About 20 kilometers northwest of Kuta, Pura Tanah Lot ("Pura" means temple in Balinese) is one of Bali's most iconic temples. Its spectacular seaside setting, on a rocky islet surrounded by crashing waves, is a major wow factor.

Once visitors have fought their way through the souvenir vendors to the beach, they will see the magnificent temple perched on a rock just a few meters offshore. The natural beauty of the surroundings, with the temple silhouette against the ocean backdrop, creates a truly mesmerizing scene.

Perched among the terraced rice fields that climb up the foothills of Bali’s central mountains, Ubud is considered the island’s cultural heart. great information. I’m from southern Bali, yesterday I came to Sekumpul waterfall, the view was very nice, located in the countryside. Even though I had to go down the stairs, after arriving at the location it felt cool.

I was in central Kuta in January of 2014 and near by beach was completely covered in garbage. Locals say it’s only seasonal and that it comes from Java. I hope nobody else will be disappointed like I was. Otherwise cool place that could use some sidewalks.

Tirta Gangga water palace is also a great place to visit in Bali. Btw, stay over night (or even for two nights) on Lembongan is recommended. You can explore the island, do more water sports and visit Ceningan.

The sunrise, as seen from the peak, is spectacular. Not for the faint of heart—or anyone who loathes early-morning wake-up calls—the ascent takes around two hours. But once you’ve reached the top, you might witness one of the most majestic mist-sheathed vistas you’ve ever seen.

Pura Lempuyang Luhur Arrow

Located far from the tourist hubbub of Ubud , Lempuyang Temple is a sacred seven-temple complex in eastern Bali best known for the Gateway to Heaven that perfectly frames the formidable Mount Agung, the island’s tallest peak. This is one of the most majestic sights in Bali—come for sunrise for the best, least crowdede results—and it’s also a significant Hindu temple. Entrance requires a donation, a sarong (also available on loan), and a 40,000 rupiah ($3) round-trip jeep shuttle up the steep mountainside.

Beyond the ticketed entrance is a series of mid-rise canyons lining the Oos River: prepare to climb, wade, swim, and scale your way through a rocky-tropical landscape not seen anywhere else on the island. Guides are necessary for safety and if possible, avoid rainy season as the currents can rise to dangerous levels—the canyon closes on days when it’s especially hazardous.

Menjangan Island Arrow

The sunsets here are among Bali’s most sensational. As an add-on, the daily kecak dance performances (about $7), with chants, costumed performances, and rings of fire, make the setting even more enchanting.

Tirta Empul Arrow

Tirta Empul (“Holy Spring”), an important sacred water temple for more than 1,000 years, contains a warren of shrines, gates, courtyards, and purification pools where Balinese Hindus “baptize” themselves underneath a succession of waterspouts. Equally popular with travelers, the temple commands a 15,000 rupiah ($1) entry fee and the wearing of a sarong.

Banyumala Twin Waterfalls Arrow

Tucked deep in the lush North Bali highlands are the Banyumala Twin Waterfalls, a mighty pair of 11-story-tall falls that cascade into a natural pool. The far-out location—at least two hours from the main drags of Ubud and Seminyak—and the steep hike keep the crowds delightfully low. This spot is perfect for anyone in search of Bali’s raw natural beauty—sans the typical tourist pack. Come early to maximize your time.

Thomas Beach Arrow

Thomas Beach, located in the south of Bali not far from Uluwatu, is a long, sprawling, white-sand beach flanked by willowy palm trees. It's managed to keep itself a well-guarded secret, drawing only the most curious travelers. The steps down to the beach put some visitors off—those who do manage them will find all the more space to spread out and sip on fresh coconut water from one of the vendors.

Tirta Gangga Arrow

Although Tirta Gangga ($2 entry), a former palace turned lavish water gardens, looks like it has existed for several centuries, it was actually conceived in 1946 by the royal Karangasem family. But its far-reaching east Bali location hasn’t stopped travelers from exploring its magical fountains, shrubs, sculptures, and flowers, or positioning themselves on the octagonal stepping stones and feeding the carp. There are also stone spring water pools and you can even swim in one of them.

Echo Beach Arrow

Echo Beach, Batu Bolong' s immediate northern neighbor, shares a lot of its attributes; among them, charcoal brown sand, stellar surf breaks, and bounteous eating and drinking options. But Echo feels less developed, and the waves are bigger and better for surf enthusiasts. Locals and an increasing number of tourists are congregating here more, but you’ll still have ample breathing space to lay, gaze, meander, or dip your toes in the water.

Sekumpul Waterfall Arrow

If exploring Bali’s paradiscal scenery is a priority, a visit to Sekumpul Waterfall is practically essential. It is considered by many to be the island’s finest waterfall destination. Like most North Bali waterfalls, accessing Sekumpul will require some sweat. It’ll take around an hour to walk the trails and make your way down the verdant ravine, but once you do you'll be rewarded with a vast expanse of idyllic tropical landscapes, and grand-scale falls, which appear to pour from the heavens.  

Pantai Pasir Putih Arrow

Wedged between two headlands, Pantai Pasir Putih (or White Sand Beach) is known as one of Bali’s best “secret” beaches—though the word has definitely gotten out. Those in the know travel here to east Bali to enjoy a more laid-back experience and access to perfectly blue waters—attributes hard to come by in the popular western beaches. The water is more than fine: the clarity is among the best seen around the island, and is calm enough for leisurely swims and snorkels.

Kuta is known as the party capital of Bali and it’s very very westernized.

When I first visited years ago, there was no beach shopping mall with designer stores or a range of fabulous beachfront restaurants. But when I visited again in 2019, I was actually shocked by just how “not Bali” Kuta is!

But saying that, if you’re craving something more Americanized, or you want to go clubbing, then Kuta is a good place to be.

There’s also the famous Kuta Beachwalk, which is literally a beachside shopping mall right across the beach. It’s actually a nice place to cool down on days that are just too hot.

The beach itself now has a great sidewalk that goes on for kilometres, so you can walk along it, go on a run, etc, if you don’t feel like walking on the sand.

Plus, there are many street food vendors along the beach selling local favourites like bakso !

Top things to do in Kuta

• Surfing: beginner surf in Kuta is great! We recommend booking a lesson with 27 Surf Bali , where you’ll get a private coach to teach you the fundamentals of surfing.
• Party: There are quite a few bars and clubs that stay open late to party 
• Head to a Spa: Some of the cheapest spas in Bali are located in Kuta, I got a full body massage for £4 and my nails done for £2...bliss!

2. Seminyak

Seminyak is one of the great places to visit in Bali for couples as well as families.

Seminyak for me has a little more class and sophistication to it and it’s home to a strip of the best beach bars and restaurants in Bali.

