Act unveils 13-race late model tour schedule.

New England’s longest-tenured fendered touring series has found a formula that works, and plans to play it to perfection with a 13-race itinerary in 2024.

With a strong season in the rear-view mirror and a sense of stability on all fronts, the American-Canadian Tour had little to tweak for its 2024 campaign.

New England’s oldest continuous brand in fendered short track racing was the first touring group in the region to unveil its plans for the season ahead, with a pre-Thanksgiving news drop unveiling the bulk of the Vermont-based organization’s ACT Late Model Tour schedule.

And with a few key exceptions, the thirteen-race romp through the Northeast resembles the successful 2023 campaign that visited a diverse cluster of tracks throughout New England and the Canadian province of Quebec.

Twelve of those races are locked in at nine different tracks, all familiar territory for the crate-engined Late Models. Several weekends feature cross-promotion with the Pro All Stars Series, the region’s top Super Late Model touring organization, reflecting the close working relationship the two series have enjoyed since 2015.

Echoing the last few seasons, and perhaps ironic for a short track series, the biggest track in New England will open the 2024 ACT Tour schedule on Saturday, April 13. The Northeast Classic at New Hampshire Motor Speedway pays $5,500 to win and pairs ACT and PASS for the first of seven collaborative weekends featuring the two fendered tours. Modifieds, mini stocks and other series will join in on the festivities for a fourth year running.

ACT and PASS will pair up for the next event on the calendar as well, opening the season schedule for PASS’ home venue, Oxford Plains Speedway on April 28. The ACT home opener follows a week later, with Thunder Road International Speedbowl kicking off its 2024 season with the 26th running of the Community Bank N.A. 150 on the Barre, Vt. quarter-mile.

A one-week reprieve will allow teams to prepare for the first of two trips to Canada. Autodrome Chaudière, a long-time ACT partner track, hosts the Claude Leclerc 150 on May 18, paying tribute to ACT’s still-active octogenarian “Ironman.”

The historic ACT Spring Green returns to Massachusetts’ Seekonk Speedway on June 8. The 124-lap race is the first leg of this season’s Brookside Equipment Sales Southern New England Triple Crown program. Rain delayed last year’s Spring Green to the waning days of August, and the “Cement Palace” faithful will be hoping for a dry evening in June.

Star Speedway, which last hosted the Tour in 2019, welcomes ACT back for the Coastal 150 on June 22. The Coastal 150 is part of an ACT-PASS joint event, with the two series leasing the speedway and rounding out the schedule with PASS’ open-wheel support divisions. Surprisingly, the event is booked for the evening before New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s NASCAR Cup Series date, a night most tracks dare not to compete.

A month-long summer recess follows the Star race, leaving room for potential makeup events and allowing ACT officials to prepare for a long-anticipated appearance for the Superstar Racing Experience at Thunder Road. The Tour schedule resumes two days later with its second Canadian date of the year, the $10,000-to-win CAN-AM 200 at Autodrome Montmagny. The July 20 tilt marks the halfway point of the series schedule.

White Mountain Motorsports Park hosts two of the longest events on the ACT calendar, starting with the Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250 on August 3. The second-straight $10,000-to-win race on the schedule has built itself a thrilling legacy in its short history, with home-track favorite Jesse Switser scoring the upset win in 2023.

Another August recess leaves room for reschedulings and builds anticipation for the first repeated track of the season. The Oxford Plains 125 on August 24 anchors a busy day of racing to set the stage for the following day’s PASS-sanctioned $25,000-to-win Oxford 250.

Thunder Road welcomes the Tour back for its second appearance of 2024, the 46th NEFCU Labor Day Classic 200 on September 1. And after two off-weekends, ACT returns to WMMP for the 46th running of the Fall Foliage 200. With PASS present at Star Speedway for the Star Classic one week before, the Fall Foliage weekend moves a week later, allowing PASS to join ACT at the North Woodstock, N.H. oval for another doubleheader.

Next on the calendar is Thunder Road’s 62nd Vermont Milk Bowl on October 6, with rounds of qualifying to be held on Saturday, October 5. The Milk Bowl does not factor into the ACT Tour points race, but as with last year, attendance is required for ACT Tour “100%-ers” to meet certain incentives.

