Using Bookmarks is a great way to save and organize websites so you can easily visit them later. If Safari is enabled in iCloud Preferences on your Mac, Safari will use iCloud to synchronize your bookmarks across multiple devices. You can use iCloud.com to restore your bookmarks from an earlier version that was automatically archived in iCloud. In other words, this will let you recover your bookmarks you accidentally deleted.

Thanks for this info. So How do you MAKE a custom icon for your bookmark favorites toolbar in Safari?

Yes, I know about “favicons” and copy/past emojis from iChat or such into the toolbar from “Edit Bookmarks.” I have a bunch up there already. But if you have, for example, an organization with a logo, that makes more sense to show than having or abbreviating “Acme Plastics Composite and Recomposting Development Technologies Of the Puget Sound” or even “APCRCFTPS”… How about just the logo? That saves an enormous amount of real estate. How do you do that? No article even mentions anything about “customization” except how to move stuff around your toolbar. Thanks!

How to Manage Bookmarks and Favorites in Safari on Mac: A Complete Guide

Bookmarks and Favorites in Safari help you keep track of your favorite sites and visit them instantly. Here's how to master them.

Bookmarks and Favorites in Safari are easy ways to keep track of interesting sites you want to visit again later and your favorite sites you visit often. Bookmarks and Favorites have similar, but slightly different, purposes.

Use bookmarks to save links for sites you want to visit again later. Use Favorites to store links to a select few sites you visit often or every time you open Safari.

We'll explain how to manage your bookmarks and Favorites in Safari so you can make the best use of them and keep them organized.

Managing Bookmarks in Safari

Browser bookmarks can quickly get out of hand, especially if you bookmark a lot of sites. So it's a good idea to start organizing your bookmarks into folders early on to keep them under control. But it's never too late to get organized. It just might take a while if you have a large, unorganized collection of bookmarks.

How to Create Bookmark and Favorites Folders

Before adding a bookmark for a site, create a folder to put the bookmark in. First, click Show sidebar , or press Cmd + Control + 1 .

Make sure the Bookmarks button is selected (blue) at the top of the sidebar. Either right-click or Control -click anywhere in the sidebar and select New Folder .

Your Favorites are at the top of this sidebar and you can also use this method for creating Favorites folders.

Enter a name for the folder and press Enter .

To create a new folder in the Bookmarks editor, click New Folder in the upper-right corner of the page.

If you want to add multiple existing bookmarks to a new folder, select the bookmarks and hold down Option as you click New Folder . The selected bookmarks are added to the new folder that you can rename as mentioned above.

How to Add Bookmarks

To add a new bookmark and customize the name, description, and location, click the Share button in the upper-right corner of Safari. Select Add Bookmark .

This enters a default name for the bookmark based on the website title. But you can change the name if you want.

You can also add an optional description for the bookmark, which helps you remember why you bookmarked a page in the first place.

The first time you add a bookmark in Safari, the default folder is Favorites . We'll talk about adding Favorites later. For now, we're going to add the bookmark to the new folder we created above.

Select the folder from the Add this page to dropdown list and click Add . The folder you select becomes the default folder next time you add a bookmark.

To quickly add a bookmark, move your mouse over the address bar. Click and hold the plus icon on the left side of the box.

Select a bookmarks folder from the dropdown list. Safari adds a bookmark with the default name of the page to the selected folder. We'll show you how to edit a bookmark later.

You can also add the page to your Favorites by selecting Favorites or a Favorites folder.

How to Move and Copy Bookmarks and Folders

If you already have a bunch of bookmarks , you can organize them into folders or rearrange them.

Drag the bookmark to a folder or another location on the sidebar. To copy a bookmark instead of moving it, hold down the Option key while you drag it.

This method also works for rearranging Favorites.

How to Rename Bookmarks and Folders

To rename a bookmark or folder, right-click or Control -click on an item in the sidebar and select Rename . You can also force-click to rename. To do this, click and hold on the item until its text highlights.

If you're in the Bookmarks editor, select the bookmark or folder you want to rename, and press Enter .

Enter a new name or change the current one, and press Enter to accept your changes.

This also works for renaming Favorites.

How to Edit the URL for a Bookmark

Safari contains a Bookmarks editor that allows you to edit and delete your bookmarks and Favorites. Go to Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks .

Use the same method we described for renaming bookmarks to change the Address for a bookmark or Favorite. The editor also allows you to edit Website names, but you can't add bookmarks or Favorites in the editor.

How to Edit the Description for a Bookmark

You might want to add descriptions to your bookmarks, so you know why you saved the link to that page. If you forgot to do that for some of your existing bookmarks, you can edit their descriptions.

