Disney Cruise vs. Disney Aulani: Which Vacation is Right For Your Family?

You’ve been to Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Or maybe both! You are looking to take another Disney vacation but maybe with a bit of a twist to change it up this time. Most Disney-loving families turn next to a cruise vacation aboard Disney Cruise Line or a trip to Hawaii to Aulani, Disney’s resort on the island of O’ahu.

Aulani vs. Disney Cruise Comparison

I hear a lot from friends and readers who aren’t sure whether Aulani or a Disney Cruise is the best next step in their Disney travels. I’ve had the good fortune to try both on multiple occasions over the years, experiencing them with my kids at different ages and stages.

Both are travel experiences I’d highly recommend. Although this post pits Aulani vs. Disney Cruise, there really isn’t a winner and loser here. Rather, one trip may simply be better suited to the ages of your kids or the way your family likes to travel. What I hope to do is point out those sweet spots where you are likely to get more out of doing one of these trips compared to the other.

But if budget allows and you have the interest, I sincerely hope Disney-loving families eventually do both!

Similarities Between Disney Cruise Line & Aulani

View of Disney's Aulani Resort from Ko Olina beach.

Before I dive into the differences between these two vacations, let’s start with the similarities. Disney Aulani (which opened in Ko Olina on O’ahu in 2011) was very much modeled after Disney Cruise Line (which launched in 1998). In fact, Aulani was designed to bring much of the Disney Cruise experience to land. So it’s not surprising that the two have a lot more in common than they have different.

Both are luxury-level (translation: expensive) Disney vacations. If you are used to doing Disney on the cheap by staying in a value resort or an inexpensive off-property hotel at Disney World or Disneyland, you probably aren’t going to be able to do that with either Aulani or Disney Cruise.

To be sure, there are certainly ways to reduce the costs of both Aulani and DCL. But be realistic about the total bill you are going to be facing with either of these vacations.

Both Disney Cruise Line and Aulani offer a vacation experience that is very different from the Disney parks. A trip to Disney World or Disneyland means a lot of walking and logistics navigating theme park lines day after day. You’ll find a totally different daily schedule on an Aulani or DCL vacation.

The footprint and scope of both Aulani and the Disney Cruise ships are smaller. There are no attractions to ride. You can plan much less if you prefer. If you want to spend a day lounging by a pool or visiting a spa, there’s time for that. In fact, that’s really the point of these vacations.

Of course, there’s amazing Disney service and lots of Disney entertainment and characters to experience if you wish. But there’s far less theme park rat race. (Although I can’t promise you won’t encounter crowds and lines in several situations!)

Disney Cruise Line vs. Disney Aulani: Key Differences to Consider

So now on to the differences that matter between these two kinds of vacations. What factors should you consider in picking which one is right for you?

Where Are You Located?

Disney Cruise vs. Disney Aulani - Disney Cruise in port

Location, location, location. For families with limited vacation times and sometimes limited patience with little ones on planes, minimizing travel time is often an important factor in making vacation decisions.

For fellow West Coast families, the logistics of getting to Hawaii can be quite simple. And they are even simpler and cheaper now that Southwest Airlines has been flying to Hawaii the last several years. I’m a California girl and can travel to Hawaii on an easy 5 hour flight. As a result, Aulani feels “close” to me.

For families in the Midwest or on the East Coast, however, visiting Aulani is more of a challenge. A Hawaii trip can require multiple plane connections, maybe a redeye flight, and some serious jet lag and time zone changes. That may not be how you want to spend vacation – especially with babies or toddlers. I get it.

The majority of Americans will be much closer to a Disney Cruise Line vacation than an Aulani one. In that case, Disney Cruise may be a smarter choice. DCL currently has five ships (the Disney Magic, the Disney Wonder, the Disney Dream, the Disney Fantasy, and the new Disney Wish). There are two more on the way (the Disney Treasure and a yet-to-be-named ship that will be Asia-based). Chances are one is stationed closer to you. Itineraries currently include the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, the West Coast of Mexico (Mexican Riviera), Australia, and several more.

Within just North America, cruises set sail out of Florida (Port Canaveral near Orlando, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale), Galveston, New Orleans, San Diego, Vancouver, and New York City. Indeed, even as close as Aulani is for me, DCL’s San Diego sailings are much closer!

How Flexible Is Your Travel Schedule?

Even though DCL sailings are closer geographically, there is one countervailing factor to consider. Cruise itineraries start and end only on specific days. As a result, it may be harder to find a DCL sailing that fits your ideal schedule constraints. This is especially true given the fact that most travelers fly in a day before a cruise starts to minimize the risk of a flight delay making them miss the ship.

We are encountering just this very challenge as we plan for our Thanksgiving travels. One of my kids doesn’t have the full week off of school this year. We found there simply isn’t a Disney cruise that we could travel to and sail on in the time allotted without having her miss at least one day of school.

Related: Tips for Missing School to Travel

In contrast, Aulani offers the ultimate in flexibility. Guests can arrive and depart on any day of the year at any time. This has meant we’ve been able to squeeze in a visit to Aulani even on a long weekend where a nearby cruise simply wouldn’t have aligned with the kids’ school holidays. So for travelers who need flexibility, Aulani may ultimately be the more flexible of the two.

Do You Want a More All-Inclusive Experience?

Disney Cruise vs. Disney Aulani - Makahiki Character breakfast

Many families prefer to take all-inclusive vacations. They can take a lot of the guess work out of budgeting. Others much prefer to pay a la carte for what they actually consume and value. (For what it’s worth, I’m pretty ambivalent personally about this choice. I usually find myself on a la carte vacations most of the time.)

If you are the type of traveler who values the all-inclusive model, Disney Cruise Line is much closer to an all-inclusive vacation than Aulani. Food and a number of on-board activities and entertainment options are included in the cost of a cruise. There are extras like many drinks, shore excursions, and tips to watch out for, but they are fewer and farther between.

Aulani, on the other hand, is much more like a standard resort vacation. You pay for the room, but all of the food and drinks are an additional expense. Aulani has number of free activities like the amazing pools, waterslides, lazy river, and beach (and kids club – more on that below). But most of the premium experiences cost extra, including an evening show, Aulani’s Ka Wa’a Luau . And as you might imagine, everything else is simply more expensive in Hawaii.

Does Anyone in Your Family Get Motion Sickness?

Disney Cruise vs. Disney Aulani - Disney Wonder

This may seem like a small consideration but it matters in a big way. There is a small portion of the population for whom cruising is just not a realistic vacation choice thanks to motion sickness or related health issues.

I have a friend who took her 8 year old on a Disney Cruise for the first time only to discover that his stomach was radically incompatible with cruising. He was terribly seasick on the ship for four days straight. In fact, they headed straight to the ER to rehydrate him after docking. He didn’t have any history of other types of motion sickness so this reaction was quite an unfortunate surprise.

It’s impossible to know for sure whether any of your family members will be affected by cruises until you take one. The vast majority of people who don’t already have known motion sickness or related problems will be fine on any cruise, especially with a little Dramamine or SeaBands for backup. I personally have vertigo and have no problems even on small ships in big waves, although my father with Meniere’s disease can no longer cruise. But if this worries you and you have not cruised before, I’d steer clear of a long open water DCL itinerary as your first trip. It’s not much of a vacation for anyone if even one member of the family feels poorly.

If you have someone with known motion sickness issues of any significance, a cruise may be a gamble you just don’t want to take.

Do You Have a Big Family or Need more Space?

Disney Cruise Line vs. Disney Aulani - Disney Wonder Cabin

If you have more than two kids, you are probably already used to the challenge of standard hotel rooms. Most of them are built for four – if that. Upgrading to larger accommodations or even booking two rooms brings major increased costs.

Big families will likely find that both Aulani and Disney Cruise Line present the usual challenges. As you can probably imagine, however, space is a little easier to come by on land than on sea. Larger suites and condos are ultimately a bit more readily available at Aulani.

Aulani has some more flexible options for larger families because of its abundance of Disney Vacation Club (DVC) villas ( Related : Find out how we rented at Aulani using DVC points and saved big  or rent from David’s Vacation Club Rentals yourself). One bedroom villas sleep up to 5 people. Families of 6 or more will need to upgrade to the two or three bedroom villas. To be sure, these premium rooms do not come cheap. But the villas have full kitchens and washer/dryers that make them very convenient and even cost-effective for larger families.

Disney Cruise vs. Disney Aulani - Aulani 1 bedroom DVC villa

Disney Cruise Line does have some options that work for bigger families as well. DCL ships have a number of cabins that sleep 5. They are more limited in supply and may sell out before the rest of the cabins do, so early planning is required. And they are a tight squeeze even when you can find them.

Many larger families often opt to book two connecting cabins on Disney Cruise Line for more space. This limits the cabin types available to you depending on the ship, but can work well. And on cheaper itineraries like those in the Caribbean, this strategy often isn’t prohibitively expensive, although it can be to some destinations.

Do You Want or Need Childcare?

Disney Cruise Line with Toddlers and Preschoolers - Oceaneer Club

Both Disney Cruise ships and Disney’s Aulani Resort have complimentary kids clubs. (Truthfully, the clubs are built into the cost of the room/cabin. But I prefer to celebrate them as free.) While some of the DCL and Aulani childcare offerings used to be similar, that is not really the case anymore. It’s important to get up to speed on what the parameters are in 2023 to determine what will work best for your childcare needs.

Disney Cruise Line offers two connecting kids clubs, the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab, included in the cruise cost. Kids ages 3-12 are permitted to visit as long as they are potty trained. No reservations are required, and I’ve never yet seen a club reach capacity. The clubs are open for long hours that give parents a lot of flexibility any time of the day.

