Fabulous Trip to Egypt!

We just finished our Egyptian tour with Archaeological Paths and can't say enough wonderful things about this adventure. Our trip was extremely well organized both before and during the tour. It included so many amazing sites and activities; there was never a dull moment. Our guide, Mohammed, was fabulous! He was extremely knowledgeable about Egyptian history and culture; he really made the trip. The accommodations and food were great, and we had a nice group of like minded travelers who were fun to spend time with. This was a trip of a lifetime and Archaeological Paths made it happen.

Archaeological Paths would like to thank you sincerely for choosing our company and trusting us with organizing your unforgettable holiday experience. Besides, we also encourage everyone to familiarize with our day-by-day video reports from Egypt. The videos are available at Archaeological Paths website - in Reviews & Video Blog section. Every day of our tour has been documented and presented in a few minute-movies where, along with the tour guide introduction, our guests have their say on what they experienced. Generally, the movies depict all of that of what you can encounter, with Archaeological Paths and Dr. Zahi Hawass, on the Royal Egypt Tours. There are several hundred of similar reports and commentaries already posted introducing the tour in full light.

First of all, we chose Archaeological Paths because of the completeness of the itinerary. It included all of the main historic sites that we wanted to see as well as exclusive access to many others that I will touch on later. Plus it provided access to Dr. Zahi Hawass (A Rockstar of Egyptology), his protégé Dr. Mostofa Wasiri, and former first lady Madam Jehan Sedat. Words cannot adequately express our overall Egyptian experience! Archaeological Paths (AP) did an excellent job by surpassing our expectations! It was an incredible adventure! We were in awe of the History that we viewed every single day! From the moment we stepped off the plane in Cairo, we were met by an AP representative who easily ushered us through customs and then to the hotel. AP was with us every step of the way and made traveling extremely easy, even up to the point of dropping us off at the Cairo airport at the end of the trip. While we originally had some safety concerns about traveling to Egypt, we never had reason to think of it again while on the trip. When we arrived, we stayed at the Marriot Four Seasons Hotel on the Nile in Giza. The hotel was attached to a very nice shopping mall as well as a casino and was also located next to the French Embassy. The restaurant and pool were located on the 4th floor where we were entertained by local musicians. The facility and food is what you would expect from a 5-star hotel. From the beginning we realized that the schedule was very full, but we knew it was required in order to see all that was being offered by AP. There were many additional sites that were offered, but with the exception of Nefertari’s tomb and a camel ride, we adhered to the base schedule. Even though we were very tired at the end of each day, we were also very excited with what we had experienced. While we would have liked to have spent more time in many of the locations, there is simply so much to see in a two week trip. It truly showed us that there is so much more to see and experience in Egypt. A return trip is definitely on our future agenda. We were so excited to not only meet with Dr. Hawass, but to have him guide us through a few of the sites. While we met with him 5 different times on the trip, we also had the honor of his company at our dinner table one night. We also met with Dr. Wasiri at the Temple of Karnak where he discussed his latest finds. We were very fortunate to have met both of them at a time when each were involved in recent discoveries that were making headlines. It was really inspiring to hear their stories before they made the new feeds. They were both so excited and passionate about their work! Meeting Jehan Sadat and her daughter (Gihan) was a real pleasure. Both were more than happy to open their home and speak openly with us. Two of their cats even met us at the front door when we arrived. During normal tourist visitation hours, the Giza plateau is heavily occupied by tourists. However, we were provided private access to Khufu’s pyramid as well as the Sphinx prior to normal tourist hours. Our access allowed us to go all the way down to the Sphinx for a lecture by Dr. Hawass. We walked around the Sphinx and took pictures with Dr. Hawass between its’ paws. All other tourists are required to stay behind a fence and were not allowed such personal access. Dr. Hawass also met us at the pyramid builders tombs and the Luxor temple at night. We saw no other groups doing these activities. Until you see the huge crowds at these sites, you can’t appreciate the private access! Awesome! We cruised the Nile on the Le Fayan cruise ship. The bedrooms (and bathrooms) were larger than cruise ships we have experienced in the past. We enjoyed being entertained by a belly dancer and a tanoura dancer one night in the lounge. The Galabia party on the top deck was also fun. The crew were very nice and seemed to appreciate that we were sailing with them. It is hard to describe how relaxing it was to sit on the top deck of the ship and enjoy the Nile riverside with a glass of wine (Incredible!). Staying at the Mena House on the final night was a real treat! The Giza pyramids were located adjacent to the property, which made for an incredible vista both day and night. The grounds were isolated from local traffic such that it was an oasis on the edge of the desert. It was a great way to end our trip! We cannot overstate the logistical efforts involved with each day that remained hidden to us due to the great job of our AP handlers! Thanks to Ahmed, Kamila, & Hani we were able to relax and enjoy each day with no concerns. Thanks so much to each of you!!! Ahmed was our tour guide throughout the trip. His knowledge of the sites/Egyptian history and his sense of humor were well appreciated. While we had some initial fears of the food, we had no issues during the trip. The food was very well prepared and very good. We ate most of the foods provided including the salads/vegetables. The US dollar is well received in Egypt so don’t exchange all of your USD’s to Egyptian Pounds (EGP). The large souvenir expenses can be handled with your credit card. Smaller items and tips can be handled with EGP. Take an extra bag to bring back souvenirs !😊 The Egyptian people were very excited to see us and warmly welcomed us. However, we soon realized that many of them made their living from tips. The local vendors were notorious for asking for tips. Our AP crew did a good job at minimizing our exposure to this, but the locals are relentless. We were isolated from this with respect to anything involved with the hotels and restaurants, which provided a hassle-free haven. AP suggested an overall tip amount for these services, which seemed odd at first, but after considering the fact that this eliminated the need for constant tipping in these areas, we were very favorable of providing the overall tip. As a parting note…..Who knew that snake charmers were a real thing? They are at the Kom Ombo Temple!