You can only edit the description for a bookmark on the sidebar, and only if the bookmark is in a folder. This is another good reason for putting bookmarks into folders.

To edit the description for a bookmark, double-click the folder containing the bookmark on the sidebar to expand it. Then, Control -click the bookmark you want to edit and select Edit Description .

The description is highlighted, allowing you to enter new text.

How to Delete Bookmarks

If your bookmarks are cluttered, you may want to delete old ones you don't use anymore.

On the sidebar, either right-click or Control -click the bookmark you want to delete and select Delete .

To delete multiple bookmarks, Cmd -click the bookmarks and press the Delete key.

You can also click and hold on the bookmark's name until it's highlighted. Then click the X to the right of the name.

Both methods also work for deleting Favorites.

How to Search Through Your Bookmarks

If you have a lot of bookmarks, you might find it hard to locate a certain one, even if you've organized them into folders. Thankfully, Safari allows you to search through your bookmarks.

Enter the text you want to search for in the search box at the top of the sidebar or in the upper-right corner of the Bookmarks editor. On the sidebar, you might have to scroll up to see the search box.

Results of the search display as you type. Click on the bookmark to open the page in the current tab.

To clear the search and go back to the full list of bookmarks, click the X button on the right side of the search box.

How to Import Bookmarks From Chrome or Firefox

Have you switched to Safari from Chrome or Firefox ? You can easily import your bookmarks from either browser into Safari.

Go to File > Import From > Google Chrome or File > Import From > Firefox . Check the Bookmarks box on the dialog box and click Import .

You can do this at any time, even if you've imported bookmarks already.

Safari is smart enough to know which bookmarks you've already imported from Chrome or Firefox. So if you import bookmarks again, you'll only get new ones you added to the other browsers. Or if you've deleted some bookmarks you imported, you'll get those back the next time you import.

The bookmarks and folders from Chrome or Firefox are imported at the root level on the sidebar. Use the methods we covered above to rename and rearrange bookmarks and folders, edit descriptions, or delete any imported bookmarks you don't want.

How to Import Bookmarks From an HTML File

You might want to import your bookmarks into a separate folder automatically, so you can keep them separate from the bookmarks you already had in Safari.

You can accomplish this by importing bookmarks from an HTML file, which you can export from Firefox or Chrome. See our guide to exporting Chrome bookmarks for info on this.

Go to File > Import From > Bookmarks HTML File . Then select the HTML file you want to import and click Import .

The imported bookmarks are put into a folder titled Imported with the current date.

Managing Favorites in Safari

The Favorites bar sits just below the address bar at the top of the Safari window. It provides quick access to sites you visit often.

You can only specify one web page as your homepage. But what if you want to open multiple pages every time you open Safari? You can add your favorite pages to your Favorites and have quick access to them when you open Safari.

How to Show the Favorites Bar

Safari stores favorites on the sidebar and in the Bookmarks editor, as we showed you earlier. You can also access them on the Favorites bar.

If you don't see the Favorites bar under the address bar, click Toggle the favorites bar on the toolbar, go to View > Show Favorites Bar , or press Cmd + Shift + B .

Only a certain number of sites will fit on the Favorites bar, so it's best to limit the number of pages you add to your Favorites.

How to View the Favorites Page on the Current Tab

If you want to view and access your Favorites as thumbnails, you can open the Favorites page on the current tab. Go to Bookmarks > Show Favorites .

If you don't see Show Favorites as the first option on the Bookmarks menu, you must make a change in Safari's settings . Go to Safari > Preferences . On the General screen, select Favorites from the New windows open with popup menu.

Your Favorites are available as thumbnails on the current tab.

How to View the Favorites Page on a New Tab

If you want access to Favorites page when you open a new tab, go to Safari > Preferences .

On the General screen, select Favorites from the New tabs open with popup menu. New tabs will now display the Favorites page, which includes Frequently Visited sites at the bottom. We'll show you how to hide the Frequently Visited sites section later.

How to View Favorites From the Smart Search Box

Use the Smart Search box, or address bar, as a quick way to access your Favorites page without leaving the current web page.

Click in the address bar to open the Favorites in a popup window. Then click the icon for the page you want to visit. The Favorites popup window goes away and the selected page opens on the current tab.

How to Change the Bookmarks Folder on the Favorites Page

By default, the Favorites page shows all your Favorites and the folders under Favorites. But you can change this to show only the Favorites in a Favorites folder or a folder of bookmarks.

Go to Safari > Preferences . On the General screen, select the folder you want to view from the Favorites shows popup menu.

The selected folder displays when you open the Favorites page on a new tab or from the Smart Search box.

How to Show/Hide Frequently Visited Sites in Favorites

If you don't want to see Frequently Visited sites at the bottom of the Favorites page, you can hide them.

