How to Get to the Baltimore Cruise Port Without a Car (Port Transportation)

Flying into a Baltimore or Washington D.C. airport for your cruise? Or maybe you simply don’t want to deal with the headache and expense of dealing with parking your car? Or perhaps you are taking the train into the area and need to know how to get to the port?

No matter the reason, if you’re needing transportation from anywhere in the area to your cruise ship, then we have you covered.

Baltimore Harbor

The good news is that you have a number of options in getting to the port. And depending on your budget, they run from relatively cheap to super stylish (and more expensive).

Below, we take you through all the options on getting to the Baltimore cruise port, so you can find the right mode of transportation for your situation.

Uber/Lyft (Recommended)

As for a mix of cost and convenience, we think rideshare services win hands-down in getting from anywhere in the area to the port. From your phone you can call a ride on demand, no matter where you are.

As well, rates are extremely affordable. When you mix a ride any time you want with a cheap price (remember, up to four people can ride with no increase in charges), we think taking an Uber or Lyft to the ship makes the most sense for most people.

Here are some example estimated rates you would pay for getting to the terminal. Note that that taxi rates include a 15% customary tip. Uber and Lyft make tipping optional.

For more on using rideshare services to the cruise port, see our write-up here for full details.

If you don’t want to use rideshare services like Uber/Lyft, you can always take a cab from the airport or anywhere else around town. Expect the rates to be a little more expensive, but still reasonable and convenient for getting to the port.

We’ve listed the estimated taxi fare from popular areas to the Port of Baltimore in the table above.

Keep in mind that if you are coming directly from an area airport, you shouldn’t have to wait long to catch a taxi. If you are at a hotel or some other location in the area, you’ll want to call a cab in advance to give it time to come reach you before.

Cruise Shuttles

Flying into the Baltimore airport (BWI) to go to the cruise port? In the past, both Royal Caribbean and Carnival offered shuttles from the airport to the cruise port. You can call to the cruise line to see if it’s an option for your cruise.

For a couple of reasons, we usually suggest going with another option than a cruise shuttle transfer, even if available. First, transfers are expensive.

For example, Carnival recently charged $25.99 per person, each way for their shuttle from BWI to the cruise port. So a family of four would pay $25.99 each ($104) just to get from the airport to the cruise port. Other options like Uber and taxis usually price based on the car, not the number of occupants, making it less expensive.

Second, cruise transfers are extremely limited. They typically run only from the airport to the terminal, and only on the day of sailing. So if you come in early or are staying at a hotel in the area, then the cruise line transfer isn’t a viable option.

If you decide anyway that you would prefer a cruise line transfer, simply contact your cruise company directly to book a reservation.

Independent Shuttles/Car Services

If you are traveling with a larger group or want to ride to your cruise in style, then your best bet is likely to look for an independent shuttle van or private car service. These providers can offer private service to the port, often for less per person than a taxi or other service, assuming you have five or more passengers. They can also give you a ride in an upscale car or even a limousine.

To be frank, the number of shuttles and car services in the area is extremely high. That means we can’t list them all here. Instead, we’ve rounded up a sample list of area companies to give you a good start to go from.

The prices quoted by these companies can vary widely depending on what sort of service you need and exactly where you are coming from. However, as a general rule expect it to be a better value the larger a group you need to transport. Be sure to shop around before selecting a service as it can save you considerable money.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the prices you are quoted won’t include gratuity, which can add on another 15-20% to your fare.

Arriving via Penn Station

If you are headed to Baltimore via train, the odds are likely that you will arrive via Baltimore Penn Station — the primary station in the city. Penn Station is only about four miles from the cruise terminal, or a 15-minute car ride.

We recommend taking either Uber/Lyft or a taxi from the train station to the port, once you arrive. Rides will cost about $15-20. Public transit to the port isn’t convenient given the location and the fact that you’ll be carrying your luggage.

Public Transportation

As mentioned above, we highly recommend taking a car over using public transit to the cruise terminal. The problem is that getting to the terminal typically involves one or more transfers, plus at least a 10-minute walk from the closest bus stop to the cruise terminal. That means what can be a 15-minute car ride turns into a longer commute.

