Bought £200 worth of Euros

Went to Asda in Spondon, Derby. Exchanged 200 pound for euros. No questions asked, nothing explained. When i got home I found out that the lady charge me for exchange fees. How can you charge someone without explanation? Will never use their service ever again.

21 February 2024

Ordered a currency card

I put £200.00 in my travel card went to make sure that it had gone onto the card but the money is nowhere to be seen contacted card services who then contacted Travelex and still no sign of the money, I have contacted my bank they are now looking into this.

28 January 2024

Bought travel money

Ordered local currency for Barbados. Ordered on Monday and told it would be a few days and we would be phoned. Not heard anything so went in Friday - going away next Thursday, nothing arrived. Telephone call Saturday afternoon to say they can’t get any! Very unreliable!

15 January 2024

Bought £50 worth of Euros

Got my travel money card today, and it was a piece of cake with the help of Millie in the Spondon branch. Any worries were put at ease, so helpful in how to setup it up and knowing how I can use the card when aboard. I was really happy with the service provided.

Bought £100 worth of Euros

quick straight forward service

18 December 2023

Bought £1 worth of US dollars

This is the fourth time I have attempted to use the service in Asda Fareham, as it is the only place within a few miles that sells foreign currency. 3 pre ordered and today randomly.

Each and every time there has been a note to say just popped out, be back at a certain time and this is not usually between 12 & 2. It is usually just after 3pm for pre ordered. Today, I randomly popped in at 12.20 and once again, there was a note to say that the person has popped out and will be back at 12.50. Surely if their website displays opening times, a member of staff should be there to serve customers or they should display opening hours open and not actually on lunch or gone out etc…it’s not cheap to keep having to drive backwards and forwards, 6 miles to be precise to not be able to get the money ordered or even randomly. Asda, this needs sorting out!

Had to put in an amount that I supposedly purchased to leave review.

7 November 2023

Like Sue Williams says on her review I was charged a buy back fee without an explanation.

As a pensioner £2.99 Charge for nothing is better in my pocket.

I was so mad I went back the next day. The same girl said I always explain this Charge!

Not to me you didn't as we never return Euros.

I insisted on having the money back, which she finally agreed to.

3 November 2023

Bought £500 worth of Euros

Had a great experience in the Blackburn asda with the help of a lovely women Heena. Was a great help with everything as it was my first time exchanging money. Great customer service from her. Would definitely recommend to go to the Blackburn asda will be going again.

29 October 2023

Bought £250 worth of Euros

I always go to the bureau in clayton green, I always get good service from the two ladies there, I got tips etc about where I was going last time and its always service with a smile and welcoming

21 October 2023

Bought £1 worth of Euros

Went to Asda Tamworth the customer service was diabolical there were two people serving behind the counter , neither of them had any customer service skills tutting because I queried the exchange rate no please and thank yous .. apparently they don’t accept Scottish

£20 even though it’s legal tender. Will avoid from now on and go where I’m welcome

What ever you do don’t get one of these Asda travel money cards. Ive waited over 4 days to get a response to an email regarding a problem registering my card. I’ve sent all information requested and yet I’m still waiting. I’m starting to panic as I’m getting low on cash. Dreadful customer service you try finding numbers from abroad. Trying that this doesn’t ruin holiday.

21 September 2023

Sold 500 US dollars

I went to Asda exchange some US Dollars to pounds today just after 5pm. The gentleman who was serving did not seem to be professional at all. I gave him the dollars, he counted, asked for ID, gave him ID, then he looked into his till, and he said to me he does not have enough money to exchange. He could only exchange half of it. This is an exchange place and they did not have money. They need more professional people there. Disappointed. This guy was not fit for the job. Sorry.