All the DCL ships also have a nursery aboard in addition to the kids clubs. The nursery takes kids from 6 months old through age 3 (note that 3 year olds can do either the Oceaneer Club & Lab or the nursery). At $9 per hour, this childcare option isn’t free, but it’s a good value for what it offers.

it's a small world Nursery Disney Cruise

Aulani has never had a nursery for babies and toddlers like Disney Cruise Line, but it does have a kids club called Aunty’s Beach House . Aunty’s used to operate much more like Disney Cruise Line’s clubs. Parents could drop kids off on a whim for any length of time. Unfortunately, it no longer works this way in 2023.

Aunty’s currently admits kids ages 4-12 only (it used to take 3 years olds too). Reservations are essential and book up weeks in advance online. Kids are limited to one free 90 minute pre-set session per day, at either 8am, 10am, or noon. Aunty’s also is not open in the evenings, so it’s not an option for parents who want to use it for an adults-only date night.

Auntys Beach House Aulani Entrance

My kids adored Aunty’s in the pre-2020 times. You can probably sense my frustration at the current pared back state of affairs. If you need or want meaningful included childcare, Aulani’s offering doesn’t make the grade at the moment. If you simply want a break from the kids here and there and can plan ahead, it will suit just fine.

The bottom line? If you have a baby or toddler who is younger than 4, there is no Disney-operated childcare option for you at Aulani. And for kids 4-12, the options are more limited at Aulani than on Disney Cruise Line. If you are like my family and often use kids clubs, this difference between Aulani and DCL can be a crucial tie-breaker.

Trips With Tykes Tip : Need a sitter for younger kids or a date night at Aulani? There’s an outside service we recommend with background checked nannies that serves the resort. Find out more about Nanny-Land’s services here and be sure to use Crown Code: TWT for $80 in savings off the registration fee.

Do You Have Teens?

Vibe teen club on Disney Cruise Line

When I first published this post, my kids were still in elementary school, so I had no experience yet with the teenage point of view on Aulani and DCL. But I just recently took a Disney cruise with my daughter for her 14th birthday and we visited Aulani a few months before that. So I grilled her hard on what she thought about both experiences for teens.

Both offer a safe atmosphere where parents can let teens roam and explore independently. While Aulani will always be her first love, she thought Disney Cruise Line currently delivers far more for the teen set.

Disney Cruises simply have so much more for teens to do. They have an abundance of night time programming and exclusive tween/teen clubs, Edge and Vibe. At Aulani, there used to be some programming for teens before 2020, but it hasn’t returned to the schedule. In my experience, Aulani appears to be drawing more families with little ones in recent years than it did before, so there may not be the demand for it ever to return. On our last trip to Aulani, we had a lot of family bonding and fun together, but my daughter grew a little restless not having an organized way to meet kids her age.

That said, Aulani would still work well for teens on a vacation with extended family and friends and built-in socialization. But DCL is better when traveling with just your immediate family because it is easier for teens to make and meet friends on board.

The verdict? If you have an active teen who likes to socialize, the safer bet is DCL. Further reading from fellow travel bloggers who have done both vacations with teens too:

Do You Have a Passport?

Disney Cruise vs. Aulani - Castaway Cay

As someone who has been lucky to travel internationally since I was a child, I sometimes forget that most Americans don’t have passports! At $130 per adult and $100 per child in 2023 (+ a $35 acceptance fees for new applicants), they are a big cost that can really add to a trip’s budget.

You obviously don’t need passports at all for an Aulani vacation (for the geographically challenged – yes, Hawaii is a US state). But passports are needed or at least highly advised for most Disney Cruise Line itineraries.

Technically, there are a few exceptions. You and/or your kids may be able to make do with a passport card (only $65) or ID and birth certificate if you are taking a closed loop cruise to many Caribbean countries, Canada or Mexico.

But I don’t recommend this approach at all. If your ship is diverted to a new port due to weather, you might not be able to get off. It’s also risky to travel internationally without a standard passport in the case of a medical or family emergency.

So, if you and your kids are not yet passport holders, definitely factor the cost of a passport into your Disney Cruise Line vacations as you make your travel decisions!

Do You Want to Do More than Disney?

Disney Cruise Line vs. Disney Aulani - Aulani from Ocean

One of the reasons many vacationers choose an Aulani or Disney Cruise Line vacation is that they offer so much more than Disney travel. They come with tried and true Disney service and amenities that families can trust to meet their travel needs. But they aren’t merely a theme park vacation. They are both much more focused on the destination.

It is certainly possible to do either of these vacations and stay entirely within the Disney bubble if you wish. You can go straight from Honolulu Airport to Aulani and never leave until it is time to go back to the airport. If you choose a DCL itinerary that doesn’t have many or any ports of call other than Castaway Cay (or if you don’t get off the ship!), you’ll have a mostly Disney-centric experience as well.

But it’s also possible to explore a lot more on either of these vacations. Aulani is a short skip and a hop away from Pearl Harbor. You can spend a day driving to the North Shore or visiting Waikiki Beach or hiking Diamond Head. You can even combine a few nights of an Aulani vacation with a stay elsewhere in the Hawaiian islands to both save money and see more sights.

And even if you do stay only within the resort, you’ll still learn plenty about the local culture. Disney has worked diligently to make Aulani authentically Hawaiian in its offerings. It’s more than just character meals and pixie dust.

With Disney Cruise Line you can quite literally see the world. Opt for a tropical vacation with a Caribbean or Mexican Riviera itinerary. Or you can explore culture and history in Europe or experience outdoor adventure in Alaska. The numerous options make a DCL trip even more of a destination-focused vacation that just happens to have magical Disney touches.

Frequently Asked Questions about Disney Cruises and Aulani

Aulani Makahiki Character Breakfast with Mickey Mouse

Still have questions about the Disney Cruise vs. Aulani debate? Here are a few more queries that may have crossed your mind.

Can I take a Disney Cruise TO Aulani?

If you want to have your cake and eat it too by taking a Disney Cruise that includes an Aulani vacation, is that possible? Not exactly.

As of 2023, Disney has added Hawaii to its cruising schedule, but only in a very limited fashion. One ship, the Disney Wonder, stops in Hawaii as it repositions from its summer Alaska itineraries down to Australia in the fall (and then as it returns to the West Coast in spring 2024).

The ship doesn’t stop at Aulani (and in fact, only the fall itinerary includes Honolulu). And these one way trips are 10 days each and quite pricey.

Conceivably, you could DIY an itinerary to do both DCL and Aulani, as follows:

  • Depart on the Disney Wonder on October 3, 2023 from Vancouver to Hawaii.
  • Debark the Disney Wonder on October 13, 2023 in Honolulu.
  • Transfer to Aulani for a stay of several nights.

But realistically, this isn’t going to work for the vast majority of family travelers. Sorry to disappoint!

What costs more: a Disney cruise or an Aulani vacation?

As you can probably imagine, there is no definitive answer to this question. A lot depends on the date you would like to travel. And for cruises, the price can vary based on the destinations involved and the ship.

To help illustrate general costs, I priced out sample 4 night vacations for a family of four on the same dates. Since Aulani doesn’t include food like DCL, I budgeted $250 for a family per day. Believe it or not, this is a reasonable Hawaii food budget if you plan to eat out most dinners but also plan to get some groceries or grab and go food at other times.

For a trip right after Labor Day this year (September 4-8, 2023), here is what the least expensive room/cabin runs for each:

  • Disney Magic 4-Night Bahamian Cruise from Miami (inside cabin): $3452
  • Aulani $2242 (standard room with current 25% off fall discount) + $250/day food budget = $3242

Here’s another example for early next year (January 8-12, 2024) that includes higher end accommodations (a veranda cabin on Disney’s newest ship vs. a one bedroom villa at Aulani):

  • Disney Wish 4-Night Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral (veranda cabin): $5063
  • Aulani $4100 (1 bedroom villa) + $250/day food budget = $5100

As you can see, the prices for Aulani and Disney Cruises are generally in the same ballpark. There are, however, some exceptions to this rule. For example, Disney Cruises to Alaska tend to be quite a bit more expensive than other cruise destinations. Disney Aulani also tends to run more published seasonal sales where you can sometimes snag a lower nightly room price if you are very flexible.

At Aulani, you can also book a shorter stay to save money. A lot of travelers on a budget who still want to experience Aulani may want to book a one or two night stay and spend additional nights at a more moderately priced hotel elsewhere on O’ahu. Disney Cruises in North America, in contrast, are a minimum of a three night price commitment.

And of course, you also have to consider airfare costs and other add-ons your family might want to experience when making the full cost comparison.

Aulani vs. Disney Cruise: The Final Word

Disney Wonder DCL ship in Ensenada Mexico

Whatever you decide between Aulani or Disney Cruise Line, I’m fairly confident you will experience a memorable family vacation.

We have enjoyed our times immensely at each and plan to return to both. Aulani was probably a better fit for kids when they were preschoolers/grade school age and Disney Cruise is working a bit better now as our kids get into the teen years. But that could change as both DCL and Aulani make adjustments to their offerings.

Let me know which one your family is choosing (or has chosen) first and why!

I’m booked on the ten night Hawaii cruise in 2020. This will be my 8th Disney Cruise. Since this will be my first time to Hawaii and my husband and I are in our 60’s we felt this might be a good time to do the cruise and perhaps come back to visit Hawaii years after. It was a great article, thank you.

I would love to return to both, but prefer the variety of food and activity options on DCL, so will probably return to do that first.

3 Ways that Aulani is Similar to Disney Cruise Line

UPDATE 3/4/21: Disney has announced that the KA WA’A Luau will be making its return beginning March 27, 2021! Read more details about the luau HERE .