Our suggestion? Just pay a few bucks for a cab or car, and start your trip off that much easier!

Help getting from DCA to Baltimore cruise port

We fly into DCA on Wednesday (Washington, DC), and need to be at the Baltimore cruise port on Thursday. Obviously a hotel is needed, perferably close to the port (with a free shuttle from hotel to port).

What is the easiest, most cost effective way to do this with 2 adults, 3 kids? The train seems confusing but perhaps do-able?

If you indeed take the train from Washington's Union Station to Baltimore, consider taking the MARC trains. MARC is the Maryland Rail Corporation and it operates commuter trains between the two cities on two separate lines:

Penn Line [which uses the old Pennsylvania Railroad/Amtrak rails] and ends at Pennsylvania Station in Baltimore; and the Camden Line [which uses old B&O Railroad rails] and ends at Camden Yards downtown.

It is a much shorter and less expensive cab ride from Camden Yards to the CruiseMaryland pier than from Penn Station.

*IF* you can handle all of your luggage, the train is a convenient way to get between DC and Baltimore. There is a free shuttle at the airport to the Metro(subway) stop.

From there, take a yellow line train inbound to the Gallery Place station. Once there, go up one level and take a Red line train towards Glenmont. Two stops later you ill be at Union Station; the Marc and Amtrak station.

Most of the hotels that have free shuttles to the cruise port are actually located near BWI airport. There is a train station adjacent to BWI (called BWI airport rail station) I would call some of those hotels(e.g.; hampton Inn) to see if any of them will pick you up directly from the train station; if not it's not a BIG deal; there is a free shuttle bus from the train station to the airport.

jcl offers a good idea here. If you can handle taking the Metro to Union Station you could take a Amtrak/MARC trian to BWI Rail Station and stay at a BWI Hotel District location, there are many hotels from all the major hotel chains from economy (Red Roof Inn) to luxury (Hilton or Marriott) and everything in between. Most of the BWI hotels offer a free shuttle to the cruise port and cabs are abundant. Just check the different hotel websites or an online travel site to compare hotels. Other wise the other option is to stay near the Inner Harbor for a night and take a cab to the port. Inner Harbor hotels are expensive though. One other option would be to stay near Reagan National airport and use the Super Shuttle van service to get to the port. good luck! :D

Easiest and most cost-effective don't necessarily go together, but in the case of DCA to Baltimore, a fair distance (too bad you can't fly into BWI), I think the choices are two: rent a car at DCA and drive (drop the car off at BWI or downtown Baltimore, depending on where you stay).

From most terminals at DCA you just need to cross a walkway to the Metro station. You may want to use a shuttle if you land at Terminal A, though you could walk. From Terminals B or C, the signs to the Metro station are clear and the walk is short.

I lived near DC for 9 years and regularly used Metro Rail (subway), including with luggage (though never lots of bags). As noted, Metro is easy to use to get to Union Station, though there's no extra room for baggage, and you do need to change trains to get to Union Station, which is on the Red Line (change at Gallery Place if you take a Yellow Line train from DCA, or change at Metro Center if you take a Blue Line train). In late afternoon/early evening, the trains can be packed and stations hectic. There are elevators in most Metro stations, though they don't always work. With kids, and bags, I might be tempted to take a taxi to Union Station and train from there. MARC trains cost less than do Amtrak trains, but may be more crowded, especially at rush hour, and make more stops. MARC schedules and fares are at http://mta.maryland.gov/services/marc/; Amtrak at http://www.amtrak.com.

I do agree about staying in Baltimore or at BWI and not in Washington. I wouldn't worry too much about finding a free shuttle and would concentrate on price and amenities. We've used Hotwire and Priceline to get hotels near BWI and have done well. We've stayed in downtown Baltimore just once, at the Sheraon City Center.