7 September 2023

Bought £250 worth of Danish kroner

Turned up to collect currency I ordered 4 days prior. I arranged to collect the travel money at 2.56pm and was told I couldn’t have it till after 3. Won’t used Asda again and staff was cocky

Asda Travel Money Card

19 August 2023

Fairly smooth so far. Got card at Asda store (in store at counter it was pre loaded with €500). When I got home I simply loaded app and logged in using same details I shared in store with holiday counter)

If you load with extra money make sure it’s in over £500 batches to avoid charges. Exchange rates are good - better than in store and similar to exchange rates daily (around 5% less than international rate - which is better than any UK in store purchase)

You can easily access on iPhone and check amount and transfer more from bank account if needed. In Europe it will work for most contactless payments and no charges because it’s euro for euro. Great for transactions in Europe and if other you can transfer ‘ switch currencies to preferred country.

Sue Williams

3 August 2023

Bought £371 worth of Euros

Popped in for 400 euros, paid then seen the receipt, I’d been charged £4.99 in fees, never again, the person serving never explained the charge, apparently to buy back the euros…why. Never ever again

AVOID AT ALL COST

Have an ongoing case from Oct 2017. They are asking me to provide medical documents that do not exist as all that was called was an ambulance and I was never treated for anything. I have spoken to 3 different people and waited weeks just to get the same response. It is not worth the aggravation, and I have still made no progress or got a final answer in 8 months. Never again.

I had a Heart Attack in Athens

I had a Heart Attack in Athens and I cannot thank ASDA Travel Insurance enough for what happened next The hotel sent me to a private clinic. I have no idea how much it cost because the clinic dealt directly with ASDA Travel Insurance We had quite an expensive hotel, it was a great deal when I booked it on the internet months ago but when we asked to stay longer it was at normal rates. Again no idea how much it cost because ASDA Travel Insurance paid that bill too Normally one can fly 10 days after an angioplasty, although the doctor had given me permission to fly the insurance company wanted one more test done first. The result, another few days in Athens at their expense Finally they sent a doctor to accompany me home Business Class BA, with an ambulance to bring me to my door from the airport On top of this they covered my wife’s hotel bill whilst I was in the hospital and paid for her flight too You never really know how good insurance is until you need it. In the case of ASDA Travel Insurance, they were brilliant. I had no fuss and no stress Thank you ASDA, you made things so much easier

Don’t bother with this insurance company!

We’ve just sent this to Asda Travel after purchasing their most expensive premium and curtailing our travel from Spain! A total waste of a lot of money! ‘This is why people think insurance companies are a waste of time! We’ve waited months for this news! We curtailed our travels because of advice from the FCO and the fear of losing the insurance we paid a lot of money for! We’d still be travelling if this hadn’t happened and our journey home would not have been the highly expensive route we had no option but to take! We’re disgusted! As per your extremely bad reviews on line we will never use you again or recommend you to anyone else’! Needless to say we got nothing!

absolutely useless, waste of money

absolutely useless waste of money. I got my ticket cancelled from KLM and rebooked for the next day (in 24 h after original ticket), it caused me to lose my bus ticket I booked in the country of destination (and its impossible to rebook the ticket for the next day now bcz in Ukraine its Christmas on 7 of Jan so everything is booked about a month in advance!). Moreover, I have lost my appointment to dentist on Friday and the earliest I will be able to see him is just on the next Tuesday (again bcz of Christmas holidays). Absolutely destroyed plans and holidays vacations! When I called to Asda Insurance they said its not their problem and I should contact the provider ....the most waisted £15 I have ever spent ! Account issues & no customer service

After loading my card with over €500 in the weeks leading up to my holiday I found that I couldn’t log into the account. I contacted customer services to be told that the account was showing as closed with zero balance, this was a Friday night & I flew out in the early hours of Sunday morning. I was told my complaint would be resolved within 24 hours and I’d receive an email or call to update me. I received an email the following day closing my complaint but still couldn’t log in, many lengthy calls (some from Spain whilst I was on holiday) over the following days and the issue still stood. After checking the account daily I finally found I could log into my account & my balance had reappeared on the Tuesday, no call or email from them. I raised a further complaint on my return with an auto email stating 1-2 days response lead time. I received an email 2 weeks later letting me know my account was showing as open & active so they hadn’t bothered actually reading my complaint. Shocking service & could have easily ruined the first 2 days of my holiday, avoid!!

