“There are plenty of reasons to go to Mozambique. With its endlessly long, unspoiled Indian Ocean coastline, Mozambique is the ultimate beach destination. You’ll have the opportunity to dive or snorkel with shoals of colorful fish zigzagging around the beautiful coral reefs. Or you can take a boat trip further offshore to get close to dolphins and whales. Real adventure enthusiasts might want to swim with whale sharks. Meeting the local Mozambicans is easy; these laid-back people love to welcome visitors to their piece of paradise. Go back in time with them on a traditional dhow cruise, check out the art deco Portuguese-influenced architecture, or dance the night away in one of Maputo’s edgy nightclubs. Whatever rocks your boat, don’t walk away without tasting the many tantalizing Mozambican dishes, especially the famous LM prawns.”

Where should I go in Mozambique?

“There is no shortage of stunning beaches in Mozambique. The most popular resort towns are in the south of the country. Ponta do Ouro, located at the southernmost extremity of Mozambique, is usually visited from South Africa and is a great place for diving and fishing. Nearby Maputo Special Reserve is a sanctuary for an estimated 450 to 500 coastal elephants. Nature-lovers will enjoy the bush-and-beach combo in a pristine protected environment. Other resort towns further north include Xai-Xai, Bilene, Tofo and Vilankulo. The latter is perhaps the biggest tourist hub in Mozambique. You’ll find lots of activities available here, including boat trips to the nearby Bazaruto Archipelago where you’ll enjoy some of the best snorkeling and diving reefs in the country. While you can visit these reefs from mainland Mozambique, staying on one of the archipelago’s islands is a more exclusive option. With several luxury lodges to choose from, the islands are ideal for a romantic getaway. More remote and less developed is the string of islands in the north, known as Quirimbas Archipelago. As is the case further south, the main attractions are the beaches and the marine wildlife, such as whales, dolphins, turtles, dugongs and a magnificent coral reef with associated fish. Aside from these natural wonders, you’ll get a taste of the country’s turbulent history with historical landmarks, such as the old Portuguese fort on Ibo Island.”

Can I extend my African safari with a trip to Mozambique?

“Although Mozambique has plenty to offer for a stand-alone holiday, it is also the perfect companion to a safari in East or southern Africa. It is very easy to add some days in Mozambique to a South Africa safari, for example. Connections are usually good from Kenya and Tanzania, though you might need an extra flight hop. There are few beaches in East and southern Africa that can really compete with the islands of Mozambique as idyllic destinations. The water is always warm, the reefs protect the shore from big waves, the marine life is incredibly varied and the islands are totally unspoiled. It is no surprise that you’ll find some of the most exquisite lodges here. They cater to families, newlyweds, adventure enthusiasts and people wanting to just get away from it all for a couple of days.”

Which parks should I visit on a Mozambique safari?

“While Mozambique is mostly rated as a beach destination, it has some parks and reserves worth visiting too. None of these parks competes with the top safari destinations in the likes of Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. However, if you’re looking for a bit of an off-the-beaten-track adventure, they have a lot to offer. Gorongosa National Park, located at the southern end of the Rift Valley, incorporates a great variety of landscapes and habitats, including lakes, savannahs, woodland, mountains and rainforest. You’re likely to see elephants and plenty of antelope species here, and lions are making a strong comeback too. Limpopo, Banhine and Zinave National Parks all form part of Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a vast cross-border conservation initiative that also incorporates Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and South Africa’s world-famous Kruger National Park. Limpopo NP is the most regularly visited of Mozambique’s inland parks, but most of this traffic is merely in transit between Kruger and the Mozambican coast. And while Limpopo is home to all of the Big Five, wildlife densities are very low, partly due to a lack of permanent water. The recently rehabilitated Zinave NP, by contrast, is an off-the-beaten gem where you stand a good chance of spotting elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo and white rhino, along with a wide variety of antelope. Predators that prowl Zinave include lion and leopard but densities are low and sightings very rare. Set along the far south coast of Mozambique, Maputo National Park is home to elephant, zebra, hippo and several species of antelope. This scenic park now incorporates several oceanfront lodges that offer a truly special bush-and-beach experience.”

What is the best time of the year for a holiday in Mozambique and/or a Mozambique safari?

“The tropical climate of Mozambique makes it suitable as a beach destination throughout the year. However, the months of December to March can be very wet and torrential rains are not uncommon over this period. Underwater visibility for snorkeling and diving is best from April to June and from September to November, when the sea tends to be calm. The dry months from July to October are best for wildlife viewing. At this time animals congregate around lakes and rivers and the thinning bush makes spotting easier.”

How much will this tour cost?

