Alabama is a soft-rock/ bluegrass/ American country band from Fort Payne, Alabama. The lineup that the band held for most of its career consists of Mark Herndon, Jeff Cook, Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry.

Cousins Randy Owen (lead vocalist/ guitar), and Teddy Gentry (backing vocals/ bass) formed the band, and together they recruited their other cousin Jeff Cook (guitar/ fiddle/ keyboard) in 1969. In 1972 the band got a gig playing as the opening act for various other artists at Canyonland Theme Park, however it was not enough to make a living out of, so the three members pursued various other jobs, putting the band on the backburner.

In March 1973 the band decided to pursue music professionally and the trip moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and performed six nights a week at the Bowery. They also took out a loan in order to record and release their own album to sell at their shows, and to send out as demos to labels. In 1977 the band caught a break with GRT Records signing them, but when the label declared bankruptcy after releasing the one record in their contract, the band was also contractually forbidden to record with another label.

It wasn’t until 1979 when the band was able to self-record and release another album entitled “Alabama Band No. 3;” additionally, Mark Herndon stepped in as drummer to replace Rick Scott. They self-promoted their single “I Wanna Come Over” and eventually the band was able to grab the attention of Dallas based label, MDJ Records. Their second single “My House’s In Alabama” was extremely successful as well, reaching mainstream attention reaching the top 20. It also caught the attention of RCA records, with whom they signed a contract with in 1980.

While with RCA, Alabama had the luxury of creative freedom, and was able to tour extensively after the successful release of more singles. Their release of “Mountain Magic” in 1982 was found with HUGE success, going quadruple platinum with over 6 million copies sold, consequently launching the band into super stardom. By January 1986 the band had a number of hits, allowing RCA to release a Greatest Hits compilation.

Despite their albums still reaching gold and silver statuses, and selling millions of copies, the band’s popularity started to decline in the 1990s. Despite the decline, however, the band was still finding continued success with sales of their singles and shows. By May 2002 the band announced a farewell tour, collecting over $15 million in ticket sales alone.

Live reviews

There are many bands who have tried to make music that embodies the sense of a place. Whether it be the West coast of California, central New York or London's east end it is quite a feat to create a sound that sonically represents your surrounding. Alabama were clearly confident in doing this after taking their namesake from their home state way back in 1969.

It is fair to say that the bluegrass rock that the band creates really does seem to embody the oozing melting pot that is the deep south. Having enjoyed commercial and critical success during their heyday, the band continues to tour relentlessly so as to satisfy the huge demand to see the veterans.

Fans old and new gather to enjoy classics such as 'Tennessee River' and 'Song Of The South' performed in the anthemic manner of which is accustomed with Alabama. A wonderful sense of nostalgia prevails throughout and the band performs with skill and determination onstage encouraged by the baying masses. By the final singalong of 'Mountain Music' it is obvious Alabama could hope for better musical representation.

Alabama...no not Alabama Shakes, this is Alabama...just Alabama! But trust me ladies and gentlemen this classic band define Alabama so well. Formed in 1969 this American band are still rocking hard, who says grandads cant rock nowadays... It seems like you guys have been missing a bit of sing-a-long country music because these guys are bac touring again! They reel off some oldtime tunes which will get you into the Southern blues no problem! 'Song of the South' with its timeless guitar riff and sweet soothing vocals which anyone will sing to just 10 seconds of hearing it. Alabama rattle through their anthems with such ease, playing effortlessly it appears. Such feel good vibes from these country Gods, with material such as; 'Mountain Music' and lets not forget the heartbreaking 'American Pride'.

If you love American country music then you cant go wrong with Alabama! These oldies but goldies are worth witnessing live no doubt about it! I love blues music myself, but these guys are literaly swaying me to country music!

Fantastic Venue...little smaller than the big arenas so great seats no matter what. The show was absolutely amazing - they still rock after all these years! Full house and fun crowd ...what a great night! I will definitely be going back to Sioux Falls for more concerts. Even if it’s a 10 hour drive for us it was a true adventure! Would love to see Alabama again and again...we danced the entire show and was not left disappointed. They played all my favourites and more!

Enjoyable. The voice is weakening a bit. I think too much reacting with the crowd. I see it as filler so they can get their breath back. The song choice great and you can never doubt the strength of their legacy. If you are a true Alabama fan you loved it. If you are a music fan and not a loyalist it was just OK.

I saw Alabama in 1986 in Sacramento. They were fantastic. I have a pair of Randy Owens red wrist bands. I won't say how I got them!! It was all on the up and up. Alabama is one of the greatest country rock bands ever. Randy you are soooo easy on the eyes!!

Write your review of Alabama here.. The concert was outstanding. There is a reason Randy (great voice), Teddy (fantastic bassist), Jeff (talented musician) have lasted 40 years. ALABAMA is still a great band. No frills just great music. Thank you!!!