It’s probably one of my favourite places in Bali to visit . 

It’s also a popular area among both local and foreign tourists, so it’s pretty fun as you can meet all sorts of people here.

The best way to explore Seminyak is on foot. Whether you’re staying the area or just visiting, skip the car and motorbike, and just… walk.

This way, you can pop in and out of all the shops, and trust me, there’s a lot!

From boutique shops, gelato stores, awesome cafes, and even night clubs, Seminyak has all you need and it caters wonderfully for vegans.

• Hit up the spas: Seminyak is bursting with quality spas and brunch locations, so combine the two for a wonderful morning. 
• Head to a beach club: There are a variety of beach clubs and bars on the beach that allow you to enjoy the fantastic sunsets that Seminyak (Double six beach) provides. 
• Party: Mexicola is one of the hottest new bars in Seminyak to have a few drinks and a great night. Seminyak is home to lots of great bars, but they are much more expensive than say, those in Kuta!

I love Uluwatu for many reasons and it’s one of the great places to visit in Bali, especially if you want epic sunsets.

I still haven’t found a sunset that beats the one I experienced at Uluwatu Temple.

(On that note, this is one of Bali’s most famous temples, and don’t miss out on its breathtaking kecak fire dance performance ).

Uluwatu is also the “it spot” for intermediate surfers. The beaches here are home to some of the best waves on the island.

And the beaches in this area are all incredible!

They’re the type with white sand and turquoise blue waters , and a lot of them are surrounded by cliffs, making for quite a picturesque sight.

Then, there’s the iconic Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, or ‘GWK’ for short. It’s a 121-metre Vishnu monument that stands on a 46-metres pedestal. In other words, very tall and impressive.

Uluwatu is located in south of Bali, so you’ll either need to hire a driver, or ride a moped to visit.

4. Balangan

Balangan is a small region of Bali located south west and it’s home to some of the bluest waters on Bali island. 

Because you will soon notice, Bali doesn’t really have “pretty” waters or beaches, compared to say the Philippines, or even the Gili Islands and other areas of Indonesia

But in addition to the nearby Uluwatu, Balangan beach is absolutely beautiful.

Not to mention that it offers great surf.

If you’ve heard of Dreamland Beach, which is popular for surfers, Balangan Beach is pretty much next to it, separated only by a huge cliff rock.

It’s not very crowded compared to other more popular areas in Bali, making it the perfect place to stay if you want to chill, laze around, and enjoy the beach.

5. Jimbaran

A beautiful seaside village or fishing town, Jimbaran offers tranquil beaches which are perfect for sunbathing.

There aren't any waves here (at least when I visited) so it was perfect for swimming too!

But what Jimbaran is truly known for is their incredible seafood.

People from all over the island would travel to Jimbaran just to enjoy the freshest, most diverse selection of seafood. 

From king prawns and lobsters to mussels, various fishes, and calamari, you name it. This is where you can feast like a king.

It’s home to iconic fish markets where some of Bali’s most famous restaurants get their fish from daily.

And indeed, there’s nothing quite like the experience of an epic seafood dinner by the beach , which is a must-do in Jimbaran!

6. Buleleng

Buleleng is an area in north Bali that is home to some of the best waterfalls in Bali (which you can read all about here ), including Gitgit waterfall.

The capital of the area Singaraja is a great base for some unique Airbnbs (I can suggest sunset sala for the most epic accommodation among rice paddies).

Another major area in Buleleng province is Lovina, best known for the dolphins that swim freely in its beaches. And yes, you can swim with the dolphins!

Buleleng itself has a host of art galleries and cooking workshops, hot springs, temples, rice terraces, and scenic lakes.

Basically, it has a bit of everything!

And because it is located quite far out from the airport, it’s not as crowded as places like Kuta or Seminyak, which makes it a nice change of pace for when you want some quiet.

Sidemen is one of those rare, almost undiscovered places to visit in Bali.

It’s located quite close to Mount Agung, an active volcano that’s also the highest point on the island. So you can see the mountain range decorating the backdrop all over Sidemen.

Granted, it has gained a bit of traction recently, and there are certainly more tourists there than before, but it’s still relatively underrated and peaceful.

It holds the most beautiful rice paddies in all of Bali, which I think is way better than Ubud.

With its lush green landscapes and welcoming locals, Sidemen has such a welcoming and warm atmosphere that I love.

The accommodation options are filled with beautiful villas that are settled among the paddies and it’s just a dream.

Sidemen is also home to some of the island’s most talented silver smiths , and a lot of silver jewelry sold in gift shops around Bali comes from here. And you can actually attend a silver class and make your very own silver jewelry!

Gianyar is a great place to visit in Bali that’s very close to Ubud, so it doesn’t take much effort to get there.

It’s also got some great waterfalls and the famous Bali Zoo. 

It’s the first zoological park in Bali that’s home to more than 600 rare animals over 12+ hectares of land, and very unique experiences, like breakfast with orangutans.

Lemurs, Bali mynas, zebras, and baby elephants… You name it. This is the perfect place to visit if you’re travelling with kids!

9. Amlapura

The Amlapura region is one of the less discovered areas of Bali and therefore one of the best places to visit in Bali if you’re looking for something different !

It’s located about 2 and half hour drive from Canggu, or less than 2 hours from Ubud.

It’s the regency seat of Karangasem on the eastern side of Bali and home to some stunning palaces, some of which are the residence of the local royal family!

This area is not very bustling and thus ideal if you want to escape the more crowded hotspots of Bali.

• Check out the beautiful Taman Ujung, or Balai Gili water palace. A remnant of the Dutch East Indies era, it’s a remarkable architectural destination. This one-day tour is fantastic as it will also take you to Candidasa Village afterward.

Sanur is located on the east coast of Bali and it’s one of the most popular places to visit in Bali for families.

This is thanks to the family-friendly resorts, the great beaches, and the popular water sports activities. 

The most epic of them all is probably wakeboarding! You’re standing on a wakeboard and getting pulled around by a boat. It’s like surfing, but easier.

Kitesurfing is also a popular choice for water adventures in Sanur.

Sanur’s coastline runs about 8km, including Mertasari Beach, Segara Ayu Beach, Sindhu Beach, and more.

You can rent an e-bike (or regular bike) and cycle along the coasts.

If you’re into cultural sights, Le Mayeur Museum showcases the artwork of Brussels-born artist, Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur.

Oil paintings and local artifacts, and the building itself has traditional Balinese architecture.

There’s also Blanjong Temple, home to artefacts from AD 914, a turtle hatchery and conservatory, and even an 18-hole golf course.

The food scene in Sanur is nothing short of impressive too. You’ll find a good mixture of local street food, nice restaurants, and great cafes.

