truly see what clubs may be best for you is to get a fitting while there. If you are buying clubs, you can get a basic fitting for free as the associate helps you find the right clubs.

You can get free fittings at PGA TOUR Superstores if you are buying clubs from them. A rep will let you test out the equipment in the hitting bays and help you find the right clubs to fit your swing tendencies. But it won’t be as in-depth as a full-bag club fitting. Pricing varies by location, but you can review the prices at your local PGATSS and book a reservation online.

I hope this PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting review has proven helpful for you. It is crazy to me, after 27 years working in the golf business and the last 15 years as a PGA Professional, that I have never watched a full bag fitting in its entirety.

When I left the fitting my student Lincoln went through at the PGA TOUR Superstore, my appreciation for the work club fitters do to help people enjoy the game more grew by leaps and bounds. I sincerely appreciated my experience at the PGATSS and know my student also gained a great deal from it.

If you have been on the fence about getting professionally fit for golf equipment, I will say this… don’t hesitate any longer, as a fitting can be what your game has been looking for.

President of PGA Tour Superstores on Planning For The Future

By kathlene bissell | mar 28, 2023.

PGA Tour Superstore, White Plains,Syndication: Westchester County Journal News

Recently, I sat down with Jill Spiegel, President of PGA Tour Superstore, for a one-on-one interview to discuss the growth of the company and her part in it.  In addition, Spiegel was a guest on The Golf Show 2.0 podcast. This is Part II of a two-part article. Part I can be found here.

If PGA Superstore is any guide, golf is definitely on the upswing. Their business is beyond good, according to Jill Spiegel, the relatively newly appointed president of the company.

“The first half of ’21, we did more business than we did in all of 2019, which was unbelievable,” Spiegel said about the company’s success, even though the pandemic wasn’t over in 2021.

Some of the company’s growth came from expansion, but their same-store growth was up nearly 60 percent. These days, sales and the number of stores continue to expand.

“Our average volume has increased dramatically,” Spiegel added.  “It’s really a combination of both.”

"“It’s not just about transactions. it’s about relationships, and we really feel that way when we have customers come in.”  —  Jill Spiegel, President of PGA Tour Superstores."

In 2019, eCommerce was a much smaller part of their overall business, Spiegel said, but when they were faced with shutting down stores in 2020, online tripled. Today, eCommerce sales are not the lion’s share, nor do they want it to be.

“It contracted a little this year (2022), but it’s still so much higher than it was back in ’19,” she noted, adding that they really prefer having customers come into the stores.

“We don’t want to do eCommerce business in place of brick and mortar,” she said.

"“It’s an experience (when you come to the stores), and you don’t get that same experience on the website as you do when you’re in the store.”"

She looks at it as omnichannel. A lot of their customers utilize online information to research what products are available, whether clothing or equipment. Then they come into the stores for the purchase. Or they come to the stores to be fit for clubs or for a lesson.

Right now, she believes it’s a good balance, but eCommerce is significantly lower than 40% of sales.

The main focus for Spiegel in the upcoming months is to execute the expansion without losing what they believe is great customer service in every store.

“A lot of our markets were new last year, and we have eight more scheduled for this year,” she noted.

In 2022, they opened eight PGA Tour Superstores.

Three of them were in California: Pleasanton, Cupertino, and Torrance. (They already had a store in East Palo Alto.)  They debuted in the Milwaukee market. They also added stores in Tampa, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Rockville, Maryland.

“By the end of this year (2023), we’ll have five stores in Chicago, more than we’ll have in any one city,” Spiegel said about the continued growth.

States with the most to date are Florida with 10 locations and Texas with nine.

“We look at where we go based on how much golf is played,” she noted.

States with the most golf courses, according to the National Golf Foundation are, in order, Florida (1238), California (964), Michigan (860), New York (830), and Texas (819).

In theory, that should be an indicator of where stores will open in the future. But some locations are just golfier than others. Like Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where PGA Tour Superstore started as Martin’s Golf & Tennis.

This year, PGA Tour Superstore plans to open in another eight locations.

Which will bring the total to 66. They expect to be in the mid-70s by 2024, and by 2026, the company plans to have nearly 100 stores.

One factor in the choice of the store location is real estate availability and price. PGA Tour Superstore looks for deals in or near existing shopping areas. For example, they purchased the leases of many Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores and converted them to PGA Tour Superstores.

“A lot of our stores the last year have been Toys R Us or Babies R Us, and we were able to get into some very expensive markets with advantageous pricing because of that,” Spiegel explained.

"“We entered the Boston market with three stores. I think all of those were either Toys or Babies, and one of the California stores we opened, the one in Pleasanton, was a Babies R Us.”"

Their real estate division is always on the lookout for opportunities.

But with expansion comes the challenge of providing the same consistent service at each location. Recently they had what they call their annual summit, which they were not able to do during the time of COVID. While they usually do them in Atlanta, this time, it was held at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

“We trained 240 of our club fitters across the company,” Spiegel explained.

"“It’s an amazing event. All the OEMs (equipment manufacturers) come in. It’s a big demo day. It’s educational classroom teaching, and then they go out on the range, and they talk equipment. Not only is it great training and great information, it’s a cultural infusion as well.”"

Spiegel said she had received many thank you emails from club fitters who attended. That is just the tip of the golf tee when it comes to training.

PGA Tour Superstore also built a new training center and performance facility in Atlanta on the second floor of their offices. The Atlanta training center is a replica of a store with the studios, the repair area, and the instruction bays.

“We bring in fitters, we bring in service people, like people who are doing repairs and putting on grips and bending clubs,” she explained.

Instructors are also included in special training sessions.

“When we have new people, they come in every week for training because we want consistency in how you’re fitting and how you’re teaching and how you’re putting grips on,” she noted, adding that it was a multi-million dollar investment, but worth every penny.

Each skilled area is a niche, and PGA Tour Superstore wants to create consistency from location to location.

“The repair area is hard to do. It’s kind of a lost art, so it’s like how do we find those people, and get them trained up,” she added.

Spiegel is enthusiastic about the challenge of making it all work, from finding new store locations, to seeing new customer service staff get training, to seeing the stores open, to visiting a store after it opens, to seeing customers come through the door.

But the goal is to provide a solid, dependable customer experience that’s as identical as it can be whether it’s in Seattle or Orlando. The customer service personnel, she notes, are what make it work.

"“What we always worry about is, because we are growing double digits every year, how do you protect the culture? The two most important groups of people in our mix are our associate and our customer,” she insisted.  “It’s not just about transactions. it’s about relationships, and we really feel that way when we have customers come in.”"
Next. Jill Spiegel, President of PGA Tour Superstore, Heads Up Next Expansion. dark

What’s ahead? More stores, for sure, and in the future, maybe some international locations.