The final confirmed date on the schedule is a return to Thompson Speedway as part of the Connecticut speedplant’s Sunoco World Series. ACT and PASS will both be a part of Saturday’s schedule on October 12, after being absent from the event altogether last year. The Sunoco World Series 75 will also be the second leg of the aforementioned Southern New England Triple Crown.

But that leaves a third leg to be determined. And to that end, the promised 13th race to round out the calendar has yet to be announced.

New London-Waterford Speedbowl hosted the ACT season finale in 2022 and 2023. October’s title tilt, co-headlined with the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series, became a Sunday-evening show after Saturday’s planned race day was rained out. Despite the rainout and the late start time, a season-high 49 cars turned out to qualify. However, the beleaguered coastal Connecticut oval’s plans for 2024 are a wildcard.

A return to Seekonk Speedway, the site of the thrilling 2021 season finale, is a speculative possibility, if ACT wants to maintain the end-of-season pairing with the Monaco Modifieds on a Southern New England track. A practical option could be to end the season at Oxford’s PASS 400 Weekend, with both ACT and PASS crowning champions on the same afternoon.

Or a mid-season option could come to fruition, leaving ACT to crown its champion on the high banks of Thompson amid the fanfare of the World Series.

Thus far, seven of last year’s ten host tracks are back on the schedule. Stafford Motor Speedway, which hosted the Tour to great fanfare in 2023, and Lee USA Speedway were casualties of the Star and Thompson additions.

Stafford welcomed the ACT organization back for the first time since the 1980s, when NASCAR sanctioned the promotional efforts of founders Tom Curley and Ken Squier. Rain washed out the track’s Spring Sizzler weekend, forcing ACT’s return to a chilly May Friday night where a cold track stymied rookies and veterans alike. Lee, back on the schedule after a one-year-hiatus, wrapped up a hectic stretch of three features in two weeks. The race itself ran without a hitch, but had the shortest starting field of a Tour event all year.

Both tracks suffered through no fault of their own. But Stafford exists in its own world, and its own established program leaves limited room for outside additions. And a standalone ACT Tour date at Lee, a track that has embraced the Pro Stock as its premier fendered class, does not fit flawlessly into the ACT model.

Also absent from the 2024 calendar is a return to Hickory Motor Speedway. The legendary North Carolina oval has hosted preseason ACT Tour visits in 2021 and 2023, but a Facebook post indicated that team preferences kept the long road trip off the calendar. ACT’s unique platform has no equal in the Southeast, forcing ACT to rely on its own home-grown teams stretching their vacation time and budget to add another race weekend.

In a region where touring racing and weekly competition are sometimes at odds with one another, ACT has struck a balance that seems to work for Tour full-timers and weekly warriors alike. Eight teams made it to all thirteen Tour races in 2023, and 142 different drivers attempted at least one start, healthy numbers for any touring series nationwide.

That balance has a certain sameness to it from year to year. But for ACT, a touring program that trades on legacy and history, sameness is part of the pitch. Dates at Thunder Road and WMMP look back upon the foundations of the Tour itself. Events like the Spring Green and Fall Foliage have stories nearly fifty years in the making. The Canadian races recall a time when ACT skipped over the international border with ease from week to week. April’s visit to the “Magic Mile” is a celebration of the pinnacle of regional racing and the ultimate goal for so many local racers. Thompson reflects the current promotional efforts of ACT’s Cris Michaud and PASS’ Tom Mayberry.

For ACT, looking back is every bit as important as looking forward.

Daniel Holben photo

Waterbury, VT  — The American-Canadian Tour (ACT) has released the 2022 ACT Late Model Tour schedule. The series will once again hold 12 point-counting events throughout the Northeastern United States and Quebec with eight different tracks on the schedule.

For the second straight year, the point-counting season will begin at the New Hampshire Motorsport Speedway in Loudon, NH. The second annual $5,000-to-win Northeast Classic includes a practice day on Friday, April 15 with qualifying and features on Saturday, April 16. Sunday, April 17 is the rain date for the event.

The Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models have also been confirmed for the Northeast Classic. The rest of the event schedule will be announced at a later date.