Go to Bookmarks > Show Frequently Visited in Favorites . When the option does not have a check mark in front of it, you won't see the Frequently Visited sites on the Favorites page.

How to Open Your Favorites in Tabs When You Open Safari

If you visit the same pages every time you open Safari, you can add these pages to your Favorites and have them open in separate tabs when you open a new window.

To do this, set up your Favorites using the methods described earlier. Then go to Safari > Preferences .

On the General screen, select Tabs for Favorites in the New windows open with dropdown list.

Keep Track of Your Favorite Pages in Safari

Safari already offers great tools in the bookmarks and Favorites features. And they'll help you keep your favorite and important pages organized.

But if you want other options for managing your bookmarks, you can look through some great Safari extensions for bookmark management .

How to add websites to your Favorites list on a Mac's Safari browser, making them easily accessible at any moment

  • Knowing how to add websites to your "Favorites" on a Mac's Safari browser can help you navigate online quickly and easily.
  • Adding Favorites on a Mac is easy to do, as long as you know which site you want to add.
  • Once you add your Favorites, you can rearrange, edit, or delete them as needed, on any new tab.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

Bookmarking pages on Safari, the default browser for Mac computers , can help you navigate online with ease. But it's easy to go a little overboard and end up with so many that you have a difficult time finding the ones you need. That's when adding favorites can come in handy.

Another positive to using Favorites is that, on Safari, those show up in new tabs, making it extremely easy to access them. Here's what you need to know to add your Favorites on Mac and start taking advantage of this time-saving Safari tool.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Imac (from $1,099 at apple), how to add favorites on a mac using safari.

Your Favorites should consist of whichever the sites you find most useful. This could be the ones you use the most, or the ones you only use to pay a monthly bill (but want to keep at the front of your mind). It's all up to you.

1. Open Safari and navigate to the site you want to add to your Favorites.

2. In the top toolbar, select "Bookmarks" and then "Add bookmark" (Or press Command + D).

3. In the pop-up, make sure the dropdown says "Favorites" and then click "Add."

You'll be able to find those favorites within that same "Bookmarks" section of the top toolbar. They'll be in a folder at the bottom of the dropdown menu labeled "Favorites."

How to edit or delete favorites on a Mac using Safari

If you want to delete a site from your Favorites, simply open a new tab, find the icon for that specific Favorite, right click on the icon, and select "Delete." You can also rename the icon, like changing it from the site name to something more recognizable, in case that's easier.

You can also rearrange your Favorites by dragging the icon to wherever you want it to live on the page.

If Safari isn't your browser of choice, you should still be able to add bookmarks, if not Favorites. But the process will likely look different, so you may have to look around in the settings a little bit.

Like many applications, Safari lets you tweak its interface to suit your preferences. You can customize, hide, or show the toolbar, bookmarks bar, favorites bar, tab bar, and status bar. Configuring these Safari interface bars to suit the way you use the browser can save you time and effort.

The toolbar runs across the top of the Safari screen, where the address area is. Here's how to add and remove items to your liking.

From the View menu, select Customize Toolbar .

Select an item you want to add to the toolbar and drag it to the toolbar. Safari will automatically adjust the size of the address and search fields to make room for the new item(s). When you finish, choose Done .

Try adding iCloud Tabs to easily continue browsing sites right where you left off when using other Apple devices. Select Text Size to add the capability to change the size of text on a page quickly.

Alternatively, right-click in an open space in the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar .

You can adjust a couple of other things very quickly, too:

  • Rearrange icons in the toolbar by clicking and dragging them to a new location.
  • Delete an item from the toolbar by right-clicking it and selecting Remove Item from the pop-up menu.

If you get carried away with customizing the toolbar, and you're not happy with the result, it's easy to return to the default toolbar.

Click and drag the default toolbar set from the bottom of the window to the toolbar.

Click Done .

Safari Favorites Shortcuts

Apple changed the name of the bar from bookmarks to Favorites with the release of OS X Mavericks . No matter what you call the bar, it's a handy place to store links to favorite websites.

Hide or Show the Bookmarks or Favorites Bar

If you don't use the Favorites bar or want to gain a little screen real estate, you can close the bar. Simply select View > Hide Favorites Bar ( or Hide Favorites Bar , depending on the version of Safari you are using).

If you change your mind and decide you miss the bookmarks bar, go to the View menu and select Show Bookmarks Bar or Show Favorites bar.

In OS X Yosemite and later: Web page titles no longer appear in the toolbar area of the Safari browser if you have the tab bar hidden. Displaying the Tab Bar allows you to see the current page title, even if you don't use tabs.