In Canada, she pointed out, 15 or 16 percent of the population plays golf compared to the US which is closer to 7 or 8 percent.

Si Woo Kim one good putting week away from capturing his fifth PGA Tour title.

The PGA Tour stops in McKinney, Texas, this week for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, a name that doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

This will be the fourth time TPC Craig Ranch has hosted this event and each of the first three turned into birdie-fests.

The winning scores in the previous three have been -23, -25 and -26, so golfers will need to make a lot of birdies in order to contend this week.

The course is a par-71 that measures more than 7,400 yards. It features tree-lined fairways and water hazards on 13 of the 18 holes.

You would think that would translate into a difficult test for the pros, but that hasn’t been the case. It has played as one of the five easiest courses on the tour in each of the last three years.

Wind and rain are in the forecast, so perhaps it won’t be so forgiving this time.

Given the length of the course, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have some distance off the tee. There are very few wedges used at this event, as 70% of approach shots in 2023 came from at least 150 yards.

Golfers who have good proximity numbers with their mid and long irons will have a significant advantage this week getting onto the large bentgrass greens.

Course history has not been very predictable at this event, so don’t hesitate looking at golfers who have never played at TPC Craig Ranch.

At the end of the day, this week will be all about making birdies.

Top odds to win the CJ Cup Byron Nelson

Cj cup byron nelson best bets, si woo kim to win (+1800, betrivers ).

Kim has struggled on the greens this year but has still managed to make the cut in all 11 of the events he has started.

He has gained at least 5.7 tee-to-green strokes in six of his last eight starts, which puts him up there with the best in the field over that timeframe.

He’s a good total driver of the ball, excellent on approach, and he has been terrific around the green this season.

He’s one good putting week away from capturing his fifth PGA Tour title. I could see it coming this week since he finished second at last year’s event.

Will this be the week Adam Scott puts it all together for his first PGA Tour win of the season?

Adam Scott to win (+2500, BetMGM )

If you just look at Scott’s finishes, he appears to be having a very consistent year, but his strokes-gained metrics in his game log are all over the place.

He’ll gain off the tee and around the green one week and he’ll gain on approach and on the green the next week.

The way I see it, he just needs all parts of his game to fire on the same week and he’ll find himself back in contention.

I like the number that we are getting in this weak field and the fact that he’s finished T32 and T8 in his two starts at this event.

Nate Lashley top 40 (+125, bet365 )

My model always seems to love Lashley. For what it’s worth, he’s come through more often than not this year.

If you look at his statistics, he’s above the field average in all four of the strokes-gained metrics.

You might see a lot of missed cuts in his game log, but they have almost all been by one or two strokes.

On a strokes gained basis, he’s actually having a very good year.

He’s finished in the top 25 at this event in each of the last two years, and we are getting +160 on him to finish in the top 40 this week.

Peter Kuest top 20 (+330, FanDuel )

Kuest burst onto the scene last summer and rattled off a number of top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour. Eventually, he ran out of sponsor’s exemptions and failed to secure his tour card for this season.

However, he has played well on the Korn Ferry Tour and got an invite to play in the Corales event a couple of weeks ago. He finished in the top 10 and earned himself a spot in this field.

He’s a bomber off the tee and can make birdies in bunches. He played here last year and finished T14.

Golf Galaxy vs PGA Superstore: What’s the Difference?

When you look at the price of golf clubs and other equipment, it becomes paramount to ensure you’re getting the right one.

Because, if your tool is not the right fitting, you will not only waste money but can also injure yourself while playing.

No wonder there are dozens of club-fitting stores; more keeps opening up.

The most popular right now seem to be Golf Galaxy, PGA Superstore, Club Champion, etc. Unfortunately, fitting into these clubs can sometimes be hit or miss.

And while they have different names, they all look to be similar. So, how can you differentiate?

By considering the experience of other golfers who have gone there to fit as well as the pricing model for each.

In this article, we’ll be looking at and comparing both PGA Superstore and Golf Galaxy. Keep reading.

Golf Galaxy vs PGA Superstore: Which is Better?

Golf Galaxy vs PGA Superstore

The truth is that the experience of each golf at each fitting store may differ. While some prefer GG over PGASS, others find the opposite to be true.

The most important is the employee that fits you.

If you meet the right employee, both can work for you. Unfortunately, it can be the other way around too.

It can also depend on the location too since that can affect the tool available and ultimately the performance.

However, that doesn’t mean there can’t be one that is universally better than the other. Fortunately, that’s what this article aims to give you.

To let you know what most people feel more comfortable with between the two.

Pricing Model

In terms of pricing, they are pretty similar. However, PGASS actually offers a free fitting while GG starts at around $100.

That means you will be able to try the clubs on a club monitor and see where you go from there.

Another service that PGASS also offer is Tour Van Experience where you work with a professional to try out different stock shafts until you find the right feel, look, and performance.

That makes them cheaper than GG, which would make sense for anyone looking at it from a pricing point of view.

Recognition & Miscellaneous Features

pga tour superstore financing

Golf Galaxy has a greater brand recognition than PGA Superstore in general.

PGA is reported to have more convenient customer support and also offers zip financing and international shipping policies which Golf Galaxy doesn’t.

PGA also doesn’t accept PayPal payments and modification of policies which Golf Galaxy gives the liberty to.

Both brands offer frequent discounts and promotions during holidays or festive sessions, one might watch out for those.

Locations to Fit

The main difference between Golf Galaxy and PGA Tour Superstore will be the number of locations they’re available in.

Golf Galaxy has 35 stores and PGA has 22, both brands are spread around the States – but they also have online stores.

This means you are more likely to come across a Golf Galaxy store than a PGA Superstore, and Golf Galaxy probably has more exposure and a higher chance of risk than PGA.

The retail brands also offer fitting services at their various locations but Golf Galaxy also gives you the option of scheduling an online session.

Service Variety

PGA Superstore provides fewer fitting services than Golf Galaxy: putter, golf ball, wedge, iron, and driver fitting, and an upgraded fitting experience via the PGA Tour Superstore studio.

Golf Galaxy has a more flexible range of choices which includes the services offered by PGA Superstore and a bit more: hybrid analysis, shaft fitting, grip fitting analysis, club comparison, and a virtual club advisor.

Club Champion vs Big Box Stores

The advantage of Club Champion is that their testing option is limitless, compared to both Golf Galaxy and PGA Superstore and other big box stores.

These stores are only able to use the shaft options that are available to them through the manufacturer.