Because of the number of people and bags involved, I'd vote for driving IF you are not dealing with rush hours, especially in the Washington area (and if you stay at BWI, you won't face much of Baltimore's rush hours). But I've taken the train several times and like it, especially during peak traffic hours.

p.s. What time do you arrive on Wednesday? If you are landing in late afternoon/early evening (i.e., rush hour) AND your cruise departs Balitmore in late afternoon Thursday, staying around DCA might be a good idea, since you could depart Thursday a.m. after the peak traffic times, whehter you're going by train or car. While I think I've found more bargains at hotels around BWI than around DCA, it could conceivably work out best for you. And you could have dinner in Washington (though there are lots of restaurants in Arlington and Alexandria).

Please be aware that MARC and Metro are primarily commuter transportation, and MARC has commuter-type schedules. You'll need to make sure the transporation schedules match yours. You'll likely be sharing space with people trying to get to/from work who might not have a lot of patience, and it can get crowded during the rush hours. MARC trains are two story trains, and you might find yourself lugging suitcases up steps. I wouldn't hesitate to do it if I was travelling alone, but I wouldn't want to wrangle an entire family.

Absolute cheapest is to take Metro to the Greenbelt Station, and take the No. B30 Metrobus to BWI airport, where you can get a hotel shuttle to pick you up or take a taxi. It's a short well-marked walk from the bus stops to the shuttle/taxi stops.

With that many children and that much baggage, I'd at least consider/price out a van service from DCA to your hotel in Baltimore (and I do think you should stay in Baltimore). TheAirportShuttle dot com sometimes offers specials. Next to no aggravation involved.

bus man

I would add my vote to staying in the Baltimore area, if for no other reason than so you can relax and take your time getting ready on the morning of your cruise, rather than worry about making the trek up from Washington. Don't be intimidated by descriptions of the process; it's really pretty easy, and you can always ask the station attendant or other passengers for help if you get confused. Tourists are hardly a novelty here, so we're used to answering questions and giving directions. :)

If you use the MARC train, note that it is the Penn Line that serves the BWI Airport. Also note that these trains are very crowded during rush hour periods (departing Union Station in Washington roughly between 3:30 p.m. through 6:00 p.m.) Same is true of the Metro system. If you can travel outside of these times, you'll find it to be a much nicer option.

I would argue against using Amtrak. This is nothing at all against Amtrak, as it's actually a very pleasant means of transportation in the Northeast. But it's much more expensive than MARC, and not appreciably faster for the relatively short distance between Washington and Baltimore. Also, reservations are required, meaning you're tied down to a specific train, which could be an issue if you're trying to catch the train on the same day as your arrival at DCA. MARC trains are strictly first-come, first-served.

Another poster mentioned the B30 Metrobus. While it is true that this is the absolute cheapest way to do it, and it's not at all difficult to do, you should note that there are NO bathroom facilities on either the Metro or the bus. So if your kids are young, this could be an issue. MARC trains do have bathrooms on-board.

Good luck, and have a great cruise!

It's a city type transit bus with no under the bus luggage compartment but only a small rack inside the bus near the front door for luggage

I live in Maryland just to the north of DC. With children and bags, I would rent a car. If you come this way again for a cruise, I would fly into Baltimore instead of DC. Where are you coming from? It is about a 45 minute drive to Baltimore depending on traffic. It is cheaper to stay in Baltimore. Stay at a hotel near the airport because they have shuttles to the port which is close. If you have any questions, please let me know.

I was suggesting considering Amtrak only if going during rush hour, since the trains will in general be less crowded than those of MARC, and there is a little bit more room for luggage. You do not need to reserve most trains in advance. You can buy tickets at Union Station.

But I sill think driving is the best option, given the size of the group, and the necessity to get from DCA with bags and, if taking train, needing to take two different Metro trains from DCA to Union Station (and, if staying at a BWI hotel, needing to take a shuttle bus from the BWI train station to the airport terminal, and then a hotel shuttle bus to the hotel).

We fly into DCA on Wednesday (Washington, DC), and need to be at the Baltimore cruise port on Thursday. Get a shuttle from DCA to BWI area hotel that offers free shuttle service to the port would be my suggestion

Bowie MeMe

I live in Bowie half way between Washington, DC and Baltimore. I have two suggestions to look into.

1. Does the cruiseline offer a transfer from DCA to the port? This might be an option to take a hotel near DCA and spend Thurs. and Friday morning touring spots in DC (easy on the metro with no bags) and return to hotel to go by shuttle to catch transfer bus to port.

