Bandipur National Park is regarded as one of the most beautiful and better-managed national parks of India. Located amidst the picturesque surroundings of the towering Western Ghats on the Mysore-Ooty highway in Karnataka, it is an important part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that constitutes Karnataka’s Rajiv Gandhi National Park ( Nagarahole ) to its Northwest, Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary to its South, and Kerala’s Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary to its Southwest. The total extent of Bandipur National Park is 872.24 sq km. It is located partly in Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajanagar District and partly in H.D.Kote and Nanjangud taluks of Mysuru District.

Once the private hunting grounds of the erstwhile Maharajas, and nestled at the foothills of the Nilgiris, Bandipur has had a long tryst with tigers. One of the thirty reserves identified across the country to save the tiger and its habitat, it’s also one of the last refuges of the endangered Asiatic wild elephant. Apart from the two famed residents, a number of other endangered species such as sloth bears, gaurs, Indian rock pythons, jackals, muggers, and four-horned antelopes can be spotted in this national park. Bandipur also shelters sambar, mouse deer, chital, sloth bear, and the rare flying lizard. Over 200 species of birds and a diversity of flora add to its attraction. Bandipur also supports a wide range of timber trees including teak, rosewood, sandalwood, Indian-laurel, Indian Kino tree, giant clumping bamboo, etc.

Bandipur Forest Safari:

Jungle Lodges and Resorts alone is now licensed to operate jeep safaris. Mini-bus safaris operated by the Forest Department begin from the range office. The bus safari is conducted between 6:15 am-9 am and 2:15 pm-5 pm. The fee is 350 INR per person. Best Time to do Bandipur National Park Tiger Safari

Embarking on a Bandipur National Park Tiger Safari is a journey that can be enjoyed year-round, each season offering a unique perspective of the park’s vibrant ecosystem. However, to optimize your safari experience, considering the weather, wildlife activity, and visitor traffic is key. Here’s a guide to help you decide the best time for your adventure:

Weather Considerations

  • Summer (March to May) : With temperatures soaring up to 35°C, the landscape turns dry, drawing animals to watering holes, which can increase your chances of sightings, especially tigers. Despite the heat, the visibility is high, making it a favored season for wildlife enthusiasts.
  • Monsoon (June to September) : The park transforms into a lush paradise, though heavy rains may limit animal sightings as they seek shelter. This season offers a unique experience with fewer tourists and a vibrant, green backdrop, but be prepared for humid conditions and occasional safari route closures.
  • Winter (October to February) : The cool and pleasant climate, with temperatures dropping to 10°C, makes winter an ideal time for comfortable safaris. This season attracts elephants and other herbivores to the open, grazing on the lush grasslands, against a picturesque setting.

Wildlife Sightings

  • Summer : Exceptional for observing tigers, as well as a plethora of birds and reptiles congregating around water sources.
  • Monsoon : Less favorable for sightings due to dense foliage and animals’ preference to stay sheltered from the rain.
  • Winter : Excellent for viewing elephants and a variety of herbivores in their natural habitats, enjoying the fresh vegetation.

Visitor Traffic

  • Peak tourist times align with the summer and winter seasons, particularly on weekends and holidays, owing to the pleasant weather and optimal wildlife viewing conditions. To avoid crowds and enjoy a serene safari experience, consider visiting on weekdays or during the quieter monsoon season.

By aligning your visit with these insights, you can enhance your Bandipur Tiger Safari experience, whether you seek thrilling wildlife encounters, tranquil nature explorations, or simply the beauty of the changing seasons.

BANDIPUR NATIONAL PARK

Bandipur National Park is a picturesque and well managed park located in the Southern State of India. It was established in 1974 as a Tiger Reserve Project . The national park is located strategically at the juncture of the Deccan Plateau and the Western Ghats, making it a favourable refuge to ubiquitous wildlife. The northern end of the park faces the Kabini River and the Moyar River flows by the south. The Nugu River runs through the park. Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta Hill, houses a Hindu temple at its summit and is the highest point in the park. The temple attracts pilgrims throughout the year. The undulating and diverse landscape of the National Park is covered with dry deciduous, moist deciduous forests and shrub lands. The most predominant trees found here are Teak, Sandalwood, and Indian Laurel etc.