And the branches vary in what is available to them.

The only advantage is that they are cheaper than Club Champion. So, if you can’t afford the expensive club fitting, then you can go with PGA Superstore.

At least, they have more goodwill than their counterpart.

Final Thoughts on GG and PGASS

The general thought of both box stores is that their services are generally poor.

A lot of golfers who have gone fitting for both GG and PGASS have complained of extremely poor fitting, which eventually affects their club pricing.

Most recommend Club Champion, so if you have one in your location, you may want to consider that.

Over the past few years PGA TOUR Superstore has placed an emphasis on expansion to meet the demand for golf equipment as result of the increased participation in golf.

“(In 2020), a historic six million players either took up or returned to the game of golf, while at the same time as it was quickly recognized as a sport that provides ample time outdoors with natural social distancing,” Sullivan said in reference to the company’s expansion. “With these new locations, we look forward to serving everyone from beginners to well-seasoned avid golfers to help them enjoy the game.”

In 2022, Jill Spiegel was promoted to president of PGA TOUR Superstore, a move that positioned her as one of the highest-ranking female executives in the golf industry.

The longtime merchandising chief for golf’s leading retailer, Spiegel has been with Superstore since 2011. She assumes greater control of the company’s day-to-day operations from Sullivan, who added the executive chairman title to his CEO role and remains focued on growth strategies going forward. Spiegel previously was Superstore’s senior vice president and chief merchandising officer, meaning she oversaw all merchandising as well as financial planning at the venue level. She now has control of operations and planning for Superstore’s 50+ U.S. locations as well as ecommerce, marketing and construction.

“We’re still in growth mode,” Spiegel said. “We’re not slowing down, if anything, that growth is going to accelerate to an even greater degree. I look forward to taking on a bigger leadership role as we continue that growth.”

PGA TOUR Superstore owner Arthur Blank, also the co-founder of The Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC, has been committed to continued growth in the golf retail space. PGA TOUR Superstore is operated by Golf & Tennis Pro Shop, Inc., a subsidiary of AMB Group, LLC, which is headquartered in Metro Atlanta, Georgia.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

PGA TOUR Superstore remains the most comprehensive, one-stop shopping experience for golfers of all levels and budgets. Many golfers routinely spend hours inside a Superstore, testing clubs, getting lessons, rolling some putts and trying to decide which new product might best improve their game.

Amid a challenging retail sector, PGA TOUR Superstore has continued to expand and evolve by offering unique services and experiences that online businesses can’t – from fittings, lessons and simulators to the more than one million new grips it puts on clubs for consumers.

The company’s trajectory, including its continued expansion, is particularly notable in an era when big-box retail stores in every industry are facing challenges amid a societal shift in which more consumers are making more purchases online.

PGA TOUR SUPERSTORE ACHIEVES RECORD SALES FOR 2021

February 1, 2022

ATLANTA — PGA TOUR Superstore, the country’s leading specialty retailer for golf and tennis, reported record sales growth in fiscal 2021, while continuing to gain market share. The company also reached its 50-store milestone and plans to open at least eight new stores in 2022, as the specialty retailer helps drive the golf industry forward.

PGA TOUR Superstore outpaced broader golf retail industry growth in 2021, pointing to the game’s sustained momentum. Golf Datatech, a market research consultancy, reported 7 percent year-over-year golf retail industry growth in October and 4 percent in November, while PGA TOUR Superstore saw 21 percent and 19 percent sales increases in those same months, respectively.**

“We did more business in the first half of 2021 than we did in the full-year of 2019 which was a record year for us at the time,” said Dick Sullivan, President and CEO, PGA TOUR Superstore. “It has been incredible to see new people having fun and enjoying the game, and our business is uniquely equipped to meet the needs of that audience through our in-store and online experiences.”

“We’re excited to be part of PGA TOUR Superstore’s record growth and success,” said Jay Monahan, PGA TOUR Commissioner. “The golf industry continues to see unprecedented participation which filters into all areas of the business. PGA TOUR Superstore provides a tremendous one-stop location for both experienced golfers and beginners to have all the latest equipment and apparel for the course.”

PGA TOUR Superstore saw significant consumer interest in soft goods, notably on the women’s front. In 2021, women’s apparel sales increased by 59 percent and women’s footwear was up 67 percent from 2020, trends PGA TOUR Superstore expects to continue in 2022. This indicates a more relaxed lifestyle preference with golf apparel becoming more athleisure and being worn both on and off the course.

“The game of golf industry has changed, and PGA TOUR Superstore is committed to bolster the shifts toward a more social, approachable and inclusive game. Growing interest among women, junior and beginner golfers will continue and we’re aligning our strategy accordingly, while still focusing on our core avid golfers,” said Sullivan.

Golf’s changing landscape is being driven by new audiences picking up the sport such as women, millennials and generation Z, contributing to overall growth of the industry. According to the National Golf Foundation, 2021 total rounds exceeded those from 2020 by approximately 4%, amounting to approximately 529 million rounds played nationwide, the highest play total on record.

Golfer interest in PGA TOUR Superstore’s experiential in-store offerings also grew substantially in 2021, which includes state-of-the-art interactive simulators, and massive putting greens to test the widest selection of putters. This interest contributed to 64 percent growth of in-store lessons in 2021 vs. 2019 and 1.2 million clubs regripped in 2021.

On February 5, PGA TOUR Superstore will open its first store of 2022 in Tampa, FL and will open at least seven additional stores, expanding its retail footprint in states that do not currently have a physical store presence, including Charlotte, NC Philadelphia, PA and Rockville, MD.

As evidence of PGA TOUR Superstore’s ongoing community impact, in 2021 the company – in partnership with the First Tee, a youth development organization helping kids and teens build their strength of character through golf – hosted in its stores the inaugural Leadership Series. Nearly 300 First Tee teens across the country discovered personal values and leadership skills through interactive sessions facilitated by PGA TOUR Superstore general managers.

Forty students were then selected to participate in the first PGA TOUR Superstore / First Tee Leadership Summit. Set in the unforgettable backdrop of West Creek Ranch in Montana – which is owned by PGA TOUR Superstore Chairman and First Tee Foundation Board Member, Arthur M. Blank – the Summit was designed to strengthen the participant leadership skills through dynamic outdoor and team-building activities with the intended purpose of personal growth, education and coming together to make a difference. Four of the Summit participants were awarded scholarships for their ongoing education.

The PGA TOUR Superstore and First Tee Leadership Series, Leadership Summit and Scholarship program will all return in 2022.

Daughter's memory lives on through PGA TOUR rookie Hayden Springer

MCKINNEY, Texas – Hayden Springer was born two months early into a family of high-achievers.