2. Go directly by "shuttle Blue Van or others" to Baltimore inner harbor hotel with free transport to port. The inner harbor district has wonderful things to do with kids including the Md. Science Museum (hands on and very good), a great "Discovery Zone" hands on museum, hard rock cafe, harbor boat tours, ship museum, baseball stadium, Babe Ruth birthplace etc. You would have more than enough to pleasantly spend 24 hours.

the drive to the port is not difficult and the directions are on the port of Maryland home page. Baltimore or Washington either place is just great.

If you want a third option go to Annapolis with the naval academy, great little water boat tours, historical walking tours/night ghost tours, and the Maryland capital. Good seafood as has Baltimore.

  • 2 months later...

Too late to be of help for the original poster but I wanted to post in case somebody else searches.

Always check the various prices. DCA to Greenbelt via metro rail and then the bus is almost $11 a person one way depending on time of day. I'm looking into taking a Greyhound bus from Union Station for $16 round trip (not counting price to Union Station) and that would be a more enjoyable trip than the previous option and roughly the same price. It also gets you closer to the port, has bathrooms, wifi, outlets, and better luggage storage options. And I'm guaranteed to have a seat, unlike on the metro bus.

MARC is $7 one way from Union Station.

Amtrak is $22 round trip and a guaranteed place to sit and better luggage options.

These are all relatively close in price but can fluctuate in price depending on when you need them. I'd go with what was easiest for your family. We will probably do the Greyhound and possibly Amtrak. It depends on what we decide to do when we go and which station is closer.

Hope they didn't get stuck on the inner/outer loop of the beltway. ;)

This is actually why I told my husband yesterday that I wanted to spend a few more dollars and take the train. We'll be taking this trip in January and the last 2 years have had some pretty terrible snow storms around here. I figured the train would be the easiest and less likely to be backed up from accidents or something else. Even though we're only 45 mins from Baltimore I'm also considering staying a night in Baltimore just because of the time of the year.

We just used The Airport Shuttle - http://theairportshuttle.com/ - and thought they did a very good job. The price is reasonable and competitive.

baltimore cruise port to dca

Besides using a taxi and/or public transportation with multiple transfers, I don't see any easy solution for you.

But if you have to fly into National, and If you can 't find any specialized cruise transportation, can't afford the ground transportation, and don't have any strict time restraints, your best cost-effective bet is to put aside roughly 2 hours and make the trip from National to the cruise terminal using public transportation.

Oh and I hope you don't have a lot of luggage ; )

To do this....Take DC metro subway yellow line (there is a station at National) to Gallery Place/Chinatown station, transfer to green line headed toward Greenbelt. At Greenbelt station....take B30 bus to BWI....from BWI you can take a taxi downtown (roughly $30-40) or take Baltimore light rail to downtown Baltimore...and then a taxi to cruise terminal.

You could also do what neslaw1 said and take an Amtrak train from Union Station (you'd need to transfer to red line at Gallery Place/Chinatown station headed toward Glenmont), but it would be more expensive and take the same amount of time. It would probably make it easier with a lot of luggage though.

Transportation to Baltimore Cruises

The Baltimore cruise terminal is 11 miles from BWI Airport, so transportation there and back is easy and fast. That is how far the Baltimore airport is from the cruise port.

Ask your cruise line if they offer transfers for Baltimore cruises. This is transportation between the airport and the cruise terminal. If you buy transfers, you will be met at the airport by their "meet & greet" personnel.

If you prefer not to use your cruise line's transportation services, there are plenty of cabs and shuttles available at the airport.

Baltimore cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-04-28 14:01

Port Baltimore cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Baltimore, Maryland. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Baltimore cruise port is a part of Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore. It is located on Patapsco River banks in central Maryland (USA) and is operated by MPA (Maryland Port Administration). As homeport, Baltimore MD's cruise schedule includes roundtrip itineraries the whole year-round. Most popular destinations are Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas, as well as Bermuda (during summer) and New England (during fall). Most of the embarking passengers (up to 90%) arrive at Maryland Cruise Terminal by car. Of those, the largest numbers are residents of Pennsylvania, Washington DC , and NOVA (Northern Virginia).