Don’t buy this

Don’t buy this - couldn’t be more disappointed. My mother was hospitalised in Vietnam and had To travel there to bring her home. Customer service is deplorable and gave a level of service that has left me shocked. They contributed to the stress of the situation rather than alleviating it. They made it impossible for me to deal with from Vietnam so had to get someone in the uk to sit through the 20mins plus to talk to anyone as they wouldn’t respond to emails. I can not advise you strongly enough to not buy this product.

200 euro note !!!

Disappointed to find a 200 euro note in the travel money I collected today. Who on earth would spend near equivalent of nearly £200 note? Is there any shop or restaurant that would even accept it? I asked the lady in the bureau to exchange it and she said she couldn't as I'd ordered the money online. I just had to accept it! Rubbish service and a compliant on the way to them now.

Poorly designed app and information

I wanted to top-up my Asda Travel Card with Euros using the phone app for the first time. By mistake I selected 'move funds' instead of 'top-up', 'Move Money' is the phrase used in my banking app when I want to pay money which I think is why I made the error. I ended up transferring all my existing Euros to US Dollars. I thought I could easily correct this mistake as the Asda Travel Money Card instructions claim you can move money between currency wallets for no fee so I transferred the dollars back to the currency I wanted - Euros. This mistake cost me over 10% of the Euro funds I started with. This was all done within a short time. So much for free transfers between wallets. They should add that you will be charged their exchange rate on the day of transfer. Unlike banking apps there aren't any clear checks asking you to confirm what you may or may not want to do and what the cost will be. Very poor.

What a nightmare company

What a nightmare company. They are using Covid as an excuse for the delay in paying out. I had 2 claims, one was because we had to cut short holiday by 3 nights as Givernment advised us to go home. We sent claim in on 26th March. They dont bother answering e mails. They eventually messaged to ask for bank details for the first claim which we have given but not received payment. They then asked us if holiday co had offered us vouchers or if we tried to claim through our credit card! NO that is why you have insurance isnt it. I responded and now have to wait another 45 days for them to reply. Its absurd and they shouldnt be able to get away with it.

Date of experience : 06 September 2020

Very poor treatment of claims

Very poor treatment of claims. One time, they had mistaken the country and currency of my claim. For another claim due to a ski injury, it took them 5 months to assess the claim and they still made mistakes. I had to keep asking for updates for them to finally start to assess my claim. They are asking for further documents which they already have in their possession. It is endless and this is not even a massive claim (less £300), I still have not been compensated properly. I cannot imagine what it would be for a more substantial claim. I would really avoid contracting an insurance with them and will definitely not renew my policy.

Date of experience : 16 August 2018

Very poor service and left me with no travel money!

Do not bother. Ordered LEV in good time. Informed to collect. Went to collect LEV and they closed the Travel Money counter. No Asda colleagues could aid. Staff shortage or sickness. Called the call centre given, fobbed off, even asked me IF I could drive 30 miles to nearest open counter! Had to urgently seek alternative money bureau. It then took Asda to refund me MY money 10 working days! No apology and my written complaint was acknowledged BUT ignored. PLEASE do not use Asda for your travel money!

Tried to top up the card on my App but will not go through (been trying to do this over a week). Cannot Top up online. Really disappointed with this card as the lady in store said how amazing it was and we could Top up in any country. In store rates are also different to App. Now going to find another card that will allow us to do the above. Rubbish.

I registered my card on the app as…

I registered my card on the app as instructed. Once I’d done this I wasn’t able to login the app. I rang customer service to be told that they didn’t know why this was but I could login to the website. This was true but once in the website there’s not a lot you can do. I couldn’t even revel my pin. I rang customer services again and they didn’t resolve the problem. The outcome is I’m going to have to go to a an Asda branch and withdraw the money over the counter.