His father, Neyland, was a U.S. Navy pilot. Hayden inherited his father’s preternatural calm, though it sometimes exhibited itself as abundant caution.

“If you sent Hayden across the street for a cup of sugar from the neighbor,” his mother, Jennifer, said with a laugh, “he would check the weather. He would check to see if there are any cars coming. He would be a lot more detailed about making sure the trip was safe.”

Springer’s childhood swing coach in Dallas, Rosey Bartlett, described a preteen Springer’s swing as John Daly-esque, but he shortened it by roughly 25% to improve consistency.

And in college, when he met the woman who would later become his wife on the first day of school at Texas Tech, he waited multiple months to ask her out. Emma eventually said yes.

But life also includes things that no amount of caution can protect you from or patience can prepare you for, like the grim news that Hayden and Emma received as they prepared for the birth of their first child. Hayden is perhaps the unlikeliest rookie on the PGA TOUR this year, and the road to fulfilling his dream also contains more heartbreak than most people could endure.

When Sage Elyse Springer was born on Oct. 1, 2020, she was expected to live just one to three days, if she survived birth at all, because of the genetic chromosomal condition Trisomy 18. What was supposed to be the happiest day of the Springers’ lives was clouded by sadness and uncertainty.

Hayden and Emma didn’t bring a car seat to the hospital, nor any newborn clothes. They were told they weren’t needed.

But Sage didn’t know about her dire prognosis. She left the hospital with her parents and went on to live for three years. They were three years that contained the full spectrum of emotions. The joy of parenthood was tinged with the knowledge of Sage’s condition and the short amount of time she was promised.

Sage was feisty and playful. She loved light-up toys and kicking her feet in bed. Cuddles, bubbles and her flying-saucer swing all made her smile. She loved all these things, so her family loved them too. Hayden and Emma held on tightly, determined to make the most of whatever time they had with her. Hayden was with her whenever he wasn’t trying to progress toward the PGA TOUR.

“During Sage’s life, he never shied away from learning how to care for her and in providing her care,” said Hayden’s mother, Jennifer. “During Sage’s hospital stays, Hayden spent most every night sleeping in the hospital room with her when he wasn’t traveling, and getting up when she needed something or when an alarm sounded on her monitoring devices. Sleeping at the hospital is rough after one night much less consecutive nights, and then practicing and playing during the day takes drive and commitment.”

Somehow, Hayden hit both marks – being there as a husband and father but also charting a path to the highest level of professional golf. If the measure of success is not just what we achieve but also what we overcome to achieve it, then Hayden Springer already stands tall even before the first ball is struck at TPC Craig Ranch this week.

"We don’t know what two years, or five years, or 10 years from now looks like," Springer said. "Trying to live knowing that, and also knowing that we’re very blessed to be healthy; we’re very blessed to be here, and for me to be playing on the PGA TOUR, it definitely is a blessing. There are times that are harder than others. I don’t know what the future looks like, so just trying to live each day with that, and working hard."

Time grows murky when late night meets early morning in a hospital’s pediatric care unit.

It was Jan. 6, 2021, and Sage, 3 months old, was being prepared for open-heart surgery. After completing a Florida mini-tour event that afternoon, Springer, in his third year of professional golf, arrived at the hospital just before midnight, joining his family in Texas until Sage was taken for a life-saving heart repair at 6:30 a.m. the next day. Again, she pulled through.

Hayden’s commitment endured for the better part of three years, the love story of a resilient child with inspirational spunk and her resilient dad who intended on playing the PGA TOUR someday. It was made possible by their family’s enduring support.

It would be unfair to expect a jet-lagged dad, spending nights in the hospital after returning from places like Brazil or Peru, to keep up with the constant flow of competitors who were vying for the same TOUR cards as him. While his competition committed every waking hour to the craft, Hayden was committed to being at Emma’s side. He would trade places with Emma during the day so he could work on his game, then return to the hospital at night. But for Springer, 27, that was the path to the top of his profession.

“He was well equipped to handle what he had to go through,” said Barry Hawkins, Springer’s golf coach at Byron Nelson High School and part of his close circle to this day. “He’s a faithful man. His trust is in something beyond what we understand, and I think that’s how he and Emma handled that.”

Yet … “I can’t fathom it,” Hawkins added. “I don’t understand it.”

Sage died Nov. 13, 2023. A month later, Hayden earned his first PGA TOUR card by tying for fourth at the final stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry. It was the first time since 2012 that Q-School offered a direct path to the PGA TOUR, and only five cards were available. The celebrations, which included the Springers’ second daughter, Annie, were accompanied by the void that Emma had left.

That void is filled with love. With hope. And with the memories.

Her family agreed that Sage would have relished the décor at last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. “A string of beads was something that she could easily grasp,” Jennifer said. “That was something that she could easily hold onto and that she loved.

“I love the way Sage looked at her parents and the way they looked at her,” she continued. “While she couldn’t verbalize her love with words, she conveyed her emotion with cuddles, snuggles, big kicks and big smiles.”

During the final months of Sage’s life and shortly afterward, her dad authored a story of competitive resilience that paralleled her spirit. (Hayden is Sage’s dad, after all.)

Six months before Q-School’s Final Stage, Springer made perhaps the putt of his life, a 7-footer for double-bogey to close his second round at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open. He had hit his tee shot out-of-bounds but made par with his second ball to make the cut on the number.

Springer didn’t realize it at the time, but that putt would prove pivotal. Rather than be sent back down to the mini-tours, he retained a tenuous but real connection to the PGA TOUR. As a conditional Korn Ferry Tour member, he essentially earned starts on PGA TOUR Canada with that tie for 53rd in Wichita. He ran with the opportunity, riding a small swing thought about his address position to two victories in his final three starts. The wins vaulted him to the top of the Fortinet Cup standings.

The No. 1 spot on PGA TOUR Canada meant full 2024 Korn Ferry Tour status at minimum, plus direct access to Q-School’s Final Stage for a chance at a TOUR card. He capitalized.

“When you come at it from a faith perspective, the timing is never wrong,” said Springer’s dad Neyland. “I think a lot of things that have happened in Hayden’s life have prepared him for what is coming now to fruition, and maybe were placed in his life to mature and to learn and to be ready for the opportunity.”

Springer, whose sister is also a pilot, pursues what he believes in. It dates to his preschool years, when a 4-year-old Springer would get upset with his dad for not bringing him to the golf course.

Springer was a good football and baseball player, even a solid wrestler. But professional golf was always in his mind’s eye.

“(He said) I plan on getting a degree, but if I don’t give this a shot, then I will never forgive myself,” Hawkins said. “He’s the only player that’s ever said that to me in 15 years.”