Earlier the Bandipur National Park was a private hunting ground for the Maharajas of the Mysore Kingdom. In order to save the depleting number of animals due to hunting, it was declared as a protected reserve in 1973. Today, along with the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Nagarhole National Park, it forms the biggest biosphere of India known as the  Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

The Mysore – Ooty Highway crisscrosses through the Bandipur National Park. This has largely increased the connectivity to the park and has made it very popular among the tourists. However on the downside, the speeding vehicles have been a major concern for fatal accidents of innocent animals that cross the highway.

About Bandipur national Park

The open-ness of the Bandipur park provides for huge Elephant herds and one of the last strongholds of the Indian Wild Dogs – the extremely intelligent pack hunters of the Indian Forest. The Kabini River separates Bandipur from Nagarhole, yet the denizens are able to traverse freely between the 2 parks when the water levels recede.

The elusive Black (melanistic) Leopard has been spotted in Bandipur national park on more than one occasion, and it is believed that there are multiple individuals living inside the park. Therefore, it is safe to say that a tiger safari in India is incomplete without experiencing all that Bandipur National Park has to offer.

Bandipur Safari – Tryst with the Tiger

' src=

Bandipur Safari is by far one of the most ethical  jungle safaris available in India, and also one of the most favorite things to do for people in Bangalore on weekends. This densely forested area is the gateway to many popular hill stations nearby – Ooty, Kodaikanal, and Wayanad to name a few.

Once the favorite hunting ground of the royal families of Mysore, this is now a safe abode for the wild – elephants, antelopes, spotted deer, peafowls, and many other native species including the majestic tiger. Bandipur along with three regions – Nagarhole (also in Karnataka), Wayanad (Kerala) and Mudumalai (Tamil Nadu), form the largest Tiger Zone of India both by area and by number (an estimated 570 tigers in the zone, most of which is in Karnataka).

The jungles are interconnected though administered separately by three different states – an exemplary inter-state collaboration for wildlife protection. My love for the Western Ghats of India is not a secret, so every time we went on our regular weekend escapades in search of some hidden gems in the bejeweled crown of the Nilgiris, I always hoped to see just a glimpse of a tiger, or cheetah or maybe a panther.

We’ve seen a flock of delicate deer roaming around us in Nagarhole and the wild elephants on their own family picnic on our way to Ooty, but never had the fortune of tiger sighting – not until we booked a serious 6-hour safari with the Jungle Lodges .

Did you know? India is now home to 70% Tigers in the  world!

A Quick Outline

Our Experience at the Jungle Lodges

Our cottage called Leopard | Bandipur Safari

Envisioned by the former Chief Minister Late Sri Gundu Rao, Jungle Lodge Resorts group is a Public-private partnership (PPP) of the Karnataka government and Tiger Tops. Started in 1980 with the eco-resort at Kabini it happens to be the first eco-tourism venture in India. They have quite an impressive website which has details about all their resorts in Karnataka and the different packages they offer. The packages are usually at the per-person level and not per room.

We started from Bangalore at 7:30 am on a hot Saturday in March and drove about 220 km to reach the resort at 1 pm. For those not aware, March is usually the hottest month of the year in Bangalore with temperature often crossing 35 degrees, incidentally, it is also the best season to see wildlife in Bandipur.

To our pleasant surprise, the drive was smooth, no traffic congestion, a fantastic road which helped us drive 250 km in a little over 4 hours including the breakfast halt. We were greeted at the reception where we were they explained to us the full itinerary – it seemed less of a holiday and more of a project! Here is the briefing for you -Lunch at 2 pm – Bandipur safari for three hours starts at 3:30 pm – Evening snacks to be served after we return from the safari between 6:30 pm –7pm – One-hour wildlife documentary to be screened at the theatre at 8 pm – Dinner starts at 9 pm – Next morning wake-up call at 5:30 am – Morning tea and start of another three-hour Bandipur safari at 6:00 am – Breakfast to start at 9 am – Check-out 11 am

This was the full package that amounted to Rs.7500 per-person for a two-bedroom cottage nestled in a beautiful green forest-like setting.

