travel almanac magazine

Founded in 2010, The Travel Almanac  is the first true post-tourism publication . It focuses not only on the traditional notion of physical travel, but the ways in which movement and location permeate all aspects of contemporary life. Since its inception, The Travel Almanac has been influential in re-defining the genre of pop-culture publications by showcasing the creative world’s opinions on travel and its accoutrement.

Since its inception, TTA has featured exclusive contributions by some of the most creative minds of our time, such as Harmony Korine, Collier Schorr, Richard Prince, Juergen Teller, Taryn Simon, Julia Hetta, Inez & Vinoodh, Jeremy Scott, Ryan McGinley, William Gibson, Viviane Sassen, Matthew Barney, Helmut Lang and many others.

TTA is published bi-annually and combines the immediacy and visibility of a magazine with the longevity and elegance of a book. Starting with issue 10, some of our releases include an edition of The Travel Diary , an art booklet that showcases new work of one select artist, rethinking the concept of traveling and displaying a unique sensitivity to their surroundings.

 The Travel Almanac – Issue 22 – Summer 2023 – GUDBERG NERGER

The Travel Almanac – Issue 22

by The Travel Almanac

The Travel Almanac explores the topics of traveling and temporary habitation from the personal perspectives of innovative figures in the fashion, music, art, and film worlds. Addressing an increasingly mobilized creative community, it is the first publication of its kind to speak to this sophisticated generation of travelers. The plurality of this community inspires the magazine to focus on individual’s personal experiences, and the effects of travel on their lives and work.

The 22nd edition of The Travel Almanac themed “Performance” includes a treasure trove of iconic personalities and their very own adventurous journeys. Among them, innovative and visceral choreographer Damien Jalet who describes a yearning for balance between control and no control, celebrated painter Elizabeth Peyton, in discussion with Italian director Luca Guadagnino, reflects on the act of persevering while underperforming, and how this can lead to the most unexpected of results. Activist, artist and bewitching vocalist ANOHNI dives deep into the inspirations for her highly anticipated new album and shares advice on keeping the performance private, while rising art star Esben Weile Kjær identifies the performative potential of staged disasters and repurposed media for his artistic output. Last, but by no means least, in conversation with friend and collaborator Shygirl, TTA is proud to present Lourdes Leon, who reveals how shows of royal pedigree have instilled in her the very highest of standards in regard to the art of performance. These are just some of the captivating ideas and guests that are being entertained in this edition of The Travel Almanac.

On Holiday With: Paul Kominek, The Travel Alamanac

This Monday morning we’re in sunny Germany, and we’re taking our final holiday break with Paul Kominek of The Travel Almanac . The pocket-sized magazine fashions itself as the first ‘post-tourism’ travel publication, and its content focuses on the increasingly mobile lifestyle of the creative community.

TTA9-Cover-HiRes

Tell us about your first holiday. It was a trip to Yugoslavia. I almost drowned in the sea, got stung in the throat by a bee and after we got robbed at a gas-station, the camping cooker exploded. I was 5 years old.

Are you a beach holiday or city break person? I don’t really do holidays, traveling is mostly project-related, so cities are more often on the agenda then beaches. However, my most memorable beach trip so far was in 2008, when I first visited the then still less frequented beaches of Tulum in Mexico. The city experience that made the biggest impression on me was a completely overwhelming Jakarta in 2007.

TTA6spread9

How has travelling changed over the last ten years, and how does The Travel Almanac reflect these changes? ‘Post-Tourism’ in our eyes refers to a whole complex of travel-related developments in recent years, where tourism has evolved beyond pure consumption of sceneries into a more immersive way of traveling. One example of a ‘Post-Tourism’ concept that has become fairly common in recent years is that of travelers temporarily inhabiting locations for a few months at a time, eschewing sightseeing in favor of gradually absorbing a culture over time. We try to comply with this concept by avoiding practical travel advice in favor of a more metaphysical type of guidance.

Travel Almanac pair

What do you look for in your cover stars? We are generally interested in people who rethink the concept of traveling and perceive their environments in a unique way. We like to speak with individuals whose work displays a sensitivity to their surroundings and hope that the choice of our covers stars exemplifies the wide range of ways in which this topic can be discussed.

Where will you be taking a break this year? I am looking forward to return to a dramatic little mountain village at the edge of the Provence called Mons.

travel almanac magazine

Travel and photography go together like coffee and cream. In the past few years, we’ve witnessed a rise of Insta-famous travelers who use a combination of sponsorships, frugality and trust funds to document jealousy inducing trips around the world. But the trend of the itinerant millennial has also paved the way for niche print publications that combine great design with beautiful photography.

We’re not saying that the travel magazine stalwarts like Travel+Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler and National Geographic don’t feature great photography (they most certainly do), but here’s a few titles from the road less traveled. You probably won’t find them at your nearest airport so head on over to the most interesting bookstore you can find.

Founding Editor-in-Chief Serena Guen created Suitcase , the “multi-media” publication, while attending NYU. Part fashion, part travel, the publication features a lot of young talent like Emily Isa Baker , Teal Thomsen , and Lilli Kad .

Published quarterly

Suitcase Magazine

The Travel Almanac

The Travel Almanac’s highfalutin about page declares the journal as “the first true post-tourism publication.” Printed on heavy stock with a beautiful portrait on the cover, the magazine features interviews with photographic luminaries like Alec Soth, Richard Prince, and Juergen Teller. Oh, and it also has some nifty photography by founder/DJ (of course he’s a DJ) Paul Kominek and Sara Katrine Thiesen .

Published bi-annually.

The Travel Almanac

Another Escape

Another Escape hails itself as “ outdoor lifestyle, creative culture and sustainable living publication that explores the stories of passionate people, alluring landscapes and intriguing ideas.” In addition to all the words du jour , the magazine features some pretty legit photography by Jody Daunton , Aaron Sami , and Dawn Chapman .

Another Escape Magazine

Forget traversing multiple locations, Nomas only covers one location per issue and you’ll like it that way! The Athens-based Aestetik design studio produces the rag on 120gr Munken Polar paper to remind you that this is an object of permanence and not some cheap brochure.

Nomas Magazine

Sidetracked

Personal stories accompanied by nifty photos with an adventure focus? Sidetracked is the cool kids magazine where fashion is strictly functional, and the only nightcap you’ll be having is the wool beanie on your head. Bad-assed photography by people like Jay Kolsch , Martin Hartley , and Jody MacDonald .

Published tri-annually.

Sidetracked magazine

A reimagining of the old Holiday magazine that ran from 1946-1977, the new incarnation is the child of Parisian art director Franck Durand. Bold photography and design bring both travel and fashion into view twice a year featuring the photography of Karim Sadli , Olivier Kervern , and Hyungsik Kim .