While we’re all waiting and dreaming of being able to board a Disney ship and sail again, let’s take a quick look at some elements of visiting Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa , and compare its similarities to a Disney Cruise Line vacation. If you’ve watched any of our shows where we’ve discussed a Hawaiian vacation at Aulani , you’ve likely heard Pete Werner say that it is essentially DCL on land.

aulani vs disney cruise

While we’re at it, a quick reminder that some of you may remember hearing about; Hawaiian Air’s nonstop service from MCO (Orlando International Airport) to HNL (Honolulu) begins in mid-March , making now a great time to add Aulani to your Walt Disney World trip. We should point out that this flight is 10 hours and 50 minutes long, but it sure beats stopping in Los Angeles for a multiple-hour layover. The pricing on this direct flight varies quite a bit depending on the dates and days of your flight(s) but ranges from around $624 to $878 for the main cabin seats (these rates vary and could change at any given moment).

aulani vs disney cruise

If you’re the type of person who likes to see a daily list of what’s going on, you’ll be glad to know that similar to the Personal Navigator that is delivered to your stateroom each day, Aulani has the Daily ‘Iwa available for pickup at the front desk anytime after 7:30 p.m.

You can also download the new Aulani app on your mobile device with everything from daily activities to character experiences and everything in between. You can also find the operating hours, menus, and pricing for the Resort restaurants , too.

aulani vs disney cruise

Like being aboard one of the Disney Cruise ships , many activities are going on right at Aulani, even now during the pandemic. You can not only meet Disney Characters – in a socially distanced environment – but you can participate in other activities as well, such as making your own Mickey Ears. You can also swim in one of the many pools on the property or enjoy a ride ( or many rides, ahem ) in the lazy river. Spending time on the beach is an incredible and relaxing way to spend your day, too, and it’s just a few steps away from your room. You can enjoy boogie-boarding or even rent snorkels, paddleboards, and other equipment there.

aulani vs disney cruise

If excursions are more your style, there are plenty of those available too. Tours to Diamond Head, Kualoa Ranch, or the Dole Plantation are just a few of the options. You can also rent a car and head out to Waikiki Beach or the Aquarium. Having a rental car gives you the freedom to enjoy some of the local restaurants and explore the rest of the island or to stop by a grocery store if you’d like to do your own cooking. Be aware that there is a nightly parking fee at Aulani if you are not a Disney Vacation Club member.

Disney Magic

Lastly, the fact that you can enjoy a most beautiful sunset from just about anywhere at Aulani is at the top of the list for me. One of my very favorite parts of cruising is the ability to see the sunset from just about anywhere on the ship. You know, the line where the sky meets the sea and all that – add the setting sun to it, and it is sheer perfection in my book.

One of the questions that we get asked a lot is if you have to be a Disney Vacation Member to stay at Aulani, and the answer is no. 13 Aulani Tips: A Guide to Disney’s Aulani Resort

affiliate disclosure

IF A TRIP TO DISNEY’S AULANI RESORT IS IN YOUR FUTURE, USE MY GUIDE TO HELP YOU MAXIMIZE YOUR STAY IN PARADISE!

Are you planning a trip to the magical paradise of Aulani , a Disney Resort & Spa? Nestled on the stunning shores of Ko Olina, Oahu, Aulani promises an enchanting experience. It is the perfect combination of the captivating charm of Disney with the breathtaking beauty of Hawaii. To ensure you make the most of your trip, I’ve curated a collection of invaluable Aulani tips and tricks.

I will guide you through several categories of tips for planning your stay including:

  • Tips for Aulani Resort
  • Tips for Other Things to Do on Oahu
  • Tips for What to Pack for Your Trip

Let’s dive in!

13 Aulani Tips for Your Disney Vacation

To help you make the most of your Aulani vacation, I have compiled 13 Aulani Tips . By utilizing these tips, you will be sure to have the most magical Hawaiian Disney vacation!

1. Book a Lei Greeting

Book a lei service when you arrive in Hawaii

Before your arrival in Hawaii, book a Lei greeting! There is no better way to start your Aulani vacation than to be greeted with a warm Hawaiian welcome. These welcomes come in the form of a beautiful lei.

A lei is a traditional Hawaiian garland made of flowers or other materials and is given as a symbol of affection, greeting, or celebration . Take a moment to embrace the aloha spirit and wear your lei proudly throughout your stay. It will truly help you immerse yourself in the island’s welcoming atmosphere.

TIP: I recommend finding a company that will greet you right at the airport!

2. Know What Things Are Complimentary and What Are Extra

Knowing what is included in your vacation package is a great Aulani tip.

My next Aulani tip is to know what’s included in your vacation stay. Aulani is not considered an all-inclusive resort . However, there are many things that are included with the cost of your stay. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with what things are included in your vacation package and what things you can add at an extra cost.

As a part of your Aulani vacation, you have access to Disney’s world-renowned service , character experiences, 5 pool areas, a private beach , and more than 30 complimentary activities.

Book Your Trip

3. Check the Daily ‘Iwa

Checking the daily 'iwa is a great Aulani tip.

It’s essential to stay informed about the daily activities, events, and offerings. Aulani provides a daily newsletter called the ‘Iwa, which contains valuable information about the resort’s schedule, dining options, entertainment, and special promotions. Furthermore, checking the ‘Iwa each day will ensure you don’t miss out on any exciting experiences or updates.

TIP: You can also download the Aulani app ! With the app you can use a navigational map of the resort, check the daily ‘iwa, and search for daily activities!

4. Meet the Characters

Meeting Characters is a great Aulani experience!

Another Aulani tip on my list is to meet the characters at the resort. One of the most enchanting aspects of a visit to Aulani is the opportunity to meet beloved Disney characters in a unique and tropical setting . Interacting with your favorite characters can be a truly magical experience for guests of all ages.

Aulani offers various character greeting opportunities throughout the resort. Check the daily ‘Iwa or inquire at the front desk to find out the schedule and locations where you can meet and take photos with Disney characters. In addition, be prepared to bring your autograph book and camera to capture those memorable moments.

TIP: A perfect way to interact with your favorite characters and enjoy a fabulous 3-course breakfast is to snag a reservation at the Makahiki Restaurant. They host a daily character breakfast which is a great way to start the day!

5. Attend a Luau

Experience an authentic Hawaiian luau while on your Aulani vacation.

No visit to Aulani is complete without experiencing the vibrant and entertaining luau. The resort offers a traditional Hawaiian luau experience where you can indulge in a delicious feast while being captivated by live music, hula dancing, and a mesmerizing fire-knife performance.

Immerse yourself in the rich culture and traditions of Hawaii as you savor the flavors of the islands and enjoy a truly unforgettable evening of entertainment. Make sure to reserve your spot in advance, as this popular event tends to fill up quickly. Attending the luau is a fantastic way to embrace the spirit of Hawaii and create lasting memories during your stay at Aulani.

6. Get to the Pools Early

Getting a spot at the pool early is a great Aulani tip.

With its stunning pools and exhilarating water slides, Aulani is a paradise for water enthusiasts. My next tip is to make the most of your time at the pool by arriving early. Getting to the pool area before the crowds can provide you with the opportunity to secure preferred spots, such as lounge chairs or shaded areas, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Arriving early also allows you to maximize your time on the water slides and indulge in various water activities without long wait times. So, grab your swimsuits, sunscreen, and towels, and be one of the first to dive into the refreshing oasis of Waikolohe Valley. Getting to the pool early ensures that you have ample time to splash, slide, and relax in the water wonderland of Aulani.

Why not top off your Disney Hawaiian vacation with a couple of days at Disneyland?! Check out the two California theme parks that make up Disneyland before your next trip!

7. Float on the Lazy River

Enjoy an afternoon on Aulani's lazy river.

The next great Aulani tip is to take the time to enjoy Waikolohe Stream. Waikolohe Stream is a serene and relaxing experience where you can leisurely float along the gentle currents , taking in the beautiful surroundings and soaking up the Hawaiian sun.

You’ll have the opportunity to fully appreciate the serenity of the lazy river before it gets busier later in the day. So, grab a tube, sit back, and let the gentle flow of the lazy river carry you away into a state of relaxation .

8. Check Out Aunty’s Beach House

Booking Aunty's Beach House in advance is a key Aulani Tip

The photographers will guide you through the process, ensuring you feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. Remember to schedule your session in advance to secure your preferred date and time.

TIP: If you don’t want to spend the extra cash on a private photo session, make sure to grab a PhotoPass card from one of the many PhotoPass photographers at the resort. Anytime you see one of these photographers on the property let them snap your pictures. You can then purchase in a bundle or by the print!

12. Pamper Yourself With a Spa Day

Enjoy a day at the spa while on your Aulani vacation.

13. Discover the Rest of the Island

Aloha from the island of Oahu and Disney's Aulani Resort

While Aulani offers a paradise within itself, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the rest of the captivating island of Oahu. Venture beyond the resort’s boundaries to discover the rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and diverse attractions that await you.

Rent a car or join organized tours to visit iconic landmarks like Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head State Monument, or the historic town of Haleiwa. Immerse yourself in the local culture by exploring local markets, trying traditional Hawaiian dishes, or attending cultural events.

Oahu boasts stunning beaches, lush hiking trails, and scenic viewpoints, so be sure to experience the natural beauty that surrounds you. Whether it’s catching a famous North Shore wave, snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, or enjoying a scenic drive along the east coast, Oahu offers a plethora of unforgettable experiences. Take the time to plan day trips or extend your stay to truly immerse yourself in all that this beautiful island has to offer.

Aulani Tips: Find Other Things to Do on Oahu

While in Oahu make sure to make a stop at Pearl Harbor.

This may be one of my more unexpected Aulani tips. But while Aulani provides an idyllic setting, exploring the rest of Oahu allows you to delve deeper into the island’s history, landscapes, and local communities. So, grab a map, embrace the spirit of adventure, and embark on a journey of discovery beyond the confines of the resort .

Here is a look at some of my other Oahu favorites that you should definitely consider during your visit!

Visit Pearl Harbor

Visiting Pearl Harbor is a poignant and educational experience that offers a profound understanding of World War II and its impact. While at Pearl Harbor, you can also tour the USS Missouri Battleship, known as the “Mighty Mo,” and step aboard this iconic vessel where the Japanese surrender was signed, marking the end of the war. Plan your visit in advance and allocate enough time to fully immerse yourself in the history and significance of this historic site.