11. Lempuyang

Lempuyang is a region which has grown in popularity over recent years due to the beautiful Bali Gates of Heaven, an iconic photo spot that when taken at the right time of day, gives you a backdrop of Mount Agung. 

When I first visited Bali, this wasn’t even on the radar of things to do, now it’s too popular! 

These “gates” are actually a Hindu temple called Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang , and of the most important ones in Bali.

Most people come to Lempuyang just for this temple, but there are actually other attractions nearby.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace is a complex of pools and fountains with koi fishes you can feed.

Then, there’s Bukit Cinta, a Mount Agung viewpoint where you can catch a magical sunrise .

Top Things to do in Lempuyang

• Climb up the mountains temples for amazing views

Amed is an area located on the north east coast of Bali, in the Karangasem Regency.

This is the spot to go for scuba diving and snorkelling .

Whether you’ve never gone diving before or are a seasoned diver, you really shouldn’t miss Amed.

The corals and underwater sceneries here are extraordinary , and some of the best you’ll find in the world.

But even if you don’t like diving, it’s home to some beautiful beaches, such as Amed Beach, Jemeluk Beach, and Lipah Beach.

There are plenty of nice resorts and hotels here and a great place to visit in Bali for families. 

Amed is also known for its salt farmers, and you can visit the Sea Salt Farm to see first-hand the traditional process of extracting salt from seawater .

Top things to do in Amed:

13. Kintamani (Mount Batur)

So I’ve listed Mount Batur as one of the best places to visit in Bali, because you can visit the area without even hiking.

The mountain itself is located in Kintamani, where you can also find the beautiful Lake Batur and Pura Ulun Danu Batur, which is an important temple found on a tiny island in the middle of the lake !

The temple's name itself is a nod to the fact that it’s located on the lake, which represents the importance of water to the prosperity of the locals.

On the 10th full moon of every year, a huge, traditional ceremony known as odalan is held here.

There are tons of cute cafes with the most breathtaking mountain views in Kintamani. We recommend visiting one of them at around 5 am, just in time to catch the sunrise!

Last but not least, people do a sunrise hike to Mount Batur , which is honestly one of the best things to do in Bali, it’s amazing!

14. Jatiluwih

Jatiluwih is one of the places in Bali that’s up and coming. 

As more and more people flock to the rice terraces of Ubud, others are seeking some solace in new ones. Well, Jatiluwih has that for you.

With some of the most stunning rice terrace landscapes in Bali, Jatiluwih itself is a village in the Tabanan Regency.

Perhaps the most famous attraction here is the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, which is a 600-hectare paradise of picturesque rice fields . It’s actually a UNESCO heritage site.

These terraces are nestled about 850 meters above sea level , making it a cool and refreshing area. Perfect for a break from the beaches!

Between February and April is the best time to visit as this is when the rice plants are in their most vivid green colors .

This is also a great place to see the traditional Subak irrigation system in practice, which has been used by local farmers for many centuries.

The village of Munduk is nestled in the Buleleng Regency of Bali.

It’s best known for its lush green landscapes, many plantations, hidden waterfalls, and gorgeous valleys .

Munduk is one of my favourite places to visit in Bali if you’re looking for a cooler climate. 

Bali can get scorching hot, but if you head to Munduk, it’s a little colder, and in the evenings, you may even find you need a jacket!

The plantations in Munduk are home to a variety of crops, from cloves and coffee to vanilla, chocolate, and second crops.

For one of the most iconic photo spots in Bali, you won’t want to miss the Handara Gate. It’s unbelievably picturesque with its striking carvings, and it’s actually an entryway to a golf course!

• Visit The Munduk Coffee Plantation (famous for its beautiful infinity pool with views!)

16. Nusa Penida

Again, when I first visited Bali years ago, trips to the nearby Nusa islands weren’t really a thing.

But in recent years tourism there has soared, which has thankfully resulted in them fixing the roads (they used to be so small and beyond dangerous!).

Now, you should know that the Nusa islands are comprised of three major islands : Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan, as well as 12 even smaller islands.

There’s no need to visit all three, and people usually stay in one island for a few nights, before taking day trips to the other islands.

Nusa Penida is the largest of them all and has the most options in terms of things to do.

You get a short boat ride from Bali (usually Sanur port) and you can spend the day or even a couple of days on Nusa Penida.

There’s so much to see and do on these beautiful islands and it’s totally different from Bali!

17. Nusa Lembongan

Another one of the Nusa islands is Lembongan, and it’s even closer from Bali by boat.

Lembongan is the perfect place if you want to do snorkelling on beautiful blue, clear waters (The type of waters that Bali doesn’t really have!) 

Nusa Lembongan is up and coming too, and since it’s smaller than Nusa Penida, it’s very popular to do a day trip to this island .

It’s approximately only 8 square kilometres in area and has a population of around 5,000.

But the best thing is that there’s a suspension bridge linking Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan , and it’s super easy to cross by foot or motorbike, so that you can tackle both islands at once.

18. Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua is located in the south east of Bali, but it's the home of watersports in Bali. 

Ps. Don’t get this mixed up as one of the Nusa islands. Nusa Dua is located in South Kuta and very close to the airport area.

It’s only around 20 minutes from Kuta and 15 minutes from Jimbaran.

The beaches are beautifully sandy with blue waters and it’s the cheapest place to get your jet skis and have fun in the water. 

Other than being a hotspot for water sports, Nusa Dua is best known for its enclave of five-star resorts and luxury hotels.

In other words, this is the place to go for couples on a honeymoon and those wanting to indulge during their holidays.

There are a line of great restaurants in the area too, although they’re a little pricey, as it’s targeted towards couples and families. But still one of the great places to visit in Bali!

• Try jet skiing and parasailing. We recommend getting a water sport adventure package , so you get to enjoy a bit of everything, including the flyboard, banana boat, and many more.

Ubud is certainly one of the more touristy areas in Bali, and it’s no surprise why, it’s home to some great sights!

As well as many of the most stunning Airbnbs available anywhere on the island.

You may be tempted to skip Ubud because you’re worried it’s going to be overcrowded, but I can say that it’s still worth it. Especially if this is your first time in Bali .

It’s the cultural and artistic heart of the island, and you’ll find many interesting activities to keep you occupied. From fire dance performances, art galleries and museums, to ATV courses, rafting, and more.

Not to mention that it’s home to some iconic attractions, such as: the Monkey Forest, Ubud Art Market, Pura Tirta Empul, Ubud Palace, and Campuhan Ridge Walk.

You can easily spend a few days relaxing here. Ubud is really famous for it’s yoga retreats and natural beauty. Think of the movie “Eat, Pray, Love”.

20. Canggu 

Canggu is like the western corner of Bali. All the locals call it the "white city" or something similar, I can’t remember what she told me. 