“Outstanding!” is the first word that comes to mind to describe our trip, Egypt Undiscovered, under the aegis of Archaeological Paths. It was extremely well managed so that all we had to concentrate on was experiencing the sights. Even unforeseeable glitches like traffic jams were efficiently dealt with. Anyway, we got to Cairo after around 16 hours of flying, making connections, etc. As promised, we were met at the airport by two of the people from Archaeological Paths, and brought to the hotel, which was quite swank overall. After settling in to our suite we went to a meeting with our three guides, Amr, Mo and Max and the rest of the group of 15. Seven were from Hong Kong, and one from Belgium who had already been to Egypt a dozen or so times; the rest were Americans. We quickly bonded. I kept a journal to record each day’s activities, which all went like clockwork thanks to the work of the guides who were extremely attentive. Our lead guide, Amr, had a great sense of humor plus a degree in Egyptology and did a fantastic job shepherding us along, pointing out the more interesting features of each place and explaining what it all meant. We saw so much it’s all kind of a blur of tombs, temples, pyramids, museums, etc. and I’d be typing all day to do it justice, so I’ll just go into a few of the highlights. Karnack and Luxor were spectacular, and apart from the ravages of time and vandalism by religious fanatics in the fourth through seventh centuries, largely intact. It was amazing that people, without cranes or even wheels, could do it all, such as carving and then raising a 250 ton granite obelisk. The underground tombs were surprisingly hot and humid because of all the heat absorbed by the stone they were carved out of. We had special permission to visit two active excavation sites which are otherwise off limits to the public. We first met Dr. Zahi Hawass at the one he was doing in the Valley of the Monkeys, so named because of the tomb decorations in one burial there. A small row of houses that were for the workers was uncovered, and he said they were on the verge of finding an unopened tomb. He did two more later lectures for us and we got to have photos with him. He is as friendly and pleasant as he is on TV. The other site was serendipitously timed. Dr. Mostafa Waziry, a rising star in archaeology, said they had uncovered an unopened tomb and invited us to accompany him for the unsealing. It involved sitting in a metal chair and being lowered by hand down a shaft. The ceiling in the cave that led to the tomb was only around four feet high, so we had to crouch to get to the spot, which has sealed by 3000 year old mud bricks. We were asked to pray along with them and then they removed a half-dozen or so of them and the doctor peered in; something was there and they all excitedly congratulated themselves. One by one we crawled over to get a look; since we all promised not to reveal what we saw, I’ll refrain from giving the details; suffice it to say it was an archaeological rush! I could go on, but you get the idea. As for modern Egypt, the people are very friendly and it was common for groups of kids to shout, “Welcome to Egypt!” When we said we were Americans they were even more enthusiastic and rushed up to high-five and take selfies with us. In the cities most people, including women, dress in western clothes; hajibs were few and far between, and while most wore head scarves, some didn’t; most of the younger ones wore make-up. They practice a tolerant and moderate form of Islam, and we even saw a Christian church next to a mosque; we visited one of the latter during mid-day prayers, which was interesting. The government seems to be investing in infrastructure such as adequate housing (Cairo and Alexandria are chock full of high-rise apartment buildings), providing affordable food, universal education and family planning; the country is overpopulated and there is a lot of migration to the cities; Cairo has approximately 23 million people. Traffic is an absolute nightmare, with every conceivable type of vehicle plus donkey carts and pedestrians all crowding the roadways in a state of anarchy; for example, it is common for vehicles to drive between the traffic lines on two lane roads, making them into three lanes that way. Somehow the bus driver was able to maneuver through it all, including narrow side streets. The food was good and abundant, pretty much typical Middle Eastern fare such as humus, babaganoush, kabobs, etc. with some Egyptian specialties; most places served alcohol for the westerners, which was a bit expensive since it’s heavily taxed. We both gained a bit of weight, despite all the walking. Egypt is much safer than the USA when it comes to terrorist attacks; while we were there we heard the news about another school shooting in California, and when we got home there were two others. Security is very good and we felt quite secure. All the sites are well guarded; there is a lot of police presence, and you have to walk through a metal detector to get into hotels. In addition, while traveling through a relatively desolate stretch of desert we were accompanied front and rear by both the police and the army, and there was an armed guard on the bus. They are doing everything possible to protect tourists and leaving nothing to chance. The tourism industry was their largest and employed 12% of the workforce; it’s slowly coming back, but has a long way to go; I hope it picks up. As mentioned above the hotels were, for the most part, quite nice in the larger cities, whereas the ones in the smaller and more out of the way places, while the best in town, were not as posh and more reminiscent of older hotel chains in the USA. Keeping in mind that Egypt is a developing country, the toilet facilities in the remoter spots were somewhat challenging by western standards and it’s advisable to carry some toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Where there are attendants, a small tip of say 10 Egyptian pounds or a US dollar is a nice good will gesture; the same applies to bellhops, otherwise all other tipping is handled by Archaeological Paths. Miscellaneous: While we changed around $200, US dollars are accepted as a de facto second currency. There’s a lot of walking and stairs, so be sure to wear the right footwear; I found my previously broken-in sneakers did the trick. Be sure to wear a broad-brimmed hat. Carry a small pocket flashlight. Enjoy!