“There are several variables determining the price of a Mozambique tour. However, as a guideline, you can expect a tour package to cost around US$300 to US$500 per person per day. The level of accommodation is the biggest factor. Most beach resorts fall in the mid-range to luxury span, but there are a few budget options as well. If you’re looking for a tour visiting several places in the country, you might need some internal flights, which will add to the price. When available, a group tour might be more cost-effective than a private tour. Taking all these variables into account makes for a wide range of prices.”

The question of when to travel to Mozambique depends on many things including your interests, exactly where you want to visit and why you're going.

The country broadly follows South Africa’s weather pattern, with the rains falling largely between December and March .

This does vary a little between the north and south of the country, with the rains lasting a few weeks longer in the north than the south, but the pattern is the same. Humidity can be uncomfortably high during this period.

By around April or May the rains subside, the sun comes out and the humidity drops – better weather spreads gradually from the south to the north.

June to October is the dry season, with often perfect tropical weather: clear skies, plenty of sun and almost no rain. This is the best time for most people to visit Mozambique. Although still tropical, June, July and August are Mozambique's coolest months; you'll need a light duvet at night, even though the temperature reaches over 30°C by day. During September and October it remains dry as daytime temperatures climb, though it cools down a lot at night.

November is a less predictable month of transition. Sometimes the rains start, although many days remain sunny and hot. The rains generally start earlier in the north of the country.

Mozambique has become a favorite beach and island holiday destination. The warm, crystal blue water of the Indian Ocean makes it ideal for big game fishing, safaris, scuba diving and romantic getaways.

Two clusters of islands on the horizon include the Bazaruto Archipelago and the Quirimbas Archipelago – perfect for slowing down and enjoying the easy pace of island life, fresh seafood and sunset cruises aboard a traditional Dhow.

Ponta do Ouro

Ponta do Ouro is a town in the extreme south of Mozambique, lying on the Mozambique Channel south of Maputo and just north of the border with South Africa. It is known for its beach, for its dolphins and for its offshore diving and deep-sea fishing. Must see attractions include a small shop called Ponki which sells authentic hand-woven kikois at affordable prices and the bustling downtown market. Fresh seafood is displayed in colorful cooler boxes and you can buy enormous crayfish, lobsters, prawns, and fish.

Tofo is a coastal town in southeastern Mozambique, near the town of Inhambane. It's known for the curved Tofo Beach and nearby coral reefs which attract sea life. Sea turtles and huge manta rays circle at Manta Reef. Tofo is one of the best destinations for divers to see whale sharks and is a surfers paradise. Discover the small African street market where you can buy fresh produce and small odds and ends. If you are an angler, go fishing for King Mackerel, Dorado, Wahoo, Bonito and Yellowfin Tuna during peak season from June to August. Or hire a horse from the stables and ride along the beach in warm sea breezes. Alternatively laze on the beach all day swimming, tanning and reading long novels.

Bazaruto Archipelago

The Bazaruto Archipelago consists of six idyllic islands lying off the Mozambique coastal town of Vilankulo (Vilanculos): Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina (Paradise Island), Bangue and Pansy Shell Island. Benguerra Island in Mozambique is the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, which broke away from the mainland thousands of years ago. Gorongosa National Park is a preserved area in the Great Rift Valley of central Mozambique and has been the featured park for several National Geographic documentaries. Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

Wildlife & Wilderness: Gorongosa Safari

Known in Mozambique as the ‘Park for Peace’, Gorongosa is one of Africa’s last true wild places with the greatest wildlife restoration story. When the war ended in 1992, the landscape was devastated and more than 90% of Gorongosa’s large mammals had disappeared. Efforts were made to rehabilitate Gorongosa after the war but it wasn’t until 2004, when American philanthropist Greg Carr partnered with the Mozambican government to restore the park, that it started coming back to life. The Gorongosa Restoration Project has worked with the Government of Mozambique for the past 20 years to restore wildlife to the Gorongosa National Park, in what is perhaps the greatest restoration success in Africa.

• Memorable accommodations : Many properties in Mozambique err on the side of barefoot or eco-luxury and are often open to the elements. Even five-star luxury lodges may be without air-conditioning. This is not universally true and there are properties that can meet the needs of travelers looking for polished luxury rooms, but eco-luxury is the general trend.
• Mozambique game viewing:  If your priority is game viewing, the reserves in Mozambique may not quite meet your needs. They cannot compete with parks in  Kenya ,  Tanzania ,  Botswana  or  South Africa  for density of game and ease of sightings. Mozambique’s advantage is that there is a low density of vehicles so it will feel very remote. 
• Getting around Mozambique:  The country is quite large and many of the beach properties are on islands off the coast, which increases the likelihood of spending time in a small plane. For travelers who don’t enjoy flying, then Mozambique might not be the right choice.