But that's not necessarily a bad thing! It’s basically very well-developed and a hub for the digital nomads . 

You can easily find a comfy spot in a cafe or even a co-working space here, so you can get in some work while you’re travelling.

There are lots of amazing cafes and restaurants, selling everything from Asian comfort food and Balinese babi guling to the most modern, elevated western fare . Truly a foodie’s dream!

One restaurant I can recommend is Rice Republic , a good middle ground if you're looking for a local spot with some familiar Asian menus (I'm talking fried rice, chow mein, pad thai, and the like). Not to mention that it's pretty cheap and cater to vegans too.

There are many excellent spas in Canggu , and you’ll find budget ones as well as more high-end options.

Plus, it's home to a few great beaches here for surfing, including the famous Batu Bolong Beach (perfect for beginners) and the nearby Echo Beach.

If you’re into that active lifestyle, it’s easy to find activities to try out — regular gyms, martial arts gyms, bouldering gyms, crossfit gyms, you name it!

Top things to do in Canggu: 

• Take a surfing lesson at Batu Bolong Beach. Check out this awesome class with a local surfing instructor , who can adapt to your experiences whether you’re a first-timer or intermediate surfer.
• Have a drink at the iconic Old Man’s bar on the Canggu beachfront.
• Go cafe-hopping and hunt for your favourite coffee and brunch spot. We recommend the famous Crate Cafe, Blacklist Coffee, and The Avocado Factory.
• Experience the Sunday Market at La Brisa. Every Sunday, local cooks and store owners will set up a pop-up stall at La Brisa beach club. Shop for street food, swimwear, organic skincare, handicraft, and more.

21. West Bali National Park 

The West Bali National Park is famous for its menjangan deer .

Yup, no one knows how or why they are there, but it’s been said that they crossed over from nearby Java island. (Which you can see from this area of Bali - epic views). 

We never visited, as we kind of ran out of time, but it’s another spot we do want to see when we return (which I have no doubts we will one day!). 

Located on the northwestern tip of Bali , it’s basically on the opposite site of the island from the airport. So we do recommend planning at least two days to spend here, so you can make the most of your time.

This national park is a conservation area with forests, mangroves, and savanna.

Other than the menjangan deers, it is home to rare species including the Bali starlings and wild cattle . You might also stumble upon a monkey or two (or three) along the roads here!

Top things to do in West Bali National Park: 

• Go snorkelling around Menjangan Island. This full day boat trip will take you on an epic snorkelling trip above dense coral forests, schools of fish and, if you’re lucky, sea turtles.
• Enjoy a luxury dinner aboard a phinisi boat at Plataran Menjangan . An intimate dining experience with 3 courses included.
• Soak in your own private hot spring at Mimpi Resort. Stay at least 1 night here and enjoy all the facilities of the resort!

22. Nusa Ceningan

So there are 3 areas that aren’t on Bali's main island, but are actually part of Bali and that’s Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.

You can only access Nusa Ceningan via a yellow bridge from Nusa Lembongan. Most people choose to stay on either Lembongan or Penida, as they are the bigger islands.

Ceningan is also very small so you can easily explore everything in under half a day.

We didn’t visit as we were on the island for a day trip, but it’s fairly quiet, with beautiful beaches and a few great beach clubs , so worth staying if you’ve got the time. 

Top things to do in Nusa Ceningan: 

• Explore this tiny island on foot. You can opt for guided tours, like this full-day tour on Klook that includes both Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan. Again, there's the iconic yellow bridge that connects these islands together.
• Visit the Blue Lagoon and try cliff jumping. This is not for the faint of heart! You can jump of cliffs from heights of 4m, 6m, 8m, and 13m. Or, simply enjoy the crystal-clear, turquoise waters of the lagoon.
• Relax at the Secret Beach. Pristine white sands, clear waters, and a relatively quiet spot. This is truly THE place for chilling - not to mention the breathtaking views.

23. Kedungu

Only a 30-minute drive away from the heart of Canggu, Kedungu is a budding neighbourhood that is becoming more popular, especially among surfers.

While many long-termers are renting villas in the area, it is still relatively untouched by the more mainstream tourists.

It’s a small fishing village very close to the famous Tanah Lot temple and still has plenty of unexplored places.

We recommend staying in Kedungu if you want to be close to Canggu while still enjoying a predominantly quiet atmosphere with few crowds .

Ride around your bike and get off the beaten path. The area is also nice for jogging and just breathing in fresh coastal air.

Top things to do in Kedungu: 

• Surf at Kedungu Beach. There are two main surf breaks at Kedungu Beach, one ideal for beginners and the other fitting for more advanced surfers.
• Selfie at The Beach Love photo spot. There are many warungs here with unbelievably cheap prices for bottled drinks, whole coconuts, and snacks.
• See the Holy Snake at Tanah Lot. Enter the temple complex and spend 2-3 hours walking around. There are many photo opportunities and a lot of interesting history to read about.

Best places to stay in Kedungu

24. Karangasem

Karangasem is a regency in Bali where a few popular towns are located, including Amlapura which we’ve talked about earlier.

It’s of course home to some famous landmarks such as Balai Gili Water Palace, Tirta Gangga Water Palace, Besakih Great Temple, Lempuyang Temple, and more.

But there are also plenty of hidden gems that aren’t yet overrun by tourists!

One spot we’d recommend is Bias Tugel Beach, which is relatively untouched and yet boasts an incredible view.

If you love museums, Samsara Living Museum should be on your list. This living museum is a warm, open space where you can explore Hindu beliefs, take a cooking or arak making class, make offerings, or learn Balinese dance, among others.

On the west coasts, you can also go snorkelling and witness the underwater Japanese Ship Wreck Point, remnants of a Japanese patrol ship that was sunk during WWII.

Top things to do in Karangasem:

• Visit Balai Gili water palace and step back in time to the Dutch East Indies era. You can book this one-day tour and also visit Candidasa Village afterward.
• See the Tirta Gangga Water Palace. It’s a picturesque palace with bathing pools, ponds, stepping stones, and fountains. Take a private Bali Instagram Tour to snap the most Insta-worthy photos in the area.
• Enjoy the tranquil Bias Tugel Beach. This small bay includes a 130-meter coastline of white sand and crystal blue waters. It’s usually very peaceful and quiet here, making it perfect for some relaxation.
• Snorkel at the Japanese Ship Wreck Point. We recommend this snorkelling trip , which will take you to various spots from Amed Beach to Lipah Bay.

25. Denpasar

Denpasar is the capital city of Bali, and it probably sounds very familiar because it also happens to be the IATA code of the international airport (DPS).

However, a lot of people overlook Denpasar as a place to visit, even though it can be so worth it for the affordable food and unique city atmosphere.