We just had the best tour of Egypt EVER! Recommend it highly. Archeological Paths, the tour group, organized an awesome 2-week vacation in a first-class (5-star) hotel in Cairo and a luxurious boat trip on the Nile. Not only did we visit many of the top ancient sites, but we were permitted exclusive visits to the Sphinx, in the morning, and Luxor Temple, at night (when it is illuminated), when there are no other tourists. We also met Dr. Zahi Hawass, the premier Egyptologist, who gave presentations about his work throughout the trip. The tour also included tea/coffee with the gracious Mrs. Jehan Sadat in her elegant home. She talked about her life and work and shared her memories of her husband’s decision to pursue a peace agreement and dedication to Middle East peace. A most unique and enriching event. The Archaeological Path’s trip took care of all meals and all our needs, supplied water and security. The staff was exceptional getting us quickly through passport control and customs in Cairo. The logistics worked very well, even when early morning departures were needed. There was always a full breakfast and dinner. Although most of the tour participants were our age (mature), younger people on the trip (our grown children and their spouses) were able to do everything they wanted and got along with everyone. The trip was a bargain for the price and better than advertised. We plan to take other trips offered by this company.

The Royal Tour to Egypt was a dream come true and the trip of a lifetime! The Archaeological Paths personnel were great to work with, both the office personnel and the tour guides. Getting to meet and talk to Dr. Zahi Hawass, Dr. Mustafa Waziri, and Mrs. Jehan Sadat were great experiences I'll never forget. Touring the sights of Egypt with Ahmed and Kamila made the history of Egypt come alive. The special access and early entry ahead of the general crowds into many of the sites allowed our group to visit without being bunched together or being rushed through the areas. Mahalo Nui Loa (thank you very much) to Archaeological Paths!

My wife and I travelled with 4 other couples on the Royal Egypt Tour in November, 2019. We had an amazing experience. Archaeologicalpaths does an excellent job of preparing and coordinating every aspect of the trip. Our tour guide and assistant teamed up to make everything very easy for us. The guide was more than knowledgeable on Egyptian history. He was also very helpful in conveying life in current Egypt. His wonderful personality made the trip fun for all of us. Best tour guide we have ever encountered. Extra steps were taken to assure our security. We were virtually never without security personnel throughout our stay. There was never a single security issue. The two hotels were truly 5 stars both in terms of the facilities and service. There were a few areas that were disappointing and should be addressed by Archaeologicalpaths. The information we relied upon when booking the trip indicated the tour group size would be limited to 25 - 30 people. Instead, our group had more than 40 people which had certain negative impacts on site visits (for instance, we could not all get into one of the sites where Dr. Hawass was speaking). We were also disappointed at the very late news (well after paying deposits) that additional sites were available at an additional cost. When we originally signed on we were convinced that we would be seeing “the best of the best”. To learn much later in the process that there were certain superior options was disappointing. We suggest that all the options and the costs be listed at the beginning. The only other somewhat negative reaction was to the LaFayan ship. It might have been all there was available at the time, but it certainly was not up to the standards at the hotels. Since over half of our tour involved being on the ship we would have had a more enjoyable experience on a higher end ship. Despite these few areas of concern......which we offer as ways to make the tour even better.....our overall experience was wonderful. Without question, it ranks up with the best travel experiences we have ever had. We will not hesitate to recommend this tour.