Jungle Lodge Resorts Bandipur, Karnataka | Bandipur Safari

All the cottages had exquisite wall paintings of wild animals that live in the Bandipur jungle – sloth bear, elephants, deer, leopard among others depending on the name of the cottage. We had a life-size leopard on our wall! Rooms are clean and spacious but do not have TV or AC (eco-tourism, remember?).

There is a cooler instead but because of the greenery and architecture of the cottages, it was quite cool inside the rooms and we didn’t need to use it at all. With the packed schedule of events that we had, there was no time for TV either. We quickly freshened up to make the best use of the little buffer time we had before lunch, to experiment with our newly purchased Nikon DSLR camera.

You can book an all-inclusive tour of Bandipur from Bangalore without worrying about car rental, hotel and safari timings. Check out the deal here .

The Bandipur Safari – How we met the Tiger

Day 1 – the afternoon tiger safari.

After a wholesome lunch, I changed into darker shades as instructed for Safari and we took off for our first safari scheduled for 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm. We looked like the most under-prepared idiots out there among the experienced wildlife photographers. They had caps, masks , sun gloves, 200mm/500mm lenses and I even forgot my hairband (rest of the things were not even on our packing list).

Monkeys at Bandipur, Karnataka | Bandipur Safari

We were already burning in the scorching sun and knew difficult times were ahead in the safari. As the jeep roared past the roads into the depths of the jungle, the thick canopy relieved us from the sun, but the dust took over and clogged our nose already. That couldn’t stop us from enjoying the rich flora and fauna of the jungle, the experience of raw nature.

At this point let me delve deeper into why tiger sighting in Indian jungles is more difficult than sighting lions in Africa. It’s the elusive skin of the striped beauty and their preferred terrain. Lions usually live in the deserts which have light vegetation, meaning clearer vision for photographers or even normal travelers. The Tigers, on the other hand, live in dense forests and their skin helps them camouflage with the trees. All the jeep drivers in the safari are also experienced forest guides and they know how to follow the sound of birds and track the trails of a tiger. About an hour into the safari, we spotted a dash of striped skin blended with the bushes, from a distance of at least 150 meters.

Lake at Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve | Bandipur Safari

We waited there for almost another hour till she woke up, watching some rare birds including the magnificent peacocks in the meantime. As we waited like the paparazzi with our cameras (without flash) we saw the tiger wake up finally, do a few stretches and then just fade into the jungle. Our 18mm-140mm camera was not good enough to take the perfect pictures of the tiger but we managed to capture the beauty of the jungle and the glorious sunset.

Sunset at Bandipur Natonal Park and Tiger Reserve | Bandipur safari

By the time we returned it was already 7 pm and we had only 1-hour break before the documentary was about to start. I was having a headache from the long journey of the day and had decided that I might as well fall asleep in the theater because what else you do when you watch a documentary. Turns out this was the best movie I had watched in a long time. Shot over a period of several years at Bandipur jungles, tracking the different phases of the life of a tigress – how she grew up, how she found friends and foes- we were invested in her right from the beginning.

After this completely fulfilling experience, we had dinner, tried to self-train ourselves in night-mode photography, failed and retired to our cottages. We had to have a good night’s sleep after all as the wake-up call was at 5:30 am. next morning.

Day 2 : The Morning Tiger Safari

Last day we wrestled with the heat, and today was our tryst with the cold wind of early morning as we breezed past the highway into the jungles. Yes, we didn’t bring stuff to protect us from the heat and dust, neither did we bring even a jacket for the cold. Throughout the safari, we kept following a tiger’s trial closely and followed the sound of birds but failed to spot the striped beast. I know it sounds exactly like hunting, except we were a different kind of “shooters”.

We met other groups on our way who were delighted to show us the shots of the tiger drinking water from the lake. This was turning out to be the most boring experience I could imagine, just sitting still in a jeep at some part of the large forests, with the hope of seeing something. This is what’s meant to be a wildlife photographer I wondered, while I was convinced that nothing good is going to happen while just waiting here and we should just take off.