Springer’s unwavering commitment to his dream is a family trait. In hard times, it means leaning on others to support you as you press on.

“Joy and grief are swirling together like they were put into a blender,” Emma wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of her, Hayden, Annie and a PGA TOUR card. “Each one magnifies the other. We are blessed. We are sad. We are joyful. Thank you to our village!”

Sage’s legacy shines in her family as they navigate new experiences on the PGA TOUR, and through their foundation “Extra To Love,” which provides financial assistance for families of kids with Trisomy 13 and Trisomy 18, assisting in the cost of traveling for medical care and for adaptive aids “to help them experience more fullness of life.”

As Emma spoke Tuesday at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, she wore a necklace with four letters: S-A-G-E. The letters glittered in the afternoon Texas sun.

“I think what we learned from her is just that joy does not come from your circumstances,” Emma said, “because she was just such a joyful girl. You’d be in a situation where anybody else would just be miserable, and she'd have the biggest smile on her face. She’d be kicking her legs. She'd be so happy to play with you.

“And I think everybody has a lot to learn from that.”

The Springers now strive to share that joy with the world, through “Extra To Love” and beyond. Joel Thelen, who befriended the Springers while playing on PGA TOUR Americas, described Hayden as “super positive.”

“I think they realized it was a miracle that (Sage) persevered as long as she did,” Thelen said.

That spirit, uplifting amidst even the most gripping times, was apparent during Sage’s funeral service, eight days after her passing. Guests wore pink for Sage, and her dad delivered a moving remembrance.

“I’m about to turn 60,” said Hawkins, a father of 24-year-old triplets, “and for the life of me –I’ve witnessed some emotional things, nothing more powerful than watching Hayden during Sage’s funeral. Nothing more powerful. And I can’t say any more than that … just an absolutely powerful moment as a dad. All of a sudden, and I’m about to tear up now, I went from being a teacher and a mentor to him, to being a student, for what I saw.”

A month later, Springer earned his first TOUR card at Q-School’s Final Stage, completing an incredible display of inner strength that nearly defies belief – until you realize he was building this inner strength all along.

Through their foundation, and through everything Hayden and Emma do, really, believe Sage will live on. They don’t remember much about their wedding’s first dance, but the song from their last dance remains imprinted in their hearts”: “How Long Will I Love You” by Ellie Goulding.

How long will I love you? As long as stars are above you And longer if I can

Moscow Tries to Reinvent Itself as Financial Hub

MOSCOW — Having tried and failed to become a major financial center, Moscow is trying yet again — only this time it finds itself competing for business with Warsaw, not London, Tokyo and New York.

Moscow wants companies to list on the Moscow stock exchange. It wants money center banks to expand here, as well as insurance companies and law firms that deal with securities, to make Moscow the hub for the former Soviet Union or Eastern Europe.

To do all that, city leaders are inviting business to glittering new skyscrapers, including the Mercury City Tower, which at 75 stories is the tallest building in Europe.

“The idea is to upgrade the position of Moscow in ratings, to become closer to the leaders of innovation and to the big boys of international financial centers,” Andrei V. Sharonov, the deputy mayor for economic affairs, who led a roadshow tour promoting the city in Asia, said in an interview.

This spring, the city government sent deputy mayors to Tokyo, Singapore, Frankfurt, London, Boston and New York to tell banks and other financial companies they should take a closer look at Moscow. The trip was the first concerted effort by the city government to woo investors as tenants for the new high-rise financial district called Moscow City.

Certainly Moscow has a lot of wooing to do. A city of traffic-clogged highways and sprawling concrete apartment blocks, Moscow is widely known as a singularly difficult place to do business. It did attract the big banking houses from New York and London after the fall of Communism. But cronyism, the lack of transparency and shady accounting gave companies pause. Weak courts and selective enforcement encouraged companies to conduct business outside Russia.

Political change in Russia further sapped enthusiasm. Vladimir V. Putin, a skeptic regarding greater integration with the West, succeeded Dmitri A. Medvedev, who was seen as a modernizing figure, as president in a switch known as “the castling” for its resemblance to the chess move.

Mr. Medvedev had named senior Western bank executives to an advisory council for transforming Moscow’s financial sector. They included Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of JPMorgan Chase; Vikram S. Pandit, the former chief executive of Citigroup; and Lloyd C. Blankfein, the chief executive of Goldman Sachs.

But the Global Financial Center Index, published in March by Z/Yen, a consulting agency, placed Moscow 65th out of 79 cities studied. London was first, followed by New York and Hong Kong. The ranking placed Moscow between Bahrain and Mumbai. A survey by the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation even ranked Moscow No. 30 out of 30 Russian cities for ease of doing business.

“Moscow was never going to be an international financial center,” a Western banker working here, who was not authorized to speak for his employer on the matter, said of the effort. “That was a joke.”

So Moscow is setting its sights a little lower. Its biggest problem is to be taken seriously even as a regional center.

The midsize companies in neighboring Ukraine or other former Soviet republics are choosing to go public in Warsaw. They are hardly bothering to look at the carefully laid out welcome mat in Russia. Kernel, a Ukrainian corporate farming enterprise, and Coal Energy, a Ukrainian producer of steam coal, listed in Poland, where a policy of investing pensions in the stock market helps the local exchange.

The Warsaw stock exchange, in fact, has so many Ukrainian company listings it has a Ukraine index. Micex, the Russian stock exchange, has no such index because it has so few listings.

Moscow must compete, said Mr. Sharonov, the deputy mayor, because “there are a lot of other opportunities and competitors all over the world.”

Moscow’s roadshow was intended to illustrate the city’s efforts to become more livable for foreign executives and residents, Mr. Sharonov said. A new interchange links the financial district to nearby roads, for example, easing congestion.

Also, under the federal program to promote banking here, Russian financial regulators tied up loose ends in ways that pleased stock traders and other financial professionals, but have not been widely noticed.

Russia created a central securities depository, introduced standard accounting rules for publicly listed companies and is well on the way to consolidating nearly all financial regulatory authority in the central bank by 2015. And, without much fanfare, the government now insists that all listed Russian companies report financial results in accordance with international accounting standards.

“It’s a substantive change,” said Bruce Bower, the managing director of Verno Capital, a hedge fund that focuses on Russia. “The government realized that by doing a little work, for the first time, it could make a difference.”

Areas to Live In - Moscow

Expats guide for areas to live in moscow.

While Moscow differs considerably from most hometowns – the language, alphabet, climate – some things are very similar to the most sophisticated western cities – 24-hour supermarket shopping across the city, public transport that runs until 1:00 am and convenience stores on every corner.