It’s one of the few places in Bali that are still mostly filled by locals , therefore a perfect place if you want to experience where and how the young people in Bali live!

From Denpasar, you can also visit the nearby Serangan Island, famous for its temples and as the home to many green turtles.

Stop by the Turtle Conservation And Education Center, which was built to eradicate illegal turtle trading . It nurses injured turtles, collects nests from beaches, and buys turtle eggs from locals, thus preventing them from being eaten.

If you love fishing and adventures like that, this is a great place to try spearfishing!

In terms of cultural attractions, Denpasar brims with them!

The Bajra Sandhi Monument is found in front of the Balinese governor's office, which houses a diorama gallery that showcases local history from as far back as 3,000 BC.

There’s also the oldest museum in Bali: Bali Provincial Public Museum. Here, you can find everything from Dutch paintings and artefacts to weapons from Bali’s bronze age, musical instruments, and statues.

Top things to do in Denpasar:

• Visit the Turtle Conservation And Education Center. It’s a conservatory for green turtles which includes breeding hatchlings and releasing them, nursing injured animals, and preventing illegal trade.
• Explore the many temples on Serangan Island. From the famous Sakenan Temple to lesser-known ones like Beji Tirtha Harum Temple.
• Try spearfishing and catch your own dinner. Check out this awesome spearfishing tour at one of Bali’s most famous locations for spearfishing. You can even cook the fish you caught for dinner.

Bali is one of the most peaceful and beautiful places on the planet. Stunning beaches, magical temples, lush greenery, gorgeous waterfalls, and iconic rice fields make up the landscape of Bali. 1. Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot means 'Land in the Sea', and Tanah Lot Temple is a religious and cultural landmark of Bali. Located some 300 meters offshore, it offers incredible tropical offshore views, especially at sunset.

As one of seven "sea temples" around the Balinese coast, Tanah Lot Temple was built to worship Bhatara Segara or 'the sea god'.

The best time to visit Tanah Lot is during its Odalan ("anniversary" of building) festival (lasting for 3 days, sometimes longer), which is celebrated every 210 days. Contact us for dates. During the Odalan, you can expect a traditional ceremony with rows of Balinese women gracefully carrying offerings on their heads to pray at the temple of Tanah Lot.

2. Ubud Monkey Forest

Ubud Monkey Forest also known as Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, is only about a 10-minute walk from the upland tourist hub of Ubud.

There are over 700 gray long-tailed macaques , and it is a good place for animal lovers or photographers. Besides the monkeys, you can have a relaxing walk through a leafy nutmeg forest as well as visit several ancient temples under dense foliage.

Make sure you follow the guidelines that can be read at the entrance: secure your belongings inside pockets and bags and avoid direct eye contact with the monkeys (and smiling). Avoid wearing any loose jewelry or items (that the monkeys may grab/steal).

3. Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is another Balinese Hindu sea temple located 4 km (2½ miles) southeast of Uluwatu, 16 km (10 miles) south of the Kuta Beach.

It is famous for being on the edge of a 70-meter-high (230-foot-high) cliff or rock (watu) projecting into the sea. You can have a spectacular outlook over the waves of the Indian Ocean, which is especially splendid at sunset.

A Kecak dance (a telling of the Ramayana ) is performed every 6 p.m. by many local men in loincloths outside Uluwatu Temple on the cliffside. The performance is outdoors, so you can enjoy the show and the beautiful sunset together.

4. Tirta Empul Temple

Tirta Empul Temple is a Hindu Balinese water temple, famous for its holy spring water . There is a spring that produces fresh water constantly and many Balinese Hindus go for ritual purification using ritual bathing practices.

If you would like to join the locals in the cleansing ritual, make sure you respect the customs: you need to enter the water fully clothed, wearing a sarong and sash. Usually, it is very busy, especially approaching noon till evening, so it is better to go in the early morning.

5. The Tegalalang Rice Terraces

The Tegalalang Rice Terraces are a part of the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province UNESCO World Heritage site. It is famous for its scenic terraced layout and the traditional Balinese subak irrigation system .

The rice terraces are greenest or most colorful and photogenic in March/April and September/October before the biannual harvests. The best times of day to visit the Tegalalang Rice Terraces are early in the morning or late afternoon for sunrise or sunset.

6. Ubud Art Market

Located in the center of Ubud itself, Ubud Art Market is a strategic shopping place for Balinese handicrafts and souvenirs.

You can find many traditional, unique, and authentic products that represent the island of Bali in Ubud Art Market, for example, silk scarves, lightweight shirts, statues, kites, handmade woven bags, baskets or hats and many other hand-crafted goods. Even if you don't buy anything, viewing the various items on display from one stall to another is a highlight of visiting.

The market is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and bargaining is expected and encouraged as part of the fun of shopping in Ubud Art Market.

7. Mount Batur

Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active volcano located near Bangli in central Bali, 1½ hours north of Ubud. A sunrise trek to Gunung Batur Volcano crater is the most popular and epic hiking experience on Bali. You can catch amazing views of the sunrise from the top of the mountain, usually in a sea of orange clouds.

Usually hiking up Gunung Batur takes about 2 hours. If you're staying in Ubud, in order to catch the sunrise, you may need to depart at 2 a.m. 

8. Ubud Royal Palace

Ubud Royal Palace is the palace of the Ubud royal family, and it is a prominent landmark in Ubud, known for being a cultural repository of arts, dance, and literature. It offers interesting and unique things to explore like Balinese architecture and charming gardens.

Open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., every visitor is welcome to enter Ubud Palace for free during opening hours. Every evening at about 7:30, there are dance performances outside. Tickets to these performances are usually available in the afternoon at the palace.

9. Jimbaran Bay

Jimbaran Bay is fringed by one of the best beaches in Bali and is well known for its popular seafood restaurants , pristine beaches, and unique shopping destinations.

It is recommended to arrive at around 5 p.m., then take a seat in one of the restaurants located on the beach, order food and drink, and enjoy the romantic sunset while waiting for your fresh seafood. The sunsets in Jimbaran are very beautiful . After the sunset, there are live entertainments such as a mariachi band (guitarists, violinists, and trumpeters) or traditional dances.

10. Kuta Beach

Kuta Beach is not just sand and sea. It is also a bustling commercial and social hub, for both international tourists as well as local Balinese people. Located on the southwestern coast, Kuta is good for sunsets, surfing, and sunbathing.

In order to get a spot on the sand, it is better to get there earlier. For surfing, the dry season (April–September) generally enjoys the most conducive waves.

11. Seminyak

Seminyak is an 8-kilometer (5-mile) beach that stretches north from Kuta and Legian. Not only can you enjoy the beach, but also Seminyak is famous for shopping and the best beach restaurants, bars, and cafés.