Like other browsers, Safari supports tabbed browsing , which lets you have multiple pages open without having multiple browser windows open.

If you open a webpage in a new tab, Safari will automatically show the tab bar. If you want the tab bar always to be visible, even if you only have a single web page open, select View > Show Tab Bar .

To hide the tab bar, select View > Hide Tab Bar .

If you have more than one page open in a tab, you'll need to close the tabs before you can hide the tab bar. Click or tap the Close button (the little "X") in a tab to close it.

The status bar displays at the bottom of the Safari window. If you let your mouse hover over a link on a web page, the status bar will show the URL for that link, so you can see where you're going before you click the link. In most cases, this isn't important, but sometimes it's nice to check a URL before you go to the page, especially if the link is sending you to a different website.

  • To display the status bar, select View > Show Status Bar .
  • To hide the status bar, select View > Hide Status Bar .

Experiment with the Safari toolbar, favorites, tab, and status bars to find what works best for you. Generally, you'll find that having all the bars visible is most helpful, but if you need to maximize your viewing area, closing one or all is always an option.

Cannot Sync Safari Bookmarks from iCloud to iPhone or iPad since 17.4.1

I'm engaged with Apple via their escalations team but I'm at my whit's end here and hope SOMEONE in the ether has an answer or can help.

Background and high level summary: I cannot sync bookmarks from iCloud to my iPad mini 6 nor my iPhone 13 Pro. Both are running 17.4.1. Bookmarks are available and appear to be syncing without issue on my 14" M3 Max MacBook Pro (I can confirm this because if I delete one, it shows up under the Restore Data options on iCloud.com).

The long story: I bought an iPad mini 6 a couple weeks ago. It is the first iPad I've owned since the third version so when I set it up, I used a backup from my iPhone 13 Pro as a starting point. After the iCloud restore, I changed the device's name and it started performing its own backups from that point forward. All seemed well until about a week ago I noticed Safari was missing all of my bookmarks, synced via iCloud from both my 14" M3 Max MacBook Pro and my iPhone. I let it slide because I was busy and figured I would figure it out over the weekend.

Saturday morning rolls around and I cannot figure this out so I contact Apple support. In the normal process of troubleshooting, I signed out of iCloud on my iPhone and signed back in and poof, all of my bookmarks disappeared there as well. Since then I've been passed around by Apple Support, eventually landing with a Senior Level agent who is working with Apple's escalations team. They are suggesting I restore the OS on both devices but I'm in the middle of a big job and simply don't have time to do that. I also find it hard to believe that TWO different devices would exhibit the exact same issue and both would necessitate an OS restore. I did humor them and connect my iPad to my MacBook and reinstalled the 17.4.1 update but that didn't do anything. One thing that is weird to me is that on my iPad, if I try to 'Edit' the bookmarks, I'm met with this message:

Bookmarks are being synced. Please edit bookmarks once syncing has completed.

Strangely, this message even appears if I turn off the iCloud syncing for Safari. No idea where the iPad is trying to sync to in that case but I have had this message appear for 5 days now.

My question: Is anyone else having issues syncing bookmarks to their iPad / iPhone since installing 17.4.1? I'm half tempted to install the beta of 17.5 just to see if it resolves the issue but seeing as I'm in production on a job, I really can't take that chance. Also, I fully understand that this is nothing more than a minor inconvenience, especially since it seems to be syncing all of my browser history and frequently visited sites from all my devices, so I mostly have access to all the sites I go to anyways haha. It's just so weird and seems like such a simple thing that I am OBSESSED with trying to fix it.

How-To Geek

Apple books can do far more than you think (so use these 10 tips).

The stock iPhone reading app is packed with features.

Quick Links

  • Check Your Reading Progress
  • Set Reading Goals
  • Customize the App's Appearance
  • Jump to a Page
  • Add Bookmarks (Not Just One)
  • Highlight Text and Take Notes
  • Keep Your Books Synced Across All Your Devices
  • Read and Annotate PDFs
  • Create a Wish List of Books You Want to Read
  • Read Without Being Disturbed

Apple Books lets you buy, rent, and read books, listen to audiobooks (in supported regions), or import and read documents downloaded from other sources. But there's a lot more you can do in the app than you're probably aware of, so let's dive in and take a look.

1 Check Your Reading Progress

Being aware of your reading progress lets you know how far you've read a book and may motivate you to read more. The Books app makes it pretty easy to check your reading progress.

On your iPhone or iPad, open the book and go to the page you're reading currently. Tap anywhere in the center of the page.

You'll now see two numbers; one at the top and the other at the bottom of the page.

The top number indicates the number of pages left in the current chapter. Meanwhile, the bottom number tells how many pages (out of the total pages in the book) you've read so far.