It would be easy to spend a week in Mozambique, especially if you’re a diving enthusiast or on a honeymoon. When visiting as a beachy add-on to a luxury South Africa safari itinerary, four nights gives you enough time to slow into the destination.

Mozambique is a malaria endemic country and visitors are at risk of contracting the mosquito-transmitted disease.

The  CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Mozambique take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Consult your doctor to assess which antimalarial is the best option for you.

If you add Mozambique on to a safari you will almost certainly have to fly into Pemba or Vilanculous and then take a road or helicopter transfer. Among the properties we favor, White Pearl  is one of the few that you can reach via road from South Africa.

Mozambique is quite a large and many of the beach properties are located on islands off the coast, which increases the likelihood of spending time in a small plane. For travelers who don’t enjoy flying, then Mozambique might not be the right choice.

As a beach destination Mozambique offers exclusive luxury in remote areas. Naturally, this exclusivity and luxury comes at a premium.

You’ll find easier on the wallet options if you stay on the mainland, and the more luxury spots will be found a helicopter away on island like the Bazaruto Archipelago.

The scuba diving in Mozambique is considered some of the best in the world.

The north (Quirimbas) offers gorgeous coral reefs, and the south (Inhambane, especially) provides sightings of humpback whales, reef sharks and manta rays. Bazaruto has a bit of both.

Depending on where you stay, you’re offered everything from shallow reef dive sites to those up to 30 meters in depth. Strict PADI standards are always adhered to and you can always do an introductory PADI “discovery” class to test out the diving experience.

If you are traveling to Mozambique specifically for the diving , we recommend going between July and October.

When is the best time to visit Mozambique?

Depending whether you go to the north or the south, Mozambique can be a year-round destination. January through March/April are the hottest and wettest months and there is always a good chance of rain. But we wouldn’t rule these months out altogether, especially if you are staying as long as a week. It won’t likely ruin your Mozambique safari, but be prepared for rain.

If you are traveling to Mozambique specifically for the diving , we recommend going between July and October. The humpback whales migrate into the Mozambique waters during that time, so if you have your heart set of viewing these magnificent creatures, time your vacation accordingly.

In addition, the south ( Bazaruto , Inhambane , Ponta Mamoli ) can have heavy rainfall and even cyclones on certain parts of the coast between January and March. In the north (the Quirimbas , Ilha de Mozambique ) the rainiest time of year is more closely aligned with the rains in East Africa, between March and May. Of course there is annual variation and in theory it could rain for a day or two at any time of year.

Because it is so easily accessible from South Africa , Southern Mozambique gets very busy during the South African holiday seasons, mainly December to January and the Easter Holidays. If you want to avoid the masses, then perhaps look at traveling out of these periods.

What are the best things to do in Mozambique?

Mozambique is well suited to travelers interested in water activities, marine life, and gorgeous beaches. Scuba diving ,  snorkeling ,  fishing ,  dhow sundowners ,  kayaking , or simply relaxing on the beach are the best ways to fully experience some of the coastal regions of Mozambique:  Ponta Amoli ,  Inhambane , and  Quirimbas .

Game-viewing in Mozambique will hopefully be successful in Gorongosa with an increase in visitors and further habituation of the animals. The safari experience can be an enjoyable one because of the lack of crowds, but you do need to search a little harder for the animals. You won’t trip over them as you would in Kenya and Tanzania .

Maputo and the other Mozambique towns are historically fascinating. The architecture, museums, markets, bars, and cafes can best be explored on foot or on guided walking tours.

Wildlife in Mozambique

Gorongosa is home to big cats, elephant, hippo, crocodile, a wide variety of antelope and smaller animals such as civets, genets, and cerval. However, the game-viewing is just not as dense or prolific as in other parts of Africa.

In terms of wildlife, Mozambique’s big draw is its marine life. Depending on where you are and the time of year you can see manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins, turtles, humpback whales, whale sharks, reef sharks, hammerheads, enormous grouper, barracuda, snapper, and tuna. The southern waters are good for seeing these larger creatures while the northern waters are rich with beautiful coral reefs.

In many respects, the south of Mozambique is the archetypal tropical beach nirvana. Also, it boasts world-class snorkeling, diving, and game fishing .

Tourism to Mozambique, consisting mainly of South African fishermen, is concentrated here in a string of developed beach resorts. These include Tofo, Inhambane, Vilanculos, and the offshore islands of Bazaruto National Park.

The beaches of the north of Mozambique are no less beautiful, and the offshore reefs and islands are just as bountiful. However, amenities here tend to be more scattered. With the exception of the mainland resort of Pemba and the honeymoon-friendly Quirimbas Islands, they are generally more rudimentary.