Many people stay around Seminyak for its nightlife, flamboyant designers, and fabulous shopping. Some nice boutiques are Biasa, Magali Pascal, and Bamboo Blonde for your reference.

12. Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

Nominated for designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces comprise over 6 square kilometers (2 square miles) of hillside rice fields and it is the only place in the world that has three annual rice harvests (on rice terraces).

It offers beautiful panoramas of contoured rice terraces without hordes of people crowding around, because it is located further away from Ubud, needing about 1½ hours' driving. The best time to visit Jatiluwih Rice Terraces is in the dry season, when you will have the best chance to see clear blue skies and views of the mountains and volcanoes.

13. Nusa Dua Beach

Located on Bali's southern peninsula, Nusa Dua is the capital of Bali Province and the beach is a gated resort area, so you can escape from Bali's urban buzz there. Just enjoy sunbathing on the beach, and listen to the gentle slosh of surf on silky white sands.

If you would like to be more active, Nusa Dua has good conditions for leisurely water sports like swimming, snorkeling, and surfing.

14. Sekumpul Waterfall

Sekumpul Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bali with a collection of seven waterfalls — the centerpiece of a lush, green, bamboo-forested valley. Located in the northern mountains of Bali, it takes around a 2½-hour drive to get there from the main tourist hubs of Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, and Ubud.

To access the waterfall, you need to trek about 2 hours past rice terraces and local villages rimmed with rambutan and durian trees and through a dense tropical jungle.

15. Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is a small island off the coast of Bali and the most popular of the three Nusa islands (Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, and Nusa Penida). It is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) offshore from Sanur and easily accessible by speedboat. It is an excellent choice for an island-hopping day trip.

Bali has so much to offer you’re spoilt for choice. There are so many temples , beaches, waterfalls, wildlife, theme parks, markets, swings , volcanic mountains, rice terraces and nearby islands to explore you’ll need a plan to tick some of them off your Bali Bucket List. Tanah Lot Temple is a must-visit for anyone holidaying in Bali. Tanah Lot, which means “Land in the Sea” in Balinese, is the most visited tourist attraction in Bali for a reason. It really is one of the most iconic images of Bali and makes for a spectacular day tour. The surrounding car park, markets and parks make it quite a large area, with the main attraction being a path leading down to the rocks where you can walk out to the temple itself during low tide. When the tide is coming in the local guides sometimes have to convince swathes of tourists to get off the rocks, which can be covered by water quite quickly. Along the way, there is a large market where some of the best souvenir shopping and deals can be had on the island. Surprisingly, perhaps because of the competition and the sheer number of tourists visiting, the prices can be much better than other markets in the tourist enclaves of Kuta, Seminyak and Nusa Dua, so I recommend taking the time to go shopping instead of rushing through the complex. As you approach the gates leading to the temple, I recommend taking a right turn around the parks surrounding the oceanfront to get a look at Tanah Lot from a higher perspective. From there you can also get a decent view of the rocks and check the tide before venturing down. The incoming tide can catch unwary visitors on the rocks between the land and the temple. Looking at the temple from the land there is a pathway up to the left which provides spectacular views of the temple, especially at sunset. There are around a dozen cafes with outside seating overlooking the temple, with the best views towards the top. I recommend doing the right side first, then down to the rocks, tide permitting, before going up the pathway for another view of Tanah Lot, which is stunning at sunset.

Ubud Monkey Forest

Ubud Monkey Forest is extremely popular because, well monkeys are just so damn cute. They have also earned a well-deserved reputation for being masterful thieves. It’s best to leave sunglasses, handbags and anything you don’t want to part with inside the tour vehicle, as the monkeys have a well-earned reputation for stealing pretty much anything they can get their hands on. The Ubud Monkey Forest is very accessible and is an easy walk through the sanctuary grounds over well-paved walkways. It is visited by more than 10,000 tourists a month, making it one of the most popular attractions in Bali.

Ubud Art Market

Located in the heart of Ubud, this double-storey warren of stalls is full of wood carvings, batik shirts, sarongs, and all manner of other souvenirs aimed specifically at tourists. The merchants here haggle with tourists for a living and think nothing of asking for ten times the going price, so try to establish a baseline before you go in to buy. Most of the merchants downstairs will lose interest if you try to get a reasonable price. It is better to try the shops upstairs where you will find the same products often for sale at lower prices.

Tegalalang Rice Terraces

The Tegalalang Rice Terraces is one of the most accessible and beautiful rice terraces in Bali. Lining the main road in the small village of Tegalalang are a number of hillside cafes where you can relax, try the local Luwak coffee and get some Instagram-worthy photos.

If you’re feeling physically fit and adventurous you can descend the steep incline and walk up through the valley to the other side. There are several well-trodden paths around the terraces although the going can be tough.

Trekking down the very steep slopes and through the rice terraces to get there is half the adventure. Be careful though, as when it’s raining the slopes are very slippery and shouldn’t be attempted unless you are physically fit with decent footwear. The wet slopes are responsible for a lot of sprained ankles.

Bali Safari & Marine Park

I’m not usually a fan of animal parks, but if you are going to visit one while in Bali I recommend  Bali Safari & Marine Park . They put some serious effort and dollars into wildlife conservation in Indonesia and is home to over 1,000 animals across 100 species. They have some unique experiences, including night-time safaris and a number of programmes designed specifically for children.

Handarah Golf Course Gates

Stone gates are an important architectural tradition in Balinese culture. You will see them literally everywhere, from entrance ways to villages, temples and places of cultural significance.

At the entrance to Handarah Golf Course are the famous Handarah Gates. This is a photographer’s dream location with the lush mountains making a stunning backdrop behind the huge stone gates that are an excellent example of Balinese architecture.

Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegenungan is the largest waterfall by volume and the closest to the tourist enclaves in the south of the island, including Seminyak, Legian, Kuta and Sanur.

To get to Tegenungan Waterfall, drive from Denpasar to the Tegenungan Kemenuh village, in Gianyar. The drive is just 16 km or about 30 minutes. You need to walk around 15 mins down a series of steps to get to the river and then walk along the river bank to the foot of the falls.

Be warned, when the river is flowing hard after rainfall the current is exceptionally strong, so make sure you only cross the river to climb the falls from the opposite bank if you really know what you’re doing.

Waterbom Theme Park

Bali’s biggest water theme park in Bali with rides for all ages  Waterbom  is a great place if you are travelling with children of all ages. There are several food outlets as well as a swim-up bar for the grown-ups.

The area of north-eastern Bali at the Mount Batur caldera, commonly known as Kintamani. Kintamani, Batur and Penelokan villages sit on the rim of the huge Batur caldera about 1,500m above sea level and offer dramatic views of the active volcano and Lake Batur.