2 Set Reading Goals

If you haven't been reading much lately, the Reading Goals feature can help you get back on track. Once enabled, it tells you how many minutes you spend reading each day and the number of books and audiobooks you finish each year.

To turn on Reading Goals, open "Settings" on your iPhone or iPad and select "Books."

Scroll down to the "Reading Goals" section and toggle on the switch next to "Reading Goals."

Flip the switch for "Include PDFs" to also include the time you spend reading PDFs towards your reading goals.

Once you resume reading regularly and want to check your progress, open the Books app and go to the "Home" tab. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and you'll see a section called "Reading Goals" with all your reading stats.

You can also adjust your reading goal from here. To do this, tap on "Today's Reading" and hit the "Adjust Goal" button.

Set the time you want to spend reading books each day on the overlay screen. Hit "Done" to save.

Similarly, you can scroll down further to the "Books Read This Year" section to see how many books you've finished this year.

To modify the goal, hit the "Adjust Goal" button. Then, set the number of books you want to read each year and hit "Done" to set this as your new yearly reading goal.

3 Customize the App's Appearance

Apple offers several customization options in the Books app to help you customize your reading experience. You can use these options to change everything from fonts and themes to page-turn animations and line spacing, among other things.

To access them, go to the Books app, open a book, and tap anywhere on the page and then hit the menu button at the bottom-right of the page.

Select "Themes & Settings."

Now you can change a bunch of things from the "Themes & Settings" overlay screen, including the font size, font type, theme, and page turn animations.

In addition, you can tap on "Customize" at the bottom of the page to open the theme customizer. From here, you can adjust other aspects of the page, such as line spacing, character spacing, and word spacing, among other things, as per your preference.

4 Jump to a Page

Using the table of contents is one way to navigate a book. However, if it's unavailable, or you want to jump to a page in a book or PDF directly, you can simply use built-in search functionality to find the page.

To do this, open the book and tap on the menu button in the lower right-hand corner. Select "Search Book".

Now, type a number, and tap on the result to open that page.

You can also use this search feature to look up something specific in a book. Simply type the text you want to find, and the app will show all the instances of it in the book.

Tap on one to jump in and read.

5 Add Bookmarks (Not Just One)

When you stumble upon something interesting in a book, adding a bookmark will save it, so you can revisit it later. To bookmark a page in Apple Books, tap the menu button in the bottom-right corner and hit the bookmark button.

You'll see a bookmark icon in the bottom-right corner of the page, indicating it's bookmarked. The Books app keeps all your bookmarks for a book in one place. You can access them by tapping the menu button and going into "Bookmarks & Highlights."

When you want to remove a bookmark, it's easy. Tap the bookmark icon to bring up the menu, and then hit the bookmark button again.

6 Highlight Text and Take Notes

In addition to bookmarking a page, the Books app also lets you highlight text snippets in a book you find interesting or may need later. You can even add a personal note to something you highlighted to include context or an important detail.

To highlight text in Apple Books, tap and hold on a word, and when it shows the grab points, move them to adjust your selection.

Next, tap the "Highlight" button that appears in the context menu above the text.

Then, choose a color you'd like to use for the highlight. Alternatively, you can underline the text by tapping on the "U" button.

If you want to add a note to the highlight, tap on the highlighted text and select "Add Note" from the menu.

Start typing your note and hit "Done." Once you add a note to a highlight, you'll see a square box next to the text. Tap on this box to view the note.

Alternatively, if you have multiple notes on a page, you can view them in one place. Tap the menu button in the bottom-right corner of the page and select "Bookmarks & Highlights." Switch to the "Highlights" tab, and you'll see all your highlights and notes for that book on this page.

7 Keep Your Books Synced Across All Your Devices

One of the best features of the Books app is cross-device sync, which syncs your content across all your Apple devices. It allows you to pick up the book or audiobook you're reading or listening to on one device and continue reading or listening to it on another.

In addition to syncing reading progress, Apple Books also syncs and gives you access to all of your bookmarks, highlights, and notes, with the ability to create new ones across all your devices.

To enable sync in Apple Books, open the "Settings" app on your iPhone or iPad and tap on your name at the top of the screen.

Select "iCloud."

Under "Apps Using iCloud," tap on "Show All."

Here, make sure the toggle next to "Books" is on.

Lastly, tap on "iCloud Drive" and enable it if it isn't already enabled.

8 Read and Annotate PDFs

Alongside books in its library, Apple also lets you read PDFs downloaded from other sources in Apple Books. So, if you've downloaded a document or a book from somewhere else on your Apple device, you can import it straight into Books and start reading it. Be aware that you may not experience the same reading experience, and the app may not show you the same features it does with the native eBook experience.