>>>Visit the USS Arizona Memorial and Tour the USS Missouri Battleship Here!<<<

Surf on the North Shore

For those seeking an adrenaline-pumping adventure, a trip to Oahu’s North Shore is a must. Renowned for its world-class surf breaks , this stretch of coastline is a surfing paradise. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, the North Shore offers waves for every skill level. Visit iconic surf spots like Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay, where you can witness the incredible power and beauty of the ocean firsthand .

TIP: If you’re new to surfing, consider taking a lesson from one of the local surf schools. They cater to all experience levels. Find my recommendation HERE!

Tour the Dole Plantation

No visit to Oahu would be complete without a trip to the famous Dole Plantation. Located in the heart of the island, the Dole Plantation offers a delightful and immersive experience for pineapple enthusiasts of all ages.

Take a tour of the plantation and learn about the history of pineapple cultivation in Hawaii , from its humble beginnings to becoming a worldwide symbol of the island. Discover the various stages of pineapple growth and cultivation, and gain insight into the plantation’s farming practices.

Don’t miss the chance to ride the Pineapple Express . This narrated train journey takes you through the plantation’s scenic fields, providing fascinating facts and trivia along the way. You can also immerse yourself in the lush Pineapple Garden Maze . It’s the world’s largest maze of its kind. See if you can navigate your way through its twists and turns.

Book Your Dole Plantation Excursion Here! >>>Dole Plantation Tickets<<<

TIP: After your tour, have fresh pineapples shipped home. That way you will have a sweet treat waiting for you when you return from your trip!

Breakfast at Duke’s

The best breakfast on the island! Named after legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku, this iconic beachfront restaurant offers a fantastic dining experience with breathtaking ocean views.

Begin your day by indulging in a hearty breakfast at Duke’s. You will savor a delectable array of Hawaiian-inspired dishes. From fluffy pancakes topped with fresh tropical fruit to savory omelets filled with local ingredients, the breakfast menu at Duke’s is sure to satisfy every palate.

Hike Diamond Head Crater

For outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers, hiking Diamond Head Crater is an absolute must-do activity during your time on Oahu. Located just a short drive from Aulani , Diamond Head is an iconic volcanic crater that offers breathtaking views and a memorable hiking experience. Lace up your hiking shoes, grab some water, and embark on the trail. You’ll find yourself heading to the summit of Diamond Head.

The moderate hike takes you through a series of switchbacks, tunnels, and stairs. It provides a glimpse into the geological history of the island. As you ascend to the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of Waikiki Beach, the Pacific Ocean, and the surrounding landscapes.

Aulani Tips: What to Pack For Your Aulani Trip

The stunning lobby of Aulani Resort

Packing for your Aulani trip requires a careful balance of essentials for a tropical getaway. Here’s a list of items to consider including in your suitcase:

Beachwear: Don’t forget to pack your swimsuits, cover-ups, and flip-flops. You’ll spend plenty of time by the pool or at the beach. Make sure you have enough options for your entire stay.

Sun Protection: The Hawaiian sun can be strong, so pack sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to shield yourself from the sun’s rays. Consider bringing rash guards or UV-protective clothing for extra protection.

Comfortable Clothing: Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing such as shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and skirts. Pack a light sweater or cardigan for cooler evenings. You will also want a pair of comfortable walking shoes for exploring the resort and nearby attractions.

Camera and Electronics: Capture the magical moments of your Aulani vacation by bringing a camera or smartphone with a good camera. Don’t forget to pack the necessary chargers and adapters for your electronic devices.

Medications and First Aid: If you take any prescription medications, ensure you have an adequate supply for the duration of your trip. Additionally, consider packing a small first-aid kit with essentials like band-aids and pain relievers.

Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in a tropical climate. Bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day and minimize plastic waste.

Beach Accessories: Pack a beach towel and beach bag. You also may want to pack a dry bag to keep your belongings protected from water and sand. Beach toys for the kids are also a must!

Entertainment and Comfort: Don’t forget to bring books, magazines, or any other forms of entertainment for relaxation. You can enjoy these things by the pool or during downtime. Additionally, a travel pillow, eye mask, and earplugs can enhance your comfort during the journey.

By packing wisely, you’ll ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay at Aulani. You will be fully equipped to make the most of your tropical paradise vacation.

We've taken one Disney Cruise , almost 2 years ago. A 7 night Western Caribbean on the Fantasy. We LOVED it. Our girls, 4 and 5 at the time, LOVED it. It has always been our hope to do one again, but it's not financially plausible for us to do so every year or so. We had hoped to get one in this year, but a last minute out of town wedding it taking the vacation days I had set aside for the cruise. So, I thought maybe 2017... but that's also our 10 year anniversary and we are now kicking around going to Aulani. We have never been to Hawaii. If we go in the off season, the cost is nearly the same. So, obviously the cruise board will be a bit biased, but if you've done both, would you recommend Aulani? I just don't want to go to Aulani and wish we'd done a cruise instead, but also think it may be fun to do something we've never done before.

Aulani is kind of isolated from a lot of the attractions on Oahu. It's great if you just want to go one place and chill for a week. Otherwise I'd recommend splitting a stay between there and maybe Waikiki or another island. To me, it has a lot of similar aspects to a cruise with the kids club and activities available but definitely not as overtly "DISNEY" as the cruise (ie less characters). The big difference between the two for me is that I really enjoy the all inclusive aspect of the cruise. But the bigger rooms at Aulani are also nice!

I live here on Oahu, and I agree with the others. Aulani is good for a couple days, but your money is better spent staying somewhere else if you want to get out and do stuff. Aulani averages about $400 a night, and that's with our Kamaaina rate. You can find decent hotels in Waikiki or on the neighbor islands for about half that. We try to go to Aulani once a year, and typically stay one or two nights, and just hang out at the pools. This past january, we stayed 3 nights because my office gratiously paid for it as my 10 year work anniversary. 3 nights felt like a long stay. We tried all the restaurants, hung out at the various pools, did movies on the lawn, etc, and by our last day, the kids were ready for something else. On the other hand, we did a 14 nt EBPC last year, and while it felt like a long time, we still felt like we missed a lot of things. Our first 7nt was the same as well, and dcl kinda has us hooked...

AZMermaid

We went to Aulani for a week last year. We did one day exploring North Shore/Botanical Garden/Dole Plantation. Other than that, we stayed at the resort. It was hands down the best vacation we have had. It was amazing. My kids were 3 and 4 and LOVED the kids clubs. I will say, if they had been older especially, we should have/could have done one more day off the resort. When we go again, we may stay in Waikiki for 2-3 nights and use that as our base for exploring the island and then move to Aulani and never leave!

That's a tough choice! We've been on 5 DCL cruises and last year we went to Aulani. I would recommend Aulani for something different. We loved the laid-back vibe of the entire area, and the kids' club was great! We stayed 2 nights in Waikiki, and then did a few day trips from Aulani. I have a trip report if you want to see some of the things we did: http://savingforadream.blogspot.com/2015/03/hawaii-trip-report-part-11-last-day-in.html

Hawaii was my favorite place to vacation. I only say "was" because I might like Alaska more at this time. Aulani is situated in an area that is pretty far from most things you'll want to do/see on the island other than Aulani itself. Hawaii is a very expensive vacation. Things like food, rental car, gas and then admission fees to place or tours add up quickly. It's totally worth it, though. I'd take a Hawaii vacation over DCL most of the time. For me, Hawaii is a very busy and somewhat exhausting vacation. I am not one who lounges at the resort. So, when I really need some time to chill out and not have to do anything, DCL works well for me.

Strolling along...

Last year we were lucky enough to get both in with the Hawaiian cruises Disney offered. We spent 5 nights in Aulani prior to the cruise. It was wonderful!! We booked a Pearl Harbor tour through Aulani and that was the only time we left the area. We had booked a car, but changed our minds when we heard about all the traffic to and from Waikiki. We were not ready to leave Aulani after 5 nights I can tell you that, we will definitely go back and do a week sometime in the future. ** they had this offer last year for Sept. and I see it again this year as well: 5 nights with 30% of the rooms, also we were given a free character meal and $50 a day room credit, which was very nice. I love DCL and understand why you are having a hard time deciding, either one you choose, your family will have a great experience. Enjoy!

We've done 5 cruises and just did our 1st stay at Aulani last week, for 7 days. We actually voted on this when we got home. Dh voted to do Aulani again instead of a cruise because he likes to just lay at the beach and HATES doing the pictures I insist on during a cruise. My dd14, dd16 & I voted for the cruise because we love pictures, the availability of (& included) food, the different ports we can go to, vibe, and the Disney feel, which we felt, Aulani lacked.

We have done 5 cruises with DCL and stayed at the Aulani once. It was awesome. We did 3 days in Waikiki and 4 nights at Aulani. I wished we had stayed at Aulani the entire time. As others have mentioned, it is out of the way and you will not see any tourist attractions unless you rent a car and pay the exorbitant parking fees. And the food is very, very $$$ (we either ate off site -- hello Monkeypod and Roy's -- or we ate quick service, which was fine). It was beautiful and relaxing. My son, who isn't great socially, had an amazing time. He was always playing some game in the pool with a bunch of kids. He was at the upper age range for Auntie's (kids club) so he was able to check himself in and out (they always called to let you know that he had arrived or he was leaving). We had an amazing vacation. It you haven't been to Hawaii, go! As Cruisehopeful said, it's a tie between Alaska and Hawaii for best vacation spots. (This year we are returning to Alaska on DCL!)