On Sunday, May 1, ACT heads to Barre, VT’s Thunder Road for the 24 th  Community Bank N.A. 150. It’s the 62 nd  season opener at Thunder Road and the first of multiple ACT visits to the track in 2022. The Thunder Road Car Show and an optional practice day are on Saturday, April 30.

Sunday, May 22, the ACT Late Model Tour returns to Winchester, NH’s Monadnock Speedway. It will be the first ACT event at the track since 2003 after a planned 2021 event was cancelled. The Monadnock 150 will also feature the PASS Super Late Models and PASS Modifieds.

After a two-week hiatus, ACT makes the first of three visits to North Woodstock, NH’s White Mountain Motorsports Park on Saturday, June 11 for the 47 th  Spring Green presented by Caron Fabrication. Then on Saturday, June 25, ACT makes a long-awaited return to Canada for the $5,000-to-win Claude Leclerc 150 at Vallée-Jct., QC’s Autodrome Chaudiere. The planned Chaudiere events in 2020 and 2021 were cancelled due to border restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ACT continues its northern swing with a 125-lap event at Maine’s Oxford Plains Speedway on Sunday, July 10 with the PASS Super Late Models and PASS Modifieds. The second half of the season kicks off at White Mountain Motorsports on Saturday, July 30 with the $10,000-to-win Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250.

The Tour takes most of August off before a back-to-back leading into Labor Day weekend. Saturday, August 27, ACT is again part of the “Night Before the 250” at Oxford Plains Speedway, making Oxford the third track to host multiple events this year. The following Sunday, September 4, ACT is back at Thunder Road for the $5,000-to-win Optical Expressions Berlin Labor Day Classic 200. It’s the 44 th  edition of the legendary event.

The White Mountain trifecta concludes Saturday, September 17 with the $5,000-to-win Fall Foliage 200. It is part of a two-day Fall Foliage Weekend with the PASS Super Late Models racing on Sunday, September 18.

The 60 th  Northfield Savings Bank Vermont Milk Bowl is at Thunder Road on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2. Although the Milk Bowl will not count for Tour points, full-time teams must attempt to qualify for the Milk Bowl to maintain their “100%er” status and be eligible for season-ending point fund money.

ACT returns to Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Saturday, October 8 for the Sunoco World Series 75. It’s part of a Saturday card that also includes the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, PASS Super Late Models, Sunoco Modified Triple Crown Series, and assorted other local divisions and touring classes.

The 31 st  ACT Late Model Tour champion will again be crowned at Massachusetts’ Seekonk Speedway on Saturday, October 22 with the Haunted Hundred. It was the site for one of the most memorable finishes in ACT history this year when Ben Rowe edged D.J. Shaw to win both the race and the championship. The Tri-Track Open Modified Series is also on the program.

All ACT Tour races will be broadcast live via pay-per-view or live stream for the first time in series history. The Thunder Road events are on FloRacing while the balance of the ACT schedule is slated for Racing America powered by Speed51.TV. The Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250 will also be featured on MAVTV as part of the “Short Track America” TV series.

For the second straight year, there are no direct conflicts between the ACT Late Model Tour and PASS Super Late Model schedules. This will again allow drivers to run for the championship in both series if they choose, which Ben Rowe did in 2021 en route to the ACT title.

The 2022 ACT rules, license application, full-season entry form, and other information will be released over the coming weeks. Please check the ACT website and social media pages for further updates. The schedule announcements for ACT’s sanctioned tracks are expected within the next week.

ACT Tour Returns to Waterford Speedbowl for Final 2022 Event with Triple Crown on the Line

act tour points

Release from the American-Canadian Tour.

Photos by Erik Tavares .

Barre, VT — The time has come to round out the 2022 season for the American-Canadian Tour with a return to Connecticut’s New London-Waterford Speedbowl this Saturday, October 29th. The ACT Tour Shoreline 150 will join the championship events for the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models and the New England Supermodified Series (NESS) plus the New England Pro-4 Modifieds and the Speedbowl’s 3rd annual Northeast Street Stock Championship!