We did see some peafowls and monkeys, but if you live in India, the sight of monkeys is not as exciting as it might sound. With an empty heart, we set off to leave the forest when right there in the middle of the road just 5km away from the exit sat the tigress. It felt as if she was playing the Diva and we were those page3 photographers feeling blessed in the presence of Mademoiselle. There she was basking in the sun in the morning sun looking at us and then turning around uninterested.

People with those long lenses started shooting her, and comically they indeed looked like snipers in action. We were in an open jeep, unarmed except with our cameras and binoculars, standing a pounce away from the mighty tigress – but there was no fear in our hearts, only awe and the joy of this golden rendezvous. Yes, we managed to take some pretty satisfactory pictures as novice photographers as well!

bandipur tiger safari timings

This is an in-depth post with some relevant information.

I've been on a few safaris in africa, but never a tiger safari in india. I've been trying to convince my good friend to take me to visit bandipur (where he's from) so I can see the tigers. Your pictures make it look magical! Can't wait to go.

Wow that's great! you should definitely visit Bandipur to see these gorgeous beasts

What a fun tiger safari, and ethical to boot! Isn’t it shocking how much equipment some people carry and here I am with my iPhone! I’m so glad that persistence paid off – that tigress just wanted you to appreciate the moment so much more!

I love that you mention responsible tourism. It's such an important factor now, when tourism grew to the enourmous business.

so true, I feel the same 🙂

You are right. Thanks!

This is so interesting to see tigers in their natural habitat. I've never done anything like this, or been to India, so it was a fascinating read. I appreciate the tips on clothing and staying quiet as much as possible, it's so helpful.

Tiger safari sure sounds very exciting! I would be so nervous though but it would be awesome to see them in life in the nature. Such a beautiful animal! This must of been such memorable trip you, you will never forget it!

I am so glad I followed along with you. I was starting to worry you wouldn't see a tiger either (and I was thinking the title was just a tease!), but finally!!! Yay! Also, I love that the tour is both in the afternoon and in the early morning. Just to give you that extra shot at seeing a tiger. (And it must be a good documentary to keep you awake with a headache!) Thanks for the info!

I have been wanting to do the tiger reserve in India for sometime now but was lacking information first hand. You post is great and shares a more unknown safari park then the ones normally promoted. It is eco friendly as well which I appreciate. Love the photo of the tiger on in all its glory that you managed to click. Thanks.

I have always dreamed of taking a trip like this. Being able to stay in a safari and be up close with the animals will surely make me appreciate them more as I am not a big fan of zoos (I feel this is a form of animal cruelty)

Can't wait to visit this paradise in the future.

Though I stay in Bangalore but never been to Bandipur. I am bookmarking this page for my future reference since I found this very informative. Do they have one-bedroom cottages too?

no they have cottages which can accomodate upto three people. The beds are separate, so two people can share one room. they charge on a per person basis and not per room

Safaris are amazing but we should never forget about ethical and responsible tourism. I'm glad you mentioned that part. Bandipur looks simply amazing!

Nice and detailed sharing.

I haven't tried the safari travel, and I think this is something that is wont experiencing. I am glad that you promote ethical tourism because this is always overlooked or dismissed. Which part of your experience is your favorite?

What a fun adventure experience you had. I did the Tiger Safari in Corbett but never saw any tigers. Need to check out Bandipur for sure.

This post brought back very fond memories. As here on Bandipur Safari, I saw white tiger for the first time in my life and so far, the last time too. Haha. I love how strategically this park is located and how close the other national park and places of interest are. Did not know that Bandipur along with three regions is the largest Tiger Zone of India. We had gone on a day trip from Bengaluru. Next time, would keep your lodge experience in mind. Loved the notes on for Ethical Safari as many a times, in excitement, many travelers kind of miss them.