In October 2016, the cruise port had a record number of ship calls and handled passengers due to homeported here large-sized liners of Carnival and RCI-Royal Caribbean International. The port was also visited by several luxury companies, among which Azamara , Silversea , Hapag-Lloyd . In 2016, the seaport signed a 5-year extension agreement with Carnival Corporation and a 3-year contract with RCCL (Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd).

The largest companies homeporting ships in Baltimore on a year-round basis are Carnival (with Carnival Pride ), RCI Royal Caribbean (with Grandeur OTS /2013-2020, replaced by Enchantment OTS in 2021), and also ACL-American Cruise Lines (small-capacity boats). Most port calls here are on transition itineraries. In 2018, RCI added more summer voyages to Canada New England, while Carnival added 14-day "Carnival Journeys" itineraries (in January and December).

In 2023 (September) turnaround operation from Baltimore started also NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line with two ships -  Norwegian Sky (to New England USA and Canada) and Norwegian Sun (to Bermuda and the Caribbean).

Port Baltimore

Port Baltimore annually contributes nearly USD 3,3 billion (wages and salaries), USD 2,6 billion (business revenues) and USD 395 million (state and local taxes). Port’s average annual direct job salary is 9,5% higher than Maryland's average. In 2018, the port reported a cargo shipping record of 43 million tons handled its state-owned and privately-owned terminals. The previous record (40,9 million tons) was in 1974. FY2018, port's cargo throughput was valued USD 59,7 billion (USD 53,9B in FY2017). Port’s state-owned cargo terminals handled 10,9 million tons. Also in 2018, the port handled 1,023152 million TEU-containers and the record 850,147 mobile units (cars and light trucks).

Port Baltimore is currently ranked USA's largest for Ro-Ro shipping (autos and light trucks, heavy farm, and construction machinery) and for imported sugar. The port is ranked USA's second in exported coal (after Norfolk VA ). The port is also ranked USA's 9th (total cargo value) and 12th (foreign cargo tonnage). Port'ss businesses generate around 13,650 direct jobs, plus around 127,600 Maryland jobs (linked to its activities). The economic impact is nearly USD 3 billion (in wages and salaries) and USD 310 million (tax revenues).

In early-December 2018, Port Baltimore received USD 6,6 million in federal funding for building a second cargo berth with docking capacity two supersized boxships simultaneously. By the project will be deepened (to max draft 15 m / 50 ft) a second berth at Seagirt Marine Terminal. Additionally, the project (total cost USD 32,7 million) will be contributed to USD 7,8 million (by Maryland State) and USD 18,4 million (by Ports America Chesapeake, terminal's operator). Construction works were scheduled to start in 2019-H2 and completed in 2020-H2.

The second container berth project is via a public-private partnership signed in 2010 with Ports America Chesapeake. Dredging works (by US Army Corps of Engineers) started on December 12, 2018, and included 6 harbor channels. This project was budgeted USD 17,5 million and is part of the seaport's regular maintenance of shipping channels that go from Chesapeake Bay (Virginia) all the way to Baltimore. These waterways require periodic dredging (deepening) to ensure their max draft and safe navigation. Baltimore Harbor dredging involves removing material from Curtis Bay, Craighill (Entrance, Channel, Angle, Upper Range) and Cutoff Angle. Port's channels are dredged to max depth 15,5 m (51 ft).

In 2018, the port's largest container ship was Gunde Maersk (IMO 9359014, 11K-TEUs), surpassed in 2019 by Evergreen Triton (IMO 9728916, 15K-TEUs). In 2017, the port handled 596,972 TEUs (containers) Port's state-owned terminals have records for the Fiscal Year 2017-2018 (10,976 million cargo tons) and 1-month TEUs (90152 - in May 2018).

Baltimore cruise terminal

Baltimore cruise terminal was moved in 2006 from Dundakl Port to South Locus Point. BWI Airport is only at 10 min drive distance from the cruise port. Less than 1 hour takes to reach Washington DC and Annapolis MD . Interstate 95 (I-95 highway) is only 0,7 mi (1,2 km) from the seaport.