To import a PDF into Apple Books, go to the app containing the PDF document. Open the PDF, click the Share button. This includes any PDFs that you have opened in Safari.

Then, select "Books" from the Share Sheet.

This will open the PDF in the Apple Books app. You can now read the PDF or annotate it using the Markup tools.

9 Create a Wish List of Books You Want to Read

If you're always on the lookout for new books, the Books app offers a nifty feature called Want to Buy that lets you create a wishlist of all the books you'd want to read. The app syncs your wishlist across all devices, so you can add new items to your wishlist from any of your devices.

Adding a book to your wishlist is easy. When you find an interesting read while exploring books in the "Book Store" tab on the Apple Books app, tap on the book to expand its details. Then, hit the "Want to Read" button below the "Get" button to add the book to your wishlist.

When you want to access your wishlist, head to the "Home" tab. Find the "Want to Read" section and tap on it. Here, you'll see all the books you've saved and can check their samples or purchase them.

Since the Books store is so exhaustive, you can use this feature to keep track of books whether or not you intend to read them digitally (or on the Apple Books service).

10 Read Without Being Disturbed

App notifications can be annoying, especially when you're trying to concentrate. Thankfully, there's a workaround to silence your iPhone or iPad while reading that you can use to read books without interruptions. It involves using the Focus feature, which lets you limit or turn off notifications to reduce interruptions (while letting the really important things through, like phone calls from family members).

The above tips will help you use Apple Books like a pro and elevate your reading experience on your iPhone or iPad. As you spend more time on the app, you'll explore more such tips and functionalities and be able to get more out of it.

6 Tips to Improve Your Safari Experience on iPhone

A ccessing the internet on an iPhone is made simple by Safari, Apple's native web browser; it does a great job of getting you started, but there are several other features that you can leverage to enhance your user experience.

Below, we'll list some valuable tips you can use to get the most out of Safari on your iPhone. So, let's get started.

1. Modify the Start Page

The start page is the first element you usually run into when launching Safari—it's the default screen if you've not used the browser before or didn't leave any tabs open after your last session. And the first step you can take in improving your Safari experience is to customize it.

Customizing the start page involves changing the background image and choosing the sections (listed below) you want the app to show. We've added descriptions to help you understand a little more about each section.

  • Favorites : This section will show all your favorite websites and bookmarks which have been added to the Favorites section on your iPhone.
  • Frequently Visited : This is a collection of searches and websites you've frequented in recent months. The information is said to be a mix from all your Apple devices if you've enabled iCloud.
  • Shared with You : It works by finding links, images, music, and more, sent within the Messages app, and brings them up in relevant applications. For example, if someone texted you a link via iMessage, you'll find it in this section of the start page.
  • Privacy Report : This section surfaces information on the trackers used by websites you've visited in the last 30 days and showcases when your iPhone—and other Apple devices—prevented them from profiling you.
  • Siri Suggestions : You can find website suggestions based on your recent browsing history, bookmarks, and open tabs within this section if you choose to use them.
  • Reading List : You can find the three latest additions to your Reading List in this section, with a Show All button available in case you want to view the other articles you've added to your read later list.
  • iCloud Tabs : This feature showcases up to four most recent tabs open on each Apple device you own with iCloud enabled for Safari.

To begin customizing your Safari's start page, follow the steps listed below:

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the Safari start page and tap Edit.
  • Now, enable the desired sections using the toggles or reorder them by pressing (and dragging) the three horizontal lines.

If you want to experience Apple's Continuity feature , toggle on Use Start Page on All Devices at the top of the edit menu. This will ensure your start page is in sync across all devices connected to your iCloud account.

2. Create Tab Groups in Safari

The next step in improving Safari on iPhone is to create and use Tab Groups . The feature lets you bring order and control to tabs by allowing you to group similar ones—or those you often use together—into folders. Ideally, you can use the feature to separate search results and websites related to work from those you open during casual browsing.

To create a Tab Group, follow the steps listed below:

  • View all your tabs by tapping the Tab button in the bottom-right corner.
  • Now, tap the text box at the bottom of the screen—it mentions the number of tabs open.
  • In the menu that appears, tap New Empty Tab Group or the second option, New Tab Group with X Tabs .
  • Name the Tab Group according to your liking and hit Save .

The X in the second option will vary based on the number of tabs open when creating a Tab Group.

3. Use Safari Extensions

Like Chrome, you can install Safari extensions to improve your browsing experience. For those unaware, these are applications built for web browsers that bring additional functionality and make your life easier.

For example, you can install applications that scour the web for coupon codes and bring them up when you're making a purchase or add ones that help edit written content to ensure you aren't making silly errors.