Wow, thanks for sharing a detail post on Jungle safari with lodging in Bandipur. I would love to take this as from long time, I have not gone for any forest tours. It is great that rooms are eco-friendly ones and they don't have A.C. and T.V.. Sometimes while traveling T.V. and other electronics in the hotel room are nuisance. Also early morning wake up call at 5:30 A.M. is great because I love early morning forest tours.

You were lucky to spot tigers in both your safaris! We went to Ranthambore in Rajasthan and just like you, we did one afternoon safari and one morning safari and unfortunately, I did not see one single tiger in either! We were so disappointed, I cannot tell you. Nevertheless, the experience of living in a jungle lodge was fantastic.

This looks like an amazing experience to go on in India. I would love to do something like this one day.

From another country with tigers, I think it’s really amazing how well India has done to conserve its tiger population. If only we could do half so well.

When is the best time to visit Moscow

Discover when is the best time to visit Moscow. In this blog post, I will talk about weather, budget and other things to know to choose the best time when to go to Moscow for you. I cannot account the times when we went in Moscow. Here are the pros and the cons of each month taking all main criteria into account!

I will first describe the main criteria that will help you choose when to go to Moscow:

  • Climate in Moscow: temperatures and weather

Special events in Moscow

  • Budget and visa

Then I will talk about each season (go directly to this party if you already have an idea of the desired departure date):

  • Advantages and disadvantages month by month

The weather cannot be the only criterion to decide when is the best time to visit Moscow for you. Even if the temperatures drop low, Moscow in December is just magical! This is why I advise to take into account several criteria at the same time. Also remember that it takes at least a month to get the Russian visa.

When to go to Moscow: climate and weather

The seasons are well marked. The mid-season months are not necessarily the best for the weather. However, they are not necessarily to be avoided, because, as we will see later, Moscow is a city that changes all the time and the prices can be more attractive. For example, for a lot of people winter is the best time to visit Moscow.

Weather in Moscow. Moscow is inland, making the city “more protected” from changing weather. For example, the weather is much more changeable in St. Petersburg. On the other hand, the weather in Moscow is more and more scorching in summer, we can then easily reach 30 degrees (for the Russians, it’s already the heat wave).

Moscow temperatures

As soon as you think of Russia, you want to do “Brrrr”. Let’s prepare our down jackets! Indeed, the Russian climate is not the mildest on the planet. However, it all depends on the region, because the country is very large. Moscow is almost at the same latitude as Copenhagen. As Moscow is relatively far from the coast, there is a pronounced continental climate. It is hot in summer and cold in winter.

In addition, global warming is there. For several decades, annual average temperatures have always been recorded above the past. I suggest you look at the averages over the past five years to be as close as possible to reality:

Sunshine and precipitation

Sunshine. This is surprising, but there is more sunshine in Moscow than in Paris or even in Berlin: 1,731 hours in Moscow, compared to 1661 in Paris and 1626 in Berlin.

Duration of the day in winter. We had questions about the length of the day in winter. So, here are a few things. As in Europe, the shortest days are in December. In Moscow, at the end of December, the sun rises around 9 a.m. and sets around 4 p.m. Then the day gets bigger until the end of June, when the day is the longest.

Precipitation. There is more precipitation in Moscow than in Paris (705mm against 637mm).

When is the best time to visit Moscow: interesting events

Moscow is a city that moves a lot. It is even said that this city never sleeps. So there are a lot of events, forums, exhibitions, conferences. Here I’m going to talk about the main recurring events that punctuate the year and that may help you decide when to go to Moscow.

End of year celebrations in Moscow

December 31 rather than Christmas. The Russians are eagerly awaiting the holiday season. Here on December 31 is like Christmas with us. Religion, “opium of the people” according to Marx, and, above all, its official absence marked the country during the Soviet years. This then reinforced the celebration of December 31, while Orthodox Christmas is January 7.

Russian calendar. In addition, it should be known that the first week of January is a bank holiday. Many Russians therefore do not work during this period. Europe also greatly influences the habits of Muscovites. Consequently, the Christmas markets start in early December and, for some, continue until early February!