Maryland Cruise Terminal was redesigned to serve the increasing number of roundtrip itineraries out of Baltimore. The terminal building offers restrooms, payphones, vending machines, ATMs, check-in counters, VIP room, huge parking space (advanced reservations not required).

Terminal building's size is approx 75,700 m2 (815,000 ft2). The length of each of the 2 docking berths is 1139 ft (347 m) with water depth 35 ft (9) m.

In 2016-2017, Port Baltimore made several improvements. Among those were separate VIP check-in room, new public address system (electronic sound amplification-distribution system), new check-in counters, enclosed waiting area (for disembarking passengers), additional parking lot (capacity up to 500 cars).

The cruise ship terminal's convenient location (on I-95) and its large and cheap parking are beneficial for the port's business growth. Also convenient is that the terminal has separate docking areas for Carnival and RCCL ships, plus a third area ready for another major cruise company to homeport a vessel here.

Smaller-sized cruise vessels use for berthing Baltimore's Constellation Pier. Among the companies that dock ships there are American Cruise Lines .

Sightseeing:

With something around every corner to either see or do, Baltimore is certainly an exciting place to visit. While here you may want to explore a few of our famous Baltimore Museums such as the Baltimore Aquarium , the Maryland Science Center , B&O Railroad Museum , The National Great Blacks In Wax Museum, or The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History . Baltimore also has a very rich cultural history and by touring a historic site like Fort McHenry - home of the National Anthem - you will gain a new perspective of Baltimore.

Inner Harbor is home to many tasty restaurants, unique shopping, famous museums, live entertainment and local pubs and taverns.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

When you're in Baltimore, you're two feet away from almost everything. Many of Baltimore's hotels, attractions, restaurants and nightlife are located within comfortable walking distance of each other. You can see just what's in walking distance from where you're staying by checking the walking radius feature on our Baltimore Map .

The Baltimore Water Taxi is an excursion on its own, stopping at places like Harborplace, the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center, Little Italy, Fell's Point, Canton Waterfront Park and Fort McHenry.

Fares to ride light rail, buses and subway are $1.80 each way, and $4.20 buys you a day pass that gets you unlimited rides on all three. You can buy the pass from any bus operator or vending machine at subway/light rail stations.

the  Charm City Circulator  is a city-run service. And unlike the above three options, the Circulator is free! Funded by parking taxes, several routes are now online:

  • The Orange Route runs east-west between Harbor East and Hollins Market.
  • The Purple Route runs north-south between Penn Station and Federal Hill.
  • The Green Route runs mostly east of downtown, serving Power Plant Live, Fells Point, and the Johns Hopkins medical complex.
  • The Banner Route runs from the Inner Harbor to Fort McHenry.

The buses, while smaller and quieter than the MTA trains, are more stylish and fun to ride. And they're ideal for people staying downtown looking for a very economical way to get out towards Fells Point, Federal Hill, Mount Vernon and other areas underserved by the MTA.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here

Nearby Places:

Just 45 minutes from Baltimore, the charming, historic city of Annapolis once served as America's capital. Just off the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is steeped in colonial history and ambiance; the Annapolis State House, built in 1772, is the oldest state capitol in continuous operation in the U.S. At the U.S. Naval Academy, established in 1845, visit the chapel to view the elaborate stained glass windows, including one designed by Tiffany, and see the crypt of naval hero John Paul Jones. And we don't mind admitting it's a fabulous place for noshing (in everything from seedy taverns to chic cafes) and boutique shopping. Note: You'll need a car to make this trip.

Visit the nation's capital. Washington D.C. is about an hour away by train ( Amtrak and MARC , Maryland's regional railroad, both offer service between the cities) or by car. The obvious attractions, of course, are the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Institution, the White House, Georgetown and the U.S. Capitol.

Shopping and Food

The official U.S. currency is the United States dollar (symbol: $). ATM's everywhere.