The Shoreline 150 harkens back to the original American-Canadian Tour event at the Waterford Speedbowl way back in 1982 where ‘Dynamite’ Dave Dion dominated two events in the 1980s before the Tour returned to the 3/8-mile in 2003. 2022 will mark just the eleventh event for the American-Canadian Tour at the coastal oval that is often labeled as a favorite for teams from across New England.

act tour points

While D.J. Shaw clinched the 2022 American-Canadian Tour Championship in intense fashion last Saturday at Seekonk Speedway, the Southern New England Triple Crown is still on the line. The $3,000 purse, to be spread among the top three at Series end, is tight after Seekonk with Thompson winner Tom Carey III leading Seekonk victor Shaw by a mere two points coming into Waterford on Saturday. 2022 ACT Rookie of the Year Alexendre Tardif, Jonathan Bouvrette and Seekonk Speedway standout Jacob ‘Rowdy’ Burns are among the other top stars searching for the Triple Crown bonus! One hard charging driver could walk away with $4,500 on Saturday should they take the $3,000 prize for winning the Shoreline 150 plus $1,500 for taking the Triple Crown championship!

act tour points

Along with the ACT touring regulars, special surprise entries have poured into the Barre office. Former Thunder Road Labor Day Classic champion Brooks Clark and 2022 White Mountain Motorsports Park (WMMP) Flying Tiger champion Tanner Woodard have thrown their hats in the ring. Also, Connecticut regular Corey Fanning is ready to try again after his American-Canadian Tour debut at Seekonk with multi-time WMMP track champion Quinny Welch stating he will make another trip south to a new speedway! Perhaps the biggest surprise is the return of former Maine State NASCAR champion Dave Farrington Jr. as he attempts to make his first start behind the wheel of an ACT car since his last outing at the inaugural Midsummer Classic 250 at WMMP back in 2018.

act tour points

While the ACT Tour season has been sewn up one race early, the Pro All Stars Series is coming down to the wire on their first trip to the Connecticut speedbowl. East Bridgewater, Massachusetts’ Ryan Kuhn currently leads Center Conway, New Hampshire’s Gabe Brown by 26 points in the PASS North standings along with holding a slim 3-point lead over fellow Bay Stater Eddie MacDonald in the PASS New England South standings. With two championships on the line, keep an eye on young Ryan Kuhn during the PASS debut at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

act tour points

The New England Supermodified Series will also wrap up their inaugural season at their New London-Waterford Speedbowl debut on Saturday. Currently Manchester, Connecticut’s Rob Summers leads open-wheel master Russ Wood by 16-points moving into the Speedbowl as these mighty winged beasts take on the 3/8-mile oval for the first time in more than five years.

To round out the Triple-Header program will be the 3rd annual Northeast Street Stock Championship and the New England Pro-4 Modifieds. Thirty-six different drivers have taken part in Open Street Stock events at the Speedbowl this summer with $2,000 on the line, Officials are expecting yet another big crowd of the 8-cylinder fan-favorites to invade the Speedbowl one final time in 2022. The Pro-4 Modifieds will be competing for the non-point Dan Meservey Sr. Memorial Race, an always exciting end-of-year tradition for the Mini Modified faithful!

act tour points

One more event remains on the American-Canadian Tour schedule with the return to New London-Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday, October 29th for the Shoreline 150! The huge end-of-season Triple Header includes the conclusion of the ACT Southern New England Triple Crown, championship events for the Pro All Stars Series and New England Supermodified Series plus the 3rd annual Northeast Street Stock Championship and the Dan Meservey Sr. Memorial for the New England Pro-4 Modifieds! Saturday’s Post Time is set for 1:00pm with full schedule and pricing is now available online at acttour.com.

ACT Entry List Tops 40 for 4th Annual Northeast Classic at NHMS

act tour points

Barre, VT  — As the 2024 American-Canadian Tour season comes steaming down the line, the first stop is New England’s lone super-speedway, the Magic Mile at New Hampshire Motor Speedway! The 4th annual Northeast Classic will serve as round one in an expansive 13-event season for the international ACT Tour and over the past days, weeks and months teams from across New England and Quebec have been frantically filing applications and entries in preparation for the exciting season opener at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Leading the way are several strong runners at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, including two-time and defending Northeast Classic victor Derek Gluchacki. The Kulwicki Driver Development Program finalist started his year with a strong 3rd-place run at the Thompson Speedway Icebreaker on Sunday and he’d love nothing more than to claim his third-in-a-row at the Magic Mile this weekend. Former ACT winners on the 1.058-mile oval Woody Pitkat, Brian Hoar and Joey Polewarczyk are also looking for another NHMS trophy to add to their already impressive mantles.