Fairytale atmosphere. If you are wondering when to go to Moscow and you love the holiday mood, then the end of December – early January, and even February, is for you! There are many things to do during this time: for example, Christmas markets, decorations, winter games, skating rinks. In 2016, Moscow opened the largest ice rink in Europe. In short, the city is doing a lot of entertainment during this period and the general atmosphere is at the top! However, everything comes at a cost. You can see more detail below in the article, month by month.

When to go to Moscow

Visit Moscow in May

May 1 and 9 are two big festivals in Russia. Both dates are known worldwide. May 9 in Russia is May 8 with us in France. The signature that marks the end of the Second World War. The shift day is explained by … the difference in time zone.

The May 9 holiday is a very important holiday for the Russians. The Soviet human losses amounted to millions. So there are many families who have been directly affected by the war. The first big parade was organized by Stalin on June 24, 1945 in Red Square in Moscow. Later each year the USSR and then Russia organized a parade on May 9. Here is the video of the first parade dating from 1945 in color, then the last – that of 2016.

A disadvantage of the beginning of May. For the planned events, Red Square will not be completely empty. There are always installations for May 9, but also rehearsals. So, to the question “when is the best time to visit Moscow”, I would not say that May is the best one. You can find out more in the article “Moscow in autumn” below.

Throughout the year, the Moscow City Hall organizes free events (festivals, small markets, concerts, etc.) in the Red Square and in the streets of the city center. For example, there are two major interesting events:

  • Festival of Lights “Around the World”: in 2019, it was from September 28 to October 4.
  • Anniversary of the city of Moscow always celebrated the first weekend of September.

When is the best time to visit Moscow: budget, price seasonality, visa

Most touristy periods. Many travelers come to Moscow from May to October. This is the period when we see the most tourists in Moscow. In addition, many are also those who come at the end of December and at the beginning of January for the New Year. The beginning of May and the first week of January are also strongly requested, in particular by the Russians (school holidays, public holidays).

Accommodation. Hotel rates therefore necessarily increase during these periods of the year. But they do not go so far as to triple. To give an idea, count at least 80 euros in the city center for a double room with breakfast. You can read more about the districts of Moscow in my article: Where to stay in Moscow?

Guides and tours. Also take into account that during these periods it will be more difficult to find a guide at the last moment. It’s best to do it 2-3 months in advance. There will be more waiting or difficulty obtaining tickets during the months of high tourist influx: late December, early January, May, June, July, August.

Visa for Russia. The cost of the visa does not change depending on the month of the year. On the other hand, the deadlines can be longer if you make the request for the high tourist season (from May to October). Allow about a month. Getting the Russian visa is not complicated, there is a procedure to follow.

In Russia, the seasons are divided as follows:

  • Fall: September, October, November.
  • Winter: December, January, February.
  • Spring: March, April, May.
  • Summer: June, July, August.

Discover Moscow in autumn: when is the best time to visit Moscow in autumn?

From the beginning of September, we feel that the temperatures begin to drop gradually, especially at night.

Moscow in September

More and more travelers are choosing the month of September to go to Moscow. Because it is not cold yet and there are fewer tourists than in summer. Prices drop slightly, but remain higher than in the lean months of the year. There is also the city’s birthday on the first weekend in September, but also the “Around the World” festival towards the end of the month.

Moscow in October

You are likely to come across the colors of autumn from the beginning of October. The accommodation prices are starting to drop gradually. There is less waiting in the places to visit. Temperatures are not very low: during the day they are generally around +6 degrees. On the other hand, the only negative point can be the cost of plane tickets, if you leave during the French school holidays.

Moscow in November

It’s one of the least calm! Temperatures drop and can approach zero during the day in mid-November. Hotel rates are low, there are few tourists, and therefore less waiting in museums. It’s easier to get tickets for the Kremlin Palace of Armor, which can be very difficult in the summer. Guides also have more availability. So why not go to Moscow in November?

Discover Moscow in winter: when is the best time to visit Moscow in winter?

Winter is a very nice time to go to Moscow, because the Christmas and New Year decorations are installed from the beginning of December and are not removed until the end of February. To learn more about the different activities in winter, read this article: What to do in Moscow in winter? If winter temperatures scare you, check out Moscow in the spring (see below).