Mozambique has some of the most absorbing towns in southern Africa. These range from the modern capital Maputo, with its palm-lined avenidas and Art Deco architecture, to historic backwaters such as Ilha de Moçambique (the capital of Portuguese East Africa for almost four centuries) and Ibo.

For wildlife safari enthusiasts, highlights include the renascent Gorongosa National Park inland of Beira and the vast Niassa Game Reserve bordering Tanzania.

Climate:  Tropical. The dry season runs from April to November when the weather is warm & sunny during the day & cool in the evenings. December to March is the wet season and the days are typically hotter than the dry season.

Credit Cards:  Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most major hotels. American Express is not accepted in Mozambique.

Currency:   Mozambique Meticais, however US Dollars & South African Rand are widely used. Carry sufficient funds in USD cash to pay for tips, shopping, activities & meals/snacks outside of hotels. Carry a mix of small & large denominations, which are newer than 2006.

Geography:   With stunning natural attractions, such as the Bazaruto Archipelago with its string of beautiful islands, Mozambique is the ultimate diving & angling destination. The country’s terrain is mostly coastal lowland with uplands in the center and mountains in the west.

Languages:   English, Portuguese & Bantu

Medical:   A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you have traveled to/through a known Yellow Fever area/country visited.

Packing: B athing suits, sunglasses, sunhat, wraps or cover-ups, beach shoes, sunscreen, etc. are essential. Also sneakers for some activities. Light cool & informal clothing for the day and smart casual or beach chic for the evening. High heels are not recommended in soft sand.

Visas:   US Citizens require holiday visas to enter Mozambique. Mozambique requires 3 blank pages in your passport AND must be valid for 6 months after departure from the last country visited.

Mozambique is first and foremost an ideal beach destination. A trip to Mozambique is not complete without visiting the tropical islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago or the pristine sandy beaches along the east coast. Popular activities include scuba diving at some of the world’s best dive sites , as well as snorkelling, fishing, surfing and horse riding . 

Most safaris to Mozambique also incorporate a bush experience, visiting the untamed Transfrontier Peace Park and/or the Maputo Elephant Reserve . The wilderness areas of Mozambique are wild and rugged, making for a real African adventure . You also get to experience Mozambique’s rich culture and colonial past in the towns and cities visited on the Mozambique safaris, as well as the exotic cuisine and abundant fresh seafood of this beautiful country.

Mozambique was one of a few countries in Africa to be colonised by the Portuguese and has suffered enormously from internal strife since independence.

Although now stable, the lost decades have left Mozambique a long way behind in terms of travel infrastructure.

This place remains very much a frontier country for tourism with vast untouched wildernesses.

As alluring as that may seem, the reality is that extensive travel here can be expensive, difficult and unreliable.

The main exceptions are a handful of superb beach lodges along the vast 2200km frontage onto the Indian Ocean.

These coastal lodges can be easily accessed by air from South Africa, some directly from the safari areas of Kruger.

The most popular location is Bazaruto, where a string of very beautiful islands host some top beach lodges.

Cabo Delgado is a very remote area to the far north, with some great beach lodges ...

The Nampula Coast includes the historic Ilha de Mocambique and some really interesting accommodation options.

The southern coast around Maputo is sub-tropical and also contains some great beach lodges.

Most people visit one or two beach lodges, usually after safari elsewhere in Southern Africa.

The best time to head to Mozambique is generally May-Oct, but there are reasons to visit during other months.

The main potential downsides are the inherently high prices, inconvenient access and adverse weather conditions.

Gorongosa National Park

A diverse and beautiful area that has recently opened up to visitors - come here for a fantastic wilderness experience of water and walking rather than for prolific wildlife.

Gorongosa National Park was once a superb game viewing destination. Before the onset of the civil war in the 1970s, it was considered one of Africa's finest parks, with large populations of herbivores and predators. However, Gorongosa's game populations were hugely affected by the troubles Mozambique suffered, and it is only in recent years that a restoration project has been put in place to re-establish the park and its game viewing. The Carr Foundation, a U.S. not-for-profit organization, has teamed with the Government of Mozambique to protect and restore the ecosystem of Gorongosa National Park and to develop an ecotourism industry to benefit local communities.

When to go to Gorongosa National Park

Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Gorongosa in Mozambique

Mozambique in January

January is one of the wettest, hottest and most humid months in Mozambique, with average daytime temperatures reaching the low 30s °C, dropping only to around 24°C at night. Although the rain falls mostly as tropical downpours in late afternoon/evening, with the rest of the time sunny, there are definitely better times to visit. Diving is generally good, but visibility can be limited. Dolphins are abundant, but humpback whales have moved out and this is the last month with a reasonable chance of spotting whale sharks and manta rays. On beaches, turtles lay their eggs and by the end of the month some are beginning to hatch. After the busy Christmas/New Year period lodges are almost empty, so it’s a good time to avoid the “crowds”.