We would like to thank you sincerely for taking your time to share your thoughts about the Royal Egypt Tour in which you participated. We always appreciate every comment made by our tour guests as it helps us improve our future services. Also, we would like to thank you for choosing Archaeological Paths and for participation in the Royal Egypt Tour, which indisputably provides the most complex and unique travel itinerary on the market. With so many exclusive visits to the most famous places in Egypt, special entrances to sites closed to the public and participation of the world-renown guests such as Dr. Zahi Hawass, Dr. Mostafa Waziri and Madam Sadat, our guests have the chance to live through a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the Land of the Pharaohs. We are then glad that you also enjoyed your Royal Egypt Tour experience. However, in your review you have raised a few issues which we would like to address in more detail as transparency of our offer is very important to our company. In there you have mentioned the number of participants on your particular tour. Our company offers two group size options for guests who would like to travel with us to Egypt: standard, which can accommodate approximately between 25 to 35 members, and private, which is always limited to 18 participants. For those guests who value their privacy and would like to have more intimate experience on our Royal Egypt Tour, we recommend signing up on a private edition. Having said that, we very much appreciate your opinion about the size of the group and we would like to ensure you that we have already taken certain steps to meet our guests’ expectations in that regard. Similarly to the private edition of the Royal Egypt Tour, we are planning to introduce an exact limit of places on the standard edition so our future guests could have a more precise idea as to how many people can be expected in their group. We hope that this adjustment will make the Royal Egypt Tour with Dr. Zahi Hawass even more enjoyable and comfortable for our guests. In your review there was also a mention about additional attractions which were organized around the main itinerary. As you are aware, the main tour package already includes the most elite, complex and unique tour program in comparison to all other itineraries among various tours to Egypt available on the market. With our company, our guests can enter the greatest pyramid in the world – the Great Pyramid of Khufu – without other tourists inside. Due to special permissions granted by the Minister of Antiquities, they can visit all the chambers inside the pyramid that are closed to tourists. Also, only with us will they have an exclusive access to the Tombs of the Pyramid Builders at Giza – an extraordinary site discovered by Dr. Zahi Hawass. Since this site is still an active excavation site, it has never been opened to the public. Once again, all those unique visits are part of our main itinerary. However, since our guests are very often a huge archaeology fans, we always try to go beyond and above in order to satisfy their needs. That is why we offer some additional and optional attractions which are available only to the guests of Archaeological Paths. It is then important to say that those are not standard and granted attractions as for each such entry to site or a tomb closed to the general public we need to receive a permission from the Minister of Antiquities. This is the reason why we are not able to inform our guests earlier than 3 or 4 months in advance about the special entrances options. Sometimes the permission is granted and sometimes it is not (every site may be closed at any given moment for excavations/renovation works, etc.). When the special permissions for specific places are confirmed, we send that information to our guests. Each special entrance permission is an extra cost and the money paid to the Ministry for it is collected to help restore the monuments and finance next excavation projects carried out all over the country. Therefore, our guests’ participation in our special entrances supports directly the archaeology and monuments in Egypt. Each special entrance permission can be revoked by the Ministry at any time without any explanation given. We also do not inform our guests about the special entrances availability earlier than 4 months before the tour, because we do not want to be promising something that we are not certain of. Archaeological Paths does not have any direct influence over the permissions. We kindly ask the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities whether it would be possible to grant an access to archaeological sites to a limited group of people. Archaeological Paths always does its best to be as transparent as possible. All information about the main itinerary is presented on our website, in our travel brochures and during the booking process. We listen to our customers’ requests and we try to offer even more for the fans of archeology who would like to visit even more extraordinary sites in their free time. Finally, we also would like to thank you for your notes about the Le Fayan cruise ship on which you spent your Nile adventure. Please be assured that we will pass your observations to our Egyptian staff, who will investigate further the quality and standard on Le Fayan. At the same time it must be pointed out that Le Fayan is one of the newest and most luxurious cruise ships in Egypt. Once again, we would like to thank you for choosing Archaeological Paths and for your kind words about this very unique tour with Dr. Zahi Hawass, Dr. Mostafa Waziri and our special guest, Madam Sadat. To hear from you that this tour was one of your “best travel experiences” is the main reason why we organize those tours and why we do our best to make this product so unique and special. We hope you took back home many beautiful memories from Egypt. We also encourage everyone to see our day-by-day video reports from Egypt. The videos are available at Archaeological Paths’ website - in Reviews & Video Blog section. Every day of our tour has been documented and presented in movies where, along with the tour guide introduction, our guests have their say on what they experienced. The movies depict all you can encounter on the Royal Egypt Tours with Archaeological Paths and Dr. Zahi Hawass. Archaeological Paths Team