Moscow in december

Normally, negative daytime temperatures set in, although the weather can vary significantly from year to year. In general, from mid-December the snow is durable. It is from December 20 that more and more travelers come to Moscow. December 31st is celebrated like Christmas in France. Accommodation rates are higher from mid-December. It’s also more complicated to find a guide at the last moment. Furthermore, as in Europe, the days of December are the shortest of the year. But if you want to mark New Years Day, you will have lots of memories!

Moscow in january

January is also a very festive month. The first week of January is a public holiday in Russia. Besides, it’s also a week of Russian school holidays. There are more people in the streets, museums and everywhere in the city. To find out more about this time of year (Christmas markets, itineraries, etc.), read: Christmas and New Years in Moscow . Prices remain high during this week, but drop from mid-January.

Moscow in February

It’s the second quietest month of the year. In February, winter clearly takes its ease. The temperatures are the lowest, it’s a real winter! The days are longer in February than in December. So we’re enjoying the day more, and with the snow it’s really nice, because the weather in Moscow in February is pretty sunny. Accommodation rates are at their lowest, and the decorations are still there. So, if you are looking for when to go to Moscow, if the cold does not scare you and you appreciate the snowy landscapes, why not consider the month of February?

Discover Moscow in spring: when is the best time to visit Moscow in spring?

Spring is a contrasting period between March, which is still quite cold, and May, when we really feel the arrival of summer.

Moscow in March

The ice and snow begin to melt around mid-March. Winter is coming in March, but spring is not quite there yet. It’s the third quietest month of the year. It is therefore possible to visit the city more quietly. Accommodation prices are low, guides are available. The weather in Moscow in March is milder than in February. In addition, the days are longer, so you can take many walks.

Moscow in April

It is only from mid-April that we begin to feel the beginnings of sunny days. The weather in Moscow in spring and April in particular is getting milder and colder: we can expect +7 during the day. In addition, there are not many travelers yet and we fear to enjoy the places more quietly, but we feel that the start of the tourist season is approaching. Accommodation rates are lower than in May.

Moscow in May

The early May holidays attract many travelers to Moscow. There are also many Russians who come to the capital on public holidays. It is therefore advisable to plan visits in advance to avoid queuing once there. Red Square can be closed or partially closed for rehearsals for the May 9 parade, the same day and one or two days after. More info in: Moscow in May: events, budget, what to do?

Discover Moscow in summer: when is the best time to visit Moscow in summer?

All summer months are great, if you take temperatures into account. The weather in Moscow in summer is quite pleasant. However, in recent years, there have been great heat peaks or heat waves in July (30 degrees during the day).

Moscow in June

From June, you can take long walks in the city’s parks, very numerous and much appreciated by the locals. Boat trips are more enjoyable from June. On the other hand, the prices of accommodation in Moscow are higher than in the lean months. There are also more tourists. Book your hotel, tours and activities in advance.

Moscow in july

July is the hottest month, but we’re not on +40. Moscow is a city inland and therefore there is little fresh air, if it is very hot. We can do lots of walks to discover the city. We have written several complete itineraries so as not to miss anything of Moscow in our special Moscow travel guide. It also contains tips to save time and enjoy the city off the beaten track, as there are so many tourists during this time of year.

Moscow in August

Temperatures are starting to drop gradually, but there are still so many people. In order to be sure of the choice of accommodation, I advise you to book in advance. The same goes for guided tours or entrance tickets to the Kremlin. It’s also a good time to discover the city differently by going to places that are less touristy and more frequented by locals.

When is the best time to go to Moscow? In summary!

The best time to discover Moscow depends on the criteria you want to favor: the weather, the budget, the tranquility of the visits, the special events to be experienced on site.

In summary:

  • The peak tourist season in Moscow begins in early May and ends in late September.
  • Late December and early January is the best time to experience the holiday mood, but it comes at a cost.
  • End of January, February, March, beginning of April, November are the quietest months of the year, when you can visit the city more calmly and on a reduced budget.