Tverskaya-Kremlin

Distinguished old buildings dating back 300 years line Moscow’s main street. There are abundant cafes, clubs and restaurants and many calm oases off the busy main thoroughfare. Twenty-four-hour shopping is found on Tverskaya Street at the luxurious Elesevskaya store. Harking back to pre-revolutionary times with chandeliers, the store offers high-quality goods as well as international grocery shopping. Azbuka Vkusa, another top quality store, on the Garden Ring is open around the clock. You can find both the Anglia English book store, and the Moskva bookshop on Tvesrkaya street, which has with an English section on the ground floor open until midnight.

This is the historical heart, within walking distance of the Red Square, the Kremlin, GUM Department Store, and a clutch of theatres and museums. The Okhotny Ryad Trade Centre has a food court with many cafes. In the summer, there are many outdoor cafes where you can enjoy shashlik kebabs and beer while watching the world go by, or splashing in the fountains to cool down. On Sundays, there is free ball room dancing in Alexandrovsky Gardens, under the walls of the Kremlin. You can also watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

International Schools:  No Supermarkets:   Perekrostok  is a standard supermarket with a wide range of products and 7th Continent is a little more expensive but carries a wider range of products. Even if you’re not shopping you should still visit  Yeliseyevsky , on Tverskaya Street. It’s decorated in palatial style with lots of exposed wood, chandeliers and an intricately painted ceiling. Restaurants:  Yes, many. Mostly upmarket expensive restaurants, but a range of ethnic cuisine surrounds the Pushkin square area. This includes Italian, Indian, Chinese and German restaurants. McDonald’s and Kroshka Kartoshka for quick eats. Cinemas:  No Sport Facilities:  World class gym is a premium complex that caters for people who live or work in the center of the city. There are no other sports facilities in the Kremlin area.

Tsvetnoy Boulevard

Here you will find a mix of pre-revolutionary Czarist era buildings and modern developments, with a few post-Stalinist buildings. Plenty of restaurants and bars here, with the Nikulin Circus the main focus of the Boulevard itself. Off the main thorough-fare, which is prone to traffic jams in rush hour, there are many quiet areas and green spaces. There is easy access to the rest of the city center. Heading north beyond the Garden Ring, it is only a short car ride up Olympisky Prospekt to the Olympic swimming pool, the Renaissance Hotel and the Dome Cinema, one of the few Moscow cinemas devoted to English movies. For supermarkets, head to the Garden Ring or Tverskaya areas.

International Schools:  No Supermarkets:  No Restaurants:  There are many restaurants on and around the boulevard. In particular,  Yapona Mama  is a popular Japanese restaurant in building 3 of Tsvetnoy Boulevard. A short walk east is Syr (16/2 Sadovaya Camotechnaya) which is a French/Italian themed restaurant. Another Italian restaurant is  Casta Diva  which invites you to dine in 19th century opulence. It’s not for those on a budget. Cinemas:  The ‘American style’  Dome Cinema  in the Renaissance Hotel boasts free parking, Russian translation by headphones and occasional discounts. Call their answering machine for times: 931-9873. Sport Facilities:  The  Olympic swimming pool  is part of the Luzhniki sports complex and often has water sports events.

Lubyanka, Kitai Gorod, Chistye Pond

Although the modern translation would make this Chinatown, the name originates in old Russian and means middle town. This region lies between the Kremlin and the old White Walls, which were destroyed when the Boulevard ring was built. It features a mixture of elegant old buildings, monumental Stalinist structures – including the former KGB Headquarters on Lubyanka Square – and modern developments. The area is home to Moscow’s most famous clubs, and an abundance of restaurants from fast food and cheerfully inexpensive to gourmet dining.

The most famous fashion street, Kuznetsky, borders the area. Supermarkets compete for business 24-hours a day, including 7th Continent behind the Lubyanka Square KGB building. You can also find the TsUM Department Store, the Bolshoi Theater, and the House of Columns Theaters where ballet, opera and drama performances are scheduled. There is a beautiful park around the Chistye Ponds. The Rolan cinema, one of the few Moscow cinemas to include foreign language movies on its roster, faces the ponds.

International Schools:  No Supermarkets:   TsUM  is crammed full of exclusive brands and is busy all day with fashionistas getting manicures and buying the latest fashion accessories. There is also an ethnic food store called  Jagannath  near the Lubyanka building which stocks many uncommon spices and other foods which can’t be found in mainstream stores. Restaurants:  The area has many restaurants for all tastes and budgets. Try  Jagannath , which has a ethnic themed vegetarian buffet-restaurant. The staff don’t speak English, but it’s very popular with tourists and the staff are used to foreigners pointing to what they want! There is also an outlet of the popular chain  Il Patio . It’s inexpensive and the food is consistently good quality. Cinemas:  The  Rolan cinema  is 10 minutes walk from Chistye Ponds metro station and is considered a rather arty venue. It has a nice bar. Call them on 916-9190 for times. Sport Facilities:  The  Sandunovskiye baths  aren’t strictly speaking a sports activity, however, the seriousness with which Russians approach public bathing makes it worth mentioning. Sandunovskiye are considered the best baths in Moscow.

This rapidly developing area astride the Garden Ring offers an amazing range of apartments from pre-revolutionary Czarist-era buildings to modern developments, and the Kotelnicheskaya Naberezhnaya Apartment Building, one of the Stalinist seven sisters. These impressive buildings were constructed from 1947-1953 in a massive architectural undertaking that combined Gothic and baroque styles with the latest in skyscraper technologies. With its green spaces and parks bordering the river, the Novospassky Monastery is a cultural landmark.

A short swing round the Garden Ring takes you to the International Performing Arts Centre, which Muscovites know better as the House of Music. There’s a big choice of 24-hour supermarkets. Restaurants from fine dining to fast food and everything in between are on practically every street. This is an extremely quiet and pleasant area. If you work in Riverside Towers, or the Avrora Business Centre, this location should be on your short list.

International Schools:  No Supermarkets:  All upmarket chains are represented in this area. Restaurants:  As with most of Moscow, you can find almost any type of restaurant for any budget.  Beerstrasse  is a popular chain of German themed beer restaurants and there is one on Nizhegorodskaya Street near Taganskaya metro station. Try the ‘Oktoberfest’ meat pie. If you’re really hungry continue to Verkhnaya Radishchevskaya Street to the wonderfully named  Steak . The New York Steak comes in at 1200 rubles so, as with all steak houses in Moscow, be prepared to pay through the nose. Cinemas:  Illuzion (Tel: 915-4353), inside one of Stalin’s skyscrapers on Kotelnicheskaya, is famous for showing old Soviet era films and international classics. Sport Facilities:  There is a reasonably priced tennis court in Tagansky Park (Tel: 632 6420).