Claims service is a disgrace.. 6 months on and no answer!

my flight back from New Zealand was cancelled when Oz temporarily suspended transit flights ( was going via Sydney) That was on 23rd March 2020. It is now 23rd Sept .. a full 6 months on and I am still awaiting a decision on my claim. To date they have initially failed to log my claim ( admin error so they tell me) , i re sent it immediately ti be told that it would be at least 28 working days before they got to it....then had email saying there was no attachment... spoke to them and they apologised saying yes they can see it now!..Have rung them countless times to be told it would be escalated... and then prioritised....but still to hear from them. I raised a complaint, but 4 weeks letter got letter sayibg sorry cant deal with your complaint inside the 56 day time period!. Still waiting!!.. Having read these reviews it would have been nice to think someone from ASDA would be reviewing negaitive social media content like this... but doesnt look like they care Avoid at all costs

Watch out for auto-renewals even after you cancel

Took out travel insurance with them for a one year policy in 2017. Under the small print of the policy, this auto-renews every year. In 2018 I contacted them to confirm I wanted to cancel the policy and had to wait for the money to be refunded. Now they have just done the same thing again and have charged me to renew a policy which I have already cancelled. Completely unacceptable.

Asda provides a price match guarantee on local bureau de change orders. This does not apply to online orders. Here’s what Asda says about their exchange rate guarantee (ERG):

  • ERG is subject to rate verification, applies only to transactions where you are exchanging Pounds Sterling for personal use into any of the foreign currencies sold and in stock at the time of purchase. Excludes Sterling products. Not available in conjunction with any other offer related to exchange rates.
  • ERG is only available at the in-store Travel Money bureau. The 5 miles are measured from the Asda Store address using the AA Route Planner.
  • We will not refund your transaction to offer you a better rate if you try to use the Asda Rate Guarantee after you have purchased your foreign currency from us.
  • ERG applies to competitor exchange rates available in the ordinary course of business and does not apply to exchange rates which are only available to staff.”

Asda exchange rates may vary whether you are buying in-store, online or over the phone.

Asda Money Transfer Fees & Exchange Rates

Asda Travel Money does charge fees for some specific services, like certain activities on their travel card or for international money transfers. In most cases, they make their money on the difference between the “base,” interbank* exchange rate and the exchange rate that they charge to you.

*The interbank rate is also known as the mid-market or standard exchange rate, which is the midpoint between the buying and the selling prices of the two currencies.

Asda Travel Money Money Card Fees

  • There is no fee added by Asda for topping up your travel card with a debit or credit card.
  • If an ATM withdrawal or point of sale transaction is made in a currency which is different to the currency on the card, the foreign exchange rate used is the rate determined by Mastercard on the day of the transaction plus a foreign exchange fee of 5.75%.

Customer Satisfaction

Asda Money scored very poorly for customer satisfaction on Trustpilot, achieving a score of just 1.5 out of 5 across 50 reviews. Two percent of reviews said that they were “excellent” or “great” compared to ninety-seven percent of reviews that said they were “poor” or “bad.” Note that these reviews were across Asda Money as a whole, not just for travel money or currency or online overseas transfers.

There was only one positive review, which said that Asda was better than another supermarket money provider.

There were numerous negative reviews including problems with the travel card, poor customer service and issues with account closure. Here’s an exam-le of a review, “Ordered travel money (Turkish Lira). Paid for it. Checked the next day as I still hadn't received a confirmation email to be greeted with a message that said your order has been cancelled and suggested it was a card fault and I should try again with a different card. I rang my bank and there wasn't an issue with my card.”

How Asda Travel Money works

To pick up money from a travel store, you will need to provide:

  • The payment card you used to place the order
  • Valid photo ID, either a passport, full UK photographic driving licence or EU ID card, which matches the details of the cardholder

Here’s how to make a money transfer:

  • Log into your profile
  • Choose who and where you’re sending money to
  • How much you’d like to send and how they’ll receive it
  • Pay using a debit card
  • Your money transfer is on its way

Here are the beneficiary details you’ll need:

  • Your recipient’s first name and last name as displayed on their officially-issued ID.
  • Your recipient’s address and phone number.
  • A selected method for how your recipient will receive the money transfer. If you choose to deposit money directly into your recipient’s account, you’ll need their bank account and routing number (this might be called an IBAN or SWIFT number).
  • If you would rather have your recipient pick up the money in person, you’ll need to select a local, preferred payout location.