• One of the wettest & hottest months, with high humidity
• Diving is fair but visibility can be poor
• Great for dolphin viewing
• Turtles laying eggs, which begin to hatch by end of month
• The low season so lodges much quieter, but for a reason

The hot, wet weather continues, with rainfall at its peak in February in the south, and temperatures as high as those experienced in January; this is also the start of the cyclone season. Such storms are relatively rare but when they do occur they bring widespread devastation and disruption. Although the sea is wonderfully warm, beaches can be pretty windy and diving at this time of the year can be more challenging, with choppier waters and sometimes pretty poor visibility. As such, lodges tend to have good availability. The chances of seeing manta rays and whale sharks are minimal now, but turtles are still laying eggs followed by hatchlings making a dash for the ocean.

Weather in February

Mozambique in March

Rainfall is still high, peaking in the north – where it continues for longer than in the south – and the threat of tropical cyclones remains (2019 saw Idai wreak havoc). Temperatures fall ever so slightly but it’s still hot, with daily temperatures averaging 30°C and nights around 23°C. It’s still pretty humid but this begins to drop away towards the end of the month when the weather generally starts to improve. Diving, as in previous months, can be OK with warm seas, but conditions are unpredictable, and visibility is still only fair. Of the key marine species, only dolphins are now regularly seen and the last of the turtle hatchlings make for the sea. Availability is usually good, but when Easter falls in March, lodges can get booked up early.

• Diving is reasonable, but visibility can be hit and miss
• Turtle spotting excellent
• Although low season, Easter can get booked up quickly

Although rain still lingers in the north, the rainy season in the south draws to an end. Temperatures are still high but as the rain peters out, humidity drops considerably and so it feels much more comfortable. There is still a small risk of tropical cyclones (as in 2019, when cyclone Kenneth hit), but these are usually extremely rare. Diving conditions improve with increased visibility and the sea is still warm, so April can be a lovely month for diving or a beach holiday. It is also excellent for fishing, with most of the game fish species being present. Lodges begin to see more visitors and can get especially busy over Easter.

As the rains cease in the north, May marks the start of the dry season across Mozambique (although the odd freak cyclone has been known to make landfall, this is exceptional). The days are warm and sunny, with low humidity and temperatures around 27°C, while evenings start to cool to around 16°C. It’s a really good month to visit coastal areas and as such the lodges get a bit busier and prices start to rise. Diving continues to improve with good visibility and calm waters, and the excellent game fishing conditions continue. Lastly, Mozambique’s biggest international music festival, Azgo, takes place in Maputo during May.

Good weather continues with pleasantly warm days, clear skies and a bit of a breeze – ideal for a relaxing beach holiday. Diving conditions are near perfect with good visibility, though note that sea temperatures are dropping by a couple of degrees. Southern right whales start appearing along the coastline. The excellent deep-sea fishing continues. On Ibo Island in the Quirimbas Archipelago, 24 June sees the Feast of St John the Baptist – celebrated as Kueto Siriwala (“to not forget your roots”) day. Expect dhow races as well as traditional music and dance. Lodges are getting busier and with Mozambique’s month-long summer holiday beginning in late June, it’s advisable to book well in advance. This is one of the best months and prices increase, reflecting the move into this peak season.

The dry season is now in full swing so clear blue skies abound. Warm, sunny days and cool evenings continue, with average temperatures between 25°C during the day and 16°C at night. July is definitely one of the best months to visit the Mozambique coast, though beaches can be a little windy. Humpback whales begin making their long annual migration from Antarctica to the warmer waters off East Africa to calve; if you’re lucky you may get to see them, especially at the end of the month. Diving and snorkelling conditions are reaching optimum levels with generally excellent visibility, though the water is now chilly by Mozambique standards. Fishing is still very good for most game species. Lodges are filling up due to northern hemisphere school holidays.

As in July, the days are lovely and warm – great for lying on a beach, though there’s a slight chill to the evenings and the sea is at its coolest at around 16°C. This is one of the best times to visit Mozambique, and is a great month for diving as visibility now reaches its peak, but it can be a bit windy. Humpback whale numbers are increasing, and manta rays and whale sharks start to appear, though are not a common sighting. Fishing drops off a bit but some species such as sailfish and queen mackerel are still taking bait. August is very popular – probably the busiest month – so lodges can be quite full and family-friendly resorts will have more children around.