We so enjoyed seeing Alabama, they went all the way to make sure we all enjoyed the show. We have listened to Alabama's music for many years, and really hated it when they retired. We hope in the near future they will book more shows.

Outstanding show!!! Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry, and Jeff Cook still have it after 40 years. Their harmonies are still rock solid. They truly love their music and their fans. No wonder they are legends.

Alabama Tap Old Dominion, Shenandoah, Montgomery Gentry for June Jam XVIII

  • By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Country-rock stalwarts Alabama have enlisted Old Dominion , Shenandoah, and more for June Jam XVIII, taking place June 1 at the VFW Fairgrounds in Fort Payne, Alabama.

Alabama will close out the day, which will also feature performances from Lee Greenwood, Montgomery Gentry (featuring Eddie Montgomery), Mark Willis, Exile, John Berry, Taylor Hicks, the Malpass Brothers, and the Castellows. A special surprise guest — described only as a “hitmaking singer-songwriter” in a press release — will take the stage, too, though obviously no further details were given.

The June Jam Festival returned last year after a 26-year hiatus. Alabama launched the charity event in their hometown of Fort Payne back in 1982, and it ran continuously through 1997. Over the years, the festival has raised more than $20 million for the June Jam Foundation; this year, donations will benefit those in need and disaster relief efforts in and around Alabama.

“When we started the first June Jam in 1982 as a charity concert event, it was attended by over 30,000 fans,” Teddy Gentry added. “At the time, it was the largest country music festival in the United States. Now we are getting ready for our 18th concert. We want to welcome everyone to Fort Payne, Alabama, our hometown. Come have a great time and help others in need!”

While the June Jam concert is the main event, there are a whole lot of other festivities scheduled in the lead up to the festival. The Miss June Jam Pageant will take place May 4; the Alabama June Jam Parade will be held May 29; Gentry will host a talent show on May 30; and Alabama will anchor a “songwriters showcase” on May 31 with Lee Thomas Miller, Brice Long, and a surprise guest. Alabama relaunching 50th anniversary tour.

Posted by Buddy Iahn | Jun 28, 2021

Trek kicks back off July 2nd and 3rd in Nashville

Alabama is poised to return to the road after nearly two years for the group’s long-awaited 50th Anniversary Tour — much of which was delayed due to COVID-19. The new dates consists of nearly 30 arena and amphitheater concerts and will take place throughout 2021 and early 2022. Special guests Martina McBride, The Marshall Tucker Band, Travis Tritt, Sara Evans, America, Grits & Glamour (Lorrie Morgan & Pam Tillis), Tracy Lawrence, The Beach Boys, The Frontmen of Country (Richie McDonald formerly of Lonestar, Tim Rushlow formerly of Little Texas & Larry Stewart of Restless Heart) and Jake Hoot will join the legendary country rock group on select dates. Additional dates are to be announced

“We are very thankful that we can play our music for our loyal fans of the past 50 years and introduce our songs to a new third and fourth generation of new fans,” says Alabama lead singer Randy Owen. “We have rehearsed an all-new show that we are having fun performing, but you never know, we might even take requests from time to time. There’s nothing like the roar of the crowd, and we can’t wait to get back on the road.”

The band’s milestone tour kicks off on July 2nd and 3rd at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. These two concerts mark Alabama’s first arena performance in Nashville in nearly two decades. Additionally, the shows will be the first full-capacity concerts held at Bridgestone Arena since the start of the pandemic in early March of 2020.

“This tour, that we are blessed to have, has the most amazing group of musicians and vocalists that we have ever had on the road,” explains Alabama bass player and vocalist Teddy Gentry. “In addition, we wanted to bring along some special friends to join us on tour each night. From The Marshall Tucker Band to Travis Tritt and Martina McBride to The Beach Boys, what a party we are going to have. I can’t tell you how ready we are to see and play for you.”

Tickets for the tour are on-sale now via Ticketmaster . Previously purchased tickets for rescheduled dates will be honored at each show. Fans who are now unable to attend may request a refund. Eligibility for a refund requires a previous purchase through Ticketmaster – tickets that were transferred, posted, or sold will not be honored.

In 1969, a trio of young musical cousins from Fort Payne, Alabama, journeyed to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to play their music at a bar called The Bowery. It took band members Jeff Cook, Teddy Gentry, and Randy Owen eight years of word-of-mouth and tip jars to earn the major label deal of which they’d been dreaming. Alabama would go on to change the face of country music. Winning GRAMMY®, CMA, ACM and more than 300 industry awards, the Country Music Hall of Fame, Musicians Hall of Fame, and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame band is the most celebrated group in country music history.