Zamoskvorechie

Old Moscow, beyond the river to the South, has the highest concentration of residential housing in the city centre. Some apartments have Kremlin views, but most of the buildings facing the Kremlin are either commercial offices, headquarters for major corporations, the British Ambassador’s Residence or the Balchug Kempinski Hotel. Before the Soviet Revolution, this was an elitist area dominated by the city’s rich merchant clans, where non-Muscovites were not accepted. There are narrow winding streets, green spaces and some modern developments springing up between the Czarist era pre-revolutionary buildings, including several embassy buildings.

Twenty-four-hour shopping with supermarkets on Novokuznetskaya street and neighbourhood stores throughout the area mix with all-night clubs and a wide choice of restaurants. There is an abundance of art galleries, from the famous Tretyakov Gallery to the open air art market beside the Moscow River. The famous Gorky Park is easily accessible from here, and there are many clubs and pubs, especially on Pyatnitskaya street.

International Schools:  No Supermarkets:  The huge Arkadia shopping center on Balshoi Ovchinkovsky Street is a standard mall with a range of shops and a food court. Restaurants:  A very good selection of restaurants. Go to Baltschug for European cuisine in a child friendly environment. They are well-known for their Sunday brunches and they have a children’s room. For a healthy treat try  Prime Star , the food is simple and cheap but incredibly popular. You can also get take-away which is convenient if your office is in this area Cinemas:   Pyat Zvyozd  is a 5 screen independent cinema in the Arkadia shopping center. Sport Facilities:  For walking or running Gorky park is the obvious choice although beware that in summer barbecues come out and any jogger will be treated to mouth watering wafts of cooking meat.

Arbat-Kropotkinskaya

The most colorful part of Moscow, with many old and Stalinist buildings behind the iconic Foreign Ministry building, is a busy area with some surprisingly quiet side streets and quiet parks. There are also lots of modern developments and new buildings. Many embassies and several Ministerial-type brick buildings are also in this area. The pedestrian street of Arbat links the Foreign Ministry to New Arbat Street. Street musicians, art and souvenir stalls and booksellers fill this pedestrian street, which is lined with cafes, restaurants and pubs.

Many 24-hour supermarkets, including 7th Continent, and neighbourhood stores are here. In the summer, this area is ideal for relaxed al fresco dining on the many outdoor terraces on Arabt street. Apart from street entertainment, there are many theatres and museums here. The reconstructed Christ the Saviour Cathedral is Moscow’s major Orthodox church. The Pushkin Museum of Fine Art has the largest collection of European art in Moscow.

International Schools:  No Supermarkets:  This area is serviced by a 7th Continent at Smolenskaya metro station. There used to be a Stockmanns which, to the dismay of expats, closed down due to a dispute with the landlords. It was replaced by  Perekrostok  which is big but doesn’t carry the same range of foreign goods. Restaurants:  In addition to the wide selection of restaurants, there’s a  Hard Rock Cafe  on Arbat Street, if you want something international and familiar. The Chinese restaurant  Peking Duck  does the most authentic crispy duck in Moscow. It also has a wide range of Japanese and Thai dishes on its menu. Cinemas:  No Sport Facilities:  There is a World Class gym in the Smolensky Passage shopping complex.

Kutuzovsky Prospekt

This broad avenue is flanked by Stalin-era buildings, including some gated apartment compounds run by the Foreign Ministry-associated GlavUpDK (Service for Diplomats and Foreigners). There are many modern developments behind the main thoroughfare and many parks. There is a big choice of supermarkets and shopping, including the Evropeisky mall with over 300 stores. The extensive Food Market at Dolgomirovsky is in the centre of the area. The street is named after the General who repelled Napoleon’s invasion of Russia; and features a panorama museum of the 1812 war.

Nearby is Victory Arch, dedicated to Kutozov’s victory, and beyond it the fabulous Victory Park dedicated to the Great Patriotic War (World War II). With a gold-domed Orthodox Church, a mosque and synagogue, there is a somber area on the hill overlooking the city. A walk with pools and fountains leads from the obelisk topped by a statue of Nike to the museum and the surrounding oaths – a summer favourite with roller blade enthusiasts.

International Schools:  No Supermarkets:  Evropeisky is at Kievskaya metro station and is such a big mall that you can’t miss it. After ice skating on the top floor and eating in the food court on the 4th floor you can do your grocery shopping in  Perekrostok  in the basement. There is also lots of parking. Restaurants:  Evropeisky has many restaurants, especially chains such as  Il Patio  and  Goodman Steak House . A short walk from Kievskaya metro station is one of Moscow’s few Thai restaurants.  Baan Thai  offers traditional Thai food which hasn’t been tempered too much for the Russian palate. Over the river from the Radisson Hotel is a large ship, this is  Viking . They had a fire in early 2010 and and have since refurbished in a ‘Viking’ style. The menu is international with European, Japanese and Caucasian cuisine all on offer. Cinemas:  There is a cinema on the 4th floor of Evropeisky, however, all showings are dubbed in Russian. Sport Facilities:  The  Igromax  center in Evropeisky has sports and games aimed at a young audience such as trampolining, bowling and rock climbing. Rock climbing is also available at  Skala City Climbing Gym , a customized indoor climbing center with a fully equipped gym, sauna and some restaurants.

Patriarshy Ponds

The elite area of central Moscow. You will find refined dining in restaurants on the ground floor of pre-revolutionary Czarist buildings, and modern developments around the Patriarch’s Pond made famous in Mikhail Bulkagov’s novel “Master & Margerita.” There are some Ministerial brick buildings in the area, but there is no post-Stalinist Soviet construction.

A pleasant park surrounds the pond and joggers make use of the path around the circumference. The European Medical Centre, the only western medical centre inside the Garden Ring, is located here. For supermarkets, go to the adjacent Garden Ring, but many neighborhood stores are in the immediate area. On the Garden Ring nearby, you will find the Bulgakov House museum and several theatres, including the Tchaikovsky Musical Theatre and the Satire Theatre.