In September, temperatures begin to climb and warm, sunny days continue, although evenings are still cooler (averaging around 28°C in the day and 19°C at night); this is historically the driest month in Mozambique. Whale watching is getting even better as numbers increase and, as in August, diving and snorkelling conditions are excellent with great visibility. Sightings of whale sharks and manta rays begin to increase, and while dolphins are seen throughout the year, September is the start of the best dolphin-viewing period. The fishing is good with marlin, sailfish and kingfish all possibilities. Although the school holidays have ended it is still high season and still a popular month – it’s our favourite month here.

October is the hottest of the dry months with daytime temperatures peaking at around 30°C and evenings feeling balmy at around 20°C. With the heat building, the rains can begin right at the end of the month. The fishing is very good, especially for the bigger game fish like marlin. October is also considered the best month for whale watching, and one of the best for dolphins, which are present in good numbers. The chances of seeing whale sharks and manta rays also increase as the seas warm up; this, and the next two months, are best for sightings. Like August and September, October is also excellent for diving and snorkelling, with superb visibility, thus it’s another popular month, and carries peak season prices.

As the dry season ends and the wet season starts, the weather becomes a lot more unpredictable. Days are very hot with humidity increasing, though rainfall is still fairly low. November heralds the return of turtles coming ashore to nest and lay their eggs. With visibility still pretty clear, diving and snorkelling conditions remain good. There is still a decent chance of seeing humpback whales before they begin heading off towards the end of the month, whilst sightings of whale sharks and manta rays remain good, and dolphin sightings excellent. Fishing for certain species, especially kingfish and marlin, remains excellent. It’s no longer high season so prices of some lodges come down.

Days are still hot, with rising humidity making it feel a lot stickier. Average daytime temperatures hit 31°C+, with evenings around 23°C. December is one of the rainiest months, but expect short sharp thunderstorms as opposed to lengthy rainfall. The turtle-nesting season is now in full swing, so seeing females laying their eggs becomes a possibility. As humpback whales head back south, sightings become scarce, but dolphins, whale sharks and manta rays are still present in good numbers. Fishing for marlin, bonito and kingfish is still excellent. Sea visibility is generally good, but it can become a little hit and miss as the sun and warm seas encourage plankton blooms. Christmas and New Year are very popular periods despite invariably carrying price supplements.

We spent a few hours at the Museum of Natural History, that was worth the cab fare. Very Interesting place and I highly recommend it if you have some time.

The Haldanes run a great operation and have a special area with incredible game diversity and numbers. This didn’t happen by accident and has taken years of diligent effort. I couldn’t recommend them enough. I’m headed back with them in October 2014.

NHACAINGA CONSERVANCY,  COUTADA 9 Nhacainga is a wildlife area that has been developed over the last 15 years within the Coutada 9 lease area in the Manica Province of Mozambique.  The main camps in this area are the Tandikwe Camp and the Njiri Eco Camp.  Fly Camps are erected for clients who wish to have a more rustic experience or those who need to hunt the blocks far from the main lodges. BUFFALO CAMP, ZAMBEZI DELTA This beautiful area is made up of palm savanna, open grassland and perennial rivers on the edge of the famous Marromeu Buffalo Reserve.  It has excellent numbers of buffalo.  Together with the plainsgame available in Nhacainga Conservancy a combination hunt between these two areas is an excellent and diverse safari option.

From the Zambezi to the Sea: Accounts From a Grand Safari in Southern Africa

T here are many ways to construct an African safari. Not that you need a theme — simply deciding to decamp to the Masai Mara in Kenya or maybe South Africa’s Kruger National Park is ample enough reason to take a safari. You go on safari because you can. No grand excuse is necessary.

Nature plans better than we could, anyway. In certain instances, it’s timing that’s the key, taking a safari to coincide with the Great Migration in the Serengeti, for instance. In others, geology could dictate the path for you because there’s no need to follow an imaginary line on a map when our planet has already taken the lead.

The Zambezi River crosses into or serves as a sliver of border for Angola, Botswana and Namibia. But it begins its journey in Zambia, the country for which it’s most associated, and serves as the demarcation line between Zambia and Zimbabwe before flowing through Mozambique and into the sea beyond. Handing the reins to nature, what if you followed its course and combined a river-centric safari in Zambia with a stop at Victoria Falls — the Zambezi’s most notable feature is one of the Seven Natural Wonders in the World — and concluded with Mozambique’s beautiful coastline, where the Mighty Zambezi meets its match and empties itself into the Indian Ocean? Let’s find out.