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely used and accepted, even for transactions worth only a few dollars. In fact, in some cases, it may be the only way to make a transaction. Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices (except for gasoline, and in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises), but instead will be calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are:

  • Full-service restaurants: 15-20% (Often this is the only income of the wait(ress). Tips are either left in cash or you can add it to the credit card slip) Note: Few restaurants add an automatic service charge, in which case it is up to you how much you tip extra. Check your bill!
  • Taxi drivers, hairdressers, other personal services: 10-15%
  • Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15% of total
  • Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless)
  • Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab
  • Tour guides: Depending on tour length, size, and overall quality of guided tours; for half day tours or less $5-10 per person, for longer tours $10-20 per person.
  • Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%
  • Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional)
  • Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, possibly more for very large orders

Communication:

The U.S. has no official language at the federal level, but English is by far the standard for everyday use. Several states have declared their official state language as English. Spanish is also official in the state of New Mexico, where it is widely spoken; French is official in Louisiana and the Hawaiian language is official in Hawaii, but neither approaches the use of English and are official for primarily historical reasons.

Emergency 911

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles, many drugstores and supermarkets are routinely open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, while department stores, shopping centers and most other large retailers are typically open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and often with shorter hours on Sundays - generally 11 a.m. or noon to 5 or 6 p.m. On holidays, the tendency is to remain open (with the exception of the most important holidays like Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day where stores are generally closed)

Baltimore Cruise Port Terminal Information

Last updated on March 26th, 2024 at 12:40 pm

Situated in the historic Inner Harbor, Baltimore's cruise terminal offers a picturesque waterfront setting with easy access to the city's attractions, including the National Aquarium, Harborplace, and charming neighborhoods, making it an ideal departure point for your cruise.

Baltimore Bridge Collapse

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 26, a container ship struck one of the support towers of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, collapsing it.

Royal Caribbean operates year-round from the Port of Baltimore. RC’s Vision of the Seas sailed out of Maryland and is currently on a 12-night Southern Caribbean sailing due back on April 4th.

Carnival Legend is due to return to Baltimore on March 31st after a 7-day cruise to the Bahamas.

At this point, with the bridge in the water, access to the port is completely shut off.  The Key bridge is just five miles from the cruise terminal.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge sits about five miles from the cruise port. Its collapse blocks entry to the area. Map data: Google. Image courtesy of Cruzely.

The Key bridge carries Interstate 695 over the river. 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge and the bay has five public and 12 private terminals.

More than 40 ships were inside the Baltimore port when the bridge collapsed, including small cargo ships, tug boats and pleasure crafts. Those vessels are currently trapped in the harbor.

The South Locust Point Cruise Terminal, also called Cruise Maryland Terminal, is located at 2001 East McComas Street.

From the north, the terminal can be reached via I-95 South through Ft. McHenry Tunnel. Sticking to the right lane, you should take Exit 55 on Key Highway and turn left when you reach the traffic light on the corner of East McComas Street. From there, you will see signs that will direct you to the entrance of the terminal on the right.

Baltimore’s port is quite small so check-in can be quite fast and simple. The cruise terminal parking lot is located right next door, within easy walking distance. There is plenty of staff both outside to collect your luggage and inside to check you in so that you are on the ship in no time.

Baltimore Embarkation Tips:

– Check your cruise line’s current health protocols for the most up-to-date information!

– Have your luggage tags already attached for quick drop off. If forgotten, a small tent with extras is close at hand. You can park after dropping your luggage off.

– Do not arrive at the port earlier than 2 hours after the ship has arrived from the previous cruise. It is suggested you wait until the embarkation time given you by the cruise line in order to maintain short lines (ie Royal Caribbean suggest wait time may be as long as 25 minutes, which is very short in comparison with other terminals).

– Have your cruise ticket and ID close at hand as soon as you enter the terminal. The building is very small and you will be able to get in a check-in line as soon as you enter.

– Passengers with limited mobility – always ask if there is a line for those with disabilities. While the lines may be short, there is a steep winding walkway used while boarding on some ships, which can be tricky to navigate. Cruise line staff are always willing to help.

– Don’t be late! All passengers must arrive at least 90 minutes prior to the ship’s departure time.