International Schools:  No Supermarkets:  No, the closest are in the adjacent Garden Ring; there are small, neighborhood shops. Restaurants:  Attached to the Jewish cultural center on Nikitskaya is a fully kosher restaurant called  Chagall . The area also has an abundance of the usual chains:  Correa’s  for American/Italian cuisine,  Le Pain Quotidien , a Belgian cafe known for its pastries and coffee and  Mu Mu  with its cafeteria style Russian food. Cinemas:  No Sport Facilities:  At 15 Zoologicheskaya Street there is a center called  Me and My Child . This is for swimming and gymnastics for children under 6. Krasnopresnenskaya

This is a historic industrial area of Moscow, undergoing rapid redevelopment with the headline grabbing Moscow City skyscraper development at its edge and the Moscow International Trade Centre with offices, apartments and conference centre at its heart. It is also home to the huge International Expo Centre with an extensive program of exhibitions. You will find the full gamut of Moscow accommodation here from pre-revolutionary Czarist era buildings to modern developments.

There’s a choice of 24-hour supermarkets, neighborhood shops and a wide range of other stores. There is a big choice of restaurants from fast food to gourmet cuisine, and the occasional nightclub or two. The Barrikadnaya cinema complex shows foreign films. If you work in the International Trade Centre or Moscow City, this is a wonderful location to be in. Children will also enjoy the Moscow Zoo‘s extensive parkland, located here.

International Schools:  No Supermarkets:  The  Red October  candy shop is at Krasnopresnenskaya metro station. There is also the high end supermarket  Azbuka Vkusa  at 42 Balshaya Gruzinskaya Street and a rather small, Ramstore (Tel: 255-5412), at Krasnaya Presnya Street. Restaurants:   Gusar – 1812  is a restaurant inside the Orlov manor which used to belong to a distinguished noble family. The decor is elegant and well preserved and the food is extremely high quality Russian cuisine. If you’re on a budget avoid Gusar – 1812 and try the incredibly Russian  Yolki-Palki  – they have the kind of homey food a Russian grandmother would make. And, you can find many other restaurants between the two! Cinemas:  The Barrikadnaya cinema complex is at 15 Druginnikovskaya Street (Tel: 255-9057). The wonderful Moscow Museum of Cinema used to be upstairs but it has since been replaced with a strip club. Sport Facilities:  No

MOSCOW CITY – OUTSIDE THE GARDEN RING

Outside the Garden Ring, the availability of higher-grade, western-standard accommodations decreases, but there are still numerous new developments interspersed with Stalin-era and less modern buildings. Every region is split into fairly small administrative districts. Due to the high concentration of residents in high-rise apartment buildings, it remains, even after the end of social planning, viable economically for each district to contain multiple malls, grocery stores, restaurants, salons, dry cleaners, private dental clinics, and entertainment venues. Very few Russian-standard services are beyond walking distance, although you may need to travel outside of your district to find western-standard medical facilities, high-class sports facilities, and English-speaking service.

The greatest advantage of life outside the Garden Ring is that this is where most international schools, including British, American, German, French, and Finnish schools, are located. If you are looking for basic apartment accommodations, but proximity to an international school, you may want to begin your housing search by choosing a specific international school (See International Schools). For high-class accommodations near an international school, consider single family home compounds inside or outside the city boundaries. See below.

Pokrovsky Hills

Pokrovsky Hills is a gated community of 207 townhomes, located on the edge of the 270-acre Park Prokrovskoye-Glebovo, near the intersection of Leningradsky and Volokolamskoye highways. The compound lies 13 kilometers northwest of the Kremlin and it is easy to get into the city by car, or taking advantage of complimentary bus service to nearby metro stations. Homes are up to 340 square meters, with 3-5 bedrooms, and include garages. An international school, European medical center, and sports and recreation facilities are on-site. There is currently a long waiting list for housing here.

International Schools:  The  Anglo-American  school (walking distance) Supermarkets:  No Restaurants:  No Cinemas:  No Sport Facilities:  Sports facilities at the Anglo-American school are available for  Pokrovsky Hills  residents 19:00-22:00 on weekdays and 09:00-21:00. These include basketball and tennis courts, a gym, a swimming pool and an ice rink in winter.

Serebryany Bor

Moscow’s newest single family compound, Serebryany Bor, is already becoming popular with expatriates. It offers new construction homes up to 280 square meters, with up to 5 bedrooms, 3 baths, and 2 studies. Located in the northern part of Moscow, the complex is within easy driving distance of the center and 15 minutes away from an international school. Rents range from $13,800 – $14,100 monthly.

International Schools:  The  Anglo-American  School (15-minute drive) Supermarkets:  Due to its proximity to the center you can take your pick of supermarkets such as 7th Continent at Okhotny Ryad and  Azbuka Vkusa  at Beloruskaya. Restaurants:   Pomestie Park  is an unusual restaurant with a mixture of European and Oriental cuisine. It is set in a beautiful location and has ‘VIP’ rooms upstairs. The area also has a number of hotels which all have fine restaurants. Cinemas:  No Sport Facilities:  Cycling, water sports and volleyball are all possible due to Serebryany Bor’s proximity to both forests and beaches meaning you can take advantages of all the associated sports.

OUT-OF-TOWN COMPOUNDS

For those who prefer not live in the center of a bustling metropolis, there are a number of secure out of town options available. The following two are especially popular with expatriates.

Rosinka is one of the original residential compounds. Located outside the MKAD ring road, Rosinka consists of American-style housing units, in a clean suburban environment. There is an international school on the compound, as well as a kindergarden, mini market, restaurant and sports facilities on site. There’s a regular community bus service that operates during the day and evening.

International Schools:  The Rosinka Division of the  British International School . Supermarkets:  There is a mini-market within the complex. Restaurants:  The complex has 3 restaurants. An Italian, a Mexican and a family restaurant. They all provide a delivery service. Cinemas:  No Sport Facilities:  There is a 3 story community sports center which has a wide range of activities. These include a swimming pool, squash and tennis courts, a gym, a sauna and a solarium.

Moscow Country Club

The compound at Nakhabina, 30 kms Northwest of Moscow, incorporates a hotel, managed by Le Meridien, and The Moscow Country Club with its 18-hole Golf Course where the PGA tour Moscow Open is played every year. The territory includes several luxurious independent single family homes from 200 to 400 square meters that are offered on a long-term lease for one year or more. The Finnish-style wooden houses harmonize with the woodlands in the estate. The estate also offers smaller wooden “townhouse” type cottages of 140 square meters, and a 5-storey apartment building with 1-3 room apartments. Tenants may obtain seasonal rights to play golf without purchasing full Golf Club membership.

International Schools:  No Supermarkets:  No Restaurants:  The club has 7 restaurants in total, including a cozy winter garden and lakeside beach bar. Cinemas:  No Sport Facilities:  The range of sports available here is very extensive, from the usual activities such a tennis and a gym they also cater for niches such as archery, billiards and table tennis. In terms of outdoor activities they offer fishing, boating, climbing and volleyball among others.