We have done 3 Disney cruises and Aulani once. I would chose a cruise any day if the costs were close. For all of the reasons listed above AND Aulani wasn't disney enough for me. Other than characters and a couple of disney touches in the room it just wasn't disney. There weren't many mickeys, few disney decorations, and no disney music playing. My favorite things about DCL is disney music always playing in the halls and I feel like it's all disney all the time! Plus if you really want to, you can do a cruise and not spend a dime on board or in port (except mandatory tips)

We've been to Aulani twice and absolutely love it. Twelve DCL cruises under our belt with more booked. We love both vacations. Both are very relaxing for us. Disney customer service is at its best. Aulani is beautifully themed but the theme is Hawaii with subtle Disney touches. Perfect IMO. Incredible attention to detail. The only downside to Hawaii for me is the length of the flights. If you plan to dine out, restaurant meals are expensive. I read often that Aulani is out of the way but completely disagree. It is of course farther to get to downtown Honolulu or Waikiki but I have limited interest in either. It is easier to get to to the North Shore. To get to the East coast, it is a lovely drive without dealing with downtown traffic. Pearl Harbor is in between Honolulu and Aulani. Seems easier to me to drive there from Aulani than downtown. Very different vacations IMO but both are wonderful. Happy planning.

We are heading off on our 8th cruise next month and we have a timeshare in Kawaii that we use every other year. We vacation other places as well but the cruises and Hawaii are my families favorites. My kids are 13 and 10 now. We always do a few days after a week in Kauai on one of the other islands and last time we stayed at the Marriott that shares the beach/lagoon with the Aulani. I did not realize until we arrived that it was right next to the Aulani. If I or my kids had never been to Hawaii before I would consider going to Aulani since they love Disney, but I would not do it now. It is very different from anywhere else we have stayed on the islands and not really our kind of Hawaiian vacation. We prefer to have a quite beach, absolutely love going to the beaches on the North Shore of Oahu, but Aulani is anything but quite. We sneaked into the Aulani to check it out and the amenities looked amazing and they definitely had a lot of thinks for everyone to do on the beach. However, my wife was trying to relax on a lounge chair with a book, a little hard to do when the Disney staff is blaring the bull horn to tell some one their time with the paddle board is up and to come into shore. We are off to Hawaii again this spring break and I asked my kids about staying a few days at Aulani, and they both said no, said they would rather go to Maui or the Big Island then do a few days at Aulani, they said it just fells more Hawaiian at the other places.

OKW Lover

Retired and living 2 miles from The Castle.

Very difficult question to answer. We've done 14 DCL cruises (plus several more on other lines) and 3 Aulani visits (totaling 22 days) and I don't think I'd even compare the two. To me its kind of like asking if you'd rather eat a good steak or go to a Broadway show. Both can be great experiences.

At the heart of the resort, an open-air lobby building — Hale Aloha — draws its design inspiration from a traditional Hawaiian canoe house, visually connecting families to the sea and beyond. Window designs, wall graphics and other details welcome families with tales of adventure, myth, legend and more, while twin streams flow through the building before uniting as a single cascade into the center garden below. Wood, thatch, lava stone and coral are among the materials represented in the resort’s two 15-story guestroom towers, each oriented perpendicular to the ocean to maximize ocean views. Façade murals add to the distinctive look of each tower and portray some of the stories and legends of the islands.

To further incorporate Hawaiian traditions, cultural programming including music, dance, history, and arts and crafts; a story-driven, technology-enabled adventure game; a lu’au and other surprises come together to create a Hawaiian destination that’s uniquely Disney.

The Aulani Resort offers an extensive and elaborate pool and water play area, an 18,000-square-foot spa, a children’s club ( Aunty’s Beach House ) and dining at two full-service restaurants and several convenient quick-service dining options. To learn more about this resort, you can read Kris Borchardt’s November 2016 review of her stay at Aulani .

The pool area, known as the Waikolohe Valley, includes:

  • A large 8,200 sq ft pool (Waikolohe Pool) with a zero entry area, and tunnel body slide
  • A lazy river (Waikolohe Stream) pool that twists through caverns and glides through tropical landscape
  • A themed family pool (Ka Maka Grotto), featuring an infinity edge, a misty grotto with beautiful sunset views and an after-dark experience with glittering lights
  • A kids’ splash zone (Keiki Cove) that’s designed to resemble a tidal pool, with images of tidal pool creatures on the pool floor, rainbow water jets and hidden menehune – the legendary “little people” of the islands
  • Rainbow Reef, a private saltwater snorkeling pool stocked with tropical Hawaiian fish, is located in the resort and is good for beginner snorkeling
  • Wailana Pool, another family pool, is separated from the main pool
  • Four whirlpool spas, two with beautiful sunset views (one is reserved for those 18 and older)
  • Ulu Cafe, a poolside dining venue serving breakfast, lunch and dinner – and featuring an outdoor patio with resort and ocean views
  • A shave ice stand (Papalua Shave Ice), grab’n’go shop and a hot and cold item snack stand (Mama’s Snack Stop)
  • Deck space, chairs, chaises and cabanas surround all of the resort’s water features, and numerous chaises are available at the resort’s sandy cove beach.

Rates vary by season of the year. Generally speaking the rates are lowest when kids are in school, and highest in summer, at Christmas and during other holiday periods.

Parking is an additional $37 per day for either valet or self-parking.

When booking a stay at Aulani, you can enjoy a wide range of activities at no additional cost!

In addition to the beach and the resort’s themed pools, Aulani offers many complimentary experiences:

  • Mo‘olele Fire Pit Storytelling: Guests of all ages gather round a fire pit as “Uncle” brings legends of the island to life.
  • ‘Ohana Disney Movie Nights: Watch family-friendly Disney movies under the stars, as well as enjoy pre-movie games, activities and trivia competitions.
  • Aunty’s Beach House : Kids are invited to explore this special area designed just for them as they engage in Hawaiian activities, games and crafts. There are also premium activities available for a fee. Pre-registration and activity reservations are required for Aunty’s Beach House .
  • Menehune Adventure Trail: On this high-tech scavenger hunt, guests explore Aulani to solve riddles, search for statues and discover surprises.
  • M‘ka‘ika‘i, the Art of Aulani Resort: This guided walking tour showcases the art of Aulani.
  • M‘ka‘ika‘i Nature Tour: On this guided walking tour, learn about the native plants, birds and geology of Aulani.
  • Pau Hana Room – Community Hall: Art, crafts and other activities are available for the whole family.

Aulani Resort offers a variety of excursions including snorkeling, hiking, and visits to Hawaii tourist spots like Pearl Harbor. However, exploring the island on your own is usually much less expensive than Aulani’s standard excursions, as well as more flexible. We highly recommend it, and have some suggested activities and daytrips below .

For self-guided exploration, a rental car is a must. The resort’s location is remote and there is very limited public transportation. The nearest bus stop is 1 mile from Aulani and major attractions are located 30 minutes to 1 hour away by car. Read our information on rental car discounts.

If you prefer to rent a car only for only part of your stay, Alamo has a rental car desk at Aulani (location code is HNLR72).

If you plan to drive around Oahu, be aware that traffic is often very bad, particularly along the south shore/Waikiki/Honolulu. Avoid driving into the Honolulu area on weekdays between 5:00-8:00 am and out of Honolulu between 3:00-6:30 pm.

Daytrips and Activities on Oahu

Go city oahu pass, dvc member discounts outside aulani, standard excursions offered by aulani resort.

Snorkel at Hanauma Bay

For a more authentic alternative to Aulani’s artificial lagoon (Rainbow Reef), drive about 1 hour to Hanauma Bay , which is open Wednesdays through Sundays. Hanauma Bay is a protected marine life conservation area and one of the world’s best places for novice snorkelers. Within the bay’s pristine and clear waters, visitors can swim through a stunning coral reef with more than 450 species of vibrant tropical fish. You can drive down on your own and snorkel all day for $25.00 per adult, and kids 12 and under are FREE. There is also a $3.00 parking lot fee, cash only. You will need snorkel equipment of your own, or you can rent some on the beach for $20 per person. An advance reservation is required to view the mandatory 9-minute safety video. This must be paid for in advance and once the reservation has been made, you cannot change it. (There are a limited number of tickets available for walk-in each day, but they must be purchased and used that day and they sell out quickly.)

Hanauma Bay is very popular, and you’ll do best to get an early reservation. Only 1,400 visitors per day are allowed in, and there is limited space for parking even if you have a reservation. You’ll want to add extra driving time for traffic if you are coming from Aulani (or need to drive through Honolulu), but if you have 2 or more people in your car you can use the HOV carpool lane and bypass the worst of the traffic.

In our opinion, snorkeling at Hanauma Bay was a highlight of our trip. We’ve snorkeled at several coves on the Hawaiian Islands, and Hanauma beats them all, hands down. You’ll see many types of fishes, urchins and varieties of living coral in a short span of time. Much of the bay is fairly shallow, which gives you an “up close and personal” view of all that you see. For more information, read Kris Borchardt’s November 2016 review of Hanauma Bay snorkeling .

Experience Kualoa Ranch

Consider a visit to Kualoa Ranch , located on the opposite coast of Oahu, about 45 minutes’ drive from Aulani. Many movies and popular television shows were filmed at the Kualoa Ranch complex, and the area is a popular tourist destination that offers a wide array of reasonably-priced recreational activities, including catamaran sailing, ATV tours, horseback riding, a “secret island” beach and film set tours. Kualoa Ranch is on land once inhabited by the Kahuna members of Hawaiian society, who served as advisors to Kualoa’s resident royalty. The ranch acreage includes a lush valley, natural streams and mountains with beautiful ocean views, and an 800 year old Hawaiian fishpond.

  • The Go City Oahu Pass includes multiple activities at Kualoa Ranch, plus over 30 other Oahu activities and excursions. If you buy a 3-, 5- or 7-day card, you get a FREE bonus attraction.
  • Kualoa Ranch offers military and kama’aina (local resident) discounts .

Explore the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC)

You can easily spend a full day at the Polynesian Cultural Center , located on the northeast coast of the island, about an hour from Aulani, and open daily except Sundays and Wednesdays. The PCC is focused the cultures of the 1,000+ Pacific islands that make up Polynesia. The park is divided into six different villages representing islands of Polynesia and their customs: Aotearoa (New Zealand) Village, Hawaiian Village, Tahitian Village, Fijian Village, Samoan Village and Tongan Village. Each of the villages allows visitors to experience cultural practices of that particular island. Some of the activities include fire pit cooking, coconut husking, hula lessons, fire-starting, paddling a canoe and fire knife dancing.