Alabama Announce ‘Roll On II’ 2024 Tour Dates

Over the past several years, the members of Alabama have weathered their fair share of health challenges and other logistical difficulties, keeping them from the stage. So they never take the opportunity to tour for granted — and they're getting that chance once again in 2024.

On Thursday (March 21), the group announced a lineup of dates billed as the 2024 Roll On II North American Tour, a reprisal of their 2023 tour of the same name. It's a nod to the band's "Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)," a hit from 1984, as well as a fitting name for a tour presented by Kenworth Trucking Company.

In a statement, frontman Randy Owen says fans who attend a show in 2024 can look forward to singing along to all their favorite Alabama hits.

"I look forward to singing 'Mountain Music,' 'Tennessee River,' 'Feels So Right' and so many more," Owen relates in a statement. "It's just a matter of getting up onstage and enjoying it. We can't wait to see the fans who made it all possible."

For many of the shows, the band will have some extra musical pals along to make the moment even more special. Diamond Rio , the Marshall Tucker Band, Jamey Johnson , Lee Greenwood and the Bellamy Brothers are all booked to perform on various dates on the tour.

In late 2023, Owen gave Taste of Country a positive update on his health , but he stopped short of committing to tour plans for 2024.

"I'm 73 years old. I just had my tests and everything, and everything came back really good. I had my flu shot. So I'm ready to go," he said at that time, but added that the health setbacks he's suffered in the past have left him cautious — and appreciative of every chance he gets to set foot onstage.

"I just never know. I enjoy every show and thank God I get to do one more show," Owen added.

For ticketing information for Alabama's upcoming tour dates, visit the band's website . More dates are expected to be announced at a later time.

Billy Joel performing at The 66th annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 4, 2024. Joel's historic 100th concert at Madison Square Garden, "The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden - The Greatest Arena Run of All Time," will air on Sunday, April 14, 2024, on CBS. CBS

Billy Joel’s 100th concert at Madison Square Garden is scheduled to air on CBS Sunday, April 14 at 9/8c.

Since his first show at the venue on Dec. 14, 1978, through his final residency show this July, every single one of Joel’s concerts at Madison Square Garden has been sold out. Sunday’s performance , however, will be Billy Joel’s first-ever concert to air on a broadcast network, according to CBS.

“The legendary Piano Man celebrates this historic milestone after having sold out the World’s Most Famous Arena every show of his franchise run for ten years, from January 2014 through his final residency show in July 2024,” CBS states.

Where can I watch The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden TV special?

Those who have already ditched basic cable can still live stream Billy Joel’s 100th concert at Madison Square Garden  on CBS Sunday night with either Fubo ,  DirecTV Stream  or  Paramount+ with Showtime .

All three streaming services offer free trials for new subscribers who can watch for free before committing to a paid subscription.

What is Fubo?

Fubo  is set up like any other streaming service, but rather than offering exclusively on-demand content, its offers a plethora of exclusive live TV channels. So like actual cable, but without the hassle and a bit cheaper.

Fubo  considers itself a sports-focused live streaming service, but overall, its standard package comes with over 100 live TV channels for $79.99 a month after its free trial. These channels include ESPN, ABC, NBC, CBS, TLC, MTV and much more.

Fubo also comes with a variety of shows and movies users can watch on-demand along with the option to record your favorite TV shows.

What is DirecTV Stream?

DirecTV Stream  is similar to Fubo in that it offers many of the same channels and features. At $84.98 a month after its free trial, the base package comes with a little over 75 live TV channels.

Those interested can check out all of  DirecTV Stream’s channel packages here .

What is Paramount+ with Showtime?

The  Paramount+ with Showtime  bundle costs users $11.99 per month and has replaced Paramount+’s premium ad-free plan, which was $9.99.

Although not a live streaming service,  Paramount+  allows premium subscribers to live stream certain content and specials as it premieres on regular television (such as new episodes of  The Amazing Race or Survivor ).

CBS apologizes for cutting Billy Joel’s performance short, will re-air full concert

CBS apologized after Billy Joel's live performance was accidentally cut short.

ATLANTA, Ga. ( WANF /Gray News) - To honor Billy Joel’s 100th concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City, CBS aired the concert Sunday night — which was his first concert to ever air on a broadcast network.

Unfortunately, for many viewers throughout central and eastern parts of the country, the performance was cut short, during one of his most iconic songs, ‘Piano Man.’

Billy Joel fans especially shared their frustration with the abrupt ending.

CBS announced Monday afternoon that they will re-air the full show on April 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

“A network programming timing error ended last night’s Billy Joel special approximately two minutes early in the Eastern and Central Time Zones. We apologize to Mr. Joel, his fans, our affiliated stations, and our audience whose viewing experience was interrupted during the last song,” CBS said in their statement.