The Balinese of this area are warm and friendly, and also very traditional, so it’s appreciated if respect is paid by not walking on their farmlands, entering their temples (unless you wish to pray) and it’s advisable that women cover their legs to the knees.

Because it’s high in the mountains, the temperature can be up to 15 degrees cooler than down on the coast, and even more so at night. Combined with the often cloudy weather makes a sweater or jacket advisable during the day (and more so at night).

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

An incredibly beautiful area of verdant terraced rice paddies located in the shadow of Mount Batukaru. Running from the mountains to the coast, Jatiluwih Green Land as it is commonly known was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007. Jati means ‘really’ and Luwih means ‘special’, and it’s easy to see why. There are a number of cafes with stunning views in the area, making it an excellent place to stop for a while.

Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is, according to the Bali Tourism Board the 2nd most visited attraction after Tanah Lot, with over 1.7 million visitors in 2015. Apart from the extensive and spectacular temple complex situated on a cliff 70m above the sea, it is also known for the Balinese Kecak and fire dance performance.

Ulun Danu Beratan

The Floating Temple, Pura Ulan Danu Beratan  in Balinese, is one of the iconic images of Bali. The temple sits on the western shore of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul, and its position in the lake can give the illusion of floating on the water. It takes a full day to get there as the temple is located around 57 km from Seminyak, making it ideal to combine with other attractions along the way.

I have a tour specifically for Danu Beratan , but because it’s on the way to several of Bali’s most spectacular waterfalls, it’s also included in several other tours, including the Gitgit and Aling-Aling Waterfall tours.

Bedugul Market (Pasar Candi Kuning)

The Candi Kuning Market referred to as ‘Pasar Bedugul’ by the locals is a great place to stop and stock up on snacks and drinks during a tour. It’s one of the main markets in the area for flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables – mangosteen, bananas, tamarillos, tangerines and strawberries – and an excellent place to buy a wide selection of spices.

Because of its location a few minutes from Pura Ulun Danu Beratan there are a large number of souvenir shops with a huge range of handicrafts.

A little way past Danu Beretan is Bedugul Market, which specialises in herbs, spices and vegetables grown in the highlands around Lake Beratan. I recommend making this a quick stop because it’s a long way back south and the traffic can get fierce later in the day when the tour buses leave Danu Beratan.

Lempuyang Temple

While Lempuyang is spectacular, there are so many photoshopped images on Instagram it can be a disappointment for many people. It’s a spectacular setting, with a steep climb up several stone stairways to get to the top of the temple complex. In my opinion, most tourists are missing the point of trying to get the perfect shot looking back through the temple gates back toward Mount Agung (the active volcano that disrupted flights in 2018).

The reality is Mount Agung can only be seen clearly for a few short hours after dawn before the clouds set in. And those mirror-like Instagram photos that make it look like a lake are completely fake. 

That being said, if you are in Bali for longer than two weeks I highly recommend the trip to Lempuyang as the temple complex is inspiring for the walk up to the main stone staircase looking up towards the gates.

It’s best visited during an East Bali Day Tour taking in the water palace further down the valley as getting there will take several hours. However, if you are keen enough to wake up around 4 am I recommend the Lempuyang Sunrise Tour . Pura Tirta Empul

Pura Tirta Empul is a Hindu Balinese water temple dating back to the 10th century and is one of the holiest in Bali, located near the town of Tampaksiring, around a half-hour drive (15 km) north of Ubud. The temple pond has a spring which gushes fresh water regularly, which Balinese Hindus consider to be holy – Tirta Empul means Holy Spring in Balinese.

You can bathe in the springs alongside locals if you observe a few simple courtesies and protocols. Start from the left, and if there is someone praying alongside to the right, simply join in the queue (or start one) and be patient.

Work your way right until you get to the end of the first pool, and hop up and across into the second one. It’s an extraordinary experience, and one I highly recommend with two provisos.

One, there was an outbreak of e.coli in 2017 due to contaminated water leaking into the water table upstream from the springs in. The water has been cleaned up since then, but if another outbreak happens I’ll send word through the email newsletter, which you will want to sign up for.

Two, the facilities for changing beforehand and washing afterwards are rudimentary at best, and very unhygienic at worst. You are best off getting changed into your swimsuit in your car beforehand and having a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards.

Regardless of the poor changing facilities I highly recommend bathing in the temple. It’s a unique and enlightening experience and well worth the effort to plan ahead.

Pura Tirta Empul is only 1.3 km from  Gunung Kawi , so it makes sense to visit them both on the same trip or a day tour.

The Elephant Cave as it’s known – Goa Gajah in Balinese – is an ancient temple on the outskirts of Ubud. While the steps down to the temple complex are fairly steep, it’s only a 5-minute walk and not difficult for average fitness levels.

The Elephant Cave temple is located 5 km from Ubud, 31 km from Seminyak and 58 km from Nusa Dua.

Gunung Kawi

Gunung Kawi Temple is an 11th-century temple complex that sits on either side of the Pakerisan river. It comprises 10 rock-cut shrines (candi in Balinese) that are carved into 7-metre-high sheltered niches of the sheer cliff face.

These funeral monuments are thought to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens. The temple overlooks the Pakerisan River, which also flows past Pura Tirta Empul, a kilometre to the north.

Sekumpul Waterfall

One of the most inspiring natural wonders in Bali, Sekumpul Waterfall isn’t easy to get to, but it is definitely worth the trip.

Located 66 km north of Ubud and 76 km from Seminyak it will take the best part of a day to drive (or ride) out there and back. At the carpark, there are a number of local guides very keen for you to employ their services, and to be honest, their assistance for this particular hike can be a big help as they do know a couple of hidden gems nearby. From the carpark to the falls is around a 45-minute hike, and due to its popularity, the track is quite well marked.

It’s busiest between midday and 2 pm, so if you’re making it a stop on a day tour I advise going straight there when the traffic is lightest and before the crowds arrive. The waterfall flows year-round, but like all the waterfalls in Bali, things get pretty intense during the wet months from December through to March.

Make sure you have decent walking shoes because the track is quite steep in places and the rocks can be very slippery. Take your time, you do not want to sprain an ankle this far away from medical services.

That being said, Sekumpul falls are without doubt one of my top 5 destinations in Bali. They are quite magical, and the hike through the jungle is an adventure in itself. If you want to visit other waterfalls in this region I also recommend Aling-Aling and Gitgit .

Besakih Temple

Besakih Temple (also known as the Mother Temple) is the largest and most holy of all Hindu temples in Bali. Located in the village of the same name on the slopes of Mount Agung, the temple complex is quite far from the tourist areas, 66km from Seminyak and around 2-2.5 hours depending on traffic.