General admission includes the villages and the Huki: A Canoe Celebration canoe pageant, Hawaii’s only water-borne show. For an additional fee, one of the best luaus on the island, featuring a buffet and spectacular show (HA – Breath of Life) with over 100 performers, can be added to your admission ticket.

  • The Go City Oahu Pass includes general admission to the Polynesian Cultural Center, plus over 30 other Oahu activities and excursions. If you buy a 3-, 5- or 7-day card, you get a FREE bonus attraction, and one of the choices is the Alii Luau and Dinner show at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Visit Pearl Harbor

The most popular thing to do at Pearl Harbor is to visit the Visitor Center and USS Arizona Memorial . Other options are the Battleship Missouri Memorial , Pacific Aviation Museum and USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park .

The Visitor Center and USS Arizona Memorial are operated by the National Park Service. They are FREE to visit and parking is free, but you must get a ticket for the boat over to the Memorial. Tickets can be reserved in advance online (there is a $1 program reservation fee per ticket); see the USS Arizona Memorial Program website for complete details about ticket reservations. There may be some standby space at less busy times, but reservations are highly recommended. Paying your respects at the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor — the final resting place of many of the 1,177 American sailors who were lost in the Pearl Harbor attack on the ship — is intensely moving for most adults, but can be boring for young children. It may be worth taking children 10 and older, especially those interested in history.

There are fees to enter the Battleship Missouri Memorial, Pacific Aviation Museum and USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park. The Battleship Missouri and the USS Bowfin are interesting for some younger children because they can tour through the massive ships, but children under 4 are not permitted on the Bowfin. Children who are very interested in planes and/or history will enjoy the Pacific Aviation Museum.

Be aware that you cannot carry ANY bags (fanny packs, wrist purses, handbags, diaper bags, backpacks, camera bags, etc.) into the Pearl Harbor sites. You can carry a camera in your hand or around your neck. Put your personal items in your pockets or car trunk before departing for Pearl Harbor (don’t put things in the trunk when you get there, as theft from car trunks is a big problem in Hawaii and thieves could be watching). Alternatively, you can store things for $6 per bag at the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park.

Strollers can be taken into the Visitor Center (except the theater), but all pockets and compartments must be empty. Strollers CANNOT be taken on the boat over to the USS Arizona. You are allowed to leave a stroller outside the theater in the Visitor Center while you take the boat to the Memorial, but no one will be watching it. No strollers can be taken onto the Battleship Missouri or USS Bowfin.

  • If you plan to visit the Battleship Missouri , there are militar y and kama’aina (local resident) rates – ask at the box office and show ID.
  • If you plan to visit the USS Bowfin , there are senior, military and kama’aina (local resident) rates – ask at the box office and show ID.
  • If you plan to visit the Pacific Aviation Museum , there are military and kama’aina (local resident) rates – ask at the box office and show ID.
  • If you plan to visit everything at Pearl Harbor and do other activities on Oahu , the Go City Oahu Pass includes the Battleship Missouri, USS Bowfin and Pacific Aviation Museum, plus over 30 other activities and excursions.

Hawaii is a great place to do this! There is so much to see (amazing fish, rays, eels, turtles), and the water is wonderful and clear on the west side of the island, where Aulani is located. There are also interesting wrecks and caves in the area. Unfortunately the lagoons at Aulani (and throughout Ko Olina) are not good for off-the-beach scuba diving as they are too shallow, but open water dives are amazing. Hawaii Nautical is the local scuba diving company in the Ko Olina area. If you are not already a diver, there is a 3-hour “Scuba Diving for Beginners” excursion from Ko Olina Marina (very close to Aulani) where you can learn to scuba dive.

If you plan to do much self-guided sightseeing on the island, be sure to check out the Go City Oahu Pass , which includes admission to over 34 attractions, including a Grand Circle Island Tour, Hanauma Bay snorkel excursion from Waikiki with equipment included, multiple activities at Kualoa Ranch, general admission to the Polynesian Cultural Center, and lots more. It allows you to skip the line at top sights and saves you up to 55% on regular admission rates.

Go City Oahu Passes are available in 1- and 2-day increments, but only 3-, 5- and 7-day passes give you access to bonus attractions such as a Dolphin Encounter at Sea Life Park, Alii Luau and Dinner show at the Polynesian Cultural Center, or a semi-private surfing lesson. 1- and 2-day cards include the Polynesian Cultural Center; just not the Luau and Dinner show.

Instant delivery! You can now get your pass instantly when you download it as a mobile pass after checkout. You will also receive a link to the pass in your order confirmation email. Along with your pass, you will receive printable and mobile versions of your guidebook containing information about each attraction including location, getting-in instructions, phone number, and hours of operation. Simply choose the “Instant Delivery” option at checkout.

  • Get 5% off your Go City Oahu Pass order  with MouseSavers special deal! You must use Promo Code GO5MOUSESAVER   at checkout to get this offer. No expiration date. This offer may end at any time. This offer may be combined with special sales!
  • Costco.com sometimes offers a very good discount on the Go City Oahu Pass. You don’t have to be a Costco member to buy through their site. (Non-members pay a 5% surcharge, however.) There is a shipping charge when ordering from Costco.com. Thanks to Peter L for info.

Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members may qualify for some discounts on Oahu, away from Aulani. We don’t list them here because they are subject to frequent changes: the best way to see the current offerings is to check the DVC member website . To get the discounts you’ll need to show your blue DVC membership card.

A variety of standard excursions including snorkeling, hiking, and visits to Hawaii tourist spots like Pearl Harbor are offered by Aulani’s Tour Desk. The primary advantage of doing these excursions is that most of them depart from Aulani, so you don’t need to drive. However, you will generally pay a considerable amount more than if you did them on your own. You can certainly book Oahu excursions directly with various tour operators ( Viator’s Oahu Page  or HawaiiActivities.com’s Oahu Page are both good place for learning about and booking dozens of different Oahu tours), but very few of them depart from Ko Olina; they usually have pick up available, but sometimes only from Waikiki hotels or the cruise ship terminal. There are some exceptions; there are several snorkel and dolphin-watching tours now that are run from Ko Olina Marina, which is an easy walk from Aulani, and there are a few helicopter and jeep tours that leave from Ko Olina. Many Ko Olina excursions can be booked directly through HawaiiActivities.com’s Ko Olina Page  (some are also available on Viator’s Ko Olina Page ). Tours that happen in and around Honolulu are probably better booked directly through Aulani in order to get the transportation.

These excursions are operated by third parties (not Disney) and are booked independently from any room or package reservations. They are payable in full at the time they are reserved. Most have a 2 or 3 day cancellation policy. Excursion reservations can be booked online, added to your reservation by your travel agent , or you can book in person in the main lobby at Aulani.

Excursions from Aulani change frequently, check the current list of excursions to see what is available. Prices are typically $70-$500 per person; call or ask your travel agent for pricing on specific excursions).

Food and Restaurants

Bars and lounges.

Makahiki offers a casual 3-course breakfast (with Disney characters daily) and a casual 3-course dinner. See below for sample prices for Makahiki . We strongly recommend making advance reservations for Makahiki, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. If you can’t get reservations online for your desired time, check when you get to the resort. We found that there was some table space reserved for walk-ins.

‘Ama ‘Ama offers a 4-course, fixed price dinner menu featuring contemporary island cuisine. There is a plant-based option available for every course. Reservations are recommended and can be make online.

In addition, there are two beachside/poolside bars and an indoor/outdoor lounge , all of which serve limited bar food.

There are also several  quick service locations: The poolside Ulu Cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner – and features an outdoor patio with ocean view; the others, including the beachside Little ‘Opihi’s, and Mama’s Snack Shop offer snacks like gourmet hot dogs, chicken fingers, wraps and ice cream sandwiches or frozen yogurt. Papalua’s Shave Ice offers only that, in a variety of tropical flavors. You can get a few pricey “grab and go” wraps and salads in the two resort stores , and there is room service .

Across the street from Aulani is Island Country Market (an upscale version of ABC Store), which has a deli area with very reasonably priced take-out food. There is also a selection of health-conscious fare, also reasonably priced. Its grocery prices are high — about the same as Disney’s Aulani gift shop prices — though it has a lot more selection.

Next door to Aulani, the Four Seasons Resort at Ko ‘Olina has several restaurants, including the casual outdoor poolside Waterman Bar , which offers shared bites, Hawaiian and Asian inspired salad and rice bowls, along with burgers, sandwiches and tacos. They also have a very decent kid’s menu with chicken nuggets, teriyaki, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and more. For a fine dining experience there is Mina’s Fish House , a “line-to-table” restaurant featuring local fresh caught seafood in a casual open-air environment overlooking the ocean beach, or Noe , which offers updated takes on traditional Southern Italian dishes. Reservations are recommended for both Mina’s Fish House and Noe.

If you’re looking for more dining options, Roy’s Ko ‘Olina is located at the Ko ‘Olina Golf Club, close to Aulani. Roy’s is a well-regarded chain of high-end “Hawaiian fusion” restaurants.

If you are on a tight budget, skip the Four Seasons Resort and head across the street to the Ko ‘Olina Center & Station , a 5 minute walk. There are several dining options including MonkeyPod Kitchen Restaurant , a popular evening spot with live music, creative cocktails and cuisine crafted from local ingredients sourced from Hawaii’s farms. Appetizers range from garlic oil truffle fries to poke tacos, and entrees include pizza, salads, burgers and fresh caught fish dishes. MonkeyPod Kitchen is known for it’s cream pies, and if you have room after dinner you’ll want to try a slice. You’ll also find a Black Sheep Cream Company ice cream shop, Tropic Poke and Mekiko Cantina in the shopping center. While you can spend significantly less at these restaurants than you might at Aulani’s full-service choices, you can still expect to pay $18-$35 and upwards per adult, excluding drinks.