Adding extensions to Safari on an iPhone is a bit different compared to installing and removing extensions in Safari on a Mac . To do this, follow the steps listed below:

  • Go to Settings > Safari on your iOS device.
  • On the next screen, find Extensions under the General subsection and tap on it.
  • You'll now see a list of extensions available. In case you see no options, tap More Extensions to visit the Safari Extensions store.

You may sometimes see options without having installed an extension before; these are present due to an application—that offers Safari extensions—installed on your iPhone from before.

Once you've installed an extension, activate it in Settings using the same steps above and then do the following:

  • Open Safari and tap the AA button in the address bar.
  • Now, tap Manage Extensions and select the extension you want to activate.

4. Choose Websites to Automatically Use Reader

Reader in Safari is a nifty add-on that lets you read content from a website with minimal distractions and no ads. It makes the experience quite simple and offers options like changing the page color, font, and font size.

Activating Reader is quite simple; tap the AA button in the address bar when you're on a supported webpage and choose Show Reader . However, if you frequently visit a specific website, you can configure Safari to load all its webpages in Reader. Here's what you need to do:

  • Open the desired website and tap the AA button.
  • In the context menu that appears, tap Website Settings .
  • Now, toggle on Use Reader Automatically . Each supported webpage will now open in Reader, making it easier to read the content.

5. Set Tabs to Open in Background

Despite it being easy to access AI tools like ChatGPT on mobile for learning about things, if you prefer getting deep into the weeds when doing research, you may want to view many of the following webpages in new tabs.

By default, opening a new tab via a hyperlink will leave the old tab behind and move you to the new tab. While this behavior is fine, it can feel like a chore if you'd like to open multiple results from a search page.

Fortunately, you can change this behavior. Here's what you need to do:

  • Open the Settings app, and scroll down to the Safari option.
  • On this page, under the Tabs subsection, tap on Open Links .
  • Now, choose In Background .

6. Configure Safari to Automatically Close Tabs

Lastly, while the ability to open many tabs in Safari is a boon, knowing ways to organize your browser and keeping it clutter-free can help you focus better and increase productivity. And keeping only a few tabs open can be a part of this regime.

Safari on iPhone also helps with this, with the ability to automatically close tabs after a set period of time; we've detailed the steps to activate the feature below:

  • On this page, under the Tabs subsection, tap on Close Tabs .
  • Now, choose from the available options: After One Day , After One Week , or After One Month .

Become a Safari Power User With These Changes

Each customization method listed above will help improve your Safari experience, be it with a new background image that makes the app feel more personal or a setting that keeps it clutter-free.

Overall, Safari is an excellent browser that can be made even better for power users with a few changes. And some of Apple's exclusive features make a strong case for the app, especially if you're a Mac user.

How to organize Safari tabs using tab groups in iPadOS 17

AppleInsider

Safari tab groups have been in iPadOS for several years, and can really help you organize pages you've browsed. Here's how to use them in iPadOS 17 .

add bookmark safari mac

Tabs in Safari in iOS and iPadOS allow you to open multiple web pages at once - with each page in a separate tab. This makes reading quicker. A few years ago, Apple added Tab Groups to Safari in iOS and iPadOS, which allows you to group tabs by category into groups with names you define. Each tab group has a name you give it, and you can add multiple web pages in tabs to each group. Tab groups in iPadOS provide convenience by keeping multiple open tabs organized and under control. In iPadOS 17, Apple lets you use tab groups in multiple ways. You can:

  • Create new tab groups
  • Add new web pages or favorites to existing groups
  • Switch between tab groups in the sidebar
  • View tab groups in the Start Page pane
  • Search tabs

Apple calls groups in the Favorites sidebar "Tab Group Favorites".

Getting started with tabs in Safari on iPadOS

To use tab groups in Safari for iPadOS, you'll first want to open one or more web page tabs in Safari. You can do this by tapping the + button at the top right corner of Safari, by opening an existing bookmark from the Safari Favorites page, or by opening an existing Start Page or Home Screen shortcut you've saved which points to a web page. Or you can click the + button and then type or paste in a web URL at the top of the Safari window. Once you have multiple web page tabs open in Safari, you're ready to create tab groups or add pages to existing tab groups.

Creating tab groups in Safari

To create a new tab group in Safari on iPadOS, first tap the sidebar icon in the upper-left corner, then tap the button to the right with the + in it:

Tap the sidebar icon (left), then tap the

This presents a menu containing a single item; New Empty Tab Group . After you tap it, note the "Done" button on the right.

Tap

Next, you'll be prompted to enter a name for the new tab group, so add a name and then tap Save . This adds a new tab group with the new name in the sidebar on the left:

Give the new tab group a name.