Archaeological Paths is about crafting utterly original, lavish, and extraordinary travel experiences.

We believe that traveling is not just about seeing and doing. It is about embracing a spirit of magic and wonder. Two decades of sharing our passion and unparalleled expertise have proven that, for our luxury journeys and tailor-made experiences, the sky’s the limit.

However, our mission is not only to create unmatched travel experiences, but also to make a real difference in the world of science and archaeology.

We pair our travel experiences with supporting the preservation of places we visit so that they remain vibrant and intact for generations to come. We sponsor archaeological research , excavations and restoration works across Egypt. We are an active supporter of Dr. Zahi Hawass’ large-scale excavation projects at the most significant sites in Egypt, such as the Valley of the Kings.

In 2019, Archaeological Paths organized a media event celebrating Dr. Hawass’ research and discoveries for that year. The highlight of the event was the announcement of a new tomb found by Dr. Hawass – KV65. The discovery made headlines all around the world. The event was attended by renowned archaeologists, ambassadors, ministers, as well as Archaeological Paths’ tour guests.

Thanks to Archaeological Paths, we are able to reveal the glory and secrets of the Valley of the Kings. I do believe that the name of Archaeological Paths should go down in history, written in gold, for its contribution to promoting the legacy of ancient Egypt. — Dr. Zahi Hawass

Projekt bez nazwy(2)

Archaeological Paths has been actively sharing the latest research and discoveries by copublishing and sponsoring a number of publications on ancient Egypt.

We are the main sponsor of exclusive books written by Dr. Zahi Hawass , including A Secret Voyage and The Legend of Tutankhamun , which celebrate the sublime world of ancient Egypt. Both books are limited editions – only 750 copies of A Secret Voyage and 999 copies of The Legend of Tutankhamun were printed. The books were gifted to leaders in archaeology, business, and politics, including US President Barack Obama , Queen Sophia of Spain, the royal family of Qatar and the director of the British Museum, Neil MacGregor.

We also support local charity programs, produce TV documentaries and organize scientific conferences, world lecture tours and exhibitions.

Archaeological Paths’ team was involved in the production of Discovery Channel’s live program in which explorer Josh Gates and Egyptologist Dr. Zahi Hawass explored a remote burial site and its deep tunnels underground in Middle Egypt. Audiences from around the world witnessed history as Dr. Hawass uncovered the 2,500-year-old mummy of a high priest.

Over the years Archaeological Paths has become one of the biggest supporters and advocates of Egypt in the United States.

In 2019, Archaeological Paths launched an advertising campaign in the very heart of New York City . One of the largest, most eye-catching digital billboards in the center of Times Square promoted our tours to Egypt with Dr. Zahi Hawass. The campaign’s kickoff was attended by John Rogers, Executive Vice President of the Goldman Sachs Group, Hani Nagi, Deputy Consul General of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and archaeologists from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 2023, Archaeological Paths organized Dr. Zahi Hawass’ 2023 US Grand Lecture Tour , the most extensive lecture tour on history and archaeology to date. During these events, Dr. Hawass unveiled his latest groundbreaking discoveries and research live on stage for the first time, captivating nearly 30,000 attendees across 23 major cities in the United States

Egypt has magic and gives you the thrill of new discoveries. All of this you can experience only with Archaeological Paths.

"Egypt has magic. I could see it in the hearts of the people that I met during Archaeological Paths   tours in the last few years. On the last day of their tour to Egypt, I could see that people were crying because they were leaving the magic of the ancient Egypt behind. This is why I'm inviting you on this beautiful tour with Archaeological Paths . It is a great tour company, because you will be able to see many unique sites that actually very few people can see. You’ll be treated like royalty, this is why we call it the Royal Tour. Come and see for yourself – you will be in good hands and you will have a great time with Archaeological Paths ."