Aulani has three bars: two outdoor pool/beach bars (Off the Hook and Wailana Pool Bar) and one indoor/outdoor lounge in the lower level, below the lobby (Olelo Room). Most of the featured cocktails are around $16, and in our experience they are terrible. Their recipes all seem to be cloyingly sweet, yet flavorless.

You will do slightly better (lower price and it’s harder for them to screw the drink up) if you order a very simple liquor-on-the-rocks or liquor-plus-mixer type drink (Baileys on the rocks, gin and tonic, etc.). Avoid complex mixed drinks like Mojitos. Beer is at least a safe bet. Wine is high-priced (5 times retail, so a glass will cost you about the retail price of a bottle of the same wine), but at least the selection is good.

Across the street from Aulani is Island Country Market (an upscale version of ABC Store), which has an excellent wine selection. Prices are a little high, but compared with buying wine at Aulani, it’s a bargain.

Aulani has its own luau, KA WA’A – A Lū’au at Aulani . The luau is about 3 hours long and currently only for guests staying at Aulani. Performances are held on select nights, weather permitting. Seating will be assigned upon arrival. The price for general seating is $175 per adult and $104 per child (age 3-9), plus tax. The price for Preferred seating is $204 per adult and $124 per child (age 3-9), plus tax. The prices include gratuity. Check out Kris Borchardt’s November 2016 review of Aulani’s KA WA’A Lū’au .

  • Find out more information or book KA WA’A – A Lū’au at Aulani.

Paradise Cove Luau is also a good choice , located immediately on the other side of the next resort over from Aulani (the Four Seasons at Ko Olina), so it’s very close to Aulani and requires no transportation. We like this luau about as well as the Aulani one, and it’s only slightly further away.

  • You can book the luau in advance at   HawaiiActivities.com , directly with Paradise Cove , or through the tour desk at Aulani. The price is the same either way, but HawaiiActivities has a loyalty program that gets you points that can be applied toward other bookings, so if you have other Ko Olina activities you want to book through them, that’s a little extra savings.

If you are a Costco member, you will definitely want to stop at the Costco in Kapolei, about 4 miles from Aulani. It is by far the best place to stock up on essentials, and it offers a nice variety of Hawaiian specialties like kalua pig, pork lau lau, ahi poke , Portuguese sausage, Hawaiian sweet bread, lomi lomi salmon, Kona coffee, POG (passion fruit/orange/guava) juice, pineapples and more. You can even buy leis and exotic floral arrangements. Costco also usually has the best gas prices on the island.

Another good option is the Target in Kapolei, also about 4 miles from Aulani. You can pick up basic foods and beach items like snorkel gear, sand chairs, beach umbrellas, etc. Having your own gear can save you a fortune compared to the cost of renting beach equipment from Aulani .

Even if you don’t plan to have a rental car, you can walk over to Island Country Market , across the street from Aulani. The food prices are about the same as what you’ll pay at Aulani, but there is a lot more selection. We don’t recommend doing a lot of grocery shopping here: it would be like buying all your groceries at 7-11, price-wise. However, the market has a very nice selection of wines and offers things like inexpensive, basic snorkel sets.

Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members get 10% off Aulani beach rentals, Rainbow Reef snorkeling and full-day cabana rentals. To get the discounts you’ll need to show your DVC membership card.

Getting to Hawaii

Transfers to/from honolulu airport, parking fees, checking in and out.

Links to major airlines that fly to/from Honolulu from North American mainland cities:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Airlines

Read our information and advice about how to save on airfare.

There are no Disney-provided transfers between the Honolulu Airport and the resort. We strongly encourage you to rent a car ( check our rental car discount information ). Otherwise you’ll have to take a taxi, which will be costly because the resort is 17 miles from the airport.

If you prefer to rent a car only for the drive to/from the airport, or for only part of your stay, Alamo has a rental car desk at Aulani (location code is HNLR72).

General Excise Tax (similar to sales tax) of 4.712% applies to almost all transactions on Oahu, including food, gas and medicine.

If you are using DVC points for your stay at Aulani, be aware that a Transient Accommodations Tax of 9.25%, times 1/2 of the per-point Aulani maintenance fees, times the number of points used, must be paid at the resort. This applies to those renting points as well. In short, you’ll be paying tax of roughly 26.5 cents per point used. For example, if you stayed for a week in Adventure Season in 2011, in an Oceanview 1-Bedroom Villa, the total points required would be 322, times ~26.5 cents, for a total tax of ~$85.33 due at checkout.

If you are paying cash for your stay, the tax on your room rate is just a hair under 14%.

Disney’s Aulani Resort: A Deluxe Studio Room Review

Aloha! Our park reporter Chrissy just returned from a recent stay at Aulani, a Disney resort and spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii!

Aulani is an award-winning resort and one that many fans feel is the best Disney has ever created. While the fact that it’s an ocean-front resort in Hawaii definitely helps, it’s worth noting that Aulani was also designed to capture the culture and history of the islands along with those signature Disney touches.

aulani vs disney cruise

For those looking to book a stay in a villa, options range from a studio to a 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, or 3-bedroom villa.

For Chrissy’s visit with her own ohana, she stayed in one of Aulani’s DVC Deluxe Studio villas which is most comparable to a standard resort room.

aulani vs disney cruise

Aulani Deluxe Studio Villa Room Tour

During her visit to paradise, Chrissy stayed in Room 1157 on the 11th floor of the resort.

aulani vs disney cruise

This studio was an Island Gardens View with 1 Queen bed and 1 Queen sleeper sofa and a maximum occupancy of four adults.

aulani vs disney cruise

Upon entering the room and to the right, Chrissy found a storage closet and kitchenette. The latter is one of the perks of booking a studio villa.

aulani vs disney cruise

The kitchenette was fitted with a large mini-fridge, microwave, sink, coffee pot, as well as paper towels, paper and plastic plates, cups, cutlery, coffee, and tea.

aulani vs disney cruise

Here’s a peek inside the cabinets…

aulani vs disney cruise

To the left of the entryway was where she found the studio’s bathroom.

aulani vs disney cruise

Unfortunately, the vanity only had one sink but there’s plenty of counter space and shelves for storage.

aulani vs disney cruise

Plus, Aulani STILL provides free individual bottles of H2o lotion, shampoo, body wash, and conditioner!

aulani vs disney cruise

Now, unlike most Disney World resort hotels and villas, the shower is located just to the right of the vanity.

aulani vs disney cruise

It’s a standard tub and shower combo but with a rain head; and again, no mounted pumps in sight! Told you this was paradise.

aulani vs disney cruise

To the left of the vanity is a pocket door separating the main bathroom space from the water closet.

aulani vs disney cruise

Like those at Disney World resort hotels, having this extra space and privacy is a huge win.

aulani vs disney cruise

Heading back into the main part of the villa, we’ve got a full-length mirror which, in our opinion, every resort and hotel should have.

aulani vs disney cruise

Under the large flatscreen television, the dresser is pretty standard, but extra drawer space is always appreciated.

aulani vs disney cruise

The room also had the typical table and chairs set up, but the real star of this space was the number of outlets and that Mickey lamp! But more on the Big Cheese here in a sec.

aulani vs disney cruise

We need to talk about the sleeper sofa. It may look small, but Chrissy is happy to report that it’s SUPER comfortable.

aulani vs disney cruise

As promised, we’re circling back on the Mickey lamp because he’s wearing CROCS! Look for yourself and tell us we’re wrong.

aulani vs disney cruise

The studio’s Island Gardens View offered a view of the mountain sunrise. Thankfully, there was no traffic noise at all but do be prepared for loud and regular birdsong.

aulani vs disney cruise

In addition to an Island Gardens View, Aulani also offers a Standard View, a Poolside Gardens View, and an Ocean View. Do keep in mind that these options may only include a partial view of what they describe.

aulani vs disney cruise

Also, even though this villa is located near the elevator bank, it wasn’t so close that noise was an issue.

Final Thoughts & Comparisons

For 4 nights, 2 adults, and 1 child, this Deluxe Studio + a Travel Protection Plan + Hele Hele Transportation to and from HNL was priced at $3,606.16 during the time of Chrissy’s visit.

In terms of size, Aulani’s Deluxe Studios villas measure 356 sq. feet, which is on par with Disney’s Beach Club and Wilderness Lodge Studio Villas. However, they’re not quite as spacious as those at Animal Kingdom Lodge, the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Boardwalk, and so on.

Also, while Aulani’s focus on authentic Hawaiian design has been carried over into its accommodations, some of the furnishings and bathroom spaces didn’t appear as updated as we’ve seen at Walt Disney World’s resort villas.

aulani vs disney cruise

However, instead of a kitchenette, standard rooms only have a refreshment bar with a small fridge, coffee maker, and tea service. Plus, points can not be used to book a standard room.

Overall, Aulani is an incredible vacation experience and one that never fails to impress! If you’re interested in experiencing this resort for yourself, consider having one of our Travel Experts send you a free quote for Aulani today!

We just got back from a 3-night stay in a standard room (1135). Bathroom looks identical to the pictures posted (only you apparently got a bar of soap, that was missing in our room on check-in!). Coffee was in K-cups and there was a good number of them which was nice as we never saw housekeeping once except to remove trash on day 2 by a woman pulling a large bag behind her. Appreciated the alcove at the foot of each bed to keep luggage from underfoot, although my daughter thought the beds were too tall. The wall shelf next to the bed was a nice touch for glasses and phones if you didn’t have the table side of the bed. Partial Ocean View also meant a view of the hills, parking structure, and the Four Seasons tennis courts atop what I assumed was their parking garage. Balcony had two chairs and a tiny table, no chaise lounge. One of the 6 elevators (the one with the Menehune at the top) was broken our whole stay & the Hawaiian version of Disney music I remember from 2015 was gone (only caught snatches of it walking past the sample DVC rooms).

I’m not fussed about having pumps for soap etc (I bring my own toiletries anyway), so that doesn’t affect my stay. However, I found the bed at Aulani incredibly hard and uncomfortable.