Safari Along the Zambezi

This itinerary was put together by The Luxury Safari Company , founded by Rose Hipwood in 2010. She specializes in bespoke, high-end safaris, and it was Hipwood’s idea to head to Lower Zambezi National Park for a glimpse of what makes the ecosystem so spectacular. From there, I knew I didn’t want to miss out on Victoria Falls and that I wanted to pair the safari with a coastal excursion. She made the whole thing happen in style while ensuring every logistical challenge was handled with ease.

After flying to South Africa, connecting from Johannesburg to Lusaka, Zambia, and hopping on a bush flight, my first stop was the newly renovated Chiawa Camp in Lower Zambezi National Park. The camp is nestled alongside the riverbank in a prime swath of real estate for wildlife viewing, and as if on cue as we arrive via speed boat, four elephants make a slow, graceful crossing across the river to a small, low-lying island where they enjoy whiling away the hot afternoons.

The river is omnipresent in Lower Zambezi National Park, not only its physical being but in the way that it has dictated and shaped its surroundings while providing for the wildlife who call it home. Even in dry season, with a sweltering heat wave sending temperatures soaring well past 110 degrees, the river is large and full of life.

It’s easy to see why founder Grant Cumings handpicked this locale to serve as Chiawa’s home back in 1988. “We were the first camp in this entire national park — there were no roads, no protection,” he says. That doesn’t mean things were quiet, though. “The poaching was insane,” he adds. “We’d find dozens of elephants poached every year.”

Guides with experience dating back to those early days still speak with sadness about the state of the wildlife in the park at that time, hearing gunshots in the night and watching the animals that weren’t killed flee en masse. The presence of Cumings and his team, followed by the deployment of a well-trained, armed park ranger service funded in large part via tourism, was able to turn the tide.

Little did I know that Chiawa’s aforementioned renovation was chronicled with a reality television show , an idea that seems about as far removed from the camp’s rough and tumble origin as you could imagine. But the impact of the overhaul was clear — its nine tents were enlarged and upgraded, and a new solar energy system was installed to provide the camp’s full electrical supply. Also clear is that Cumings would make for excellent TV fodder. He’s a walking anecdote after a life spent in the bush, prone to telling visitors things like how their planned canoe ride will take them down the “channel of death” and that a few people “get wet” and fall off their canoes into the water each year.

I recall the line later that afternoon as an enormous crocodile slides into the water 10 or 20 feet ahead of my canoe. While you know hippos and crocs are all over the place, it’s a different feeling to see one disappear from sight and remain lurking nearby, you fully aware of its presence.

That only heightened the senses though for the viewing that was about to unfold. A herd of about 18 or 20 elephants head to the channel, including wizened matriarchs, a few adorable, awkward youth, and one with a snub-nosed trunk who had to dunk its head under the water to have a drink — possibly the handy work of that now unseen crocodile. They drink and splash and then decide they’ve had enough and cross the channel. Being in such close proximity in the canoe, hovering right above the water without the protection or escapability of a large vessel, provides an eye-opening perspective and appreciation for the majestic creatures and the place they call home.

Beyond game drives and perhaps perilous canoe rides, Chiawa offers boat cruises, catch and release fishing outings, pontoon boat lunches on the water and walking safaris. The latter is another chance to gain a different vantage and understanding of the Lower Zambezi and its wildlife.

After establishing Chiawa, Cumings has since expanded to operate three safari camps, with a fourth on the way this year. Down the river from Chiawa is its sister camp Old Mondoro ; while it’s a short ride away and rests on the same riverbank, it’s an entirely different setting. Old Mondoro feels less like an enclosed camp within a national park than a scattering of small constructions within the wilderness.

When elephants or buffalo pass in front of your tent, it’s clear they’re not coming onto your turf; you’re visiting them on theirs . There are no fences or manicured paths, this is a bush camp that’s very much in and of the place. It’s pure, wild Lower Zambezi. A leopard may take a casual moonlit stroll 100 feet from your dining table, or you may be unable to leave your tent for a stretch if the resident buffalos have taken up outside your front door.

Back at Chiawa, I went on an afternoon game drive with Sam Simunji, a seasoned guide who called his safari vehicle the Lucky Limo. The name proved apt, as the drive played out in the way of many game drives, a long lull with nothing happening before an unforgettable moment erupts, seemingly conjured out of thin air. But in this case, Sam predicted it and even made a maneuver to ensure it took place.

He found a group of four lions dubbed the Ginger Boys, so named for the mane of the eldest member. One or two of the adult males in the group, which was splintered off from a larger pride, are his children. The lions were lazing about in the oppressive heat when a male elephant approached the area. He lurked a good distance away but was eyeing the lions the whole time. Sam, eyeing the elephant in turn, backed our vehicle away, explaining that he felt the elephant may approach or confront the lions, and that we would be in their path should they need to flee the scene.