The larger group of entries includes the hard chargers that have come so very close, but have yet to nab the Loudon, New Hampshire win. New Salem, Massachusetts’-own Tom Carey III tops that list after claiming three consecutive runner-up finishes in the Northeast Classic, as he looks to join his father, Tom Carey, Jr. as a New Hampshire Motor Speedway winner. Likewise, two-time and defending ACT champion D.J. Shaw is looking to join father Dale as a NHMS winner after posting consistent top-10 finishes over the past three seasons.

Blainville, Quebec’s Jonathan Bouvrette tops the hardluck list after having a strong top-5 run destroyed in a final-lap dust-up with the wall. Bouvrette also leads a strong Canadian contingent that includes the ‘Iron Man’ of ACT, Claude Leclerc, Leclerc’s teammate Remi Perreault, former Serie ACT Quebec champion Dany Trepanier, young up-and-comer Zackary Fauteux and former Rookie of the Year Alexendre ‘Fireball’ Tardif who looks to return to the US-based Tour in 2024.

All the principal players from 2023 will also return, including championship runner-up Gabe Brown, Bryan Wall Jr. and Cam Huntress along with former top rookies Tanner Woodard and Erick Sands. A pair of Thunder Road champions in Stephen Donahue and Bobby Therrien will make the trip as will former ACT champion Ben Rowe and ACT victors Brandon Barker, Jesse Switser and Dillon Moltz. A Rookie of the Year battle between 2023 White Mountain champion Kasey Beattie, 2023 Thunder Road top rookie Kaiden Fisher and the Bay State pair of Cole Littlewood and Jeremy Sorel also begins on the Magic Mile this Saturday.

The American-Canadian Tour season begins in earnest with the 4th annual Northeast Classic at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday, April 14 with Saturday, April 13 set as Practice Day. Post Time is 11:00am on Sunday, for full schedule of events visit  http://www.acttour.com/northeast- classic . Adult General Admission tickets are set at $35 for Sunday’s showcase with Kids 12-6 for $10 and children 5 and under free! The full ACT Entry List is available on all American-Canadian Tour social media outlets.

ACT Tour Returns To New London-Waterford Speedbowl For Final 2022 Event With Triple Crown On The Line

act tour points

(Press Release from American-Canadian Tour)

act tour points

The time has come to round out the 2022 season for the American-Canadian Tour with a return to Connecticut’s New London-Waterford Speedbowl this Saturday, October 29th.

One more event remains on the American-Canadian Tour schedule with the return to New London-Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday, October 29th for the Shoreline 150! The huge end-of-season Triple Header includes the conclusion of the ACT Southern New England Triple Crown, championship events for the Pro All Stars Series and New England SupermodifiedSeries plus the 3rd annual Northeast Street Stock Championship and the Dan Meservey Sr. Memorial for the New England Pro-4 Modifieds! Saturday’s Post Time is set for 1:00pm with full schedule and pricing available online at  acttour.com .

Warning: this episode contains strong language.

Over the past week, students at dozens of universities held demonstrations, set up encampments and, at times, seized academic buildings. In response, administrators at many of those colleges decided to crack down and called in the local police to detain and arrest demonstrators.

As of Thursday, the police had arrested 2,000 people across more than 40 campuses, a situation so startling that President Biden could no longer ignore it.

Jonathan Wolfe, who has been covering the student protests for The Times, and Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent, discuss the history-making week.

A large crowd of people in a chaotic scene. Some are wearing police uniforms, other are wearing yellow vests and hard hats.

Background reading

As crews cleared the remnants of an encampment at U.C.L.A., students and faculty members wondered how the university could have handled protests over the war in Gaza so badly .

Biden denounced violence on campus , breaking his silence after a rash of arrests.