New deep-water channel allows first ship to pass Key bridge wreckage in Baltimore

B ALTIMORE (AP) — The first cargo ship passed through a newly opened deep-water channel in Baltimore on Thursday after being stuck in the harbor since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed four weeks ago, halting most maritime traffic through the city’s port.

The Balsa 94, a bulk carrier sailing under a Panama flag, passed through the new 35-foot (12-meter) channel headed for Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Two more commercial ships followed later Thursday, including a vehicle carrier headed to Panama.

Their long-awaited voyages marked an important step in the ongoing cleanup and recovery effort as crews have been working around the clock to clear thousands of tons of mangled steel and concrete from the entrance to Baltimore’s harbor.

Five vessels that have been stranded for weeks are expected to finally leave Baltimore through the new, temporary channel. Other ships are scheduled to enter the port, which normally processes more cars and farm equipment than any other in the country.

Thousands of longshoremen, truckers and small business owners have seen their jobs impacted by the collapse, prompting local and state officials to prioritize reopening the port and restoring its traffic to normal capacity in hopes of easing the economic ripple effects of the collapse. Officials have also established various assistance programs for unemployed workers and others impacted by the closure.

On Thursday morning, the Balsa 94 moved through the channel guided by two tug boats, one in front and one behind. It glided slowly past the fallen bridge and grounded Dali, the massive container ship that caused the collapse when it slammed into one of the bridge’s support columns.

Pieces of the steel span are still blocking other parts of the port’s main channel, which has a controlling depth of 50 feet (15 meters), enough to accommodate some of the largest cargo and cruise ships on the water.

The Balsa 94 is expected to arrive in Canada on Monday.

The Dali lost power and veered off course shortly after leaving the Port of Baltimore bound for Sri Lanka last month.

Six members of a roadwork crew — all Latino immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras — plunged to their deaths in the collapse. Four bodies have been recovered from the underwater wreckage while two remain missing.

A memorial for the victims near the south end of the bridge has grown in recent weeks. It now includes six large wooden crosses decorated with flags from the victims’ home countries and other personal items, including the hardhats and work boots that allowed them to provide for their families and chase the American dream. A painted canvas backdrop displays abstract scenes from the bridge collapse and salvage efforts as well as handwritten notes from the men’s loved ones.

“We want to send a message to the world that we’re here and we care,” said the artist, Roberto Marquez, who was visiting the memorial late Thursday morning. “We will be here working until they are all recovered.”

The new channel will remain open until Monday or Tuesday and then close again until roughly May 10. During the closure, crews will work to remove steel spans from the deck of the Dali and refloat the ship, which will then be guided back into the port, officials said earlier this week.

The port’s main channel is set to reopen next month after the Dali has been removed from the collapse site. That will allow for a normal flow of traffic to resume through the port.

But for now, the 35-foot depth is a substantial increase over the three other temporary channels established in recent weeks. It puts the cleanup effort slightly ahead of schedule, as officials previously said they hoped to open a channel of that depth by the end of April.

A hulking vehicle carrier named Carmen that is nearly as long as the Dali became the third commercial ship to traverse the channel Thursday afternoon. Viewed from the deck of a nearby passenger boat, it appeared to sail steadily between the marker buoys, dwarfing the cranes, barges and other wreckage removal equipment that was stationed nearby.

Even with commercial ships chugging past, crews continued the arduous process of clearing debris from the collapse site. On Thursday, they were using a crane apparatus to smash the fallen roadway into more manageable pieces that could be lifted from underwater with a giant claw.

In a court filing Monday, Baltimore’s mayor and city council called for the Dali’s owner and manager to be held fully liable for the bridge collapse, which they said could be devastating for the regional economy. They said the port , which was established before the nation’s founding, has long been an economic driver for Baltimore and the surrounding area. Losing the bridge itself has also disrupted a major east coast trucking route.

The filing came in response to an earlier petition on behalf of the two companies asking a court to cap their liability under a pre-Civil War provision of an 1851 maritime law — a routine procedure for such cases. A federal court in Maryland will ultimately decide who’s responsible and how much they owe.

In the meantime, both the FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board are conducting probes to determine what caused the ship to lose power and strike the bridge.