I was at Aulani last month for 7 nights and I had a deluxe studio with an ocean view and I loved it. There was enough of an ocean view to satisfy me as I sat on my balcony. The size of the main room and bathroom was perfect for me. I loved having the kitchenette because I took a couple excursions that left around 9 am and I was able to have a decent breakfast in my room (with food I had bought at Ulu Cafe earlier) before I left on my excursions. I want to go back to Aulani soon.

Should Hawaii-bound families visit Disney’s Aulani resort in 2021?

Leslie Harvey

For better or for worse, Americans have been flocking in near-record numbers to Hawaii this summer. With many international destinations still closed or restricted to American tourists in ever-changing ways, Hawaii has fit the bill for travelers wanting a more far-flung vacation without all the hassle of crossing international borders during a global pandemic.

My husband, two kids and I were some of those Hawaii-bound tourists this summer. We spent a week on Oahu in late July and early August 2021 at Disney's Aulani resort. This was our family's fourth visit to Aulani since the Disney property opened nearly a decade ago, so we've experienced it in a variety of different phases and have seen its offerings change over time.

Related: I love Hawaii, but I'm not going back anytime soon — here's why

To protect the health and safety of cast members and guests alike, Aulani is naturally operating quite a bit differently now than it did on our previous visits. If you are contemplating a trip to Aulani and trying to decide whether a vacation in the near term is worth it, here are the essential differences to keep in mind.

Disney Aulani basics

aulani vs disney cruise

Before we dive into the changes at Aulani, let's start with what you need to know about the resort generally and how it operated in pre-COVID-19 times.

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, is a standalone Disney resort property on the island of Oahu. The resort is part hotel and part Disney Vacation Club property (Disney's take on the timeshare. Here's how to save money by renting Disney Vacation Club points ).

Unlike at Disneyland or Walt Disney World , there are no theme parks or rides at Aulani. It's much more akin to a full-service family-friendly Hawaiian resort like the Grand Hyatt Kauai , with a few extra Disney touches. The resort is also often compared to a Disney cruise on land because so many activities and entertainment offerings are included (but not food). TPG's full review of Aulani has even more detail on how the resort operated until its pandemic-induced closure in March 2020.

The resort reopened in November 2020, not long after the state of Hawaii reopened to tourism. The offerings upon reopening were originally quite limited, but many have slowly returned in the intervening months. That said, Aulani is not operating as freely as Walt Disney World and is still even a bit more restrictive than what's happening at Disneyland.

Hawaii means business with its COVID-19 precautions

aulani vs disney cruise

Before heading to Aulani, it's vital to understand that the state of Hawaii is taking some of the strictest COVID-19 precautions anywhere in the United States. Hawaii is a geographically isolated place, so the islands are in real danger if the healthcare system is overrun. As a result, the state has maintained tight control on permitted business operations that affect hotels like Aulani. The regulations will ultimately dictate how you can go about your vacation.

Related: What it's like traveling to Hawaii while vaccinated

Hawaii requires all visitors to comply with its Hawaii Safe Travels program . Guests who want to avoid a mandatory quarantine must present proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test from a list of approved partner labs taken no more than 72 hours before departure from the mainland. It can still be tricky to navigate and confusing, particularly if you have kids too young to be vaccinated, as was the case with my 7-year-old.

Hawaii is also the only state in the country that did not drop its indoor mask mandate for any period of time this spring or summer. While masks are no longer required outdoors, Aulani guests are expected to wear masks in all indoor locations. Practically speaking, this means grabbing a mask if you want to run into the quick-service poolside restaurant, Ulu Cafe, to grab a soda or refill a popcorn bucket. Our family hails from the San Francisco Bay Area, where masking practices are similar to Hawaii, and even we found it a little awkward to manage masks poolside all of the time. Wind and water didn't always make the logistics easy!

I was comforted to see that the vast majority of guests at Aulani ultimately respected the local rules in spite of the occasional inconvenience. Mask-wearing indoors was near-universal. Guests usually gave plenty of space to both cast members and fellow guests alike.

Aulani was operating with about 70% capacity during our stay, which gave everyone a little breathing room in the usual choke points, such as around the pools and waiting for elevators. Having been a guest when the resort was at 98% capacity on a holiday weekend before the pandemic, the crowds are certainly more manageable right now.

Some activities are limited, but a few changes are actually improvements

aulani vs disney cruise

While the minor mask mishaps barely rated in altering our vacation, we did notice more changes to the activity and entertainment offerings at Aulani.

Some of the daily activities offered at the Pau Hana room were not running or were modified. These are normally a great break from the pools and the sun, but indoor offerings are minimal. We lucked into the free ukulele lessons on the one week they returned to the resort this year. (Those are now shuttered again since Hawaii implemented additional restrictions last week to address rising COVID-19 cases in the state.)

There were also no parties dancing with characters by the pool and no group activities on the beach like the sandcastle contests our kids have loved on previous trips. The resort's free sand toys for kids on the beach have even been suspended.

Since I have kids ages 7 and 12, what we missed most, though was the kids club. Affectionately called Aunty's Beach House , the kids club has been a highlight of all of our previous trips. Like the Oceaneer Lab and Oceaneer Club aboard Disney Cruise Line, it's a place kids beg to be dropped off because the staff and activities are so amazing. And parents oblige because that means the chance for a kid-free date night or spa appointment.

aulani vs disney cruise

Aunty's is normally included in the price of an Aulani stay. With the offering paused, that certainly changes the potential value of an Aulani vacation for families who would otherwise take advantage. Interestingly, when Disney Cruise Line recently began sailing some of its ships again, those ships have offered the onboard kids club. Hopefully, this bodes well for the eventual return of Aunty's Beach House at Aulani.

But for all that was missing, there was still a ton to do. We spent most of our days by various pools and water features. The lazy river (Waikolohe Stream), waterslides (Volcanic Vertical and Tubestone Curl), toddler splash pad (Keiki Cove) and kids water playground (Menehune Bridge) were fully operational in addition to regular pools and hot tubs and entertained us for hours.

Rainbow Reef, the resort's snorkeling lagoon filled with tropical fish and paddleboard rentals on the beach were open as well for an additional fee. Everyone in the family also really enjoyed the addition of a Make Your Own Mickey Ears craft project offered several times daily for a reasonable additional fee.

aulani vs disney cruise

We also found that the resort's modified character meet-and-greets turned out to be a major highlight. Now mostly on a side lawn away from the action of the central pool area, lines are short. Characters are often accompanied by Photopass photographers (you can purchase the photos for an additional fee) or even the occasional live musician. We saw every character in Aulani residence during our stay, including a few that are not available in the U.S. parks. For any Disney superfans, the character experiences are a definite upgrade.

We were pleasantly surprised to find the resort's Laniwai Spa open along with Painted Sky next door. Painted Sky is Aulani's version of the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, where children can get Hawaiian-style makeovers. With the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique still closed in both Florida and California, my 12-year-old felt she lucked out being able to make an appointment at Aulani before she ages out of the experience.

aulani vs disney cruise

Expect limited and modified dining

Like the activities, the restaurant and dining offerings are also a bit different at the moment.

Most of the restaurants at Aulani are operating close to normal, with some capacity limitations as state regulations dictate. Almost all of Aulani's restaurants have outdoor seating and much of the indoor areas are open air. We returned often to our favorite, the Olelo Room, a restaurant and bar featuring live Hawaiian music nightly. The variety of shared plates, tropical cocktails and sushi bar make this restaurant a standout.

aulani vs disney cruise

Where the modifications in dining might be more noticeable is in the premium offerings. The resort's signature restaurant, 'AMA 'AMA remains closed despite being in an open-air location. There is no projected date for reopening.

Both the character breakfast held at Makahiki restaurant and the resort's evening luau are operating, but with changes. Most noticeably, both have ditched their buffet service for now. Normally the spread at both is pretty decadent, so the a la carte service that has replaced the buffets feels like less of a value. In addition, the character meal no longer has characters roaming near tables and has a reduced number of characters to see. As we had experienced both offerings before, we probably should have skipped them this trip.

aulani vs disney cruise

Guests traveling to Aulani for the first time though will likely find value in them, even in this modified form. The luau is normally one of my most recommended splurges on an Aulani vacation , so I'd prioritize that if you are choosing only one of the two for budget purposes. The show itself is still just as fantastic (and drinks are still included). Bookings for character dining and the luau both fill up quickly, so make reservations as soon as possible.

Is Aulani worth it in 2021?

So with some offerings reduced and capacity limited, would I recommend Aulani in 2021? We certainly had a highly relaxing and much-needed vacation. It was a pleasant surprise that some of the changes even seemed to work in our favor, like the character meet-and-greets. The pandemic has most definitely changed what is "worth it" to many travelers, us included. No regrets! But my husband and I definitely cringed on occasion, recognizing that we were paying the full rack rate at Aulani for less. (Related: How to save money on an Aulani vacation .)

I would suspect that many travelers who never had been to Aulani, though and weren't familiar with the pre-COVID-19 operations, would never have recognized that much of anything was amiss. There were still amazing pools, waterslides, activities, characters and dining opportunities. In fact, there was so much to do so that we opted not to leave the resort for a full week this trip. To be fair, some of the reason for our decision to stay put was the challenge and expense of rental cars in Hawaii. But we were a content captive audience, fully entertained the entire time.

aulani vs disney cruise

Bottom line

All that said, Aulani travelers should do careful research for trips in the coming months and keep up with local news. Everything in Hawaii is a moving target at the moment. Many travelers are becoming increasingly uncomfortable with whether travel to Hawaii in the near term is advisable at all. Since our visit, Hawaii's governor has already tightened up rules again in response to surging COVID-19 cases in the state. More changes could always be coming, whether to Hawaii Safe Travel requirements for entry into the state or to the offerings a resort like Aulani can operate.

If you are able to travel to Aulani safely and responsibly, it still has much of the Disney magic and Hawaiian aloha spirit to offer, even with restrictions in place.
