The Ataris Announce 'So Long Astoria' 10-Year Anniversary Tour; Share Exclusive Promo Video

For the first time in a decade, the Ataris will tour with the lineup that brought them mainstream notoriety, playing their breakthrough album “So Long Astoria” in its entirety.

Beginning Feb. 28, frontman Kristopher Roe will embark on a 25-date tour with guitarist John Collura, bassist Mike Davenport, and drummer Chris Knapp. The tour marks the 10th anniversary of the album that has sold over 693,000 copies (according to Nielsen SoundScan) and produced the band’s greatest hit, a cover of Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer” that peaked at No. 20 in the Hot 100. The Ataris chronicled the reunion in a documentary which Billboard has an exclusive sneak peak at:

“Andy Somers (of the Agency Group), who used to book us, threw this idea at me,” Roe says. “I was a little reluctant because I hadn’t spoken those guys in a long time.”

After the band left Columbia following its breakthrough album, the “classic” Ataris lineup splintered apart. Collura moved back to New York and now runs a studio there. Roe temporarily lost touch with Davenport, who now plays in Versus the World, who will serve as openers on the tour. And Collura continued with Roe onto the Ataris’ 2007 follow-up, the indie rock-oriented “Welcome the Night,” only to depart later that year. But when the 2003 incarnation of the Ataris reunited in October, time washed away any awkwardness, and the reunion gigs were drawn up.

On the upcoming tour, the Ataris will trade in their usual van for an RV and play “So Long Astoria” in its entirety to the biggest venues they’ve graced in years. Inspired by Weezer’s “Pinkerton” tour and a trip to see Taylor Swift with his girlfriend, Roe wanted to give fans a more theatrical experience. He dug up old photos and footage of the “So Long Astoria” years and plans to turn it into a projector presentation to accompany the set.

Ten-year anniversaries are great for nostalgia, and Roe was eager to reminisce on the successful album that produced a pair of songs that made it to “Now That’s What I Call Music!” compilations: “Boys of Summer” and “In This Diary.”

“When ‘Boys of Summer’ happened, it was kind of an accident,” he says. “I recorded that song because my grandmother had passed away and [Henley’s original] reminded me of visiting her in Florida when I was eight years old.” “The Saddest Song,” an ode to Roe’s daughter, was planned as a single, but after KROQ began spinning the Henley cover constantly, it became in inescapable hit. Major League Baseball loved it, and the band wound up playing the 2003 All-Star Game, where Roe remembers starting pitcher David Wells tossing him a baseball. The band’s punk ethos got them to turn down a “TRL” performance, but they did license an old, 30-second song called “The Radio Still Sucks” to the very first iTunes commercial.

“Steve Jobs contacted us through our old independent label Kung Fu Records,” Roe remembers. “At the time, I wasn’t aware of him; iTunes was just launching. He was like, ‘We want to use your song in a commercial.’ I was like, ‘Sure, yeah, but you realize there are four f-words in the song?'”

But that’s not all coming down the pike from the Ataris. The band is in the process of securing rights for a vinyl reissue of “So Long Astoria” from Columbia, and plans to re-release it along with the rest of its back catalog on its original home, Kung Fu Records. The gatefold albums will be available in a boxset and individually, with additional b-sides and photography from Roe.

The Ataris hope to use proceeds from the tour to help finance their long-delayed album “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” which Roe is in the process of recording with the pre-reunion Ataris (the 2003 incarnation is limited to the upcoming tour). There’s no official release date, though Roe says, “maybe if we’re lucky we’ll get it out by the end of the year.”

The Ataris are an American alternative rock band from Anderson, Indiana, that formed in 1995. They have released five studio albums to date, their most successful being “So Long, Astoria” which was certified Gold.

The four piece came together in 1995 when, using a 4-track tape recorder, singer-songwriter and guitarist Kristopher Roe, and guitarist Jasin Thomason, would write and record demos with a drum machine whilst searching for a full-time drummer.

The band’s big break came in 1996 when Roe and Thomason attended a show to see the band The Vandals, who owned their own label “Kung Fu Records. Thomason gave a tape to Joe Escalante, a bassist from the band. The Ataris were later signed to the record label and eventually found drummer Derrick Plourde. Fast-forward a couple of months to April 29th 1997, when The Ataris released their debut album “Anywhere but Here” which only took a week to record. The band relocated to Santa Barbara, California. The band had to undergo some line up changes in this transition period, but their popularity started to bloom.

In 2002 saw the Ataris new album “So Long, Astoria” start to take shape. Their contract with Kung Fu Records had expired but they had the attention of Columbia Records to decided to sign with them. This album catered to a much more mainstream audience and generated successful singles such as “In This Diary” and “The Saddest Song”. The album also featured their cover of Don Henley’s “the Boys of Summer” which became their “accidental” second single after a radio station, KROQ in Los Angeles started playing it. However, it is the band’s highest charting single to date, reaching No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album sold over 700,000 units in total and was certified Gold.

The band has remained a band to this day but it is very much the brainchild of Roe, with him being the driving force behind the band and the original member. In 2013, The Ataris began a North American tour with Kris Roe and the former members John Collura, Mike Davenport and Chris Knapp to celebrate the 10 years of their most successful album, “So Long, Astoria”.

Live reviews

The Ataris play with a minimalistic set up, but the sound they create is intense and forceful. The band’s do-it-yourself approach to making music and touring has instilled an authenticity into the personality of the band that has garnered them a strong cult following.

The Ataris always give their all when performing live. Their guitarist and singer, Kristopher Roe, vigorously strums his guitar and sings in a raw voice with deep passion. The band plays in a fast pop-punk kind of way, spitting out catchy, loud, distorted songs at rapid speeds. The band has also been known to elaborate on some of their songs’ ending by going into experimental droning with heavy reverb and strong crashing of the cymbals. The band plays with the kind of emotion that conveys a strong sense of teenage angst, which deeply connects with the audience as they belt out the lyrics at the top of their lungs.

The band usually plays at small venues allowing the audience to experience a more intimate performance by getting up close and personal to the band. The band seems to gain much inspiration and feed from their audience’s deep connection to their songs. The Ataris usually plays with minimal stage theatrics and often leaves the lights up so the fans can clearly see them allowing the band to connect better to the audience when performing their highly athematic songs.

The Ataris’ setlist contains songs from most of their discography that will please audiences. You will most likely find the audience crowd surfing to such songs as “Road Signs and Rock Songs” or you might even hear them perform a cover song by one of their favorite bands, The Replacements.

As a pivotal band in late nineties pop-punk it’s no surprise that The Ataris stir a bit of nostalgia for the fans who have grown up listening to them in their teenage years. With five albums worth of material, you’re bound to hear one of your favourites live. From the offset energy levels are through the roof, as the band hook the crowd with some of their classics like “Take Off and Landings” and “So Long, Astoria” taken from the album with same title, which really catapulted them into the mainstream. Even after all those years of relentlessly touring, The Ataris seem to have not lost the enthusiasm and in fact with age their performances just keep getting better with Kris Roe’s weathered, gravelly vocals mastered to perfection. Their audiences see a good mixture of old and new fans who share the same undying passion, each song is met with rapturous applause. Even in the moments of long instrumental where the band go into their own as they get lost in the rhythm, they take the audience with them as they are both moved and mesmerised. Aptly coming back for an encore with “Looking Back on Today” the fans sing back almost twice as loud, while the band beam from ear to ear. Whether or not you grew up listening to them, after seeing The Ataris they will be one of your favourite live bands.

This show rocked my effing face off! And the Misfits covers were supreme! 15 year old me and 30 year old me are still in love with Kris Roe. x