Besakih Temple is more impressive, in my opinion than Lempuyang Temple, which is a huge deal on Instagram, thanks to the fake reflective-pool photos taken using a mirror on the camera lens, creating a false illusion of what the temple actually looks like.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana

The  Garuda Wisnu Kencana  statue is the symbol of God Vishnu riding the great Garuda as his trusted companion. The statue is one of the world’s largest at a height of 75m for the statue itself, and 120m if you include the pedestal it stands on. That’s 30m taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York, but what makes Garuda Wisnu Kencana truly exceptional is the sheer size – it has a 64m wingspan and can be clearly seen from several kilometres up the coastline.

The statue was built in sections on the island of Java and is made from layers of wax, fibreglass, copper and brass, then cut up and driven by truck to Bali for final installation.

It has been 25 years since construction started and cost an estimated USD$100 million. The monument was completed on 31 July 2018 and inaugurated by Indonesian President Joko Widodo on 22 September 2018 and is already attracting over 3,000 visitors a day.

Real Bali Swing

The most popular swing park is Real Bali Swing, located 15 km from Ubud. They have 15 different single swings to try, along with three tandem swings so you can be scared witless alongside your loved one.

There are also 4 large stones to pose on (yes, posing on stones is a thing). They also have 6 nests to pose in. And yes, posing in nests is a thing too. They are quite artistic, made from branches and fauna but mostly have a lined interior for comfort.

Bali Swing operates a free shuttle operating from Ubud, but make sure the entry fee you are paying is confirmed upfront. They also sell package tours which include other activities like rafting, elephant rides and  chasing waterfalls , but these tend to be quite expensive compared to hiring your own driver and making your own custom itinerary.

Bali Bird Park

An open-air bird park. Great to for kids and families, they have a huge number of Indonesian bird species. Well worth the visit.

Amed is a sleepy coastal strip of fishing villages in East Bali that’s trying to maintain it’s traditional values while tourism inevitably continues to grow.

It’s a beautiful part of Bali and the sunsets on the point overlooking Amed village with Mount Agung in the background are spectacular. The area is known for being a bit of a mecca for free and scuba diving.

There are some really interesting things to do around Amed, but perhaps one of the most surprising is to go snorkelling off a small stony beach next to a fishing village where a small Japanese submarine was sunk during the Second World War and lies only 20m off the shore.

It’s a long drive to get there, and the road from the east side of Bali is often quite busy with heavy trucks transporting goods and construction materials to the main centres, so extra care needs to be taken as overtaking on the wrong side of the road appears to be quite an acceptable driving manoeuvre. 

Making Amed part of a 3 or 4-day tour starting at Seminyak, going through Ubud, on to Lovina and then to Amed is an excellent road trip.

Lovina is in the very north of Bali. It’s a small town, bigger than a village but smaller than Denpasar, known for its black sand beaches, coral reefs and dolphin tours. Lovina is 73 km from Ubud and 85km from Seminyak.

Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is one of the most accessible outer islands from Bali, one of three islands that make up the Nusa Penida chain.

Gili Islands

The Gili Islands are a group of three very small individual islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, each with their own character and varying degrees of atmosphere, from party to chill mode.

The Gili Islands are located off the coast of Lombok Island. Characterized by sandy beaches fringed with palm trees, they’re known for their coral reefs just offshore. On the smallest island of Gili Meno, sea turtles swim at Turtle Point. At Gili Trawangan, the largest island, a sunken ship sits at Wreck Point near Mentigi Beach.

Borneo over Bali? Here are 5 'destination dupes' for travelers who want unique getaways without the crowds

Millennial and Gen Z travelers are over tourist traps.

Intrepid Travel's President of the Americas, Matt Berna, told Business Insider that his company has seen a shift away from popular destinations among tourists between 18- and 35- years old. Intrepid Travel is a small group travel company.

According to Berna, young travelers aren't bogged down by FOMO — or the "fear of missing out" — that influenced older generations. Instead, they want to set the tone.

"They want to be a trendsetter, going to the next cool place," he said.

That's why more young folks are booking so-called " destination dupes ," alternative vacation spots that are more affordable and less crowded than the well-known locations.

Intrepid Travel compiled a list of destination dupes travelers should consider this year.

Visit Corsica instead of Positano.

According to Intrepid Travel, the Mediterranean island of Corsica is a good alternative to Positano, a cliffside village on the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

"Unlike the bustling and tourist-heavy atmosphere of Positano, Corsica offers a more tranquil and peaceful environment, allowing travelers to unwind and immerse themselves in the island's serene and calming ambiance," the company said.

Japan's tourism industry is booming , with a record-breaking 3.1 million visitors this March.

Seoul is a great destination for travelers who want to avoid overcrowded attractions but still explore an Asian megacity like Tokyo.

The digital nomad life in Bali has become more appealing over the years with the island a thriving hub for those seeking a balance between work and adventure.

Now, those Aussies who plan on staying in the hotspot long-term can benefit from a new transitional visa, also known as a bridging visa.

It allows foreigners to extend their trip another 60 days with ease and without fuss.

However, the visa, which falls under the new Transitional Residence Permit policy, is only applicable to foreigners who already reside in the country.

Indonesia’s director general of immigration, Silmy Karim, said it will help make the transition from one visa to another easier – without having to leave the country.

It basically acts as a ‘bridge’ between an old residence permit and a new residence permit.

Those who have Visit Stay Permits, Limited Stay Permits and Permanent Stay Permits that cannot be extended, can now obtain the new residence permit without needing to leave the county.

“In this way, it is possible for foreign citizens holding a Visit Stay Permit to submit it via visa.immigration.go.id to obtain a Limited Stay Permit without having to leave Indonesian territory,” Mr Karim said in a statement, as reported by The Bali Sun .

“With a Transitional Stay Permit, foreigners can save time, energy, and accommodation costs that would otherwise be incurred if foreigners had to leave Indonesian territory in order to submit an application and wait for approval for a new visa.”

It’s a big win for long-stay foreigners across Indonesia, particularly in the hotspot of Bali where in 2023 alone, 5.2 million people visited the popular island.

Data from the Bali Province Tourism Office, revealed that the five countries with the most amount of visitors to Bali are Australia with 1,201,652 people in 2023, followed by India with 394,428 people. In third is China with 253,255 tourists heading to Bali.

According to The Bali Sun, Mr Karim said he hopes the new policy will support more efficient and comfortable stays for foreigners while in Indonesia, as well as increase international trust in Indonesian immigration procedures.

Previously, those who had a Transitional Stay Permit would cop fines for overstaying their visit.

However, this wont be the case if their Transitional Stay Permit application is approved after the validity period of the previous stay permit expires.

It’s also the case if they have made the application at least three days before the original visa expires, according to The Bali Sun.

Tourists who overstay their visas can face fines of up to IDR 1,000,000 per day ($100), deportation and detainment.