At this point, you now have a new tab group which automatically contains all the tabs you had open when you created the new tab group. You can repeat this process as many times as you like - creating multiple tab groups, each containing a different set of open tabs. To switch between tab groups, simply tap one of the named tab groups from the list in the sidebar on the left. This switches between sets of open web page tabs all at once. You can hide and show the sidebar at will by tapping the icon in the upper left corner of Safari repeatedly.

Tab group favorites in the Start Page

After creating tab groups, if you now go to any Start Page in Safari by tapping the + button in Safari's upper right corner, then tap any tab group in the sidebar, you'll now see a tab group favorites section with the same name at the top of the Start Page above all individual favorites. If you tap other tab groups in the sidebar, the Start Page's tab group favorites section changes to the name of the tab group and displays a large + button in it. If you tap the large + button, you'll be presented with a Bookmarks menu containing several items, one of which is Tab Group Favorites :

Bookmarks with Tab Group Favorites.

If you tap this menu item, a submenu will be displayed showing all tab groups by name. This allows you to select any bookmarked tab in a tab group and add it to the tab group you started with. This can be a bit confusing at first, but once you've done it a few times, you'll get the hang of it.

Select any bookmarked tab from any tab group from the submenu to add it to the current tab group.

At the end of each of the displayed tab group submenus in the Bookmarks sheet above is a list of all currently bookmarked tabs in each tab group. Selecting any one bookmark from the Bookmarks sheet will add it back to the tab group pane on the Start Page where you began (next to the original large + button you tapped. One important thing to note here is that merely having tabs open in any tab group is different from bookmarking them in a tab group.

Moving, pinning, closing, and arranging tabs in tab groups

Back in Safari's main window, if you press and hold on any open tab, you'll get a small popover menu that contains several items:

  • Move to Tab Group
  • Arrange Tabs By
  • Close Other Tabs

Press and hold a web page tab to get the popover menu.

Selecting Pin Tab moves the tab to the far left of Safari's window, pins it there, and adds a thumbtack icon to the tab. This lets you know that the tab can't be moved until you unpin it. Selecting Move to Tab Group presents several options:

  • New Tab Group
  • Names of all existing tab groups

From this submenu you can either create a new tab group like you did above, send the tab to the Start Page, or move it to any existing tab group by name. Selecting any tab group name from the submenu closes the pressed tab and sends it to that tab group.

Use the submenu to move tabs to other groups, arrange, or close them.

If you select Arrange Tabs By it displays a submenu with two options: Arrange Tabs by Title and Arrange Tabs by Website Arranging tabs by title sorts and repositions the tabs alphabetically, while arranging tabs by website reorders them so all tabs from each site are ordered next to each other. If you select Close Tab it simply closes the pressed tab taking no further action. If you select Close Other Tabs it closes all the other open tabs in the current tab group except the one that was pressed.

Adding tabs to tab groups Favorites manually

Once you have all your tabs and tab groups set up the way you like, you can also add any existing tab to any tab group Favorites list. To do so, single-tap any existing tab, then tap the share sheet icon in the upper right corner of Safari's window. This presents a popover with several items for adding the tab to Favorites, but now one of them is Add to "Name" Favorites where "Name" is the currently selected tab group in the sidebar. Selecting this menu item adds the current tab to the currently selected tab group Favorites list. The next time you tap that tab group in the sidebar, the Favorited tab will show up in the tab group's Favorites section on the Start Page.

Tap the Share Sheet icon to add an existing tab into a tab group's Favorites.

This can be a little confusing - you're essentially bookmarking the current tab into the Start Page, but only for the tab group indicated in the share sheet's Favorites popover menu.

Searching tabs

You can also search tabs for text you want to find. To do so, tap the small icon with two squares in the upper right corner of Safari's window. This opens the tabs search pane and shrinks all open tabs into thumbnails. Any pinned tabs appear as page titles only with a thumbtack icon at the top of the pane:

Searching tabs.

Now you can type text into the search box at the top of the pane to search all open tabs. Tap Cancel , then Done to return to Safari's main window.

Removing tab groups

To remove a tab group from your iPad or iPhone , press and hold a tab group by name in the sidebar, then select Delete from the popover menu. You can also rename tab groups and show all tabs in a tab group in the sidebar from the popover. The addition of tab groups in Safari makes opening and managing large sets of web pages easy. By organizing open pages by tab groups, and using tab group favorites, it's easy to switch between different sets of data with a few taps. For example, you might have one tab group for work, one for personal use, family, entertainment, or research topics. When you want to switch contexts, just select a tab group to return to all the tabs you had open for that topic. Tab groups make Safari and surfing the web on iOS and iPadOS devices much faster and more enjoyable. Read on AppleInsider