Now repositioned, we had a great view as the elephant decided he had enough of those lions brazenly hanging out in his domain, trumpeting and charging the group, a tusked freight truck roaring ahead at full speed. Would there be a scrap? Not quite. Four terrified “kings of the jungle” scampered away in great haste, tails between their legs and fright filling their eyes, looking back to see if they were safe.

Sam laughed with glee. Later, he explained that he was taught to anticipate action and put himself in an appropriate place, not only for what’s happening but for what might yet come. “The most important thing I learned, that I still use to this day, was when I was told ‘Sam, you live here, you know how the animals behave,’” he says. He allowed the development to happen and then put us in prime position to see it.

The Zambezi Feeds One of the Wonders of the World

After an action-packed stay in the Lower Zambezi, it was time to follow the river to its fiercest point, Victoria Falls. It may not be the highest waterfall or have the most gushing flow, but if you combine the factors of height, width and flow, it’s considered the world’s largest. The Mighty Zambezi powers it, and powers is an appropriate word.

There are myriad excursions to pursue in and around the falls depending on your tolerance for thrills, as well as the season and conditions. Take an observational walk, getting soaked along the way; hop on a zipline over or bungee jump into its gorges; or go for a dip right at its edge in Devil’s Pool. But the best way to appreciate its splendor is to get a bird’s eye view via helicopter ride. This allows you to see not only its vast expanse and its sheer strength but also appreciate the complete system of which it’s a part. There’s the mile-long face of the falls itself, sure, but then there’s the canyon system it has carved out over the eons, a series of jagged, 100-meter deep switchback gorges that the falls pour into as the Zambezi recollects itself and marches forward.

Plan to spend a few nights at Matetsi to make the most of your stop. The luxury, 19-villa lodge in Zimbabwe is located about 45 minutes away from the falls, making it easy to take one or several trips throughout a stay. Yet, by being located outside of the cities that line the falls on either side of the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, you also get to keep the safari lifestyle going.

Conservation is of the utmost importance to Matetsi, as it’s more than a swanky place to rest your head — it’s a gigantic private game reserve. Matetsi stewards 136,000 acres of territory, including nine miles of riverfront, home to all manners of wildlife. They employ a dedicated anti-poaching team and have constructed 16 solar-powered watering holes around the terrain, ensuring wildlife have ample water sources during dry season. They also support a number of nonprofit initiatives and work closely with neighboring communities.

Amid the Gorillas of the Albertine Rift

Matetsi’s vast reserve serves as a playground for guests, though you might be tempted to stay put in your lavish, enclosed villa, equipped with a plunge pool, soaking tub and contemporary styling, with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors providing an expansive view of the Zambezi. Elsewhere, there’s a spa and gym, lap pool and a wine cellar, while game drives, boat cruises and elaborate breakfasts in the bush are among the activities.

Mozambique’s Beaches May Be the World’s Best Kept Secret

The Zambezi doesn’t vanish into oblivion after Victoria Falls, of course. The 1,599-mile river has a solid stretch of road ahead of it before reaching the Indian Ocean, its mouth found about halfway up Mozambique’s lengthy coastline. We’re following the river’s path, but as some travelers may want an East African safari to Kenya or Tanzania with a visit to a sun-soaked beach like Zanzibar, when in southern Africa, you can do the same in Mozambique.

Mozambique’s coast may be one of the world’s best kept secrets, and when flying into Vilanculos (or Vilankulo) and getting your first glimpse from the air, its beauty stuns you with immediacy. Its powdery white sands and turquoise waters are on par with anything found in the Maldives or Turks & Caicos.

I’ll concede the Zambezi delta is quite far north of Vilanculos, but it served as a capable stand-in nevertheless. The river got us to the coast, but the reason we’re here specifically is the Bazaruto archipelago found mere miles off this stretch of Mozambique’s coast.

Plan a stay at the beachfront Santorini Mozambique , an estate-like getaway whose whitewashed walls and blue accents and décor are evocative of its namesake and also a fitting match of its environs. Santorini has five suites spread across its main villa, where there’s a pool, bar and numerous little hideaways to lounge and soak up the vibes. There are also three private villas, one of which, Villa da Praia, is expanding from three to four bedrooms next year. Across the grounds is a lush garden and a spa and a that takes guests straight down to the shore, toes in the sand in a matter of steps.

A visit to Santorini is focused on getting out onto the water, and an outing to Magaruque Island in the Bazaruto archipelago painted a pristine portrait of what the region has to offer. An excursion might include a private picnic lunch after a snorkeling session, where dolphins and turtles may make an appearance, and a cruise around the islands, where a flamboyance of flamingos numbering in the hundreds may be found.

That’s the essence of a safari and the ideal that keeps travelers coming back time and time again.
